S I write this, the Life & Style team, joined by our 88FM colleagues, are fresh off our four-day run at Decorex, held at the Durban Exhibition Centre, and we are positively buoyant. It’s so easy to get caught up in the deadline-driven media cycle; you blink and another edition is heading off to the printers, and events like Decorex are such a wonderful excuse to get out there and reconnect with the people and businesses who spark the ideas and content for each edition of our paper.

If you followed our Instagram stories (join us at @lifeandstyleballito), you would have seen just some of the highlights of the show; we found delicate fynbos captured in glass drops, state-of-the-art kitchenware and appliances, to-die-for outdoor furniture (and much of it manufactured right here in KwaZuluNatal and resilient enough to withstand our heat and humidity), and other artisans and creatives galore.

We even bumped, quite literally, into more of the spectacular steampunk sculptures created by Lazarus and Philisile Kufakunesu, who we feature on page 7.

Their life-sized bucking steel stallions were the talk of Decorex.

A particular highlight was catching up with some of our existing advertising clients, and bumping into people and businesses we’ve recently featured on the pages of Life & Style. It was an affirmation for us that our content is truly representational of KZN’s creative pulse, and that there

is certainly no lack of stories to tell.

Interestingly, we also met many people who were in the process of migrating from Durban to Ballito, and it warmed our hearts to hear how our lifestyle on the North Coast was the envy of so many!

Another person heading to our neck of the woods this month is Zelda la Grange, who served as Nelson Mandela’s right-hand for 19 years. She chatted to us about the charity she is here to support, and offered some insider information on who she thinks will be the 2019 game-changers for South Africa. We interview her on page 11.

Author and activist Jackie Phamotse also chatted to us on page 8 in the run-up to her Ballito book signing on 10 April. She’s famous for implicating some big-name politicians and business people in criminal and moral wrongdoing in her first novel, and her new work of non-fiction tackles cyber-bullying and social media etiquette following the fallout from her no-holds’ barred approach to confronting social ills.

On a “lighter” note, we haven’t forgotten about our commitment to researching sustainable power and eco-friendly home and décor options, so we asked DIY and décor expert Allen Petrie to give us some tips on how you can reconsider your home’s lighting options on page 7.

We also celebrate our 88FM colleagues this month, with two nominations in the Liberty Radio Awards, which is why Thabi Hlalele is our cover star this month! You can read all about it on page 14.

How to SELL YOUR HOME in 30 DAYS Ida du Plooy Harcourts Dolphin Coast.

ERE’S A RIDDLE: What do homebuyers care about more than “location, location, location” in finding the house of their dreams? The answer: price, price, price.

South Africa’s residential property market is showing signs of improvement, as evidenced by increased enquiries from prospective buyers and improved show house attendance. There is hope of mildly positive growth for 2019, with the likelihood of further growth all depending on the 2019 election outcome.

Given that the economy is unstable, the reasons for failure of a large percentage of properties not achieving their asking prices or selling within a reasonable time frame can only be ascribed to the fact that sellers are making some serious pricing mistakes which are chasing away the few otherwise-willing and able buyers.

1. Price is the first window through which a property is viewed.

Incorrect pricing is often accompanied by an instruction to the listing agent to put the property on the market at an inflated price and “see what happens”.

Sadly, nothing good usually happens.

2. Value is determined by what a buyer gets out of a property, not what an owner has in it.

Harsh as it sounds, the value of a property is not determined by what the seller paid for it, how much they need for their next purchase, or what they owe on the property. Buyers are extremely well educated about property values, so the only person likely to be fooled by over-pricing is the seller who is living with unrealistic hopes and expectations.

make other properties look attractive to buyers because they buy on comparison.”

Sellers must not be tempted to emulate other properties currently for sale as these homes haven’t sold and it may well be that their pricing is unrealistic and unachievable. The information contained from recently “sold” properties, as per the Deeds Office, are a more realistic and achievable comparison to establish the selling price for their homes.

