LOCAL Dual winners for prestigious sports scholarhsip The Trisha Flett-Sally Jane Allen Sports Scholarship commemorates and honours two of this region’s best and brightest stars who tragically lost their lives in a motor accident on their way home from representing SA Country in Albury at the Australian Junior Country Basketball Cup in 1990. The scholarship has now been running for 23 years and was awarded for the 24th time earlier this month. Such is the depth of talent in this region, the scholarship has often seen multiple winners and 41 athletes in all have been honoured since its inception in 1991. In 2014, two more winners, were added to the honour roll – netballer Mary Wilson and softballer Amber Hood. The duo was selected by a panel of experts from a field of 10 strong nominees, many representing multiple sports. But in the end, the State representation and All-Australian selection for Mary and the dual State representation and eventual national team honours for Amber saw the two teenagers rise above the rest of the field. Mary is a girl with big dreams and they all revolve around diamonds – the Australian Diamonds that is. Mary hopes to one day play for the Adelaide Thunderbirds and also represent her country at Commonwealth Games and other major international championships. If this year alone is anything to go by, she’s on the right track. Mary was part of the 15 & under SA Country Championship winning Western Border netball team, the same team that also claimed the Western Zone title in Victoria.

outstanding baseballer and mum Tanya still dominates the local softball competition. Not surprisingly Amber started playing T-Ball as a seven year old, graduating to softball a year later. Since then, Amber has accumulated individual accolades, multiple regional representative gigs and a swag of premierships. But it has been the past 12-18 months that has really seen all her hard work come to fruition. In 2010 and ’11 Amber was a State SAPSASA player and she has translated that early promise to higher honours, playing in both the 17 & under Schoolgirls State team and the Under 17 South Australian team at the national championships this year. Her schoolgirls performance saw Amber selected in a national Schoolgirls side that is headed to Hawaii later this month. Amber harbours dreams of representing her country as well as playing professionally in the US. And the two winners beat out a strong field of nominees. Laura Edmonds had an impressive hockey resume highlighted by her selection in the State Under 16 Schoolgirls team this year; 13 year old Patrick de Vos is another young hockey star having represented South Australia at under 12 & 13 level; Jack Patzel is a cyclist on the rise that has already represented South Australia as part of the track team and Caleb Perry is a 15 year old golfer with an Under 21 ranking, that has a number of State honours to his name. Basketball is the sport of choice for Lachlan Hunter and the young talent has been a regular in SA Country teams, being part of the Under 16 gold medal winning team this year; with basketball also taking Brenna McKay places, a talented girl who is also a strong netballer, culminating this year in the South Australian Under 16 team, being named in the team of the tournament at the national champion ships. Jade Delaney is young, fit and busy, already making inroads in hockey, netball, tennis, swimming and athletics, making the State Under 13 hockey team this year, while Finn Johnson is another of this region’s hockey stars, representing his State at under 12, 13 & 15 level in both outdoor and indoor line-ups. The Trisha Flett-Sally Jane Allen Sports Scholarship is also supported by Sportscene Mount Gambier and Squashbrook Fitness & Leisure.

Make-A-Wish Charity Golf Day Friday, October 17 - Attamurra Golf Course Men’s women’s & mixed teams for a 9 Hole Ambrose. $25 per person, includes a game, afternoon tea & schnitzel dinner. Teams of three with one experienced golfer. Nominate at the Attamurra Golf Club.

The 2014 Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show is now less than a month away, with the 154th event set to swing into action on October 24-25. The final touches are being added to the highly anticipated entertainment program, with the Team D-Max precision driving crew, the Jay Seeney Band and free magic shows among the new features planned for 2014. Mount Gambier A&H Society president, Peter Woodruff, says an enthusiastic committee has been working hard over winter to create a memorable event. “The grounds are looking tremendous – we’ve put a new surface down in the main arena for the Horses in Action which is going to be just magnificent, we have upgraded the entrances to the Horticulture Pavilion, and we have also opened up the Log Chop area to make it more visible to the public,” he said. The A&H Society Office also has a new-look team, with Janelle Bradley taking on the role as Executive Officer earlier in the year. It will be Entries Co-ordinator Nita Von Stanke’s final show after 12 years, with her successor, Chris Pudney, back on board with the A&H Society after a four-year break. Sorting through the mountains of entries will be the key focus for the trio over the next few weeks, with nominations flowing in for the various exhibits. “Entries have now closed for the Indoor exhibits including art, cookery, cake decorating, craft and photography, while budgerigars, poultry and pigeons, beef

