Donut King owners bring new carvery outlet to Mount Gambier Marketplace Mount Gambier’s Marketplace food court has been crying out for more variety and from July 3, those prayers have been answered with the grand opening of The Gravy Boat. The carvery style eatery will have a strong focus on roast meat but there will be so much more on The Gravy Boat menu. From roast of the day to roast meat rolls, from fresh made salads to soup, from schnitzel rolls to made to order sandwiches and wraps, The Gravy Boat is set to give customers the diverse options they have been looking for. And it’s won’t just be your stock standard gravy – the Gravy Boat is taking that to the next level with a variety of gourmet flavours

Phone

on offer to tempt your tastebuds and add to your dish of choice. The faces behind The Gravy Boat will be familiar to many – the Marketplace’s newest operation set to be run by The Donut King’s Sam and Kylie Minto. With a hugely successful first year in the city and running Donut King, Sam and Kylie were ready for a new challenge and they could see the need for another option in the Marketplace food court. “We really want to thank our loyal customers at Donut King over the past year,” Sam said. “We are hoping for similar success with The Gravy Boat.” The Gravy Boat will be open standard centre hours with the new eatery set to be officially

unveiled on Friday, July 3. Suitable for an easy family meal or a tasty lunch on the run, The Gravy Boat is aiming to bring quality, fresh food to the Marketplace patrons. As for Donut King, the couple has instigated a new fundraising campaign for local school, sporting clubs and community organisation. “We would encourage any sporting club or community group to come in and see us and get some more information,” Sam said. Groups can sell Donut King products as a fundraiser and then have the added bonus of also being given a percentage of the sales back for their coffers. “Mulga Street Primary

School, a couple of football clubs and a soccer club have already taken advantage of the opportunity,” Sam said. Formerly from Melbourne, Sam, Kylie and their children have now well and truly settled into the Limestone Coast and Mount Gambier and they are looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces at their newest venture – The Gravy Boat

LOCAL Million milestone for Hamilton Livestock Exchange There was reason to celebrate at the Hamilton Regional Livestock Exchange last Thursday after the selling of the one millionth sheep for the 2014/15 financial year. It has taken 70 sales to achieve this throughput and Livestock Exchange Manager Chris Dahlenburg says 2014/15 has been the busiest financial year for the exchange since 2009/2010 – the last time one million sheep were sold. “We sold 460,000 head in a six week period in November/ December 2014. There’s also been approximately 200,000 sheep agisted at the saleyards this year and we’ve also sold just over 46,000 cattle so we’ve been very busy which is really pleasing” Mr Dahlenburg said. The one million head were made up of approximately 670,000 lambs and 330,000 sheep, with the lucky (or unlucky) sheep being sold to TDC Penola. These numbers support council’s commitment to redeveloping the saleyards which is estimated to cost just over $6 million, with works being staged over a number of financial years. This redevelopment has been identified as one of Council’s priority projects and it promises huge economic and social benefits for the Greater Hamilton region. Director of Shire Infrastructure Kevin O’Brien says construction works for Stage one of the redevelopment, valued at $2.6 million, are well underway. “Works on this stage include a new roof over a portion of the selling pens and new drafts, rainwater tanks, energy efficient lighting and improved loading ramps, a new access road onto Port Fairy Road, sealing works and a new storage facility” Mr O’Brien said. “At the completion of the redevelopment, we hope to have established one of the most efficient saleyards in Australia. It will deliver operational, structural, environmental and animal welfare benefits and improve OH&S and regional competition. In particular, it will result in a more attractive venue for selling of livestock, harvesting of water and enhanced buildings. It is

Heywood Kindergarten students shared a cultural discovery through nearby National Heritage Landscape, Budj Bim, the Gunditjmara name for the extinct volcano Mount Eccles, earlier this month. Sacred to the Gunditjmara people, the Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape at Lake Condah is home to the remains of potentially one of Australia’s largest aquaculture systems. Dating back thousands of years, the area shows evidence of a large, settled Aboriginal community systematically farming and smoking eels for food and trade. Heywood Kindergarten Teaching Director Corinna Bell said the day was full of excitement for students. “It was pouring with rain so instead of walking we caught the bus, which was very exciting for some of the children who had never caught a bus before,” she said. “Sean ‘Macca’ Bell spoke to the children about some of the items that were on display. “He spoke about the eel traps, and how the women would make the traps out of the grass reeds that were growing in the area. “We saw a short film about our local land, and some of the children recognised some of the people in the film. “The new display centre had a lot of valuable information and we would like to thank Budj Bim for having us all.” The Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape was included in the National Heritage List on July 20, 2004.

