AS WE WORKED ON THIS MONTH'S ISSUE, IT’S CLEAR THAT BELLEVUE HAS NO SHORTAGE OF OPTIONS TO KEEP OUR COMMUNIT Y HEALTHY. And just in time for those January resolutions, our “Active” issue will surely inspire you to start the year off right. You’ll learn about new fitness trends, and meet some of the area's top instructors. We only wish we had more room to include everyone—there are so many to choose from.  But don’t take our word for it. Our challenge to you is to try out as many new classes as possible until you find the right fit. We’re all different, and there is something that will work for each of us. Most importantly healthy living is a  lifestyle.  The new year is the perfect time to replace bad habits with new healthy habits.  Over time, these new habits become your lifestyle.  We all have something we need to change,

JANUARY IS A MONTH OFTEN SYNONYMOUS WITH DETOXING, DIETS AND NEWLY PURCHASED GYM MEMBERSHIPS— FOR MANY, MAKING IT A FAR LESS APPEALING TIME THAN THE PLEASURE-SEEKING MONTHS THAT CAME BEFORE IT. On the bright side, we live in an age and area increasingly abundant with healthy, local and seasonal options taste good and help us feel good, alleviating the struggle often faced when having to choose one or the other. One such healthy haven is Jujubeet, which opened its first

brick-and-mortar location in downtown Bellevue in 2013. Owner and mother of four Bianca Szyperski launched the business after becoming progressively frustrated she couldn’t find quick, healthy choices on the go while driving around with her family. With plant-based, palatable offerings like the Cacao Wow Smoothie (almond milk, cacao, almond butter, protein powder and banana) and the Herbalicious Juice (green apple, a variety of vibrant herbs and greens), Jujubeet developed a cult following, and has now expanded to four different locations throughout Bellevue and Seattle, with an upcoming location

set to open at SeaTac Airport later this year. Along with its locations, Jujubeet has also expanded its menu and features a variety of tasty, nutrient-dense eats ideal for keeping your New Year’s resolutions. A fan-favorite is the Southwest Bowl, a hearty combination of fibrous brown rice, black beans, antioxidant-rich raw and roasted veggies with earthy spices—and devoid of all things gluten, dairy or meat. But what really takes this bowl to the next level is its house-made Groovy Green Sauce, a creamy condiment that gets its texture and taste from avocado and fresh tomatillo.

A delicious blend of tomatillo and creamy avocado that’s rich in heart-healthy fats.

Each ingredient was handpicked by Jujubeet’s resident dietician, Elena Razmpoosh, for optimal flavor and health benefits. Every component shines through in the final result as a beautiful, bright and comforting bowl that tastes like anything but diet food. Visit one of Jujubeet’s locations or try this recipe out at home and watch your healthy New Year’s resolutions get a whole lot easier.

SHAKE YOUR WAY THROUGH 2018 WITH PURE BARRE’S 15-MINUTE BOOTY BLAST ARTICLE BRITTANY EISEMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEY GENEVIEVE

IT’S NOW 2018 AND YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IS SELF-CARE, BUT WHERE DO YOU START? Answer: Pure Barre! This full-body workout is low impact but high intensity, with a focus on stretching between sections, leaving you with the desirable lean muscles of a dancer. This workout thrives on using small and isometric movements that get the body shaking. This is called your “working zone,” the place where you find optimal results! And, with this 15-minute workout (focused on the booty), you won’t even have to leave your home to reap the benefits that Pure Barre has to offer. The below exercises are at-home friendly, so no need to go out and buy new equipment. All you will need is yourself, a go-getter attitude and a sassy playlist. Speaking of a playlist, here are several crowd-pleasing songs at the Bellevue studio to inspire you: "Papi" - J. Lo "Push It" - Salt'N'Pepa "Lose Control" - Missy Elliott "Run the World (Girls)" - Beyoncé "Pure Grinding" (ISHi Remix) - Avicii "Ain't That Fresh" - futurcop! Now that you have your music on and are ready to go, find an open space in your home to complete the following 15-minute booty blast. Starting with the right side first, come arm distance away from a wall, bringing your palms slightly wider than your shoulders on the wall. Keep a slight bend to the elbows and head lifted. Bend your right knee and bring your heel to your booty with a flexed foot. Then, slide the right knee back 2 inches behind the left knee. The hips will stay parallel to the wall the entire time. Lastly, always remember to keep your core engaged—this will help protect your low back and stabilize the entire body.

Squeeze heel to seat/hamstring curls 30x Extend and bend leg 30x Straighten leg: small circles of the leg 30x Reverse direction small circles 30x Small leg lifts 30x

Now that you are done working the base of the seat on the right side, come down to the floor and find your hands and knees to work the outer booty/outer hip. Once you are on all fours, lower down to your left forearm, but keep a slight bend in the right elbow. Next, extend your right leg back at a diagonal (where four would be on a clock), and bend the right knee, bringing your heel to the booty. Lastly, turn your right hip out slightly and engage your lower abs.

01 02 03 04

Knee bent/foot flexed, lower and lift leg 30x Hold leg at hip height, little lifts 30x Slide knee forward (to elbow) and back 30x Hold knee forward, little lifts 30x (for an added challenge, straighten the leg)

Repeat on left side. Once you have finished working both sides, you are going to balance everything out with three more minutes of bootyblasting fun!

