COVER Indulge

yourself with Shiseido

May is Shiseido Month at UFS Chemist. You can enjoy 10% off the entire Shiseido range for the whole month of May. If

you’re a Member with UFS, you will receive 30% off. That’s a huge saving. As a part of Shiseido Month, UFS Chemist is offering you a

complimentary Shiseido facial massage and makeup in their new beauty room. The makeup will be done out in the shop, as

it’s best to do it closest to the natural light as possible. This is to ensure the correct colours are used. This gives you the opportunity to try

the products before you commit to buying them. Bookings are essential, so please call Bec on (08)8723 0277 to make an appointment. Shiseido is a Japanese brand and has been around for more than 140 years. The name “Shiseido” means ‘to praise the virtues of the earth, which nurtures new life and brings forth significant values.’ Shiseido lives by their three core values - rich, human science and omotenashi. Omotenashi is a Japanese word, which means creating a non dominant relationship between a person who’s offering the service and a person who is receiving it. It’s about anticipating the needs of a customer in advance and offers a pleasant service. At Shiseido they welcome you with their hands, mind and hearts open. Shiseido believes that

caring, sensitivity and empathy define the beauty in communicating and building relationships. Rich is about the fullness of a personal experience, not about what money can buy. At Shiseido they believe that customers can feel the true richness through their uncompromising excellence and attention to details both visible and invisible in all their products and services. Human science – at Shiseido, research extends far beyond the chemistry of cosmetics and the biology of human skin. It incorporates holistic human perception, as well as their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual responses to everything around us. Shiseido strives to help individuals achieve and maintain their skin at every stage of life. There

is something to suit every age and skin type from one of their nine core ranges. Bec can help you select a daily skin care routine to specifically suit your needs and lifestyle. If you have been using your current skincare for some time, why not give your skin a change and try Shiseido? You won’t be disappointed. As well as skincare, Shiseido also have a wide variety of make-up products. With ten different foundations to choose from which range from different textures and coverage, you are bound to find something to suit your skin. Book an appointment with Bec today to give your skin the change it needs. With her wide range of product knowledge she can take the time to find a skin care regime to suit you, or match you up with a new foundation. It is such a beautiful range that you will notice the difference. Now is the time to change to Shiseido.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Out of touch by Robbie Tansel I’ve spent the last five years writing this article firmly of the opinion that many successful/famous people are out of touch with reality.

They need to get back in touch with the real world where the rest of us live. I’ve realised only within the last couple of days that I’m actually out

of touch with the famous people. I actually need to adjust my life to be more like them. I need to adopt a mindset like the famous

The place to find a boot for every occasion

people and then everything will make sense. I started off with the politicians. I had been having a difficult time coping with the thought of all the cuts they want us to make and all the new ways they are planning to tax me. No cuts to themselves though. I know their pay increases are determined by a completely independent committee. But I was thinking ridiculous things like, “wouldn’t it be amazing if they voted to reject that pay increase just one time?” I know in terms of the actual budget it would be a drop in the ocean but it would send a pretty powerful message to the general population that they’re in it with us. Why don’t you take that idea back to Canberra with a black balloon for each of the federal parliamentarians, Mr Pasin? Since I’ve adopted my new mindset of a successful

person, I now understand that they don’t decide about their pay increases. It would be very rude to ignore the recommendations of the independent committee. If they think that it’s time for a pay increase then it really should be passed. I also feel so much more in touch with Bob Carr, the former Labor senator who had parts of his memoirs leaked to the media recently. Apparently he complained about the quality of food and the lack of pyjamas on business class flights as well as the lack of subtitles on an Opera film in first class. Previously I might have suggested that considering our tax dollars were paying for it all and we are now going to be slugged more because of these terrible conditions he had to suffer through, maybe he is a little

out of touch with the real world. I might have also commented on the fact that he wasn’t even on the ballot form to get elected to the Senate at the time of the election and was handpicked by the Labor party because they have a certain amount of seats allocated and they can stick whoever they want into them. Not now though. With my new state of mind I don’t see this as arrogant, filthy, disgusting and insulting to the Australian people. I feel ashamed of anyone who has that ridiculous mindset. After that I start considering former Olympic swimmer Geoff Huegill, recently busted allegedly with cocaine on his person. Previously, I might have thought things like, “this guy is out of touch with reality. Just because you were an Olympic swimmer