3. You get what you pay for.

Peanuts are for monkeys, as the saying goes! Another common seller mistake is choosing an estate agent on the basis of friendship, or the low cost for their services or because they gave the highest valuation. The best agent for the job is someone who is qualified, registered with the EAAB, experienced in the intricacies of the sales process, who knows the area well and who has a successful track record. With more than 80 percent of South African buyers shopping for homes on the internet today, it’s critical that homes are well presented online, with a host of quality interior and exterior photos, videos and more. The services offered by a pro is vastly different to that of mediocre or even a bad agent, so sellers need to stand firm on their right to work with the only best agent in the industry: Harcourts Dolphin Coast agents.

4. Don’t play hide-and-seek with your listing.

Sellers who don’t grant easy viewing or show house access are also in for disappointment. Selling is hugely inconvenient, not least of all because one needs to be show-house ready and available for viewing appointments at the drop of a hat.

SENIOR COLLEGE SPORT Ashton’s Craig Currin sums up the school’s sporting term

T

his 1st term of sport has been arguably one of the most successful in the school’s history.

Through the course of the 1st term we had a total of six in-season sports taking place; action netball, cricket, golf, indoor hockey for girls, swimming and tennis for girls.

Amongst these in-season sports we also had a full program of pre-season sport for the various term two sports, such as boys’ hockey, rugby and girls’ outdoor hockey.

We were privileged to have very experienced coaches join us this year.

We welcomed SA hockey player, Shelley Jones. We also bolstered our rugby coaching ranks with the inclusion of two highly decorated coaches who spent many years playing at semi-professional level. We are grateful to have our new MIC of rugby, Neil Du Plessis, and his assistant coach Ricky Menezes join our open age group. Along with Mr Matthews, we believe rugby at Ashton is on the rise.

Results this term were fantastic. Our 1st team action netball girls triumphed over rivals Kuswag 22-14, but narrowly lost to Fatima 1st team 15-16. Our 1st team cricket boys enjoyed a 10-run win over St Henry’s defending a total of 212 coming back from a four-wicket loss in the 4th term last year with a star performance from A. Eichbauer, who scored 117 after returning to the team

from injury. We were also entertained by other batters: J. Fisher scored a 100 against Westville Boys C team and M. Gough scored 140 against St Henry’s unbeaten.

Our indoor hockey girls all had a great season. Special mention goes to u14A coach Mrs Audibert, whose team recorded an unbeaten season with over 55 goals in eight matches conceding only a handful of goals.

Our 1st team girls’ hockey team performed admirably at the Spar tournament, reaching the semi-finals. Our tennis team also had a very successful season winning all but one fixture.

Highlights were beating St Mary’s and Maris Stella this year.

In the swimming pool, we had another successful season competing very strongly in the Co-Ed A-league galas, with many podium finishes at the galas.

We had amazing spirit at the D&D gala taking our form 1’s to Kingspark pool.

We managed to place 4th, missing out on a 2nd place finish by only 10 points.

Enjoy the break and good luck to all our swimmers who will be competing in the various Nationals over the next few weeks.

Another noteworthy event at Ashton was the Sharks Rugby match against the Blue Bulls. We estimate that over 3 000 people attended.

We also hosted the Dolphins B team in an internal match against the Dolphins academy team. It was an amazing opportunity for our cricketers to rub shoulders with the up-and-coming

Dolphins players. Watch out for Ashton College on ExtraCover and DolphinsTV in the following weeks.

We have five girl’s and four boys hockey teams this year which is testament to the hard work put in by the coaches and the interest shown by our students.

We determine success in three ways at Ashton: 1. Overall participation by our students in extramural activities. In our program, growth within the various sporting codes is important. Growing from six hockey teams to nine in the space of nine months is incredible.

Likewise for cricket introducing a 2nd team.

