COVENANT HOUSE SLEEP OUT The Sleep Out is a fundraising and awareness campaign. In November, brave individuals will head outside in cities across North America, carrying sleeping bags and cardboard to serve as their beds. They lay on the sidewalks in 15 cities, looking up at Covenant House shelters where young people are safe and warm inside. Last year, these leaders raised more than $6.5 million to continue the vital work of Covenant House. Nearly 2 million kids in America will face homelessness this year. THE Windward Appeal ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS

B

RAD KOVACIK had a charmed childhood, though (like most of us) he didn’t realize it until he was looking for a home and community for his young family. He and his wife Sarah wanted to establish roots before their oldest daughter, Avery started kindergarten, with plans to remain planted until their kids graduate high school. Brad had grown up in Windward, and with Alpharetta’s recent growth, they decided to look in the lake community that includes 195-acre Lake Windward, The Golf Club of George, Windward Lake Club, parks galore and 40 neighborhood districts. “I realized many of the friendships built in Windward 25-plus years ago are still strong and now our kids are growing up playing together.  We still have family in Windward so it felt like home (again) immediately,” Brad said. They met realtor Rhonda Shell at an open house for the Craftsman home in Windward that ultimately won them over. “It's difficult to really enjoy the outdoors while you're working full-time and raising two kids.  However, our home's proximity to the lake, swim/tennis, & sports park will allow our family to be outside all the time,” said Brad.  The Windward residential community was first developed in the early 1980’s and 30 years later, home range in prices from $300,000 to over $3 million.  “There is an attractive mix of home styles and prices in this very unique and wisely developed, award-winning neighborhood of 43 distinct districts,” said Shell.  “Windward is special, appealing to young families like the Kovaciks, empty nesters and families with teens, offering a variety of architecture and home styles.”

Mary Kaye & Scott Pepperman's home in Windward (Schooner Ridge).

R ANDY AND D'MARIE CHAMBLISS retired and moved to Alpharetta in late July from Hermosa Beach, CA. They were planning on building a log home on Lake Lanier but stumbled on Lake Windward while searching for a lake lot. “Rhonda Shell helped us find the perfect house on Lake Windward.  Every room has a lake view.”   The private lake is home to pontoon boats, sail boats, kayaks and canoes, and of course fishermen (catch and release). The Windward Lake Club is a private club on the southwest section of the lake offering a first-class tennis center, swim center, marina and recreational programs.  SCOTT AND MARY KAYE PEPPERMAN and their family have lived in Alpharetta 20 years and moved to Windward last year.  “We always wanted to live on the lake and to stay in the same community was an added blessing,” said Mary Kaye. “Our children are a wide variety of ages. Windward meets all our needs from an afternoon or birthday at the sports park for Kyle or Colby to a boating get together for Katie and Ryan or sunset happy hour for us!! We look forward to tennis and golf when life slows down a bit more.” Since 1990, The Golf Club of Georgia has stood for unmatched service, camaraderie and hospitality and an unrelenting devotion to daily turf quality and performance on two TPA courses.  Both Lakeside and Creekside have hosted The Georgia Cup, which each spring brings together the United States and British Amateur Champions for an 18-hole match that has been shown on The Golf Channel. T.J. KIM, his wife and daughter wanted a ranch house in a safe neighborhood with good schools and proximity to church, shopping and the highways. They wanted to stay in Alpharetta. “It impresses me as a forward-thinking city.  It is pre-planned for a balanced mix of residential, shopping, cultural centers, office and green space.”  Mary Kaye Pepperman agrees. “We love Windward and Alpharetta truly has it all...but most importantly, warm and welcoming people, most from somewhere else, willing to support each other and lend a hand to grow this wonderful community.” “I have a special place in my heart for Windward. It’s a very unique community that truly appeals to homeowners in any stage of their lives,” said Rhonda Shell.

BUILDING BRILLIANT BACKYA R DS ARTICLE CHRISTOPHER HASSIOTIS | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY LEE

I

t's one thing to imagine the potential your backyard holds. And it's another to see landscaping plans on paper. But what really allows a homeowner to fully realize what a space could transform into is to actually walk through a perfectly manicured space — and think about how good it feels. That's just the goal with the new showcase from Miller Landscaping, a Woodstock-based company specializing in outdoor spaces. Their second location, opened in mid-2016, the Miller Landscaping showcase provides potential clients a place they can explore and see the workmanship on display. Boasting a pool, fire pit, outdoor kitchen and grill and more, it's an impressive space. The new showcase is located in southwest Canton, in a subdivision called The Reserve at BridgeMill near the banks of a finger of Lake Allatoona. It's the latest development of a company more than 30 years old. Bruce Miller started Miller Landscaping back in 1985. Focusing mostly on plants and sod at first, Miller grew his company's knowledge and skill sets over the decades, and now focuses more on outdoor living, incorporating but not limited to: pools, patios, decks, arbors, kitchens, putting greens, water features, walls, fencing, irrigation, lighting and plants. They've turned steep, at-first-glance unusable back yards into multitiered patios prime for entertaining. They've taken formless expanses of grass and dirt and created wonderfully intricate gardens with rows of seasonal plants and sculpted walls. They consult with customers to meet specific needs, like a recent in-ground pool they constructed that was built to be accessible for a homeowner with disabilities. Miller Landscape’s team also creates a computer-designed 3-D rendering of a project rather than just the typical bird's-eye view of sketches, letting homeowners change the point of view to really imagine themselves in the space and how it will really look from any perspective. "I'd say the personal aspect of the company sets us apart," says Britany Heater, the director of marketing and sales for Miller Landscaping. "Bruce is very much involved in the projects. Even though there's an assigned project manager, he likes just to peek in and let people know he's on top of things. He's been doing it for 30 years, so he's great with people and is very understanding of the business needs but also the special circumstances that come up in a project." CONTINUED >

“W

ouldn’t it be cool to have our own farmers market or

coffee shop?” Ryan Bowersox would say to his wife Beth. “That would be a great way to serve the community!” Beth would say. For years, this was the couple’s dialogue, but it was no more than an idea. They would frequently look at spaces for lease, but the prices in Atlanta were high. For years, their dream remained a distant one.  Until one day, on the way to take family photos in Alpharetta, the family drove past a building for lease on the corner of Hickory Flat Road and Birmingham Highway.  “We both looked at each other, and it was serendipitous,” said Beth. “The building was gorgeous, and we knew at that moment, this would be the perfect spot to open our market.” Within 24 hours, Beth and Ryan had drafted a business plan and sent it to the landlord, and six months later, the building was renovated. The couple’s dream for a farmers market only needed a name, and they settled on Wilbur and Rudy’s Farmtable, named after their children, Wilbur, age five, and Rudy, age three.  The first few months that the Bowersox had the building, they used it primarily as a farmers market, selling locally-made jams and jellies. The building was huge, and the farmers market only took up half the space. “Throughout this year, we’ve had a better idea about how we fit into the community,” said Ryan. “Customers would come in and offer suggestions; ‘you should serve coffee,’ or ‘why not have wine and appetizers at night…’ and It just molded into a little bit of everything, based on customer wants.” The Bowersox’s original idea was to have a one-stop shop for locals to get gourmet dinners to-go, but it didn’t take off. In December, Wilbur and Rudy’s sold Christmas trees and gave away free cups of coffee, and it was an instant hit. CONTINUED >