cattle, led steers and sheep dogs close this Friday,” said Janelle. Meanwhile, entries in the various animal and agricultural classes will close over the coming fortnight. Entries manager Nita Von Stanke says the response has been very positive, with enthusiastic locals putting their talents to the test across a broad range of categories. “We are up to 1500 so far, and we’ve got all the horticulture and animals to go,” she says. “It’s refreshing to see so many young ones with traditional show entries; it seems that a lot of their parents and grandparents have been show participants in the past, and are now encouraging the next generation – this is what keeps the show alive.” Judith Wood, who was last year’s inaugural winner of the Murray and Beryl Hill Memorial Trophy for Most Successful Exhibitor, is among those continuing a strong family tradition. Fresh from a trip to the Royal Adelaide Show where she collected a ribbon for second spot in the Laucke/CWA Scone Competition, Judith plans to enter 19 cake classes and 23 classes for jams and preserves in the Mount Gambier Spring Show, and defend her trophy named in her parents’ honour. “I’d encourage everyone to have a go – if there’s something you’re good at cooking, you should really consider entering,” she said. heat. Add prawns and cook for 2-3 minutes, turning, until cooked through. Remove to a bowl and set aside. Increase heat to high. Add squid and scallops. Cook, turning, for 1-2 minutes until just opaque and almost cooked through. Set aside with prawns. Reduce heat to medium and melt remaining 10g butter with remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Cook the onion, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add garlic and rice and stir for 1-2 minutes to coat the grains. Add a ladleful of hot stock and stir until absorbed. Continue adding stock, 1 ladleful at a time, stirring and making sure each is absorbed before adding the next, until rice is al dente. This will take about 20 minutes. (You may not need all the stock.) Stir in the seafood, passata or sugo and parsley. Season and cook for 1 minute until heated through. Serve garnished with parsley.

The Recycle Centre at the Hamilton Landfill is under new management. The Southern Grampians Shire Council previously contracted out the shop operation however it was decided that it would be more cost-effective to commence running the service in-house. The new management arrangement commenced at the beginning of September. The recycle centre will be staffed from 10:30 to 4:00 Wednesday to Friday and 10: 30 to 4:30 Saturday and Sunday. While the shop is unstaffed Mondays and Tuesdays, it is open and assistance can be sought from the weighbridge attendant on these days. Residents can bring any items suitable for re-use to the centre, instead of paying for these items to be disposed in the landfill. Items are then available for sale and include furniture, tools, building materials and anything else that can be given a second-life. Items must be delivered within opening hours of the centre. There are many benefits of having a Recycle Centre: • Promotion of sustainability and recycling principles • Additional employment opportunities in Hamilton • Diversion of waste materials out of landfill • Opportunity for the purchase of second hand materials which would have otherwise gone to landfill The Hamilton Recycle Centre is located in Elijah Street, Hamilton, on the Hamilton Landfill site.

ADVERTORIAL I ReadySteadyGoKids Making exercise a whole lot of fun Hard working lawyer by day and now a juvenile personal trainer at the weekend, this is the latest chapter in Ebony Cunningham’s life. A multi-premiership player with Kalangadoo Netball Club and Cougars Basketball Club, physical activity has always been a focal point in Ebony’s life and she is now looking to ensure a new generation of kids realise the importance of being active. She is establishing a