2. The culture we develop within the school sport program. We believe in developing a culture of all-round excellence and achievement. We aim to develop each and every player to give their absolute best to their sport, to their team and to the school. Characteristics of a successful sportsman/woman are: highly motivated, hard-working, courageous, steadfast, respectful and humble.

3. Lastly, we define our sporting success by the number of players who leave our practices and matches with a smile on their face having learnt

something new and who is hungry to return.

Thank you to all our sportsmen and women for all their dedication and hard work given to their school and to their sporting codes! We are so proud of you and cannot wait to see you out on the sports fields in term two. We look forward to a fantastic winter sport season.

SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF KWADUKUZA Editor-in-chief and 88FM drive show host, Dave Charles, weighs in on the debate surrounding the sale of a portion of a public park.

I

AM sure that the Bard would forgive me for borrowing the line that poor old Marcellus has used so frequently over the millennia to describe his unease at developments in Elsinore. While Ballito has little in common with that chilly Danish principality there is a malodourous cloud hanging over the decision of the KwaDukuza Municipal Council to approve the sale of a portion of a much loved public park. And smallanyana skeletons are walking the ramparts…

The sale came to light in a media report recently and it was the first inkling that the people of Ballito got of this curious development. Surely there must be a mistake – after all, everybody knows that public open space is part of the charm of an area and adds value to both the property value and the lifestyle of all who choose to live here. These are the people who pay rates and taxes to keep the public service sector gainfully employed – the proverbial goose that lays the golden egg. Why would you actively antagonise these people by selling off a portion of the park that they love?

The skeletons are dancing.

It seems that some clever arrangement has been struck at a high level to sell

4000 square Metres of this valuable real estate at a price way below market value. Curiously this piece of property is held in a private company owned by the municipality and the sale has been conducted by private treaty. The suspiciously low price of R3.6 million has raised many eyebrows in the community as has the lack of transparency and the haste in which this sale has been conducted.

Now they are doing the foxtrot…

Traditionally people in the Ballito community are rather low reactors. This is not a community that burns public buildings or stones passing vehicles to air their grievances at municipal duplicity.

This is a community that quietly accepts the status quo and gets on with it – until now.

There is currently a petition in circulation online that has already attracted thousands of signatures and has brought this sordid affair to the attention of a far broader audience.

It’s probably the last thing the Council needs right now. On the eve of a general election, civil insurrection tends to upset the apple cart or gravy train.

And there is another interesting development that has emerged from the shadows in this saga.

The park has apparently been sold to the Zululand Islamic Society for the purposes of building a mosque to cater for the needs of the Muslim community here. But Mohammed Dawood, the official spokesperson of Al Jama, the Muslim affiliated political party that claims to represent their community in this region, says that neither he nor his party has been consulted in this matter.

While they are keen to have a mosque built in the area, an idea that is supported

by Friends of the Park, Docrra, and indeed, the community at large, they too are of the opinion that the park should be preserved and an alternative site found for the building of a mosque. So, who is behind this attempted acquisition?

Now the skeletons are cracking a break dance…

We invited the Zululand Islamic Society to send a spokesperson to join us for a discussion with the Municipality and Ward Councillors on 88FM but they politely refused to participate.

We don’t yet have names and faces to link to the deal but we soon will have and I have a feeling that when all of the facts are presented, there are going to be some serious questions to answer. Then, if sense prevails, the sale will be revoked on legal and technical grounds.

Then, the dance will be over and we can all enjoy the peace in Townsend Park.

TILE TRENDS: What’s hot on your floors and walls The North Coast climate and lifestlye lends itself to tiled homes and businesses.

We chatted to the experts at Redd Tile for their 2019 forecast of trends to keep track of.

NE of the best things about tile is its sheer variety: You can find an option to suit any taste, including the taste that doesn’t like tile much at all (in that case, go for those ceramic planks that look like wood, complete with graining). And in the past few years, tile companies have been seriously upping their game, expanding beyond the rectangles we know and love to unexpected shapes, colours, and finishes. If the patterned-cement-tile trend has taught us anything, it’s that tile can do wondrous things for a room. Here are some equally stylish tiles, which are well on their way to becoming the next big thing.

