Mount Gambier turns 5 Book an eye test today 40 Commercial Street West, 8723 0274 See page 3 for details

COVER Look who’s turning five It’s been a whirlwind five years for Specsavers Mount Gambier. Since opening its doors in 2009, the locally run franchise has rapidly built a strong and loyal clientele, won a Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Award, conducted more than 20,000 eye tests and just recently refurbished the store to make it even more user friendly for customers. After gaining experience in the optical industry and getting a travel bug out of their system, former locals Kathryn Benjamin and Erica Johnston joined forces to open their own business, choosing the Specsavers franchise to back their venture. Both studied at the University of Melbourne - Kathryn studying science before going on to train as an optical dispenser and Erica as an optometrist. The girls wanted to provide friendly, local expert service with the backing of an international company and with Specsavers being one of the largest and fastest growing optical group in the world, with a concept of offering unbeatable value for money, transparent pricing of frames, lenses and contact lenses, combined with high quality products and eye care, it was the

perfect fit. And clearly they got it right, with customer demand growing so rapidly that the original staff of four is now 12, including the recruitment of a second full time optometrist. The Specsavers Mount Gambier team is celebrating its fifth anniversary milestone from November 17-22. For their birthday week the store will be donating $5 from every eye test to The Fred Hollows Foundation and will be hosting fun family activities in store including Specsavers’ superhero ‘Specman’, balloons and giveaways. The store will also be offering $50 off when purchasing from the $249 range of glasses and above. They are also celebrating the $1800 they have raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Fred Hollows Foundation, through the Specsavers Community Program. Store partners Erica and Kathryn said the milestone was a great reason to say thank you to the community that has supported them. “We have much to celebrate since we opened our doors in 2009 - with more than 21,000 eye tests completed, more than 33,000 glasses dispensed and a number of serious eye health conditions diagnosed it’s been a rewarding five years with the Mt Gambier community,” said Kathryn. Erica said she was proud to offer her customers Digital Retinal Photography with every standard eye test, for free.“Digital Retinal Photography is a powerful tool that allows me to screen for abnormalities, assisting with the early detection of diseases including diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma,” she said. Specsavers Mount Gambier offers complete eye examinations,

including testing for macula degeneration and glaucoma, as well as children’s eye examinations, contact lenses, digital retina camera examinations and an extensive range of spectacles and sunglasses. The store’s recent renovation has resulted in a dedicated contact lens area and additional store space for servicing customers and displaying new designer ranges, including Cheap Monday, Fineform and Replay. Specsavers has also become a key community advocate, supporting a number of local and international charities, ranging from gifting glasses to those in need in this region, to fun contributions like distributing

ADVERTORIAL I Odyssey Vein Clinic Non-surgical leg vein treatment and cosmetic injectables

Dr. Emma Nolan and practice manager Kerryn Harvey established their business Odyssey Vein Clinic to offer non surgical treatment of larger or varicose veins of the legs. They have been established in Mount Gambier for three years now and visit approximately every four weeks “Now Is an ideal time to tackle your leg veins,” said Dr. Nolan. Dr. Nolan has 14 years experience treating varicose veins non surgically with a technique called ultra-sound guided sclerotherapy. This technique involves injecting the veins instead of stripping them – it takes about 45 minutes and involves no anaesthetic, surgery, or time off work. “We offer a consult, scan, and treatment all on the same day which minimises travelling time,” Dr Nolan said. “It also means that patients don’t have to travel to Melbourne or Adelaide for treatment.”

Odyssey also offers facial volumisers the liquid facelift, paralysing injections for wrinkles and dermal fillers for facial lines and folds. “We have had a terrific response to the cosmetic side of the business—the fact that we visit monthly and can see our cosmetic patients at short notice is a big plus,” Dr Nolan said. No GP referral is required. For more information visit www.odysseyveinclinic. com.au or contact Kerryn on 0403 965 548 Above - Dr. Emma Nolan and practice manager Kerryn Harvey.

