LOCAL Children’s health in focus at Portland
LOCAL Stories after dark
New clinical services for children will be available at Portland District Health from the start of next month. Dr Rachna Verma is a senior registrar in paediatrics and will be available to see children referred by their general practitioner or other doctors. It is the first time for many years that PDH has had a resident doctor working in paediatrics. The new service also follows the expansion of Portland’s obstetric arrangements with the recruitment of obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr David Morris who has joined Drs Ghazala Irshad and Fariha Irshad and experienced midwives in the expanded PDH maternity team. Dr Verma said she is looking forward to helping put a smile back on the faces of local children.“It makes it all worthwhile when you see a sick child and then a few days later you see them with lovely smiles on their faces,” she said. Acting director of medical services Peter Morton said the additional service would be of great benefit to local families.“It’s an important service for children that saves them and their families from having to travel to Warrnambool or further to see a doctor,” Dr Morton said. Dr Verma will be working out of the specialist centre from September 1 and will work in conjunction with other agencies involved in the care of children, including schools and Aboriginal health groups. She will see children only by referral. Her role at PDH also includes work in the hospital emergency department. Dr Verma arrived in Portland in May with her husband Dr Anil Xavier who is a consultant physician and nephrologist
The Mount Gambier Library will be celebrating National Reading Hour this Tuesday by opening the library for a special after dark bedtime story session in the Children’s Cave area, between 6pm and 7pm. The whole family is invited to this fun session; come in your pjs, enjoy some lovely bedtime stories and finish with a supper of Milo and cookies. The Reading Hour aims to promote and celebrate the joy of reading in all its forms and will be celebrated nationally with parents and children reading simultaneously across Australia. Jaclyn Gosling, The Mount Gambier Library’s children’s services development officer said it’s not always possible for parents to share a book at bedtime with their children. “But if you can manage just 10 minutes most nights, your child will have the best chance of becoming a good reader, with the social and educational benefits that it brings,” she said. Twice a week on a Tuesday and Friday at 10.30am the Mount Gambier Library runs a dedicated Storytime Session aimed at under five year olds. “Storytime is more than just a book,” said Mrs Gosling. “Reading, talking, singing and playing with children helps their developing brains make the necessary connection for future learning and wellbeing and also helps develop skills, imagination and creativity that will build a strong foundation for future development.” Parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts are encouraged to bring down children of all ages to the After Dark Reading Hour and help reignite the magic of reading. In conjunction with
with PDH. She graduated in her native India and has spent the past 11 years working in paediatrics in the United Kingdom. “Even when I was a medical student I knew I wanted to work in paediatrics,” she said. Dr Verma will become a fellowed paediatric consultant after a further 10 months of local training in Australia. PDH will now be able to help children with a variety of problems, reducing the need to go out of town for support. “We will be offering a broad range of services for children and to support GPs,” Dr Verma said. Some more complex cases will continue to be referred to Warrnambool or other hospitals. Dr Verma is excited about the opportunities in Portland and the feeling is mutual.“The community seems excited to have me here,” she said. “Everyone is very friendly and stop and talk to me when I walk down the street.”

Glenelg Shire Council will begin work on two fire access road projects after successfully receiving funding under the State Government’s Fire Access Roads Subsidy Scheme (FARSS). A priority list of requests from Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigades, including the two projects to receive the FARSS funding this month, was endorsed by Glenelg Shire Council at the April Council Meeting and followed a recommendation from the Glenelg Municipal Fire Management Planning Committee (AoC). The total funding approved under FARSS for these two projects was $4833, with Council contributing $11,541. The first project will provide improved access to water supply from a fire plug at the intersection of Lindsay Road and Lang Street at Dartmoor. The $13,374 cost for this project will cover the supply of CFA recommended fittings, road construction adjacent to the location and the cost of upgrading street lighting at the intersection. Secondly, Newton Road at Bridgewater will be cleared of vegetation at the northern end, where it intersects with Knights and Parkers Road, to allow access for emergency vehicles. The total cost for this second project will be $3000, with State Government funding of $1500. FARSS funding is available through the Country Fire Authority (CFA) as co-contribution for three types of projects to improve capabilities in the event of fire. The funding is provided by the State Government, and administered by the CFA, to assist with fire access road construction, static water supplies and fire access road maintenance. The two Glenelg Shire projects have been scheduled for completion prior to the 2014/15 fire danger period.