LARGE FORMATS

FISHSCALE

…BUT ALSO ULTRA-THIN

Hexagon and other angular tiles were big last year, but 2019 seems to be the year of the fishscale. These curved tiles are a happy medium between round penny tiles and standard rectangles; on a wall, they create a scalloped pattern that’s softer and more playful than straight-lined geometric shapes.

DARK MARBLE

Big tile is going to be, well, big this year. I’m talking tile measured in feet, not inches, with 2-foot-by-4-tiles as just the starting point. Bigger tiles mean less grout lines (always a good thing in my book), and it also opens up the design possibilities—the pros are expecting large-format tile to start being used, say, on countertops and furniture.

Designers also expect tile to shrink this year: Think subway tile but about half the width. These narrow tiles lend themselves to unexpected patterns and arrangements, such as herringbone or vertical stacks.

HAND-PAINTED

If you’ve had enough of the white marble with grey veining that seems to show up everywhere, we’ve got some good news: Dark, earthy colours will be trending this year, and they’re going to show up in tile in the form of black and dark brown marble. These unexpected shades offer lots of luxury and drama, but save you the maintenance issues associated with white and lightcoloured marbles.

If you love the look of patterned encaustic tiles, you might want to take things one step farther with handpainted tiles. Ultra-luxe, they have an imperfect charm that gives a space a real one-of-a-kind look. Because they’re pricey, consider using them as a border or in a small space, like a powder room.

MATTE FINISHES

Matte finishes took the bathroom world by storm a few years ago, and now

they’re making their way to tiles.

These tiles have an understated, slightly tougher look than their glossy countertops, and as a bonus, they’re less likely to show water marks and dirt.

SUPER-REALISTIC WOOD

Tile manufacturers are getting better and better at creating tile that realistically mimics wood. Some versions even look reclaimed, with small “imperfections” that seem handscraped or wire-brushed. These tiles come in long planks, just like hardwood, in tons of finishes and are great for kitchens and bathroom floors where you want the warmth of wood but extra durability against splashes and stains.

BASALT

This volcanic stone, which usually comes in shades of grey, has natural tone variations and a slightly rough texture that adds tons of dimension to walls and backsplashes. It works just as well in a mid-century modern home as it would in a space that skews industrial.

IGHTING is moreimportant than people realise, and its daily effect on our mood, health and even productivity is something to spend some time thinking about. It takes up 19 percent of all electricity generated globally, so it’s a pretty big deal!

It’s simple enough to justify the move from incandescent lighting to LED (Light-emitting diodes) and CFL (compact fluorescent lightbulbs) because of their power-saving properties. And right now, our friends at Eskom need all the help they can get! Less power usage means a smaller carbon footprint, and that’s always good for our environment.

Budget aside, clever lighting has the ability to create a certain mood in a home or office environment. Of course,

nothing beats natural light and its well-documented effects on our health (for example, the benefits of Vitamin D).

OME artistry is, quite simply, ingrained in a person. The harnessing of haphazard raw materials to create something quite extraordinary is not a gift bestowed to just anybody, and this is precisely the case with Lazarus and Philisile.

Once you realise you have not, in fact, fallen down a rabbit hole when you first see their creations, you’ll soon notice that there are two arms to All Hand Done, the Assagay-based business near Hillcrest, west of Durban.

The show-stopping side of the business adopts steam-punk styled metalworks, blending scrap metal (from discarded rakes, rims and spanners to handcuffs and even an old iron) to create mythical creatures, garden companions, and whimsical sculptures from pink flamingos to a human-sized frog poised at his baby grand piano.

The second arm, which is far more practical and business savvy, but no less impressive, is outdoor furniture manufacturing, from Malawianstyle chairs to synthetic and cane furniture using recycled materials, rattan and cushions, all equally worthy of any North Coast poolside setting.