doesn’t mean you can take cocaine”. I might have even thought, “come on, fella. If you’re an athlete and going to get caught with drugs, at least make them performance enhancing.” But with my new mindset, understanding that it’s actually me that’s out of touch with their real world, I understand that cocaine is performance enhancing. Imagine you’re an Olympic swimmer who has spent six hours a day training since age five. You’ve spent hour after hour staring at the black line on the bottom of the pool. You really haven’t had a chance to develop a personality. Pocketful of cocaine equals instant personality. Performance enhanced. Anyway, you might be noticing a little bit of passive aggression underneath my new understanding of being out of touch with them so I’ll have to keep working on it. I’m pretty sure if I flew first class a few times I’d find it a lot easier to understand their point of view so feel free to email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if you think you can help me.

Return the chicken to the casserole with the stock and 1/2 cup (125ml) water. Bring to a simmer, then cover with a lid and cook in the oven for 25 minutes or until most of the liquid has been absorbed. Remove from the oven and stir in the coconut cream, fish sauce and beans, then cover and stand for 10 minutes. Top risotto with coriander, fried Asian shallots and remaining kaffir lime leaves and serve with lime halves, if using.

LOCAL Making His official journey ended just one week before last week’s grand final, which was won by Michael Dameski, but Sam Malseed exceeded almost everyone’s expectations by making it to the top six of the 2014 series of So You Think You Can Dance Australia. Not only did Sam receive strong support from this region but he captured the hearts of the nation with facebook telling the story of a dancer whose skill and personality made people sit up and take notice. Making the top 100 was considered a huge achievement for the Mount Gambier based dancer but there was more to come as he stormed into the top 20 and then rode the wave of success right through to the penultimate

us proud week of the competition. It was a weird synergy that saw 2013 National Showcase Dancer of the Year Michael take out the SYTYCD Australia title – Sam won the National Showcase Dancer of the Year this year, in January. Sam’s long time teacher Maria Slape, from MJ Dance Studio, in Mount Gambier, could not be prouder of her charge – heading to Sydney a couple of times herself to support the 18 year old dancer. “He was the only dancer who came from a local dance studio without having done any professional work or study at a professional dance school,” Maria said. “I know people have been really impressed by Sam but I’m not sure they realise just what he has achieved.” While the country boy angle

was a thread throughout the series, it really was an amazing feat by the Mount Gambier teenager – almost all his fellow top 20 contestants were from Sydney with 10 having attended Brent Street – the studio Sam has been accepted into and may well end up at after the dust settles on his amazing reality TV journey. Maria said Sam’s success was a feather in the cap of the Mount Gambier studio. “I am happy with the culture we’ve created her – I don’t believe it’s just me, it’s the parents who are prepared to support me in whatever I do, they listen and understand what it takes and the kids do too,” Maria said. “I think it helps

that we haven’t secluded ourselves – there’s a big world out there so we so see what’s out there and I think that helps, we don’t get caught up in our own little world.” The So You Thin experience has given Sam a good taste of life as a professional dancer and the contacts he has made and the reputation he has built will be invaluable as he moves forward. “He was learning three or four routines in a week and having to perform them,” Maria said. “He’s never done that before – he’s worked on things for weeks and months and then performed them.” But she was proud her star pupil stood up to that pressure and the pressure of the public glare and the social media criticism that inevitably leaks into these experiences. Maria is also under no illusions that the support of this region kept Sam in the competition for as long as he was. “It is testament to this region that we do support our own,” she said. “People stopped me in the street all the time to talk about Sam – people were watching the show that have no connection or real interest in dance because they wanted to support Sam.” And there’s no doubt the choreographers Sam has worked with have

developed him significantly as a performer. “Sam has just loved working with all the different choreographers, especially Travis Wall. “He is

considered dance royalty,” Maria said. “And he loved working with the other dancers – he has made friends for life and it will be good for him to have those

friends if he does settle in Sydney.” Sam finished up his committments with the show when he was part of last week’s grand final episode.

