The gentlemen of moving for more than four decades With more than 42 years experience Duell’s Furniture Removalists is now the home of Ausline Removals. With their qualified team they can re-locate you to any destination, whether it be right next door or any location within Australia. “The Gentlemen of Moving” can come in and do a complete full pack of household goods to ease the pressure from the move, and also have storage sheds if your goods need to be stored prior to relocation. Duell’s main office is located at 1 Scott Court, Mount Gambier, and you will find all your packing needs from various sized cartons, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, Stanley knives and plastic covers for furniture. Duell’s helpful staff can also assist with any queries on how to pack specific items. Duell’s Furniture Removalists pride themselves on their ability to carry fragile goods. They specialise in antiques, new furniture and art work. With regular runs to and from Adelaide three times a week, both inland and coastal, Duell’s can offer you back loading rates. Obtaining a quote is as easy as a phone call or going online to www.duells.com.au and www.auslineremovals.com.au and fill in the inventory form and submit it. Duell’s Furniture Removals fleet have numerous vehicles to suit your needs varying from cars, utes, vans and small and large trucks. Over the years, Duell’s Furniture trucks have covered literally thousands of kilometres and have never had a major accident, which is a credit
to the drivers associated. To accommodate the inclusion of Ausline Removals, Allan and Jason have ordered new trucks, one of which arrived this week and the other will arrive in a couple of weeks. Both new trucks will be decked out in the traditional purple of the Duell’s fleet. Allan has always liked purple and back in 1973 when Allan was looking for a different colour that would make his truck stand out, he decided on purple and has stuck with it since. People advise sighting “The Blokes in the Purple Trucks” in various locations across Australia. Trucks are all being changed to environmentally friendly and are all euro/range. Duell’s self-storage units are located at three locations around Mount Gambier at 1 Scott Crt, 1 Pollard Close and 22 White Avenue. All locations have 24 hour a day access every day. Household goods, cars and small boats are all suitable to store in secure and leak proof sheds. You put the lock on the shed and you keep the key. Duell’s Removals are also in the process of obtaining a larger depot to accommodate the expansion of transport and storage sheds. Duells Removals, a locally owned and family operated business has a strong standing in transport in the South East with Allan Duell’s grandfather delivering goods with a horse and cart in the city’s earliest days. Allan and Jason are carrying on the tradition and deliver goods around the city in the latest environmentally friendly trucks.

An orientation day at South West TAFE on August 19 will open the door to new opportunities for people with disabilities. The orientation day will feature fitness, drumming, art, group challenges and a barbecue along with information about South West TAFE Certificate 1 courses in Work Education and Transition Education. The event is being organised by current students in disability programs. Disability education teacher Tanya Landreth said it was open to a range of prospective students with different disabilities. The students will join groups to take part in a round robin of different activities. Current students will help with the activities and will run a barbecue. “We’re trying to get the students to run events so they have real-life experiences,” Ms Landreth said. During the year the students also run a disco, a movie night and camps. “We really want them to be actively involved in practical and community-focused experiences,” Ms Landreth said. After a pilot last year, this is the first fully-fledged orientation day for people with disabilities at South West TAFE. The TAFE programs include the recently introduced I-Can course which is a project-based literacy and numeracy program, and Stomp and Life Online which teach life skills which help students to transition into all aspects of community life. “The courses have different activities aimed at students with different interests and abilities,” Ms Landreth said. The work education courses prepare students to enter the workforce with social and literacy skills. The I-Can group is for students who may have part-time jobs and improves their literacy and numeracy skills. They are also involved in project work, including preparing videos and magazines. The Stomp Group and Life Online courses are centred on life skills, creativity and outings. South West TAFE has about 35 students in its disability programs and provides support to students with disabilities studying other courses at South West TAFE. “We’re always looking at the programs to develop them to suit the needs of the clients,” Ms Landreth said. The orientation day activities will run from 1-6pm with enrolments from 1-1.30pm. The aim of the day is to get prospective students to experience TAFE, meet staff and current students and engage with activities. “We encourage parents and carers to attend and learn about the courses and the fun and learning that students can enjoy.”