ReadySteadyGoKids program in Mount Gambier – a physio-designed program specifically tailored to children aged 2.5 – 6 years, it is aimed at helping kids develop a lifelong love for physical activity. “Whilst we have a strong sporting culture in the region, there is a distinct lack of organised sport programs for children at the pre-school level,” Ebony said. “I love the ReadySteadyGoKids concept because it not only sparks a child’s interest in exercise and a healthy lifestyle but offers so many indirect benefits, such as assisting prepare a child for school readiness, being part of a team, improving self-confidence and developing a motivation to achieve – all skills children can carry through and benefit from well into their schooling.” ReadySteadyGoKids is currently run at more than 150 locations throughout Australia and classes cover the fundamentals of 10 different sports in a welcoming environment while developing age-appropriate motor skills. Soccer, athletics, tennis, basketball, hockey, rugby, Aussie rules footy, golf, cricket and T-ball are all part of the program. The energetic classes are specially designed to develop and enhance children’s gross and fine motor skills in a supportive environment. Each class is aimed at building key social skills such as sportsmanship and teamwork whilst fostering a positive attitude towards exercise. “Children are motivated by the social interaction and the interest of trying a new sport, a new challenge,” she said. Whilst starting off in Mount Gambier, Ebony hopes to expand the program to surrounding areas in the future to give as many families as possible access to the benefits of having fun through organize, age appropriate physical activity. “I was looking for an opportunity to do something I am passionate about – and came across the ReadySteadyGoKids program after friends from metropolitan areas were raving about it,” she said. “Each session is specifically designed to not only get kids’ bodies active but also their minds - music, equipment and

even some parental involvement contribute to lessons that make it hard for anyone, including instructors and parent, to keep the smiles off their faces.” Term 4 class will be running Friday and Saturday mornings, with the possibility of additional sessions according to demand. Delivering a combination of physical and emotional benefits, the Ready Steady Go Kids program is designed to build confidence and self-esteem, providing a platform of knowledge and boosting school readiness skills. Science-based foundation Our program was designed by a paediatric physiotherapist and occupational therapist. It aims to enhance children’s gross and fine motor skills, encourage their continued participation in sports and prepare them for the early school years. All classes are held indoors Rain, hail or shine - our classes are never cancelled in bad weather. With an indoor environment you can be certain that every class will always go ahead as scheduled. Multi-sports program We teach 10 different sports which helps children develop a broad range of skills, builds a platform of sporting knowledge and the variety ensures continued interest in the program. Incorporating “soft-skills” Our program incorporates basic counting and colour concepts, encourages team work and sportsmanship, builds social skills and develops listening skills and concentration. All of which improves your child’s preparation for school. Small class sizes Classes generally contain no more than 12 children and have a 1:6 instructor to student ratio. This means more attention for your child and better learning outcomes. The “feel good factor” Children develop greater self-confidence, enhanced self-esteem and a real sense of achievement, all of which shape their physiological wellbeing..

LOCAL Swapping schoolies for making a real difference Bayview College Year 12 student Julia Orlando will be creating positive change in the lives of children living in a developing country as an alternative to celebrating schoolies. Julia (pictured) was unable to participate in the annual Bayview Schoolies with a Cause program to Vietnam due to university entrance interviews, but made the decision to venture out on her own through the non-profit organisation Projects Abroad. Julia will be working directly with underprivileged children in Phnom Penh Cambodia. Julia travelled extensively throughout India last year with family and was inspired to make a meaningful and positive contribution to children, many with no family to take care of them. “I chose Cambodia as my destination after reading about the devastation caused by past civil war, and how it is still impacting on the lives of families and children,” she said.“I’ve been told the children I will work with are physically disabled, are street children or part of the large number of children who have lost their parents to AIDS. “My role will change on a daily basis but I anticipate I will be teaching children English, and about living healthy lives. My work will help the children develop skills and confidence needed for positive social interaction”. “I know the work will be challenging at times but seeing these under privileged children smile will make even the toughest day worthwhile.” Bayview College Schoolies with a Cause (SWAC) Program coordinator Nicole Angelino is thrilled that Julia has made the decision to celebrate her end of year in a positive way. “The perception of students celebrating schoolies as one long party is a view no longer held

by many school leavers. I applaud Julia for taking the opportunity that will offer her a challenging but rewarding experience” said Ms Angelino. Julia leaves Australia on December 18 for one month’s work. While in Cambodia she will also gain a greater understanding of the Cambodian history, culture and its people. Julia is raising funds for the project, with a target of $500. All funds raised will go directly to buying vital supplies; hygiene products, educational and play equipment for the children she will be in contact with. A donation can be made by going to www.mycause.com.au/page/82365/ cambodiavolunteerproject or placing spare coins in the fundraising tins that have been placed on the counters of local Portland businesses. Projects Abroad was established in 1992 when a group of University students ventured across the Iron Curtain to teach English.

