Celebrating working dogs at the birthplace of the kelpie Australia’s biggest working dog festival – the 19th Clark Rubber Australian Kelpie Muster – kicks off in less than two weeks on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend – June 6 and 7 in Casterton, Victoria. The three-day event starts on Saturday morning with a Poet’s Breakfast and Kelpie Country Street Parade, when community groups and organisations, clubs, businesses display their floats in Casterton’s main street. But the main event for serious Kelpie folk will be the $8000 RMA Working Dog Futurity trial in the town’s main street, where dogs sold in previous auctions will vie for the highest prize money of any working dog event in Australia. The winner takes home $4000, second place gets $2000 and third place $1000. The vendor of the winning dog also receives $1000. In 2012, Matthew Johnson’s dog ‘Tom’ won the first RMA Network Working Dog Trial which became the Futurity. He then sold ‘Tom’ for the record price of $12,000 at

the 2012 auction. Last year, James Ridgway took home $6000 in the futurity, winning $4,000 with Kelpie Eddie purchased for $1500 at 2013 auction and then pocketing another $2000 for coming second with Karana Tack. The Stockman’s Challenge is also held on Saturday and is a serious test of skill by the rider, stockhorse and working dog working sheep through an obstacle course and into a yard. This event has a strong following among serious stockmen and women, and is a display of superior stock handling skills. Saturday also has a full program of novelty events for owners and dogs vying for the King of the Kelpies title – accruing points in the Kelpie Hill Climb, Kelpie High Jump and Kelpie Dash, also known as the Kelpie Triathlon. Other events on Saturday including the Kelpie Idol for the good looking dogs, Kelpie Pinball where you will see ducks

being rounded up and Mutton Mayhem, where the fastest sheep with their mock jockey wins. There will also be a wildlife display, shearing demonstrations and a variety of activities and novelties for everyone to participate in -- like six and 11-legged races, dog most like it’s owner, egg/spoon and the fattest dog. cont. page 4

FROM PAGE 3 On Sunday at Island Park, organisers hold Australia’s premier Clark Rubber Working Dog Auction, in conjunction with the RMA Network, with live working dog demonstrations from 9am and selling starting at 3pm. Strathkellar Kelpie breeder Ian O’Connell sold the top-priced dog at last year’s auction when full-trained 22-month-old Bagalla Coke sold for $10,000 to Lillimur mixed farmer Mark Williams. The auction attracts people from all over Australia looking for their next trusty four-legged worker among the dogs demonstrated by local and nationally-acclaimed breeders of working Kelpies. Last year 50 dogs sold for an average of just over $3000, with started dogs making from $500 to $4500, proving the auction caters for buyers at all price levels. Bids are fielded by the RMA Network auctioneers. On Monday, June 8, the Casterton Kelpie program winds up with the working dog school which will be hosted by renowned working dog trainer Matthew Johnson, who runs the Pandara

Kelpie Stud with his wife Margie. Matthew has won several Tasmanian Yard Dog Championships, has represented Tasmania at the Australian Yard Dog Championships and is a renowned trainer and vendor at our Clark Rubber Working Dog Auction. Throughout the festival, entries in the Acquisitive Art Competition can be seen in the Casterton Town Hall. The winners among the fabulous kelpie related artworks will be announced in the hall on Thursday evening June 4. Renowned wildlife artist, Jason Roberts, will be judging the Acquisitive Art Competition and displaying some of his work. All enquiries Casterton Kelpie Association secretary, Linda Thompson on 0488 791 424 or visit the website www.kelpies-casterton.org

Gael and Ingrid Chizungu, together with their mother Chantal Bashibirira, were joined by Wattle Range Mayor Peter gandolfi for a citizenship ceremony earlier this month. Their ceremony took place in the Millicent Public Library History Room. Chantal moved to Millicent seven years ago from Congo with her two young daughters where she meet up with her husband Delphin Chizungu. Delphin had gained his Australian Citizenship prior having moved to Millicent and finding work in aged care. The young family have settled into life at Millicent and have extended their family with their young son Faustin, who is now four.

One of those rare performers with a gift, a presence, Dewayne simply tells his story to a crowded room and you will feel he is singing just to you. He can’t explain it and he’s not consciously trying to; it’s just there, it’s just him. Dewayne has supported and played with some of our most revered rockers, the likes of Gurrumul Yunupingu, Archie Roach, John Farnham and Guy Sebastian. He has wowed crowds with the Black Arm Band and even sung a duet with Paul Kelly.