LOCAL Millicent business in the spotlight

The fourth annual Millicent Business Community Associations (MBCA) Award Ceremony was held at the end of last month at the Somerset Hotel with a cocktail supper and presentations. There were six categories in the awards - two individual awards and four business awards. Nominations for the six MBCA Awards are received from the public and a judging panel of five decide on the winners by assessing the 25 word nomination entered. A seventh award, the Mayoral Award, is chosen by Mayor Peter Gandolfi. 5THE FM’s Rebekah Lowe compered the event with MBCA chairman Mike Reilly also saying a few words about the importance of the awards program. “I am proud of the awards and how they have grown over the four years since their inception and it gives the community the opportunity to recognise local businesses, with their nominations,” he said. The introduction of an online nomination process proved popular with 100 nominations received in the new format as well as the usual hard copy nominations, seeing around 200 nominations received overall. More than 60 people attended the gala presentation. Winners of the Business Awards received a trophy and an advertising package from 5THE FM and all nominees will receive a Certificate of Nomination.

WINNERS MBCA Rotary Young Employee of the Year Winner of the Rotary Young Employee of the Year is Pippin Ellis (pictured top left) from the Commonwealth Bank and she was recommended for the award for her efficiency, instilling confidence that your financial affairs are being handled professionally and with confidentiality. Pippin was surprised and proud and gave credit to the other staff who have helped her learn her new role. MBCA Employee of the Year Winner of the Employee of the Year is Anne Nowak (pictured above top right) from Target Country who is described as a person who has taken on management duties in a store that has no official manager and with her dedication and skill has achieved excellent results and successes in the Millicent store. Anne said the award belonged to all of the staff and was very grateful for the acknowledgement. Anne Nowak – Employee of the Year 2014 MBCA Outstanding Business Service Industry Outstanding Business in the Service Industry was won by New Heaven Indian Restaurant. Owners Sukhchain Singh and Kamal Jit Kaur (pictured above bottom right) have been in business in Millicent for just eight months and said they are very grateful for the warm welcome they have been given by the local community.

LOCAL New mayor for Southern Grampians

What’s On

Vibes Virtuoso November 10 - PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND Nick Parnell is celebrated as one of the most exciting vibes players in the world today, and in VIBES VIRTUOSO, he makes old music new again, injecting energy into a repertoire that might be familiar to some, but definitely inspirational to all.

At a Special Meeting of the Southern Grampians Shire Council last week, Cr. Peter Dark was elected as mayor of the shire. Cr Dark is a farmer at Mirranatwa. He has served as a board member on the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority, including three years as chairman. He has also been a CFA volunteer for 45 years with his local brigade. Cr Dark (pictured above) was first elected to council on October 27, 2012. During his acceptance speech Cr. Dark thanked the outgoing mayor, Cr Albert Calvano, for his service to the chire during his two years as mayor, saying he had been a tireless advocate for the people of the Southern Grampians. “You uplifted the shire and the entire community owes you a debt of gratitude,” Cr. Dark said. Cr Dark spoke about the importance of accountability and good governance and also stressed the importance of the focus on infrastructure of major shire enterprises.

“The airport and the livestock exchange redevelopments are both very exciting projects,” Cr Dark said. “They are an essential part of building the shire for the future.” Cr. Dark is looking forward to continuing to work with the community and council towards achieving all of the priority projects identified for the future of the Greater Hamilton region. He also spoke about the importance of economic development for the future of the shire. “As well as exploring ways to bring in new investment and job, we also need to do all we can to support existing small business,” Cr. Dark said. He said that it was a great honour to be elected the lead the shire. “I will work with officers of the council and with the Councillors and do all within my power for the community,” Cr Dark said.

Euphoria Lily King English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the Territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers’ deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Set between two World Wars and inspired by events in the life of revolutionary anthropologist Margaret Mead, Euphoria is an enthralling story of passion, possession, exploration and sacrifice.

