are prepared to go in order to ensure the satisfaction of their clients. “There are a number of major advantages in dealing with Green Triangle Electronics,” Sales Manager Shayne Hosking said. “The trend of the digital world is very much about convergence of IT and telecommunications. “So to be able to truly understand and harness this, it is imperative that we understand the IT fundamentals. “As one of the very few true IT & telecommunication based companies we can offer the customer the confidence of knowing that we will provide them with the best solution for their needs. “We adhere to a philosophy of the Right Device, Advice & Price, which means we will provide you with the most appropriate options both in terms of functionality and financially. “It is also imperative that you know the local area – as the infrastructure we deal with can be very different to say a business in Adelaide. “While the world is very much embracing the online world with things such as Microsoft Office 365 and many other cloud based products, in some situations the most appropriate option is an on premise solution – it is very much horses for courses.” Green Triangle Electronics is a truly one stop shop when it comes to Telecommunications and IT provisioning. They have the capability to offer the diverse range of Telstra offerings, coupled with locally based technicians

to provide the ever important installation and support aspects. “Another major advantage of dealing with us is that we are always available to discuss your particular requirements, and if things don’t meet with your expectations, we will do everything we can to remedy it – you will be talking to the same people each time,” Mr Hosking concluded.

LOCAL John Riddoch remembered for historic Coonawarra milestone

LOCAL Founder’s legacy alive and well across the region

This Friday will likely seem like any other cool, winter’s day this year, except for one significant detail. It will mark exactly 125 years since John Riddoch sold off the first blocks of his vast pastoral landholding that would eventually grow to become the Coonawarra wine region as we know it today. Coonawarra’s premium wine region status owes much to the remarkable vision, drive and commitment of Riddoch to establish a Fruit Colony, among many other achievements, says greatgrandson and local historian Peter Rymill. “Like most great men (he was) a very complex character,” Mr Rymill said. “He built up a huge property (now Yallum Park) on the one-hand, but on the other, subdivided it when he could. He was a hard-headed businessman, yet he was a soft touch for Adam Lindsay Gordon on the many occasions he needed to borrow money.” Riddoch’s story is a classic rags to riches tale. Born in Scotland in 1827, Riddoch was listed as a brickmaker when he arrived in Australia as a 24 year old seeking his fortunes in the Victorian goldfields, like so many other young men. “He was dirt poor when he arrived, but he was keen and full of ambition to succeed in what he saw as a land of opportunity”, said Mr Rymill. And succeed he did; initially as a trader and gold buyer, then grocer and wine merchant in Geelong in the 1850s. By the time he was 34 years old he’d purchased Yallum, and over the ensuing years, would eventually become a pastoralist, an active parliamentarian, and philanthropist of the arts and education. “He was open to good ideas - especially any that would support the betterment of his local community, whether that was Coonawarra, Penola or the greater south east of the State,” Mr Rymill said. “He seemed a thoroughly dependable, honourable man who would deliver on his word.” Riddoch’s land holdings extended from the present Mount Gambier airport in the south, to Coonawarra

