COVER Stunt rider returns to Millicent Show in style There are many highlights on this weekend’s Millicent Show program and arguably one of the headline acts is local stunt rider Josh Burdon, who is returning to his home show for the first time in years and he has an impressive homecoming stunt to wow the local crowds. What started out as a bit of fun between mates has now turned into a Millicent Show feature act as Josh teams up with Dion Kain, from D.A & J. M Kain Transport, to perform the high flying feat. “We sort of set it up one day as a bit of fun and then decided it would be great to do it at the show,” Josh said. As the cover suggests, Josh will be involving the transport company’s trucks and he won’t just be doing it once – there will be three performances on Friday (4.30pm, 6.30pm & dusk) and twice on Saturday (11.30am & after the 3.15pm grand parade). Josh is excited to be returning to his home show after a long absence. “It’s been around five or six years since I’ve performed at the Millicent Show,” he said. But he’s certainly been busy in that time in a freestyle motorcross career that has seen him travel Australia. He was offered a professional ride in 2004 and enjoyed that life on the road until 2008 when he broke his leg and had to re-think everything. “That really set me on my backside

when I got that injury,” Josh said. “Even when I got back on the bike, I was nervous to start off with because of the impact when you land after some of these tricks.” But it did make him think about life off the bike and that was when FactoryFMX was born as Josh set up a business. FactoryFMX is a freestyle motorcross team that provides all its own equipment, including ramps, safety airbags and the like and Josh and his team of professional athletes promise a choreographed show of all the latest stunts and tricks. Josh is certainly looking forward to bringing his latest stunt to his home show, as it is a trick he has never performed publically before. Josh’s Millicent Show stunt event promotion has been made possible by the generous multi-faceted support of Dion Kain and sponsorship from the following local community businesses and individuals - Greg Hart, at Green Triangle Finance & Leasing; Mark Hodgens, at K&S Fuels; Mike Reilly, from the Millicent Business Community Association & Klasbilt; Eddie Kuhl, from Eddie Kuhl Tyres; Jeff Taylor, from Kain Transport; Geoff Teagle, from Teagle Contracting; and Emily Ellis, from Lifestyle1.

boiling water for 1 minute. Drain and reserve zest. Combine sugar, lemon juice and 2 tablespoons water in same saucepan and cook, stirring, over low–medium heat until sugar dissolves. Simmer for 3 minutes or until thickened, then return zest to pan. Makes 125ml (1/2 cup). Using a skewer, poke approximately 15 holes all over cake. Pour half the hot syrup over cake, allowing it to sink in, before adding more. Stand cake in pan for 30 minutes. EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

I thought you’d all be interested to get an update of how my training for the Blue Lake “Fun” Run is progressing. I base this on the fact that I think you’re all completely fascinated with me and my life. Right? To be honest, the main reason I’m writing about my training is actually to seek advice and guidance. Being new to this jogging thing there are a number of issues of etiquette that I’m not completely sure about and I want some help so I don’t commit a faux pas. For those keeping score at home, that is the first time I’ve ever used the phrase faux pas and I just hope that I used it correctly. I’ve been in training for three weeks so far and my biggest achievement has been my self discipline. I have dragged my unmotivated corpse out of bed three times a week at six in the morning during this time which I think is an achievement even before I go outside and start the jogging. I’m still not sure if I should be proud of myself or hate myself for making me do it. One thing I would like to know is does everyone hate jogging or is it just me? I dread the thought of getting out of bed to do it and then I dislike every minute of slogging my way around the streets. The stupid thing is I feel satisfied that I’ve achieved something when I’ve finished. An issue that is troubling me is the etiquette of greeting while jogging. I’m assuming it’s polite to say, “G’day” as you travel past someone, whether they are travelling towards you or in the opposite direction. I have two questions though. s it still necessary to greet someone who is wearing headphones if they are travelling in the same direction as you? They probably can’t hear you and they won’t see your face to know you were speaking to them. It’s a complete waste of the very limited supply of oxygen that I have at that time. I understand that if I’m travelling towards someone they will see my lips moving and if I don’t make the effort I’ll look rude. Secondly,

