New stores open their doors as customers converge on Mount Gambier Marketplace The Mount Gambier Marketplace continues to go from strength to strength with another spate of new businesses choosing to call the vibrant shopping precinct home. Food outlet, The Gravy Boat, book retailer, The Book Grocer, and hair supply giant, Hairhouse Warehouse have opened their doors in the Penola Road centre in the past three weeks, while Super Dollar and Remote Fashion have also joined the Mount Gambier Marketplace family in the past six months. The new stores have added a whole new dimension to the centre. The Gravy Boat (pictured right) is offering a wide variety of food, from roast of the day to roast meat rolls, from fresh made salads to soup and from schnitzel rolls to made to order sandwiches and wraps. The Book Grocer (pictured below
right) is a paradise for book lovers, with discounted prices on a wide variety of titles, from new releases to the latest cookbooks, from children’s classics to stunning reference books, and everything in between. While the Hairhouse Warehouse offers every hair care product known to man with the backing of national buying power. From straighteners to shampoo, from accessories to curl enhancers, the Hairhouse Warehouse (pictured below left) has all your hair care needs covered. Bargain hunters love the variety on offer at Super Dollar, while Remote Fashion has just added to the already impressive range of fashion outlets calling Mount Gambier Marketplace home. The addition of tenants has also seen an increase in patronage since the shopping precinct’s August 2012
opening. And they are coming from far and wide, particularly on weekends, with shoppers from South West Victoria, Keith and Bordertown all choosing to make Mount Gambier Marketplace their one stop shop for all their retail needs. The Mount Gambier Marketplace Facebook page is the best place to keep up to date with the ever changing landscape of the city’s newest retail outlets and if you like them on Facebook you will be the first to know if any new stores open, what specials are currently on offer and what activities and programs the Marketplace is running. As always, the Mount Gambier Marketplace has an amazing school holiday program on offer, with THE MINIONS TAKING OVER Mount Gambier these holidays (see ad below for details).

Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers • Various cellar doors throughout the Coonawarra/Penola. • July 1 – 30 Cellar Dwellers is all about hidden secrets and rare treasures – it’s the only time of the year the cellar doors dust off their museum wines, back vintages and special release wines to truly indulge the palate. It was a concept more than a decade ago when the vignerons were looking for a hook to increase visitation during the quieter winter months and it’s a concept that has thrived – attracting, particularly, the genuine wine appreciators, to sample some of the region’s best and rarest drops. LOCAL Pocket rockets add Victorian title to SA championship The evidence is indisputable – the Western Border Netball Association 13 & under team was the smallest team at the 2015 Victorian Association Championships in Melbourne. If they looked undersized at the SA Country Championships last month, they were even more so and the comments from opposition clubs were audible as the petite squad went through its warm-ups for each game and then hit the court. But the players were not concerned about their height, or lack of. Their skill and above all, determination, was set to shine through, and under the guidance of coach Christie McCourt, the association’s youngest representative team made it a clean sweep of the trophies on offer this representative season. The good news, is more than half this dual championship winning team are still eligible for the age group in 2016. The girls started with a loss, ironically, against the team that they eventually toppled for the title – Mornington Peninsula, before heading on a four game winning streak that then saw them add a semi final victory and the 11-9 grand final triumph. It was an against the odds title but the Western Border pocket rockets were up for the challenge. All nine girls had their part to play. Goaler Paige Nitschke was a master at creating space and her accuracy under pressure was impressive; fellow shooter Nyah Allen was the focal point of the shooting circle and
her strength on the hold was pivotal; Kate Walker was the utility, giving the goalers relief and also making her mark on the attacking wing with some clever passing, while fellow wing attack Ellen Brown was dynamic on the drive and never stopped running. Through the middle Emily Close was arguably the pick of the players for the day long championship finals. She came to barely the shoulder of all her opponents but her grit and determination saw her create turnovers she had no right to get her hands on. On the defensive wing, Abby McShane played the perfect shut down role and her hands pressure and determination to not allow her opponent space was key, while Hannah Nitschke had an impact defensively and with her strong driving down court, whether in the centre or on the defensive wing. Tyne Bosko produced her usual tight checking defensive game, complete with stunning interceptions and strong rebounding, while Kayleigh Taylor took on tall goal shooter after tall goal shooter and won. The dynamic defender played on opponents literally head and shoulders above her and then some and she continued to make them work hard and get her hands on any poor delivery. After beating Geelong, Albury, Sunraysia and Alberton, the girls defeated Gippsland in the semi final by two to earn a rematch with Mornington and after
leading by four at the main break, they held on to win by two goals, adding the Victorian title to their June Long weekend SA Country title. The championship winning team included Paige Nitschke (Millicent), Nyah Allen (East), Kate Walker (Millicent), Ellen Brown (North), Emily Close (North), Abby McShane (South), Hannah Nitschke (Millicent), Tyne Bosko (East) and Kayleigh Taylor (Millicent), with Claire Day (North) part of the SA Championship winning team, but unavailable for the Melbourne finals. The 15 & under team had a tough day at the office, finishing sixth in
their pool, while the 17 & under team finished fourth. AT THE THEATRE The Dancers Company – The Australian Ballet • HAMILTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, HAMILTON • July 15 Experience world-class ballet live on stage with The Dancers Company, The Australian Ballet’s regional touring program. In 2015 the Company brings three spectacular classical works to Victoria and New South Wales for limited shows. .