John Riddoch’s legacy can be seen across many parts of Coonawarra 125 years after the first Coonawarra Fruit Colony blocks of land were sold in 1890. He had seen first-hand how good the combination of red soil and climate were in Penola for growing fruits and vines, compared to those in his orchard at Yallum, and it was one of the motivating factors to sell off blocks of land to help spur the local economy. “It’s remarkable to learn that not only are some wineries continuing to nurture small pockets of those original vineyards, but they are producing some very sought after premium wines off them as well,” said Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated wine industry officer Cathy Hughes. Brand’s Laira have an old Shiraz block planted in 1893 in front of their winery, which makes the single vineyard Stentiford’s Old Vine Shiraz, named in honour of Captain Stentiford who obtained this block in 1894. This block passed through various hands before coming under the stewardship of Eric Brand and his family in 1952 (now part of McWilliams Wines). Another of the existing original vineyards was planted by William Rothwell “Rothie” Pounsett and his wife Sarah, who settled on 20 acres of land which they named “Undoolya”* in 1890. Wynns Coonawarra Estate today nurture Pounsett’s one hectare, 1894 planted, Undoolya Shiraz Vineyard, which can be found just north of Chardonnay Lodge on Riddoch Highway. The first vintage of Coonawarra wine was produced in Riddoch’s nursery shed in 1895. The second vintage was made in the Katnook woolshed, in what is now a part of Katnook Estate, where the imposing building still stands. A purpose built, triple-gabled stone winery was in place ready for the third vintage in 1897, which also still stands proudly at the heart of Wynns Coonawarra Estate. “These are lovely buildings that have stood the test of time, and their history and ambience continue to be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike,” said Ms Hughes. However, Riddoch’s legacy stretches beyond the vineyards and wineries of Coonawarra, and the stunning Yallum Park mansion, with communities across the south east region still benefitting from his parliamentary and philanthropic endeavours. Local historian Peter Rymill said that it was Riddoch’s drive and commitment to improve the region that enabled him to secure large grants from the government from 1865 - when he entered parliament. “He achieved his aims for the district, obtaining large grants for roads, for the inception of country railways, and for the first hospital in Mount Gambier, and the Old Court House and Gaol, as well as the Mount Gambier Institute, and an Art Gallery – renamed the Riddoch Art Gallery in 1994.” At a more local level, the Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre is housed in what was formerly the Mechanics Institute, which was originally built thanks to a £300 grant Riddoch secured (as he did for Robe as well). It is now known as the John Riddoch Centre. “He was very committed to the ideals of adult education, and he saw these Institutes as a way of benefiting individuals and regions,” said Mr Rymill.

in the north, and Glencoe in the west. It seems that Riddoch first mooted the idea of a Fruit Colony in the mid-1860s, but it would take him nearly 30 years to bring it to fruition. Peter Rymill said that in an address Riddoch made to the local Agricultural Bureau Penola Branch in April 1890, he reflected on several key factors that would lead to the establishment of the Coonawarra Fruit Colony three months later. “He certainly recognised that the soil and climate were very favourable for vine and fruit growing, and the markets seemed limitless, with good prices on offer,” said Mr Rymill. “But it was also his desire to help others, and to give the men of the district employment and a future ‘for the prosperity of the country’ as he said at the time, that was at the core of his plan to sell off blocks of Yallum.” And finally, it was the introduction of the railways - of which he was able to directly influence the government of the day to build, that made it all viable.”

GETTING YOUNG PEOPLE INTO WORK South West TAFE will help people get back to work with a new $3.6 million project that also gives small businesses access to the types of employees they need. Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert today announced $1.6million funding from the State Government’s Back to Work fund for the project. The funding will allow South West TAFE to train about 60 additional young people per year over the next five years and help to address the region’s high rate of youth unemployment. The project involves building a network of trainee employers and will help employers to get the best from young people in training. South West TAFE Chief Executive Officer Mark Fidge said the project would provide accessible introductory training for unemployed young people and support students in their transition from school to training and into work. “It will promote collaboration and engagement between employees and employers,” he said. Mr Fidge said the program would initially focus on skills needed for office work and customer service but would expand into other areas. “Small businesses report that they can’t find suitable administration, customer liaison and front desk staff,” Mr Fidge said. “This program will deliver that and then expand into new areas such as personal services where there is a similar skills shortage.” The ongoing program will reflect regional employment needs and could expand into hospitality, new energy technology, transport, primary health, and community services. The project also has the potential to be rolled out across Victoria. “We will establish an evaluation system to follow students and employers and report on outcomes so it can be tested and expanded in other areas,” Mr Fidge said. South-west Victoria’s youth unemployment stands at 18.8 per cent according to the latest Victorian Council of Social Services figures and Mr Fidge said this type of project could reverse the trend. “Like many Victorian regions we have a serious youth unemployment problem and need to find innovative ways to help young people find a pathway into a job while also giving employers a positive experience from taking on trainees.”