LOCAL New Year’s Eve in Mount Gambier set to go off with a bang

What’s On

Tarpeena Family Market Sunday, October 5 - Tarpeena Hall Come & see the model railway and range of stalls while helping raise much needed funds for Ronald McDonald House. By this Christmas the market hopes to have raised $2000 with 20% of stall fees also going towards the tally.

Fireworks aren’t the only thing set to sparkle this New Year’s Eve. The fifth Mount Gambier New Year’s Eve Festival will be held at Vansittart Park, and is sure to help you see out the year an begin the next with a bang! Committee member Maree Thompson said there will be lots of new and exciting activities planned for the evening, as well as many popular ones returning. “We’ve got jumping castles, bucking bronco, karts, the wrestling, which was so popular last year, giant games, face painting and much more,” Maree said. “And this year we have a photo booth and a Bunnings activity tent for the first time, so it is sure to be lots of fun!” Local band Mischief and Mayhem will be the headline act on the evening, with other favourites including Essence of Mayfair, The Blue Lake Pipe Band and April Belle adding to the night’s entertainment. Spectacular firework displays are scheduled for 9pm as well as when the clock strikes midnight. Ms Thompson said a memorable night had been planned but she hoped that with even greater volunteer input and sponsorship the night can be made even more special. “We are still looking for volunteers, anyone that wants to come and help out on the day – everyone is welcome,” Ms Thompson said. “As for sponsorship, if you are able to help just come and have a chat to us – we don’t mind about how much, anything helps.” All activities and entertainment are free once you’re through the gate, with the committee welcoming people to bring rugs, chairs and a picnic basket and drinks to share and enjoy with family and friends. Delicious local fare will also be available for purchase on the night, including a fully stocked bar featuring the regions favourites. Admission is $12 for adults, with children under 15, students and concession tickets available for $8 and if you plan to take the whole family there is a $30 deal. The committee looks forward to welcoming people from across the state, and of course locals in what will be a night of festivity, fun and lasting memories.

Portland District Health has welcomed new funding to create an integrated allied health and primary care precinct. The State Government has announced $464,000 for PDH to relocate and integrate its primary care services creating a one-stop shop approach. PDH CEO Chris Giles said there would be advantages for both clients and staff from consolidating the services into a primary care hub. Allied and community health services to be co-located will include speech therapy, diabetes education, psychology services, dietitians, drug and alcohol services and cancer support. The project will create nine new consulting rooms in a former nursing home next to Active Health Portland. Ms Giles some of the services had been relocated from the former community health services building in Otway Street. “Bringing those services to the main site was the first part of providing a one-stop shop for health but they were located in many different areas. Bringing them together into a new easy-to-access precinct will make it much more convenient for everyone,” she said. Ms Giles said some of the services were currently operating from unsuitable and outdated facilities. “This will give our staff and clients purpose-built facilities which will enhance our ability to deliver quality services,” she said. The health service also welcomed an additional $32,000 to assist with final plans for the Portland helipad project.

AIS opportunity for local athletes Two of Mount Gambier’s most promising teenage athletes will be given a taste of life at the Australian Institute of Sport after gaining selection for a national training camp. Isabel Redemski and Luke Bull are among just 20 South Australian athletes to win a coveted spot in the 2014 Under 15 Little Athletics Australia National Camp being held in Canberra fas we speak. Both teenagers are members of the Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre, and gained selection after meeting the national qualifying standard in the 200-metre sprint (Isabel) and the shot put (Luke). “Both Isabel and Luke are extremely promising young athletes who will only continue to improve, and the opportunity to receive three days of training at the AIS Track and Field Facility under the supervision of some of Australia’s most high profile coaches is incredible,” said centre president Jonathon Lillecrapp. In addition to specialised training sessions, the camp features workshops on psychology and nutrition, strength and conditioning, stretching, recovery, and Injury prevention/self massage. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend presentations by elite AIS athletes. Hop, skip and jump online to register for Little Athletics Meanwhile, registrations for the new season of Little Athletics can now be made online. The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre says the move will streamline the sign-up process for families in the lead-up to the 2014/25 season, which officially begins on Friday, October 17. Registrations can also be completed at a Come’n’Try day for new athletes aged from Under 6 to Under 17, which will be held at the Centre shed at the ‘ATHLETICS FACILITY’ at Mount Gambier High School, Brownes Rd, on Sunday, October 12, from 10am-12 noon. “An Officials/Coaching Day will be held during November, for any parents or carers interested in learning the rules, while children will also be able to gain some valuable coaching tips,” said Jonathon. “We are an organisation run by families of the athletes, which promotes enjoyment and involvement, and we depend on these volunteers to ensure the success of our meets.” This year’s athletes will benefit from

