BALLITO TO UMHLANGA

OUT ON THE WEEKEND

W

ITH the weather as unsettled as it is, I took the opportunity to enjoy a little early Sunday morning sunshine on a beach walk with my beloved Sue and Otis. Otis is still a puppy – German Shepherd Dogs mature at about eighteen months and Otis has yet to celebrate his first birthday. Puppies are, by nature, exuberant and curious and, although he regularly attends puppy school and has even apparently graduated to a more advanced class, he is still a bit of a handful in public. But he loves the weekend beach walks organised by local dog lovers who enjoy socialising and exercising their best friends like this. All the dogs on the walk are generally well– behaved and enjoy the camaraderie of the pack. The same cannot be said for some of the fishermen we pass on the walk from Salmon Bay to Zimbali.

I must confess to a feeling of ambivalence towards fishermen these days. I used to enjoy the sport but now I am far more interested in protecting and conserving what little remains below the waves. So, I am not entirely mortified at the spectacle of fishermen backing gingerly away from the pack of menacing looking canines eagerly eying the bait and other offensive matter littering the beach around them. Of course, you have to make a bit of a show of calling your sharp fanged hairy devil to heel, but secretly I am rather cool with

this mild intimidation. The amount of poaching taking place since the fisheries officers were disbanded by our wonderful government, is appalling. No one is enforcing the regulations and the marine animals are being locally decimated. On a happier note, I joined Charl and Lelani Lensley who recently established North Coast 4×4 Trails and Adventures, on a short recce on Saturday. They were reconnoitring a new trail for 4x4 enthusiasts in the area and it instantly rekindled my interest in the world of off road adventuring. I have owned more 4 wheel drive vehicles than I can remember. It’s a hobby that I can strongly recommend to anyone with a desire to enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family and the fact that Ballito now has some professionally organised trails and activities on a regular basis makes this even more accessible. I am excited to confirm that the recent work done on our radio antenna for 88FM has greatly improved our reception in the area and you can now stay tuned to the Voice of Ballito in local areas where it was previously marginal or erratic – even when you are tackling a trail out in the sticks! While I was exploring the 4x4 trail I was amazed to see the skeleton of what has got to be the biggest geodesic tent on the continent looming high over the green fields near Sugar Rush Park. This is the beginning of the construction of this year’s Rage Village and, by all accounts, it will be the best organised rage village ever. Brothers Mat and Guy

I must confess to a feeling of ambivalence towards fishermen these days. I used to enjoy the sport but now I am far more interested in protecting and conserving what little remains below the waves. Bower of Extreme Events have built an incredible business supplying tents, furniture, lighting and everything else you can possibly need to host magical events of every description. Their giant geodesic rage structure has just taken the game to an entirely new level and it looks awesome. Welcome to another edition of Life & Style coming to you from the heart of Ballito where there is so much waiting to be discovered!

JOB

Steph Wills has turned a healthy hobby into a thriving home-grown business that’s set to take the country by storm.

Using her knowledge of nutrition and how unusual natural produce could be combined to create something both delicious and healthy she crafted her first deliciously layered treat that set Instagram ablaze. That initial response to a challenge by her sister for the best smoothie of the day title, had just become a business – everyone wanted one! And so, Propa Smoothies was born. Initially stocks were limited and you had to order in advance to have any real hope of getting one, but soon the word spread and Steph ramped up production to meet the demand. Because they are naturally thick and creamy, they can be blast frozen and thawed which means they can travel. And now they do – country wide! Steph’s husband has joined her to manage logistics, she has a team working on production and they are filling the world with love and goodness – how cool is that!

S

TEPH Wills is a full time mom who makes smoothies. Well, that’s nice, but how is this of interest to you? I’m glad you asked. You see, she makes AWESOME smoothies – hundreds of them every day. Okay, she has a little help now, but it wasn’t always that way.

What started out as a pic on Instagram to prove to her dietician sister, Kim that she could make a better smoothie than her, turned into a booming business. In this economy, that’s nothing short of inspired. Steph comes from a family with health and wellness at its core. Her mother owns the iconic Lifestyle Health store in Ballito and they worked together for several years before the arrival of her sons. After the birth of the second one, she really wanted to get into something that she could do part-time that would provide her with an income and some stimulation.