LOCAL Stopping at the Bucks Julie and Bruce Buck might have moved off the land but a memento of their dairy farming life has stayed with them and become something of an accidental tourist attraction. The unique, chainsaw-carved treetrunk letter box in the shape of a farmer and his cow takes pride of place outside their new home on the Princes Highway in Panmure, southwest Victoria It’s even become an attraction for passing motorists in one of Australia’s heartland dairy regions. “We often see a car stop out the front and someone hop out and take a photo, then off they go again,” Julie said. There’s just one drawback – the carving doesn’t get used for its original purpose. “It was made as a mailbox, but we don’t have mail delivered out here,” Julie said. Still, the Bucks don’t mind having their unusual and unused mailbox in the spotlight. “Being on the highway more people see it now. Not a lot of people saw it on the farm, though the odd person stopped for a photo,” Julie said. The Bucks bought the chainsaw carving about five years ago at the Noorat Show after Julie watched the artist at work from a nearby food van that she was manning for the day. “I thought; fancy putting a chainsaw artist next to a food van with all the dust and noise,” Julie said. Then she saw his

work. “I loved it,” Julie said. “Being a dairy farmer, I loved the image of the cow. It’s certainly an attraction now. I hope it reminds people about the dairy industry.” Just like the carving that moved with them, the Bucks have also found it too hard to give up farming completely. Julie and Bruce leased their Laang farm about 18 months ago and moved to Panmure, but they keep a close interest in the dairy industry and run young stock on a 40 hectare block. “We wanted a change but Bruce didn’t want to sell the farm so we leased it,” Julie said. “Leasing is like letting go without letting go. It’s always there if we feel the need to go back.” The oversized letterbox is also always there as a constant reminder of their active farming days. “It was part of the farm that we couldn’t let go,” Julie said. Julie was on the farm for 18 years while Bruce grew up on the family property. Both are strong supporters of dairy and the Legendairy

communications initiative to raise the profile and reputation of the industry. “The dairy industry has been good to us and I’m really pleased if our letterbox gets people thinking and talking about the industry,” Julie said.

HEALTH CAREER OPPORTUNITIES EXPAND A new project to create new educational pathways into health careers has created opportunities for more than 270 people in south-west Victoria. The Great South Coast Health Articulation Pathways project at South West TAFE almost doubled its 150 enrolment target by attracting 272 students. It also succeeded in taking opportunities to smaller regional communities, with more than half of those involved coming from the Glenelg and Southern Grampians shires. The two year pilot project has laid the foundation for more health-related courses to be developed. The success of the project is being celebrated and its outcomes were released at the end of the South West Victorian Primary Health Care and Community Services Forum at South West TAFE last week. South West TAFE Executive Manager Student and Industry Engagement Jenny Madden said the outcomes were very positive but just the start of changes in the delivery of courses in health and community services in the region. “We’ve got courses on scope and now have to work with local industry to develop the resources for those courses,” Ms Madden said. The new enrolments were achieved by introducing a range of subjects and courses that provide pathways in health, especially in allied health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, mental health and alcohol and other drugs. The project was instrumental in the development and promotion of a number of courses, including VCE VET Health, Certificates III and IV Allied Health, Aboriginal Health, remedial massage and Head Start into Health. The project also initiated the development of a Certificate II in Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, an initiative supported by local Aboriginal health organisations. Project manager Paul Atack said the positive outcomes supported many government initiatives, such as the Department of Health’s `Growing Your Assistant’ workforce program. Mr Atack added that the pathways project had supported the delivery of courses using different, blended and flexible delivery methods to suit students and employers and to develop articulated pathways. It has also reached into more remote parts of the region. “Most of the numbers involved have been in the Glenelg and Southern Grampians shires, which was very pleasing,” he said.