brand new electronic timing gates, which will add to the authentic competition experience. Upgraded surfaces on the high jump and long jump tracks are also scheduled to be completed by the end of the year with the help of funding from the State Government’s Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program, the City of Mount Gambier and Mount Gambier High School. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer such top class facilities and program, not only to our own members, but those from other clubs and schools who utilise it,” Jonathon said. In addition to the weekly Friday night meets, opportunities will be available for Little Athletes to compete at an annual Regional Day (to be held on Sunday, November 23, at Bordertown) and the centre’s own Pentathlon Day in February. The age groups from Under 9 upwards who meet state qualifying standards throughout the season will also be eligible to compete at the State Individual Championships at Adelaide’s SANTOS Stadium in March. “But the main aim for athletes is to improve over the season and to achieve personal bests along the way, with the Centre’s motto being Family, Fun & Fitness – Be Your Best,” said Jonathon.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY How to do a fun run (part two)... by Robbie Tansel Last week I started telling the story of my participation in last year’s Blue Lake “Fun” Run. To summarise what I said last week for those who missed it, my big mouth got me into doing the stupid “fun” run, and I spent several months telling myself I should do some sort of training but never got around to it. On the big day, I arrived at the Cave Gardens about half an hour before the run. I was shocked to see scores of my fellow competitors already in the middle of a very vigorous looking aerobics warm up. I was totally convinced that the key to me somehow surviving the run was going to be completely mental as there was no real possibility of my body being up to running 6.8 kilometres. Therefore my warm up was the argument I had with my body about getting out of bed earlier in the morning. I was not at all convinced that I was going to complete the bare minimum for what I considered success on this occasion ie. travelling 6.8 kilometres under my own power. I certainly couldn’t afford to waste any unnecessary energy before my run/walk/ delirious stagger doing Zumba. I spent the half an hour nervously chatting to anyone I saw and recognised. Occasionally I’d stretch some part of my body briefly to make it look like I cared a little. Having not done any training in the previous

two months, it wasn’t like doing some stretches was going to save me from any future pain. The obviously much fitter than me people who were competing in the 10.1 kilometre run were sent on their way first so we took the opportunity to watch these lean, mean physical specimens charge up the hill. Shortly after, we made our way to the starting area. The on-course commentator advised the serious runners to head for the front, the middle of the range runners to congregate in the middle and the walkers and other no hopers to find their way to the back. To be honest I thought that regardless of my lack of fitness I’d be able to get a reasonable jog on for a while so maybe being in the middle would be appropriate, but made the decision to head up the back anyway. Looking back, it was a good decision which I would recommend to others; it meant that with not much of an effort I could feel like I was passing people who obviously thought they were fitter than they were, early on. As silly as it was, it was an early confidence boost to go past someone. Later on I’d be too delirious from pain to notice when they passed me back. I had no idea what my pace was going to be so I started with a pretty slow relaxed jog. I wanted to see how long I could jog for before the walking would start. Very early my legs were feeling heavy. I certainly didn’t take that as a good sign. Nonetheless I pushed myself for as long as I could. In my head I set myself for a couple of landmarks further