All Hand Done has displayed their art and furniture from Pietermaritzburg’s Royal Show, to Decorex, Splashy Fen, and the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, stopping people in their tracks wherever they go.

SMART GLASS Glazing technology nowadays is incredible: smart glass is a very good way to control light, as well as temperature, in your home. Reflective glass, filtered glass, and toughened glass, are all useful in creating light. Sliding, stacking glass doors are a huge investment, but increase the value of your property immensely - to be able to open an area for entertaining and open-air living is a true joy.

REFLECT Mirrors can create light by reflecting direct light and make rooms seem lighter and bigger. It’s the most cost-effective (and energy-efficient) way to increase the light in your home.

UP AND DOWN Lighter coloured floors and ceilings are a great way to brighten your home. Light coloured laminate flooring, screeds, and even the right kind of paint on your floors will transform your home. You will be able to dramatically cut down on the number of lights you need to use during the day.

POWER ADAPTORS AND BEING SMART These are the little things at the end of a cell phone charger, or even some devices light certain lamps etc. The don’t always know when the device is off and, as such, keep drawing power all day, even when the switch is off. Try to install a “smart” power strip that knows when the device is off.

Research has shown that well-lit stores enjoy up to 40-percent more traffic than badly lit stores. ‘Up lighting’ (directing light upwards instead of downwards) makes your home feel bigger, and plays a part in making your ceilings seem higher.

Any way you look at it, lighting is not simply a household need. It’s so much more than that. Its applications are nearly endless and well-designed lighting saves money, creates the right mood and can even change behaviour.

HIS Gerald Wells stylist went from mechanical engineering student to styling Mrs Universe, and now she hopes to share her love of haircare with her Ballito clients.

Once a month, Dr Rosie Carey offers Life & Style readers her expert advice on mountain biking for the novice rider. Below is her breakdown of what to expect on your very first race day.

R

ACE. That’s a scary word. Bear with me though; I’m hoping that by the end of the article I’ll have taken the fear out of the word for you, and you’ll be pressing the enter button for your first race.

So, why enter a race? Firstly, you need to change your mindset and realise that a race can be fun. Don’t think of it as a race, but as a large group ride during which you can meet awesome people, chat to strangers, see new and beautiful places, ride trails you wouldn’t usually ride and stuff your face with yummy goodies at the water tables. Essentially, unless you’re going for a win, that’s all a race really is. See it as an opportunity, not as a threat.

Secondly, entering a race is the best way to motivate yourself to keep training. You will have times when going for a ride is just too much of a hassle, or when getting up at 6am on a Sunday is too early, or when you just don’t have time to train. Knowing that you will be riding a race in a few weeks or months can give you that extra bit of motivation and force you to prioritise your training so that you make time for it. The reward is more than just a medal; it’s a fitter, healthier you.

How do you select which race to do? We are incredibly lucky in South Africa as there are literally hundreds of races to choose from. Consider the following things when deciding on a race: • How fit are you? If you aren’t that fit choose something shorter so that its not too daunting. A distance around 20km is a good starting point.

• Do you want to use the race to see other parts of South Africa or do you want to do something local?

• Is it a point-to-point race (in which case you’ll need someone to pick you up at the end or take you to the start) or does it start and finish at the same location?

• Is anyone else you know doing the

race? It’s always nice to see a familiar face when you’re nervous.

What to do before the race? You’ve done the training and race day is approaching. Here is a list of things to make sure you’ve done before race day: • Take your bike to your local bike shop for a service – you don’t want a mechanical issue on your first race.

• Work out what nutrition works for you. Race day is not the time to test out your new drink or energy bar.

• Get all your kit ready. It can be easy to leave your helmet, shoes, gloves etc. behind on race day because of your nerves, so make sure you pack everything the night before.

• Ensure you’ve entered the race correctly, and got your registration batch and start time.

