Southern Grampians Shire Council will work with local primary schools to coordinate Walk to School activities, after receiving funding from VicHealth. VicHealth’s Walk to School is a month of activity that encourages primary students across Victoria to walk to and from school as often as possible throughout October. Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Cr Albert Calvano said VicHealth’s Walk to School month highlights the benefits of walking for children, such as improving fitness, friendships, their confidence and the environment. “Southern Grampians Shire Council is delighted to be part of this important initiative and will coordinate local Walk to School activities during October including holding healthy breakfasts at local primary schools and developing walking maps with schools,” he said. “Last year we had a small number of local schools participate in Walk to School, and we encourage all local primary schools to get involved this year, to make Walk to School even bigger and better. “We want to encourage more kids to walk, scoot or ride in Southern Grampians Shire because exercise is fantastic for children’s health and it helps reduce congestion on our roads, and reduces the associated environmental impacts.” By getting involved in Walk to School, local primary schools will be helping their students learn healthy habits, and achieve the 60 minutes of physical activity recommended for children each day. All participating schools will receive student certificates to celebrate their students’ achievements, and will be in the running for regional prizes provided by VicHealth. Throughout October, schools and parents are encouraged to help children record their walks using classroom calendars or the Walk to School website and app. VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said children who walk to and from school build healthy lifelong habits, become more familiar with their neighbourhoods and make new friends with other local children. “Unfortunately, Australian children are now among the world’s least active. In the 1960s, one in 20 children were obese and today it’s one in four. “One of the first steps to combat this concerning trend is to encourage kids to walk as often as they can, particularly walking to and from school instead of being driven. “Last year, 30,000 students from more than 300 primary schools in Victoria joined us for Walk to School, walking more than 410,000 kilometres in total and with Southern Grampians Shire Council on board, we hope to exceed those numbers this year.” Local schools can contact Jane Coshutt from Southern Grampians Shire Council on (03)5551 8480 to find out more about local Walk to School activities, or visit www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au for more information.

LOCAL Three hundred Portland district residents have rallied to take a community stand against the damaging impacts of ice and other drugs. The ‘Breaking the Ice’ community forum attracted one of the biggest public gatherings seen in Portland for several years. Glenelg Southern Grampians Drug Treatment Service (GSGDTS) and Portland District Health in conjunction with a network of local services hosted the forum at the Portland Golf Club in response to community calls for more information about ice and other drugs. GSGDTS manager Bev McIlroy said the big turnout showed the community cared and wanted to address local drug problems. “We were thrilled to get such strong numbers,” she said.“From the feedback we received it has put things into perspective for people who realise that ice is a dirty, harmful drug that causes longterm harm for users and families but it is not something the average young person is using.” The forum featured nationallyrecognised specialist in parenting adolescents Dr Michael Carr Gregg and head of information and research at the Australian Drug Foundation Julie Rae and a panel discussion involving police, ambulance, mental health and drug and alcohol professionals. Speakers urged parents to continue to play a positive role in their children’s lives, to encourage them to become involved and engaged, to be good role models and to delay allowing them access to drugs such as ice and alcohol for as long as possible. While ice was the focus of the forum, speakers also stressed the impact of alcohol and said that drinking alcohol remained the most harmful and most commonly used drug. Dr Carr-Gregg said that building resilience among young people and having positive involvement of parents were important keys to successful parenting. in and other activities.

A local family, affected by a serious car accident earlier this year, has been overwhelmed by community support after being handed a generous donation of goods and vouchers to help them rebuild their lives. Drew and Kellie Clark and their three young children received the generous package last week. When Drew was seriously injured, his wife Kellie was left to raise three young children, aged three, five and zero, as well as make regular trips to the city to support her husband’s recovery in Melbourne. Local businesses, including Heywood IGA, Raven’s Nest, Heywood Bakery, Scotty’s Pizza and Portland Toy World, donated goods, food vouchers and raised money for fuel vouchers, while Heywood Kindergarten staff, families and committee members also chipped in with goods and money. Heywood Kindergarten Teaching Director Corinna Bell said she felt so proud and lucky to be part of such a giving and caring community.
Method Grease and line a 20 x 30cm lamington pan with baking paper, allowing the long sides to overhang. Sift the cocoa powder and icing sugar together in a large bowl. Add the rice bubbles and peanuts and toss to combine. Add the copha and stir to combine. Spoon into the prepared pan. Use the back of a spoon to press evenly. Place in the fridge for 1 hour or until firm. Combine the caramel filling and peanut butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

LOCAL “The Whitten Project has been the best experience of my life”. These words, spoken by young leader Blayney Newton at Glenelg Shire’s The Whitten Project graduation ceremony last week, was the perfect end to what has been a lifechanging experience for the 16 future leaders. Mr Newton was one of two young leaders to present a personal reflection at the event and said that prior to The Whitten Project he would never have been capable of standing up in front of a room full of people and presenting a speech. More than 100 guests, including Glenelg Shire Council Mayor John Northcott, filled Portland Golf Club on Monday night to celebrate the achievements of 16 local young people, who were the first regional graduates of The Whitten Project 2014. In true youth leadership program fashion, the graduation event was jointly hosted by young leaders Charlie Ryan and Olivia Cottier and was attended by VIPs Cr Gilbert Wilson, Cr Anita Rank, Cr Robert Halliday, Cr Max Oberlander, CEO Sharon Kelsey and AFL Victoria’s Lachy Patterson and Jock Whiting. Young leader Zoe Shepherd joined Mr Newton in presenting a personal reflection of her involvement, speaking passionately about her improved confidence, social networks, communication and leadership skills gained through active participation in The Whitten Project. Ms Shepherd spoke with a maturity beyond her years that captivated the audience and said that the main message she took from the program was to “live every day”. Young leaders received a framed graduation certificate, The Whitten Project football jumper and commemorative year book in recognition of the commitment, enthusiasm, maturity and personal development demonstrated throughout the six month capacity building initiative. The program is set to run again in 2015.

