mer when my son came home from college we always joked that we knew he was home because he always left little clues that he was back home: cups left on the counter and on the coffee table, snack bowls left in his room, bathroom doors left open...you get the idea!  I have always wanted a huge island in my kitchen and talked about a renovation for years. Finally, this summer I am enjoying a newly renovated kitchen, designed by my clients at Georgia Cabinet Co. in Johns Creek. It’s gorgeous and very functional and I now have my huge island. And now there’s a ton of extra counter space for my son to leave cups everywhere!  All kidding aside, I am very grateful to have any extra time with my kids that I can. And as all parents say, time flies, so enjoy every minute.

here's to hair WE ASKED THE OWNER OF THE BOARDROOM ABOUT MEN'S HAIR HEALTH.

ARTICLE ELAINE LUCE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

FOUNDED IN 2004, BOARDROOM IS THE LEADER IN QUALITY MEN’S GROOMING, WITH THE MISSION TO HELP MEN RELAX, LOOK GREAT AND FEEL CONFIDENT. We pulled up a stool and asked about men's hair care. Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD A GUY GET A HAIRCUT? A: A good clean-up is recommended once every three weeks. It doesn’t matter if your style is long, short, messy, or polished, you should always look like it was done on purpose. Life is hectic and moves very quickly. It’s a good idea to plan ahead and make time for yourself. Scheduling your next appointment before leaving the salon will ensure you maintain your desired look and gives you something to look forward to.  However, walk-ins are welcome, too.  Q: HOW CAN GUYS PROTECT THEIR HAIR AND HEADS DURING THE GEORGIA SUMMER HEAT? A: Sunblock is man’s new best friend.  A healthy scalp is the key to a healthy head of hair. Just like the skin on your face, your scalp needs protection from those harmful rays and damaging outside elements. A baseball cap won’t always give you the protection that you need. A small amount of your favorite SPF 50 sunblock, massaged directly into the scalp, will offer protection and prevent dryness and irritation. You can then style with your favorite go-to product or throw on your favorite baseball cap and enjoy your day of fun in the sun.

Q: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR STYLISTS. A: Boardroom employees are the best in the industry. Not only do they take pride in their creative work, but their number one focus is always creating the best client experience. At Boardroom, we implement continuous training to our Stylists, Barbers, and Front Desk Consigners with monthly focuses on technical and professional interaction. The Boardroom takes pride in being the authority in men’s grooming, and our employees continue to uphold that standard. One of Boardroom’s Company Core Values is Teamwork, and we take that very seriously. The Boardroom Experience is not accomplished by one person alone. It takes an entire Team to ensure that our clients have the best experience every time they step foot into a Boardroom Salon. Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LOCATION FOR YOUR BUSINESS? A: Our vision for Boardroom is to become a national brand, which is why we’re significantly expanding the number of salons and markets in which we operate. Our team focuses on opening our new locations in the best retail centers within our target markets.  These centers checked all the right boxes to support our growth plans and continue to give clients a reason to regularly select Boardroom as their place to get ready.  BoardroomSalon.com 7115 Avalon Boulevard, Alpharetta 3872 Roswell Road, Suite 43-A, Buckhead Court 5210 Town Center Blvd, Suite 230, Peachtree Corners 16

ALPHARETTA TEEN MAKES TOP 10 BABYSITTERS LIST BY SITTERTREE

WHEN JODY STEPHENSON WAS A SOPHOMORE AT OGLETHORPE

ATIVE WAYS TO HELP PAY FOR SOME OF HER EDUCATION EXPENSES. At the time, she was babysitting for two families. “Babysitting was always more than a job for me,” says Jody. “It was an opportunity to care for and build up each child I met.” Soon, two families turned into 20 families. She realized that families in her community needed help finding quality babysitters, so she began connecting her fellow students to families. They would call Jody on her dorm room landline and she’d arrange for them to have a sitter. It was a real-life The Baby-Sitter’s Club. By the time she graduated, her team of trusted Oglethorpe babysitters was serving 150 families throughout the greater Atlanta area. Since then, Jody has grown her network of babysitters into SitterTree, a babysitter request and scheduling tool that connects

