Mt Gambier A&H Society 154th Spring Show Fri 24 & Sat 25 October 2014 Mount Gambier Showgrounds, Pick Avenue Proudly sponsored by Gambier Earth Movers Pty Ltd See page 3 for details

COVER Countdown to 154th show The 2014 Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show is only a couple of weeks away, with the 154th event set to swing into action on October 24-25. The final touches are being added to the highly anticipated entertainment program, with the Team D-Max precision driving crew, the Jay Seeney Band and free magic shows among the new features planned for 2014. Mount Gambier A&H Society president, Peter Woodruff, says an enthusiastic committee has been working hard over winter to create a memorable event. “The grounds are looking tremendous – we’ve put a new surface down in the main arena for the Horses in Action which is going to be just magnificent, we have upgraded the entrances to the Horticulture Pavilion, and we have also opened up the Log Chop area to make it more visible to the public,” he said. The A&H Society Office also has a new-look team, with Janelle Bradley taking on the role as Executive Officer earlier in the year. It will be Entries Co-ordinator Nita Von Stanke’s final show after 12 years, with her successor, Chris Pudney, back on board with the A&H Society after a four-year break. Sorting through the mountains of entries will be the key focus for the trio over the next few weeks, with nominations flowing in for the various exhibits. “Entries have now closed for the Indoor exhibits including art, cookery, cake decorating, craft and photography, while budgerigars, poultry and pigeons, beef cattle, led steers and sheep dogs close this Friday,” said Janelle. Meanwhile, entries in the various animal and agricultural classes will close over the

coming fortnight. Entries manager Nita Von Stanke says the response has been very positive, with enthusiastic locals putting their talents to the test across a broad range of categories. “We are up to 1500 so far, and we’ve got all the horticulture and animals to go,” she says. “It’s refreshing to see so many young ones with traditional show entries; it seems that a lot of their parents and grandparents have been show participants in the past, and are now encouraging the next generation – this is what keeps the show alive.” Judith Wood, who was last year’s inaugural winner of the Murray and Beryl Hill Memorial Trophy for Most Successful Exhibitor, is among those continuing a strong family tradition. Fresh from a trip to the Royal Adelaide Show where she collected a ribbon for second spot in the Laucke/CWA Scone Competition, Judith plans to enter 19 cake classes and 23 classes for jams and preserves in the Mount Gambier Spring Show, and defend her trophy named in her parents’ honour. “I’d encourage everyone to have a go – if there’s something you’re good at cooking, you should really consider entering,” she said.

A new Schools Prime Lamb Competition is being introduced at this month’s Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show in order to help promote and raise awareness about the sheep industry for the next generation of farmers. Schools are being invited to enter two weight classes – export lambs of 22-26 kilograms to suit the export trade, or lambs 18-21.9kg to suit the supermarket trade. The competition class is attracting growing interest, with Allendale East Area School among those registering to enter before this Friday’s deadline. Senior students are preparing to show a pair of Dorpers donated by Mount Schank farmers Tina and Leigh Collins, along with a composite breed donated by James Beck. “A lot of schools tend to focus on the steers, but they also have sheep, so this is a competition that they can access very easily,” said agriculture teacher Danielle Westbrook. “Our students have been raising lambs for a while, and this opportunity enables them to take that job to a whole new practical level; it’s not about wool - it’s about fat depth, cover, conformation and overall skin value.” A & H Society Pastoral Committee secretary Brian Kerr said each lamb would be ultrasound scanned for eye muscle and fat depth. “The students can go along and look at the ultrasound machine and understand what we are looking for with this type of lamb – we want it to be a learning experience for them so that they are able to select lambs to suit market requirements and weight specifications,” he says. Judging by a prominent Limestone Coast livestock identity will take place on the opening