Welcome Back to the

LA MONTAGNE HOTEL

The fee introduced at the La Montagne a while ago caused a stir among the locals. Now have an exciting alternative. Dave Charles unpacks the opportunity for you.

W

HEN last did you go to the La Montagne Hotel? For many in Ballito, this was the place to go for fun, food and entertainment and the pool deck was particularly popular when the beach became a bit too hot to handle!

I am deliberately using the past tense here because, as most locals know, there was an outcry when the hotel introduced an entrance fee for non-residents and so people stopped going to their favourite local resort. But I think there has been quite a bit of misunderstanding regarding the entry fee and the reason it was introduced so hopefully this article will help. Firstly, the fee. “It’s outrageous – R120 per person means that if I take the wife and kids to the pool deck for the morning, I am in for R600 before we even have a cold drink!” Firstly, if the kids are 12 or under, you don’t pay the entrance fee for them – they are free! Secondly, you get an R80 voucher for food and drinks for each R120 entrance fee you pay so, effectively the entrance fee is just R40 per adult or teenager which is extremely reasonable considering the facilities you have access to. Your R40 goes towards paying for the upkeep of the facilities. More people in the pool means more chemicals are required to keep things lovely. Extra staff is needed to maintain standards and the amenities come under extra pressure. They have to be cleaned and maintained, they need to be safe and secure and,

importantly, numbers need to be limited to ensure that you enjoy good service. It’s cheap at the price. But, as a local resident of Ballito and surrounds, you qualify for a La Montagne Frequent Guest Card that gives you free access to the facilities. All you have to do is to fill in an application form giving all the required details and, in about a fortnight, you receive the keys to the

Beverage Manager, Braam Fourie

castle – your own card giving you free entrance to your favourite local resort. Of course, there are certain terms and conditions that you need to agree to as one would expect. Food and Beverage Manager, Braam Fourie, introduced me to the card system and is always delighted to welcome locals to the resort. They have all sorts of exciting things planned for the coming season and you will do well to find out more on www.lamontagne.co.za Welcome back to your favourite local resort – we will see you there!

ASHTON MATRIC STUDENTS SHINE at VALEDICTORY TONIGHT I see a constellation of stars before me. A constellation is a group of stars that forms an imaginary outline or pattern on the celestial sphere. As a Matric group your patterns represent youth, enthusiasm and hope. Since stars have their own independent motions, all constellations will change slowly over time. As individuals, you will move far away from each other, you will travel your own path and your light will shine in many different ways. As your school career comes to an end, remember the people who have helped you navigate your path and enabled you to shoot into the mesosphere.” Extract from address by Mr Mark Charlesworth, Academic Head at the Matric Valedictory.

ABOUT

Glenda Thompson once again presents a view of some of the interesting events and activities in her sphere of influence that you may be interested to explore.

E’RE counting down the days to holiday time in Ballito, Christmas and New Year’s Eve festivities and all the joyous things that this time of year brings!

It was fantastic to get into the whole World Cup Rugby vibe in and around Ballito. We headed off to the Litchi Orchard on October 20 to watch the Springboks shatter Japan’s dreams of reaching the World Cup semi-finals. There were so many screens set up around the North Coast for the Finals and no matter where one watched, the end result that saw the Springboks annihilate the English, brought bucket loads of joy to the whole country – and long may it last.

I love the quote from Jigar Gor “Yoga is not about touching your toes, it is what you learn on the way down”. Having just completed my 200 hour Yoga teachers training course with instructor Lauren Stanton and 8 other Yoga enthusiasts at the Yoga Studio, I understand what he means. There is so much to learn. From a health perspective, a recent review in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology shows that yoga reduces the risk of heart disease, it helps with weight loss, helps reduce chronic pain, fatigue and is generally a great way to start the day! We ended our 200 hours celebrating at Eat Street in the Market – where else? If you’re keen on doing the course Contact Lauren on info@ theyogastudio.co.za – it’s well worth it!

I was delighted to meet the FirstLady of South African magazines, Jane Raphaelly, in the Associated Media Publishing offices in Cape Town a few weeks ago. Jane, who is in her eighties, still goes into the office on a regular basis and gives talks on women’s empowerment and the importance of entreprenuership in SA. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely road to follow unless you have a support system of some sort. Business coach, Marlene Powell, is a useful resource and can be reached on marlenepowell@actioncoach. com for advice.