Lifestyle1.net - 022

should I greet someone if they are on the opposite side of the road? Does it depend on how wide the road is? On a narrow lane you should greet but on a major road no greeting is necessary. Is it a matter of the distance the greeting has to travel or is there some other formula I need to use. These are tricky issues, I know. Another etiquette issue I’ve been thinking about is what are the obligations for passers-by if I have a heart attack. To be honest I think about this one a lot as it seems a distinct possibility at every step. But should I be disappointed if they don’t perform CPR or is it acceptable for them to simply call an ambulance? Another question I have is am I meant to feel pain all the time while jogging? Will there come a time where I reach some level of fitness that allows me to feel somewhat comfortable while running? I feel a significant amount of discomfort from the time I leave my front door until quite a while after I arrive back there. At some point will I get past this? I’d like to finish by sharing my secret motivation because I like you and I think it might help you get motivated for the “Fun” Run. I have a theory that the fitter I get, the closer I will get to the runners up the front. The runners up the front are the fitter runners with the nicer bodies. So the fitter I get, the better the scenery I get to admire. I’m hoping if I’m admiring some lovely ladies as I run the “Fun” Run it will take my mind off the fact I’m dying and keep me moving towards the finish. Alternatively I could just stick a picture of a pretty girl on the back of a slow mate and jog behind him. Just a theory. If you can answer any of my questions, please email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

LOCAL Historic back to back wine accolades for Brand’s For the second year in a row, Brand’s Laira’s Coonawarra One Seven One Cabernet Sauvignon has been named the top wine at the Limestone Coast Wine Show. The 2012 release collected four trophies at last week’s presentation feast inside Coonawarra’s Katnook Woolshed, including the David Wynn Trophy for ‘Best Red Wine of Show’ and

the HR (Ron) Haselgrove O.B.E. Trophy for ‘Best Cabernet Sauvignon’. Named after the Brand’s Laira low-yielding Block One vineyard that was planted in 1971, the prized drop, which is only produced when the quality of the fruit is exceptional, went on to claim the Bill Redman Trophy for ‘Best Wine of Show’. The accolades earned viticulturist Trent Brand his second consecutive highly coveted Arthur Hoffman Trophy for ‘Viticulturist of Best Wine of Show’. Chairman of judges, Andrew Wigan, praised the 2012 Brand’s Laira Coonawarra One Seven One Cabernet Sauvignon’s incredible style, saying it “did a demolition job on every other wine in the show”. “It is a wonderful wine and a wine that was selected unanimously by the two associates and three judges on the panel; they all gave it a gold medal,” he said. “It is beautifully balanced between clever oak handling and the intensity of Cabernet – it’s just a beautifully stylish, fruit-driven Cabernet from a great vintage which really shows the strength of this region.” Wrattonbully’s Malone Family also won back-to-back trophies in the museum class. The 2006 Malone Shiraz won the Ewen Fergusson McBain Trophy for ‘Best Museum Wine’, building on the success of the 2006 Malone Cabernet Sauvignon which commanded the judges’ attention in 2013. ”It just has beautiful perfume and substance and is a wonderfully crafted shiraz that shows another style coming from this area, and it’s a wine that has richness and texture and should have a very long life ahead of it - it’s just starting out in its career as a wonderful wine,” said Mr Wigan. The Wrattonbully wine region also laid claim to the ‘Best Sparkling or Sweet Wine’ Trophy, which went to the 2012 Yalumba FSW8B Wrattonbully Botrytis Viognier, and the ‘Best Other Single Red Variety’ Trophy, which was won by the 2012 Pepper Tree Wines ’14 Shores’ Single Vineyard Wrattonbully Merlot. Pepper Tree Wines was also named ‘Most Successful Exhibitor’ at the show. Meanwhile, DiGiorgio Family Wines secured a double trophy haul – the 2014 DiGiorgio Family Wines Kongorong Riesling won the Colin Kidd Trophy for ‘Best White Wine of Show’ and the Karl Seppelt Trophy for ‘Best White Wine (excluding Chardonnay)’. Judges described it as superb wine highlighting another exciting

