A special carrot from the Freedom Farmers Market. Run, little carrot, run!

I PROBABLY HAD KALE STUCK BETWEEN MY TEETH DURING THE ENTIRETY OF THE 20TH ANNUAL GEORGIA ORGANICS CONFERENCE, BUT NOBODY SEEMED TO CARE (OR FIND IT OFF-PUTTING). Farmers, journeymen, health and wellness professionals, chefs, public health workers and farm-to-school administrators from Georgia and the Carolinas gathered in Augusta to celebrate all things agricultural. And, boy do those folks know how to do conference banquet food.

Loads of fresh fruit and warm biscuits bookended a breakfast buffet with fresh ground coffee from sponsor, Georgia’s own small farmer coffee roaster, Cafe Campesino, served piping hot all day. On one of the many “field trips” offered, I visited the bucolic Bella Luna Sheep & Wool Co. in Tignall, Georgia. While the others talked about best practices for raising sheep (“I love birthing lambs. I get right up there and bring that baby into the world…”) I breathed in the damp mossy air and decided I needed to get out of the city and live on a farm. These people touch the earth and the earth touches them every single day.  At Happy Wife Farm in Modoc, S.C., a school bus has been repurposed into a chicken coop, a moveable roost that keeps the farm yard and lawn evenly trimmed and utilized. “We let the animals

I learned so much from the passionate professionals who led workshops and seminars. My respect for farmers is immense. Georgia Organics is campaigning to certify 200 farmers as “organic” by the year’s end, and the crowd gave a standing ovation for the 160 who already went through the process to earn the blue ribbon certification status.

TO GARNER THE CLASSIFICATION AS “ECO-FRIENDLY,” THERE IS A VERY POPULAR MISCONCEPTION THAT AN AUTOMOBILE HAS TO BE SMALL, CONSERVATIVE IN DESIGN, AND LACKING LUXURIOUS AMENITIES. The 2018 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited successfully disproves these assumptions. This large, four-door sedan immediately catches the eye with its aerodynamic frame, tinted windows, curvaceous grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, HID quadrabeam headlights and long wheelbase to comfortably fit five adults.  The interior maintains the Avalon’s attractiveness thanks to plush leather, ventilated seating; a leather-trimmed steering wheel with multi-function controls;  a push-button start complete with a smart key system for effortless departure; power rear-window sunshades; and tri-zone climate control with rear-seat heating also equipped with ventilation.  Technologically savvy, this Hybrid’s seven-inch touchscreen vibrantly displays integrated navigation and a fully stocked App Suite, plus a USB port and Bluetooth connectivity amplified by an Entune Premium JBL audio system with 11 GreenEdge speakers to ensure optimal entertainment and convenience.  Acknowledging all passengers are precious cargo, there is a plethora of safety features as well. Everything from Toyota’s stellar Safety Sense System featuring a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert with steering assist, to a state-of-the-art pre-collision system including smart stop braking to keep the stress levels of drivers low regarding possible dangers on the road. THE ALPHARETTA FARMERS MARKET OPENS THIS MONTH FOR ANOTHER DELICIOUS SEASON.

GET READY TO GET HEALTHY, ALPHARETTA! The award-winning Alpharetta Farmers Market opens this month. Known as one of the best places to spend a Saturday morning in North Fulton, the Alpharetta Farmers Market opens Saturday, April 16, and will run Saturdays through October 29 along Milton Avenue at Old Canton Street. With dozens of local vendors selling everything from artwork and crafts to the freshest, locallygrown produce, to ready-to-eat products and treats, there is truly something for everyone at this farmers market. This is also known as one of the friendliest markets, with many visitors coming as much for the conversation as they do for the goodies. This year at the Alpharetta Farmers Market you can expect to find the following: + Farm fresh vegetables and fruits + Wonderful cuts of meat (including thick-cut bacon) + Gardeners with vibrant flowers and flavorful herbs + Makers of all sorts of edible home goods like jams, soups and sauces + Delicious desserts and breads + Local raw honey + Homemade soaps With this diverse group of vendors, the vibrant community spirit, and some impressive live musical groups, this is a farmers market that continues to impress area residents. The diverse lineup of locally sourced products and fresh produce and dairy from nearby farms has clearly created a following. Alpharetta resident Tammy Von Nordheim has been visiting the Alpharetta Farmers Market for the last 15 years, often with her two daughters. She is definitely a fan.  “The Alpharetta Farmers Market is filled with yummy goodness,” she says. “I love the energy that fills the space as we walk through trying new foods and sampling old favorites. It’s a great feeling to know I’m supporting local farmers and artists who want nothing more than to share a little bit of natural goodness and conversations with the area’s locals. I’m always happy to see when the season starts and sad to see it end.”   Kimberly Landsman, another Alpharetta mom of two, is looking forward to the Alpharetta Farmers Market opening this month as well. “I love the Alpharetta Farmers Market. You can find a variety of items such as organic juices, homemade candles and soaps, baked items, produce, and more. The variety is great. Where else can you get amazingly fresh produce, local honey for your allergies, crazy good bread, spices and herbs and grass-fed organic meats?” The Alpharetta Farmers Market is presented by the Alpharetta Business Association, a thriving non-profit association dedicated to providing social networking opportunities and informative programming for the Alpharetta business community.