Bordertown Spring Festival & Show November 15 - Bordertown Showgrounds - 9am-5pm There is a strong focus on the cookery, school competitions and machinery displays at the Bordertown Spring Festival & Show and every year there is always plenty of high octane entertainment with motorbike displays and stunt shows. The Bordertown event has a strong market feel with plenty of stalls.

ADVERTORIAL I Gardenarium Layby now for Christmas...only six weeks to go... Christmas is just around the corner.... Sorry, someone had to say it.....but with less than six weeks to go, it’s time to start getting those Christmas thoughts together. It has certainly been an interesting year weather wise and the spring moisture will allow us to continue with good plantings up to Christmas and beyond...hopefully. This spring we have been busier than ever, and being the largest nursery in the region and only nursery in Mount Gambier, we have almost completed our expansion of the Limestone Coast Advanced Trees part of the business and the new gift shop area is packed full of ideas for the gardener, non gardener and of course Christmas gift giving .All of our shipments of garden giftware, outdoor furniture, birdhouses, wall art and much of the ranges I found on my travels. Our huge pre-Christmas sale starts today with up to 70% off giftware, glazed and terracotta pots, wall art, statues and ornaments and water features. With reclaimed teak birdhouses from India, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia and statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming. Remember, too, that much of our stock is handpicked from small batches made by developing and poor countries, so many items are one offs and we will never have them again. A great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them. The Pot Shop section is still undergoing a transformation with a new container of pots just landed and being added to the new sales area as the days roll on more and more Christmas stock is being put out. You can lay-by now for Christmas and leave picking up until as late as Christmas Eve if you wish. A new shipment of real wicker furniture has just arrived along with our 2015 range of outdoor tables in travertine and marble, cast aluminium, PVC, German wicker with three year warranty, as well as we have expanded our own range of reclaimed teak furniture with new chairs and benches. Teak

is, of course, the premier outdoor furniture timber, with high oil content and has a lifetime warranty. A new shipment of Kubu (real wicker) has just come in too and we have added to this range a two seater bench to add to our already comprehensive range of garden benches, trees surround seats and outdoor swing seats. These blend well with our own imported ranges of furniture to offer the widest selection in the Limestone Coast and Western Districts. If you would like a new setting for Christmas, don’t leave it too late as all of our containers have landed and been unpacked. We are hoping to have most of this on the website as soon as possible for ease of viewing for those unable to come in. We can freight throughout the readership area and right across Australia on most of our giftware and furniture, so don’t stress if you can come in to the store and browse. Some great stocking fillers include our stainless steel and oak handled, trowels, forks, ladies digging spades and forks and other tools, leather gardening gloves right up to long arm to protect from rose thorns. Christmas decorations in gold include acorns, pine cones, our range of driftwood Christmas trees, wreaths and stars, has been added to with reindeers (see advert) from the driftwood collected by villagers after the tidal waves in the Philippines, allowing them to rebuild their lives. We still have a few planters and wind chimes in driftwood and bamboo available at 25% off to clear.. The farmyard and corrals are full again with an array of pigs, sheep, cows and chooks, right through to our metal oil drum animals that are intricately made by AIDS affected orphans in Zimbabwe. The new range in these for this year is the mini series of smaller, lower priced counterparts to their older brothers and sisters and came in most of the animal range along with a few new additions including a hot air balloon planter! . Our huge brass and copper weathervanes are $100 off in the sale and are ideal for mounting on houses and outbuilding due to their size. We also have cast aluminium weathervanes for those in coastal areas. Gardenarium and The Pot Shop has also brought in a great range of new glass terrariums, (see advert) large decorative jars, glass candle holders, ideal for mini terrariums, incense oil jars and votive candles. And, of course, if it all get too hard then we have the good old gift vouchers in any denomination and they are valid for 12 months. So, whatever the gardener or non-gardener in your life is hoping for this Christmas be sure to make a trip to Gardenarium and The Pot Shop and Limestone Coast Roses and Advanced Trees and wander through the amazing array of goodies. As one of our customers said “its a lolly shop for adults, without the calories.” Open every day except Monday to 5.30pm and 5pm on Sundays, head to our 167, Bay Road site, Mount Gambier or check out the website for details.