LOCAL Fundraiser calls for brute strength
Movie of the week
The Equalizer - From September 25 A man believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and has dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by - he has to help her.
Your challenge it this, should you choose to accept it - use brute strength to pull a 22.5 tonne Fennell Forestry B-Double 100 metres for charity. The Truck Pull is on again in 2014, following the success of last year’s inaugural event which netted more than $7500 for charity. This year, the field is open to other teams wanting to give the feat a crack for themselves and race-off against the clock for ultimate truck-pulling glory, all while raising money for well known children’s fundraiser, the SA Variety Bash. The Fennell Forestry Truck Pull Challenge 2014 will be held at the Glenburnie Saleyards on Saturday, October 11, from 10.30am, with the first pull beginning at 11am sharp. The event will see eight-man teams battle it out against the clock, as they work to pull a 22.5 tonne Fennell Forestry Kenworth B-Double and unloaded Thinwall chip trailer along a 100m course and over the finish line. Each team member will be harnessed and attached to ropes anchored to the front grill of the truck and must be prepared to work hard, with each second crucial in what will be a monumental race against time. Spectators are also encouraged to come along, with SA Variety Bash Car #58 to be on site, as well as a barbecue and softdrink available for purchase courtesy of the local Army Cadets. LOCAL Artists from across the south west will now have an online platform to connect, create and communicate through a new website called South West Arts Atlas website going live this month. The South West Arts Atlas is a partnership project for the region supported by the five councils in the Great South Coast Regional Arts Victoria partnership which includes the Shires of Corangamite, Glenelg, Moyne, Southern Grampians and City of Warrnambool, as well as Colac Otway Shire. The South West Arts Atlas is a free regional, inclusive resource specific to the Great South Coast region and based on the Central Highlands Arts Atlas developed by Ballarat City Council as part of a regional networking project. It provides a website for artists, arts organisations and local communities to upload profiles, promote venues, list upcoming events as well as connecting users to a monthly arts newsletter. Regional Arts Victoria Creative Arts Facilitator for the Great South Coast, Jo Grant said she was excited by the launch of this new website and the many benefits it will bring to the region. “The South West Arts Atlas website provides sustainable, consolidated, web-based arts infrastructure in response to the lack of connectivity within the sector. “The website will provide the public with access to what is happening in arts in the region while providing a central hub for artists to connect, interact and collaborate with each other. “Links to funding sources and resources for the community will also be featured increasing information sharing and cultural knowledge in the south west. “It is envisaged that the website will not only be used by artists to connect, but also by the wider public to stay informed about the large amount of events and talented artists who reside in the south west of Victoria,” she added. Naracoorte Lucindale Council has joined the Garage Sale Trail movement and is encouraging people to join in the fun of selling stuff at the Garage Sale Trail on October 25. Naracoorte South Primary School has seized the opportunity to use the Garage Sale Trail as a fund raiser for their school and the Naracoorte Public Library will host a sale of second hand books. Garage Sale Trail now in its 4th year nationally is a day of simultaneous garage sales across the country on October 25 and encourages Australian households, schools, community groups and other organisations to get involved to declutter, reuse, meet their neighbours and make some money. Sellers can register a garage sale for free at garagesaletrail.com.au and shoppers can see what’s for sale in their neighbourhood on the day. The event not only provides people the opportunity to sell unwanted items, but also to shop consciously. Selfconfessed ‘world-class accumulator of stuff’ and Garage Sale Trail ambassador Wendy Harmer believes it’s not that we shouldn’t have material goods but that the stuff we have should be sustainable. “It should be made, purchased and owned with care and a conscience,” Harmer said. The Garage Sale Trail, a national not-forprofit sustainability and community event, has grown exponentially since its inception in 2010. “Garage Sale Trail is a day that liberates the cupboards, garages and attics of Australia that are rammed full of stuff we don’t really need,” Andrew Valder co-founder of Garage Sale Trail said. “It’s a day where we can come together, have some fun, make a few dollars and think about how we can all play our part to live more sustainably,” co-founder Darryl Nichols added.