Holocaust exhibition in Portland From this Wednesday until the August 19, the Portland Arts Centre will present a unique and significant touring exhibition called Courage to Care. Developed and delivered by volunteers including Holocaust survivors, Courage to Care is an exhibition and educational program that challenges its visitors on their attitudes to prejudice, discrimination and racism. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Robert Halliday said Council is pleased to be hosting such a significant exhibition. “We welcome the hundreds of secondary-aged school students and members of the public from around the south west who will visit the Portland Arts Centre over the coming weeks,” Cr Halliday said. “With its message of standing up and taking action against bullying and prejudice we believe this exhibition will take a lead role in encouraging people in our community to be upstanders, not bystanders.” Since 1994, more than 85,000 Victorian students have participated in this award-winning program. Organisers have already booked hundreds of secondary school students from around the south west to attend the exhibition during its three-week display. The exhibition will be officially opened by Cr Halliday on Wednesday at 5.30pm at the Portland Arts Centre. Keynote speaker at the event will be member for South West Victoria, the Hon Denis Napthine. A presentation of a Local Hero Award will also be made to Kate Halstead (pictured) in recognition of her work in Nepal after the devastating earthquakes earlier this year. Those interested in attending the opening are asked to contact the Portland Arts Centre on (03)5522 2263. The exhibition will be open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and weekends 1-4pm until Wednesday, August 19. Free admission. Courage to Care is an initiative of B’nai B’rith, a not for profit Jewish community organisation. It is supported by the Victorian Department of Education and Training and the Victorian Multicultural commission.

LOCAL Tapping into Glenelg Shire tourist trade Learning how to take advantage of visitor influxes from events, festivals and cruise ship visits will be the focus of a special event being held as part of the Small Business Festival in August. The event – entitled Maximising Business Through Visitors to the Glenelg Shire – aims to help local enterprises take advantage of the influx of visitors who come with events like the Wood, Wine and Roses Festival, tuna runs, the Casterton Kelpie Festival, fun runs and drag races held in the area, and cruise ship visits to Portland. Maximising Business Through Visitors to the Glenelg Shire will be staged on Friday 28th August from 6pm at the Portland Performing Arts Centre, and will be presented by marketing dynamo Ailsa Page from AP Marketing Works. The cocktail-style event will include nibbles and drinks with local produce, a panel discussion with question time, information stalls and static displays, as well as live music. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Robert Halliday said the region was increasingly becoming a festival and event destination, which afforded local business owners with a fantastic opportunity. “Glenelg’s events, festivals and attractions entice thousands of visitors to the region each year and we want to help our local businesses take full advantage of that,” Cr Halliday said. “If you are a business looking to find more customers and make more money, then this event is not to be missed. You’ll learn what you can do to attract more business from these visitors, pick up on latest social media ideas and meet other business people and share ideas.” Cr Halliday said this was the first time Glenelg Shire Council has been involved in the State Government’s Small Business Festival, which is held by Small Business Victoria throughout August every year. Ms Page said her presentation would give participants simple and easily implemented strategies to attract

business from tourists. “My presentation will show business operators how they can make an impact on visitors so they’ve got a much greater chance of nabbing their business and encourage repeat business,” she said. “Everything I talk about is easy to implement – you won’t need a huge budget or heaps of marketing tools and knowledge. It’s all designed to be very practical.” Ms Page, who often visits the south west coast as a tourist herself, said she will offer marketing advice from a fresh perspective. “I will bring a fresh eye, as well as a comparative eye, as I travel all over Victoria so I see what other towns and businesses do to attract visitor spending. And these are places that don’t have as much to offer as Glenelg Shire. “The people who come along to this event are going to get excited about their region. Getting together and sharing advice and knowledge can really reignite your passion for your region.” Tickets to the event are $20 each and are on sale now at www.glenelg.vic.gov. au/ticketing For more information contact Grants and Project Officer Amy Hoggan on (03)5522 2326 or email ahoggan@glenelg.vic.gov.au