Jam packed arts program for Glenelg Shire Glenelg Shire continues its tradition of being an ‘arts capital’ in South West Victoria, with the Melbourne Ballet Company, a piano trio and highly respected Noni Hazlehurst in the dramatic and confronting, Mother, all set to grace the local stage during the second half of 2015. The program includes details of 14 performances, a wide variety of community arts activities and 12 exhibitions being presented around the shire in the next six months. Glenelg Shire also welcomes back Little Wing Puppets, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the seductive music of Zulya and the Children of the Underground and acoustic guitarist Nick Charles and friends. Dance fans will be in for an impressive interpretation of the famous Carmen story, and the hilarious play, Australia Day by Jonathon Biggins, will have us all rolling in the aisles as it takes a swipe at community politics in the country. Budding actors will have the opportunity to be part of a show with The Confidence Man, and young people will also be able to get close to the organisation and enjoyment of a music event with The Set List. Several of the performances will be held in Casterton, including a very popular morning show with Back to Broadway, exquisite shadow puppetry in The Owl’s Apprentice and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra Virtuosi. Each month, a new exhibition will be featured at the Portland Arts Centre showcasing the works of local and other artists using a wide variety of topics and media, commencing with the amazing talent of Kenneth Jack in July and followed by the Courage to Care touring exhibition. As well as the usual high quality workshops available at Julia Street Creative Space, Community Arts activities will extend to Heywood this time with an engaging and varied visual arts program suitable for beginners or any level of experience and to Casterton with felt making, pincushion embroidery and crochet and bookbinding. The program also details several current and continuing exhibitions from the Glenelg Shire Council Cultural Collection, which are on display at a number of locations throughout the shire. The July to December 2015 program is available from Council Customer Services Centres in Casterton, Heywood and Portland, the Portland Arts Centre and other council facilities. Full program details are also available on council’s website in the events calendar and in the Arts and Culture section.
LOCAL Grand accolade for Patrick’s Grande Reserve Cabernet It’s official. Patrick of Coonawarra’s 2006 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is among the world’s best reds. The wine dubbed the ‘true essence of Coonawarra’ has been awarded the highly coveted maximum 5 stars in one of the world’s largest and most influential cabernet tasting line-ups, keeping company with powerhouse French label Chateau Mouton Rothschild ($2270.00/bottle) and Chateau Latour Premier Grand Cru ($1585). Judges of Winestate Magazine’s International Cabernet & Bordeaux Blends tasting declared Patrick of Coonawarra’s flagship wine “very compelling”, applauding the “lovely intense hit of varietal fruit aromas” lifting out of the glass. “The palate has (also) aged beautifully and is soft and long and fills the mouth with more of those intense varietal fruit characters,” said Winestate’s Joy Walterfang. The Grande Reserve was one of only five wines entered from around the globe to score five stars in the top 5 “Cabernet and Blends $100+” category. At $125 per bottle, Winestate’s Peter Jackson said it is considerably more affordable than all but one of its competitors. “It’s sensational value for money,” he said. Patrick of Coonawarra’s chief winemaker Luke Tocaciu said the accolade is a wonderful tribute to his late father and winery founder, Patrick Tocaciu, who poured more than four decades of passion into the 2006 vintage. “It is a wine that is selected from the best parcel of fruit from our Home Block vineyard and only released in the best years, and it is a wine that my father was really proud of,” he said. “He set out to make the best example of Coonawarra cabernet that can be found – and therefore, a cabernet that would be among the world’s best – and this accolade confirms that the Grande Reserve is achieving this aim.” Mr Tocaciu said 40 months of maturation in 100% new, tightly-grained French oak followed by four years of bottle age before release enhances complex and rich notes of mint, tobacco,
liquorice and dark fruits and ensures that the ‘06 wine is drinking at its best. “It is great to see that the time, effort and patience that goes into this wine is being recognised,” he said. “2006 was a cooler year in Coonawarra, making this wine the classic, elegant style with excellent cellaring potential that has made the Coonawarra region famous.” Award-winning wine writers Tyson Stelzer, Mike Bennie and Huon Hooke have also heaped praise on the 2006 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, awarding it 95 points: “The big gun from Patrick, gift-boxed and released with extra bottle age. Three years in oak, four in bottle. It’s a cabernet of great structure and length with a lot of savoury, oak-matured characters. Tremendous intensity and length on the palate. Smooth, supple, gently mellowed tannins. A delicious wine of a savoury rather than fruit-driven style.” – Huon Hooke “This is a fancy-feeling wine – deeply coloured, rich and ripe and cedary in perfume, rolls across the palate in waves of fleshy fruit and molten tannin. It’s decidedly bold and powerful, but doesn’t forget an element of drinkability. Impressive for style.” – Mike Bennie Patrick of Coonawarra’s 2006 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon features on the front cover of Winestate’s new issue, which hit stands last week.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Grease is the word... by Robbie Tansel This whole Grease financial crisis has me completely baffled. You know me, I’m a keen follower of current events and like to keep my finger on the pulse of what is happening in the world. I’m struggling a little with this one though. What I understand from the news is that Grease has decided they can’t repay some loans they took out. They owed these loans to a number of countries and this will somehow affect financial markets around the world, probably even in Australia. So they made Grease in 1978 and it