LOCAL LOCAL A little touch of Broken Hill in the Limestone Coast A boost to children’s services in Hamilton
Former Broken Hill resident Christy Radford has officially opened her latest photography exhibition entitled ‘A little touch of home’. On a recent trip to Broken Hill, Ms Radford spent a week photographing the area and is now exhibiting those images at Zema Estate Wines in Coonawarra. This is Ms Radford’s fifth exhibition for the SALA festival, South Australia Living Artists, an innovative open access visual arts festival presenting thousands of artists through unique collaborations and exhibitions in hundreds of exhibition spaces
throughout metropolitan and regional South Australia. “Broken Hill is my home town and it’s so exciting to be able to show some special places to the community that I now call home,” Ms Radford said. Jodie Smith from Zema Estate said the whole Zema family was excited to be hosting Christy’s exhibition. “It’s great to be able to showcase our amazing local talent,” she said. The exhibition runs for the month of August at Zema Estate Wines in Coonawarra, for more details please visit www.withlovephoto.com.au
Southern Grampians Shire Council Family Day Care service has welcomed the addition of two new Family Day Care educators in Hamilton. Dianne Evans has returned to family day care after nine years absence. During that time, she has worked in the long day care sector and in administration, and has also become qualified by attaining her Diploma of Children’s Services. Dianne’s desire to again provide a family day care service from her home was triggered by her need to fit in with her own family’s needs and her belief in the benefits of home-based care and education. “I enjoy working with a smaller group,” Dianne said. “Only four pre-school children can be in care at the one time and this allows for greater individual attention. The home environment creates a very comfortable, relaxed and engaging atmosphere. I am also able to provide the children with opportunities to be a part of their local community by going on outings to the park, the library and playgroup.” Madi Sebbens is new to the early year’s field and is currently studying her Certificate III in Children’s Services whilst she works from home and cares for her young daughter, Zara. “I’ve always enjoyed being around young children and watching them develop and grow, so working in

the early years field as a Family Day Care Educator seemed like the perfect opportunity,” Madi said. “I can now be part of helping the children grow and develop, work, study and still be at home with my daughter.” Southern Grampians Shire Council children’s services coordinator Lyn Hodkinson said they were thrilled to have two new services available to shire families. “It is important that parents have the opportunity to choose the child care and education service that best suits their child,” she said. “Family Day Care also provides an avenue for those, like Dianne and Madi, wishing to work in the early year’s field and with the desire to operate from their own home.” Anyone interested in becoming a Family Day Care Educator or wishing to access Family Day Care for their child can contact Southern Grampians Shire Children’s Services Coordinator, Lyn Hodkinson on (03)5551 8484 or email lhodkinson@sthgrampians.vic. gov.au.
Two Colour Harmony – Hamilton Quilters From September 8 HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON The Hamilton Quilters have been delighting Western Victoria with their skill and creativity with this popular medium for more than 30 years & this is their 16th exhibition.
LOCAL The future of a program that helps the most vulnerable young people in the Glenelg and Southern Grampians regions is in doubt due to funding uncertainty. The Glenelg Southern Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network (GSG LLEN) has helped to broker a return of $6.2 million for local schools and education providers in the past four years to support innovative education pathways and infrastructure. The network has facilitated and supported many vital programs in the region, including the Future Leaders of Industry, Portland Reengagement Program, Southern Grampians and Glenelg youth networks, Koorie career and aspirations programs, Dunkeld Food and Fibre Careers Conference and range of industry careers taster programs such as the recent Careers in Health Program. It has been an active member in highlighting the issue of the Great South Coast Year 12 or Equivalent project, providing backbone support for the establishment of local action planning groups to address the issue at a local level. However, the future of LLENs across Victoria beyond 2014 is in doubt. The Victorian Government has not yet confirmed funding after this year and the Federal Government has withdrawn its funding for the program. GSG LLEN Executive Officer Anne Murphy said the LLENs were negotiating with the State Government and hopeful of ongoing commitment.“It would be a huge loss for our region if the LLEN could not continue its collaborative and brokering role to instigate and support programs that help needy young people,” she said. Mrs Murphy said the network needed surety of funding for ongoing planning and to respond to new challenges.