Friday morning of the show (October 24), with $175 worth of prize money up for grabs in each class. Meanwhile, judging for the Schools Led Steer Competition starts at 9am on Thursday, October 23, with around 100 teenagers from schools from as far away as Bordertown, Lucindale and Kingston set to participate. Allendale East Area School is the reigning cattle champion for the Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show after their Hereford entry was named Champion Steer on hoof and hook in 2013. The led steer team continued its winning roll at last month’s 2014 Royal Adelaide Show, returning with three ribbons, including Reserve Champion Handler, which was won by year 12 student Billy Moir. “The steers were donated by local breeders, and we now have a similar relationship for the lambs, so that’s another way to reinforce the connections we’re forging between farmers and schools,” said Miss Westbrook. Allendale East students will also be volunteering on the Friday and Saturday for some of the studs involved in the Beef Cattle judging.

LOCAL A chef & a caryard take out top gongs

Noel Barr Toyota celebrated 23 years of serving the Mount Gambier community this year and underwent a significant redevelopment of its Bay Road site and on Friday night the iconic car yard was crowned the 2014 NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Retail Business of the Year. The local accolade adds to a swag of honours from within Toyota and is a feather in the cap of founder Noel Barr and his 25 employees who currently ensure the Noel Barr Toyota experience is always of the highest quality. The dealership has won a number of Toyota excellence awards, both as a dealership and also individual staff

members, and impressively has claimed Toyota’s Bronze Knight Award for nine consecutive years – a clear sign of is standing as a market leader in this region. And the past 23 years have been about more than just building a successful, respected business, it has also been about becoming an integral part of the Mount Gambier community. “We have sponsored a number of sporting groups and community organisations over the years,” Noel said. “It is important to give back to the community that so willingly supports you.” One of the night’s other major gongs went the way of talented chef Bill Hunter, who is plying his trade at Metro Bakery & Cafe. He was named the employee of the year in a strong field that also saw the Flight Centre’s Olivia Coote and Gambier West Brake Service’s Sebastian Mancuso awarded high commendations in the category. Bill boasts more than three decades in the hospitality industry and has proved an exceptional mentor to the young Metro staff – both in the kitchen and front of house. Bill’s award wasn’t the only accolade for Metro which took out the Outstanding Tourism/Hospitality/ Accommodation Award. Bush Repair took out the Environment & Sustainability Award, Beachport Liquid Minerals took home the Manufacturing Building Industry Award and Mount Gambier Rural Supplies was adjudged the most Outstanding Agribusiness. The Outstanding Service Industry went to a new kid on the block in Perception Personal Styling, while Blue Lake Turf Supplies was named Outstanding Small Business. The other highlight of the evening was the induction of three Mount Gambier success stories into the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Hall of fame. Van Schaik’s Bio Gro; Exchange Printers and Gabriel Electrical Contractors were honoured for their long standing commitment and high level of service to the local community and beyond.

Vintage Diamond – The Ultimate Neil Diamond Show November 1 - LIGHTHOUSE THEATRE, WARRNAMBOOL Vintage Diamond perfectly recaptures the sound, songs and look of the era that was Neil Diamond - a performance reminiscent to that of the legendary 1972 concert album Hot August Night.

LOCAL Getting in the pink for breast cancer It all started back in 2000 when the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group was formed by Mount Gambier’s Leanne Kosch and Tantanoola’s Kay Holloway. They planned a luncheon to raise funds for breast cancer awareness, which has been successfully held at The Commodore on the Park since. There have been 15 committee members involved throughout the years and the current committee holds an annual “pink” fundraising event in October to continue the work of those who started this committee but have unfortunately lost their battle. In the past couple of years a Pink Pary – a cocktail function – has replaced the traditional luncheon and the revamped format has proven popular. This year’s event is this Friday night at the Commodore on the Park. This group that started with a luncheon at the Commodore on the Park in 2000 has raised more than $165,000. Fundraising money has been used for detection equipment, research and upgrades for groups and facilities such as the Millicent Hospital Chemotherapy Room, Mount Gambier Hospital, Mount Gambier’s Women’s Health Program, Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group, Greenhill Lodge, Hanson Institute, Flinders Medical Clinic, Calvary North Adelaide Hospital, Cancer Council SA and Breast Cancer Network Australia. In 2012 committee member Maria Knightly came up with the idea of the Helping Hand Bag as she wanted to help local women financially and wanted fundraising money