was based on a 1971 musical about two youngsters who fall in love at a 1950s high school. Most of you are probably aware that it starred Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. I’m assuming the fact that it starred Olivia Newton-John who is an Australian is probably why it’s going to affect our financial markets. No doubt the countries who are owed money are probably going to come after us for her debts. I’m not sure we should be held responsible for that though. She lives in America now I think. Sure
she’s done a few concerts and what not with John Farnham, but she’s really more American these days… unless she does something really good again and then we’ll claim her. I think that’s called the “Successful New Zealander rule”. I’m not sure who will be held responsible for John Travolta’s part in Grease. He’s a Scientologist so I don’t know if he still counts as an American. Again I’m a bit concerned that we’ll be held responsible. He’s a licenced pilot and some sort of a Qantas ambassador I think so no doubt that’ll come back to bite us on the butt. I still don’t understand why they are in debt after 40 odd years though. My understanding is that it was quite a successful little money earner at the time. A quick look on Wikipedia tells you that it had a really quite reasonable six million dollar budget and then took nearly four hundred million dollars at the box office. Someone

month. believe they’ve received word that they will still be able to perform the musical but they may be held responsible for the Grease debt so we might all need to get out and support them. Okay, I’ve just received word that it was actually Greece the country. Boy do I feel silly. That doesn’t surprise me with all that crockery that they smash all the time. If people are smashing up all the plates and bowls at every celebration, you’re going to go through a fair bit of cash. I really should do some proper research on this stuff. hasn’t been doing a good job managing the cash there if they’re in strife, you’d have to think. I’ve racked my brain about whether there was something in the plot of the movie that might have caused some sort of financial issues after it was released. The best I could come up with was Olivia Newton’s tight black pants at the end of the movie. I wonder if there may have been a large number of elderly men who had heart attacks after seeing Ms Newton-John wiggling herself around in the incredibly tight pants. This raises the question though, wouldn’t they have been insured for these kind of possibilities. I’m not sure what sort of insurance that would be mind you. I guess the other question would be, “Do elderly men go and watch musicals?” I would suggest not. So we’re still not any closer to sorting out this whole mystery. My best theory is that it probably has something to do with the sequel, Grease 2 starring Michelle Pfeifer and who cares who else. I’ve never seen it but from what I’ve heard it was a stinker. Even that though had a budget of about eleven million and still made about four million profit. This issue has implications locally because I know that St Martins Lutheran College are performing the musical at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in about a

Mental Health services closer to home now The Mount Gambier Integrated Mental Health Inpatient Unit (IMHIU) started seeing its first clients last week after officially opening its doors to the public. Country Health SA Acting Director, Mental Health, Strategic Operations, Nicole Jones, said the six-bed unit would provide high-quality, specialised mental health care. “The South East is just the third country community in South Australia to have a country-based inpatient mental health facility that will provide a level of mental health care not previously available in this region,” Ms Jones said. “Specially designed with the needs of mental health clients in mind, the inpatient unit will allow consumers to focus on their recovery in a flexible and therapeutic environment. This is the first time South East residents will have access to an acute mental health inpatient unit in their region, meaning more people will be able to receive care locally, rather than traveling to Adelaide.Featuring single bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a dining and lounge area, clothes washing facilities and comfortable furnishings, the unit aims to be as home-like as possible. We know how important it is for country people to receive care in or near their home town and that is why the opening of this new unit is so exciting for our health service and the community.” Ms Jones said a full-time psychiatrist and manager will head up the unit.“These experts will provide key leadership for the team, which will consist of a range of mental health clinicians, such as nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists,” she said.“The inpatient unit staff will also work closely with community mental health clinicians in the South East as part of one integrated mental health team.” Located at Mount Gambier Hospital, the mental health inpatient unit follows the opening of similar services in Whyalla and the Riverland, which have already cared for more than 240 clients since opening last year. The implementation of IMHIUs in country SA was identified as part of the Stepping Up: A Social Inclusion Action Plan for Mental Health Reform 2007-2012 report. The State Government has invested more than $300 million to improve mental health services and infrastructure, in response to recommendations made in the Stepping Up Report.