REPLACEMENT FOR OLD MARINA JETTY TO BE PART OF FUTURE HARBOUR PLAN Glenelg Shire Council will receive $80,000 in funding to undertake a Portland Marine Master Plan that will consider future new marine facilities in the harbour, including an alternative to replace Portland’s deteriorated Old Marina Jetty. The funding will be received from the Boating Safety Facilities Program and comes with the forced closure of the rapidly deteriorating jetty. The ageing structure failed to meet safety requirements during a routine assessment as part Council’s Asset Audit and Compliance Program, conducted earlier this year, forcing its partial closure. Since then, structural engineers noted the jetty’s accelerating deterioration during regular inspections and recommended its immediate complete closure from 30 June. Mayor Robert Halliday said safety and community welfare has been the priority for Glenelg Shire Council in all decisions relating to the Old Marina Jetty. “The recommendation, made by an external party, was that Council prohibit public access to the entire jetty from the end of this month,” Cr Halliday said. Council has contacted boat owners currently berthed at the jetty to assist in making alternate arrangements.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Great Scott... by Robbie Tansel s as

I’m not sure how many of you are aware of it, but we are all going back to the future at the end of June. A second is going to be added to all of our clocks

on June 30 to make sure that atomic clocks and astronomical time stay synchronised. I don’t know if that baffles you as much as it baffles me so let me try to explain. It’s called a leap second. Because the Earth’s rotation is slowing down, something has to be done to keep time happening at the right time. Am I blowing your minds or what?! If a tree falls in the forest when nobody is there during that second, does it make a sound? As I essentially understand it, it means that at the end of June we are all going to be travelling in time. While that sounds pretty exciting and makes all my Marty McFly in Back to the Future dreams come true, when I start thinking about the practicalities I start to see some problems that we should all be concerned about. For starters, what am I going to do with that extra one second? I’ve been gifted the one thing we all want: more time! I don’t want to waste it. Yet I can’t think of something worthwhile to use it on. You might think it’s only a second but think of all the time you’re going to waste adjusting all of the clocks in your house. The clock on your microwave, the clock on your video, your watches, the clock on the oven, the clock on the wall, your bedside alarm clock. There goes fifteen minutes of your life straight away. All for the sake of one

second. You want to make sure your clock is showing the correct time though. All of your favourite television shows will suddenly be another second late. As if it’s not bad enough already! No television show ever starts or finishes at the time advertised in the TV guide. I’d love to know how that works by the way. e program was filmed and edited two months prior to the night it’s aired yet they can’t edit it down to the one hour that it was advertised to run for. Or put the actual length of the show in the TV guide? It’s rude and sends a very poor message about the importance of being punctual. How about the fact that your wife is always late? As we all know, there is Eastern Standard Time, Central Standard Time, Western Standard Time, and then some randomly undefined time zone that women operate in. I think it’s called the “In a minute” time zone. It’s important to remember that in standard English, “minute” is a unit of time lasting for 60 seconds whereas in Womanese it is a descriptive term that means when I’m ready and can last anywhere between 10 and 700 standard English minutes. This whole added second thing isn’t going to help with punctuality. In fact, I think we all know that quite a few women are going to use it as their excuse. “Sorry, dear, I’m late because of the leap second.” They’re going to milk it for all it’s worth. So what actually happens in that second? Does the world cease to exist? Do we all just stand around and wait for the clock to start again? If a person is born in that second do they actually exist? Is it possible we could end up in some sort of parallel dimension? Something really has to be done. We can’t just let this happen. I propose we contact the International Earth Rotation and Reference System Service in Paris, France and express our concerns. My understanding is that scientists have been suggesting we drop the leap second at regular conferences since about 1999 (can someone please get me an invite to one of those conferences because they sound like a hoot.) The I.E.R.R.S.S have kept us totally in the dark about this too. They’ve added 25 seconds since 1972! Outrageous! I thought I didn’t feel quite right Troy Bell, Tony Pasin, Andrew Lee, where are you on this issue? Drop everything, contact me at robbietansel@gmail. com and let’s sort this out. I think it’s possible that all of this will make sense in about 25 seconds. Wait for it. Wait for it.

LOCAL Fifty years in the forest Few people know the forest like Peter Muhovics does. The skilled tree faller, harvest machine operator and saw-man celebrated 50 years working in the industry in June. An affable bloke with a strong work ethic and competitive streak, his five decade long career has become something of local forestry legend. And it’s not difficult to understand why. He grew up in Glencoe, the son of a hardworking forest logger. “Dad brought me out to work when I was probably only eight. It was hand-felling with an axe in those days,” said Peter, who lives in Mount Burr, the heart of forest country.