Naracoorte Caves was inscribed on the World Heritage list 18 December 1994, at the World Heritage committee in Phuket, Thailand. It is now 20 years since World Heritage listing was achieved. To celebrate this significant date the Naracoorte Lucindale Council is hosting a free community event on Friday, November 21 - 20 years of World Heritage on our doorstep, A community celebration of World Heritage Listing for the Naracoorte Caves. The main focus of the Celebration is a School Program during the day consisting of a range of free concurrent activities targeted to primary aged school children, years 3 to 7. These activities will mostly be situated at the Naracoorte Town Hall and/or the Naracoorte Town Square. Professor Flint, the singing palaeontologist, will perform Dancing
with Diprotodons in the Naracoorte Soundshell at lunchtime. Dancing with Diprotodons is the story of South Australia’s pre-history, and the role of the discoveries within the Naracoorte Caves, in the telling of that pre-history. The performance includes interactive songs, hands on fossil sharing and the latest science on all thing prehistoric. Activities in the evening will be held at the Naracoorte Town Hall and will be targeted to adults and families. It’s not fair that only the children have the fun of meeting Professor Flint, the singing palaeontologist, so it’s likely that Professor Flint will make a cameo appearance in the Town Hall in the evening. You might have noticed advertisements starting to appear on the television over the last week or so about the Blue Lake Fun Run. I participated in the “Fun” Run last year. At the time I wanted to remember the fact I nearly died so I recorded some recollections so I wouldn’t forget. I thought I would share it with you over the next couple of weeks. So here goes. Anyone who knows me might wonder how I would end up even participating in a fun run. I’ve said before that “Fun Run” is an oxymoron on a par with “Tupperware Party.” Me entering started about 12 months before last year’s fun run when I found myself sitting in the staff lunch room of my workplace listening to several other work members talk about the Blue Lake Fun run, several of them having participated in the event. I’m the sort of person who likes saying outlandish comments as I enjoy the reactions they elicit from listeners. On this occasion the outrageous comment I decided to share was, “I will commit right here and right now to participate in next year’s Blue Lake Fun Run.” The other character trait I have is that having written the cheque with my mouth I then insist on making my body cash it, despite the fact there may or may not be credit in the bank at the time. On this occasion it’s fair to finish the metaphor off by saying that this bank account was already terribly overdrawn. Nonetheless, I’m not the sort of person who backs down so when another work mate who had heard the commitment entered in 2013, I entered myself. Having entered the Fun Run, it was time to think about establishing a training regime. As a youth I loved nothing better than participating in sporting activities or any number of other physical activities. Participating is the key word there though as I was never particularly talented. Highlights include a first place in a year two hurdles race at Reidy Park Primary School. I was a reasonable long distance runner up until about age 13 highlighted by finishing about 23rd out of 120 kids in a primary school cross country run. I have continued to play weekly social sport into my thirties but certainly wouldn’t consider myself fit. With that in mind you might think I’d put some effort into some training to get myself in some sort of shape. ou’d think, wouldn’t you? To be fair I am in shape. Round is a shape. I read that on a fat guy’s t-shirt
one day. Anyway, for a number of reasons, primarily laziness, I didn’t train at all. Not a single run; not a walk around the Blue Lake to scout the terrain and decide the best places to vomit in a little privacy. Nothing. I have gone through phases in the last 10 years where I would regularly go for walks or good length bike rides. I live close enough to my work place that I walk to and from work a couple of times a week. In all honesty though, I can’t really say that I exercise at the moment. Even the social sport is mainly an excuse to go to the pub with a couple of mates after the game. The last time I participated in a genuine run of any substance happened when I decided to play a season of football at West Gambier about ten years ago. (Go the Westies!) I participated in as much of the preseason as I could fit in my busy schedule. On one training occasion the team were asked to run from the Mount Schank tennis courts, to the volcano itself, up to the top, around the top, back down to the bottom and then around the circumference of the bottom. This was at a time in the club’s history when they never won so you would suggest that as well as having players that were possibly not super talented, they may not have been particularly fit. That makes the result of the run particularly disappointing then. I spent much of the run coming second last, only to have a club mate who obviously had more guts than me shoot past with a couple of hundred metres left. He wasn’t prepared to be the last one home. I didn’t have any pride to protect. Let’s be clear, that was 10 years and about 15 kilograms ago. Having read this maybe you should email me at robbietansel@gmail.com and have a guess how you think the Fun Run might have gone. I’ll tell you a little more next week.

That’s because the Future Leaders of Industry 2014 participant and Bayview College student, filled her duties as if she were already working in the role. Current CEO Sharon Kelsey spent the day with the 16 year old as part of the program, an Alcoa Victorian Operations initiative based on the Alcoa Future Women of Industry program established in Western Australia. Ms Bennett said she had wanted to work under the guidance of Ms Kelsey to widen her knowledge of opportunities for women in Portland. “I hoped to gain skills in public speaking and leadership qualities as well as strategic planning,” she said. “I am particularly interested in public policy making” Ms Bennett is already a community leader in a youth-lead Poverty Movement, where she attends leadership camps and team meetings. Eye allergies — red, itchy, watery eyes that are bothered by the same irritants that cause sneezing and a runny nose among seasonal allergy sufferers — are very common. Seasonal allergies, affect up to 30 percent of adults and up to 40 percent of children. In addition to having symptoms of sneezing, congestion and a runny nose, most of these allergy sufferers also experience itchy eyes, watery eyes, red eyes and swollen eyelids. If you think you have eye allergies, here are a few things you should know — including helpful tips on how to get relief from your red, itchy, watery eyes. What Causes Eye Allergies Normally harmless substances that cause problems for individuals who are predisposed to allergic reactions are called allergens. The most common airborne allergens that cause eye allergies are pollen, mould, dust and pet dander. Eye allergies also can be caused by reactions to certain cosmetics or eye drops, including artificial tears used for treating dry eyes that contain preservatives. Eye Allergy Relief To get relief from your eye allergies and itchy, watery eyes, you can take a few approaches: Avoiding allergens. The best approach to controlling your eye allergy symptoms is to do everything you can to limit your exposure to common allergens you are sensitive to. For example, on days when the pollen count is high, stay indoors as much as possible. When you do go outdoors during allergy season, wear wraparound sunglasses to help shield your eyes from pollen. Removing your contacts lenses. Because the surface of contact lens can attract and accumulate airborne allergens, consider wearing only eyeglasses during allergy season. Or consider switching to daily disposable contact lenses that you discard after a single use to avoid the build-up of allergens and other debris on your lenses. Over-the counter eye drops. Because eye allergies are so common, there are a number of brands of non-prescription eye
and government/community organisations through a structured, informative and interactive event program. The program was introduced at Portland Aluminium in 2005 and has now grown to include partner businesses that actively participate in the program through scholarship sponsorship and participation in program events. In 2011, the GSG LLEN commenced coordinating the program with the assistance and support from Portland Aluminium.