Advertorial I KEVIN PAISLEY FASHION EYEWEAR

Eye colour Eye colour often is the genetic trait that fascinates parents the most as a child develops. Will the child’s eyes be black, brown, blue, gray, green, hazel or some combination of colours? How a child looks depends on the genetic material each parent contributes to the child. But the parents’ genes can mix and match in many different ways. The influences from each parent aren’t known until — surprise — after the child is born! The collared part of the eye is called the iris, which has pigmentation that determines our eye colour. Human eye colour originates with three genes, two of which are well understood. These genes account for the most common colours — green, brown, and blue. Other colours, such as gray, hazel and multiple combinations are not fully understood or explainable at this time. Most babies are born with blue eyes that can darken in their first three years. Darkening occurs if melanin, a brown pigment usually not present at birth, develops with age.

Children can have completely different eye colours than either of their parents. But if both parents have brown eyes, it’s most likely that their children also will have brown eyes. Some children are born with irises that don’t match in colour. Usually this is caused by faulty developmental pigment transport, local trauma either in the womb or shortly after birth or a benign genetic disorder. CHANGES IN EYE COLOUR The iris is a muscle that expands and contracts to control pupil size. The pupil enlarges in dimmer lighting and grows smaller in brighter lighting. The pupil also shrinks when you focus on near objects, such as a book you are reading. When the pupil size changes, the pigments in the iris compress or spread apart,

changing the colour of the eye a little. Eye colour also can change with age. This happens in 10 to 15 percent of the Caucasian population. In the adult eye, dramatic changes in colour, or if one eye changes from brown to green or blue to brown (called heterochromia), it’s important to see your optometrist or eye doctor. Eye colour changes can be a warning sign of certain diseases, such as Fuch’s heterochromic iridocyclitis, Horner’s syndrome or pigmentary glaucoma. Ultimately, if you don’t like the eye colour you inherited, you can always change it with coloured contact lenses. But remember, even coloured contact lenses are a prescription medical device and must be prescribed and monitored by an optometrist

local story Keen runners are already ramping up their training for the second annual Winter Solstice Fun Run on June 22, with the Portland event ready to ‘light up the shortest day of the year’. Last year’s inaugural event saw 170 walkers and runners braving hills, sand, stairs and winter weather, with the feature ‘lighthouse to lighthouse’ course attracting rave reviews from local and visiting runners alike. Speedy Warrnambool runners Kristian Mccartney and Ella Gill, have already registered to defend their 15km title, with the ‘king and queen of the lighthouse’ setting a blistering 50- minute and 55-minute time respectively in the 2013 event for the 14.5km course. Winter Solstice Race Director, Maya Eats, said the planning committee was raring to go, tweaking the course and boosting the sponsorship to make this year’s even better. The Portland Runners Club received great feedback from last year’s event, confirming a strong demand for winter events to keep people active in the colder months. Although many athletic events are scheduled for the spring or autumn when the weather is milder, as runners ourselves, we know many people putting in the miles throughout winter. “The winter solstice fun run is aimed at recreational runners and walkers, to celebrate their commitment and determination to keep active in the chilly weather.” The committee is busy organising a larger prize pool and wider advertising for the upcoming event, with the 15km, 9km and 5km courses offering a great smorgasboard of scenery. Following the resounding success of last year, there will be a children’s course and a team challenge for groups of four to contest the fastest average team pace. Entrants will be rewarded for their hard work with a carnival atmosphere at the finish line, with fresh fruit, hot food and live music at the Ploughed Field finish line. “We ‘warmly’ welcome runners and walkers of all fitness levels, and this year’s event will see $2 from each entry donated to the South West Relay for Life,” said Mrs Eats. There will be incentives for earlybird entries, with three lucky runners and walkers who register and pay before June 1 going into the draw to ‘run for free’. There will also be spot prizes on the day, family entries, and free medals for all children in the kids run. Register online at www.webscorer.com/ register?raceid=20540 or visit www.facebook/portlandwinte rsolsticefunrun The Portland Runners Club also holds twice weekly runs at 5.30pm on Wednesday and Friday evenings from the YMCA, and Sunday mornings at 9am with all community members welcome.