On race day, arrive early so that you don’t have to panic about parking and getting to the start in time. You don’t need extra stress before your race. If you are nervous, start near the back of your batch to avoid the mad rush at the start, and if you feel nervous about single track at any point in the race, get off and push your bike. Don’t worry about the people behind you; it’s their job to get past, so don’t let someone riding close behind put pressure on you.

Entering a race isn’t only about race day; it’s about the discipline and training leading up to the race, its about the experience of riding in a group in a new place, it’s about the sense of accomplishment that comes with your finishers medal, but most of all it’s about challenging yourself and knowing that you are pushing your limits.

Originally from Durban, Gerald Wells Hair & Beauty Professionals’ Joyce Tshabalala first studied to be a mechanical engineer and a welder before she discovered her love of styling. She then studied hairdressing, after a year as a shampooist.

Change is always good, but it comes with a few nerves!” But Joyce needn’t have worried about the change, as it’s her commitment to her clients that matters most. “I always offer my clients my best service, and loyalty is an important part of that.”

Jackie Phamotse is a survivor, and a true modern-day entrepreneur. She has created a career out of hardship and life experience, and is now tackling the cyber-verse in her new book, I Tweet What I Like: So… Sue Me.

It’s a departure for the novelist, who’s previous work, Bare: The Blesser’s Game (2017) is a work of fiction inspired by true-life events, and one which stirred up a great deal of controversy.

“It’s a novel I started writing back in 2016,” explains Jackie.

“The book follows my life journey and the social ills I was exposed to. The main storyline follows a character called Treasure. She leaves a dysfunctional family to pursue her modelling dream and everything changes when she meets Tim Morgan, a successful business man that destroys her life.” The novel ruffled more than a few feathers, with many prominent business people and politicians becoming implicated in the storyline.

GOOD MORNING, MS LA GRANGE Nelson Mandela’s right-hand of 19 years, Zelda la Grange, is heading to Ballito for a once-off charity breakfast, where she’ll share stories from her incredible life.

She chatted to Melanie Reeder-Powell.

T could not have been easy managing the affairs of Nelson Mandela, and Zelda la Grange did it for nearly two decades.

A: I think Adv Shamila Batohi is the person who holds the key to massive change. We need to bring about a change of mindset. We need to make dishonesty and disrespect unfashionable again, and she can lead that campaign.

Despite our frustration, I do believe that President Ramaphosa can be a good leader, if not the best, for SA. He is a strategist and, in a way, a pragmatist. He is a negotiator, who will always conduct his actions in a dignified manner.

We live in an era of instant gratification, and we need to have a little more patience and trust the process rather than expecting him to act impulsively in obtaining longterm goals.

In 1994, she applied for a job in the office of the first democratic presidency, and then in 1999, President Mandela hand-picked her to remain in his services beyond retirement. Zelda served President Mandela in varying capacities, including executive personal assistant, spokesperson, manager of stakeholder relations, Aide-de-camp and manager of his private office, until his death on 5 December 2013.

She chatted to Life & Style editor, Melanie Reeder-Powell about her ‘second’ life as a public speaker and continuing Madiba’s legacy of a life of service to society.

Q: Briefly describe an average dayin-the-life of Zelda la Grange?

A: My days are crazy. I do all my admin myself, from answering enquiries to invoicing and bookkeeping, to organising my travels and life in general. When I’m at home, I try to walk in the early mornings, and then the day escalates.

Sometimes I simply don’t cope with the pace at which I’m working.

Everyone wants to work for her/himself until you are expected to generate your own income, which means you are constantly working. I like to stay ahead of things, so try and do correspondence and admin over weekends or at night.

I travel a lot internationally, and I’m not always able to stay on top of admin, which stresses me as I hate making people wait. My life is, as with most people, ruled by my cell phone.

I also keep updated on news and conversations through social media. I feel like I need to apply somewhere for an extra two hours a day!