Finally, we headed off to the inaugural Standard Bank KwaZulu-Natal Top Business Women gala evening took place at the Elangeni and Maharani Hotels in Durban, and was held to recognise and celebrate some of the industrious and enterprising female business leaders, entrepreneurs, employees and social change agents in the province. During the evening, six of the women profiled by KZN Top Business were recognised for their achievements, including Cheryl Govender, owner The Cake House, Lindiwe Rakharebe, CEO of Durban International Convention Centre, Nomfundo Mcoyi, founder and CEO, iCebolethu Group, Chief Operations Executive of the Hirsch Group, Margaret Hirsch, Eleni Kwinana executive head, Vodacom, KZN and Cindy Norcott, owner Pro-Appointments and Pro Talent, founder and chairperson of the Robin Hood Foundation.

CHOOSING YOUR

COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENT Dietitian Kim Wilson unpacks the supplements for a healthier, happier you.

NOW AVAILABLE AT LIFESTYLE HEALTH NOW AVAILABLE AT LIFESTYLE HEALTH

T

IGHTER and moreyouthful skin, better mobility, pain-free joints, healthier hair and nails, and more. Don’t these sound like attractive benefits? Collagen in its many forms has taken over South Africa and many people have seen and felt the benefits, particularly when it comes to joint health and mobility.

There are, however, countless Collagen products on the market, varying widely in price. So how do you know which one to choose, or which will be worth the price tag for you? Let’s break it all down for you. TYPES OF COLLAGEN There are many different types of Collagen, but the main ones present in South Africa are Type I, Type II, and Type III. These types are found in different parts of our body, and so supplementing with the different types tends to serve varying roles. Type I: This type accounts for 90% of the collagen found in our bodies. Type I collagen provides structure to our bones, skin, connective tissue, tendons, cartilage and teeth. This type is most abundant in marine-derived Collagen, and bovine-derived Collagen. Type II: This type is found primarily in the elastic cartilage that cushions our joints. Type II Collagen is most abundant in chicken-derived Collagen and bone broths. Type III: This type supports the structure of our arteries, organs and our muscles. Type III Collagen is most abundant in bovine-derived Collagen.

In South Africa you will easily find all three types of Collagen on the shelves, you simply need to read the label. If you wish to target overall health of your bones, skin, connective tissue etc. then you will want to go for a source rich in Type I and III Collagen. If you wish to specifically target your joint health and reduce pain in your joints, you will need to choose a source rich in Type II Collagen. Hydrolysed Collagen vs Collagen Peptides In order for our bodies to access the amino acids found in collagen, we need for the whole collagen molecule to be partially broken down. This allows for improved absorption into the bloodstream. Hydrolysed Collagen and Collagen Peptides are actually two names for the exact same thing. These terms simply mean that the full-length collagen molecule has been slightly broken down to allow for our bodies to readily access the active amino acids.

ORGANIC AND GRASS FED SOURCED COLLAGEN You know how we keep harping on about choosing to eat Organic or Grass-Fed wherever possible? The same applies to collagen. Grass-Fed Collagen is created and derived from animals that are raised according to strict standards: they have never been given antibiotics, they have been able to forage and feed on greens, and they were not confined like factory animals. Choosing Organic and Grass Fed sourced Collagen not only gives you peace of mind that you are avoiding any added toxins, but you can also know that you have chosen not to support factory farming. This is the more ethical choice. PLANT-BASED OPTIONS Firstly, just to clarify, there is no such thing as a true plant-based or vegan Collagen. Sadly, Collagen only comes from animal sources such as marine, bovine and chicken. However, when you break Collagen down, it is essentially a specific sequence of amino acids. Scientists have in fact found a way to get bacteria to produce the same combination of amino acids overseas. In future we may see plantbased Collagen enter the South African markets. For now, however, taking a combination of Collagen-boosting nutrients may help: vitamin c, zinc, copper, manganese, proline, and b vitamins. Choose Your Collagen Wisely There are some fantastic brands on the shelves in South Africa, and we really are fortunate to have Collagen that is of a very high standard. As a quick overview of your selection process: 1.Decide on your desired outcome (better skin, improved joint health, etc.) 2.Choose your Collagen Type 3.Find a Hydrolyzed Collagen or Collagen Peptides 4.Choose Organic and/or Grass-Fed If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you may need to wait a little longer until we get Vegan Collagen in South Africa, but for now you can supplement with Collagen-boosting nutrients to get the benefits.