drops available that are formulated to relieve itchiness, redness and watery eyes caused by allergies. If your eye allergy symptoms are relatively mild, over-the-counter eye drops for allergy relief may work very well for you and may be less expensive than prescription eye drops or other medication. Ask your eye doctor to recommend a brand to try. Prescription medications. If your allergy symptoms are relatively severe or overthe-counter eye drops are ineffective at providing relief, you may need your optometrist to prescribe a stronger medication. Prescription eye drops and oral medications used to relieve eye allergies include:• Antihistamines• Decongestants. • Mast cell stabilizers • Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs• Steroids Immunotherapy. This is a treatment where an allergy specialist injects you with small amounts of allergens to help you gradually build up immunity. Eye Allergies Self-Test - Take this quiz to see if you might have eye allergies. Always consult your doctor if you suspect you have an eye condition needing care. • Do allergies run in your family? • Do your eyes often itch, particularly during spring pollen season? • Have you ever been diagnosed with seasonal conjunctivitis? • Are you allergic to certain animals, such as cats? • Do you often need antihistamines and/or decongestants to control sneezing, coughing and congestion? • When pollen is in the air, are your eyes less red and itchy when you stay indoors under an air conditioner? • Do your eyes begin tearing when you wear certain cosmetics or lotions, or when you’re around certain strong perfumes? If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, then you may have eye allergies. Make an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist to determine the best course of action.

Written and compiled by British fan club president Todd Slaughter, with an international Elvis expert Anne E Nixon, The Elvis Archives is a unique tribute to a unique icon.
BOOK OF THE WEEK A Food Lover’s Pilgrimage of France - Dee Nolan
Dee Nolan’s French pilgrimage winds through magnificent and changing landscapes: from Burgundy’s vinecovered slopes to the gastronomic capital of Lyon; up onto the vast windswept meadows of the Aubrac plateau; along the dramatic Lot river; through the gentle hills of Gascony and, finally, to the trout-filled rivers of the Pyrenees.

SOUTH EAST MOUNT GAMBIER
She meets the monks whose medieval predecessors planted the vineyards we see today, visits local markets with some of France’s greatest chefs, cooks traditional recipes in home kitchens and walks with farmers taking cattle to the high pasture. Having returned, after decades, to her own family farm, Dee tells the stories of others for whom a sense of place brings immeasurable meaning to their life and to the food they grow and cook, honouring, as well, those who have gone before..

SENIORS FEATURE Getting better with age TIME HONOURED RECIPES Classic Pavlova 1 tablespoon cornflour 6 eggwhites 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 1/3 cups caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon white vinegar 200ml pure cream 250g frozen raspberries, slightly mashed
Traditional Scones 2 cups plain flour, sifted 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 tablespoon caster sugar 1 egg, at room temperature 1/4 cup canola oil 1/3 cup milk 1/4 cup lukewarm water butter and your favourite jam, to serve Method Place baking tray in oven. Preheat tray and oven to 200°C. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Using a fork, whisk egg, oil, milk and water in a jug. Add egg mixture to dry ingredients. Mix until just combined (the less you work the dough, the better), adding a little more water if required. Turn dough onto a floured board and pat out until 2cm thick. Using a 5cm scone cutter, cut out scones. Place on hot baking tray, allowing a little room for spreading. Bake scones for 10 minutes or until risen and light golden. Serve scones hot with butter and jam.
Method Preheat oven to 200°C. Draw a 24cm (diameter) circle on a sheet of baking paper. Place, pencil-side down, on a baking tray. Dust lightly with 1 teaspoon cornflour. Using an electric mixer, beat eggwhites and cream of tartar in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating constantly until thick and glossy. Add remaining 3 teaspoons cornflour with the last tablespoon of sugar. Fold through vanilla and vinegar. Spoon meringue onto baking paper. Shape into a circle, using the pencil mark as a guide, with a slightly higher edge and a low centre. Reduce oven to 100°C. Bake for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours or until dry and crisp. Turn off oven and open oven door. Cool completely in oven (pavlova may sink during cooling). Slide pavlova onto a serving plate. Spread with cream and top with raspberries. Serve

SENIORS FEATURE Getting better with age PAGE TURNER THE ASSASSINATION OF THE ARCHDUKE - Greg King & Sue Wollmans In The Assassination of the Archduke, Greg King and Sue Woolmans offer readers a vivid account of the lives - and cruel deaths - of Franz Ferdinand and his beloved Sophie. Combining royal biography, romance, and political assassination, the story unfolds against a backdrop of glittering privilege and an Imperial Court consumed with hatred, taking readers from Bohemian castles to the horrors of Nazi concentration camps in a compelling, fascinating human drama. As moving as the fabled romance of Nicholas and Alexandra, as dramatic as Mayerling, Sarajevo resonates with love and loss, triumph and tragedy in a vibrant and powerful narrative. It lays bare the lethal circumstances surrounding that fateful Sunday morning in 1914, examining not only the Serbian conspiracy that killed Franz and Sophie but also insinuations about the hidden powers in Vienna that may well have sent them to their deaths. With a Foreword from the Archduke’s great-granddaughter, Princess Sophie von Hohenberg, and drawing on a wide variety of unpublished sources and with unique access to previously restricted Hungarian and Czech archives, including Sophie’s diaries and family papers, King and Woolmans have written the most comprehensive account of this momentous event available in English. In doing so, they offer readers an intriguing and startlingly revisionist look at this most famous of Archdukes, his family, and their momentous collision with destiny in 1914.
Tempt the tastebuds.. Vanilla Custard 1 cup milk 1 cup thickened cream 1 vanilla bean 4 egg yolks 1 tablespoon cornflour 1/3 cup caster sugar Method Combine milk and cream in a small saucepan. Using a sharp knife, split vanilla bean in half lengthways and scrape out seeds. Add bean and seeds to milk mixture. Place over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes or until hot (do not allow to boil). Remove saucepan from heat. Whisk egg yolks, cornflour and sugar in a heatproof bowl until well combined. Remove vanilla beans from milk mixture. Pour hot milk mixture over egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly. Return mixture to saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for 15 to 20 minutes or until custard thickens and coats the back of a metal spoon (do not allow custard to boil, as it might curdle). Serve custard warm or cold.