remaining oil in frying pan over medium heat. Stir in leek and garlic for 3-4 minutes or until soft. Add mushroom, rice, quinoa and thyme. Stir to coat. Add 80ml (1/3 cup) of the stock to the rice mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until the liquid is absorbed. Add the stock, 80ml (1/3 cup) at a time, stirring constantly and allowing the liquid to be absorbed before adding more stock. Continue for 20 minutes, adding the peas halfway through cooking, until the liquid is absorbed and quinoa and rice are tender. Stir in the parmesan and season. Combine the rocket and lemon juice in a bowl. Divide the risotto among serving bowls and top with the rocket mixture.

NEW SIGNAGE FOR STURT STREET CARPARK TO FOCUS ON WATER The City of Mount Gambier is very pleased to announce the installation of three interpretive signs at the Sturt Street car park. The signs have been fitted in various locations around the car park and explain to the public the Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) elements used by Council staff to construct the car park. When the Sturt Street car park was constructed in 2009 it was constructed according to WSUD principles. WSUD is an approach to urban planning that mimics nature’s way of managing stormwater. Using various techniques, WSUD ensures that stormwater is collected and filtered before it enters our underground aquifer. This is very important as the Blue Lake is the major water supply for Mount Gambier. Apart from showcasing how environmentally sustainable techniques can be integrated into an urban project, the design improves the visual appearance of the car park and protects the underground aquifer that feeds the Blue Lake. As the City of Mount Gambier has a strong commitment to improving environmental sustainability, educating the community is a vital step towards achieving this goal. They have been installed to demonstrate to the community the various ways of maintaining and improving water quality and to encourage everyone to consider their role in conserving and protecting our underground aquifer and Blue Lake.

LOCAL Violence against women in the spotlight In 2012 Bonnie Stewart established the non-profit organisation With Love & Lipstick to raise awareness about violence against women and to give a voice to women suffering in an abusive relationship. In 2013 the campaign was launched in the South East and more than 150 boxes of love have been distributed each year to the women and children who are supported by the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service. The campaign started on August 1 and will run through until November 25 – White Ribbon Day. In Australia one in three women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime, it is time to break the silence. Last year the campaign received an overwhelming response from the local community and hopefully the community can replicate the same quantity of generous donations by November this year. “We are hoping people in the community will make a box of love, filled with the items listed below and donate it to
the Mount Gambier Public Library, National Tiles, Decor House or K&S Fuels Jubilee Highway,” local organiser Nicole Milosevic said. Walking trail closed for innovative rennovations
The Mount Schank walking trail will be upgraded using Mount Gambier limestone step planking, making it the first trail of its kind in South Australia to use this technique. The project is being facilitated by grants received from the Conservation Grants Program, Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife and the Friends of Mount Gambier Area Parks. A contractor has been engaged to install Mount Gambier limestone onto the existing area as well as realigning some areas to reduce the steep gradient of the trail. Step planking is an innovative technique that provides a gradual incline in a path rather than fixed step heights, allowing for easier walking by visitors of all ages with different stride lengths. It also allows for improved access to the area for staff to undertake weed control and trail maintenance. This unique method for developing walking trails has been extensively used in other states, by Parks Victoria and more recently in Tasmania. Natural Resources South East Lower South East District Manager Ross Anderson said that because the current steps are uneven and require some navigation, visitors are making their own pathway to the top of Mount Schank and not remaining on the existing trail. “These new paths are causing soil erosion and their uneven nature means that they are a slip and trip hazard for walkers,” Mr Anderson said. “Upgrading the trail will make for a much more pleasant walk to the top of Mount Schank. It will reduce the current maintenance requirements, ameliorate trip hazards and reduce the proliferation of bypass trails being developed by users.” The trail will be closed to the public until Monday, August 31, while the upgrade occurs. There will be restricted access to the toilets and no access to parking in the car park. The work is being completed during times of lower demand for use. Natural Resources South East apologises for any inconvenience caused during the upgrade.