Advertorial I TAFE SA

Pathways to your future The general public from across the region will have the chance to meet representatives from TAFE SA and University of South Australia on Thursday, May 15, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm at Mount Gambier, Main Corner Complex at the ‘Pathways to Your Future’ event. This is an opportunity for prospective students and their parents to discuss and explore local study options, as well as mature age students who wish to upskill or are looking for a career change. This is the first joint career information event held in by TAFE SA and UniSA, who will be exhibiting various courses including Management, Accounting, Business Studies, Horticulture, Forestry, Hospitality, Cookery, Training and Assessment, Nursing, Aged Care, Disability, Social Work, Education, Children Services and Foundation Studies (UniSA), Foundation Skills (TAFE SA), Metal Fabrication and Hair and Beauty. TAFE SA Regional Manager Limestone Area, Tania

Plunkett, said it will give prospective students the chance to speak to highly experienced and qualified lecturers. “This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is thinking about changing careers, advancing further in their chosen field of employment or nearing the end of their high school education. ‘Pathways to Your Future’ gives the community the opportunity to come and see what is available at TAFE SA and UniSA at a local level. We want to encourage people to stay in the area to study which contributes to the prosperity of our local area,” said Tania.UniSA Associate Professor Judy Nagy is looking forward to bringing the event to Mt Gambier to showcase the University’s latest developments. ”We are

very excited to expand the number of programs we will be offering once our new building (in Mt Gambier) is completed in 2016 and the high speed internet that is part of the project will mean we can enrich our student learning experiences by connecting to anywhere in the world,” said Judy. TAFE SA and UniSA have strong connections and many TAFE SA qualifications at Diploma and Advanced Diploma level have articulation agreements that entitle TAFE SA graduates to gain credit in university degrees. This means students may complete their degree in less time and at a lower cost. local story The City of Mount Gambier has laid out the welcome mat for players and spectators heading to the Limestone Coast for next month’s National Premier League fixture by coming up with the ultimate list of things to see and do in the Blue Lake City. Football Federation SA has confirmed that Para Hills Knights will play Cumberland United on Saturday, May 17, at Gambier Centrals Soccer Club in a game designed to forge closer links with football partners in regional South Australia. Mount Gambier Mayor Steve Perryman said local authorities were also viewing the match as an opportunity to showcase the region’s many attractions, with the game coinciding with several other major events including the Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier Gold Cup Carnival. “We are encouraging participants to consider heading down early in order to spend Thursday and Friday at the carnival and to then stay on and make an entire weekend out of the visit,” Mayor Perryman said. “The city has a real energy about it at this time of year which we really want to share; Adelaide had Mad March, but Mount Gambier is shaping up to be Mad May, and we can’t wait.” The City of Mount Gambier has developed a welcome pack for members of both teams, outlining a suggested itinerary for a possible four-night stay, starting with the Gold Cup Cocktail Party on Wednesday, May 14. “Most people love the races, and the Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier Gold Cup Carnival really is the ultimate country race meeting which is guaranteed to create a fabulous first impression of our City,” Mayor Perryman said. Other suggested highlights include the Brick by Brick LEGO Exhibition at the Main Corner, and the Da Vinci Machines Exhibition at the Riddoch Art Gallery. “Mount Gambier is the only South Australian location to host this exhibition during its international tour, and it really is a mustsee with more than 75 intricate models, images and interactive machines, as well as high quality reproductions of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic artworks in their original renaissance frames,” Mayor Perryman said.

Returned to Portland late in 2012 to work at another pharmacy in town. Previously lived and worked in Portland as a secondary school teacher in the late 1990s. After changing careers in 2005 to become a pharmacist he worked in various pharmacies in Melbourne and jumped at the opportunity to return to Portland when a job vacancy arose. “The move to Portland Guardian has been great both professionally and for my family,” Mr Anderson said. “I am enjoying working with the friendly and highly skilled staff and the loyal customers have made me feel very welcome.” With a young family, Mr Anderson has both the knowledge and experience to help parents with their children’s health issues. A keen sportsman, he plays squash and basketball and, when time allows, likes to get on the golf course. During winter he is a

keen follower of local footy, especially the Portland Tigers where he is a proud past player. Mr Anderson has a good knowledge of sports injury treatment and prevention. Two of our staff members were recently achkowledged at Victoria’s Guardian Pharmacy Assistant of the Year 2013 Awards. Lee Caddick (winner) and Jenna Swan (runner-up) were chosen from all the staff from the 40-plus Guardian stores across the State. “We are all really proud of the achievements of both Lee and Jenna and they are great examples of the standards in customer service all our staff set,” Mr Anderson said. Other specialist professional services include: • FREE access to Health Information through Health Hub • FREE medication reviews – • FREE blood pressure