It took 50 years but Millicent Football Netball Club finally got to host a Western Border grand final. The weather was sublime, the new netball courts meant the players were playing on the best courts in the association and the often maligned football oval was picture perfect. There were teams competing from all six clubs and the stage was set for a great day of football and netball. The synergy was perfect in the end from a netball perspective as the host club claimed the first ever run of six consecutive A grade premierships and also moved one title clear at the top of the flag table with 12 titles. To be able to claim that piece of history on their home courts and the redeveloped facilities only added to the occasion for the Saints. The netball enjoyed a great day of contests with only the C grade grand final blowing out after South Gambier got off to an unbelievable flyer. The 15 & under saw hot favourites East tested by Norrth before claiming the flag, the 17s was a nailbiter no one saw coming with the undefeated Bulldogs taking the title and the

13s was the sixth close battle between North Gambier and South Gambier with the Tigers claiming the premiership. East Gambier came from the first semi final to claim the B Grade flag and North Gambier broke a 12 year drought in A Reserve. In the football, it was the predicted three-peat for the North Gambier Football Club in the A Grade as the Tigers also claimed the Reserves and 17 & under titles as well, replicating their claiming of the three top titles in 2013. The 15s was back to back for East Gambier, while South Gambier survived a nailbiter and another controversy to cap their season off with the title.

Cream rises to the top as Tigers secure three-peat North Gambier dominated the 2014 Western Border A Grade football grand final taking a 10 goal lead into the final quarter of the premiership decider before some late joy for West Gambier saw the final margin at 29 points. It was a victory built on the class of the Tigers most prized recruits in the past few seasons - coach
• WBFL A Grade best on ground Patrick Perry. Photo courtesy of Frank Monger.
Justin McConnell and Richie O’Grady. McConnell was huge from start to finish, winning a lion’s share of the football and using it so well, while O’Grady defied his serious knee injury to kick nine goals - his smarts, determination and skill saw him the difference in the two sides. There was a glimpse of the future too as Brad Stafford played arguably his best game for the club when it counted most and the ever consistent Brock Egan also influenced contest after contest at McLaughlin Park. The best on ground accolade went the way of Patrick Perry and his three goals and breaking of the lines were also pivotal. If you were to name West Gambier’s best three p[layers for the season you would probably say Tom Holmes, Brad
Wilson and rising ruck star Daron McElroy and they were the three that did everything they could to tame the Tigers but they lacked support and North didn’t really have a passenger. The opening stanza was tight with the Tigers only three points clear. A six goal to two second term saw the Tigers starting to look ominous and by three quarter time, the premiership trophy could have been sent to the engravers. The final margin suggests a contest that could have been in the balance but in reality the seven goal to two final term saw North in celebration mode and the Roos looking to gain some pride - it flatters the Roos and belies the dominance of North.
Saints write themselves into the history books There was a place in history on the line and in the end the Millicent Netball Club was not prepared to let that slip, grinding its way to a record sixth successive title, the first Western Border netball club to secure such a winning run. Saturday’s nine goal victory also means the Saints have eclipsed North Gambier on top of the premiership tally, moving to 12 titles. And it was the usual suspects that ensured
the Saints got the job done against a gallant North Gambier, which arguably played their best match of the season but still fell short. Donna Denton, who was adjudged best on court, did a mountain of work to bring the ball down court and then made good position in the shooting circle and finished accurately, Lisa Duldig worked overtime to limit the influence of Audine Bryant and then ran hard when the Saints had possession to be the key feeder, while Hayley Dunn, who always leaves her best for finals, got a number of critical touches, pressured the shot and rebounded strongly. Danika Jolley showed good composure in her first A Grade decider, while Melinda Squire’s pace was pivotal in the second half as she gave the Saints some fresh legs in attack. For the Tigers, Abbey Duncan stood tall, playing a Denton-like role for North and given the pressure over the shot from Dunn and Alex Walker, finished accurately. Veteran
defender Leanne Cameron certainly created some important opportunities for her team, while Bryant, who would have broken even in her battle with Duldig, did everything in her power to try and lead her side to an upset win. Brianna Walters entered the grand final on the back of two stellar finals performances and again did not let her side down with her work rate and her patience with ball in hand. The first quarter saw the Saints establish an early lead before the Tigers rallied and got back on terms, only to see Millicent to set up a three goal quarter time lead with a strong finish to the quarter. It was a similar situation again in the second and if the Tigers could have finished a little more accurately, the scoreline might have been closer but in the end it was six at the main break. Bryant swung a surprise change, moving Meg Gazzard onto Denton and injecting Lauren Duncan into the clash on the defensive wing. But it’s hard to stop Denton and the star goaler was again the dominant shooter for the quarter, which finished at 14-all and set up an epic last quarter. Bryant and Walters swapped roles but the Saints would not be denied their place in the history books, with Denton taking charge at one end and Dunn wreaking havoc at the other. The final scoreline was 51-42 with Donna Denton’s best on court performance including 43 goals from 49 attempts.