LOCAL Choosing animals over humans Animals have been front and centre of Wendy Parish’s life since she was a child growing up on her parents’ dairy farm near Colac in south-west Victoria. Today, as a university student, animals still rule the roost. Wendy is in the second year of a Bachelor of Agriculture, majoring in production animal health at the University of Melbourne. On study breaks she’s home on the farm helping tend to the calves and feeding the cows. “I think I prefer working with animals,” Wendy said. “I’ve always been around animals…sometimes they’re easier to understand than humans.” Wendy hails from a large farm between Winchelsea and Dean’s Marsh which is home to a 500 strong Jersey dairy herd, along with a few hundred sheep plus some Angus beef cattle. She has her own Jersey stud and also a white Suffolk stud. The farm, originally her grandparents, is now run by her parents Lyn and David and her uncle Paul. One of five sisters, Wendy finds the farming lifestyle exhilarating. “We all enjoy it and help out on the farm where we can,” she said. “It’s a good family environment when you have to work together.” Following that old cliché about being able to take the girl out of the country, but not the country out of the girl, moving to Melbourne for study hasn’t diluted her love of the land. “I think I appreciate it more now,” she said. “I have to rent in Melbourne for uni but when I come home, the farm has clean, fresh air. There’s so much going on but it’s peaceful at the same time.” The farm has “a bit of everything,” although it’s dairy that remains Wendy’s favourite. “I prefer dairy, but I’m not a milker,” she admits. “I like helping in the calf shed. When I’m home from uni I like feeding the calves, rearing them and feeding the heifers out in the paddock,” she said. If she’s biased against doing the milking, she’s also biased towards Jerseys. “We’ve always had Jerseys and I’m a bit biased to them,” Wendy said. “They’re peaceful and calm and like to come up for a pat
and scratch. They’ll head butt you too, if you don’t scratch them.” This love of animals is something Wendy notices throughout the dairy industry and she supports the Legendairy communications initiative to raise the profile and reputation of the industry. “Most farmers look after their animals before they look after themselves. They go to their animals even before they have breakfast,” Wendy said. “Animals are the livelihood of farmers; you have to look after them to be producing money and your animals always come first.” This attitude helped her decision making when it came to further study, although her end point career still remains a mystery. “I knew I wanted to be in agriculture and I’ve always enjoyed animals and genetics, nutrition and the animal welfare side of things, but I still don’t really know where I want to be within the industry,” she said. Wendy recently completed a two-week industry placement at the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS), and while that was an enjoyable experience, it hasn’t made her choice any clearer. “There are so many more options that I didn’t even know existed before I went there. I might keep studying after my degree and go into research. It’s hard to decide…everything’s so interesting.” During her placement, Wendy went to the Victorian Winter Fair at Bendigo to speak to farmers about the new ADHIS Australian breeding indices. “They were all Holstein breeders up there so I had a few trying to convince me that Jersey cows are no good, but they didn’t change my mind,” she said. Despite their different breed preferences, the farmers were receptive to new ideas. “They were happy to talk to me about their experience and how they breed animals,” Wendy said. “The majority were positive and gave great advice and feedback. “Farmers want to learn new things to improve their system, which will improve their income and the welfare of their animals, so it’s good to get the research out to them. After all, your animals always come first.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY They’re so perky... by Robbie Tansel I’ve held my tongue for long enough now. I decided I was going to stay out of it. But I just can’t take it anymore. I’ve followed this story in the news over the last few weeks like the rest of you. The frustration has built. Here I am slaving away in my meaningless life. Meanwhile they’re travelling the world, making bucketloads of money, flying first class, staying in five star hotels and living the high life. I think we all know it’s a huge waste of money. They have the best of everything. They have staff rushing around to serve their every whim. It’s fair to say they’ve completely abused their privileges and perks as well, by the way. Then after it all they don’t even justify the wasted money with their performances. Fancy losing the Ashes while getting knocked over for only sixty runs in an innings?! Who did you think I was talking about? The politicians? I guess we could talk about that too. It’s not as serious an issue as the way the
Aussies capitulated in the cricket but it’s probably still worth a couple of hundred words. It started with that helicopter loving, former speaker of the house Bronwyn Bishop. Apparently she really likes flying around in helicopters. To be honest, with the quality of memes we all got to enjoy over the next couple of weeks on Facebook, I kind of think the helicopter trip was money well spent. How good was it spending a couple of days on Facebook not reading about what people had for lunch? The creativity Ms Bishop inspired was just her contribution to the creative arts. From there we have been blessed to see more of the pollies abuses of our tax payer money as they