ADVERTORIAL I Gardenarium Spring is just around the corner With spring just around the corner and buds starting to burst it’s time to finish all those end of winter gardening jobs. All pruning of roses, deciduous trees and fruit trees will be well under way, if not finished, and it is important to make sure you have applied a winter spray of lime sulphur straight after pruning to clean up any overwintering pests and diseases. Also on the important list is copper sprays for stone fruit trees, such as peaches and nectarines, to avoid the attack of curly leaf. This is going to be more prevalent this year with the continuous rain and finding dry days to get sprays on is hard. All you can do is try your best. This season has seen the release of the new curly leaf free peaches and nectarines, so if you have
been struggling for years to contain it now is the time to invest in an easy care tree. We currently have them $14.15 off their normal price in the sale. The time for planting dormant deciduous trees and fruit trees is drawing to a close also. Stone fruit and almonds are bursting in to life so this week should be the last opportunity to plant these from bare rooted trees. We have an end of winter clearance on these at only $19.95 along with a few other specials running on from the end of our huge tree sale. Potted specimens on the other hand can be planted all year round, so don’t panic too much if you haven’t got time. Now is also the time to be applying the first of the seasons fertilisers and with all this lovely rain should be easily washed in. This should be applied around the drip line of mature trees and fruit trees and around 30cm out from the base of roses. We have been having fantastic results with a new rose fertiliser on to the market a few years ago. It is now available to the home gardener as it was used mainly by us professional growers in the past. It has higher amounts of potash, so important for disease prevention and colour and quantity of blooms plus being coated with iron which is an added bonus in our predominantly alkaline soils, should make your roses the glossiest they have ever been. Our staff are always eager to help with any enquiries you may have with regard to pruning roses and feeding as we own Limestone Coast Roses as well, so all staff are fully versed on roses. The deciduous magnolias are looking great at the moment around the region and bursting forth with their goblet shaped blooms on the bare branches. We have 25% off all of these in our sale including the sought after Black Tulip and denudata varieties and the new fairy magnolia also. Come in for a look at their stunning display and grab a bargain
at the same time. Most of our bare rooted deciduous ornamental trees are selling out and as the they burst back in to life we will have to withdraw them from sale for potting on. We have clearance specials on fruiting figs, peaches and nectarines, mop top trees and weeping flowering cherries, so don’t leave planting too long, make the most of the great rain to settle everything in. In the Pot Shop there is a whole new range of goodies from my recent buying trip starting to filter through. Unusual gardening orientated gifts, wall art, gardening tools (ideal for Fathers Day) and cast iron fire pits in several sizes, ideal anytime of the year to warm up the
outdoor living areas and of course outdoor furniture from all corners of the globe. Some stunning new solid mahogany birdhouses and dovecotes in limited numbers are also available. Normally this is not the time of year we think about purchasing outdoor furniture but we have a few specials on benches, arches and table and chair settings to clear to make way for the new seasons stock coming through and at these prices you wont want to miss out. Gardenarium is situated on Bay Road (Riddoch Hwy) 1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake roundabout. Or punch 167, Bay Road Moorak in to your GPS. See website for maps and details.
DID YOU KNOW...?? The male lyrebird, which is native to Australia, can mimic the calls of over 20 other birds. If that’s not impressive enough, he can also perfectly imitate the sound of a camera, chainsaw and car alarm.