LOCAL Nominate now for the 2015 Business Awards The highly anticipated Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards were launched last week and nominations are now open. The Chamber of Commerce is calling on citizens of Mount Gambier to nominate their favourite business in any of the categories, and businesses are welcome to self-nominate. Categories include Outstanding Retail Business, Agribusiness, Service Business, Small Business, Manufacturing/Building
Industry, Tourism/Hospitality/Accommodation and Environment and Sustainability. Also up for grabs is the prestigious Outstanding Employee of the Year Award where citizens or the employer can nominate an individual that they think brings something extra to a business. The awards are an opportunity for business owners to look at their business and, once nominated, businesses are required to fill out a short and simple submission. This process allows businesses to see what they are doing well and what they could improve on. Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce president Lynette Martin (pictured) understands that being nominated is a great honour. “To be nominated is a real compliment, we have many fine businesses in Mount Gambier who provide great product and customer service,” she said. “Our businesses provide employment and support our local clubs, schools and charities, it is a great opportunity for them to be showcased and rewarded.” The Chamber of Commerce is urging citizens to support the awards to acknowledge and celebrate Mount Gambier’s businesses. Nomination forms are available at the National Australian Bank, once again the major sponsor, as well as at Chapman’s Newsagency and online. Other sponsors are the City of Mount Gambier, the District Council of Grant, the Border Watch (Hall of Fame), Regional Development Australia, Win TV, Lifestyle 1, 96.1 Star FM, 5SE 963 AM and Job Prospects (Employee of the Year award). Nominations will close on Friday, August 7, with the presentation evening held on Friday, October 16, at the Barn Palais.

WRAD TAPESTRY PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO AOD PROBLEMS A new book highlights many programs and events introduced in the Warrnambool region to break down the isolation of people with alcohol and drug and mental health issues. The WRAD Tapestry collects stories, poems and art related to substance abuse and highlights many innovative programs introduced over the past decade to better connect people with alcohol and drug problems with their community. The book provides an insight into the lives of people with lived experience of mental health and drug and alcohol problems and what is being done in the community to ease their burden It includes contributions from people with substance use and addiction problems and staff who help them to recover and reassimilate into the community. The 48-page book was launched last week at at South West TAFE. WRAD Operations Manager Daryl Fitzgibbon said the book was a record of creative programs developed over the past decade and he hoped it would be a catalyst for more ideas. Mr Fitzgibbon said the book was a great outlet for contributors to express their feelings and to educate the broader community. “Most of the programs WRAD and our collaborators have introduced have been inspired by the needs and stories of clients,” he said. “WRAD and its partners have been innovative in practising and exploring integrated care and playing a role in the development and implementation of the recovery model of care. It’s also cathartic and inspiring for people to express themselves through poetry, writing or art and to see that published.” WRAD Improved Services Initiative Coordinator Angela Alexander said the innovative approaches developed by WRAD over the past decade allowed for holistic, collaborative service delivery. “This aligns well with the recovery model of care as it improves opportunities for better outcomes while strengthening communities,” Ms Alexander said. The book was compiled by Rick Bayne and designed by Fiona Fitzgerald. It is available for free from WRAD at 172 Merri St.