IT’S MOVEMBER Dr Rosie Carey explains lurks behind the symbolic moustache Although you may be forgiven for thinking that facial hair fashions from the 70’s have made a revival, they haven’t. The retrolooking moustaches you are seeing on men at the moment are in response to ‘Movember’. The word Movember is an amalgamation of ‘November’ and ‘moustache’: a neat little trick to raise awareness during November of men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer and depression. These are all major men’s health issues, but for the purposes of this article, I will focus on testicular and prostate cancer only. Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly occurring cancers in men and, although it is often a very slowgrowing and non-aggressive cancer, it can spread if left untreated. Perhaps the most important piece of information to know about prostate cancer is that it can be treated if it is caught early enough. This makes screening for prostate cancer essential.

Ideally, screening should start from the age of 40 with an annual PSA (blood test for prostate specific antigen). Regular annual measurement of PSA also allows your doctor to follow the trend of your PSA levels. Digital rectal exam can also form part of screening, especially if you have any worrying symptoms. Symptoms of prostate cancer can include difficulty urinating, decreased force in urine stream, pain in the pelvic area and erectile dysfunction. There can be an overlap with symptoms of prostate cancer and those of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as well as prostatitis, so don’t panic if you recognise any of the symptoms, but do make sure you see your GP or Urologist for a check-up to make sure that there is not a malignant cause to what you are experiencing. There are several risk factors for prostate cancer. Age is the most significant risk factor, with increased age leading to increased risk. Family history of prostate cancer and a family history of certain breast cancers also increases your risk of prostate cancer.

The most modifiable risk factor for prostate cancer (i.e. the one that you can actually do something about) is obesity. Obese men diagnosed with prostate cancer are more likely to have advanced disease that is more aggressive and more difficult to treat. Management of prostate cancer depends on how advanced the cancer is and can range from simple surveillance in very low-risk cases, to local radiotherapy, to surgery and radical radiotherapy. As with all cancers, earlier detection means easier management and usually a better outcome. Testicular cancer Testicular cancer is far rarer than prostate cancer and is most common in men aged 15-35. Although it has a bad name, testicular cancer is very treatable, even when it has spread beyond the testis. Symptoms of testicular cancer include a lump or enlargement in either testicle, a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum, a dull ache in the abdomen or groin and pain or discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum. If you experience any

Wha ts your app hea lth que sti 071 185 ons to 1 4 Dr R osie 71. Catc h Thu on 8 rsda 8FM ys at 3 :30p m

of these symptoms you should see your GP or urologist, especially if the symptoms last for longer than 2 weeks. There are some risk factors for testicular cancer. During normal prenatal development, the testes descend from the abdomen into the scrotum. In certain cases this doesn’t happen and men who have an undescended testis have an increased risk of testicular cancer even if they have had surgery to correct the problem. A family history of testicular cancer increases risk and testicular cancer is more common in white than black men. There is no way to prevent testicular cancer but regular self-examination can lead to earlier detection. Diagnosis is made with a combination of ultrasound, blood tests and possibly surgery. Management depends on the type of cancer and what stage it is, as well as your general health. Let the moustaches around you in Movember act as a reminder to get yourself screened because the key to combatting cancer is early diagnosis.

Your Hair Questions, ANSWERED Nikolas Michael – Hair Extrodinaire – gives you the lowdown on some of the more common styling questions I'm trying to do something with my hair that makes me look younger. Should I change the colour, get bangs, or cut it short? . There is no wrong option here. It’s all down to understanding your client’s needs. A change of colour and shorter hair will take years off. Bangs will also soften up a look and bring a more youthful approach. They all could also do the opposite as a stylist I've experienced it and learnt that what works for one face shape or texture won’t work for the other. Understanding skin tone and using colours that help complement it is key regarding colour. So my official answer here is if you’ve booked a consultation with an experienced stylist that understands all these things you will DEFINITELY come out looking much younger. How can I make my natural curls look defined all day? Two things come to mind here that are most important first is condition if the hair is over processed it's not going to work in your favour. Second is using the correct products, to make sure the condition is maintained and to help motivate the curl and enhance it so that it is easy to work with and effortless How do I flatten flyaway hair? This is a tough question as there are thousands methods, but what works for one won't work for the other as texture plays a huge roll. Some girls like using serum and others feel it makes the hair oily. Others like hairspray and but some feel it makes the hair dry or sticky. I believe AGAIN it all starts at the consultation with your stylist and it varies.