The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West Inc. is delighted to once again be conducting the annual Party in the Park following the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade this Saturday This will be the 17th year of the Party, and over the years the Ccub has had outstanding support from the Mount Gambier Council, many business premises and fellow service clubs; including the Lakes Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, the Lions Club of Gambier City and the Soroptimists Club of Mount Gambier. Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West Inc. event organiser, Barrie Whennan said it was the club’s way of saying thank you to the community, for their generous support of Rotary during the year. “Through the financial support of the council, the club provides free entertainment to all children, including a jumping castle, face and craft painting, ice cream, balloons and the chance to meet Father Christmas,” Mr Whennan said. The entertainment will include Scottish Dancing and Country Music during the day’s event. Free popcorn and fairy floss will also be provided, courtesy of the Lakes Rotary Club of Mount Gambier. ADVERTORIAL I Engelbrecht Cave Explore and indulge Hidden beneath the streets of Mount Gambier is a complex limestone cave system. There are a few windows into this system and sneak peeks can be gained by visiting the sinkholes in town, but if you want a better understanding, a glimpse into the spectacular karst landscape, that is the Limestone Coast, then a tour of Engelbrecht Cave is a must. A fully guided tour will take the visitor into two separate caverns, down to 26m beneath the streets of Mount Gambier. You will view the underground lake and see where the cave divers embark upon their journey into the water filled wonderland of this magnificent area. Learn of the somewhat sordid history of the cave in the early pioneering days and hear tales of the previous landholder and his ventures. A unique cave, Engelbrecht differs greatly from the Naracoorte, Tantanoola and Princess Margaret Rose caves of the region. If you’ve visited other caves and feel all caves are the same, or if you’ve never entered a cave before, then this is definitely worth checking out. Combining the cave with a coffee shop gives Engelbrecht’s the best of both

worlds - a place to come and explore, or a place to sit and enjoy a cuppa with a friend, or alone in quiet contemplation on the alfresco deck overlooking the cave mouth. Mahalia is the coffee of choice and homemade cakes and scones are always on the menu, with light lunches also available. Jan Coleman (pictured above) and her staff look forward to seeing you soon. Engelbrecht cave offers five tours daily on the hour starting at 10am with the last tour at 2pm.

LOCAL Historic shock win for quiet achiever Terry Laucirica, valued volunteer with 5THE FM, was named Wattle Range Senior of the Year 2014 at the award ceremony organised by the Wattle Range Council Seniors of the Month committee late last month. The award was sponsored by the SE Times and was announced by the Mayor Peter Gandolfi who presented Terry with her award. Terry is a

Dear Ratepayer Re: Fire Prevention With the Fire Danger Season fast approaching, it is the responsibility of all landowners within the Council area to commence fire prevention measures so as to prevent the outbreak of fire or the spreading of fire, to or from their property. Fuel reduction is one of the most important preparations you can undertake. The following are the minimum recommendations for fire hazard reduction: • For allotments 0.50 ha or less - reducing flammable undergrowth to a maximum height of 10cm by slashing or mowing. • For allotments greater than 0.50 ha - by mowing, slashing or grazing to a maximum height of 10cm all undergrowth in a strip 5m wide as near as practicable to the perimeter of the allotment, and all undergrowth within 20 metres of a