corner of the Limestone Coast. “This Riesling showed a lot of typical citrus characters and a great line and length of purity with that lovely steely dry finish which is what we look for when we are judging Riesling, Mr Wigan said. “The fruit flavours from the vineyard south-west of Mount Gambier have been captured beautifully.” Balnaves of Coonawarra added another ‘Best Chardonnay’ Trophy to its collection courtesy of its 2013 Balnaves Chardonnay, and close neighbour Wynns Coonawarra Estate won the ‘Best Individual Vineyard Wine’ Trophy for the 2010 Wynns Coonawarra Estate ‘Alex 88’ Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2012 Wolf Blass White Label Shiraz Cabernet won the ‘Best Blended Red’ trophy, and 2012 Cape Jaffa Epic Drop was named the ‘Best Shiraz’, with the judging panel praising its “great depth of colour and flavour, and very softly rounded middle palate”. The International Judges’ Award went to the 2010 Majella Sparkling Shiraz by Coonawarra’s Majella Wines after impressing guest judge Fongyee Walker from Beijing. “They’re all pretty amazing wines, but my pick is something that I could put in front of 95 per cent of people that I meet and they will love it,” she said. “It’s a great tasting sparkling shiraz and I think it’s a really iconic Australian style of wine.” No trophy was awarded in the ‘Small Batch’ class, however the 2012 Wangolina Spectrum Syrah won a commendation. A total of 418 entries were received from 86 exhibitors for the 2014 Limestone Coast Wine Show, and 43 gold medals, 58 silver and 146 bronze medals were awarded. “Fifty-nine per cent of all wines that were entered won a medal, and that’s an incredibly high number that speaks volumes for the quality of wines that are coming We’ve always helped our clients with their income tax out of the region,” said Mr Wigan. “And the fact that returns whilst also helping to protect their income. this year’s winners were spread right around the Limestone Coast gives Make sure your income is covered, as this is your most a lot of credibility to the Limestone Coast as a important asset. region; the great wines aren’t just coming from the traditional areas - they Income protection protects your lifestyle by replacing are coming from the newer up to 75% of your income, if you are unable to work areas as well, and I think that’s really exciting.” as a result of illness or injury. ADVERTORIAL I Metro Bakery & Cafe New expertise added to Metro team

ADVERTORIAL I Tower Motor Inn Motel upgrade officially unveiled

Metro Bakery & Cafe is synonymous with delicious, freshly created pastries and the newest member of the Metro team is set to only enhance that reputation. Mherical Gomez arrived in Mount Gambier from the Philippines a fortnight ago and brings with her a wealth of experience, having run her own business and worked as a pastry chef in Singapore and Qatar. Mherical (pictured below) has worked in large and exclusive pastry outlets and specialises in French cakes and pastries and her

Caroline and Gary Walters always harboured a desire to run a motel and 12 years ago that dream became a reality. The desire to run their own business and the opportunity to work in such a people oriented business headlined the reasons the couple wanted to enter the hospitality industry. Last week, an exciting chapter of that 12 year journey was unveiled with the couple, who run the Tower Motor Inn, in Mount Gambier, officially celebrated its latest major redevelopment, which saw four rooms upgraded to four star status and an innovative outdoor kitchen and dining area created. The major refurbishment was fast tracked when the Jubilee Highway West motel secured a Federal Government grant. The funding program was part of a push to fill an identified four star standard accommodation gap in the Limestone Coast region and required Caroline and Gary to outline their plans for the motel and the way that would positively impact tourism and the local community. The couple also had to match the grant dollar for dollar as part of the project. The four unit overhaul started in February and was finished in July, with 95 percent of the project being completed by local contractors, in fact 49 different local businesses had a hand in the impressive redevelopment. All those contractors and other key stakeholders were all invited to last week’s official unveiling where local chef Graeme Armstrong provided a

recruitment assessment describes her as having a great eye for detail with a good imagination and vision, producing products of a very high quality. She has not only studied baking and culinary arts extensively but also has completed a Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management. Mherical will be working alongside head pastry chef Kamal Perwal and the rest of the bakehouse team as Metro continue to develop new lines, expanding its pastry and cake range.