EARLY SPECIALISATION IN SPORT

T

HE reality is that the number of kids making it to the elite level in sport is small. There will always be outliers (think 2yo Tiger Woods), but research into this area does not show any significant difference in the lifetime success of specialists over those who played multiple sports whilst at school. There are many ‘late starters’ in professional sport who only come into their own later, often with exposure to multiple sports and cross training during their physical development.

More significantly, early sports specialisation by kids has shown to present a 250% higher injury risk compared to multisport exposed athletes. A healthy, injury-free body is a prerequisite for future success so mitigating any increased risk is important. Kids are not little adults when it comes to skeletal maturity, and exposure to chronic, repetitive loads often on a year-round basis can have significant consequences to their skeletal development and long-term joint health. Unfortunately, surgeons are now seeing more and more younger sporting patients with damaged anatomy. Exposure to different sports leads to a broader spectrum of motor learning and body development. Sports physiotherapists use this knowledge in knee rehabilitation, where exposure to unpredictable load and change of direction scenarios is better than giving anticipated challenges. The body becomes more prepared for the randomness of the ‘real world’, by learning how to react and move in different ways to prevent injury. Early specialisation also sees much higher rates of drop out before true

potential is reached. Perhaps it is a natural selection process, ‘working out’ those who don’t have that ‘mental toughness’ or ‘resiliency’, but at the elite level this is clearly a critical factor for success. Sport is supposed to be a positive influence on a young life and performance anxiety leads to both physical and mental burnout. So let kids be kids and make sure their sporting experience is fun. The goal of any extra-curricular activity, physical education and junior sports program should be to develop and promote natural athleticism. Exposure to a broad variety of physical and physiological loads across multiple sports provides the stimuli for developing skills not learned through a single activity. Gymnastics is a great example of an activity that develops overall strength, body control, balance, awareness etc. So what can parents and coaches do to bulletproof kids from injury and burnout? Get rid of this mentality that more is better. Simply expose them to a range of sports and activities during their developmental years. They will thank you for it when they are older and have their bodies intact! Only then will your child have the skills required to succeed at the elite level. Elite sportspeople earn big money and enjoy celebrity status everywhere. Sounds awesome and that’s why some parents invest huge amounts of time and resources in a child who shows promise for a particular sport. Is this a good idea? Andrew Leipus unpacks the reality below.

HE Reach for a Dream Foundation has given hope to countless children fighting life-threatening illnesses. Kerry Donkin is branch manager for KZN, and has to strike the balance between having both a tender heart, and tenacity.

Residents are urged to come in numbers and also keep time. Issued by KwaDukuza Municipality together with the Ward Councillor, Cllr Dolly Govender. MN: 248/2019

How did you get involved with Reach for a Dream? I was approached by an agency for the position at RFAD, as I had the experience they required. At the time, I was not too familiar with the foundation, but I took a leap of faith and went for the interview. I was offered the job in 2015. Did you always want to work with children? I have always loved children, maybe because I’m still a child at heart. However, I did not ever imagine I would be working with children, especially life-threatened children. I always wanted to do something that involved sport. As I grew older, I wanted work that challenged me, as I get bored easily and most importantly, I always wanted to be able to have a job that had meaning and purpose, so when RFAD came along it felt like the perfect fit. As there are days where you go from a boardroom, meeting a CEO of a company to climbing a jungle gym with a dreamer – I get the best of both worlds! What does a typical day look like? My job is to ensure the region is running smoothly. There is no such thing as a typical day! Some days you are swimming in admin, others you are running around to various meetings, or traveling KZN to find and fulfil dreams. My main portfolio is to find donors and to guide the team as they assess and plan dreams and projects. In KZN, we can do up to 35 dreams a month, as we have many children we work with. We have an amazing team that always goes above and beyond. Your job is not an easy one - do you have any hobbies or special interests that help keep things in balance for you?