quiet achiever who has contributed to her community in many ways since arriving in Millicent 35 years ago, with her new husband local Millicent man Sec Laucirica, who she married in the Philippines. They have a daughter Amaya who is a successful recording artist. Terry was born in the Philippines, and as an adult was a school teacher there for 12 years. After settling in Millicent she worked at SAFRIES in Millicent for three years and at Penola for 10 years on 12 hour shifts. She was the first Filipino woman to make Millicent her home and her first point of contact with local people was the Catholic Church where she still maintains those friendships she made; she is still actively involved in the church. She has been a member of the Millicent Catholic Parish Pastoral Council for two years and a member of the Multicultural Council in Adelaide for two terms. Terry has visited Sheoak Lodge on Sundays to give Holy Communion to the residents for many years. She cleans the church, arranges flowers in the church for Sunday services and does whatever is needed. She performs the Liturgy at Sheoak Lodge once a month for the residents. When her daughter Amaya was at school in Millicent, she was heavily involved in school canteen duties and she has volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Millicent for 13 years. In 1991, she began what has now become an annual Christmas event for the past 23 years. It began as a Filipino Christmas Party but quickly developed into a multicultural Christmas Party attended by up to 80 people from many different backgrounds. Last year it was held at Lake McIntyre celebrating with multinational foods. She arranges gifts and entertainment and makes everyone feel welcome. Since 2002, she has held a weekly prayer meeting in her home to pray for local people and local issues in the region. This time is also used to spend time together over lunch and form friendships.

dwelling or shed/s etc. • Removal of any accumulated litter or materials (tree cuttings beneath established trees, heaps of bark, piles of wood) that are close to any building. • Pruning of any trees overhanging buildings; and • Removal of leaf litter and debris from all gutters and roofs. These standards should be maintained throughout the fire danger season, anticipated to be from 10th November 2014 to 30th April 2015. (However, these dates may be varied subject to seasonal weather conditions). Council will soon commence assessment of properties for levels of flammable growth. If full hazard reduction works have not been addressed on the property, Council can issue a hazard reduction notice against the property owners, pursuant to the SA Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005, Part 4A, Division 4 105F. Further, if necessary, Council can undertake the required works at your expense and an expiation notice of $315.00 may be imposed on landowners who do not comply with the notice. However, your cooperation in ensuring that your property is adequately protected against possible fire outbreak is requested in the best interests of public safety. Further information in relation to bushfire prevention measures is available on the CFS website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au.

For 35 years Terry has welcomed all newcomers to Millicent. People settling here from the Philippines, Africa, Asia or anywhere at all; she passes on her experiences to them and helps them settle into their new home. She quickly befriends them, offers them emotional support, has get togethers in her home to cook traditional food and helps their orientation into their new home. She is regarded with great respect by all who know her and is loved by the numerous people she has helped settle in to the region.Terry began hosting the Filipino radio program on 5THE FM 8 years ago to make sure that the program would continue, when the original presenter moved overseas. She wanted to make sure her Filipino friends still had this program to enjoy and still have access to information about their community, which is broadcast through 5THE FM in their birth language. Terry also presents day time week day programs on 107.7 as well as the Filipino program on weekends. She enjoys hosting the day time programs using her daughter’s collection of music to entertain listeners. She is actively involved in fundraising events for 5THE FM and generously provides her Filipino spring rolls for events and special meetings at the station. She willingly sells raffle tickets to raise funds. Home for Terry is both Australia and the Phillipines. “Both are my home; the Philippines are in my heart because I was born there and my family are there but Australia has been kind to me and I love it here and I have my family here too – so I have two homes,’ she said. Terry was completely shocked when her name was announced at the awards ceremony. “I would like to thank the Senior of the Year coordinator Catarina Santos for her kindness and understanding of my excitement and nervousness yesterday at the award ceremony. Thank you to Mayor Gandolfi for his kind words and thank you to Budz Florist for the beautiful flowers. I am so happy and so proud and honoured to receive this Award and it is a big honour for me. Thank you Sheryl, 5THE FM’S manager for nominating me. I feel like the proud tennis players when they hold their beautiful trophy above their head,” she said. “I am also very honoured because I am the first Filipino person to win such an award in the region.”