Hamilton’s new soccer ground, the latest sporting facility to be established at Pedrina Park, was officially opened on Sunday by State Government Member for Lowan, the Hon. Hugh Delahunty. Hamilton Soccer Club and the Southern Grampians Shire Council have been working for many years to develop this facility. Soccer had been identified as a growing sport for the area and was included in council’s masterplan for Pedrina Park in 2007. The project has been funded by a partnership of Hamilton Soccer Club, Southern Grampians Shire Council and the State Government of Victoria through its Community Facility Funding Program. The project was given an early boost by a very generous donation from local benefactor, Dr Geoff Handbury. Pedrina Park Soccer Field and Multipurpose Oval Development will ensure the continued growth of soccer within the region. The new facilities will also see the growth of social soccer across the region. Hamilton Soccer has 200 actively participating members, with ages ranging from five to fifty years of age. The club has experienced over 20% growth in the last three years and this expansion is expected to continue well into the future with this brand new facility. Hamilton Soccer Club current plays in the Warrnambool and District Soccer League (WDSL). The inclusion of competition lighting will allow for night games to a semiprofessional level. This will improve the clubs ability to host night matches, attracting larger crowds and support. The construction of the Multipurpose Oval to the north of the soccer field will allow use as a cricket oval, two hockey fields, two soccer fields, an AFL oval and an athletic field.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
The Political Bubble Mark Latham Australians once trusted the democratic process. While we got on with our lives, we assumed our politicians had our best interests at heart. Not anymore. That trust has collapsed. Mark Latham joined the Labor Party in the late 1970s hoping to improve people’s lives through parliamentary service. Twenty-five years later, the Opposition Leader ended up as disillusioned as the rest of us. The scorching honesty of The Latham Diaries ensured he’d burned his political bridges, but ostracism from the Canberra Club has its advantages. In The Political Bubble Mark Latham is free to explore how parliamentary democracy has lost touch with the people it’s supposed to represent. As with most institutions at risk, politics has become more tribal, with left- and right-wing fanatics dominating formerly robust, mainstream parties. After the disappointment of the Rudd/Gillard years, Tony Abbott promised to restore trust in Australian politics but, as with most of his promises, it was dispensable. The Political Bubble looks at the new government’s policies - how Abbott is adding to distrust, not solving the problem. What can be done about this democratic deficit? Can our parliamentary system realign itself with community expectations or has politics become one long race to the bottom?
COLLECTED STUPIDITY War....what is it good for??... by Robbie Tansel I’m a bit over wars. They really seem a bit unnecessary these days, don’t you think? Obviously I’m thinking of what is going on in Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, and Iraq again at the moment. Whenever you turn on your tele and see a war there are people dying and surely that’s not good for them. I bet that wasn’t what they were hoping for. So that’s why I think we should ban wars. Surely in the year 2014 we can come up with a better way to deal with our problems? Surely everyone realises by now that when we have a war people get hurt. We don’t want people to get hurt. So let’s come up with a new plan. Here’s what I’m thinking: instead of having a war the leaders (normally politicians who are not at any risk of getting hurt) engage in a spirited game of chess. I’m pretty sure this would be successful for a variety of reasons. Like I said, firstly plenty of poor unfortunate soldiers aren’t sent to their death. Secondly instead of electing some moron who’s good at talking about themselves you’ll want to vote for a person who is really good at chess. People who are good at chess are normally smart. Imagine if we had politicians who were smart, not just cunning and self-centred. I’m not convinced that peace is that much safer than war to be honest.
Just think of all the pictures of peacekeepers you’ve ever seen over the years. There they are in some country that requires their services to keep the peace. And what’s the first thing you’ll notice in a picture of a peacekeeper? Okay a sky blue beret with military khakis. What was the person who designed that outfit thinking? But after the beret, you’ll find that the peacekeepers are the ones with the biggest guns. The message is that there is no peace without giant big guns. If you think that through logically guns probably are a great way to create peace. If people keep shooting each other, you’ll eventually end up with just one person left. And then there’ll be peace. Unless they’re bipolar or something I guess? Maybe they should have a look at Ireland for some hints of how to sort out wars. They had huge issues there for decades but it’s all sorted now. I’ve actually done some research into how they sorted things out there and found the following. There were a number of strategies employed. One of these was they airdropped thousands of packets of M & Ms with instructions to put them in alphabetical order. They also delivered thousands of shovels across the country and told them to take their pick. Another clever tactic was to put them in round
rooms and tell them to sit in the corner…I could keep going but for everyone’s sake I won’t. The other thing about wars is they cost a lot of money. My research indicates that in 2013 the world’s military expenditure was 1.75 trillion dollars. Let me put this scenario to you. Instead of governments spending billions and billions of dollars on their military to get what they want, leading to millions of deaths on all sides, often including innocent children, why not talk to the other side and say, “This is the money we were going to spend trying to kill you. Instead of doing that we’d like to give you this money to relocate and find a better life somewhere a long way away from us.” I know. It’d never work. They’d just use the money to buy more guns. My other plan is why don’t we just wipe these countries out.
Seriously these psychos have outdated and limited weaponry. I say they just bomb them out of existence and then give the military-money to the Mount Gambier Council to lay out some grass, plant some palm trees and build a stormwater catchment. With all that sand and the lovely sunny weather, I’m sure they’d be able to turn it all into something really nice. I’m pretty sure none of this makes any sense. I’d say it’s because the sugar embargo continues in my life so feel free to email me some tasty snacks at robbietansel@gmail.com