up the road, telling myself I could walk when I got there but when I reached them I still had some puff left so would push on a little further. I had my first walk about a kilometre from the start, just short of Lake Terrace, having made it a good distance up the Bay Road hill. Early on I also noticed very quickly how bad my running action is. I’ve had plenty of ankle injuries over the years and I think that each one has led to a new running action, each one more damaging to my body than the last. The second kilometre is possibly the hilliest part of the Blue Lake Fun Run as you continue up Bay Road and then turn to travel around the Blue Lake. Still being fairly early in the run I had enough energy to do some jogging in between some walking. At this stage I was really trying to push myself as fast as possible when walking. I didn’t have a real time in mind for completion but if I was going to walk I really wanted to keep some pace up to keep the time as quick as possible. See that competitive attitude coming through? I was pretty happy with my travel over this tough part of the course, jogging over half of it by my recollection. Keeping fluids up seemed like a pretty good idea in theory. When I reached the

early drinks stations I decided to have a drink despite the fact I didn’t really feel any need. Immediately it seemed like not the best of ideas as the very small amount of liquid I’d consumed starting bouncing around in my stomach. I’ll stop at this point for another week. Many of you may think that things seem to be going pretty well but possibly there are some more serious runners who can spot some danger signs for what might happen next. You’ll just have to wait for next week. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if you want to join Team Tansel for this year’s fun run. Maybe

Motor LOCAL The STAY Residential Services community appeal has taken another step forward as work starts on its redevelopment project. The Rotary Club of Hamilton recently donated $1000 to the appeal for STAY to renovate its new head office and activities centre at 46 Brown Street. STAY needs to raise $100,000 from the community for the work in addition to $50,000 donated by Geoff Handbury. The new headquarters will create more opportunities for activities and work experience, and interaction with the community and other service providers for STAY clients. At this stage about $20,000 has been raised but STAY hopes the appeal will be boosted by support from trusts and foundations. Building permits for the renovation have been approved and builder Craig Collins started last week. STAY CEO Maree Sanford said the new building was expected to be in use early next year. She said the appeal is still ongoing but STAY needed to proceed with the project. “We hope that as the community sees the building take shape they will continue to support our appeal,” she said. “We have outgrown our old facilities and need something that is better for staff and clients. Demand continues to grow and we have to grow to meet it.” Any money raised in the ongoing appeal will be put back in reserves to cover the costs spent on the building. Ms Sanford said the Rotary Club of Hamilton’s support was a timely boost for the fund-raising. “We really appreciate that the club has recognised the importance of our work and the need for this new building” she said. their families,” she said. community.

New date & time but same high octane action The ARB Off Road Racing Series is hotting up as it heads into its final round, the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro 400, on the weekend of October 17-19. With the recent release of the series point score after the fourth round, the Albins ARB Goondiwindi 400, the series grand finale is shaping up to be a battle of the classes. Four classes sit in the top five outrights while the top 10 covers five classes. Carl Haby has an impressive lead after 10 ten finishes in the Element #56 Pro buggy at the first four rounds; banking maximum points at round four. Jamie Knight has shown that consistency pays dividends, driving the Knight Bros Racing #439 Extreme 2WD into second place. The ProLites of Andrew McClelland #131 and Luke Erceg #150 take up third and fourth respectively, both teams banking good points from the first three rounds, but failures at the last round saw them awarded outright points, but being one lap down they missed out on the valuable bonus finishing points. Tied for fifth place and the third team to have completed full race distance for the year is the first of the female contingent of drivers Shannyn Fitzgerald, an extraordinary effort for the Super 1650 machine. Sharing fifth outright after an up and down 2014 ARB Off Road Racing Series is Andy Ryan #50. With 65 points for the taking at the final round, it is mathematically possible for any of the aforementioned to walk away with the ARB Off Road Racing Series crown come race end in October. Entries

are rolling in with around 40 teams so far staking their claim on the Tantanoola Pine Forest. With near perfect race conditions expected, and a track of 70.5kilomtres, some of which runs on ground never raced on, and a new ‘big altitude’ drop, the scene is set for a top weekend of off road racing. The Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro 400 moved dates this year from its traditional September timeslot and with footy finals out of the way and the weather on the improve, the stage is set for a classic 2014 event. The Pines Enduro is also the third round of the South Australian Off Road Championships. Friday night’s scrutineering is free and runs from 5-9pm, while all the action on Saturday kicks off at 12.30pm. It includes the Prologue, Top 10 Shootout and Dash for Cash, while the main racing is on Sunday from 8.30am. Food and bar facilities are available with adult tickets $15 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday with children under 15 free.