Held at Monarto Go Kart Complex, the event attracted 120 South Australian entries. Kai Allen (below) continued his rich vein of form with a win in the cadets after qualifying on pole and starting at the front of the grid in all his heats. Kai took out the 16km final from Broken Hill’s Adam Slattery, with fellow Mount Gambier Go Kart Club member Bronson Boult finishing fourth after showing a good turn of speed. COLLECTED STUPIDITY Perfect storm... by Robbie Tansel I

might as well tell you I’m not in a very good mood this week. You’ll work it out for yourself if you keep reading but it’s worth making it really clear. I think what has happened is that I’ve run into a perfect storm of things that irritate me. The waves are all crashing around me and I just can’t see the land. To start off with, my son Shaquille has decided that at age two and a half he has no interest in sleeping through the night. He would much prefer to wake up three to six times a night to say hello. I’m not sure if it is connected to the fact that he has decided that he sleeps in his ugg boots now. What possibly makes the waking up thing even worse is that every few weeks he’ll sleep through the night. This will lead to Donna and I thinking finally he’s going to start doing it consistently through the night only to dash our hopes two nights later again. I think the hope is killing us. This sleep deprivation would be bad enough if I hadn’t decided a few weeks ago to start getting up half an hour earlier in the morning to exercise. It also wouldn’t be so bad if Shaquille had already woken me up at six in the morning but of course this is the hour of the day that he decides it’s time to do his best sleeping and so I’d actually be able to get some sleep. The sleep deprivation is driving me bonkers and the

Wrattonbully Cup November 21 - Gates open 11am - Naracoorte Racecourse One of South Australia’s most exciting and successful wine regions will showcase its best drops at the special Naracoorte-based thoroughbred race meeting. The Wrattonbully Race Day will see some of the biggest names in wine come together to toast the sport of kings in style, in the heart of the Limestone Coast.

exercise is then sucking any last energy I have out of me. Now let’s factor in the changes I’ve made to my diet. Anyone who knows me will tell you that my diet is still pretty hideous but to me it’s feeling like I’ve become an absolute health freak and I’m not enjoying it. Donna is trying to convince me that it’s going to be good for me; she’s of the opinion that I’m going to live for an extra 20 years. Right now, I’m like, “But do I want to live an extra twenty years if this is what it’s going to be like.” If we could palm off Shaquille for an hour or two to his most easily accessible baby sitters ie his grandparents, I might be able to regather some mental health. Unfortunately they’re somewhere out Streaky Bay way. Their story is that they’ve both retired and are doing the grey nomad thing but traditionally I’ve associated these sort of getaways with them being on the run from the law. Let’s hope for their sake that the boys and girls in blue don’t catch up with them because they’re not as fast as they used to be. The weather is not helping my mood. I’m convinced that the lack of mental health facilities in Mount Gambier is responsible for our weather because it is totally bipolar. One day it’s 30 degrees and unnecessarily hot. The next day it’s 18 and blowing icicles straight off Antarctica. I think it just needs to sit down and talk to a good counsellor. Are we doing summer this year or are we going to continue with a year long winter. Make

BOOK OF THE WEEK

House of Karls Dr Karl Kruszelnicki In the ruthless pursuit of scientific fact, there is no candidate more formidable than. Power hungry for experimentation, data manipulation and outlandish science propaganda, Dr Karl is Australia’s incumbent President of Science. In House of Karls, he addresses a range of issues and questions: how Politics and Greed are dirtying the purity of Science and why the world’s most expensive book costs more than $23 million dollars, but only $4 to post. How real is the Five Second Rule with food? Why does a frog in milk stop it from souring? Why did the Nazis steal the only Space Buddha?

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Perfect storm... by Robbie Tansel a decision and go with it. At another time of the year I think I might even have been able to cope a little better with all of my first world problems. But I hate this time of the year. I know what you’re thinking. “Here comes another rant about Halloween.” Or, “I bet he’s a Grinch and hates Christmas.” No, my issues have been compounded by Ocsober and Movember. Since when did we decide that we could change the names of the months? I was willing to overlook Rocktober but enough’s enough. We’ve been operating with the Gregorian calendar since 1582 but let’s just start changing the names of months willy nilly. It’s been creeping in for quite a few years now with days getting their own names; Red Nose Day, New Year’s Day, the Queen’s Birthday. It’s getting to the point that every day has some significance and its own name. I’m sure that it’s not that long until we won’t be using traditional dates.