to stay local. The bag provides financial support to women with breast cancer and it is filled with fuel, food and pharmacy vouchers purchased from local businesses. These bags are then given to health professionals who discreetly give them to women in need in Mount Gambier and Millicent. The committee launched their new initiative of the Helping Hand Bag and the Helping Hand Calendar at their 2012 Luncheon. Laura Thomas, committee member created the calendar as an extra fundraiser to financially support the success of the Helping Hand Bags. The Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group has made and delivered more than 60 Helping Hand Bags to women in need in the local area since 2012 and we want these bags to continue so that we can help our local women financially as they battle their emotional journey. The fundraising group is also looking at using some of their funds to support our local hospital with the refurbishment of the new chemotherapy extensions by purchasing items on their “wish list”. Tickets for this Friday night’s Pink Party are $50 and include a glass of champagne on arrival and canapes. There will be music from the 70s, 80s and 90s with a fashion parade by Redgum Country. Tickets are available from Commodore on the Park and Redgum Country.

Above – This gorgeous quilt, created by Wendy Lowe (second from left) and Pam Creeper (far right) has been donated to help the fundraising cause. Committee members Maria Knightly (left) and Tom Kosch gratefully accept the quilt. Photo by Imogene Ryan.

ADVERTORIAL I Gardenarium We’re bursting at the seams with plants and garden ideas for spring Spring has well and truly sprung in the Limestone Coast and Western Victoria and to have had so many sunny weekends has been a pleasure. The nursery is bursting with colour, all of the Cercis have been flowering for weeks or you may know them as Judas tree, Red Bud or the ever popular purple leafed variety Forest Pansy. The new weeping form Lavender Twist is an ideal alternative to a weeping flowering cherry, in a pot or formal garden (see the stunning picture on our website). Cercis are such stunning trees and it is great to see the new tougher varieties filtering through to Australia. These are much more drough tolerant and will tolerate winds more, especially through summer. Come in to Gardenarium and Limestone Coast advanced Trees Now to see our Spring Festival of Colours, with crab apples just bursting in to flower, weeping and flowering ornamental cherries in full bloom, flowering plums, magnolias, the list endless. To celebrate Spring we have 25 % off all of our blossom trees and half price weeping flowering cherry Snow Fountains, the lovely narrow cherry that flowers along the entire length of the branches as they sweep to the ground and of course their stunning autumn foliage is a sight to behold. If climbing plants are your passion you cant look past the wonderful hybrid Clematis which are growing away madly at the moment, their huge, dinner plate size blooms on such delicate stems are amazing, but twine them though a rambling or climbing rose and they look superb or on their own in a wrought iron obelisk or tower. Wisterias are on the cusp of flowering with the huge one metre flowers of “longissima” one of my favourites and great to break that summer sun on north or west facing windows, festooning from the verandah or eaves, or perhaps Amethyst Falls, which flowers for longer with compact conical amethyst coloured blooms. Happy Wanderers are also in full blooms and the recently introduced pink variety Candy Wrapper is a great break from the purple and whites and is equally happy in a native or non native garden or as a focal point in pots on a tripod support,

