COLLECTED STUPIDITY This is getting old real fast by Robbie Tansel Well the government are trying to ruin our lives again. I’m just wondering if a time is going to come where they’re actually going to

improve things. What’s got my back up this week is the suggestion that the pension may not be available until people reach the age of 70.

This stems from the fact it is projected that people will be living longer on average, there will be more people needing the pension and

the government just won’t be able to afford this. I’m firmly of the opinion that this is an atrocious idea. I certainly don’t want to be working until age 70. I don’t want to be encountering 70 year olds continuing to perform their jobs at age 70 either. Consider the possibility. There are plenty of jobs which are going to be nearly impossible at this age. Anything involving manual labour is obviously going to be pretty challenging. Anything that involves functioning mental capacities will also be difficult for doddery oldies. So essentially the only job that meet this criteria (nothing physical and no need for functioning brains) is politician. There is a pretty limited demand for politicians. I think the government would be much better off looking for savings elsewhere. Let’s think intelligently about this issue and how to solve it. The problem is that people are going to be living too long.

Takeaways & Phone Orders Available

“The Western Tavern is committed to ensuring responsible service and promotion of alcohol & gambling in our venue”

So surely the government can solve this problem by cutting back on the money that is being spent on health initiatives. Stop funding anti-smoking campaigns and start encouraging people to start sucking on the cancer sticks. Not only do you save the money from anti-smoking advertising, but you are going to bring back that average lifespan. Make gyms illegal (which should be done anyway by the way) and provide some tax breaks to the fast food industry. Get the population obese and pump up the number of people dying of obesity related illnesses. How about the tax dollars it will bring into the budget. The government could also take the very obvious step of cutting back on money provided to medical research. Surely they shouldn’t be funding research that is going to keep people alive longer and only exacerbate the problem. I’ve never used that word. I hope I used it

correctly. Another way I think they could cut back would be not encouraging royal visits. Surely this costs the country bucketloads of money in police, security and a variety of other costs. Who actually cares about the royals? They have no actual purpose. They’re well known and in a position because of who their parents happen to be, and who their parents happen to be and who their parents happen to be…and so on. They have no actual skills or talents that should make them famous. As far as I’m concerned they’re just the English Kardashians. There is no reason we should care, but for some reason they lob in our country and we’re receiving hourly updates like it actually matters. If this contributes to me working for longer, don’t give them a visa. How about we also cut back on politician junkets? You know, where the pollies decide to go to Italy to research something or other. Realistically it’s a holiday and they go to some one day festival or conference to justify spending three weeks working on their tan and drinking wine at the tax payers’ expense. These research trips are like Japanese whaling. The Japanese are whaling for scientific purposes (mmmmm, that whale still tastes yummy.) The

politicians have holidays in the French Riviera for the benefit of the country (mmmm, this wine is delicious, what do you think of my tan?) Aren’t all the grandies going to be busy enough raising all their grandchildren? Who’s going to provide all that free babysitting if the grandies are having to go to work each day? All that’s going to end up happening here is that instead of having a huge pension budget with too many people on the books, there will be a huge unemployment budget with too many pensioners on the books. Employers will unfairly continue to be reluctant to employ older Australians. Anyway, looks like I’ve got another 40 years of drudgery ahead. Plenty of time to email me at robbietansel@gmail.com I’ll think about accepting a change to the pension age if the pollies adjust their superannuation plans so they receive their money at the same time and in the same way as the rest of us.

getting away from it all

The former family home turned eco-lodge is a transportable and is the first one the now hugely in demand sustainable housing company built. Kate admits her passion for the environment is relatively newfound. “When you’re younger you don’t really get it,” she said. “And then when you’re exposed to something like rising salinity levels and see trees suffering and a reduced amount of birdlife and you start to see how important taking care of the environment really is.” And that’s where the wetlands on this vast rural property come in as well. “The wetlands are about us giving back to the land,” Kate said. “You can’t replace every tree on the place but you can try and run a farming enterprise in a respectful way and we have now seen such rejuvenation and the return of the birdlife.” There is a natural watercourse running through the property in what is a stunning

example of environmental respect working alongside agricultural pursuits. There are four weirs in the wetlands to further assist controlling the flows and making the best use of that most precious of all resources – water. And with the environmentally sustainable materials used to build the eco-lodge, it’s not just the exterior that blends with its surrounds. “The design of the house is all about getting the right airflow so you don’t have to use airconditioning,”