“Through babysitting, I’ve learned how to be p at i e n t, s o lv e p r o b l e m s , c o m m u n i c at e w i t h c h i l d r e n , m u lt i ta s k , m a n a g e m y t i m e , a n d ta p i n t o m y c r e at i v e s k i l l s .”

busy parents with top mom-rated sitters. In April, the company assigned its 25,000th babysitting job, representing a collective $2 million in babysitting wages earned by SitterTree sitters. To commemorate the milestone, SitterTree debuted its inaugural list of Atlanta’s Top Babysitters, featuring the top 10 highest-rated and most popular SitterTree babysitters in metro Atlanta in 2019. One of the top sitters is Alpharetta-raised Ashley Melendez, who began babysitting at SitterTree as a way to help cover education expenses. Ashley also began babysitting because she has a big love for children. Ashley plans to attend Physician Assistant school and work in Pediatrics after graduating from Kennesaw University.  “Through babysitting, I’ve learned how to be patient, solve problems, communicate with children, multitask, manage my time, and tap into my creative skills,” says Ashley. “I know how to build a fun and respectful relationship between myself and the children.” Babysitting has also given Ashley her fair share of heartwarming memories. “I was babysitting for a family with girls, and although they were shy at first, eventually they asked me to braid their hair,” she says. She spent the evening braiding all the girls’ hair. “When their mom came back, she told me she had never seen all her girls love a babysitter so quickly.” That meant a lot to Ashley, who dreams of working with children as a physician assistant in the future.  18

GALA PROM BRIDAL PAGEANT COUTURE EVENING WEAR MOTHER OF BRIDE

ROAD TRIP TO CLEVELAND, TENNESSEE IN TWO HOURS

I FELT IT BEFORE I SAW IT. A poignant pull, a place of both warmth and tragedy, beauty and bewilderment. The Blue Hole Spring at Red Clay State Historical Park was clearly a spiritual and important place and I could sense this as I walked down the nature trail, past the Cherokee farmstead, council house, and sleeping huts depicting life as it may have been for the Native Americans who lived in this part of southeast Tennessee in the early 1800s.  This was the Eastern Council Ground for the Cherokee Nation before the Trail of Tears Removal.  The stunning sapphire spring there pumps 400,000 gallons of water downstream daily and standing by its side, you can feel its power.  The Blue Hole Spring is believed to have been the source of water for the councils of 1832 - 1837. The nearby marker explains, “The Cherokee

believe there is another world under this, and it is like ours in everything- animals, plants, and people - save the seasons are different. The streams that come from the mountains are the trails by which we reach this underworld, and the springs at their heads are the doorways by which we enter it.” While you can dip your feet in the creek, the spring pool is off limits to anyone except the Cherokee who visit twice a year. This warning perhaps made it all the more tempting to just dive into the cool clear water, and beyond.   The park is less than two hours northeast of Alpharetta, a must-see (and feel) stop as you head to the charming town of Cleveland, Tennessee for a summer weekend road trip.

ROAD TRIP

(CON TI N U ED)

An entrepreneurial spirit and hometown pride runs deep here; nearly every shopkeeper and business owner I met has roots in the community and is invested in its health and growth. At Free2Fly downtown, Hailey Johnston explained how their ministry program is helping women in transition enter the workforce. Their training provides young mothers with job experience, sustainable skills, and economic support that equips her for stability in the future. The boutique sells beautiful products with a purpose. My home base was the Inn on the Greenway, a bed and breakfast in an unassuming neighborhood next to the new paved non-motorized path to explore on bikes or by foot. The owners have lovingly renovated the five  bedroom inn themselves, with crisp and friendly touches.