LOCAL Making They may have been little feet walking through the door on the first day of Mount Gambier’s new Early Learning & Community Centre, but they were

learning a whole lot of fun taking a big step forward in the advancement of education facilities for the region. The new $2 million architecturally designed centre, purpose-built on-

site at Tenison Woods College to cater for children aged 3-5 years, officially opened its doors this week to a host of excited children, parents,

staff and community members alike. Tenison Woods College Principal, Mr David Mezinec, said the Centre was a significant step forward in Mount Gambier’s aspirations to be considered a pre-eminent learning city. “The Centre has drawn inspiration from the work of Mount Gambier’s Lifelong Learning Committee to develop a ‘Charter for Children’ and a commitment to better catering for the needs of our region’s

children,” he said. “This is a wonderful facility for the people of Mount Gambier and the South East which will complete our school’s whole family approach from early childhood to Year 12 and beyond.” The Centre, is registered for up to 83 children at any one session, will have a strong focus on early learning while also offering child care, pre-school and early childhood support services, before and after school sessions, playgroup and parenting

programs. Mr Mezinec said the Centre’s development and operations recognised the changing and varied needs of today’s families, and provided a greater level of flexibility. “The Centre will operate for 50 weeks of the year from, 7.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, catering for the needs of working parents with specific early learning programs from 8.30am to 3.30pm.” Local building contractor

Dycer Construction commenced work on the site eight months ago with approximately 200 workers involved, either directly or indirectly, in the project including sub-contractors, construction related industries and local suppliers. Designed by South Australian firm, Edge Architects, Mr Mezinec said the Centre was designed to be an extension of the home and had been planned with sustainability, flexibility and natural play as the focus. cont. opp page.

The purpose built facility opened its doors for the first time this week after over 7 years in the planning. LOCAL Making “The Early Learning Centre is set in a natural environment, where the indoors flows into the outdoors, and provides the ideal location for children to explore, create and imagine under the guidance of their educators and coeducators,” Mr Mezinec said. “The rooms have been designed to ensure children feel safe, secure and supported all while promoting a sense of self-confidence and an enthusiasm for learning.

Above (left) - The playbased learning at the new Tenison Woods College Early Learning and Community Centre is certainly making a splash, receiving the thumbs up from Jaques Aslin and Scott McBain. Whilst this week was the opportunity for the children to find their feet, the wider Mount Gambier community will be given the opportunity to tour the site with an Community Open Day being organised for Sunday, June 1. Above (right) - Mount Gambier’s new Early Learning & Community Centre is officially up and running. Enjoying their first day at the new Centre were (from left) Brogan Wright, Gerry Vanikiotis, Eli Thorne, Blake Drew, Louis Vincent, Kade McCourt, Lacey Hunter and Taine White. The new centre has been built onsite at the Tension Woods College campus and will cater for children aged 3-5 years.

learning a whole lot of fun “It has been designed with flexible floor plans that allow for the creation of many learning spaces and the rooms open onto a paved, covered, outdoor area that is a link to the playground.” The Centre includes three large flexible learning spaces, a spacious community piazza, community room with parent library, kitchen and dining facilities and a large outdoor play area

designed to accentuate child development and learning. It is also equipped with contemporary facilities for students who have specific physical needs. Outside, the grounds include inner courtyards, meeting places and a playground as well as native bush gardens, fruit and vegetable patches and a worm farm to teach children about sustainability. Early Learning Centre Director, Domenica Dunn said the Centre was

influenced by contemporary approaches including Reggio Emilia and Montessori Education and was modelling its practice on play based learning. “Our aim is to provide programs that build on the children’s own strengths and interests and one that supports and acknowledges the many different cultural backgrounds and experiences of families,” she said. Close proximity to other sections of the

school campus will also see the children able to share the wider school facilities providing students access to specialist music, Italian, dance, drama, art

and physical education opportunities. Whilst this week was the opportunity for the children to find their feet, the wider Mount Gambier community