have got the full value out of their expense accounts. On each occasion we are told that strictly speaking they are working within the rules. They’re not doing anything illegal. I’m still not at all convinced that makes it right. Essendon were apparently not breaking the rules but that doesn’t make it ethical. I heard Eddie McGuire interviewed on the Today show a week
or so ago indicating that he thinks we should be paying our representatives more because we want to get the best people into parliament. Fancy Mr McGuire who is normally so rational and sensible saying something so ridiculous. Who would have thunk it? His argument is that we want high flying businessmen and lawyers running our country because they’re the best qualified to do so. They’re so much smarter and more worthy than us commoners. Why would the highfliers go into parliament and take a pay cut? Sorry, Eddie, but I don’t want people in parliament who are wealthy, and only motivated by money. We’ve all seen how well that went with Clive Palmer. I want people representing me who actually understand how the majority of their constituents live and care about making their lives better. I want people who understand they are there as public servants, emphasis on servants. I want them to understand how hard I work for my money and keep that in mind when they decide to fly their children business class to some unnecessary event. I don’t really like the argument that they’re away from their family so much that they deserve to fly their families around. I’m happy for them to fly them somewhere but it is completely unnecessary
doing it first class or business class. If the time away from their family is going to be such an issue, maybe they need to consider whether they nominate in the first place. Again, just because there is money available to claim, doesn’t mean that ethically you should. You are able to leave some of your budget unspent and it can go back into the public purse to be spent on something that is actually necessary. Like paying someone to audit the expense account of every thieving politician in Canberra…and setting up the government department that will be in charge of issuing permits allowing citizens to have an opinion. Sorry Mr McGuire, but your mouth has been deemed too big a risk and you are not permitted to tell people what you are thinking. Back to the cricket because I think we all know that’s the big issue, fancy blaming the fact the WAGS are staying with their partners for losing the Ashes. I’m sure some of them were a distraction. It doesn’t matter where your wife is though, it’s going to be a distraction. If she’s back in Australia completely unsupervised with the credit cards, that’s going to provide a distraction too. Likewise, the mischief the players would get up to without their wife or girlfriend (or both) around is probably going to be quite a distraction too. They were just outplayed. Life goes on. Email me now at robbietansel@gmail. com if you want to join me in the revolution.

ADVERTORIAL Spring is on our doorstep With spring just around the corner and buds starting to burst it’s time to finish all those end of winter gardening jobs. All pruning of roses, deciduous trees and fruit trees will be well underway, if not finished, and it is important to make sure you have applied a winter spray of lime sulphur straight after pruning to clean up any overwintering pests and diseases. Also on the important list is copper sprays for stone fruit trees, such as peaches and nectarines, to avoid the attack of curly leaf. This is going to be more prevalent this year with the continuous rain and finding dry days to get sprays on is hard. All you can do is try your best. This season has seen the release of the new curly leaf free peaches and nectarines, so if you have been struggling for years to contain it now is the time to invest in an easy care tree. We currently have them $14.15 off their normal price in the sale. The time for planting dormant deciduous bare rooted trees and fruit trees is drawing to a close also. Stone fruit and almonds are bursting into life so this week should be the last opportunity to plant these from bare rooted trees. We have an end of winter clearance on these at only $19.95, along with a few other specials running on from the end of our huge tree sale. Potted specimens on the other hand can be planted all year round, so don’t panic too much if you haven’t got time. Now is also the time to be applying the first of the
seasons fertilisers and with all this lovely rain should be easily washed in. This should be applied around the drip line of mature trees and fruit trees and around 30cm out from the base of roses. We have been having fantastic results with a new rose fertiliser that came on to the market a few years ago. It is now available to the home gardener as it was used mainly by us professional growers in the past. It has higher amounts of potash, so important for disease prevention and colour and quantity of blooms plus being coated with iron which is an added bonus in our predominantly alkaline soils, should make your roses the glossiest they have ever been. Our staff are always eager to help with any enquiries you may have with regard to pruning roses and feeding as we own Limestone Coast Roses as well, so all staff are fully versed on roses. The deciduous magnolias are looking great at the moment around the region and bursting forth with their goblet shaped blooms on the bare branches. We have 25% off all of these in our sale including the sought after Black Tulip and denudata varieties and the new fairy magnolia also. The three new varieties released this winter; Genie, Cleopatra and Cameo have also been very popular with genie being a dwarf version of Black Tulip, so ideal for smaller gardens or pots. Come in for a look at their stunning display and grab a bargain at the same time.
