Lifestyle Letter

Dear friends,

I

admit it. I got emotionally involved with one of the stories in this month’s Health & Fitness issue. I got too close. I was a nervous mess before the photo shoot, with butterflies doing a number, my head swimming. Athletes. Dedication, finesse, strength, success.   I love them all!  Meet our first ever Lifestyle Publications All-Star Team!  These sixteen amazing girls from high schools in our magazines’ readerships represent the best of the best. And, while their athletic accomplishments are nothing short of spectacular, we pause to applaud because of their balance.  Kennedy Thorne, is the captain of the Alpharetta High School champion cross country team. She is wise AND talented. "First off, you have to define your priorities and adjust your schedule accordingly. Look to your future and reevaluate what you want your life to look like and then think how might you get there," she says. We should all take her advice, on and off the field.  Venla Harkonen is in eighth grade at Fulton Science Academy. She recently helped raise funds and awareness for cancer research with Seim Across America where she clocked the fastest in the girl's mile.  She's also a Girl Scout (as was I, at her age)  "I'm a Cadette in Troop 29349. We have done projects like collecting shoes, collecting blankets for animal shelters, and I have started and run the environmental club at my school for my Silver Project." That’s what I’m talkin’ about! These girls stole my heart and I know they will steal yours too.  The portraits are by Fredrik Brauer. Happy New Year to all our stars and their families.

and the other semifinalists were chosen from an initial pool of over 3,300 nominees from all 50 states for their contribution to music education. The semifinalists were not just chosen for their teaching abilities and involvement with music education, but for their involvement and impact in students’ lives. Bernadette Scruggs, former president of the Georgia Music Educators Association, worked with Thompson on that association's board. She recounts how Thompson's "intrinsic feeling of responsibility" led her to adopt a former student whose mom and brother were "tragically killed the summer after he left her program."  "Almost two years later this young man is a part of her family and lives with her, and her commitment to him and his education and quality of life is nothing less than remarkable," Scruggs said. The orchestra is like her family, Thompson said, and she strives to keep a provides an opportunity to enhance mother/son relationships. Facing Aging and its Glory I visited Aesthetic Specialty Centre, the day after my birthday, entering the quiet and sunny office with a headache and a hopeful heart. I’d completed the patient background forms online (easy) so was quickly whisked into a spacious and dimly lit treatment room which resembled a hotel room more than a sterile medical practice office room. I appreciated that and the time Licensed Medical Aesthetician, Adina Sinasohn spent with me. She specialized in anti-aging (yes) and acne treatments and recommended a HydraFacial MD to help reverse the damage of the hours…years spent outdoors. Did you know that after the age of 20, a person produces 1 percent less collagen in the skin each year? I’m at a 35 percent deficit. In 50 minutes, my skin was micro-planed (a deft straight blade removed what didn’t belong), cleaned, lightly peeled, suctioned, boosted and nourished. The results was a baby bottom-soft face and a list of at-home and in-office treatments recommended by Adina.   ASC offers a full menu of cosmetic surgery, dermatology, wellness and aesthetics. Body contouring, breast enhancements, facial rejuvenation and injectable fillers are carefully considered, with Dr. Marc Yune at the helm. His team of welcoming and educated professionals gave me the confidence to dive into 2017.  I will be back! Sue G. Collins

L

ooking for a new workout routine for 2017? Sick of running? Not coordinated enough for Zumba? Why not try Pilates? Vernette Channel, who manages and coordinates the Pilates Program at Life Time Fitness in Alpharetta, sat down with Alpharetta Lifestyle to give an expert’s view on what Pilates is and why anyone can do it.

LifeTimeFitness.com

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is not just an exercise. Pilates is a system of physical and mental conditioning that can enhance your physical strength, core stability, flexibility, balance and coordination as well as reduce stress, improve mental focus and foster an improved sense of well-being.  WHO CAN DO PILATES?

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MARIA SMITH

Pilates is perfect for all ages. Whether a soon-to-be mommy is seeking to increase and maintain stability and coordination with her growing tummy, a senior looking to improve posture and alignment to prevent falls, or the athlete training for performance enhancement, injury prevention or rehabilitation, Pilates is appropriate for all ages. Life Time Fitness in Alpharetta is even launching a Kids Pilates program to improve the posture, coordination and strength of younger generations. WHY IS PILATES SOMETHING WE SHOULD DO?

Pilates allows an opportunity for the body to re-align, re-educate and rehabilitate muscles, joints and bones. The movement patterns provided by Pilates improves circulation, digestion, mental fatigue, respiration and stiffness. These benefits overall can reduce injury, stress, dysfunction and increase longevity and sense of well-being. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED TEACHING PILATES?

Pilates allows an opportunity for the body to re-align, re-educate and rehabilitate muscles, joints and bones.

As a classically trained ballerina, Pilates was an intimate aspect of my training regimen. After dancing professionally, I transitioned into the academic world by obtaining degrees and certifications in psychology, exercise physiology, rehabilitation, neuroscience and chiropractic.  Now as an integrative healthcare practitioner, I see people are desperately seeking to take control over their health. I serve as the vessel that empowers them to regain that control.  At Life Time Fitness Alpharetta I am privileged to work with clients hands-on to develop and implement a comprehensive exercise prescription that will promote healthy living. Additionally, I have the ability to order labwork, metabolic testing, and facilitate nutritional coaching in order to compliment my clients' exercise prescriptions. WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET STARTED DOING PILATES?

Take baby steps. The first step is to consult your primary physician to discuss any restrictions you may need to address prior to beginning a new exercise program. Next, find a fitness professional for a consultation to help you discover your goals. Finally, don’t forget to set an appropriate plan to achieve them properly and effectively. And then get started! 28