Kate said. “There’s bamboo flooring, double glazed windows and it’s all about using sustainable material in a way that provides proper insulation.” You can add spotted gum cladding and redgum decking to the list and, of course, it is solar powered.Kate admits while they were committed to creating an environmentally sustainable home, Modscape did the leg work for them, having already sourced so many of the suppliers needed to bring the eco-lodge together. It was five years ago that

they built the home and since then Modscape has built hundreds just like the Willalooka home, which in the end kickstarted things in a big way for the Melbourne company. And having been originally designed as a family home, the eco-lodge is a generous sized property with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and two living areas, as well as a stylishly appointed kitchen. ADVERTORIAL Where

is Jase???? Jason ‘Jase’ Scheidl had been heard weekday morning’s across the Limestone Coast on Southern Cross Austereo’s 96.1 Star FM Since 2002. In early March Jase announced that he was finishing on Star FM after more than 12 years in the seat. Since his departure, the question that people have been asking is “Where’s Jase gone?” Jase can now be found weekday mornings on Southern Cross Austereo’s sister-station, 963 5SE AM. The switch-over to 5SE has provided a new challenge for Jase and a new positive direction for 963 5SE. “My goal in my career has never primarily been to develop as an announcer, then just move on,” Jase said. “I was born in Mt Gambier, have family and good friends here and I think this move to 963 5SE enables me to continue to develop and remain local.” The new 5SE Breakfast Show still provides the latest local news and sport from around the region, along

come ‘n’ try with regular national news updates. It also continues to entertain and inform with interviews and reports from community groups and organisations, plus - as always - the greatest hits from the last four decades. “It’s refreshing to enjoy the ‘Greatest Hits’ on 5SE,” Jase said. “I was brought up on artists like Springsteen, INXS and bands like the Rolling Stones, so the range of music on 5SE isn’t foreign to me - it’s a great change.” And Jase is hoping listeners will also make the change and join him in this new chapter of his radio career. “The response from the audience has been terrific. Some of the listeners that have been tuned in since my early years on Star FM have continued to follow me now on 5SE and it’s really special to think they enjoy me being part of their mornings,” he said. Tune in to ‘Jase In The Morning’, weekdays from 6am on 963 5SE AM.

LOCAL Time The Rotary Vehicle Check has become a critical road safety program in this region and it’s on again this

to give your car the once over week on Thursday. Last year, more than 400 vehicles took advantage of the free safety check, with Mount Gambier

seeing more than half of those, with those 118 having their headlights adjusted and on the night nearly 50 globes were

replaced. Technicians from Trident Tyres also checked tyres and gave advice to 90 of the vehicles. Globes and wiper blades will be changed if requested at cost with products from Cocky’s Auto Mart. The evening is supported as a community Road Safety Event by the various local Road Safety Groups in the region, WIN TV, RAA, SAPOL, local press and radio, local councils and businesses. Naracoorte saw 122 vehicles,

Millicent, 60, and Bordertown, 36. For a gold coin donation you can enter a raffle for prizes donated by the businesses supporting the evening.

legend to hit Harrow celebrations

He has been the henpecked husband of Australia’s favourite trophy wife, a star attraction in the country’s comedy festivals and philanthropist and now Peter Rowsthorn is appearing live on stage in Harrow. Best known for his role as ‘Bretty’ in the Aussie comedy Kath and Kim and his 80s stint on The Comedy Company, Rowsthorn will host the Harrow Bush Nursing Centre’s second Black Tie Ball on June 7. The gala fundraising event for Harrow’s primary health care service was first held in 2012 and this year has special significance, marking 100 years of bush