The hairdresser will be saying, “I’ve booked you in for a hair cut next World Teacher’s Day at 3:00”. So that’s where I’m at. The only thing consoling me at the moment is looking at the positive side of ebola. I really don’t want to joke about ebola because we know how tragic it is for a lot of people. Have you heard that three Americans have been affected by it? You feel free to focus on the 5000 worldwide, but didn’t you hear me? You know? Americans; the people who are important and whose deaths are significant. Anyway, my bedroom activities are incredibly limited at the moment. Ebola is transmitted by bodily fluids. So my bedroom activities are still no good but at least I have a lower chance of contracting ebola. I told you I was in a bad mood. Maybe you should email me some funny kitty videos at robbietansel@gmail.com

Dunkeld Cup November 15 - 11am – 6pm - Dunkeld Racecourse The 2014 Royal Mail Hotel William Thomson Dunkeld Races is a taste of grassroots racing in one of the most picturesque racecourses in Australia. Nestled at the foot of Mt Abrupt, the Dunkeld racecourse is a spectacular location for a day of fillies and fashion – it’s the Spring Carnival in the Country.

Following a competitive application process, the Wattle Range Council received notification it was successful in securing $80,000 to promote and develop the region’s food, wine, tourism and agriculture industries. Whilst the funding will be received and administered by council, the project is an industry-led initiative for the benefit of the whole Limestone Coast region. The project, called The Limestone Coast Collaborative, will see marketers and producers work together to develop a regional brand; increase awareness of the Limestone Coast across tourist and consumer markets; and build the capacity of local food, wine, tourism and agriculture businesses so they are better prepared to take advantage of ‘buy local’ consumption and visitation trends. The collaborative, chaired by local viticulturist Daniel Newson, is currently represented by a small group of enthusiastic organisations and individuals who have an interest in promoting the region. This group has worked hard to secure funds on behalf of the abovementioned industries and is now preparing to engage with a wider audience. “We look forward to expanding our networks to communicate with as many food, wine, tourism and agriculture businesses in the region as possible,” he said. “If you want to be involved or keep informed of developments please register your details on the website: www.thelimestone coast.com.au “Our ultimate aim through the Collaborative project is to create a regional brand, marketing and development program that will rival other Australian regions.” “Most people are familiar with the Barossa brand and the Eyre Peninsula is also gaining some ground in the marketplace. We believe the Limestone Coast as a food, wine and tourist destination is just as good, if not better. “This funding will go a long way to helping the Limestone Coast realise its potential”.

They came from across Australia and even internationally at the weekend to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Mount Gambier Baptist Church. Past ministers, long serving members and their children and grand children attended the celebration afternoon tea that launched the weekend on Saturday, followed by a gala dinner on the Saturday night and a commemorative church service on Sunday morning. Mount Gambier Mayor officially opened the weekend and launched the 150th anniversary booklet, which was compiled by long serving member and anniversary coordinator Ruth Hein, in what was his last official duty as the city’s mayor after 12 years in the role. Member for Barker Tony Pasin also attended the anniversary afternoon tea celebration, which was highlighted by a powerpoint presentation that traversed the church’s long history, as well as a performance by the Karen choir. The anniversary cake, created by church members Rhonda Earl, Beth Hunter and Wendy Carne was also cut by representatives across the generations. The State peak body for Baptist churches was represented by Rev Mike Mills, who was part of the afternoon tea anniversary launch and the guest speaker at Sunday’s service. The weekend was a chance to reflect on the role the church has played in the Mount Gambier community and a rare opportunity for old friends to catch up and reminisce.