LOCAL SOUTHERN GRAMPIANS IN FOCUS More than 225 people provided their details to Southern Grampians Shire Council representatives during the recent three-day Regional Victoria Living Expo in Melbourne, requesting more information to assist with possible relocation plans. Southern Grampians Shire’s Economic Development and Tourism Unit staff were supported at this year’s event by Several Councillors, representatives from the Hamilton Regional Business Association (HRBA) and local industry representatives. Economic Development and Tourism Manager Hugh Koch, said employment opportunities and lifestyle possibilities were high topics of interest from visitors. “A safe and affordable lifestyle that allowed more time to spend with family was expressed as a key driver for change, whether from young professionals, families or retirees. People were also seeking reassurance that education and health systems were well and truly in place to support the lifestyle, once job opportunities became available”, Mr Koch said. All those who registered their details were contacted by Council and sent a ‘Passport” for the Greater Hamilton Open Weekend, taking place on June 20 and 21 and will enjoy free tours, local footy derby, a country race meet, employment networking opportunities plus dozens of special deals on accommodation, food and attractions.

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Brie & mushroom risotto 1 tablespoon olive oil 60g unsalted butter 2 leeks, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped rosemary leaves, plus extra leaves to serve 1 1/3 cups (295g) Arborio Rice 100ml white wine 3 cups (750ml) gluten-free vegetable stock, heated 100ml pure (thin) cream 300g chestnut mushrooms 150g brie, torn

Boost for mental health

Method Place oil and half the butter in a pan over medium-low heat. Cook leek, garlic and half the rosemary, stirring, for 6-8 minutes until soft. Add rice, stirring to coat grains, then add wine and simmer for 1-2 minutes or until almost evaporated. Stir in stock, a ladleful at a time, allowing each to be absorbed before adding the next. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, for 20 minutes or until al dente (you may not need all the stock). Stir in cream and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until warmed through. Melt remaining 30g butter in a pan over high heat. Cook mushrooms and remaining rosemary for 6-8 minutes or until mushrooms are golden. Season. Serve risotto immediately, topped with mushrooms, brie and rosemary leaves.

Mental health services in the South East are set to expand when the new Mount Gambier Integrated Mental Health Inpatient Unit opens on Monday, June 29. Acting Director, Mental Health, Strategic Operations, Nicole Jones, said the unit was originally scheduled to open in April, however this date had been revised to ensure the most appropriate staff mix is in place to treat patients. “For the first time, the South East will have a six-bed, specialist, acute mental health inpatient unit located at Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service,” Nicole Jones said. “While we have been largely successful in recruiting to the 15 new mental health positions this unit brings to the South East, there remain some key appointments to be made. “We anticipate recruitment will be finalised in the coming months and this will ensure we can start accepting patients into the new unit from Monday, June 29. “This is an exciting service for the South East community, bringing a new level of mental health care to the region and enabling inpatient and community based mental health clinicians to work together as an integrated team. A regional mental health unit will mean more people can receive acute mental health care in or near their home town, reducing the need to travel to Adelaide. It will also allow those people who do require a higher level of care in a metropolitan facility to return to the South East earlier and recover with their families and friends by their side. Integrated Mental Health Inpatient Units have been running successfully in Whyalla and the Riverland since last year, treating more than 200 patients from across country South Australia, and we fully expect the Mount Gambier unit to be just as successful. Changing the start date of the unit has not been an easy decision, but we believe it is necessary to ensure we have a full complement of mental health experts working in the unit, guaranteeing the highest quality of care possible. We thank the South East community for their patience as we finalise the recruitment process in preparation for the June opening.” The six-bed Mount Gambier Integrated Mental Health Inpatient Unit is designed for people who are currently living in the community but need a higher level of mental health support or who may be returning to the region following care in Adelaide. The unit has been specifically designed with country people in mind, including open indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as the privacy of individual bedrooms with ensuites. The implementation of IMHIUs in country South Australia was identified as part of the Stepping Up: A Social Inclusion Action Plan for Mental Health Reform 2007-2012 report. The State Government has invested more than $300 million to improve SA’s mentalhealth services and infrastructure, in response to recommendations made in the Stepping Up Report.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Big problems... by Robbie Tansel Sometimes I feel sorry for Tony Abbott. Being Tony Abbott is not an easy job. Then I think of South African president Jacob Zuma and I think, “Things could be worse, Tony.” I’ve spoken about president Zuma before but I’ll refresh your memory just in case you’ve forgotten. Jacob Zuma is a polygamist. A polygamist of course is a person who believes in the idea of men having more than one wife at the same time. They call that polygamy; I call that the definition of ambitious. As most men are aware, keeping one woman happy is difficult enough. Anything more than that is just asking for trouble. We are only men, not magicians. Throw in the fact that you’re the president and think about the potential issues you’re going to confront. To begin with, who gets to be first lady? How do you make that decision? Is it based on seniority? A spirited game of paper, rock, scissors? If it was me, I’d want it to be decided fairly. I’m thinking some sort of a points based competition. You know, something like the Miss America competition combined with the Olympic decathlon. Think about all of the qualities you’d look for in a first lady and then make the ladies compete against each other for the honour. An evening gown round. Some sort of quiz on world leaders. A quiz on etiquette on formal occasions. A one hundred metre sprint, just because it would be entertaining to watch. I suspect that if you had a competition, instead of being a friendly competition participated in with good spirit like I described above,