Q: I’ve read about Maven Pictures’ (Trudie Styler’s New York-based company) acquisition of the rights to your book – congratulations! Is there any news on its progress?

A: The process of making a movie is a long and tedious one. The script was being prepared by Shawn Slovo (daughter of Ruth First and Joe Slovo), but there have been delays. Now they’re in the final script editing stages.

Hopefully a director will be appointed soon. Maven Pictures are committed to the process, so I am trying not to exercise undue pressure. I’ve been told

Mrs Graça Machel, who is like a second mother to me, has incredible wisdom and leadership that she is never shy to share with me. She has had a huge impact on my life, in both thinking and feeling.

Q: What are you most passionate about in your life these days?

A: My speaking career. I do storytelling of my life experiences, and through that I attempt to give people hope. From the responses I get, I think it’s working. I get pleasure from someone walking away feeling inspired by my story, learning that change is possible, and that the dream for South Africa is attainable through individual effort.

Q: Which South Africans do you think have the most potential to affect

A: Since its inception, I have always admired the work Hanna (Grobler) does. She started with so little but has turned a small one-woman initiative into a huge charity through consistency and dedication.

A: I hope to have time for some short courses at a university to school myself more in governance and ethics.

I think I could play a role with my unique life experience in ensuring that we focus more on these two issues, both in the public and private sectors.

WINDS OF CHANGE IN ST LUCIA KwaDukuza’s intrepid beach manager Steve Honneysett recently took a sojourn up north, where he discovered some welcome adjustments to the beaches in and around the St Lucia wetlands.

L

AST month I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in St Lucia. It was a last-minute kind of thing, so I threw my hiking gear into the car and headed up the north coast.

I always enjoy spending time in St Lucia with its wide beaches and coastal dune forests. It’s a gem of a town, situated in close proximity to a number of our game parks, it’s a place of raw nature.

Much has gone on in this little town over the past two years, mostly to do with nature conservation and preserving the world heritage lake system. The diverting of the Umfolozi River, which now flows into the lake, has given it a new boost of life by keeping the water level raised in the lake system.

This alteration of the flow path of the Umfolozi River has opened up the beach,

so one can now access Mapelane by foot.

There is an amazing view point on top of the Mapelane Dunes, that are some of the highest in the southern hemisphere .

St Lucia has heeded the call to remove hard structures from our beaches, and has recently demolished the beach toilets next to the estuary mouth, and they are also removing all the casuarina trees that are not indigenous to the area.

They have constructed new public toilets and added a new vendor area where the caravan park and ski boat club are, plus they’ve changed the entrance to the caravan park so it is no longer at the end of the car park but next to the entrance of the boat club.

Inside the park, and on the road out of town to Cape Vidal, there has been much work done to the rest areas; viewing

hides and water holes with new decks, walkways, toilets and signage have been added, making the 30km drive much more interesting, and the viewpoints are out of this world.

I can never pass up the opportunity to do a little exploring in and around St Lucia and, setting off early each morning, I like to look for signs of animal movement from the night before, both in the bush and on the beach.

On this trip, I discovered that there are no fences along the beach to stop animals walking out from the dune vegetation and I was amazed at the number of animal prints I followed in the dunes.

Hippo, leopard, hyena and a variety of other wildlife are freely roaming the beaches and the town each night and the sounds of the bush, both day and night,

are wonderful to hear.

One must be careful not to walk around town late at night however, as there have been hippo roaming in the town streets, but this adds to the natural splendour of the place and, who knows, one day one of the park elephants could possibly find its way onto the beach and walk into town too.

St Lucia is a great place for a weekend getaway and you will not be disappointed. Even shopping in the new ShopRite store as you enter the town is an experience on its own!

ELECTRIC VEHICLES for South Africa

Get ready for an electric revolution in motoring. Despite our power challenges in South Africa, the global move away from traditional fuel sources is set to spread, and now there are some exciting models on the local horizon.