Most of our bare rooted deciduous ornamental trees are selling out and as the they burst back in to life we will have to withdraw them from sale for potting on. We have clearance specials on the New ranges of dwarf fruit trees including blood plums, apricots, peaches and nectarines. In ornamental trees our mop top trees are all reduced with heavy reductions on Mop Robinia’s at two for $139.90 or $79.95 each, stocks are limited and at these prices they will sell fast. Weeping flowering cherries, silver birch, oak trees, lipstick maples, poplars….the list goes on are also heavily reduced (see advert adjacent page) so don’t leave planting too long, make the most of the great rain to settle everything in. In the Pot Shop there is a whole new range of goodies from
my recent buying trip starting to filter through. Unusual gardening orientated gifts, wall art, gardening tools and of course our fully insulated esky coolers in the shape of VW Kombi and and
Woody station wagon and of course the Truck (ideal for Fathers Day) and cast iron fire pits in several sizes, ideal anytime of the year to warm up the outdoor living areas and of course outdoor furniture from all corners of the globe. Some stunning new solid mahogany birdhouses and dovecotes in limited numbers are also available. Normally this is not the time of year we think about purchasing outdoor furniture but we have a few specials on benches, arches and table and chair settings to clear to make way for the new seasons stock coming through and at these prices you won’t want to miss out. Gardenarium is situated on Bay Road (Riddoch Hwy) 1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake roundabout. Or punch 167, Bay Road Mount Gambier into your GPS. See website for maps and details. Calum Haygarth

SOUTHERN LIFE TEASER Queen of thne jungle This is a snapshot of a feature story on this former local dancer from Southern Life - on sale now in all good newsagents... When Symiko De Van Der Schueren dreamed of a future on the stage she didn’t ever think she would be playing a giraffe, cheetah and a lioness all on one night. But after a phone call on May 1 this year she has been on the fast track to the Melbourne season of The Lion King and, for the former Mount Gambier dance, nothing rings truer at the moment than the Lion King anthem – Hakuna Matata. Symiko is yet another MJ Dance Studio alumni that has pursued her love of dance and started to carve a successful career. She debuted, as part of the dance ensemble, on Wednesday, June 17, after basically six weeks of relocating from Sydney to Melbourne and learning the vast array of numbers and performance guidelines that she has needed to literally step into the Melbourne cast as the newest face. Since leaving Mount Gambier, when her family opted to move to Queensland, Symiko has graduated from Dance Force Tweed Heads, completed a year of full time training at prestigious Sydney dance school Ev & Bow, and earned a place as a founding member of the Dream Dance Company, in their inaugural production Genesis. She also made the top 30 of the Australian series of So You Think You Can Dance – the series that saw fellow MJ dancer Sam Malseed advance deep into the reality TV competition. Symiko has won corporate gigs for such clients as the Commonwealth Bank and has danced up a storm

at a number of charity events, including School for Life. She even has Eurovision on her resume, having worked on a piece with Jacob Panzic. It was in September last year that Symiko auditioned for The Lion King and even then it was not the usual procedure. “It was an open call and I wasn’t set up with an agent at that time so basically just rocked up,” Symiko said. “I never received a an audition time which everyone else seemed to have but I knew the show and I knew it suited my style of dance and suited my look.” Symiko is already a realist when it comes to pursuing her dance career. Her distinct appearance means she’s just not suited to some roles. “So I went to the audition and there were heaps and heaps of girls,” Symiko said. It started with a dance call and then the first cut was made, followed by another bout of dancing and another cut. “We then had to do very specific dancing, using the characteristics we would need for the show,” she said. “There were a lot of stage leaps and cheetah work.” Symiko passed that phase of the process as well and before she knew it there was five girls left vying for the one vacant dance ensemble position.