this way you can keep them in check. Climbing hydrangeas are another interesting climber with two varieties available, one that self clings to the wall with masses of flat almost lacecap heads of blooms, the other needs some support but are quite a sight when in full bloom and ideal for shady walls where it is often hard to find a creeper that will flower. Spring is citrus planting time and with a new semi truck load of trees having just arrived, now is the time to get the pick of the crop, the dwarf varieties having been selling fast and the double grafted, two way or Splitzer citrus which can have any combination of two types of citrus on are great for pots or where space is limited as they only grow to less than the size of one normal tree. As a special for Spring we have them at half price for this week only on splitzers and $10 off advanced and extra large grade citrus that have fruit on now. With this early burst of spring whether tomato planting time has been brought forward a few weeks and all stocks of grafted, extra advanced on special for three for $8.95 and six advanced for $8.60, there are of course punnets and other sizes available. The new grafted variety for this year has been extremely popular, even though its new Indigo Ruby has been a huge hit with red and almost Inky black tones (anthocyanins) on the skin, which of course is responsible for the health boosting benefits in purple tomatoes, so this has been bred in to traditional red fruits to bring us this Super Tomato. Indigo Ruby is a plum style that fruits earlier than most. Who cant resist an orchid and despite their delicate, wax like appearance, Phaelenopsis or Moth Orchids would have to be the most indestructible indoor or patio plant, that practically flowers all year round and certainly one of the lowest priced orchids available. They come in range of colours from the traditional vibrant purple that you often see on your pillow in Asian hotels through to pure whit with darker centres, apricots and beyond. We have a huge range at present on special in ceramic planter pots in an array of colours to suit all decors or for a gift. If all of this spring weather

by Calum Haygarth

has got you out in the garden then you will want to think about planting hedges. The English box hedge is one of the hardiest, uses very little water and is also one of the cheapest plants to use as a border or edging, despite how difficult it is to propagate. The planting distances of these will determine the overall height of your hedge, so the best thing to do is to measure up the distance you wish to hedge and tell us the ultimate height you would like and we can calculate through our formula for you, its amazing how many times people get the spacings incorrect and have to dig up and replant their entire hedge. Now is a great time to plant as they are putting on all their lush lime green growth and we are running specials on them for this week along with pittosporum hedging plants in all our size grades right up to three metre high advanced plants. The past six weekends have been amazingly sunny apart from those unwanted winds and so the time to head outdoors and light up the barbecue is on again. Gardenarium and the Limestone Coast Group is the leaders in outdoor furniture in the region and we specialise in fully outdoor weatherproof furniture that doesn’t need lots of maintaining,

which many of the showroom types look good indoors but soon deteriorate and look terrible once in the elements. Our range of Travertine, marble and genuine teak furniture has once again expanded with new shipments arriving all the time at the moment. We have some New wicker and teak dining chairs (see advert picture) which are very comfortable and made with German PU wicker with a three year warranty, this takes over from our Devon Teak range which we are now running out the last of at clearance prices. Get in quickly if you are looking for a quality setting as there are some travertine, cast aluminium, real wicker five piece couch setting and more on sale to make way for the new shipments. So, whatever it is you need for the home and garden this spring, be sure to call in and take a look at what is new and changing at Gardenarium, Limestone Coast Roses, The Pot Shop and Limestone Coast Advanced Trees afterall we are the only nursery in Mount Gambier and the largest in the region, so there is pretty much nothing we haven’t got. P.S. If you haven’t seen our new gift shop too, call in and see the plethora of gift ideas, firepits and more.

Some Luck Jane Smiley Some Luck opens on the humble, heavily indebted Langdon family farm in 1920. We meet Rosanna and Walter, their curious, brilliant newborn Frank. Soon the family grows to five children, all wildly different yet remarkable, with such potential to mark history in their own ways. Yet as time passes, as it must, some thrive as others fall victim to flaws and fate. Who will persevere? Who will simply, sadly, be forgotten? With shared joys and hushed secrets, through times of economic and political volatility, Some Luck examines the nature of family, character, and how we are all changed by circumstances unforeseen.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY The real issues by Robbie Tansel Well we’re in the middle of another election campaign, this time for our local council positions. We can tell we’re in the middle of an election campaign because suddenly people who have been showing absolutely no interest in what’s happening are frequently writing letters to the editor. They are obviously doing this because they want to show us they exist. They are worried that if they don’t write letters to the editor or stick pictures of their face up around town that we might think they’re dead. The most concerning thing about the letters is that they don’t understand the issues that really matter to us. We don’t care about the car-parking issues. We don’t care about the Riddoch Art Gallery or the Main Corner. Our number one concern is not what should be done for tourism in Mount Gambier. We don’t care about bike lanes…okay, I’m getting a bit carried away now. We do care about those things a little bit. The number one