LOCAL Samuel Johnson’s emotional plea taken to heart in Portland After hearing Samuel Johnson’s emotional story of his sister’s terminal illness, and their revised pledge to raise $10 million to help find a cure for breast cancer, the Glenelg Shire community dug deep to find an impressive $1500 in donations within the space of just two hours. There was barely a breath in the room, as the 120 audience members hung on every word spoken by the popular actor, who was in town to perform alongside Tottie Goldsmith at the Portland Arts Centre at the end of last month. Samuel’s sister Connie has fought cancer three times in her life and Samuel has been with her every step of the way. His message included a reminder to all women to be breast aware as early detection
is often the key to survival. Samuel’s inspirational story involved travelling 15,955 kilometres around Australia and raising nearly $1.5 million to keep his promise to his sister. One of Australia’s most recognisable personalities in the Australian entertainment industry - best known for his roles on The Secret Life of Us, Crackerjack, Underbelly II and Network Ten’s Rush – Samuel’s ‘Love Your Sister’ presentation was part of the Glenelg Talks series at Portland Library and was sold out well before the Saturday afternoon event. The afternoon included a pink themed high tea and Samuel impressively managed a live demonstration of his unicycle riding – circling the entire audience in the small space of the library. The fundraising total included ticket and merchandise sales, 100 per cent of which will be directly donated to the Garvan Institute, which is conducting research to find a cure for breast cancer. Glenelg Shire’s total doesn’t take into account additional donations made at the Portland Arts Centre that evening.

ADVERTORIAL I Denture Med
Denture Med expanding services in the South East Denture-wearers in the South East now have greater access to premier denture services, with two of South Australia’s leading denture clinics, Denture Med and Special Care Dentures, confirming their merger last month. The merger was effective from July 1. Clinics in Millicent and Mount Gambier that were Special Care Dentures will now operate as Denture Med, although Dental Prosthetist William Hodge (pictured left) will continue to service these clinics on rotation, while it will be ‘business as usual’ at Denture Med’s Naracoorte clinic. “We are very excited to merge with Special Care Dentures and to have Mr Hodge come onboard as a Dental Prosthetist and Director at Denture Med,” said Denture Med’s Mathew Vidic (pictured right). “Mr Hodge has provided devoted denture services to hundreds of patients in the South East for many years and we look forward to working together as we strive to continue to deliver superior care for denturewearers not just in Naracoorte, Millicent and Mt Gambier but other areas in the state.” William Hodge is equally pleased to join Denture Med as a Director. “Both Denture Med and Special Care Dentures share a vision of enhancing the life of every patient within the communities we service,” he said. “By joining our businesses, we will continue
to deliver an unparalleled level of quality care to regional and metropolitan South Australia.” Good dentures, good denture care and regular check ups make a huge difference to quality of life, which in turn helps individuals to lead an independent lifestyle at home longer. The two prosthetists, who have more than 15 years’ experience between them, say the merger is particularly exciting for regional South Australians
who have, in the past, had to travel afar to access high-quality denture services.

Chocolate lovers’ paradise One hundred years of Haigh’s Chocolates has gone on show at the State Library of South Australia with original packaging, chocolate moulds, memorabilia, photographs and tales from a century of delicious chocolate making. The exhibition Enjoyed for Generations – 100 Years of Fine Chocolate will be open until Sunday, July 26, and is one of Haigh’s Chocolates signature events during this, its year of centenary celebrations. Many of the items on display, including chocolate boxes sold over 80 years ago, have only been discovered throughout the last three years during which Haigh’s archivist Pam McAllister has been focused on collecting, organising and preserving the story of Haigh’s Chocolates. Alister Haigh (pictured) said he and his family were proud to be sharing their story. “The exhibition begins from the day that my great-grandfather Alfred opened the doors of the first store in the Beehive Building in May 1915,” said Alister. “It affords a ‘behind-the-scenes’ glance of Haigh’s and what is important to the family and the business; our people, sustainable practices, artisanal skills and the making of chocolate from the raw cocoa bean. There is also an interactive element that enables visitors to see, learn about and smell the raw materials used in chocolate making.” Director of the State Library of South Australia Alan Smith said he was delighted that Haigh’s had decided to open its archives. “It is wonderful to see a multi-generational South Australian family business such as Haigh’s Chocolates value its history and tell its story in this way,” he said. This travelling exhibition will be located in the Ante Room at the Institute Building of the State Library of South Australia, North Terrace until July 26, before visiting Sydney and Melbourne. Highlights of the exhibition will then visit Jamestown and Mount Gambier where Alfred Haigh lived and worked. Haigh’s Chocolates is the largest family-owned ‘bean-to-bar’ manufacturer in Australia and in keeping with tradition continues to hand make artisan chocolate from the raw cocoa bean.