it’d be a lot more like the Hunger Games except with more hair pulling and bitchy comments. Can you imagine having several wives and one of them has been selected as your number one? You’re going to have some pretty unhappy and vindictive ladies to deal with. I don’t know about you, but I’d be pretty careful with what I eat. There are definitely going to be some issues to deal with. Even worse is likely to come. For a little while, they’re likely to be competing with and bitchy with each other. It’s not going to take long for them to decide they have a shared enemy and it’s not any of them. It’s their president/husband. Once they work this out, you’re going to be dealing with a coordinated attack from your wives. They are going to work together and make your life miserable. Having more than one wife doesn’t seem so great now, does it? You’ll never be able to argue your point with one of them. The others are certain to take her side. Any good husband knows he never wins an argument against his wife, and that’s without a couple of her friends who happen to live in the house and will bring up all of their issues! I’ve been thinking about how you could deal with this issue and the only way you’d be able to do it is by making the position of first lady an ongoing competition. Attach a relegation system to the first lady competition and maybe you’d be able to keep them at each other instead of teaming up against you. If one of your wives couldn’t afford to argue with you (despite the fact she’s no doubt correct) because it would lose her points and make her relegation from first lady to second lady likely, you might be able to keep as much control as a man ever has in a marriage As if multiple wives isn’t difficult enough for President Zuma, the silly poopol (Afrikaans term of endearment) Are you frustrated by having your has an estimated twenty future in the hands of people you’ve children. LOCAL Life saving efforts from Portland health workers Hilary Saunders says she wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for the medical care she received in Portland after suffering a severe asthma attack and cardiac arrest. Ms Saunders has been a lifelong asthmatic but said the attack at home on April 29 “was the worst episode I ever had” and led to her cardiac arrest. “It was horrible,” she said. “It wasn’t like a normal asthma attack; it was like there was just no air. I couldn’t breathe in or out…it was so scary. “Because I couldn’t get any air to the heart I had the cardiac arrest.” The pressure had been building during the day. “I’d been sick for a while and said that afternoon that I thought I needed go to hospital. My partner Kevin Clarke said he’d move the car closer to the door but by the time he came back I said my lungs had stopped working and he needed to call an ambulance. Pretty soon after that I collapsed.” Mr Clarke performed CPR and called the ambulance. Paramedics were quick to arrive and also performed CPR before taking Ms Saunders to Portland District Health where she was stabilised and then airlifted to St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne due to the severity of her condition. After the cardiac arrest, Ms Saunders remembers very little about the incident, but realises the high level of local care saved her life. “The people at St Vincent’s were singing the praises of everyone in Portland. They said if it wasn’t for Portland I wouldn’t

be here,” she said. “I’ve been in hospital with asthma before but never anything like that. There was just no air,” she said. “The paramedics, doctors, nurses and allied health staff at PDH worked efficiently, professionally and with great care and compassion as a team to save my life. My partner tells me everyone was fabulous.” Ms Saunders, who is about to turn 60, admits she hasn’t been taking proper care of her asthma, but she’s learned her lesson. “I’ve always been in too much of a hurry to do stuff I enjoy doing,” she said.Ms Saunders has made one major change since the attack. “I stopped smoking,” she said “I blame myself a lot; I should never have smoked in the first place and should have given up years ago.” Ms Saunders said she hopes to use her experience to educate fellow Aboriginal people and the wider community about the risks of smoking and the need to take better care of

your health. “I’d encourage anyone to give up smoking. It’s the hardest thing in the world to do but it’s worth it. “I’d been saying for ages I wasn’t going to buy any more cigarettes. I’d have one and wouldn’t even enjoy it, but I’d still go back. I’m not a big smoker, but one cigarette is too many.” Now Ms Saunders is just thankful to have a second chance.

“On behalf of my family and myself I’d like to express publicly our thanks and gratitude. Words seem insufficient but I think Portland should be aware of the level of commitment and service available in our community through PDH and Ambulance Victoria. “You drive past the hospital all the time but unless you use the service you don’t really know what’s there and how

good they are.” PDH Nurse Unit Manager – Emergency, Debbie Tozer, said it was a “true emergency services team effort” to save Ms Saunders. “Had the paramedics not worked so hard and efficiently at the scene she may never have made it to PDH,” Ms Tozer said. “Then it was a great effort by the Emergency Department nursing and medical staff to follow up their work. It was great to see such a positive outcome.” PDH has a community nurse who can offer asthma education and quit smoking support. PDH’s Hospitals Admission Risk Program (HARP) team can take on care coordination for people with chronic lung conditions to assist with signs and symptom management and action plans. Nurse Unit Manager Health Independence Programs, Donna Eichler, said this enables people to selfmanage their condition better and know how to recognise and act on changing symptoms.