nursing in Harrow. Harrow Bush Nursing Centre Manager, Bernadette Close said more than 150 people attended the inaugural ball, raising vital funds for the service and we anticipate more than 200 people for this year’s event. “The money raised goes towards the ongoing programs and services provided to Harrow and district,” Mrs Close said. “Without these fundraising events and the generous support of the community, the Bush Nursing Centre could not provide the wide range of programs and services currently available to our clients. “In addition to primary and emergency

health services, other programs include visiting allied workers, neighbourhood house activities and monthly Planned Activity Group lunches and excursions which provide muchneeded social interaction for our local residents, particularly our seniors.” This year’s ball includes a three-course dinner and live music with popular Adelaide band, The Brian’s. The bush nursing centre will also be providing bus services to and from the ball from Hamilton, Edenhope and Wombelano. “We want people to be able to dress in their finest after-fives,

have a great evening and not have the worry of how they will get home before their coach turns into a pumpkin!” Mrs Close said. She also gratefully acknowledged the support of Mary Rowsthorn, a former Harrow resident and sister-in-law of the ball’s star attraction, who has sponsored the comedian’s appearance in Harrow. “As well as a work engagement, Peter is looking forward to coming to Harrow for a bit of a family catch-up,” Mrs Close said. For further information, including ticket bookings, phone the Harrow Bush Nursing Centre on (03)5588 2000 or email operationsadmin@hbnc. org.au.

LOCAL Racing Australia’s unique racing style will be celebrated in Warrnambool this week when the Racing Style: 50 years of Fashions on the Field exhibition travels to the region. Delivered by the Australian Racing Museum, the exhibition, which features original winning outfits and millinery from five decades of racing’s iconic fashion competition, will be on display at Warrnambool’s Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village for an eight week period. The exhibition opened to the public on ANZAC Day– on the eve of Warrnambool’s iconic TAB May Racing carnival – and will run until Friday, June 20. Australian Racing Museum chair Barbara Saunders said it was the first time the

exhibition has travelled outside of Melbourne. “This is the first time the display has been shown outside of the National Sports Museum and we are thrilled to bring it to Warrnambool on the eve

of the region’s iconic May racing carnival,” Saunders said. “The exhibition is a fantastic celebration of Australian fashion – from vintage classics to daring designs, neutral palettes to bright colours, and haute couture to thriftily recycled fabrics.” Approximately 20 ensembles will be on display at the exhibition, with each capturing the uniqueness of Australian racing style. “Fashion has been an integral feature of Victoria’s racing festivities from the very first Melbourne Cup Day in 1861 and visitors to the exhibition can trace the evolution of Australian race wear and view key outfits that helped shape

both social and dress standards,” Saunders said. The Fashions on the Field competition was created by the Victoria Racing Club in 1962 in a bid to attract more women to the races and, since then, the concept has been embraced by racing clubs throughout Australia and internationally. Fashions on the Field celebrated 50 years last year and today it is one of the most iconic events in Australia’s cultural, fashion and sporting calendar. Head into the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in Warrnambool and view this unique collection.

to the stars and the celebrities who sit in the front row at the runway shows dominate the headlines. It is the unveiling of the new season

looks, it is a chance for Australian designers to showcase their talents to a captive local audience and it is a week long party

for the actors, sports stars, musicians and other fashionistas that converge on Sydney for the fashion and social event of the season. And right in the middle of the who’s who of the Australian A listers was Mount Gambier hair stylist Jess Brill (pictured left). The Giannis & The Body Retreat stylist earned a spot backstage as part of the Goldwell team that worked with many of the top designers to create the looks for the 2014 runway shows. Following in the footsteps of her former boss and mentor Katina Sims, Jess was selected to be part of the Goldwell styling team after her work was put forward by new salon owner Ben Gow. She worked on the strateas.carlucci show as the stylists were put into groups of two and three to create looks on around seven female and a handful of male models. It was a surreal experience for the talented young stylist. Not just because she was creating looks for the premier fashion show in Australia, but because it was working sight unseen on already selected styles, like a chef cooking a new recipe for the first time. “I was talking to a couple of girls that had done a couple of the previous Fashion Week shows and often you get a day to practice the looks and rehearse the best way to achieve them,” Jess said. But in 2014 for the strateas.carlucci show, the young Mount Gambier stylist was thrown in the deep end. “The styles were put up on a board and you had to follow the step by step instructions – and all without pictures, which is also unusual,” Jess said. “So it was full on but just so much fun and so amazing to be working with so many amazing stylists from around Australia and to get the experience of working with models for such an important event.” And Jess said you also did get a real sense of achievement after creating the perfect look, as envisioned by the designers whose clothes were set to be showcased, under the pressure of the deadline