LOCAL Study confirms regional students doing it tough
Veterans funding restored Member for Barker, Tony Pasin, last week welcomed the restoration of Australian Government funding to assisting ex-service organisations (ESOs) continue their important work with the local veteran community. Mr Pasin said the South East Veterans Information Centre (SEVIC), sponsored by the RSL Mt Gambier Sub Branch will receive $6249.40 under the restored Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program. BEST grants assist the largely voluntary ESO workforce to help the veteran and defence communities, and their families, access Department of Veterans’ Affairs entitlements and services. Overall 141 organisations will share in a total of nearly $3.8 million (GST Exclusive) in funding allocated in BEST Round 16. Mr Pasin said this round of BEST funding included an additional $1 million
reinstated as part of the 2014-15 Budget. “The Abbott Government has restored advocacy and support funding for the veteran community which was cut by Labor.,” Mr Pasin said. “The 2014-15 budget provides an additional $1 million per year to the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) programme over the forward estimates. This funding will support the work of veterans’ advocates in helping veterans, war widows and widowers to access important information and services. The additional funding will support the work of veterans’ advocates, welfare and pension officers right across the country and provide them with greater certainty into the future.” The Government consulted with the ESO community to determine how best to spend the additional money and these changes have been actioned. BEST grants help ESOs fund a range of veteran support measures including salaries for trained advocates and pension staff, and administrative needs, including essential office supplies such as computer equipment and internet access. For more information on DVA grants visit www.dva.gov.au/ grants or call 133 254 or 1800 555 254 for regional callers.

South-west Victorian students are deferring their university courses at double the rate of the rest of Victoria. The latest On Track data shows 18.8 per cent of finishing 2013 students in south-west Victoria deferred their courses, compared to 9.4 per cent state-wide. And a new report has called for students in the southwest and other regional areas to receive more financial, social and accommodation support to overcome significant barriers in accessing higher education. The Deferring a University Offer in Victoria report recommends affordable and supportive accommodation options near Melbourne educational institutions, and more course, career, financial and social guidance, particularly in the first two years out of school. The report brings together six years of research and reveals that young people from nonmetropolitan areas defer their university offer at twice the rate of their metropolitan counterparts and that nearly 40 per cent of deferrers fail to take up the offer after a year. Financial stresses and travel-related factors are the biggest barriers for rural and regional students and many struggle to make the social transition after leaving home. Many students found the process of demonstrating eligibility for government financial support frustrating, and said it influenced the choices they make. The report confirms the proportion of rural and regional students who complete Year 12 and continue to university is substantially lower than in Melbourne. It says the challenges faced by non-metropolitan young people are significant and often prevent
them from accessing or even aspiring to higher education. The report was presented on August 14 to the Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Nick Wakeling and is based on longitudinal research by John Polesel, Malgorzata Klatt and Brigid Freeman, from the University of Melbourne. The research was originally started in 2008 and funded in 2009 by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and is supported by the Victorian Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) and the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVic). South West LLEN Acting CEO Helen Bayne said country kids are just as capable as their city counterparts but their opportunities are hindered by costs and travel barriers. “Country students deserve equality in accessing further education,” Ms Bayne said. “This report confirms they don’t have equal access and need more support. We know this is a problem and have the evidence-based research to prove it, now we need government policies to address this inequity. The number of jobs today that demand a university qualification is increasing and this trend will continue in the future and our local young people deserve the same chance as city kids.” Professor Polesel said rural and regional students have a double disadvantage due to the financial and social capacity of the young person and their family to support relocation. “Young people from regional areas, while equally capable, are more likely as a result of increased deferral rates, to take a longer time to qualify,” he said.

LOCAL Rose planting commemorates mothers A rose planting and morning tea at Portland District Health on August 21 will celebrate children and connections between health professionals and mothers in the community. The Little Ray of Sunshine rose will be planted as part of the Australian Breastfeeding Association’s 50th anniversary celebrations, and mums and their support people are invited to attend the ceremony. The bright yellow hybrid tea rose was bred specifically for the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) to help promote its mum-to-mum support services, and celebrate the little bundles of joy in our lives. Like many children, it is capable of surviving all sorts of conditions, and has a pleasant scent. The launch of the rose is also a fundraiser for the volunteerbased organisation, which was
formerly known as the Nursing Mothers Association of Australia. Portland ABA group leader Angela McFeeters said the rose planting was a way to thank some of the health professionals that had walked alongside mothers and families in the community during a part of their parenting journey. Portland District Health bought the rose and has worked with the group to have it planted permanently at the health service, a testament to the support the hospital’s staff have provided to the association over many years. Ms McFeeters said the association provided information about breastfeeding education classes and ante-natal sessions at the hospital, and conducts the town’s most comprehensive breastfeeding education classes at Active Health
LOCAL Portland, led by its trained community educator Lynda Cooper. The ABA’s qualified local breastfeeding counsellors Angela McFeeters, Pixie Endacott and Bernie Gibbons also provide free Breastfeeding Counselling to all mums who seek it. The group also has one trainee.“We provide confidential mum-to-mum information and support for breastfeeding mums and their families and support people. We love to listen to people’s concerns and help reassure them they are on the right track, or plan a strategy to work through the worry with the person,” Angela said. PDH director of nursing Ros Alexander invited all mothers to the planting ceremony. Midwifery team leader Colleen Hanmer, midwives and the recently expanded obstetrics team of Drs David Morris, Ghazala Irshad and Fariha Irshad have been involved in planning the event, and the midwives bought the rose that will be planted on the day. Ms Hanmer said they loved being able to provide support to mothers and their families during pregnancy and birth, and recognised the importance of connecting mothers into an often new community of peers when the mothers leave hospital. “The Australian Breastfeeding Association is a great way for mums to see that breastfeeding is practised widely in Portland, even