Volunteers from all walks of life at South East Animal Welfare League The South East Animal Welfare League is very excited to welcome Mount Gambier Pioneers basketball player Tyrone Lee as a new member of their wonderful team of volunteers. The Detroit native has had a love of animals – from rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs – since he was a young boy and has come on board to help provide a safe, loving and temporary home for all the animals in our care. “I felt that while I was in Mount Gambier I could help out with the community and I really enjoy coming out to the SEAWL and spending time with the animals,” Tyrone said. The South East Animal Welfare League is always on the lookout for passionate volunteers, who can help provide one-on-one socialisation, behaviour training and enrichment to the hundreds of lost, abandoned and mistreated dogs and cats that call the SEAWL home each year. “The number of people that volunteer at the South East Animal Welfare League is not enough and it would definitely be better to have more people involved to care for the animals out here,” Tyrone said. If you would like to join Tyrone and volunteer with the SEAWL, simply visit http://seawl. thelimestonecoast.com. au and download our volunteer form.

SEABL Pioneers secure critical cleansweep They didn’t have it all their own way but the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers have walked away from the weekend with two critical victories – a comfortable win over the lowly ranked Kilsyth Cobras at the Icehouse on Friday night ahead of a nailbiting one point thriller over Bendigo on the road in what was skipper Matt Sutton’s 150th game as a Pioneer. Friday night’s victory was expected but it did take the Pioneers more than a half to shake off the Cobras. The opening half was a defensive stoush with four points the biggest margin of the opening stanza, which the home side enjoyed with just over three minutes to play, when Damian Johnson wowed the crowd with a dunk. But the Cobras were unfazed and rallied for a three point lead late in the quarter but it was the Pioneers leaders that shone threw in the dying minutes as the skipper Sutton (pictured) found Erik Burdon unguarded and the three point specialist does what he does best, with Sutton then following that up by hitting two free throws to ensure scores were locked away at the first change. It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Cobras refused to allow the Pioneers to take control of the contest. With six minuted to play, the Pioneers worked their way to a game high five point buffer, when Tyrone Lee pulled in a defensive rebound and then received a great pass from Sutton to make it count at the other end with a sweet two point jumper. That same Sutton-Lee combination again combined a couple of minutes later to extend the lead to seven points as Sutton secured the defensive board and then found Lee on the break for a crowd pleasing dunk. The Cobras wouldn’t go away though and by the half time break, the Pioneers’ lead was only three points. It was Erik Burdon and Brad Hill that decided enough was enough after the half time break and midway through the third quarter, the duo started to hit the scoreboard regularly. Burdon scored 10 of his 19 points in this quarter, with Hill making seven of his 10 in the championship quarter and by the final change, the lead was a more comfortable 14 points. Burdon started the final quarter with another three – he hit five for the match – and when Sutton his a three with four and a half minutes to play, the Pioneers enjoyed a game high 29 point lead and while the match was well and truly over, the Cobras did come again and in the end, the final scoreline saw a 24 point win to the home side. Lee top scored with 23 points, while Johnson was also pivotal with his 12 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks. And while the first half of Friday night was an arm wrestle, the entire match had that feel on Saturday night as the Pioneers took on Bendigo on the Braves’ home pine. It was a seesawing opening stanza with no more than three points separating the two teams until Brad Hill hit a trademark mid range jumper to extend the visitors’ lead to five points with three minutes to play and when Sutton and Burdon combined to open up a shot from beyond the arc for Burdon, the lead was eight which was where it stayed by the first change. The Braves rallied strongly in the second quarter and for the final four minutes of

the second term, the Pioneers couldn’t buy a basket and only a buzzer beating three pointer from Burdon ensured the half time deficit for the Pioneers was only one point. Tom Daly started to have an impact in the third with some crucial rebounds at both ends of the floor, as well as a three point special to push the Pioneers lead out to six points before it settled back at four points heading into the last. The Pioneers extended that advantage to as many as 10 points when Brad Hill hit a three with five minutes to play. And when Johnson followed that play up with a trademark block the next time the Braves went down the floor, it felt like the Pioneers were set to get the job done at both ends of the floor. But again the radar when off with the Pioneers shooting whereas the Braves had no such trouble, heading on an 8-0 run that saw them reduce the deficit to only two points. With 19 seconds to play, the home side hit the front for the first time in the final stanza but the Pioneers were not don with yet and Lee hit a clutch jump shot with six seconds on the clock to give his team a one point lead. The Braves did have time to conjure one more shot but it didn’t fall, handing Sutton, the dual South Conference winning skipper and reigning national championship captain, the perfect result to celebrate his 150th appearance as a Pioneer. Local Sport HOCKEY - State representative share their experience in their own words. Jared Armour

Finn Johnson

Redbacks Hockey Club’s Jared Armour has recently returned home from the Australian Under 18 Men’s Hockey Championship in Melbourne after gaining much experience by playing against the best hockey players in Australia. Although not the result the team had wished for, South Australia finished the nine day championship in eighth position after going down to New South Wales in the playoff with a 7-0 loss. South Australia started the competition in Pool A and finished the tournament with two wins, one against Northern Territory 4-2 and Victoria (2), 3-0. With South Australia winning just two games, Jared described each of the games as being very close but at crucial times during the game the team lost focus which allowed the opposition to take control and score goals. Jared played the majority of the tournament as a key attacking midfielder and along with Naracoorte’s Rams and State teammate in Lauchlan Busiko, both South East boys worked impressively throughout each game to be amongst South Australia’s best hockey players. With moving to Adelaide to attend university in 2016, the future for Jared looks bright as he will be looking to pursue his hockey career with gaining a position within the Premier League Competition and then look towards fulfilling his ambition to keep improving his hockey.

