PIONEERS RETURN FROM TASSIE EMPTY-HANDED

A GRADE

The road trip to Tasmania is always a tough one and when your captain, key playmaker and NBL recruit are all unavailable, it makes it even tougher. That was the scenario facing the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers and with no Tom Daly, Brad Hill or Majok Deng, taking on the highly fancied Hobart Chargers in the first leg of the road double loomed as a challenge at best. The match was a genuine arm wrestle with Hobart never leading by more than eight, a lead established early in the second quarter, and the Pioneers, never enjoying more than a six point buffer – that margin coming late in the third. With a minute to play the scores were still locked away, 104 apiece, but Mathiang Muo had ice running through his veins as he converted two free throws to snatch with win with 12 seconds to play. It was temporary replacement Tim Coenraad and import Luke Thomas that kept the Pioneers in touch in the opening stanza and the early signs were they were the only viable avenues to the basket and despite Coenraad ripping the second quarter to shreds with a 13 point effort, the support started to come and the perimeter shooting of Erik Burdon, Kane De Wit and Kyle Tipene started to have an impact on the scoreboard. After trailing by one at the first break, the Pioneers then enjoyed that lead at the half. Coenraad continued to be the star, hitting a three with only six seconds played in the third, as the Pioneers started to mix up their offence and find alternate avenues to score. Luke Jamieson hit his first points and started to loom as a factor, while Burdon and De Wit again hit the scoreboard from three point territory and with a quarter to play, the Pioneers held a slender two point lead. The Charger captain, Craig Moller, fired off a three to start the last and from that point on it was literally a basket for basket contest with the Chargers with their noses in front when it counted most. Jamieson lifted in the last, scoring nine of his 14 points, but in the end, all that mattered was the Chargers had the lead when the final buzzer sounded. The tightness of the contest was reflected in the stats sheet with nothing separating the two

sides in terms of field goal percentage, three point shooting and rebounding. It was a performance that would have heartened coach Richard Hill, knowing if his side can get some more wins under their belt, create some momentum and also welcome back the missing stars, they can mix it with the best and will still be a contender. The 10 point loss to the more lowly ranked North West Tasmania the following night was a stinging blow and all came down to a sluggish start. The Pioneers trailed by 12 at the first change and despite a last quarter surge, had left themselves too much work to do against a fresh line-up. The Pioneers return to the Icehouse this Friday night to host the bottom ranked and winless Canberra Gunners. RESULTS Hobart 108 d Mount Gambier 106 (T. Coenraad 39; L. Thomas 25; E. Burdon 15; L.