Now is the time to find your favorite song, turn it up and finish strong! Come to your back, and rest your head with arms by your sides. Bend your knees, so your feet are flat on the ground, hip distance apart and parallel. Squeeze your booty to bring your hips into a bridge position. Form check: you should be able to draw one line from your knees all the way to down to your shoulders.

01 02 03 04 05 06

Right leg up, lower and lift the hips 15x Left leg up, lower and lift the hips 15x Flat feet, lower and lift hips 20x Hold hips high, little lifts 20x Flex feet, lower and lift hips 20x Hold hips high, little lifts 20x

Congrats, you are all done! If you want more Pure Barre in your life, visit PureBarre.com, follow them on social media @PureBarreWA or just come by the studio. Pure Barre Seattle and Eastside owners Sami and Brandon Sweeney, along with their amazing management team, Jenny Wyeth and Hannah Dingle, make you feel like family, so be sure to stop by any of the six studios and get your lift, tone, burn on!

TAILORED SKI AND APRÈS SKI APPAREL FOR WOMEN, BUT WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW IS THAT THE LUXURY BRAND STARTED AS A LOVE STORY. The concept was born in 2014 when director and founder Jane Seim and co-founder  Cody Seim got married on the slopes of Sun Valley, Idaho. The couple both viewed the mountains as a place that sparked freedom, adventure and creativity. Jane fueled that spark of creativity and soon began experimenting with her own ski ensembles, catching the eye of fellow skiers on their trip.  Jane spent the next year studying the history of ski fashion, collecting modern fabric and trims with “nostalgic undertones,” and traveling to industry fashion shows throughout Europe and North America. TEMA ATHLETICS PLACES HONOR ON EVERYDAY WOMEN WHO ARE REAL-LIFE HEROES ARTICLE EARL BENJAMIN | PHOTOGRAPHY KARA MERCER

WITH A HEAVY EMPHASIS ON WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT AND BODY POSITIVITY, TEMA ATHLETICS HAS BIG GOALS OF BECOMING A GLOBAL BRAND, ACCESSIBLE TO WOMEN OF ALL SIZES AND SHAPES. The activewear brand designs a wide range of clothing, influenced by the vibrancy of India as well as the latest runway styles. Founder and CEO Bhawna Gupta makes it clear that the mission is bigger than the clothing. She places honor on everyday women who are real-life heroes. “TEMA was founded to acknowledge every woman who has struggled and overlooked her accomplishments to look like someone else,” Bhawna says.  The company celebrates diversity in every form and finds strength in balance.  “I saw that we could employ people, enabling them to support their families and this has been one of my biggest inspirations. There is a huge sense of fulfillment and pleasure you get when you see someone thriving because of your efforts,” she says. “Hopefully one day we can build this company as a platform to employ women who are seeking work-life balance.”   Another driving force is her family. “My kids, especially my son, are my greatest motivations. I want to be his role model. He is such a good kid who has big dreams. Hopefully, he can see that if one is passionate about something and they put their heart and soul into it, things will work out," she says. "If a normal person like me can create something—he is so much smarter than me—there are no limits on what he can achieve.”

TEMA Athletics focuses on value, quality and style.

Before launching TEMA Athletics, Bhawna worked

FOOD & WINE

(C ON TI N U ED)

In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.

Red

For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries

Purple

Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets

Green

Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas

Orange

Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches

White

White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips

Black

Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries

The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Free and paid versions are available in Apple’s app store and Google Play store in the “Health and Fitness” category.

SoulCycle CONFESSIONS FOUR INSTRUCTORS SHARE HOW SOULCYCLE HAS SHAPED THEM

FOUR PASSIONATE INSTRUCTORS TURNED THEIR LIVES UPSIDE TO OPEN THE FIRST SOULCYCLE STUDIO IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. Teaching a powerful mind-body class that features high-intensity cardio, muscle-sculpting strength training and rhythm-based choreography makes for some unforgettable experiences. Sharing those moments are what tightens the bond between this wild bunch.

SoulCycle is more than a workout for me. My community has become family, and most of my unforgettable experiences have taken place off the bike!

“I wish I knew that I knew nothing at all! It's a journey. My peers inspire and motivate, our riders' bravery and passion is the fire behind every movement and song.

Teaching at SoulCycle has been my life's biggest lesson in authenticity. When I openly admitted that I love Whitney Houston for the first time ever, the room erupted. People lean into authenticity; it brings us together.”

Becoming a Soul instructor means you can't just 'casually' listen to music anymore. The second I hear something on the radio I'm dropping my elbows in the car on I-90 looking like a fool.”

Finally, some help for your 2018 new year’s resolution.

Be more spontaneous this year. Spend more time outside with the family. Bike for exercise. Sound familiar? We all start out with the best intentions, and then reality sets in. Maybe there’s no convenient place to store another bike. Or there’s no safe place to ride nearby, and your partner has “the bike car”. Before you know it, this year looks a lot like last year. If only there were a full-size bike that was fun to ride, and then neatly folded away when you needed to transport it or store it at either end of a commute! Here’s why 2018 will be different. A CHANGE bike looks like a real bike, because it is one. A 24-speed, lightweight bike for commuting, touring, or mountain biking . . . that folds in half in 30 seconds with no tools. Suddenly, even a Smart Car with no rack can be a bike car. So can an Uber. Every park is with reach. You can store your newfound key to adventure wherever it’s convenient—in the hallway? A boat? A private plane? See what CHANGE bikes can do for you at Flatbike, the North American distributor of CHANGE bikes, conveniently located in nearby Kirkland.