COLLECTED STUPIDITY My Mick Fanning Moment... by Robbie Tansel I want you to know that as with every week, everything I will be sharing this week is the truth. I’m not just making this story up to cash in on Mick Fanning’s recent

very public encounter with a shark. I had my very own Mick Fanning moment. It wasn’t a shark, but it was an animal with a very similar level of viciousness. Here goes. I was out for my morning torture session…I mean healthy jog. It was dark which is normally the case at twenty past six in the morning in the middle of July. I was only five minutes into my morning jog. At this point of the journey I am normally at the point where I am thinking about what would happen if I was abducted whilst jogging. They may do something unpleasant to me, but on the other hand at least they’d probably put me in a car so I wouldn’t have to jog anymore. I guess I’m saying that it wouldn’t all be bad. Anyway as I was fantasising about being

kidnapped a dark shape leapt out of the shadows. It came from nowhere and scared me quite a bit. My first thought was, what on earth was this creature that was moving quickly enough to keep up with me, white Usain Bolt? he barking and nipping at my ankles removed all doubt that this was a vicious dog. As with Mick Fanning, my natural instincts kicked in immediately and my brain went into auto-pilot mode. It was only as I looked down on the snarling, barking face at the base of the tree I rapidly scaled, that I realised how close I’d come to being licked to death by a particularly aggressive Shih Tzu. I’m sure Mick Fanning’s life flashed before his eyes as he desperately fought off the ocean predator, and I know there were visions from my life flashing before mine. I’ve got a feeling that Fanning’s didn’t give him a feeling of disappointment and depression. It’s in these kind of moments where I realise how poorly I’ve used my years. When the vicious little mongrel got sick of sitting at the base of the tree and returned to licking his goolies, I descended the tree and returned to my jog. I’d like to think that this near death experience was the start of an all new Robbie Tansel but… I couldn’t help continuing with my hypercritical mindset. What was some irresponsible owner doing leaving such a vicious beast on the loose? As if I don’t have enough problems simply trying to stagger my five kilometres and return to my castle still breathing, I now have to contend with this. It’s been bad enough having to contend with the other dog hazard you’ll encounter on the paths of Mount Gambier. That’s the little brown ones they leave laying on the ground. Obviously the message to pick up after your dog is not working. With this in mind, I’d like to ask that if the dog walkers of Mount Gambier can’t pick it up, could they at least select appropriate places to get the dogs to do their business ie not on the dam path I’m running on. Might I suggest out the front of parliament house or in the office of any parliamentarian who decides that travelling an hour in a limousine is undignified and cutting it back to 15 minutes in a helicopter would be much more suitable, screw the expense. How about Bernard Tomic’s house? He’s so full of crap he probably wouldn’t notice. Anyway, having looked the grim reaper in the eyes, this is the start of an all new Robbie Tansel. If you have some sort of dog repelling spray I could borrow, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Age no barrier to the Ageless Arts Exhibition An innovative artstechnology program between 8 and 9-year-olds and senior residents has created some amazing results – and not just the art work. The Ageless Arts program run by Glenelg Libraries used iPads and art apps to forge new relationships between Glenelg’s elderly residents and primary school students, with an exhibition of their work launched last week. Glenelg Mayor Cr Robert Halliday said blending the arts and technology has provided a unique opportunity to forge strong links between Grade 2 and 3 Portland South Primary School students and senior residents. The program, supported through funding from the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), has involved using digital devices and media applications to create art, music, games and photos as a means of promoting social connection and technology knowhow for seniors. Cr Halliday said the program exceeded all expectations, though art was not always the end result. “The seniors – who ranged in age from their 60s to their 90s – had never used an iPad before and felt the technology was beyond them,” Cr Halliday said. “Six weeks later, those same seniors couldn’t wait to get their hands on the iPads and integrate their use into their daily lives thanks to the young people who helped them learn how to use them.” The Ageless Arts program was backed by the MAV and the Department of Health and Human Services. The Ageless Arts Exhibition featuring photos, images, video and text will run in the Community Meeting Room until mid August.