Finn was a part of the under 15 Boys SA State team that competed in Hobart last month. Finn and the team played seven games over the championship and won four games and lost three, with their best win against NT with a 7-1 scoreline. The teams biggest loss was against WA Black which was a 4 nil loss. However with the way the draw was arranged the team played WA Black a second time and defeated them 3 - 1 which was a great improvement. SA finished ninth out of 12 teams. Finn thoroughly enjoyed playing at the National Championships and he loved being able to further develop his hockey by being coached by two Adelaide Premier League players, Todd Kitto and Joel Langley. Finn also enjoyed his time with his teammates with half of the team being country based players.

SOUTH EAST TENNIS SENIORS South Australia tennis seniors held its annual State teams carnival in Berri earlier this month, attracting 95 teams. Six South East tennis players competed in the three day carnival. The ladies Twilight team consisted of Trish Douglas, Helen Rathjen, Trish Guerin, Wendy MacDonald, Marg Moffatt, Bronwyn Neill and they finished runners-up in the 50-plus age group

Morgan Cooper During my time at the Under 18 National Championships which were held in Adelaide, we only won one of our seven games. At the championships there were 10 teams so we were divided into two pools. In our pool we had Queensland, Victoria Blue, Tasmania and NSW Blues. We also had to play a crossover game against Victoria White from Pool B which was the game we won. We also played two classification matches against the ACT and the Northern Territory. I played all of my games in a defensive role which I really enjoyed. I loved learning new game plans, different structures and playing against other teams who had fantastic skills which provided us with some spectacular hockey to watch. I also enjoyed playing with the SA girls who were all easy to get along with and very supportive of each other.

Dayton Thomas Dayton Thomas has recently returned from the Under 15 Boys Australian Championships held in Hobart last month. The competition consisted of 12 teams and the SA team played seven games in all, winning four of those and losing three. Dayton shared goalkeeping duties and was a standout, conceding only three goals for the entire tournament. Despite the positive win/loss record the structure of the tournament meant that the team came in ninth. This was Dayton’s second year playing goalie for SA under 15 boys and now at top age he moves on to trying out for under 18 boys. Dayton is ready to play club hockey again and the zone challenge coming up in June which presents another challenge as hewill be playing as a field player not as a goalie.

Cody Lewis After numerous weekend trips to Adelaide during the off-season for state trainings, I headed to the Gold Coast last month to represent South Australia in the National Under 15 Girls Hockey Championships. The SA team played seven games. Match days included an early morning team walk and pre match team meeting in the morning as well as a meeting in the evening that reflected on the team’s performance of that day’s game. We had ice baths after each match to reduce the risk of muscle soreness and injuries. The SA results: SA defeated ACT 3-0 ; SA lost to QLD2 0-4; SA drew with VIC2 3-3; SA defeated NT 2-0; SA defeated TAS 6-0; SA defeated NT 6-0 and then defeated Tasmania 6-1 to claim ninth position in the championship. I had a great time during my trip, making lots of new friends and learning new skills and positional play. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about trying out for any team to do it with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Even if you aren’t successful in making the team, there are lots of other things you can take from the experience that will make you a better and stronger player and person overall.

MILLICENT 2-4-2 COMPETITION Landmark Millicent hosted the 2-4-2 competition at the Millicent Bowling Club last Thursday 21st May. The contest attracted 38 bowlers and despite the early rain, the competition started on time. An impressive 34+19 saw the team of Ed Fitter and Derk Pietersma (pictured right) take home the prize money with runners-up Glenn Brown and Faye Hill close behind with 34+10. Merle Stevens and Bruce Pettman with 33+9 and 62.9% took third place away from Ella Pietersma and Phil Dowdell who had the same score 33+9 and 61.5%. The other winning teams were Clive Stevens and Graham Parsons (32+18, Norman Peart and Adriana Ross (32+14), Judy Lowe and Alan Correll (31+10), Colin Pye and Ian Ross (31+5) and Jim Campbell and Carl Schapel (29+4). lifestyle1.net | 29