“When I was 15 I started paid work. I’d drive the old FJ without a licence, just to get out into the bush.” And barring a brief stint at the Tantanoola Cellulose mill at 18, it is just where he has stayed, working with harvest contractors Harry Donald, Peter Huckle, G&R Logging and today, Fennell Forestry. Well known forestry consultant Lew Parsons first met Peter 30 years ago, while working as a harvest manager for Woods and Forests. “I would head out to the bush to check on harvest operations. I’d always head straight to Peter because he was very professional, he knew the

forest and the products,” Lew said. “He was also a bit of a bush larrikin and we all enjoyed that.” Lew said unlike many before him, Peter had managed to endure the many challenges faced by the timber industry. “He’s been able to make the change from a (pine) faller to a harvester. There’s probably only two or three people that have done that, most others just walked away from the job altogether,” he said. “And after Ash Wednesday, it was blokes like Peter in the forest with a chainsaw, cutting up big, black trees. It’s dangerous work and quite incredible, really.” But for Peter, any such praise is easily explained

away. “I just love it out here (in the forest) and I love my job. I’m just the old man of the forest,” he said. And as a selfconfessed chainsaw fanatic, Peter is one of few local people skilled enough to trim the large-diameter break trees too large to fit in head of a machine harvester. Working quickly and expertly along such a row in a freshly felled block near Kongorong, it’s obvious his skill and workmanship is still strong. But even at 65, Peter is not ready to let go of the job which has afforded him so much, both emotionally and financially. “I’ve always been a piece-worker. You work hard and you can earn as much money as you want out here,” he said. “The news reports doom and gloom, but there’s always plenty of work to be done and there will be for years and years to come. How long’s a piece of rope? I’ve enjoyed a lot of camaraderie over the years. I’ve worked with a lot of good blokes and always got along with the bosses. I’m very lucky.” And the feeling is mutual, according to Fennell Forestry managing director Wendy Fennell. “Peter’s skill and experience is unequalled. He’s a very valued employee and a true mentor for so many of us (at Fennell Forestry). He’s taught me a thing or two over the years,” she said. “For our sake, we hope to have him around for a long time yet.”

Finances in Focus Advertorial - GIA - Season impacts on insurance

End of financial year checklist

If you’re a farmer or primary producer, you may have been following the Bureau of Metrology’s (BOM) reporting on the El Nino climate indicators. The BOM is reporting that the thresholds for the El Nino indicators have been exceeded for close to two months. As a farmer or primary producer, you may find this alarming as El Nino is usually associated with below-average winter and spring rainfall and aboveaverage temperatures. The risk of drought and bushfire increases. The Insurance industry also follow the El Nino climate event very closely given that the bushfire season becomes more active and warmer conditions can effect crop development, which in turn leaves crops vulnerable to late-season frosts. Vineyard owners and managers would be well aware that late season frosts can influence the productivity of vines for several seasons into the future and that crop loss can be significant. At General Insurance Agencies (GIA) our brief is to understand your business or farm operations, including those events that have significant impact on your industry like El Nino and investigate the risk exposures. We tailor an insurance program to best suit your needs. Your insurance program forms part of your overall risk management plan, and because your business or farm operations change, insurance

Top ten tips for end of financial year With the end of the financial year fast approaching, it’s time for small business owners to complete bookkeeping, tax returns for 2014-15 and begin planning for 2015-16. Putting the hard work in now can help you get your business organised and work smarter in the year ahead. We have put together 10 essential tasks for your end of financial (EOFY) year to-do list. 1. Record keeping and compliance Some of your yearly responsibilities as a small business owner may include: Summarising income and expenses in a profit and loss statement. Conducting a stocktake. Summarising your record of debtors and creditors. Collating records of asset purchases or expenditure on improvements to assets to calculate depreciation expense claims and for capital gains tax purposes. Completing and lodge your income tax return. Lodging yearly reports or returns for PAYG withholding, fringe benefits tax (FBT), Goods and Services Tax (GST), and the taxable payments reporting system. Meeting SuperStream requirements. If you are unsure about your obligations, visit the Australian Tax Office (ATO) External Site website or call the ATO on 13 28 66.

is a dynamic process that requires regular review to ensure the most effective insurance strategy. GIA will assist you to identify insurable risk and the level of that risk, propose an effective insurance strategy to manage it and assist you to monitor and review it. GIA builds relationships with our clients, the insight we gain into your business or farm and your industry from that relationship is invaluable. It helps GIA to guide the Insurers understanding of your operations which in turn structures insurance strategies that are effective and comprehensive. If you would like a review of your insurable risk or your current insurance program please contact either Ruth Thami or Kate Brown who have 40 years of combined experience in the Industry and would be pleased to assist.