Animal Welfare League set to celebrate your pets

Gazzard does it again

It’s all about your pets this Sunday when the South East Animal Welfare League holds its annual fundraiser – Paws Around The Lake. Running from 9.30am to 2pm, there is a $5 registration fee to take part in the walk, with a raft of other activities on the archery field lawns opposite the cactus garden, including pet photography, canine fashions on the field and other animal related stalls. There will also be onsite catering, making for a fun, family day out. Paws Around The Lake is so much more than a fundraiser though, with the league seeing it as a vital opportunity to celebrate the role pets play in our lives. “It’s about celebrating animals, enjoying our animals and socialising with other people who love animals as well,” organiser Anne Bates said. The league does, however, rely heavily on fundraising with 70 percent of its finances coming from its own efforts and so it has also produced a 2015 calendar to help raise

funds. Photos in the calendar are animals that have been adopted or are available for adoption from the animal welfare league, with the images supplied by Georgia Kelly-Bakker and Lachie Argy, and the calendar compiled by Connie Bates. Calendars are available from South East Pet Supplies, Fur Family Pet Resort & Grooming, Gambier Vets, Brumby’s Car & Dog Wash, Direct Blinds & Awnings and To Go Gourmet Sandwich & Expresso Bar. Paws Around The Lake attracted almost 600 people last year and organiser are hopeful they can top that figure this weekend. The SEAWL is undergoing a significant and vital redevelopment that is being undertaken stages as finances permit. The South East Animal Welfare League is open Monday to Friday 9-11am and 4-5pm and weekends from 9am-12noon. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or adopting a pet should contact the league on (08)8723 9133 or email seawlsa@gmail.com

It was a case of history repeating itself for Peter Gazzard (pictured above) at the weekend’s Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb as he once again broke a gear box, just as he did last year, meaning he was unable to complete his final run. It mattered not, though, as the leading local hope and defending champion won an emotional sixth title in the ninth year of the popular event. As it so often has, it took a race record to hold his long time rival Kevin Mackrell (pictured below) at bay, but in his second run Sunday morning the 50.77 time proved enough to claim the title. He was the only driver to break 51 seconds. “Quite a few people came up to me and said Lionel (Stingers) would be happy I won and it really was emotional to hear people say that,” Gazzard said. “The memorial for Lionel, with Wendy (wife) and Sean (son) was also amazing

and really special.” Race founder Lionel Stingers lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. Gazzard didn’t have it all his own way, with Mackrell moving to the top of the leader board with his last run on Saturday before Gazzard was able to reclaim the overnight lead with his final run and long time bridesmaid Kevin Weeks was nipping at the duo’s heels every run, finishing third overall. Fourth place went the way of a hill climb first timer - Danny Traverso - in the same car as Gazzard, and the tarmac rally driver will be back. “I’ve always wanted to do it - it’s one of the most popular events in Australia,” Traverso said. “I’m good friends with Kevin Mackrell and he always comes here but it was always filled up so fast that if you’re not organised you miss out.” This year, though, Traverso made the call in time. An accomplished driver, who used to compete in hill climbs, Traverso currently leads the Australian Tarmac Championship, a four race series. And the man who travels Australia to race had nothing but praise for the Mount Gambier event. “It’s a good family event,” he said. “I could bring the family, the kids - it’s been great. I’m used to being in the car for eight hours a day but this picturesque location was hard to beat. It was very well run. Organisers gave us plenty of information and they were very friendly.” Traverso loves how drivers really push each other in hill climb events. “I had a good battle with Damien Brand in the top 20 shootout,” Traverso said. “You could tell he was on his home track and didn’t want some guy from Melbourne beating him.” Traverso was certainly impressed with Gazzard, who he has raced against at other motor sport events, and said he would always be tough to beat. “I plan to come back faster and stronger,” Traverso said. The only complication with that challenge is that the event clashes with the TARGA High Country tarmac rally. “Gazzard is driving in his own backyard so you expect him to be good,” Traverso said, “Perhaps he would come and take me on in my backyard,” That is Haunted Hills in Victoria