2015 Sheepvention competition entries now open Sheepvention 2015 will be held on August 3 and 4 at the Hamilton Showgrounds. The Western District Sheep Show again is a huge attraction of the two days and in 2015, the White Suffolks will take centre stage as the feature breed of the show. Convenor of the White Suffolk section Steve Milne believes the feature breed display will showcase a great cross section of White Suffolks, Australia’s leading terminal sire breed. “I am expecting a record number of exhibits from across three states,” he said. “This gives lamb producers a great opportunity to speak with a number of leading breeders and consider some of the best prime lamb genetics available.” Not to be outdone, the dog section is also expecting a fantastic event this year. Always a favourite with the crowd the Coprice Victorian Farm Dog Championships will have competitions for encourage, novice and open dogs. Competition convenor Ian O’Connell said Sheepvention was one of the most prestigious working dog events in Victoria and attracted a very high standard of competitor and working dog from all over south east Australia. The event will culminate with the Championship competition, entries close on July10. Sheepvention’s main stay the inventions competition is in its’ 37th year. Entries are coming in well this year but there is still time to enter. “With over $6000 in cash and prizes there is plenty of incentive to get inventing!” said business and events manager Peta Anderson. “We have already received some really good inventions that are showcasing new technologies, it should be an exciting competition.” Ms Anderson said. In addition there will still be the Wool Handling Competitions, Australasian Young Designer Wool Awards, plus a raft of School focused competitions. SOILS CONFERENCE LINKS FARM INNOVATION TO PROFITS Linking farming innovation to improved profits is the focus of a soils conference in Colac in September. The 2015 South West Soil Conference at the Colac Otway Performing Arts and Cultural Centre on September 9 and 10 will show how agricultural activities impact on farming profitability. The biennial conference will feature field trips and prominent guest speakers and will provide practical and hands-on information to assist farmers and service providers to improve soils. Heytesbury District Landcare Network (HDLN) is coordinating the event with support from Corangamite and Glenelg Hopkins CMAs. Topics will include linking soil condition to profitability, low input farming, growing poppies in Victoria, farm nutrients and dairy effluent, land values, labelling standards and getting to know your soil. HDLN Landcare Coordinator Geoff Rollinson said the conference would be particularly helpful for landholders who want healthy soils on their farms for healthy profits. “Soils underpin the prosperity and resilience of our farming systems,” Mr Rollinson said. “Anyone who has farmed appreciates this and understands that we manage the soil not only for today but so it remains healthy and productive into the future.” The conference will focus on added-value enterprises that take products from the farm to consumers, including field trips to the Apostle Whey cheese manufacturing tourist attraction and the Koallah on-farm abattoir. Mr Rollinson said landholders could make their farms more sustainable by improving soil health. “Better nutrient and grazing management reduces risks and increases profitability. By attending the conference landholders can pick up on innovative ideas for improving their soils and service providers can arm them with the latest scientific knowledge about emerging sustainable agricultural practices,” he said. Participants are also able to have a health check by the National Centre for Farmer Health during the conference. The conference coincides with the International Year of Soils. The not-for-profit event builds on the successful 2012 and 2013 South West Soils Conferences. To register for the conference and for program details go to www.swsc.com or call 5598 3755 for further details.
LOCAL Heywood and District Advancing Country Towns Project Community Awareness Session Information sessions about the final part of the Heywood and District Advancing Country Towns Project, which is expected to include gateway and median strip tree planting, redesigning of garden beds, new tourist signage, reallocation of flag poles and improving connectivity and accessibility within Apex Park, will occur this Wednesday. Sessions (details below) will provide information on the Gateway Streetscaping Project and the implementation of the Budj Bim Master Plan (stage one). These are the two remaining projects as part of the ACT Project, which has been funded by the State Government and delivered through Glenelg Shire Council since 2011. Mayor Robert Halliday said the ACT funding had already allowed Council to accomplish some great economic development and capacity building outcomes for Heywood, Lake Condah and surrounding towns. “So far, we have finalised the Heywood and District Nature Based Tourism (NBT) Strategy, developed the Timber Industry Supply Chain Business Study, and implemented the Standing
Tall School-based Mentoring Program and Early Years Family Inclusion Project,” he said. “The Heywood and District Nature Based Tourism (NBT) Strategy identified Heywood as having the potential to become a gateway hub for existing and emerging tourism experiences but for this to happen, the townships needs to present itself as a tourist town with high amenity. “The Heywood Streetscaping Project will focus on streetscaping and beautification activities to improve the overall amenity of the town.” ACT funding priority areas included economic development and employment, skills and training to help address the disadvantage experience in the region. “We hoped to create improved outcomes for disadvantaged people in the region and want to ensure Heywood is a prosperous place to live and do business,” Cr Halliday said. Two community awareness sessions will be offered to the Heywood community this Wednesday - the first at 3.30pm, followed by an evening session at 5.30pm - in the Heywood Customer Service Centre Meeting Room.