delectable menu in the outdoor kitchen. The stunning outdoor cooking facilities have already proved popular with a mini bus of Chinese visitors making the most of the new space last month, cooking up a feast of local crayfish with the same operator promising a return visit this month because of the new facilities. Caroline has also created a stunning garden surrounding the outdoor kitchen with Asian visitors, many of whom live in high rise accommodation, relishing the chance to stay somewhere with a garden. The Tower Motor Inn has been part of the Golden Chain accommodation group for the past five years and the latest redevelopment has seen the facility inducted as a foundation member of the group’s new Platinum level.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Iron Eagle Dean Cox For fifteen seasons, Dean Cox was the ‘Iron Eagle’, a seemingly indestructible 203centimetre ruckman at the heart of a famous - and at times, controversial - West Coast Eagle side. Tough, loyal, relentless and highly skilled, the big man from the Dampier Archipelago rose from humble beginnings to become the lynchpin of the Eagles’ famous 2006 premiership, a six-time All-Australian champion and, ultimately, the West Coast Eagles’ record-holder for most games played.

Mt Gambier & District Community Bank速 Branch

LOCAL New look fundraising ball for Portland Portland’s annual charity ball will continue in 2015 as a fund-raiser for a new local cause, the Portland District Health (PDH) helipad project. The former Make-A-Wish ball will now be known as the PDH Wish Upon a Star ball for 2015. The ball on the

Portland foreshore has become one of the social highlights of the year and has raised many thousands of dollars for sick children over the past 13 years. However, members of the Portland Make-AWish branch resigned en-masse in September after communication issues could not be resolved. There is no longer an active Make-A-Wish branch in Portland. The branch previously covered the region to Winchelsea. The volunteer members have continued to plan the ball and have decided the 2015 event on February 7 will be run in conjunction with PDH and in support of the helipad. Former branch president Gail Jaensch said she was pleased that the ball would continue and support a worthy local cause. “We are a passionate group of volunteers and we will continue to go with our passion,” she said. “We have chosen to come on board with PDH as we believe the helipad is very important for our town and for the whole south-west.” About 500 tickets have been sold

for the ball. Ms Jaensch said she was pleased to be able to confirm the event would continue to support the local community and all money raised would go back to the area. “It’s Portland’s event and we want to continue that. We are hoping the entire town will get behind us and support this as it is a community event,” she said. “As resigned volunteers of Portland Make-AWish branch, we would like to give something back to the public. It will be nice to see all monies raised go locally, so we can give back something to the public who have supported us all the way.” Ms Jaensch said it was disappointing that the Portland branch of Make-AWish had disbanded, but the local volunteer committee was determined to continue to run the ball and support local charities. “As a community we need the helipad because we’re so far away from Melbourne, so we’re very happy to partner with PDH,” she said. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the health service was pleased to partner with the volunteers to make sure the ball was a success for the community. “We welcome the opportunity to work with the volunteers and to have their support through this great community event,” Ms Giles said. “We will work with them to make sure it is a success for the community, for PDH and for the helipad.” Ms Giles added that PDH was an important part of the local community and being involved in events like the ball would strength those ties. “The helipad is an important health and safety asset for local people,” she added. Ms Jaensch said the 2015 ball would have some surprises. “It is a new direction and the event is being transformed. There will be a few surprises,” she said. ADVERTORIAL I Claire Easterbrook Podiatrist Taking care of all your podiatry needs When young podiatry graduate Claire Easterbrook moved to Mount Gambier she thought it would be for 12 months. The Adelaide born podiatrist was hoping to gain some experience and as a student she had worked in Mount Gambier and enjoyed the experience. She left her boyfriend in Adelaide and pursued her career. That was eight years ago and Claire and her now husband are proud to call Mount Gambier home. They love the professional challenges and successes it has brought them and they enjoy the community and the lifestyle it offers. A community health worker, Claire has also gained extensive experience in the private practice arena over the past five years but was looking for a new challenge. “Even before I knew I wanted to be a podiatrist, I knew I wanted to run something, have my own business, be in charge,” Claire said. “It was time to challenge myself again and starting my own business seemed the logical next step.” Along with the support of family and friends, Claire also received plenty of encouragement and advice from dietician Cheryl-Ann Bennett, a co-tenant in her Margaret Street practice. “She really has been a mentor for me,” Claire said. “There is a psychologist in there as well so we are kind of an allied health