LOCAL Gold for Mahalia at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards Mahalia Coffee is thrilled to announce their gold medal win with the popular Fair Trade Organic Yiragacheffe at this year’s Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards, for the Espresso 100% Single Origin Coffee category. Adding to the celebrations we also took home two silver and five bronze medals. This is the third year Mahalia Coffee has entered the award, and the first time walking away with a gold from this show. “We are so proud, and it’s a dream come true to win gold at this event,” CEO and Master Roaster Mahalia Layzell (pictured) said. “Tasmania is a food mecca, giving the award a great deal of weight in our industry. This is a sure vote of confidence in our product considering the tough competition.” The Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards is an exciting show to enter due to the “real foodie” feel, Tasmania’s own incredible produce, and the high standard of judging. Its prestige attracts entries from the top fine food businesses from all over Australia and the competition brutal. “Coming from the birthplace of coffee in Ethiopia, the Yiragacheffe is an amazing origin which is gaining in popularity with our customers, so I am particularly excited to win with such a unique bean,” Mahalia said. “It’s one of the more technically demanding to roast, due to the natural dry processing technique used after harvesting producing a non-uniform sized bean with wild earthy flavours. The roast process must be absolutely right in order to uncover its unique berry, apricot and citrus flavours.” Founded in 1999 by chefs Mahalia and her husband Paul Layzell, Mahalia Coffee is an epicurean roasting house specialising in the art of profile roasting. Dedicated to bringing quality, refinement and the exotic passion of faraway coffee lands to the lively world of
coffee connoisseurs. Mahalia’s multi-award winning coffee is distributed to more than 200 quality cafes, restaurants, providores and supermarkets Australia wide. Now in its 19th year, the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards aims to promote and encourage excellence in the Australian food industry by providing a quality benchmarking system that enables fine food producers to assess the quality of their products against their contemporaries and competitors. Other awards won were: Silver •Blend No.2 smooth and aromatic in the Espresso blend category. •Blend No.3 cafe creme in the Plunger Coffee blend category. Bronze •Fair Trade Organic East Timor in the Espresso 100% Single Origin Coffee category. •Decaf Natural Full Flavour in the Decaffeinated Coffee cappuccino category. •Blend No.2 smooth and aromatic in the Plunger Coffee blend category. •Blend No.4 European dark roast in the Cappuccino Classic International Style category. •Blend No.4 European dark roast in the Espresso blend category.

NETBALL Finals now set in Western Border netball West Gambier has clinched fourth spot in Western Border netball with a hard fought eight goal victory over South Gambier. On a day when South was celebrating its only A grade netball premiership – 1995 – the Demons started well but in the end were overrun by the Roos. The victory was built on the on court leadership of Lisa McGregor, who was critical in court play, as well as with her accurate finishing, as well as some tenacious defensive efforts from Maddy Teakle and Amy

Cram, who were just able to win enough possession to give the Roos the scoreboard edge. The opening quarter was a goal for goal contest, with the home side arguably having the edge in general play as Nicole Butler and Alyce Mourbey getting some important touches and making life tough for McGregor and Tahlia Earl, with Alyssa Boylan and Liza Mutch providing good options to link defence to offence and Olivia Dukalskis and Chantelle Weir finishing with good accuracy in a circle
the key feeders for their respective sides. Jordyn Adams entered the contest at wing defence at the main break and her work over the ball made life tough for Carlee Davey and she did disrupt some of the Roos forward attempts, but Davey still found the circle’s edge frequently and by three quarter time the Demons had still made no impact on the deficit. McGregor and Earl were part of a patient offence that was determined to make every opportunity count on the scoreboard and often that meant reworking the shooting position two and three times before taking the shot. Butler and Mourbey made life hard all day for the McGregor-Earl combination but the duo refused to get ruffled and finished with good accuracy. Just as she did against North Gambier the round before, Earl bobbed up in space just when the Roos needed an outlet and after a shaky start in the match thanks to the pressure of Butler over the shot, the youngster settled nicely and had a strong second half on the shooting front. cont. page 37