if it’s not always very obvious, and it’s a good way to help mums get that support from other mothers that complements healthcare services,” Ms Hanmer said.“We’re also really looking forward to seeing some little – and not so little - people that we have cared for at our hospital in the past. So please, come along and join us for the catch-up.” People can also buy roses to support the association and enjoy their blooms. For more information about the association phone Angela on 0416 765 492 or email abaportland@gmail.com Free, confidential 24-hour breastfeeding information and support is also available on the association’s Breastfeeding Helpline, 1800 mum-2mum (1800 686 268).

The Wattle Range Council is working with all councils in the Limestone Coast to develop a Regional Trails Master Plan. The Trails Master Plan will deliver a comprehensive and innovative Plan for the establishment of a network of regional trails promoting community recreation and tourism in the Limestone Coast. The outcome of the completed Master Plan will be the establishment of a connected network of regional trails to support recreation, tourism, infrastructure, and economic development opportunities for the Region. According to Wattle Range Council chief executive officer Peter Harriott councils are looking for ideas on what new trails could be developed across the Limestone Coast and how they could link existing trails to deliver better recreation and tourism experiences. “Some concepts that are currently ‘on the table’ include food and wine, forestry, history and geological trails,” he said. “All ideas are welcome so make sure you have your say.” Submit your ideas by completing the following online survey: https://www.survey monkey.com/s/ SELGARTMPLC The survey closes on August 31. Trigg swaps the ring for the gym with one eye on Rio Mount Gambier boxer Bobby Trigg was a star on the rise in national circles. He was called in to spar with the 2012 Olympic team to help prepare for London and he was a strong chance to be selected for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games but while he was a good fighter, he was still a boy fighting men and coach Colin Cassidy thought it was noticeable and would hold the talented young boxer back. So the duo, that have already scaled great heights at national and international level in junior ranks made the bold decision to step away from the ring competitively and focus on building Bobby’s strength. It was a decision that also played out because Bobby was completing the final year of his painting apprenticeship and the time the Australian Institute of Sort wanted the young fighter to spend in Canberra was just not practical if he was going to finish his trade. “He wouldn’t have been able to do both – finish his apprenticeship and train when the AIS needed him,” Cassidy said. “And I honestly thought he really needed to get a lot stronger to compete at open level.” Basically the year off competitive boxing has been with one thought in mind – making the 2016 Olympic team. “He really wants to make the Olympics and everything we are doing is all about that,” Cassidy said. “It’s now just about deciding the best way to get his name back in the frame.” Bobby has put on seven kilograms as a result of his focus on strength training and in between the training he’s been fending off numerous offers to turn professional. “He’s
Scholarship for local referee
Mount Gambier’s Ebony McDiarmid, a State junior basketballer and promising umpire has received an offer of a State Referee Development Program Scholarship for 2014/15. This offer comes as a result of Ebony’s impressive performances during a week long visit of Basketball SA officiating development manager Mike Gibson.McDiarmid joins talented Danika Jolley as Mount Gambier’s second referee to be offered this scholarship. This scholarship comprises significant financial support and conditions if Ebony accepts. These include regularly officiating in the local association, completing online theory courses, officiating at the SA Country Junior Championships and one of the Whyalla, Murray Bridge or Mount Gambier Junior Tournaments and attending the annual State Referees’ Development Camp.
had lots of offers, including from Danny Green’s people but he really wants to do everything he can to compete at the Oympics,” Cassidy said. And the recent results at the Glasgow games suggests Bobby could well be in the mix. Andrew Moloney won gold in the 52kg class at the games and Bobby has gone the distance with him in a previous bout. “When I saw Moloney win gold I thought we had made the right decision and Bobby can do it,” Cassidy said. So Bobby’s regime has been strength training three days a week and sparring for two. “He’s been going into the ring with Rocky Medoro and he’s more than holding his own,” Cassidy said. Medoro is a locally trained, well respected professional and a good test for the young wannabe Olympian. “If he comes back the way I hope then he should be a good chance,” Cassidy said. “He might do the State titles at the end of this year or even wait until next year before he starts fighting again.” Bobby’s apprenticeship finishes at the end of January and that will also free him up for AIS training and other opportunities right around the country.