Tigers refuse to be tamed North Gambier entered the clash warm favourites to take out this grand final but Millicent had already notched two hard fought surprise wins in this finals series and from the whistle it was clear they thought they could do it again. As so often happens when Adelaide based Netball SA umpires officiate, the first quarter was all about adjusting to the unfamiliar styles and it certainly took both sides, and their defenders in particular, a while to settle. North was patient in attack and good mates Kerry Bilney and Alisha Bryan connected well, setting up what was a perfect start from the Tigers shooter who converted 14 from 14. At the other end it was teenager Keah Lynch who was the architect of the Saints forward line with Hanna Cooymans providing good drive to find both Lynch and Zoe Brown in good space. At quarter time North held a one goal advantage with the second quarter mirroring the first as the match settled as a genuine arm wrestle. The defensive pressure saw a number of turnovers from both sides. The hard running of Bilney and patient delivery from Alycia Close set up the opportunities for the Tigers, while Lynch continued her high work rate and Lynette Shanks continually got herself to the right spots to ensure the Saints not only stayed in touch but got the game back on level pegging. Millicent injected
experienced, multi premiership wing attack Paula Tunkin into the contest at half time, moving Cooymans to the defensive wing and it paid dividends. Shanks and Tunkin combined well and showed great patience in getting the ball into Brown and Lynch, while at the other end, the Saints really blanketed the Tigers offence, not just creating turnovers but also restricting the shots. The Tigers put up only 10 shots for the quarter to the Saints’ 19 and in the end, North was probably fortunate to only be three goals down at the final change. The Tigers moved Wendy Gray out to goal defence to try and combat Lynch, bringing teenage defender Sienna Allen on under the post to tackle Brown. Lynch was certainly still a factor for the Saints but Allen created plenty of important turnovers and after a goal for goal start to the quarter, North stepped it up a gear at about the halfway mark and once they hit the front there was no stopping them. The club had not played in an A Reserve grand final for 10 years and hadn’t won a flag for 12 and this group was not about to let their chance to break the drought slip. Bryan was again dominant, shooting 11 from 12, while the scoring opportunities started to dry up for the Saints. In the end, North took the flag 46-41 with Bilney named best on court.
East not only enjoyed a lot more possession in this quarter but also found star shooter Wilson much more easily and the State representative converted eight from 11 to help East to a one goal lead by the half. East again swung the changes at the break, injecting the fresh legs of Kimmi Loughhead onto the attacking wing and it was another quarter where Wilson was again the focal point of the shooting circle. Once again, supply was the issue for the Cats. While Guthrie and Pratt continued to work hard defensively, the ball was getting coughed up at the other end, with Loughhead and Hines also taking a couple of critical mid court interceptions that saw the Bulldogs extend their advantage to four by the finals change. But the Cats know the chase position very well in this finals system and they weren’t done for yet. Having changed their line-up during the third quarter, moving Perry, who was struggling with illness, back under the post and also resetting its defensive line with Guthrie taking on Wilson, the Cats thrived with their new look line-up and started to make their move. East, too, made a number of changes with Casey Horrigan and Tori Kitschke rejoining the mid court, Hines moving into the defensive circle and McKay heading to the shooting circle. But while Hines continued to be an influence, the Cats
started to wrest control, showing great patience to work the ball into shooting position, while at the other end, Guthrie and Maya Gorman completely shut down the East attack line. In a seesawing final term, the Cats pressed hard but in the end, time beat any comeback and the Bulldogs secured the premiership with a 27-25 victory. Hines was named best on court.
Bulldogs end Cats dream run East Gambier entered the 2014 17 & under grand final, undefeated and rarely even challenged but Casterton Sandford was determined to make their dream run through the finals count for something. Having come from behind in both the first semi and preliminary final to snatch a last quarter victory, the Cats got off to a much better start against the Bulldogs and it was game on. Tori Perry was the mastermind in the early going of the match as she continually presented for her team mates and then drove hard to find good space in the shooting circle where she converted a perfect five from five. The Cats were patient in offence, while the same could not be said for the Bulldogs, who continued to cough up possession, looking unsure, and finding the defensive checking of Tayla Guthrie and Chloe Pratt tough to combat. East did settle late though as they started to find Mary Wilson in range and by the first break it was a two goal advantage to the Cats. East reacted to the sluggish start by moving joint league runner-up best and fairest Rachael Hines into the centre and the drive and connection with the goalers started to improve for East in the second, while at the other end, Eilish McKay and Roxy Anderson-Gibson started to make life a little tougher for Perry and Claire Outtram, restricting their opportunities.
Shooters lead Bulldogs to 15 & under title It was always going to be a tough ask for North Gambier but the young Tigers came out, determined to compete hard against hot favourites East Gambier and it paid off. The Tigers went toe to two with the Bulldogs as Lauren Ross controlled with mid court and connected well with her goalers Georgia Hood and Molly Watson who finished strongly. In the end it was a late surge from the Bulldogs as Tenille Gray and Keelie Amy started to find better space and more easily, that the Bulldogs secured a five goal quarter time buffer. Kaitlyn Horrigan entered the clash for North at quarter time on the defensive wing and again the Tigers competed strongly early with Hood hitting some crucial long range attempts under all sorts of defensive pressure from Brenna McKay. But the hard running of Lauren Pike through the mid court started to become critical as again it was the Bulldogs finishing with a flourish and extending their lead to 11 at the half. The strong holding game of Amy and well timed drives from Gray were starting to cause some headaches for the Tiger defenders,
Tense battle ends with Tiger victory North Gambier and South Gambier had played five tight battles this season heading into the title decider and it was obvious the grand final would be no different. No more than five goals had separated the two in the previous encounters and the opening quarter was a typical goal for goal battle. It was a battle of the defences as Tayla Wilson-Smith and Sharna McKinnon created some important touches for North and Jordyn Adam and Claudia Edmonds did the same for South and by quarter time after some good finishing from Nyah Allen and Imogen Walker, it was South with a narrow one goal advantage at the first change. The Demons dominated the early going in the second as Adams and Edmonds continued to get their hands on the ball and with Ruby Hickman and Mackenzie Winterfield finding good position on the circle’s edge, South started to generate extra scoring opportunities and a small three goal buffer but by the half it was all tied up as Olivia Patzel finished strongly under the post for North to capitalise on the late turnovers. The third quarter was all about the shooters as Patzel was the main target for the Tigers and Giorja Jarnevic for the Demons. Patzel converted sic from six and Jarnevic six from eight as Tyne Bosko started to work
her way into the game at centre for North to become their main link player, with Winterfield doing a lion’s share of the attacking for the Demons. Things were all tied up still at the final change with South bringing on the fresh legs of Jessica McGregor to the defensive wing. And it was the Demons who started the final quarter the best, adding three quick goals courtesy of some desperate defensive efforts from Edmonds and good reading of the play by Adams with Jarnevic and Walker finishing well. The match then went into a holding pattern for a few minutes as both sides started to make basic errors under the pressure. Some misfeeds from the Demons saw Wilson-Smith and McKinnon create some critical turnovers and Patzel and Allen ensured they got full value for money, shooting at 100 percent for the quarter. The Tigers, in fact, peeled off six goals in succession to turn the three goal deficit into a three goal lead and were never headed. Edmonds and Adams continued to create turnovers and Walker worked hard but in the end, the Tigers were a touchy steadier when it counted and secured the 28-25 victory. Winterfield was named best on court for her hard running efforts at wing attack for South.