IN OUR MONTHLY PROMOTIONS

I find strength in God. He is the rock on which I build. I also enjoy playing and watching sport, I currently play club hockey for Crusaders and this is the best form of stress relief for me. What is the most rewarding part of your job? What is the most challenging? The most rewarding part is seeing the smile on a dreamer’s face. No matter what the dream is the

GET INVOLVED •Donations: small or large, and not necessarily monetary; you can donate in kind, product, hotel accommodation, vehicles, venues etc. •Supporting our fundraisers, such as Slipper Day on 8th May 2020. •Volunteering: We welcome those that have a heart for children and want to help

reaction is always the same, one of complete surprise and joy. This moment is priceless and it is what inspires me to get up and find funds to make these moments possible. Nothing will ever match that feeling when a dream gives you a hug and thanks you for making their dream come true. The most challenging for me is when we do not reach a child in time. This is always hard for us. Finding funds is challenging, and I am sure it will always be, however it does not compare to knowing we are racing against the clock to get to a dream child in time. What does Reach for a Dream do? For 30 years The Reach For A Dream Foundation (RFAD), has brought hope, joy and healing to South African children between the ages of three and 18 years, who have used their dreams to fight lifethreatening illnesses such as cancer and leukaemia, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, kidney failure and blood disorders. There are countless children and their families in South Africa who are strained emotionally, physically and financially by this. RFAD seeks to alleviate the strain by providing an opportunity of realising their dream. RFAD offers the child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to an illness. MOOIMAAK MAKEOVERS PATRICIA VIVIERS

Patricia Viviers The transformation

YES, YOU CAN REVERSE SUN DAMAGE

If you’ve been watching Mooimaak, KykNET’s most exciting makeover show you’ll know the Skin Renewal team can work miracles when it comes to turning back the hands of time. Their expertise was evident when it came to treating one of the show’s recent transformation patients, Patricia Viviers. A 52-year old widow who once had to hold down three jobs to support her children, things weren’t always easy for Patricia, but her family’s love and a passion for the great outdoors got her through the hard times, although she did neglect her skin and garnered a lot of sun damage. Fortunately, the Mooimaak team - which included Skin Renewal’s Dr. Andre Truter and therapist Bernice Crause - could help her reveal a more youthful-looking complexion with a series of life-changing treatments over a period of three months.

TURNING BACK TIME

SKIN CONCERNS: Severe Sun Damage • • • • • • • • •

Severe Ageing Sun Damage Hooded and Tired Eye Area Lax Skin Complexion Rough Skin Texture Volume Loss Dynamic Wrinkles Dehydration Skin Sensitivity

Patricia’s sun damage presented as severe pigmentation, a loss of volume and skin elasticity so Dr. Truter tackled it using a multi-pronged approach - using three different lasers as well as Photodynamic Light Therapy and carboxytherapy. Of all the laser treatments, the CO2 fractional laser was the most intensive as it removes the outer layers of damaged skin and requires between seven to ten days of down time. Still, the results really are worth it. Not only does the laser dramatically improve the look of pigmentation, it also stimulates new collagen production that minimises deep wrinkles and scarring.

TREATMENTS: Skin Rejuvenation • • • • • • • • •

MAKING MAGIC WITH INJECTABLES

Another way the Mooimaak team stimulated Patricia’s natural collagen production was via carboxytherapy. This involves injecting carbon dioxide (CO2) gas just beneath the skin’s surface to induce a mega-boost in circulation that encourages new collagen growth. Other injectables that made a visible difference included dermal fillers to plump up her lips, fill the lines around her mouth and restore volume to areas in which it was lacking and botulinum toxin to relax the wrinkles on the upper half of her face.

ABOUT THAT BODY

The Mooimaak team didn’t just rejuvenate Patricia’s face. They addressed her body too, starting with a skin-plumping Xela Redermalisation treatment to improve the severe dehydration, lines and pigmentation on her chest and neck. Patricia was also put on a medical weight loss programme, the Renewal Institute Diet. It involves an eating plan, taking supplements and administering HCG injections to treat the resistance to leptin, the hormone that tells us that our body is full. Patricia found the diet very easy to follow and will be the first to tell you it was ‘so worth it’, having lost 15 kilograms in just three months!

EMMA ROGERS CROSSFIT FOR DUMMIES

Dave Charles took a coffee break with the CrossFit queen of Ballito – and ditched the custard slice.

E

MMA Rogers is an excellent ambassador for her business. She owns a local CrossFit gym and we had arranged to meet at a coffee shop in the Lifestyle Centre Market to talk about it.