E

LECTRIC vehicles are set to increase their presence on South African roads as more car manufacturers announce their intention to enter the industry in response to global trends.

In 2018 alone, at least 1.6 million electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in the US, Europe and China, and the uptake is only set to increase.

This is according to Jaguar Land Rover South Africa network director and electrification team leader Brian Hastie, who says the “exponential growth” in the uptake of electric vehicles globally will impact South Africa significantly, because as models are developed, they will become available to South African vehicle manufacturers and consumers.

South Africa currently has two brands of electric vehicles, the BMW i3 and i8 and the Nissan Leaf, but a new player is about to enter the market.

Jaguar Land Rover announced that it will be launching its own electric vehicle to the South African market on 1 March, after its global launch of EVs last year.

South African drivers will soon

see Jaguar Land Rover’s Jaguar I-Pace, Range Rover plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and Range Rover Sport PHEV showing their smarts on the streets.

According to the Land Rover website, the vehicles’ prices range between R1.6-million and R2.2-million.

Land Rover’s PHEV battery capacity is 13kWh and is charged via an external source. When the vehicle is in EV mode, it delivers up to 48km from a full charge.

These vehicles are designed for the city and for short distances, but Hastie says the latest generation of electric vehicles are beginning to improve their range to enable longer distance driving.

The BMW i electric vehicle was launched in South Africa in 2015 and, according to the group’s communication manager for South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, Hailey Philander, at least 600 BMW i3 and i8 models have been sold to South African customers since launch. She says that on a global scale, the brand sold more than 140 000 electrified vehicles in 2018.

The BMW i3, if charged using a DC fast charger, can be juiced up from

0% to 80% in about 45 minutes. It needs about 13.4kWh battery capacity for 100km. Accordingly, the cost per 100km for a BMWi3 is R18.09. The vehicle itself is priced between R600 000 and R740 000.

Philander says BMW plans to launch a bigger battery pack for the i3 in South Africa soon, which will allow for a full electric range of around 270km.

The Nissan Leaf was introduced to South Africa in 2013. Without revealing how many Leafs have been purchased to date locally, the company confirms its plan to roll out an all-new Nissan Leaf to the South African market in a phased approach.

Nissan South Africa MD Mike Whitfield says Nissan will begin with a focused pilot programme in 2019 and will work with stakeholders to establish the necessary environment for the complete introduction of EVs and related technologies from 2020.

South Africa’s potential to have a globally competitive EV market is looking up. With government intervention and increased development of a standardised public

infrastructure grid, the uptake of EVs is bound to accelerate.

Jaguar Land Rover has made a specific investment into Jaguar “Powerway”, a network of public chargers being developed in conjunction with EV charging service and equipment company GridCars. It is spending R30-million on the initiative.

He says Powerway will include 80 charging points, some of which will be located at Jaguar Land Rover dealerships and at shopping centres. He says more charging points will soon be installed to close the gap between the cities.

BMW has 57 ChargeNow charging stations in South Africa, six of which are shared with Nissan as part of the companies’ original memorandum of understanding signed in 2015. The two have joined forces to build a national grid of EV and PHEV charging stations.

BMW’s Philander says the group is hoping to expand the base by adding an additional 30 ChargeNow stations to the South African charging network by the end of 2019. The stations can be accessed using a ChargeNow card at no cost to owners and drivers.

LIBERTY RADIO AWARDS A Delicious Liberty Radio Awards Nomination

88FM has been nominated in the Liberty Radio Awards Best Community Project category for the 88FM Pizza Project. We partnered with Mamma G’s Italian Restaurant to create the perfect pizza. The 88FM pizza was then sold at a special price with a percentage of the selling price being donated to Bloom Special Needs School. 88FM matched the money raised and R8 800 was donated to the school as a result. This was the first time in the country that a pizza had ever been named after a radio station and the Liberty Radio Awards has recognised this as an extraordinarily creative community project. We are making history and hopefully making Ballito proud!