With the Fire Danger Season fast approaching, it is the responsibility of all landowners within the Council area to commence fire prevention measures so as to prevent the outbreak of fire or the spreading of fire, to or from their property. Fuel reduction is one of the most important preparations you can undertake. The following are the minimum recommendations for fire hazard reduction: • For allotments 0.50 ha or less - reducing flammable undergrowth to a maximum height of 10cm by slashing or mowing. • For allotments greater than 0.50 ha - by mowing, slashing or grazing to a maximum height of 10cm all undergrowth in a strip 5m wide as near as practicable to the perimeter of the allotment, and all undergrowth within 20 metres of a dwelling or shed/s etc. • Removal of any accumulated litter or materials (tree cuttings beneath established trees, heaps of bark, piles of wood) that are close to any building. • Pruning of any trees overhanging buildings; and • Removal of leaf litter and debris from all gutters and roofs. These standards should be maintained throughout the fire danger season, anticipated to be from 10th November 2014 to 30th April 2015. (However, these dates may be varied subject to seasonal weather conditions).

WHAT’S ON

Council will soon commence assessment of properties for levels of flammable growth. If full hazard reduction works have not been addressed on the property, Council can issue a hazard reduction notice against the property owners, pursuant to the SA Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005, Part 4A, Division 4 105F.

Coleraine P & A Society 150th Annual Show - November 8 - 9am-11pm The Coleraine Show is the largest country show in the Southern Grampians Shire featuring cattle, sheep and poultry competitions as well as shearing, equestrian and log chopping events. Beaut utes are also part of the day long celebrations along with arts and crafts and plenty of food and entertainment and it all culminates in the fireworks display. Call (03)5575 2431 for more details.

Further, if necessary, Council can undertake the required works at your expense and an expiation notice of $315.00 may be imposed on landowners who do not comply with the notice. However, your cooperation in ensuring that your property is adequately protected against possible fire outbreak is requested in the best interests of public safety. Further information in relation to bushfire prevention measures is available on the CFS website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au.

When veteran Jon Clayton made an unbeaten 102 last weekend it was in slightly unusual circumstances. His team was chasing quick runs to push for an outright victory and he certainly gave Mil Lel a handful of chances to deny him the milestone. But his heroics clearly inspired his Barber Shield contemporaries and this weekend, three players topped triple figures. Penola skipper George Kidman was the foundation of the Penola innings of 216 with an entertaining 102. In a round where the bowlers would have believed they could have the edge with the overnight and morning rain ahead of the opening round on turf wickets but it wasn’t to be as all three games saw good totals compiled. The South GambierYahl contest was abandoned for the day with that being the only wicket unable to withstand the downpours of the previous 24 hours. Kidman scored 12 boundaries and cleared the rope twice as the East attack could find no way past the Eagles captain. East had Penola at 5/81 with basically the tail to follow when Brett Vaughan departed but Kidman and paceman Kurt Evans (39) knuckled down in a 72 run sixth wicket partnership that turned the game well and truly in the visitors favour. Somewhat surprisingly, though, Kidman’s score was only the third highest of the round with two North Gambier young guns stealing his thunder somewhat. Jake Schutz (104no) and Matt McInerney (119) causing the Kongorong attach all manner of pain at Marist Park. Kongorong won the toss and sent North in, on the basis that some water had seeped under the covers and the wicket also looked a touch green but in reality, it played like a dream and 10 players were handed the ball over the course of the afternoon as North powered to 4/370. The young century makers compiled a 146 run second wicket partnership, and if the wheels hadn’t already fallen off, thanks also to some sloppy fielding, they were certainly about to. North skipper Michael Silvy strode to the crease with 18 overs to play and the Tigers sitting pretty already at 4/236 and he and Schutz scored 130 off those 18 overs, including 70 runs from the final seven overs with Silvy only just running out of time to make it a third century maker for the day at Marist, finishing 90 not out. Neither McInerney or Schutz gave a chance during their maiden Barber Shield centuries and once the duo saw Alex Hentschke and Mick Waters off, they were well and truly set, playing the full array of quality cricket shots as they dug in and worked their way to three figures. Mil Lel can thank Justin Taylor (35) for the second consecutive week, after the paceman saved his team from an outright loss last round, he teamed with Brett Lawson (38) to take Mil Lel from a precarious 6/73 to 7/135 and eventually a defendable target.