Dine: + Café Roma - Family owned, gathering place for everyone who’s anyone with the head chef/owner Dylan Burrelson making the rounds to say hello. + Bald Headed Bistro - Meat-heavy, but well-rounded with smoked brisket, ribeye and chicken schnitzel, a

Rare Beach Days

HUGGING THE PRISTINE SHORELINE OF THE GULF OF MEXICO ALONG FLORIDA’S POPULAR HIGHWAY 30A ARE A CHAIN OF RARE COASTAL DUNE LAKES EMBEDDED IN THE DUNE ECOSYSTEM OF THE PANHANDLE’S SPRING BREAK CAPITAL. The rare lakes are reportedly found only along the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, Madagascar, and in the United States along the coasts of Oregon, South Carolina, and Northwest Florida. While the turquoise water of the Gulf tends to steal the show, these special lakes and their shorelines offer a glimpse into a unique world from massive dunes, winding trails where scrub oaks and magnolias stand, bent and twisted by the salt winds and abundant wildlife that should be a part of every vacationer’s itinerary. Or, if you’re lucky enough to stay at SeaBatical, a 4-bedroom home just west of Grayton Beach, you can witness the magic from the kitchen table and deck every day of your stay. Owned by the Bustle family of Gainesville, the home is in the quiet Gulf Trace neighborhood with private beach access to the Gulf and overlooks Alligator Lake and Grayton Beach State Park. The inviting turquoise appearance of the water there comes from the clarity of the Gulf of Mexico coupled with the high reflectivity of light off the sugar-white sand. The waters are so clear because no large, sediment-heavy rivers directly influence the water.

The sand is sugar-white because they are composed mainly of pure quartz crystal. These particles of quartz, once part of the southern Appalachian Mountains, were washed south over millions of years before being deposited in the Gulf of Mexico. The tumbling of the water over this long distance broke down the quartz crystals and buffed the edges, making them as fine as sugar. The Bustles recognized the uniqueness of the location when they bought their vacation home and are anxious to share it with visitors. “It is a great house for families to settle in for a week of fellowship and recreation,” says Nancy. The heated pool is surrounded by loungers and an outside shower, and the screened porch offers more views and comfortable seating. Sleeping 12 comfortably with four bathrooms including a separate ground-level kid’s bunk room, the house is family-friendly with decor that isn’t fussy or contrived. There are two king bedrooms so we didn’t have to flip a coin to see who got the big beds. The bright natural wood family room has a vaulted ceiling, two comfortable sofas, a rare wood burning fireplace and plenty of reading nooks with good lighting. We hopped on County Highway 30A’s 19-mile paved bike path  at the front of the neighborhood and biked for ice cream, drinks and meals at   nearby busier spots in Grayton Beach, Watercolor and Seaside. We loved the flat path and not having to depend on a car. And, we appreciated the Bustle’s attention to detail at SeaBatical, taking care not to overstuff the house with beachy accessories or too much furniture. The natural wood paneled walls and soft furnishings welcomed us home and made it easy for us to live our best beach lives.  866.310.5718  SunburstBeachVacations.com

LOCAL LIMELIGHT POLO IN THE PINES HONOREES BOND AND BUOY US

A Beautiful Friendship ARTICLE ANSLEY PRIDGEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

POLO IN THE PINES IS AN ANNUAL CHARITY POLO EVENT FOUNDED BY TINA FOWLER AND FAMILY, HELD ON OCTOBER 5 AND 6, BENEFITING CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTA, FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH. The seventh annual event and will be full of amazing additions such as a Veuve Cliquot sponsorship, Audi partnership, Atlanta Polo Brunch Festival, vendor market and much more. Lifestyle Publications has been a proud sponsor since the event’s inception. This year, the event ambassador is Madison Williams, a talented young singer/songwriter. Last year, the Polo in the Pines honoree was 5-year-old, Caroline Brewer. Madison and Caroline met in 2017 and formed an instant bond. Madison was the first girl Caroline met with a bald spot, and they both still have them. They are friends for life.  While they have seen each other regularly at events since they met, their bond continues to grow. Those who know young Caroline understand that she doesn’t hold still for long. She will willingly climb up into your lap or let you hold her in your arms, but she wiggles away before long. When Madison holds her, she remains remarkably calm. Madison and Caroline both have Grade III Anaplastic Ependymoma, a rare type of brain cancer, with only 50 cases reported each year. Madison believes that there is a purpose to everything -- every