question I’d like to ask the mayoral and council candidates at the moment is, “Who should I be more scared of: ISIS supporters in Australia or ebola?” I know they’re both really scary but I just think I need some advice on which I should be putting the most effort into protecting myself from. As you can quickly work out, staying safe from both of these deadly threats will require different tactics so it’s important I know which is more of a peril to me. Ebola is a virus and it’s a virus that spreads from person to person via bodily fluids. Therefore to avoid catching the ebola virus I need to avoid people. To be honest I quite like the sound of this. I’m not particularly a fan of people so this will be a nice way to deal with that and at the same time avoid getting a deadly virus. I can imagine telling various members of my family, “Sorry, I can’t catch up with you. I’m trying to avoid the possibility of catching ebola.” I could also use it on door to door sales people or religious nuts. Not only will I keep myself safe, but I’ll also make my day to day life less frustrating. The problem with this strategy is that if getting killed by ISIS supporters is actually a bigger threat to my safety then I’m now making myself a sitting duck. If ISIS supporters are a bigger threat to my safety then I need to stay on the move, not sit around at my place. I’m easy to get if I’m in my usual location on the couch. My gut feel on the issue is that ebola might be a bigger threat. If I’m

LOCAL going to be scared of ISIS supporters I have to beware of Muslims and people with beards. My experience is that most Muslims are essentially the same as you and me. They’re mostly nice people who want to live a positive life and do the right thing. There’s the occasional nitwit but that’s no different than any other group in society. Black, white, Australians, Argentinians, people who live with their parents, people who like chocolate. Even Collingwood supporters. Okay, there are a higher percentage of nitwits in the Collingwood supporters group. So we should treat Muslims and people with beards exactly the same as we would treat anyone else. On the other hand, there are no good ebola viruses.

(08) 8724 9944 mtgambier@parliament.sa.gov.au www.troybell.com.au lifestyle1.net | 29

If you get the ebola virus, it’s not going to be very nice regardless. Mind you, I don’t think the ebola thing would be such an issue if they just started treating people like pets. If you take a pet to a new country it will be put in quarantine to make sure it doesn’t spread disease. Let’s just start putting anyone who comes back from Sierra Leone into a cage at the airport for a period of quarantine. And Collingwood supporters too, just for the fun of it. But realistically, I’d like to know what our mayoral candidates think about this key issue. If you have any other questions you’d like me to pose to the candidates email me at robbietansel@gmail.com Likewise if you are a candidate and want to respond to my questions email me or let’s sit down over a lovely hot (or cold) beverage and talk through some of my issues. My shout. The road to the big chair at council runs through Tanselvania.