Pennant season fast approaching
Lakers set to field two teams in CBL season Basketball Mount Gambier will be represented by both Lakers Men’s and Women’s teams in the 2014/15 Country Victoria Basketball League competitions. This pleasing outcome of having the Lakers Men and Women suiting up in CBL this coming season is a reward for Sonia Bawden, who has worked tirelessly to generate sufficient interest within the SECBL women to warrant a CBL nomination. The women did not field a team in the 2013/14 season after winning the conference and all conference titles the previous season. Meanwhile Ben Brumby and Simon Berkefeld are once again the movers and shakers for the Lakers Men. A total of 45 teams have nominated to compete in the three Conferences - Gippsland, North East and South West. There are nine participants in the men’s and six in the women’s competitions of the South West Conference.Ararat Redbacks, Colac Kookas, Horsham Hornets, Portland Lakers, Stawell Wildcats, Terang Tornadoes, Timboon Taipans and Warrnambool Seahawks join the Lakers in the men’s division while all but Colac, Terang and Timboon will also field Women’s teams. All three conferences will feature a full round of home and away series leading into two weeks of conference finals. There will not be an All Conference finals weekend. The season will begin on the weekend of October 11 and 12, have a Christmas break between December 22 and January 2 and then conclude with the finals series proposed for the weekend of January 31 and February 1. Selection Trial dates have been set for the Lakers teams. The Lakers Women will trial at the Barrie Holmes Sports Stadium at Tenison Woods College on Sunday, August 24, commencing at 7pm while the men’s trial will be Sunday, August 31, at 7pm, at Tenison Woods College. Three Mount Gambier referees have registered to officiate in this League for the coming season. They are experienced and wellcredentialed Kevin Nobes, current SEABL official Ali Jones and talented junior Danika Jolley, who aspires to referee at the nationalcChampionships in the near future.
Thirty-two bowlers competed in last week’s Mac Land Rover 2-4-2 competition at the Milicent Bowling Club. Sixteen team took to the Hahn and Somerset Greens for a fantastic afternoon of close games and interesting shots. The overall winners were Madeliene Schapel and Marino Gandolfi with 34+10 with the runners-up prize going to the pair of Ron Trewin and Carl Schapel. Other winning combinations were Bill Cattanach and Ian Ross (32+2), Jim Campbell and Jan Buhlmann (32+2), Brentley Thomas and Esther Scudds (31+7), Colin Pye and Glenn Schapel (31+2), Alan Strother and Neil Whelan (30+2) and Frank Weber and Terry Barnes (29+3). With a lot of the host club’s bowlers still in the Riverland, it was good to see so many players and these numbers will only grow as the pennant season starts. The first pennant matches take place on Friday, October 10, Saturday, October 11, and Monday, October 13. The Millicent Bowling Club will hold its 2014-15 Season Opening Day on Sunday, September 7, and will also host the LSEBA’s 2014-15 Pennant Season Opening Day on Sunday, September 14. All Lower South East bowlers are cordially invited to attend this day which starts at 11am. All participants are asked to wear their respective club uniforms and bring a plate of afternoon tea along.

Keeping it in the family The Edwards family has given the term sister act a whole new meaning when on August 2, all four sisters hit the court for Glencoe Netball Club’s A grade side. It was the debut of 13 year old Sarah and she showed up her older siblings by also securing a best player nod. Sarah won the association nest and fairest in 2012 and was runner-up at 15 & under level last season. Sarah played on the attacking wing, teaming with older sister and team captain Ashlea, who ran the centre. The duo was then linking with sister Laura in goal attack. Laura has earned a regular position in the 2014 A grade line-up and still plays at 17 & under level as well. And it was oldest sister Donna Jaeschke who was in charge of the trio in her role as coach of the A grade team. Jaeschke is the side’s goal defender, where she teams with her brother Jamie’s fiance Rebecca Wilson. All four sisters have represented Mid South East at association level and their father Les is a past president of the football club, where brother Tom is an A grade player, and mum Cassie as a long time A grade player and is the current A grade team manager and netball club president. Glencoe won the clash by 27 goals. The girls, and mother Cassie, are often teamed up for the Glencoe Tennis Club as well.