Top sommeliers toast Wrattonbully’s appeal The Wrattonbully wine region on South Australia’s Limestone Coast has been praised for its quality wines and unique sense of place after last week’s visit of highly influential Australian sommeliers. Ten guests representing some of the country’s best restaurants gained a close-up view of the region’s unique geology by delving deep beneath a vineyard during an underground tour of Schultz Cave. Members of the SIP (Sommelier Immersion Program) Tour organised by Wine Australia were also given a comprehensive insight into the importance of the soils of Wrattonbully by geologist and Peppertree Wines owner John Davis, with a structured tasting at Pavy Wines and dinner at Struan House capping off the day. Sydney’s Quay Restaurant assistant head sommelier, Shanteh Wong, said she enjoyed visiting a region “steeped in community and commonality for quality wines from low yielding exceptional vines”. “I was lucky enough to be able to taste the past and recent vintages of many producers and I’m impressed and excited about the Wrattonbully’s future; not only for Bordeaux varietals but for new and diverse white varietals too,” she said. “My time spent in Wrattonbully and exploring their cave systems and soil profiles gave me a unique sense of place in an already developed and promising region.” Wrattonbully Wine Region Association president, James Freckleton, says the visit was a valuable opportunity to build on the region’s profile. “We’re always working hard to share our story, but the sommeliers are also looking for the stories to tell, so if they get to see it all first hand, it’s a win-win for everybody,” he said. “They’re the ones talking direct to the consumer about our wines and our story, and that’s the best marketing that we can get, but introductions like this also create great future inroads for our producers, as the sommeliers can relate to the area. They were a great group, and we would like to think that they will become ambassadors for Wrattonbully.” Guests on the SIP Trip represented venues in the running to win the Wine Australia-sponsored Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Wine List of the Year award for ‘Best Australian Representation’. “This was first time to Wrattonbully for all but one of the sommeliers and they were blown away by the sense of community in the region, the quality of the wine and the hospitality of the regions’ producers,” said Wine Australia’s regional director Aaron Brasher. “The sommeliers had a chance to hear many wonderful stories of the Wrattonbully region and these stories will be shared when they return to their restaurants.” Mr Brasher said the opportunity to spend time in Wrattonbully exploring the soils, aspects and vineyard sites was an invaluable experience that helped them to grasp the history of the region. “They all walked away from the experience armed with greater knowledge of why certain varieties work so well in the region and the wine styles and clones they should keep an eye on in the future,” he said. “This trip has helped Wrattonbully become a region that this group of top sommeliers from across the country will always remember and it will encourage them to keep Wrattonbully wines top of mind when they’re looking for new wines to serve to their diners.”

LOCAL Former winner returns as Kelpie Art prize judge Internationally celebrated painter Jason Roberts will be the feature artist at this year’s Clark Rubber Australian Kelpie Muster at Casterton. Roberts won the Kelpie Art Prize last year with his painting Sitting Back, and will spend the weekend of the muster demonstrating his painting techniques for visitors. Roberts will be based at The Town Hall, where about 20 of his paintings — featuring Australian farming themes, including the celebrated western district — will also be on display and available for purchase from the

Friday until the Sunday of the weekend. “I will be bringing three paintings of the Casterton township alone,” Roberts said. “There is so much character in the town; the main street has so many beautiful buildings and old timber, which is wonderful to paint.” Roberts will also be bringing a painting of the Australian Lighthorse — Knee to Knee, Horse to Horse — which was inspired by the Gallipoli Centenary and is also a tribute to his great grandfather who served in the Australian Lighthorse. “I’ve also got a lot of my favourite sheep breeds, including

Merinos, Corriedales, Border Leicesters and some Black Faced Sheep from my travels in Scotland to display,” he said. Roberts will also be judging this year’s Kelpie Art Prize, which attracts entrants from all over Australia. In addition to his overseas work for The Sultan of Oman and The Maharaja of Jodhpur, Roberts has completed numerous commissions of Victorian cattle, sheep, horses and working dogs. “Kelpies are among the most fascinating dogs to paint because they are so intense and have great poses,” Roberts said. “I also love the fact that they were developed in Victoria to work the land, and over generations have proven to be one of the finest working dogs in the world.” The Casterton Kelpie Muster is held every Queen’s Birthday long weekend and features a Working Dog Auction on the Sunday. There is also the everpopular Kelpie High