of a live runway show. “It was also a great feeling to work in a team of people you’ve never met before and get the job done,” she said. “It was pretty full on with people running around everywhere but it was also calm, in that everyone was just getting everything finished off and looking as good as possible.” To see the looks she helped create step out onto the Sydney runway was a thrill for Jess and just another wonderful opportunity afforded her during her career at Giannis & The Body Retreat. “I have had some great experiences like this through Katina and now Ben and I am really grateful,” Jess said. “You don’t expect to work in Mount Gambier and get the chance to do things like Fashion Week.” Jess did her share of celebrity spotting during her day at the premier event, laying eyes on Ruby Rose, Jesinta Campbell, minus Buddy Franklin, and Timomatic. “Next year it would be good to go again,” Jess said. “Even if I didn’t get to be part of a styling team, just to be there and see the latest looks and trends in hairdressing, as well as fashion, would be amazing.” Jess has also done her share of styling in the past year, working alongside former local designer Megan Caldersmith and former local photographer Jess Pettingill, for a special

to the stars

bridal shoot in the middle of last year. “That was a great experience too, to work with local talent and to come up with the looks and ideas ourselves.” Those shoots were at Struan House and Nangwarry Homestead and gave Jess a chance to be the creative brains behind the hair and

make up. “It is great to do those different creative things because you can then bring some of those ideas and things you’ve tried back to your clients,” Jess said. Above (left top and bottom) - The runway show Jess worked on in

The rise and rise of Mount Gambier based powerlifter Yana Sim has continued this month as she claimed a national title. Competing in Melbourne at the Powerlifting Australia National Championships at the Health & Fitness Expo, Sim was able to match her previous best overall performance to clinch the number one mantle in Australia in the 84kg class. Sim was the only South Australian competitor that was invited to the national championships. “You first have to qualify but that doesn’t automatically get you in, you then have to be invited and I was lucky enough to get an invitation,” she said. Her total of 370kg matched her previous best total but did include a 7.5kg increase in her PB for bench press – that improvement coming in just four weeks. “There

her way to the top of the tree was a lot of top lifters and international lifters so it was a really good standard competition,” Sim said. “It’s the biggest competition I’ve done and it was against the best of the best in Australia.” Sim will compete on May 10 in Adelaide at a smaller satellite competition before embarking on a long training cycle ahead of the Asia Pacific Championships in December. “I probably wouldn’t have normally done the Adelaide competition but my coach is running it so I feel like I should support it,” Sim said. “The Asia Pacifics are my whole focus now.” That major event will be held in Melbourne and without looking too far ahead, the Commonwealth Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships in Vancouver in 2015 are another competition on which she has her sights

firmly set. Sim has a seven day a week, two and a half hour a day training regime in her home built training gym. She does four days of conditioning and three days of heavy lifting. “Aside from the gold medal, the best thing

about the nationals was meeting all those amazing lifters and coaches and support staff that have been doing this for a really, really long time,” Sim said. “They are the sort of people you can really learn from.”

annually in May, has lasted more than three decades. The popular competition will launch into its 33rd year on May 3 when around 50 boats head out to battle nature and see what they can bring back to scale. The 2014 event is looking to be back to high numbers with around 160 fishers, young and old, male and female, are expected to look to snare one of the plethora of prizes on offer. And not only does the competition still attract impressive competitor numbers, the sponsorship support has also never been better with 18 major sponsors and 72 sponsors all up. “There is definitely more interest this year than the past couple and it’s good to see the entry numbers up a fair bit from the 130 we had last year,” publicity officer Gary Clarke said. cont. page 34.