LOCAL Youth program extends to primary school students

The Finding my Place program has been running for eight years with high school students ranging from Year 8 to 11. This year the Mount Gambier Library is excited to be closely working with primary schools for the first time as a pilot program. Feedback from teachers, presenters and often team members sparked the idea of starting the program for younger students, which will include Years 6 and 7. In comparison to the high school program, it will not be that much different but perhaps a bit more toned down in a way they will be able to understand and benefit from. They will still be focusing on all the same things, such as guidance and assistance in building self esteem, careers, healthy lifestyles and learning life skills, But throughout this there will be more activities included and it will not be as intensely career driven. The coordinator of the Finding my Place program is Teresa Nearmy, a staff member at the Mount Gambier Library, who is very passionate about helping the youth. The aim of the program is to show students how exciting learning can be, as well as finding your identity, understanding your emotions, what makes you tick and learning

Business advice on wheels returns to region The Small Business Bus is visiting Glenelg Shire again, the second time in three weeks. The Small Business Bus is a State Government initiative and is visiting Portland on Thursday August 6 as part of the Small Business Festival, which runs throughout August. The Bus provides free advice, support and mentoring to business owners across the state, so if you’re thinking about starting a small business or want to develop your existing business, the bus is a fantastic resource. Glenelg Mayor Cr Robert Halliday said the Bus visited Casterton on July 20 and its visit to Portland would be another fantastic opportunity for local business owners and operators to take advantage of specialist advice without a charge attached. “The Small Business Bus offers free mentoring throughout the day with an experienced business professional who can assist you in taking your small business to the next level,” Cr Halliday said. “Glenelg business owners will also find information on the programs and services the State Government’s Small Business Victoria provides, as well as tools and tips to help you start or grow your business.” The Small Business Bus will be in Portland on August 6 from 10am to 4pm outside 55 Percy Street in front of the grassed area. LOCAL A local experience for international volunteers International student volunteers from North America recently joined forces with local community groups and Natural Resources South East to undertake significant environmental projects across the South East in July. The International Student Volunteer (ISV) program assisted with a variety of NRSE projects aimed at protecting the South East biodiversity, coastline and habitat. The ISV team continued work initiated by local volunteers, landholders, schools and community groups, while also building on the success of work undertaken by three other ISV teams that have visited the region since 2011. Natural Resources South East Senior Coast and Marine Officer Raelene Mibus says she was excited about having people travel from the other side of the world to volunteer their summer holidays to help make a difference in the South East. “It is not just about on-ground outcomes, it is about volunteers both local and international working together to gain invaluable learning experiences,” Ms Mibus said. “The crew worked inland for one week to complete a major revegetation project in the Frances area which is part of the Australian Government funded Landscape Links project. In total 16,000 seedlings were planted.” In the second week, the group of eight volunteers and their Australian team