Hino celebrates 50 years in style

a 716 Hybrid, a 717 Crew Tipper and a 921 Auto fitted with a range of Hino Genuine accessories. The 716 Hybrid on display came from the TNT Australia fleet - which operates the largest hybrid truck fleet in Australia with a total of 54 vehicles. The 921 Auto is the safest and most powerful light duty truck on the market, while the 717 Crew Tipper showcased just one example of Hino’s ever-popular Built to Go models. The 700 Series range was represented on the stand by an FS 2848 ProShift 16 AMT tipper. The accessorised 921 Auto demonstrated the value of two innovative new Hino Genuine accessories. The Hino Lane Change Visual Assist system enhances driver awareness of the vehicle’s potential blind spots on either side when changing lanes. It displays the side view images on the multimedia unit when the turning indicator is applied. The Hino DVR dash cam with 5.0 megapixel front camera and 2.0 megapixel rear camera records driving footage in high definition with two channels. It is Android/iOS supported, GO THE DISTANCE and also features a digital zoom and parking monitoring. Hino’s stand also featured a vintage Hino KL 300 from 1970, providing an example of the durability of Hino trucks going back to the earliest vehicles sold in the country. The KL 300 has covered over 1.6 million kilometres in its lifetime while remaining in good condition. It is equipped with an EC 100 engine that develops 88kW and 298Nm of torque. Hino’s ‘One Toyota’ For the full lighting range visit alliance was also www.peaklighting.com.au acknowledged with the addition of a Huski skid-steer loader and Graham Road, a Toyota forklift from Mount Gambier Toyota Material Handling Ph: (08) 8723 0311 equipment.

Hino Australia has continued the celebrations marking its 50th anniversary in Australia at the Brisbane Truck Show. The Hino stand was opened to the media and general public following a ceremonial birthday cake-cutting and a speech from Hino Australia Chairman and CEO Steve Lotter outlining Hino’s achievements, innovative high-quality products and the strong relationships formed during its 50 years in the country. The latest addition to Hino’s model line-up - The 500 Series FE Auto in new wheelbase variants - made its first major public appearance on the Hino stand. The FE Auto was launched in response to growing customer demand for ‘two pedal’ trucks. An FM 2630 Auto was also on display. Hino’s popular 300 Series light duty models were represented by

New Isuzu N Series promises bright future for Australia’s truck market leader Following the recent achievement of 26 consecutive years of Australian truck market leadership, Isuzu Trucks shows no sign of slowing down with the release of its newly enhanced N Series range. The highly-anticipated product updates build on the solid suite of specifications that have brought Isuzu’s N series to the forefront of Australia’s light duty truck market segment. The new range now offers optimised safety features, class-leading power and torque in certain models, and a refined cab face featuring new badging and nomenclature. Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) Chief Operating Officer, Phil Taylor, said the new 2015 N Series faultlessly rounds out Australia’s most popular truck range. “The N series has been a major contributor to IAL’s achievement of 26 years of market leadership, offering Australia a class-leading engine and driveline, carlike comfort, superior safety features and a breadth of range that is second to none,” Mr Taylor said. “In addition to the most comprehensive safety features

available on the N Series to date, the 2015 range also features wider availability of the 190 PS (140 kW) 5.2 litre 4HKI engine. “This engine is also available in the driver’s licence category NPR 45-190 and boasts a massive 27 per cent power advantage over automatic equipped competitor models. “These models will also be very attractive to tradespeople, with the Isuzu offering more power and torque in a car driver’s licence rated vehicle than most diesel-powered utilities currently on market in Australia, and with a genuine two-tonne payload when fitted with an aluminium tray.” Isuzu’s proven success at harnessing cutting-edge technology for a more powerful, intelligent and safer truck range is demonstrated once again with the introduction of Isuzu Electronic Stability Control

(IESC) on most of the new N series models. “Electronic stability control utilises data from various sensors on the vehicle to determine possible loss of control, automatically controlling the vehicle if necessary by adjusting engine torque and braking individual wheels,” Mr Taylor said. The enhanced safety credentials of the Isuzu N Series will be further bolstered by improvements to suspension seat and alternator, and driveline adjustments to NNR and NPR models for greater momentum and superior handling. With well over 90,000 N series trucks sold to date, Mr Taylor believes the latest and safest incarnation of Australia’s most popular truck will cement Isuzu’s stronghold in the light duty sector for years to come. “The demand for light duty trucks that fulfil a multitude of roles in providing essential support and services in our cities will only amplify with the increase of urban migration in years to come. “With the new N series range, Isuzu offers a benchmark vehicle that excels in safety, performance, and comfort – setting a strong precedent for intelligent light duty trucks of the future.”

The working companion of choice for transport professionals, the new vehicle is presented as being convenient and practical to use as a light van, whilst continuing to offer the maximum reliability, efficiency and versatility that have always made the Daily a reference point for the sector. While 80% of components have been redesigned, the New Daily has preserved its classic ladder frame chassis structure, which has long been a key part of its DNA and ensures its sturdiness, versatility and durability over time, including maximum bodybuilding flexibility for chassis cab versions. The capacity of the van has been strongly enhanced by revising the ratio between wheelbase, total length and the carrying length: this led to the creation of the new 18 and 20 m3 models