where they seemed to be able to easily find space. Teakle and Cram did tighten up from quarter time on and the one goal home side lead became a five goal half time lead for the visitors. McGregor and Earl also had a hand in the resurgence as they found better space in the shooting circle and also finished with good accuracy. The battle between centres Alyssa Boylan and Carly Trevilyan was intriguing and basically a nil-all draw in the first half as both worked hard both ways. They were rarely far from each other’s side as often had to abort their preferred long drives to work back to the ball carrier in what was a tight defensive tussle across the court all day. The respective wing attacks were both made to work hard but Liza Mutch and Carlee Davey both got better and better as the game wore on and were lifestyle1.net | 34

Local Sport NETBALL Finals now set in Western Border netball from page 34 Last time these two sides met, South came from the clouds to steal the one goal victory and the Roos were clearly aware and refused to concede, never really allowing the Demons to get close enough to believe in the final stanza. Mourbey was forced from the court in the final three minutes and the match petered out from there as both sides accepted the realisation the battle for fourth was over. McGregor was a standout for the Roos, despite the fact that Mourbey was impressive herself, taking some wonderful trademark interceptions, while Teakle and Cram got some important touches, with Teakle recovering from a slow first quarter to have an intriguing battle with Dukalskis, who was one of the Demons’ best. Boylan was also impressive for the Demons with her workrate and on court leadership. East Gambier also made it a fait accompli for a second place finish with a 14 goal win over Casterton Sandford. Missing key circle defenders Eilish and Brenna McKay, the Bulldogs were ably
served by Rachael Hines and Morgan Amy. The player unavailability also gave Casey Horrigan her first A Grade berth this season, starting the first quarter at wing defence. The Cats, on the other hand, were boosted by the return of a familiar face – Shanae Guthrie – who took the wing defence bib and was named in the Cats’ best. Guthrie has rarely set foot on a netball court in recent times, focussing on her studies, but her athleticism and ability to read the play was a welcome addition to the personnel challenged Cats. Guthrie’s game was also critical as she was matched on one of East’s most influential players of 2015, Tarsh McCallum, and she was able to quell the influence of the pacy wing attack. Hines is no stranger to the defensive circle and she made herself at home from the opening quarter, winning back possession for the Bulldogs in spectacular fashion. She was matched on dominant Cats goaler Madalene Cleary and it was a fascinating duel, highlighted by the athletic interceptions of Hines but Cleary still emerged as a critical player for the contest.
The two sides were locked at 10-apiece at the first change, with the accurate finishing from Sarah Lock and Tenille Gray, who converted 10 from 11 as a combination, again pivotal. The changes came for the Bulldogs at that first break. With Lauren Harvey backing up her strong performance in A Reserve by taking the centre bib and Cindy Itzerott moving to the defensive wing. It was the defensive intensity of the Bulldogs that lifted in the second quarter, with hands pressure over the ball a key factor in unsettling the Cats. At the other end, the trademark long drives of Lock to open up space for Gray, and the Bulldogs were able to return to the game style they favour, turning that tied away scoreline into an eight goal half time margin. Gray and Lock shot 16 from 19 in the quarter and once the young Bulldogs gain ascendancy they rarely relinquish it. The Cats re-jigged their defensive line-up at the main break, with Abbey Shannon and Tayla Guthrie returning to their more familiar roles with Guthrie at the post and the home side