LOCAL Drumming up nationwide support for Generations in Jazz A small band of Generations in Jazz officials are Queensland-bound this week in a bid to drum up interstate support for future events in the Blue Lake city. Generations in Jazz (GIJ) will have its own trade booth at the 2015 Maryborough Music Conference being held from July 9 – 12 at the Brolga Theatre & Convention Centre. GIJ board members Jim Kirkup and Christine Comley will travel to Queensland with multi-award winning Adelaide music director, Rob Chenoweth, whose Marryatville High School students took out both Division
1 and 2 at this year’s event. GIJ chairman James Morrison is a keynote speaker at the conference, and will also help out at the booth. “The biennial conference began in 2001, and is now recognised as Australia’s premier music educator’s conference, attracting up to 1000 music teachers from around the nation, so we really hope to be able to spread the word about the opportunities at Generations in Jazz for those schools who aren’t already involved,” said Mr Kirkup. Mount Gambier has already cemented its reputation as the nation’s jazz capital, with more than 3700 young musicians from around Australia flocking to the regional city last month from May 1-3. GIJ has also become a major drawcard for high profile international
acts, with the multi-platinum selling US sextet Take 6 performing and hosting workshops at this years event, along with the critically acclaimed Hot Horn Happening, which reunited for a special Australian encore in Mount Gambier. The Premier of South Australia, Hon. Jay Weatherill, MP, was in this year’s 5000-strong audience, describing the weekend as “absolutely extraordinary”. The target, now, is to take that message of success further afield, by assuring musicians all around the nation that the journey ‘down south’ is worth it. Bundaberg’s Shalom College was one of four Queensland schools participating in Mount Gambier this year, and was named a Fourth Division winner. Shalom College Jazz Band director and music teacher, James Belluz, described the school’s first trip to South Australia as “incredibly worthwhile”. “We did it for the 17 students in the band because they deserved it; some of them had been playing together for five or six years, and it was the right team at the right time in the right year for our school,” he said. “I am so glad that we were able to take them; they
were gobsmacked for three days, and that was the whole point.” Mr Belluz said one of Shalom College’s trumpet students made it into the GIJ Superband, and he would “absolutely urge” other schools to get involved. “It’s a lot of work getting there, but it’s so much more than 10 minutes on stage – we went down there to listen, and I couldn’t pull them away from watching the Division 1 bands in particular,” he said. “I know we changed lives this year, and that’s what it’s about.”

Local Sport SEABL Dazzling dozen as Pioneers secure overtime victory It took overtime to separate the Pioneers and visiting opponents Dandenong on Friday night at the Icehouse and in the intense final five minutes, Kurt Russell hit two threes that was a clear throw back to 2003 when the now veteran was part of the club’s inaugural South Conference and National Championship double. Maybe having fellow championship team mate Sam Fotu in town inspired the popular number 34. Unlike last weekend when the Pioneers struggled early to find their range on offence, the start against Dandenong was brought with Tyrone Lee and Brad Hill hitting sweet shots early to get the home side on the board. And the defensive effort was there right form tip off as well, with Erik Burdon fashioning a steal and Damian Johnson a block as the home side made an early statement – Dandenong might be entrenched in the top four in the East Conference but they were about to experience a step up in class with the reigning South Conference and National SEABL champions. The stats could not have been closer in the opening stanza – both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor, both shot at 50 percent from three point territory; with steals, turnovers, assists and rebounds all neck and neck as the visitors went to the break with a three point advantage. An 8-0 run in the dying minutes of the quarter by the Rangers setting up the, albeit narrow, quarter time buffer. Hill was the go to man for the Pioneers in the frenetic opening quarter, scoring 11 of his 15 points for the game in the period, including two threes, his only points from beyond the perimeter for the contest. The second quarter also started as an arm wrestle, at least for the first half of the quarter as neither side could break away or gain any momentum in the contest. But the Pioneers started to put the foot down – this time Tom Daly was the man with the hot hand, ending the first half with 18 points, 11 of those in the second term, and when youngster Kane de Wit brought