VOLUNTEERS The lifeblood of the community FEATURE Meals

on Wheels looking for more hands on deck

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community and they are certainly the lifeblood of Meals on Wheels. The Mount Gambier outlet has a significant percentage of its volunteer base having clocked up between 20 and 40 years service and while that loyalty is appreciated, it also reflects an aging volunteer group and the local Meals on Wheels is hopefully it can start attracting new generations of kitchen hands, office administrators and delivery volunteers to assist them feed the elderly in this region. “We know finding volunteers is a problem affecting all community groups,” Meals on Wheels Mount Gambier chair Les Cunningham said. “We know just from our experience that many of our volunteers also volunteer in two or three other organisations.” Volunteer coordinator Laura Cunningham agrees and that’s why the local group is stepping up its efforts to attract volunteers and hopefully tap into younger generations. The school program is one way Meals on Wheels is not only garnering new volunteers but also hopefully generating a lifelong association between the participating students and the organisation. Grant High School was the foundation school and has been working in the Mount Gambier kitchen for four decades. St Martins College also has a close association with the Mount Gambier branch which has developed over the past four years. “The good thing is these students volunteer to be part of the program, they are not made to do it,” Laura said. In a perfect world, these students will

continue to give of their time once the school term ends and even encourage their friends to lend a helping hand. The local branch is also hoping that perhaps young mothers might choose Meals on Wheels as somewhere to give a few hours, just like they would to hear reading at school or help supervise an excursion. “It would be great to get some younger people involved and you seem to find if you can get a few involved it seems to get the interest of others,” Laura said. “Local businesses have also been great in allowing their staff to volunteer and some of the banks and real estate agents have worked at the Mount Gambier branch and that’s been another way to try and get our message out to a different group again.” There are three areas volunteers can assist in – the kitchen, office and with deliveries. The kitchen requires a 4-5 hour shift, deliveries require around two hours and there is around 5-6 hours of office work on offer. “It is basically up to the volunteer how regularly they are here – we have some who volunteer weekly and many are fortnightly or monthly, we can certainly work around when people can make themselves available,” Laura said. Succession

planning is another item on the Meals on Wheels agenda. “We need people to take on leadership roles and that’s another area we are looking to find people so they can start learning how things run and take over from the people that have been doing those roles for a very long time,” Les said. “We need to have a flexible team.” Meals on Wheels Mount Gambier serves 90 three course meals a day which

consists of a soup, main course and dessert. “One of our thoughts is that it would definitely suit young people who might be interested in a career in cooking,” Laura said. “You certainly learn about running a kitchen and menu planning and food preparation.” Anyone interested in volunteering their time at the Mount Gambier branch should contact Laura on (08) 8725 3839.

Puppy Sponsors – a life-changing role

It’s not only hardworking volunteers who make a difference to the Royal Society for the Blind’s (RSB) Guide Dog Service – RSB Puppy Sponsors also play a vital role in changing the lives of South Australians who are blind or vision impaired. RSB Puppy Sponsors help RSB Guide Dog pups grow up to become life-changing mobility tools, but it doesn’t come cheaply – it costs more than $25,000 to breed, raise and train each RSB Guide Dog. The good news is you can make a positive difference to the lives of hundreds of South Australians by becoming a RSB Puppy Sponsor for less than one dollar a day.

By becoming a RSB Puppy Sponsor you’ll be a part of an amazing journey and for as

little as 83 cents a day you can provide an RSB Guide Dog pup with essentials like vet care, puppy food, collars and leads. By supporting the RSB Guide Dog Service and becoming an RSB Puppy Sponsor, you’ll be helping people like RSB client and Ambassador, Rachael Leahcar whose life has changed since she started working with her RSB Guide Dog, Ella. “I have fallen in love with this

life-changing animal,” said Rachael. “My RSB Guide Dog Ella has brought inner happiness I never knew. Every time I look at her, I think of the two-and-a-half years of hard work that went into bringing her up and the difference she has already made in my life.” Become a RSB Puppy Sponsor today by calling 1800 644 577 or emailing puppy sponsorship@rsb.org.au