2. Find out what tax deductions you can claim Be sure to do your homework and know exactly what tax deductions you can claim. You may be able to claim deductions if your business: has set up a website has motor vehicle expenses uses diesel fuel is based at home has travel expenses uses machinery, tools or computers. The Government proposed changes to asset deductions as part of the Small Business and Jobs Package in the 2015-16 Budget. Once enacted by parliament External Site, you’ll be able to immediately depreciate any eligible asset costing less than $20,000 which you buy from 7.30pm on 12 May 2015 until 30 June 2017. This means you’ll be able to deduct the assets in the financial year in which you first use or install the asset. Read more about tax deductions you may claim or call the ATO on 13 28 66. 3. Use a registered tax agent Ensure your tax agent is registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) External Site. There’s no protection for taxpayers who use unregistered tax or Business Activity Statement (BAS) agents External Site. 4. Keep up to date with tax changes starting next financial year The Government announced a range

of other measures and changes as part of the Small Business and Jobs Package that you should keep up to date on. Many of them start next financial year, including: Tax breaks for small businesses that apply from 1 July 2015. Immediate deductions for professional services for costs relating to start a business. This change applies from the 2015-16 income year. Changes to FBT and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) to reduce red tape for small business. These changes apply from 1 July 2016. Read more about the Small Business and Jobs Package to find how it applies to you. 5. Be wary of tax refund scams There are a number of scams that target small business around tax time. Common tax time scams include: Tax refund scams where the scammer will claim you have overpaid your taxes and are entitled to a refund. However, in order for you to receive this refund, they will claim that you need to pay a fee for administration or transfer costs. Tax owed scams where the scammer will claim that you’ve underpaid your tax and will need to repay the amount you owe immediately. In order to make this payment, they may request your credit card or debit card details, or ask you to send money through a money transfer. Read more about scams targeting small business and how you can protect your business. 6. Review your finances Sit down with your accountant or bookkeeper and review your finances. Look at whether you met your targets last financial year and what you can do differently next financial year. Set performance targets for the year to help you stay on track. cont. opp. page

bowl. Toss to coat. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large, heavy-based, flameproof casserole dish over high heat. Cook shanks, turning, in batches, for 4 to 5 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Reduce heat to medium-high. Heat remaining oil in casserole. Add onion, rosemary and thyme. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until onion is tender. Add wine. Simmer for 1 minute. Stir in stock, sauce and jam. Season with pepper. Add shanks. Bring to the boil. Cover dish. Transfer to oven. Bake for 1 hour. Remove lid and baste shanks. Bake, uncovered, for 30 to 40 minutes or until meat is tender and falling from the bone. Serve with mash and beans.

A piece of equipment donated to Portland District Health will lead to improved monitoring of people with lung health problems. The new mobile spirometer equipment may be small but it packs an important function for people with asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other chronic illnesses. The equipment is one of the simplest but most effective measures of lung capacity and function. It costs nearly $5000 and was funded by United Way Glenelg. “By funding the purchase of the mobile spirometry equipment we will see more in-depth information passed on to patients with chronic illness in order for them to better manage their wellbeing,” United Way Glenelg Executive Officer Nicole Angelino said. It will be used in PDH’s health independence programs for diagnostic studies to assess airway obstruction and restriction and measure lung function. The new mobile device will be especially helpful for assisting clients in their own homes. More than 250 people are expected to use the mobile spirometer each year. PDH nurse unit manager of health independence programs, Donna Eichler, said the device could be used across all chronic illness programs. “We will be able to take the equipment to clients in their homes and provide service wherever it is needed,” Ms Eichler said. “Spirometry testing aids diagnosis, measures response to therapy, assesses disease progression and suitability for surgery, measures capacity for physical work and rehabilitation, and aids establishment of safe conditions in industry. It can be used for asthma diagnosis and management and for ongoing management of people with chronic lung diseases.” Mrs Eichler said the EasyOne model was a high quality piece of equipment that would help people to better self-manage their chronic conditions. Mrs Eichler said PDH staff were trained to use spirometry across health independence programs. It will be used by clients in PDH’s Hospital Admission Risk Program, pulmonary rehabilitation programs, on the acute ward, in exercise programs and in the community. “We can measure our pulmonary rehabilitation clients allowing our exercise physiologist to plan exercises for the most benefit,” she said. “It can also be used to assist our medical and nursing teams to gain a more accurate picture of lung conditions. This is a particularly useful piece of equipment and we are very grateful to United Way Glenelg for their support.”

Brad Rathjen returned home last week after participating in the 2015 Asia Pacific Team Camp, presented by Nike and the NBA. The invitees to this camp were the best junior basketballers from Australia, China, Chinese Taipei and New Zealand, born in 1998 or later. Rathjen rated the camp as an opportunity of a lifetime. He had a knowledge of most of the work done in the sessions, but found the USA terminology different and interesting. His talents were recognised and his efforts rewarded by his selection in one of the two All Star Teams of the camps, which played off at the conclusion of the program. Brad was joined by fellow Australian Gabe Hadley in the Red All Star team, which won the feature game, under the guidance of USA coach Thomas Scott. Two other Australians were in the opposing All Star Team. By Beth Serle