the house down with a buzzer beating two point jumper on the half time siren, the margin was eight points in the home side’s favour. The Rangers weren’t done with yet though and the visitors started the third with a bang and it reverberated around the Icehouse – the 24-11 quarter saw the Pioneers trailing by five at the final change. The Pioneers could not buy a basket, shooting an abysmal three from 18 from the floor, with their free throw shooting also below par. That loss of the radar was compounded by the fact that the Rangers, who themselves had struggled with shooting in the second quarter, got back on track, particularly from three point territory. Staring a five point deficit in the face, the home side, and its home crowd, sprung into action, in what turned out to be a tense final quarter. When Daly hit a three with 6:07 to play, the Pioneers hit the front again for the first time since early in the lacklustre third quarter. But there were many twists in the tale to come and it was Daly again with 1.45 on the clock that restored a one point buffer to the Pioneers. The lead was two for the home side with 10 seconds to play when Burdon converted one from two from the charity stripe but the Rangers again rallied and Andrew Harms hit the match tying basket with three seconds to play. Burdon had the ball in hand but the Hail Mary was never going to drop and the visitors had forced the game into overtime. The home side started the extra period with a 7-0 run, punctuated by Kurt Russell turning back the clock with a trademark three that had long time fans thinking it was 2003. The Rangers fought their way back to a three point deficit with eight seconds t play when Russell again delighted the packed house, draining another three and putting the result beyond doubt – a Brad Hill buzzer beating dunk, putting the exclamation point on a stunning five minutes of overtime basketball. It was one of those finals type games that will stand the reigning
champions in good stead going forward, with a number of cameos, as well as good effort from club on court leaders. Hills’ opening quarter and efforts on the boards that yielded 12 rebounds; Daly’s first half, in particular,; Russell turning back the clock and then there was SEABL Player of the Month Damian Johnson (pictured), who filled every stats column in an inspiring performance – 16 points, eight rebounds, eight steals, five assists and four blocks. Early foul trouble limited Tyrone Lee’s ability to impact the contest, while Burdon was able to hit shots at critical times. The Pioneers now sit five wins clear at the top of the South Conference standings and with lowly ranked Brisbane on the agenda this Friday night at the Icehouse, should be able to record a baker’s dozen of wins on the trot. Not surprisingly, coach Richard Hill was named coach of the month for June.
INDOOR BOWLS Mixed pairs championship decided Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association had another break from Mount Gambier Community RSL premiership season to hold its fourth association championship. This championship was the Faith Jewellers/David Peacock Carpentry Mixed Pairs. With team numbers being higher than last year, a total of 30 entries competed for the 2015 Mixed Pairs title. The mother and son pair from Post-Tel, Zac Pearson, as skipper, and Fiona Pearson, as his lead, met the inform father and daughter duo of Kym Franklin, skippering and her lead Bob White, from the Saints team, in the first semi-final, with Pearson’s team winning 9 shots to 4. In the second semi-final the Post-Tel/Mil Lel pair of Andrew Simpson, skippering and Joy Axleby defeated another combined team of Keisha Pearson from Post-Tel and Coehen Keppels from Blue Lake Bowlers 6 shots to 5. Simpson and Pearson met in the final, both teams playing exceptionally well and both deserved to make the final. In the
final Pearson’s team won the first four ends and had a comfortable lead only allowing Simpson’s team to score on the fifth and last end, not scoring enough shots to make an impact, giving Zac and Fiona victory in the 2015 Faith Jewellers/David Peacock Carpentry Mixed Pairs Championship 6 shots to 3. The consolation semi-finals were contested between Thomas Butler and Fiona Rochow from Blue Lake Bowlers who defeated John and Doreen Oakley from Commercial Club 8 shots to 5 and the second semi final saw Brad Errock and Kristy Davis, from Glenburnie, defeat Shirley Gifford and Ken McCormick from Saints 13 shots to 0. Brad and Kristy beat Thomas and Fiona in the final of the consolation to win 8 shots to 2.

Local Sport FOOTBALL Defending champions fall at final hurdle Murray South East has fallen at the final hurdle in its SA Country Football Championship title defence, having to settle for a third runner-up effort in four years, after succumbing to a strong Southern Districts line-up in the title decider in Port Augusta. After letting Southern Districts stretch their advantage to 20 points early in the second quarter - a margin they still enjoyed at the main break, the reigning champs rallied. At the eight minute mark of the final quarter, Billy Laurie slotted a major that gave Murray South East the lead for the first time in the tense contest but just over a minute later William Rivers split the goal posts and Southern refused to relinquish the lead and claimed the title with a three point victory. Murray South East started thiri title defence with a strong 34 point victory over Central on Saturday with Penola’s Adam Merrett starting the weekend in style with a three goal haul, a feat he emulated in the second game, which saw Murray South East grit it out for a four point victory which earned the defending titleholders a fourth consecutive grand final berth. Kybybolite’s Bill Laurie was best on ground in that second round win and was again instrumental in the final, kicking two goals, including the one that earned Murray South East the lead for the only time in the title decider. Merrett also scored two goals in the grand final. Brett O’Neil continued his stellar form of the Western Border season with a good championships.
