Step 5+ in the Global Animal Partnership, Certified Humane and Animal Welfare Approved. The demand for their holiday birds has been overwhelming for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. These birds take about 20 weeks to grow into a dressed 12-16+ lb turkey, which is much slower than the industrial turkey lifespan. In fact, commercially raised turkeys reach this same weight in about 8-10 weeks. All of their poultry roam freely on pasture and are supplemented with a non-GMO grain mix. In November, the poultry processing abattoir will be busy getting many of these birds processed in preparation for Thanksgiving.  WhiteOakPastures.com

LETTUCE EAT HEALTHY HYDROPONICS BRINGS FRESH PRODUCE TO THE PORCHES OF NORTH FULTON RESIDENTS ARTICLE CARRIE WHITNEY PHOTOGRAPHY AUBRY CANALES

EVEN AS THE FARMERS MARKETS CLOSE FOR THE SEASON, NORTH FULTON RESIDENTS SEEKING HEALTHIER, TASTIER, LOCALLY-GROWN PRODUCE CAN STILL GET LUCKY IN THE LETTUCE DEPARTMENT. Thanks to hydroponics and the dedication of two people who are passionate about sustainable growing, this vital ingredient for salads, sandwiches and more can be had all year and even delivered to your door, or actually your porch. Jeff Adams, founder and co-owner of Circle A Farms was a couple of months into his first harvest when he met Cheryl Howlin, who had a B.S. in dietetics and nutrition coupled with years of experience in sales. While Adams had grown up on a farm and achieved success in the construction industry, which allowed him to build and maintain the Circle A greenhouse, the complement of Howlin’s business development know-how helped transition the farm into a thriving local business. Lettuces from Circle A Farms can now be found at restaurants from Roswell to Alpharetta in addition to the farmers markets and a few small grocers.

14

Alpharetta Lifestyle | November 2018

More importantly for the fall and winter seasons, Circle A Farms offers the Farm-to-Porch program that delivers fresh lettuce to North Fulton residents. It’s simple. Customers order and pay online, and based on zip code, Circle A delivers to each customer’s personal porch cooler. There is no obligation to agree to an ongoing order, but Howlin has found that many customers do. “People love it,” she says. “Some people even do standing orders, which means they get the same delivery each week. Literally, your lettuce is at the most, 12 hours old.” What makes the Circle A Farms lettuce delicious enough to create such a dedicated client base is its growing process, which is hydroponic. Both a wave of the future and a system that has been popular on the West Coast since the 1970s, hydroponic agriculture, which refers to growing in water, offers significant benefits. This soilless method eliminates the need for herbicides and pesticides, so produce is clean. Even better, the water used by Circle A Farms contains just the right recipe of nutrients to grow great lettuce. “All of the nutrients that are in our water are derived from natural sources,” says Howlin. “It’s all a natural procedure. Our lettuce not only tastes a whole lot

Nicole Jones

GROWING UP IN THE ATLANTA AREA, NICOLE JONES ATTENDED PEBBLEBROOK HIGH SCHOOL’S PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM, BUT AFTER GRADUATION, HER CONCENTRATION IN THE ARTS TOOK ON A MORE VISUAL NATURE. Jones enrolled at Bauder College and earned a degree in fashion merchandising, also learning design skills as part of her studies.

ARTICLE CARRIE WHITNEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BUBBA CARR 18

Alpharetta Lifestyle | November 2018

“I always had an affinity for fashion,” she says. After working with Polo Ralph Lauren, Jones combined the skills she gained at Bauder with her natural inclinations to cofound a jewelry company and has more recently begun concepting a hat line, which she plans to expand into a larger accessories line in the near future. But it started with the jewelry. With business partner Chantel Watkins, Jones launched Honesty Jewelry in 2009, and thanks to the vast range of contacts each had – Watkins worked in the music industry – the duo was able to get their designs worn by celebrities, which proved to be a recipe for success. They made everything by hand, and in Honesty’s heyday, the brand could be found in 60 stores and was also sold online. It wasn’t just local boutiques that wanted to carry the Honesty line; shops throughout the country couldn’t get enough of the handcrafted items. Jones recalls customers waiting outside the door before an Honesty event at Sanctuary Boutique in Staten Island, New York.  Honesty Jewelry has evolved and under the name Nicole Jones for Honesty, she plans to branch out more extensively into accessories, beginning with hats.  She’s interested in fashion hats in materials like wool and felt with touches of rabbit, straw, denim and even camouflage. Jones envisions fedora-style and Panama hats that are funky and fashionable, but there won’t be any ball caps. In addition to selling the hats online, she will return to some of the boutiques that had carried the jewelry line. She will be debuting her new line of luxury hats the weekend before the Super Bowl in the ATL. “We always wanted to have a full accessories line,” she says. “The next thing I want to explore is clutches.” In fact, she’s such a fan of keeping small bags inside a big bag that friends often tease her about the many “kits” she carries.

BACK STAGE

(CON TI N U ED)

This sense of organization has reached its full expression in Jones’ closet, which she created with Peggy Snider-Houghton of Bell Cabinetry & Design. A favorite area of Jones’ new Suwanee home, the spacious closet features white cabinets and light gray hardwood floors and has a dressing area as well as a makeup station with a Hollywood mirror. Jones appreciates that everything sits inside the closet so that in a rush, items can be left out without cluttering the living space. “Everything is behind doors, so there’s nothing that’s out,” she says. “I wanted it to look really clean all the time. I have a room that is specifically for shoes and bags, and the front room is all clothes.” Specialty aspects include a luggage room, drawers for sunglasses and jewelry, a piece that holds scarves and space to hang lingerie. There is also plenty of room for Jones’ swimsuits – she has five or six drawers of them, a predilection developed in the days when she modeled swimwear.  When exiting her closet, this fashion expert can be seen stepping out in clothing picked up in favorite shopping cities like Los Angeles, New York and Miami. And she’s taken note of the trend that has welcomed high-end collaborations between luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Supreme.

The Touchdown Trunk Show, Feb. 1 and 2, will be a Pop-Up Shop at the new Salon Moraee in Buckhead, along with Teresa Caldwell's Taste Boutique. Open to the public, the guest list  will include NFL, NBA and MLB players and wives, music industry icons and fashionistas.     SalonMoraee.com 20