certainly picked up from its second quarter lapse and stayed with the second ranked Bulldogs, losing the quarter by four to trail by 12 at the final change. Coach Trictia Cleary really swung the changes in the final quarter, moving Shanae Guthrie to the shooting circle, where she last had an impact for the Cats, and also rearranged her mid court and the changes again improved Casterton Sandford’s performance, going down by only two goals in the final term to suffer a 14 goal loss. The combination of Natalie Rhook in centre and Cleary to wing defence saw the Cats create some turnovers, while Gaby Tomkins, who was the Cats’ best, continued her hard running game when moved to the attacking wing. Harvey continued to be a strong link player for the Bulldogs and her connection with Gray and Lock was impressive, given she is not a regular member of the line-up. Gray and Hines were East’s best as the undermanned Bulldogs locked away second spot, while Tomkins and Shanae Guthrie were best for the home side. While no side is happy with a 20 goal loss, North’s performance against Millicent was an improvement on its round 14 effort against West Gambier. The game opened up as a goal for goal contest and it was only late passing errors from the Tigers that saw the margin blow out to five in favour of the Saints by quarter time. It is the reigning premiers’ modus operandi – soaking up the early pressure and then punishing teams for errors and putting space between themselves and their opponent in the blink of an eye. The game also followed North’s season pattern – the defenders creating
a number of turnovers and those opportunities being coughed up in transition. Alannah Campbell, Kaitlin Smith and Melissa Renko certainly didn’t allow the Saints’ forward line have things their own way but in the end, the Saints were patient and an opening half scoreboard that saw Donna Denton convert 23 from 24 and ensure every time Millicent had possession it ended up counting. Denton also had a wonderful support act in Keah Lynch, who moved well and worked hard to help open up space to give her feeders a clear option for the delivery. Of course, as is so often the case, the defensive efforts of the Saints started to take its toll as Hayley Dunn and Alex Walker started to make life really tough for Bailey Watson and Abbey Duncan. And Kimmi Varcoe was also
adding to that pressure with her tight marking efforts at wing defence and ability to read the play and get important interceptions and by the main break, the Saints had really put the foot down and set up a 13 goal half time advantage. Danika Jolley entered the clash, replacing Lynch in the shooting circle, and the Saints barely missed a beat. The hard working Tigers defenders certainly continued to work hard and created some turnovers, but Varcoe, Dunn and Walker were able to return in kind and the Saints extended their lead to 17 by the final change. The Tigers were impressive in the final quarter and lead it for the vast majority but in the end, the Saints again were able to lift to another gear and it was a 20 goal loss by the final whistle. Lisa Duldig
and Ash Kalantarian , while playing on each other, were standouts for their respective clubs, while Varcoe’s defensive efforts saw her among the Saints’ best. Fellow wing defender Renko was named in the Tigers’ best – her North team mates now having to settle for a place in the elimination first semi final.

Olivia Dukalskis • 100 Games - junior & senior games Olivia celebrated her 100th game for the South Gambier Football Club in style, earning the club award for both her 17 & under game & A Grade. A multiple association best & fairest and club best & fairest, as well as Western Border representative, Olivia is the ultimate utility, having as much influence as a circle defender as she does in the shooting circle. She is also a competent midcourter. Olivia was a SAPSASA State representative and is set to head off to the Under 15 Schoolgrils National Netball Championsips next week as part of the South Australian team, where she has been selected as a goaler.
Above (left)- Olivia Dukalskis with her parents Megan and Kevin Dukalskis, brother Sam, and her grandparents. Her grandmother was a former vice captain at South Gambier.
Katie Torney • 100 Games - junior & senior games A gutsy defender who always gives 110 percent, Katie was a member of the South Gambier 2014 C Grade premiership side and has become an integral part of this year’s B Grade line-up. Katie’s enthusiasm for the game is infectious and she is also a willing volunteer around the club. Despite missing the last few games last season, Katie also secured a top five finish in the association best & fairest.
1995 PREMIERSHIP REUNION
Above (centre) - Katie with her parents Craig & Jenny Torney. Lorelie Ellis • 200 Games - junior & senior games Lorelie is continuing on from her good form in 2014 when she won the association best & fairest, was a key member of the club’s C Grade premiership and is a key part of the 2015 Demons C Grade line-up. A willing volunteer and a reliable player, Lorelie also always gets the job done in the glamour stakes at club events.

South Gambier has only secured one A Grade Western Border netball title and the club celebrated that achievement at the weekend. Premiership coach Belinda Blake (Healey) returned to head up the celebrations, which were also attended by club life members and sponsors.
