JANUARY 2018 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | Jnewman@LifestylePubs.com

Happy New Year from my happy spot (sailing) to yours!

EDITOR

Sue Collins | Scollins@LifestylePubs.com

After talking to personal trainers, coaches and yogis for this new year fitness issue, one common thread ran through our conversations. Having FUN. Sure, pushing yourself to the special place that makes your quads shake and bootie burn is rewarding. But, trainers are finding that what makes us come back for more is community for commiseration and lots of laughter.  An emphasis on a finding a fitness path that leads us to that happy place is part of the plan for personal trainers and coaches who truly understand what makes us tick. And sweat.

If you’re like me, you’ll think harder about getting in shape this month and I am thrilled to bring you a quickie workout (the best kind) that will kick it into high gear. It’s about feeling good and looking good (but mostly feeling good). Our magazine is looking good this month, don’t you think? Our Lifestyle Publications family is now 50+ strong, with magazines across the country, from Del Mar, California (where one of our former writers, Ruksana Hussain, is now at the helm as editor) to Hartford, Connecticut and Rochester, MIchigan down to Birmingham, Alabama.. Like your magazine, each Lifestyle Publications book has its own personality reflecting its readers. But, all are communities that value family, local businesses and giving back. We hope you like the new look and continue to encourage you to submit story ideas about your neighbors who are working hard to make our community special. Make it your new year’s resolution to send me a note about a new business, charity or friend

The architects were challenged by the building site, already populated with an existing septic field and road setback. These hitches allowed the design team to conceptualize the house as a thin wall. “Only 20 feet total in width, the house is divided in two parts; a ‘solid’ that houses the support functions of the house and a ‘void' that contains the living spaces. This ‘solid,’ facing the road, became a deliberate opaque monumentality, allowing for a systematic unveiling of the river views as one moves around the site. On the river side, the ‘void’ dematerializes to an uplifting transparency that allows direct visual interaction with the river,” explain the architects.  Dedicated to all things beautiful and contemporary, the Kaufmans chose a cast concrete fireplace, stainless GE appliances, handy and sleek IKEA cabinets and poured concrete countertops that complement the setting, rather than overwhelm the visitor with woodsiness. While you may not want to leave River Dwelling, once you escape Atlanta, do consider dropping in a kayak up the river by Shallowford Bridge for a 2-3 hour paddle. Blue Ridge Lake is close by and easy to access from the marina for flat-water paddling in all seasons.  Hiking the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests just across the road is convenient, so you don't have to get behind the wheel for an adventure.  Rolling out of Atlanta on a Friday afternoon, this fresh vacation home offers a glowing beacon of bliss that will inspire you to think about your time in the North Georgia Mountains in a whole new way. WORKOUTS DON’T HAVE TO BE BORING OR ALL ABOUT REPETITION. Look for options that remind you of playing like you did as a kid. Example: Tennis Fitness professional: Stuart Marcus, Head Tennis professional and Junior Coordinator at St Ives Country Club in Johns Creek for the last 15 years. Primary Focus: Provides on and off court training with motivation, flexibility, cardio, strength and nutrition training for both adults and children. Why should people take up tennis in 2018: “Tennis is a great activity to help people of all ages get a great workout. Tennis can be played socially or competitively, depending on what you are looking for, and can be a great tool to stay healthy.  Tennis is also a great stress relief and is always fun with a group of friends.  Finding a tennis program near you will be the best way to get this fitness routine started.” CONTINUED >

TRENDS TO TRY

(CON TI N U ED)

FAMILY FITNESS Getting active doesn’t have to mean spending hours away from your kids. Look for options that allow you to all exercise together. Example: Mom and Baby Fitness classes Fitness professional: Michelle Whitlock, an Alpharetta-based group fitness instructor for Oh Baby! Fitness. Primary focus: Certified group fitness instructor for new and expectant moms including BYOB - Bring Your Own Baby - classes! Her classes include Yoga, Pilates, Water Aerobics, Stroller Workouts, and a Fitness Combo class that includes cardio, strength training, and yoga.  Why should parents get involved in family fitness classes in 2018: “Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. Find an exercise or activity that you love doing and do that! Instead of changing your diet and lifestyle all at once, make baby steps over time and you’ll find the right fitness journey for you! Finding support and someone to keep you motivated and moving is the key. Everyone needs a positive support person who can help encourage and motivate you along the way!”

BE FLEXIBLE Fitness Professional, Ariella Dominguez

with Grey Owl Mind-Body Studio Primary focus: Mind-body wellness From breweries to studios to public parks yoga is taking over in a brilliant manner. And, Ariella Dominguez with Grey Owl Mind-Body Studio believes the trend is here to stay. Grey Owl incorporates classes with aerial yoga, Tai Chi Qigong, mat yoga, meditation, or wellness into their schedule, and it’s seen tremendous growth.  The benefits of these soothing techniques are part of an innovation curve, and all classes incorporate some form of meditation as well. Dominguez says she knows that these exercises relieve stress, stretch the body, and are very rewarding and beneficial. Each class is uniquely adaptive, but the trend towards relaxation therapy as a form of fitness is here to stay, 6250 Abbotts Bridge Rd Suite 500, Johns Creek. BERNARD PEARSON Fitness professional: Lanny Branum and Laurie Branum Primary focus: Lanny and Laurie Branum see 2018 as the year for functional fitness where every exercise has a purpose: weight training to help build muscles to lift heavy items in the real world. They also believe people are looking to be a part of something bigger. “A gym shouldn’t just be about working out, it should also be building a supportive community,” says Lanny. After leading successful corporate careers, these Georgia Tech gradts realized that teaching functional fitness was a passion.  HEW (Hard Exercise Works) can be thought of as personal training in a group setting.  Offering multiple group sessions throughout the day, the workouts are all NAVY S.E.A.L. inspired, but can be tailored to any fitness level.  Your first five weeks include nutritional counseling, accountability partners, and a complete profile.  With a different workout planned every day, it not only keeps you interested, but trying new things such as flipping truck tires and climbing ropes. 8560 Holcomb Bridge Rd , #118, Alpharetta. 470.545.0351. The oils are extracted from the plants and distilled into amazing essential oils that can provide health benefits for a wide variety of health concerns. Essential oils can be used to assist with workout recovery and provide relief to tired muscles. They can also tame skin irritations caused by shaving, offer relief from digestive issues, soothe away headaches, alleviate symptoms of allergies or a stuffy nose. This list goes on and on. Essential oils are truly gifts from the earth and because they are made from plant compounds, our bodies intuitively know how to utilize them for our benefit. QUALITY IS CRITICAL There are many companies that sell essential oils, and not all brands are pure, high-quality essential oils.