MOTOR Gazzard & Mackrell resume rivalry as race founder is honoured The rivalry is set to continue this weekend when local hope Peter Gazzard and Traralgon hill climb specialist Kevin Mackrell go head to head in the ninth Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb, in Mount Gambier. Gazzard leads the championship tally 5-3 and is gunning for his fourth consecutive Legend of the Lakes title and while the smart

money says the duo, that has won every title on offer between them, will again be the major contenders. But there are other hopes in the field – good drivers with arguably, even better cars and there is a strong chance a new name will be engraved on the 2014 honour roll. Kevin Weeks, in his crowd favourite Lamborghini, has

always been the driver most likely and again looms large, while another long time entrant, Greg Keene, has the world’s best Porsche at his disposal – the 911 GT3. A new name in the mix this weekend is Nick Streckeisen, who is in good form in his Nissan GTR R35, while Kier Wilson and his son Kurt will also be ones to watch in their Nissan GTR. So while the high octane action in the capacity field will again be the same, if not better, than the previous nine hill climbs, there will be two conspicuous absentees – Legend of the Lakes founder Lionel Stingers, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year, and long time event supporter and popular motor racing identity Doug Lehmann, who also passed away inn the middle of this year. Both leave a huge hole in the 2014 event, hot on the heels of the event losing another racing identity Peter Hall on the eve of last year’s event. Stingers is a huge loss for the event and long time friend Peter Gazzard says it will be strange to not have the hill climb chief calling the shots in 2014. “About eight years before the first hill climb, Lionel organised for the road to be closed and for me to do a run at the lakes with some council representatives there,” Gazzard said. “He told me what he wanted to do and I told him he would never ever get it off the ground because of the red tape and getting permission and all those things. I thought it was as far fetched to me as a boat race on the Blue Lake.” But Lionel Stingers was nothing if not determined and in 2006, the inaugural Legend of the Lakes was held. “Lionel was involved in motorsport for 40 years but he was unusual in that he got cars ready for other people and liked to lend his cars to others and not really compete himself,” Gazzard said. “I never understood why he was always helping other people. He used to take cars from Perth to Queensland and everywhere in between for people to race. But that was Lionel – he said it was important to help young people get a start.” Not surprisingly, the man who gave so much to the sport, and more particularly, this event, will be honoured this

weekend with most cars set to sport specially produced bumper stickers – RIP Lionel Stingers: The Real Legend of the Lakes. “What he loved was running an event everyone enjoyed,” Gazzard said. “And he was huge on safety which you can’t say about a lot of other events.” Gazzard said the course is the most popular in Australia and is a great route to drive, on a par with the Bathurst hill, which everyone loves. “And unlike most other events that are in the middle of nowhere with lots of dirt everywhere, this is a great track, with a great pit area and in a prime location in the town,” he said. The Mount Gambier event is also arguably the fastest circuit. “I get up to speeds Jubilee Hwy West, Mount Gambier of 220kmh here when in a lot of places I don’t really top 100kmh,” Gazzard said. Another special touch will be Lionel’s son Sean, who chauffeured his $8,700 $5,900 dad around in the official course car at previous events, competing in his dad’s pride and joy – a 1980 Ford Escort. The classic cars and the Leukaemia Foundation’s Aussie Muscle Car Run 2003 SUBARU FORESTER X 2004 HOLDEN VY WAGON entrants will tackle the Cruise, ABS, 2.5 litre, AWD, full history, 203,000kms. Cruise, ABS, power windows, 204,000kms. course on Friday from 10.30am with racing on Saturday and Sunday $19,500 $11,750 starting at 10am.