Glenelg Shire Council region will cut its greenhouse emissions by 8500 tonnes, over the life of its street lights, when the ‘the Great South Coast Street Smart Lighting Program’ project is put into effect in the Shire later this year. With up to 62 percent less energy used per light, the new luminaries will also reduce costs to ratepayers, provide greater uniformity of light across and along the street and lower glare. Glenelg Shire Council was one of six south coast councils to be awarded $1,398,363 in funding by the Australian Government to implement ‘the Great South Coast Street Smart Lighting Program’ project. This project will involve replacing (an estimated) 1408 mercury vapour street lights with new energy efficient compact fluorescents, across the Shires of Colac Otway, Corangamite, Moyne, Southern Grampians, Glenelg and the City of Warrnambool. In Glenelg Shire this will occur between October and December this year. The process of changing over a light takes less than five minutes and involves a single elevated work platform and two to three crew members. So any disruptions to traffic flow should not last long and resident’s cars can remain parked on the street. Mayor John Northcott said the community would not only benefit from cost savings, but also rest easy knowing they are living in a shire that was considering its environment. “We live in a community that is very proud of its natural environment and protecting it is a high priority on most people’s minds,” he said. “This is one way we can help protect the beauty of region and ensure our children can experience the environment as we see it.” The lamps (or globes) will last at least four years and probably longer and the poles last around 35 years. The project is being managed and implemented by the Great South Coast Group Incorporated (Great South Coast), a group of local governments, businesses and the community working together to benefit the region.

The plans were set in motion in 1863 and a year later, the first South-Eastern District Pastoral and Agricultural Society Show was held in Penola. Hamilton and Apsley were the other two operational show societies at the time and when you look at how many shows are now held in the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria, it’s mildly amusing to think one of the big decisions was could the region absorb another show. At the end of this month, when the show celebrates its 150th anniversary, it will be held at McCorquindale Park – its home since 1950. It’s all about family entertainment at the Penola Show with the rose display one of its most iconic exhibits, while the sheep dog trials and equestrian events have also

dominated the program for a long time. Country shows have always been about showcasing the best of life in any one region and that means cookery, farm machinery and craft exhibits and competitions have always been key ingredients to all shows in this region, and the Penola Show is no exception. And no matter the size, there is always a side show alley, and an array of rides with the smell of fairy floss and hot cinnamon donuts wafting across the showgrounds on both October 31 and November 1. cont. page 32.

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS Penola Show FEATURE Celebrating 150 years of showcasing this region Horses in Action program. The sheaf tossing is a relatively new but already popular Saturday event, with a Show “N” Shine also adding to the program as another recent addition to the show program, where the region’s best utes and other much loved vehicles putting their best tyre forward. The challenge for organisers for the celebratory event has been combining the best of the old and the new to make the 150th show one to remember. Proof the wide variety of competitions, from the livestock, to the produce, to the cookery, to the schools categories are as popular as ever, has seen 30 new classes added for the 150th celebrations, including the largest sheep dag. The 2014 show will also feature memorabilia, including photographs, which have been gathered to mark the historical journey of the long standing event and will be arranged in Rymill Hall. Organisers are encouraging people to come dressed in historical costumes to mark the 150th birthday, while each steward has identified a class from their program to award a special 150th prize with the presentation of a rosette and trophy to mark the occasion. What you can be assured of is excitement will build once the show rides start rolling into town in the week leading up to the Penola Show – that’s always the time people start

to realise the popular event is just around the corner. Merrett’s Logging, Wynn’s Coonawarra and Wilson Contracting Penola have been long standing major sponsors of the Penola Show with the community as a whole always getting behind the event. Gates open on Friday, October 31 at 4pm and at 7am on Saturday, November 1. The 2014 Penola Show will be opened by President of the Royal Adelaide Show Society Richard Fewster. The Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro 400, is hoping to have 100 entries line-up for the 2014 event this weekend with more than 80 teams taking advantage of the early bird nomination deal. The Pines Enduro is the final round of both the South Australian Off Road Championship and the ARB Off Road Racing Series. If 100 teams line-up this Saturday it will be an historic milestone for the popular off road event. The milestone will mean a windfall for drivers is the 100 mark is reached. “If we can reach 100 entries for the 2014 Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro 400 by the close of entries, we will pay $2000 to the outright race winner and we will also double the class prize money from $250 for a win, up to $500 to win each class” said club representative Daniel Lamb. “If there is less than three entries in a class, they will be