GIVING BACK

recycling wisely ARTICLE ERIC MONCRIEF, THE GREEN GUY SPRING IS HERE AND WITH THAT COMES SPRING CLEANING OF OUR HOMES AND WORKSPACES. While making your space tidy you can also make a decision to help our environment and recycle those unwanted items like clothes, electronics, metals, cardboard, plastic, and paint. With the annual Earth Day Celebration at the City of Milton and around our community on April 21, I would like to encourage you to begin small subtle changes in your daily routine to recycle more at home and at work.  Turn off lights when you leave the room. Maybe even begin composting your food scraps, and before you know it,  with small steps, your modified new behavior will have you on the path to living more sustainable. There are several recycling centers and drop off facilities in and around Alpharetta to take advantage of, such as  Atlanta Recycling Solutions AtlantaRecyclingSolutions.com, that can handle all your electronics, destroy all your data, and do it responsibly. They work with companies and individuals. Take a drive into the city of Atlanta, and visit the CHaRM Center for Hard to Recycle Materials. LiveThrive.org is a gem of a facility that handles everything you can think of to be recycled, and they re-purpose all materials received. Finally, for all your old clothing, check out CharityRecyclingService. com. They will collect your textiles and pay you for them. This is a great fundraiser for schools, churches or non-profit organizations that are looking to help our environment while raising cash for projects. Contact ABurroughs@CharityRecyclingService.com. Now all that recycling  may make you hungry. For sustainable food choices, get out on Saturday mornings and visit the Alpharetta Farmers Market in downtown Alpharetta for farm fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, local raw honey, homemade sauces and even soaps. We love our local farmers and makers. Check out Maria Smith's story in this issue for who is growing what this season.  Happy spring! And here's to living a more sustainable lifestyle.

KETAMINE 28

AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | April 2018

ARTICLE MELISSA THOMAS-DUBOIS

FOR THOSE WHO STRUGGLE WITH DEPRESSION OR PAIN, OFTENTIMES GETTING LUKEWARM RESULTS WITH THEIR CURRENT MEDICATION, KETAMINE MIGHT BE THE ANSWER. Widely used in hospitals for anesthesia, it is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines and was approved for use by the FDA in 1970. “We have people who come in after years of seeing multiple doctors and trying several different drugs without the results they want,” says Angelo Sambunaris, M.D., C.P.I., a psychiatrist, researcher and founder of Trek Medical. The clinic is one of a handful of centers that provides intravenous Ketamine infusions for people struggling with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD, chronic pain and substance abuse. Dr. Sambunaris has been a leader in the field of clinical research for over two decades, leading over 200 medical research studies since his early days as a Clinical Staff Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).  It was that experience that brought him to Ketamine, a cutting-edge treatment option that works differently than medications like Prozac, Effexor, Paxil or Cymbalta – ironically all medications that he helped bring to market.   “The reality is that only 33% of patients treated with an antidepressant achieve remission. Ketamine offers a completely new way of changing how the brain manages mood. Unlike antidepressants, which work by shifting the balance of brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, Ketamine is thought to change the way brain cells communicate with each other. Ketamine blocks a brain receptor known as NMDA and also acts on other brain receptors like opioid receptors, which affect pain and depression,” says  Sambunaris.  “Moreover, it can help repair the connections that have been damaged by stress over the years, supporting the ultimate goal of brain health and wellness.” What is most exciting for patients is the rapid onset of effectiveness. Depressive symptoms tend to improve within just 24 to 72 hours—a huge improvement over the 6-12 week waiting period of other medications. Additionally, Ketamine’s success rate of 85% is almost double that of traditional antidepressants (45%).  That is not to say that Ketamine is right for every patient.  “Every patient is different, and it is critical that they seek help from medical providers who can provide a variety of options to meet their unique needs,” says Sambunaris.  “I would encourage everyone who continues to grapple with their depression or pain to keep seeking help until they get the quality of life they deserve.”

LOCAL’S CHOICE

HOUSE WORK HOLIDAY A FRIENDLY LITTLE GECKO SCAMPERED ACROSS THE SUNDRENCHED WALL AROUND THE POOL WHERE I LAY READING THE THIRD NOVEL OF MY SPRING BREAK VACATION IN SEAGROVE, FLORIDA. Besides the song of a resident male cardinal serenading his girl, the afternoon was still and quiet. Just the way I like it. Sure, the beach a few blocks away across 30A was popping, and tan teens were bouncing off each other in Seaside, down the street, but I didn’t hear boo. I heard myself sigh and settled into a state of doing nothing while being ok with it.  You know how hard that is. The kids were happy to toggle between spring break antics, skimboarding and playing video games or watching The Office mindlessly in the super sweet family room. (After all, it was THEIR break, too.) My husband had finished a few chapters while stretched out on the mammoth white twill slipcovered sofa and biked up to Goatfeathers Seafood Market for fresh fish for the grill on the patio later. I was willing to commit to moving from my padded lounger to the other side of the deck for dinner. Followed by a moonlit walk on the beach. Later.  We found Heavenly Hideaway on VRBO. It is an unlikely 30A rental, void of any suburb-like proximity to the gigantic cookie-cutter hulks that fill the busy roads near the beach. It’s tucked away on a corner lot behind tall palms and thoughtful landscaping, just four blocks east of Seaside in Old Seagrove, a neighborhood that still feels like somewhere you’d like to spend more than a few weeks. The shady dirt roads are narrow, quiet and inviting. Perfect for an after-dinner walk.  Speaking of dinner, while there’s no shortage of dining and drinking destinations at the string along 30A (Rosemary Beach, Ayls Beach, Seagrove, Seaside, Watercolor, Grayton), the newly renovated kitchen at this house makes it easy (and even fun) to stay in and cook. One can slice, dice and peel while daydreaming (be careful), watching the sun dance on the pool through the floor to ceiling sliders at the other end of the room. The skylights over the gas range keeps the efficient kitchen flooded with light, too.  With three en suite bedrooms, plus two twins in the media room, this family-friendly ranch home feels more like a resort than a rental. Book it if you can! VRBO.com/434331 34