(offering the best load space in their category) and the 10.8 m3 version (the best in its category for load efficiency, an indicator that measures the ratio between the length of the load compartment and the total length of the vehicle). Thanks to the new architecture, with longer wheelbases and reduced rear overhang, the New Daily guarantees excellent driveability without compromising its consolidated agility in confined spaces. The combination of the new front and rear suspension systems, and the new longer wheelbases for the van produce a dynamic, category-leading performance in terms of safety and stability. The third generation of the Daily is also focused on business requirements and Depot at 33 Williams Rd, Millicent • Email: geoff@teaglecontracting.com.au offers a considerable reduction in fuel consumption Web: www.teaglecontracting.com.au compared with the previous model, with a significant improvement in vehicle running costs, together with the best performance in the category offering a wide range of engines, transmissions and axle ratios. But that is not all: the comfort of the vehicle has also been greatly improved. The driver of the New Daily can benefit from a more comfortable and quieter interior compartment that guarantees the driving position and sensations typical of a premium automobile, as well as a multitude of closed and open storage compartments. The ergonomic design of the controls is at the top of its category, the sound insulation has been improved, the air conditioning system is more efficient and driving comfort 2XU WHDP KDV WKH FRPELQHG H[SHULHQFH WR DGYLVH VXSSO\ DQG ÀW DQ\ EDWWHU\ IRU DQ\ XVH 3RZHU LV RXU EXVLQHVV is excellent in all load conditions.

Motor TERANG SCHOOL REUNION ON HORIZON Former Terang High School students from as far away as Queensland will be returning to the town on the June long weekend for a 40-year reunion. The Year 9 class of 1975, going under the banner `old 55’ to coincide with their age group, will be holding a reunion over the weekend that will include a dinner and a tour of their old school. It is the first time in 30 years that the students have come together for a reunion. Many of the students will live in the area but others are returning from Melbourne, across Victoria and interstate. “We have one former student driving down from Queensland to see his old school mates,” one of the organisers, Faye Croxford (nee Warren) said. Many of the former school friends have reunited on Facebook but Ms Croxford said they hoped to find others who have lost touch. “This might be a onceonly chance to come together with your old school mates and talk about the good times we had back in the 70s,” she said. If anyone has relatives who went to the school during this era we would be happy to hear from them.” The Year 9 group was chosen as the base for the reunion because many students moved to the high school from St Thomas’ after Year 8. Ms Croxford can be contacted on 0403 163 217 or people can contact co-organisers Rick Bayne on 0418 140 489 or Doug Pollard 0419 514 702.

tyre loosing valuable time and only completed 75% of the race distance, that classifies them as a finisher and a win for the Super 1650 class. The trophy was payment for all their hard work in the shed repairing damage after a big roll over at Moorex last year. Eighth outright went to the Sportsman buggy of Glen Wilkinson and Peter Errington and the cloud of smoke that followed the very tired motor. Seventh outright place went to the ever reliable Extreme 4WD of Kingsley Weedon and shared navigators Ray Hobbs and Chloe Moore, who fueled up again and went rallying that night. Sixth outright went to the Pro Lite of Jimmy Stewart and Wendy Ogden racing all day and thankfully getting their flat tyre in the pits. Fourth and fifth outright was a close battle that has gone on at other events, with Brenton and James Davey being over powered in their Performance 2WD yellow tin top by the Sportsman buggy of Shaun Klingberg and Jake Douglass. The Extreme 2WD of Andy Murdoch and Tyson Proud crossed the line in third outright, proving that the Razorback trophy truck is becoming more of a threat in the off road scene. The battle of the day was for first and second, coming down to the wire with only nine seconds between them at the finish. After 140 kilometers, Garry Turnbull and Chris Proud narrowly took the victory over the Pro class buggy of Daniel Lamb and Daniel Harris. The Millicent Sand Buggy Club would like to thank the land owners, sponsors and officials for making it a great day.

The dirt flies at Mumbannar There was perfect weather for great off road racing, with 18 competitors eager to start and carve up the dirt of Mumbannar in the Millicent Sand Buggy Club Mumbannar Off Road Challange. As the flag dropped Trent Gravestock and Ray Coldwell pushed very hard and set some great lap times before the gear box failed. The buggy of Brendan Payne and Linda Miller were also out with gear box issues. The single seater buggy of Mark Hannaford was fast, but he had trouble turning the steering wheel after the power steering pump failed. Garry Klingberg and Jake England had settled into a good race pace before hitting a tree that removed the left rear wheel from his Pro Class buggy. The Mumbannar track had taken it’s toll on over half the field at the end of the first 8 laps with Grant Bowden and David Oakley suffering a damaged sump. The fast Super 1650 buggy of Matthew Salt and Leon Hawke was matching lap times of his V8 competitors before stopping with a broken radiator after lap 8. After the hour break for lunch and repairs the second section started with the biggest challenge to finish. The new comers to the sport, Dallas Crowther and Tim Mibus managed another two laps before engine problems stopped the big black truck. Brad and Robert Cowland managed to repair their Super 1650 buggy only to have the same over heating problems in the second section. David Groten and Jake Stevenson rolled their Super 1650 buggy half way through the second section. Only eight of the eighteen starters completed the full race distance, proving the challenge to off road racing is finishing, as the track gets rougher the reliability comes into play. The Super 1650 driver James Tamblyn, with father Peter navigating, had stopped trackside to fix a flat