amalgamated.” The series grand finale is shaping up to be a battle of the classes. Four classes sit in the top five outrights while the top 10 covers five classes. Carl Haby has an impressive lead after 10 ten finishes in the Element #56 Pro buggy at the first four rounds; banking maximum points at round four. Jamie Knight has shown that consistency pays dividends, driving the Knight Bros Racing #439 Extreme 2WD into second place. The ProLites of Andrew McClelland #131 and Luke Erceg #150 take up third and fourth respectively, both teams banking good points from the first three rounds, but failures at the last round saw them awarded outright points, but being one lap down they missed out on the valuable bonus finishing points. Tied for fifth place and the third team to have completed full race distance for the year is the first of the female contingent of drivers

The array of children’s activities in and around Millicent is fantastic and includes the Playground in the Domain, and Millicent Public Library school holiday programs, as well as the Skate Park to scoot or skate the day away. is on display. There are other natural wonders to discover as well with the Canunda National Park and Lake McIntyre, and checking out the region’s manmade wonder – the windfarms should also be on the agenda. Millicent is also the western most point of the Kanawinka Geo Park, which runs from Millicent into Victoria, almost to Melbourne. Mt Muirhead, the large hill that dominates Millicent is one of the oldest volcanoes in this volcanic region. Mt Burr, Mt McIntyre and The Bluff are other features. If you would like to follow the trail, brochures and maps are available at the Visitor Information Centre. EXPERIENCE MILLICENT Enjoy the racing & the district FEATURE Time to honour Millicent’s brightest & best Nominations are now open for the 2014 Millicent Business Community Association, (MBCA) Outstanding Business Awards. The categories for this year’s event are Outstanding Businesses in Agricultural/Horticultural; Manufacturing and Construction; Service Industry; Retail Industry, with individual honours up for grabs as Employee of the Year and Rotary Young Employee of the Year. The MBCA has hosted the Outstanding Business Awards for the past three years and see it as an important boost to the economy as people get the chance to recognise those businesses and individuals that go above and beyond and keep the Millicent business community ticking over. Organisers are calling for members of the Community to nominate their favourite local businesses by submitting a short story of 25 words or more, detailing why they

r

have nominated a business for a specific category. If you have received outstanding service or a kind act outside of your normal expectations, this is your opportunity to acknowledge the business or the person. An independent panel of judges , who are not committee members or business owners, assess the nominations. Official nomination boxes to lodge your choice, are available at Wattle Range Council, the SE Times office and the Millicent Visitor Information Office. Nomination must be lodged by close of business this Friday and winners will be announced at the Award Cocktail Party at the Somerset Hotel on Friday, October 31. The MBCA Outstanding Business Awards are jointly sponsored by the SE Times and Radio 5THE FM; both are donating advertising packages to the winners. It’s a high octane sport and Kai Allen is on the fast track to success. Just 18 months into his go-kart career, Kai has already been talent identified as a driver to watch, having been selected as one of 35 cadets nationwide to race in the Gold Coast later this month at a “Race of Stars” – an event held in conjunction with the V8 Supercars and including international drivers in the senior classes. Kai has just returned from Geraldton, in Western Australia, with the WA Open State Title. The five day meet saw 25 cadets from right across Australia go toe to toe across qualifying, heats and the finals. Kai finished first and fourth in his qualifying sessions; finished second and first in his heats and then third in the pre-final. But the rising star is nothing if not determined and he led for 20 of the 23 laps in the final to outlast Victorians Sean Larkin and Jay Hanson to claim the title. The WA honour adds to a trophy cabinet that also includes the City of Melbourne title. Kai is also currently leading with Victorian Country Series and came fourth overall in the Victorian Series. The nine year old,

who is in Year 3 at Tenison Woods College, is also unlucky to not have claimed the SA Open Title at Monarto earlier this year. He was leading the final by almost 50 metres when his engine failed with eight laps to go. But even though he’s only nine, Kai now understands that is motorsport. Kai has been playing his trade at the Mount Gambier Go Kart Club and their monthly meetings. The cadet class is for drivers 7-11 years old and most of Kai’s success is coming against older, more experienced drivers, as the young drivers reach up to speeds of 100kph. Shane Wilson has been a huge part of Kai’s career thus far, helping Kai, and his father Jason, set up his chassis, with A1 Engines providing the horsepower. Kai is certainly grateful for the support of his parents as he looks to see just how far he can go in go-kart circles and beyond.