despite Sarah Flett working overtime and getting her hands to some of the aerial feeds and keeping the Tigers in striking distance. North certainly wasn’t put off by the 11 goal half time deficit and with Flett, Morgan Fisher and Ross managing to create some turnovers, the Tigers looked set to make a charge but unfortunately the accuracy that had been their trademark in this finals series deserted them a little, allowing McKay to dominate the rebounding and despite all the hard work, it was 12 goals at the final change. Amy and Gray did not register a miss in the critical third quarter, while the Tigers, thanks in no small part to the pressure over the shot of McKay, missed eight and in the end, the likelihood of a comeback evaporated. The Tigers were nothing if not tenacious though and continued to fight on in the last, winning the quarter by one to see East emerge as the premiers with a 55-44 win. Gray was outstanding and clearly the go to player for the Bulldogs and not surprisingly was named bets on court.

Shooters from both teams dominate as East hangs on for victory B Grade has been the most closely contested grade all season and the finals series had reflected that thus far, setting up a tense grand final between Casterton Sandford and East Gambier. The highlight of this game was the stunning shooting from both teams across all four quarters in what was easily the best shooting performance of the day. Not that the defenders didn’t put plenty of pressure on their opponents, they certainly did, making it difficult for the goalers to get the ball in good position but both attack lines were prepared to work hard to keep moving the ball until
a good shot opened up. By quarter time, Casterton Sandford had managed to set up a one goal lead, with Kate Bruce-Smith converting nine from 10 to be the main focal point for the Cats. The second quarter was the Bindi Davis show as the East coach and goal attack started to really dominate the attacking end for the Bulldogs, working the angles and using her feeders to great effect to set up some good scoring opportunities. Davis converted 13 from 16 for the quarter, turning the defensive stops from Rachelle McKay and Lauren Pike into scoreboard pressure, and by the main break, the Bulldogs had wrested the lead and held a two goal advantage. One of the key battles of the day was through the middle with youngster Tori Kitschke going head to head with Casterton Sandford’s Bridie Tierney and the duo were the key link players for their respective sides. Tierney is one of the premier mid courters in the B Grade competition and her teenage opponent stepped up to the challenge, limiting Tierney’s usual huge influence and being a key player for her own side.
In the third quarter, the East defenders again just restricted the opportunities for the Cats shooting duo, which was just as well, as Bruce-Smith and Teagan McIntosh were converting well. At the other end, accuracy was also the name of the game from the shooters and with Issy Dihm working her way into the contest to share the load with her coach and by the final change, East had worked their way to a five goal lead. The final quarter saw BruceSmith and Davis trading goals as the Cats looked to eat into the lead and East looked to protect it. East again just won the quarter to ensure they were the 2014 premiers. Bruce-Smith did all she could converting 10 from 11 with the back space opening up for the accurate shooter courtesy of the hard running and front cutting of McIntosh, while Davis was almost unstoppable, converting 12 from 13 in the tense last quarter. Kitschke was named best on court for her four quarters of hard running in centre.
Demons take charge early to claim premiership In the end, it was the first 10 minutes of this match that set up the victory as minor premiers South Gambier jumped out of the blocks, moving the ball with precision in attack and blanketing the Cats in defence. Tash Attiwill, Bri Fuller and Ellie Patzel created turnover after turnover for the Demons and with Cindy Burford and Danielle Lewis connecting strongly with goalers Lorelie Ellis and Jaymee O’Neill, there seemed nothing the Cats could do to stop the early charge. South piled on 17 goals for the quarter, with O’Neil converting a perfect eight from eight, while the Cats managed only six and the 11 goal buffer could have been worse, were it not for a solid end to the quarter with Hana Layely finishing with good accuracy. The Demons again dominated the second quarter but the accuracy of the first quarter deserted the shooting duo and despite having 22 attempts, South actually lost the quarter by three with Layley again the chief target, converting eight from 10 to see her side back into the contest. Kathryn Gill-Killey started to become a factor through the middle of the court and Maya Gorman’s move to goal keeper started to pay dividends with
her pressure over the shot and strong rebounding and Casterton Sandford looked set to be working back into the contest. But the third quarter again saw the Demons in control. Attiwill, Fuller and Patzel again created plenty of turnovers with their athleticism and pace onto the ball and once again, Ellis and O’Neil had the radar turned back on and converted well from a swag of opportunites, winning the quarter 15-4 to take a 19 goal lead into the final quarter. Keelin Winterfield was injected into the contest in the final quarter as reward for being the team’s regular fill-in during the season and her fresh legs ensured the Demons didn’t drop away despite their match winning lead. The Cats also brought some fresh legs into the contest with 17 & under player Hannah Waters moving into centre and in the end the final stanza was a goal for goal battle with Layley again making the most of her opportunities and O’Neil showing great accuracy at the other end. South did manage to slightly extend its lead to secure the biggest win of the day 54-33. Fuller was named best on court for her tireless defensive efforts and strong driving through the mid court.