Although we had never met before, I had no difficulty spotting her in the crowded room. It takes extreme form to rock active wear of the micro variety and Emma totally looks the part. To mere mortals such as me, she positively radiates good health and vigour which is completely at odds with the custard slices and chocolate brownies that I had my eye on before

she arrived. Confidence – that’s what it’s all about. Fitness creates self-confidence which is instantly appealing. This would explain the worldwide growing attraction to this form of extreme sport. Oh yes, it’s extreme – listen to what Wikipedia has to say on the subject: CrossFit is promoted as both a physical exercise philosophy and a competitive fitness sport, incorporating elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, girevoy sport, calisthenics, strongman, and other exercises. It is practiced

by members of over 13,000 affiliated gyms, roughly half of which are located in the United States, and by individuals who complete daily workouts (otherwise known as "WODs" or "workouts of the day"). CrossFit has been criticized for allegedly causing people to suffer from unnecessary injuries and exertional rhabdomyolysis, a possible life-threatening breakdown of muscle from extreme exertion. So, okay, you can possibly die from it but I would imagine that that’s half the attraction. This is the exercise of champions! Obviously you are not going to die

at Emma’s CrossFit gym. She is highly qualified and impeccably trained to ensure that you get optimal results no matter what your present level of fitness may be. But you will get extraordinarily fit if you stick with it. Classes are limited to small numbers under the guidance and control of Emma and her team and, by all accounts they are fun and varied. You can have a free session to see if it’s for you if you want to try it. Give Emma a call to find out more, or grab a custard slice and wobble on! Emma Rogers – 081 716 5540 www.crossfitballito

Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate is leading the way in estates which combine aesthetics and an eco-conscious approach. With a strong sustainability ethos underpinning the estate, Elaleni has taken this a step further to bring considered, thoughtful landscape design into the development.

at the entrance of the estate, which he cultivated from small specimens himself. Lucas explains further, “Spekboom plays a major part in the landscape philosophy of Elaleni. We wanted no nonsense evergreen plants that are hardy and self-sustaining with minimal maintenance. What was especially important is that we wanted something that can reduce the carbon footprint of the estate as a whole and Spekboom was the answer! The Bonsai trees at the entrance of the estate add a stylistic and serene touch and the supine twists of the trees mimic the soft ebbs of the water below - it is a very peaceful and welcoming sight.”

to as Pork Bush, or by its Latin name Portlucaria affra, it has been thrust into the arena as it is one of the best Carbon conversion plants on the planet and can convert vast amounts of Carbon to Oxygen - a vital weapon in the fight against climate change and the warming of our planet. As a self-sustaining plant, it requires very little water, can grow in extremely harsh conditions and can even propagate itself without putting down roots. Plants that are under duress due to limited resources will simply grow more branches and leaves rather than flowering to conserving energy. Throughout Elaleni there is barely a single planting area where Spekboom isn’t present. 1200 specimens introduced to Elaleni now cover several hundred square metres. Lucas has brought a unique and fine touch to the estate with the inclusion of several 50year old Spekboom Bonsai trees placed

In order to bring the Elaleni vision

to life and create an estate designed to enhance its natural beauty while upholding the sustainability ethos, a professional team of landscapers, led by mastermind landscape designer, Lucas Uys, was appointed to manage this. Bench-Capon continues, “The swamp fig forest in Elaleni is 120 years old and is an extremely important asset to conservation. Our commitment to conservation and sustainability does not stop there- we wanted this to guide the landscape design of the estate while still being a tasteful ode to the indigenous flora and coastal vegetation within Elaleni. We got Lucas on board as he has a real passion for conservation, and we knew he would be able to bring our vision to life and weave this thread through the estate. “ This design is being led by a small and unassuming indigenous succulent plant, the Spekboom. EVELOPER of Elaleni, Wesley Bench-Capon expands on this, “Elaleni is committed to sustainability and eco-conscious living, and this is why many of our Homeowners have chosen to live at Elaleni specifically. All Homeowners are required to submit a landscape design to our review panel in order to get the go-ahead for their build; this is how we can ensure the sustainability ethos is upheld while at the same time guiding Homeowners on how best they can do this in their own home gardens. The forest sites within the estate are individually owned and each includes a section of the forest in their stand which is retained as part of the estate green belt. The 17.5ha Elaleni Swamp Fig Forest sits in a wetland and is protected so access is only granted to golf carts, bicycles and pedestrians.”