Kent goes back to back in State titles The South Australian State Titles were hosted by the South East Field & Game Association over two days at Burrungule Park last month. Shooters travelled from New South Wales, Victoria, Adelaide and the Riverland, including members of the Australian team. Jeremy Kent (pictured) went back to back, claiming the State championship, making it a double celebration for the host association. Following the event the top 15 State qualifiers were named with plenty of locals featuring. To qualify shooters must compete in a number of qualifying shoots held around the State. Those named were Ron Rhook (2nd), Gavin Dyson (5th), Ken Atkins (6th), Jamie Dunn (7th), Ernie Scheidl (9th) and Tim Widdison(14th). Ron Rhook, who is no stranger representing South Australia and Australia, was also named in the State team. Gavin Dyson and Ken Atkin were named reserves but as neither are able to attend the nationals later this month another local in Jamie Dunn has been handed the green vest. Fundraiser for homelessness looking to set new benchmark Last year saw the inaugural ‘Swagtember’ event held at Sacred Heart School, Casterton. The school’s Mini Vinnies group organised a fundraiser which consisted of a BBQ and sleepover to raise money for people who are homeless. Due to the generosity of the Casterton community, the group was able to raise more than $3000 and was the highest fundraising group in Australia. Those efforts made sure more than 50 homeless people had somewhere dry and comfortable to sleep at night. Due to last year’s ‘Swagtember’ success, Sacred Heart School has continued again this year, but with it being such a busy month and having holidays, ‘Swagtember’ was postponed to ‘Swagtober’. The event is being held Thursday and organisers are inviting everyone who wants to be a part of the action and give to people who, at the moment are not as fortunate as us, to head along. You can assist the findraising effort to supply Street Swags for people who are homeless by coming to the BBQ Tea at Sacred Hall from 5.30pm this Thursday or sleeping over on Thursday night and enjoy a supplied breakfast in the morning for only a $3 donation, buy a raffle ticket or donate at the school office or to Vikki or Noah O’Brien. A Street Swag is a weather proof portable sleeping bag that can be folded into a shoulder bag during the day and rolled out at night to sleep in. Last year each swag cost $60 to produce, but they are given free to people who are homeless. Introducing

The City of Mount Gambier is encouraging residents to join the ‘commuter revolution’ by choosing pedal power over vehicles next Wednesday. Participants in the local leg of national Ride2Work Day this Wednesday will be rewarded with a free breakfast fuel stop at Mount Gambier’s City Hall. City of Mount Gambier environmental sustainability officer, Aaron Izzard said registrations couldbe lodged on the Ride2Work website, or else cyclists could simply roll up on the day. “We would love to see entire workplaces hopping on board this initiative, and Mount Gambier is the perfect place to do it as it’s such a bike-friendly city,” he said “It’s not very big, so it doesn’t actually take much time to get around; everywhere in urban Mount Gambier is within a five-kilometre distance from the main corner, so it’s a maximum 20 minute ride if you’re on the outskirts.” The city has never been more bikefriendly with new bike lanes enhancing the area’s connectivity with key destinations and attractions. “There are some hills, but not a great deal – if you live on the side of the volcano, you have a good ride to work but a tough ride home, and that’s about it, really,” said Mr Izzard, adding that the weather is hardly an excuse either. “Studies have shown that it rains less than 70 times a year during peak travel periods – and a lot of that would be passing light showers - so that leaves 295 days which are perfect for riding.”