Panthers & Cougars win winter basketball titles Panthers Women and Cougars Men are the 2014 Winter South East Coast Basketball Premiers. The two grand finals were hosted by the Millicent Basketball Association last Wednesday night after the Millicent Women won that right with a second semi-final victory against Cougars. Panthers Women finished in third place on the premiership table after a very shaky start to the season when they forfeited the first two games because of lack of numbers. Despite playing with the bare minimum of players most weeks, they developed confidence in each other and a degree of self-belief, which were evident in their solid grand final performance against the minor premier, Millicent, on their home court. The Women’s final opened with end to end transitions and few conversions. Millicent had plenty of possessions but only troubled the scorer twice. Panthers faired a little better through Kelly Lockwood, Alycia Close and Brianna Walters. A Walters’ long range prayer found the hoop on the first quarter buzzer to set the score at 12-4. The second stanza was an even low scoring slog resulting in a half time score of 23-16.
The momentum lifted a little in the third quarter as Walters took a grip on Panthers’ offence to score 9 points on the back of some strong clean-up work from Brenna McKay and sister Eilish, who was effective with her usual “one percenters” to create opportunities for her side. Panthers managed to hang on to a lead in the mid-teens in the final quarter as Lockwood, playing with new found confidence, was active in offence. Not to be denied, Millicent finished with a flurry of points from the energetic Erin Watson. Lockwood however steadied her side with a three to secure the title for Panthers, 55-44 with seconds on the clock. Walters scored a game high 19 points, Brenna Mckay chipped in with 12 and Lockwood 11. Alex Walker and Watson led the scoring for Millicent with 11 and 10 respectively. Walters was awarded the MVP for the title game. Men’s minor premier, Bulldogs’ flag hopes took a nose dive when injured Matthew Berkefeld did not suit up on Wednesday night. This absence placed added responsibility on brother, Simon. Typical of his ability and dedication, Simon nevertheless led Bulldogs in

a strong start. Sam Stafford was also impressive for Cougars in the opening minutes when he nailed three threes. Kane deWit and Brendon Armitage lifted the momentum for Cougars and set up a two point lead at the main break as Bulldogs struggled to find support for Berkefeld. In the opening minutes of the all-important third quarter, Zach deWit broke the game open for Cougars with three three pointers and control from here on. Stafford and Kane deWit continued as consistent scorers while Bulldogs’ scoring options all but dried up. At three quarter time it was game over as Cougars led 70-53. Bulldogs deserve credit for their “never beaten” approach in outscoring Cougars in the final 10 minutes, when 6 of their players scored. Meanwhile Kane deWit and Stafford showed fine touch from the perimeter. Stafford’s game high 32 points in Cougars’ 86-76 win earned him the MVP Award for the final while Berkefeld finished with 26 in a tough night at the office. The 2014/15 SECBL Summer season gets underway on Wednesday, October 15.

Motor LOCAL Sheep and beef farmers in south-west Victoria are being challenged to match their dairy counterparts in producing quality silage. A field day at Coleraine on September 18 hosted by the Western District branch of the Grassland Society of Southern Australia will help producers to make better silage. The field day will cover a range of topics about silage making and its advantages in sheep and beef production systems. Participants will also take a field trip to John and Lachie Tindall’s dairy farm, north east of Casterton to see silage making in action. During the field day that starts at 9.30am at the Coleraine Bowls Club, pasture and fodder conservation specialist Frank Mickan will outline the best methods for making quality silage. Pasture nutritionist Phil White will talk about nutritional and fertiliser requirements for grass to grow and the best species to produce silage, and livestock consultant Graham Lean will discuss the costs associated with making hay and silage. Western District Grassland Society branch president Dr Steve Cotton said that while many dairy farmers were good at making silage, beef and sheep farmers were less successful. Dr Cotton said the field day would be informative and valuable for farmers. People wishing to attend should RSVP to Dr Cotton on 0447 352 321. The field day costs $30 which includes morning tea and lunch.
ADVERTORIAL I Donehue’s Leisure Centre Jurgens Caravans – More Bang for Your Buck - Limited Time Jurgens caravans have always represented the perfect blend of style, function and great value for money. For a limited time they are even better. The More Bang for Your Buck Sale available at Donehue’s Leisure gives you the chance to grab up to $5,750 worth of bonus options. The great thing is you can pick and choose options / extras that suit you from Jurgens factory options or aftermarket options. There’s limited stock – so get into Donehue’s Leisure in Hamilton or Mt Gambier before you miss out. Jurgens Caravans highly regarded range has something for everyone. The flagship of the caravan range is 23ft, dual axle Tooradin. It’s incredibly spacious, luxuriously appointed and ideal for extended touring. Also available in 23ft is the family van version known as the Narooma. It is available in double or triple bunk versions and can sleep up to 5. The ever popular, 21 ft, dual axle Lunagazer is a decent sized touring van yet is still light enough to be towed with a regular family sedan such as a Ford Falcon. Moving along the line, the 18ft Skygazer is the largest single axle offering which is spacious enough for extended trips and nimble enough for weekend getaways. The compact 16 ft Sungazer shares many of the same features as the larger models including full shower and toilet achieved through clever use of space. The cheery Sungazer shines through with its ability to accommodate small tow vehicles
such as compact SUVs and many mid size family cars. The pop top series add a breath of fresh air to the Jurgens range. The 18ft Jindabyne is graced with outstanding features including
comprehensive kitchen, spacious dining area and a luxurious bed. Despite an inexpensive price tag, the 15ft Wallaroo shares many of the same great features and opens the experience to people
with quite small tow vehicles. See the full range at Donehue’s Leisure or learn more at jurgens.com.au