SWDFL - A Grade
Roos coach hits the 250 game mark It was only a few rounds ago that we were lauding the career of Lisa Cram, Amy Cram’s twin sister when she played her 250th game for West Gambier. At the weekend it was Amy’s turn to reach the identical milestone showing just how closely their careers have been entwined. They will go down in Western Border netball history as one of the most famous and consistent book ends – Amy, the talented and smart defender, and Lisa the hard working and accurate goaler. Since her junior years, Amy has been an outstanding defender, building her game around the perfect blend of tight checking one on one defence with her ability to read the play and leave her player to go hunting interceptions. Amy is a smart netballer who is also innovative, working on new ways to make life tough for her opponents, and in her recent incarnation as a coach, opposition teams. Her pressure over the shot has become one of the features of her game, where once again she keeps her opponent guessing, oscillating between a strong hold over the shot to a well time jump at the attempt. She is the complete defender, as at home working the ground as she is pulling balls from the air and she is rarely beaten on the rebound, ensuring any missed shots are punished. Amy has been at the helm of West Gambier, since returning to the club from a stint at Port MacDonnell, for the past three seasons and it’s no coincidence the Roos’ fortunes have been on the rise ever since. They contested the 2013 grand final and had Millicent on the ropes early before losing by 10 and they loom again as the side that best matches up on the reigning champions. They have suffered losses of eight, 10 & 16 goals and have one more look at the Saints this weekend and the astute coach and intensely competitive defender will have been working on certain aspects of the Roos game plan since that 16 goal loss and will be far more competitive this weekend. Amy has worked hard to make the Roos a strong defensive unit in the defensive third, with Racheal Langford, Carly Trevilyan and young circle defenders Maddy Teakle and Mollie Muhovics all working well as one unit on court to smother opposition teams and force them into error. Amy is also a critical offensive weapon with her drives through the mid court to turn defence into offence and she is the strong voice on court as she directs her younger team mates.

Western Border Netball celebrates 30th birthday in style More than 70 former and current players, officials, administrators, sponsors and volunteers celebrated Western Border Netball Association’s 30th birthday at the Commodore on the Park on Saturday night. The happy hour function was the centrepiece of the day long celebrations that saw each of the three venues celebrate the milestones with a range of activities including official cake cutting ceremonies, awarding of best on court medals, celebratory afternoon teas and even the national anthem. All players wore Western Border sky blue ribbons to mark the occasion, which saw all participating clubs involve as many life members and long serving players and volunteers in the day’s activities. The evening function was an informal affair with plenty of memorabilia on display, courtesy of former president Di Facey, and some brief formalities that saw Wendy Zippel, who was teamed with Heywood’s Stan Bannam, who was the mastermind and architect of the Western Border Netball Association, to help form the netball competition to align with the Western Border football, sharing her memories of the early years, along with the association’s longest serving president Di Facey and the current Director of Netball Bronwyn McCallum.

Motor LOCAL Properties found with two or more Glenelg Shire Council bins above their allocation may be investigated by police as Council cracks down on retrieving stolen and lost waste bins in the Shire. Those residents found with just one additional bin will be contacted by Council and asked to decide if they want the bin removed or to pay the additional garbage service charge. Mayor Cr John Northcott said lost and stolen bins cost Council up to $15,000 a year. “For the last 10 years, between 100 and 150 bins have been reported as missing each year,” he said. “The kerbside collection contractor has been requested to document properties that have more than one of each bin placed out to be serviced, and check this information against the records of bins allocated to the property. “It is the hope of Council officers that, over time, additional bins will be identified, allowing officers to take the appropriate action to retrieve these bins.” Glenelg Shire Council is the legal owner of waste and recycle bins issued to properties, as a part of the kerbside collection service. These bins remain the property of council at all times, with the owner of the residential property classed as the custodian of the Council bins. Under the current process for the replacement of missing or stolen bins, Council pays for the cost of these bin replacements, if the resident provides a police report or statuary declaration that the bin was stolen. Each replacement bin costs Council about $65 - $70 dollars.