leader travelled to Robe to work on a range of coastal projects through the Limestone Coastwatchers Program. This partnership, funded by the Australian Government, is a collaborative project between the Limestone Coast Local Government Association and Natural Resources South East and undertakes action to tackle a broad range of issues that threaten the natural and cultural values of our coastal and marine environments. Natural Resources South East staff worked together with the ISV and local volunteers to undertake activities such as removing invasive weeds and garden escapees including polygala and coastal tea tree from coastal reserves and planting coastal vegetation. Ms Mibus encourages locals to get involved with local community environmental projects. “There are a number of local groups and events across the region that provide the opportunity to be involved in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, see your local area in a different way, learn new skills and meet others who volunteer their time to help manage sites that benefit the wider community.” People interested in volunteering alongside ISV teams, or for more information about volunteering with a community environment group, contact Natural Resources South East (08)8735 1177. Mount Gambier Golf Club hosted the 71st Country Week Golf SA Ladies Silver meeting at Attamurra last week. Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee officially opened the event at a wine and cheese tasting and information night last Monday. The City of Mount Gambier and Mount Gambier Community Bendigo Bank were the major sponsors together with Banks Thargo, Patrick and Di Giorgio wineries in Coonawarra, supporting daily events. Craig Davis, the Mount Gambier Golf Club professional, sponsored the veterans events and was a great support throughout the whole tournament. Kimberly Clark Australia, Peter Jennings Pumps, accommodation, hospitality and retail businesses in Mount Gambier also assisted with sponsorship. Seventy-eight ladies with GA handicaps in the range of 0-16.0 took on the challenging Attamurra golf course over three days with 36 holes played on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by the foursomes on Thursday. Strong, bitterly cold northerly winds on Tuesday made conditions difficult and higher than usual scores prevailed, however scores generally did improve as did the weather on Wednesday and Thursday with the course bathed in sunshine. Deb Percey, from the Kooyonga Golf Club, won the Silver Salver for 2015, with a combined score of 174 for 36 holes from Lana Barlow, from the Millicent Golf Club, three shots further back with 177 on a countback from Jodie Deacon and Julie Oldfield. The best nett aggregate over 36 holes was won by Janet Nottle, from the Bordertown Golf Club. In the Veterans’ event, the Millicent Golf Club were well represented in the placings with Lana Barlow winning the best gross aggregate over 36 holes with 177 and Kirsty Bailey winning the handicap event with a total of 159 nett. Mount Gambier players, Julie Oldfield and Kerry Pedlar, performed well on one of the days but were unable to continue their good form for the 36 hole event. The presentation of trophies for the 36 holes events were made in the clubhouse on Wednesday evening after a three delicious three course meal provided by Vanessa Berzel and Graeme Armstrong. Two teams, metropolitan and country with 12 members in each were randomly selected from all the players prior to hit off and after two days’ golf, metropolitan with a total score of 1040 defeated country 1051. Thirty-nine pairs played a foursome on Thursday in ideal conditions and the winners were Julie Baird, from Thaxted Park, and Lana Barlow, from Millicent, who scored 91 off the stick to win the gross, while the winners of the handicap event were Sally Graham and Karen Brien, from Blackwood, with a score of nett 74.5. Club captain Marie Douglas said it was a very successful Silver event with everything running smoothly due to the many hours of preparation from many of the members “Particular lady chairperson Di O’Donnell, who assisted me in coordinating the event,” Douglas said. “The course was in an excellent condition for the three day event and was highly rated by many of our visitors due to the course staff and team of volunteers who worked tirelessly to have the course in top condition for the middle of July. “It was rewarding to receive good feedback from the visitors who not only enjoyed the golf but also the hospitality from local people including many of the accommodation places, restaurants and shops in our area who would have profited from holding such an event in our district.”

Top right - West’s Michelle Clarke maintains control in the sodden conditions. Toni Sims celebrated her 350th game for the South Gambier Netball Club on Saturday, adding another incredible chapter to her impressive resume. She is the first South Gambier player to reach the 350 mark and with a swag of individual honours, most recently the 2014 Western Border Netball Association A Reserve best & fairest, at both association and club level. A life member of her beloved Demons, Toni is the epitome of the player you want in involved at your club. She has worked hard to get the best out of her ability and even this season took the court in the A Grade and again held her own thanks to her impeccable timing on the move and her outstanding court craft and netball smarts. Toni has also been a long standing member of the netball committee, always puts her hand up to volunteer at fundraisers and other club duties and she is currently the club treasurer.

RISING STAR HITS THE 100 GAME MARK Felicity Clayton celebrated her 100th game for South Gambier at the weekend. The talented utility, who has also played extensive representative netball, is currently a key player in the club’s 17 & under team, despite still being eligible for 15 & under competition. She has also played senior netball for A Reserve & B Grade. Felicity was part of the 2013 13 & under South Gambier team that won the Western Border premiership and is equally talented at both ends of the court. She has also accrued quite a few individual honours at both association and club level. Felicity is also training to be an umpire.

Tash Hemmings-Dunn celebrated her 250th appearance for South Gambier on Saturday, sharing the limelight with her good friend and long time team mate Toni Sims, who celebrated her 350th game. Tash is arguably one of the most consistent performers the club has ever seen, with her ability to hold down the least glamorous and toughest gig in netball - wing defence. Tash has built her career on working hard to deny her opponent possession and has always been a key transition player in offence. She also had an outstanding 2013 as a circle defender when the club needed her to return to the defensive circle. Tash is not just a wonderful player but also a great club person, umpiring and serving on the committee. She is currently the club’s records officer.