And while competition is fierce and the swapping of the “one that got away” stories is prevalent, the social side of the week long tournament is as big a drawcard as the on water action. There is a fellowship dinner on Wednesday, May 7, with the presentation dinner on Saturday, May 10, with many mothers no doubt set for a delicious fresh seafood dinner on Mother’s Day, if their angling family have a successful week on the boat. “Both those dinners are at the footy club and they’re always a great night,” Clarke said. The good news for those who haven’t made up their mind whether to throw a line is the tuna are biting – close to shore and further out and a pending State Lifestyle1.net - 034

33rd Port MacDonnell Tuna Fishing Competition tempt the tastebuds - tuna in the spotlight record tuna was snagged last Monday by an Adelaide man who was fishing off the Port MacDonnell coast. “They were catching those tuna in 20metres of water which is about three miles off shore,” Clarke said. And as the years have passed so has the variety the tournament presents and while the tuna is the showcase fish of the week, there are prizes across all categories with last year seeing a world record set by Craig Medhurst – his 22.92kg Tope shark earned him his 15 minutes of fame and then some. Species weighed in during the competition include Southern Blue Fin Tuna, Albacore, Snapper, Mulloway, Australian Salmon and Eagleray, plus a range of sharks, including Mako, Thresher, Tope and Gummy. Accommodation is already at a premium with most beds already snapped up for the week long fish fest. “There is still really good support from the local fishers but we do get people from across the border, Adelaide and right across Australia,” Clarke said. And for the first time ever, the competitors are vying for a dinghy trailer and outboard motor as the major prize.

Western Border Soccer Association CHALLENGE CUP ROUND ONE

Above - James Dukalskis has spent the past 12 months in the spotlight mainly for his football prowess (pictured above after his selection in the All Australian Under 15 team) but his athletics has always been a strong suit as well and last week he was one of only four South Australians talent identified and selected in the Under 17 Australian Development Squad for Athletics Australia. James has been invited to the Australian Institute of Sport with the squad as part of their development.

NETBALL Tough

Above - Young East Gambier shooter Mary Wilson has just been named in the South Australian Under 15 Schoolgirls State Netball team. Mary received the good news at today’s final selection trial in Adelaide. Check out the gallery of Mary in action around the Western Border netball courts in the past couple of seasons on our Lifestyle1 facebook page. Mary has been a key part of East Gambier’s proud tradition of scooping the pool of junior premierships in the past few seasons.

cookie set to celebrate 300 games Ask any player that has had to go toe to toe with North Gambier’s Kerry Bilney and they’ll tell you it was a tough day at the office. Known for her strong work ethic and her ability to run all day, Kerry is one of the toughest competitors in the competition. Tight checking as a defender, Kerry has always ensured her opponent earns every possession and she is a player who has the ability to create a turnover just when it’s needed. A wing defender that nullified many a quality wing attack and a hard running centre, Kerry has returned in 2014 after a season off to have her first child – a daughter Payton. She is part of North’s A reserve line-up at the moment, after being an integral part of the A grade team for most of her senior career. This weekend against competition pacesetters Millicent, Kerry will clock up her 300th outing in the yellow and black after starting with the club as a junior in 1996. She was part of the North Gambier A grade premiership three-peat from 2003-’05 and played in four consecutive A Reserve premierships from 1999 – 2002. The consummate team player, Kerry has still collected plenty of individual accolades, including runnerup A grade club best and

fairest 2008 and ’11, and taking out the best & fairest in 2010. Those senior accolades, which also included the 2002 A Reserve club best & fairest, added to her 1996 15 & under club best & fairest, as she also represented Western Border as well in that same year and then again as a senior player from 2005 – ’07. Club legend Sue Sidebottom, who played alongside Kerry and coached her as well couldn’t speak highly enough of the Tiger with the never say die attitude.” Kerry was always an incredibly committed, reliable and hardworking player who would do and try anything to help her team to be successful,” Sidebottom said. Kerry now joins her mentor in the 300 club. Both are also life members of the proud club – Kerry being inducted last year. Marelle Bruhn is another Tiger great who has played alongside Kerry and coached her was also full of praise for the hard working midcourter. “Since beginning her netball career as a junior many years ago Kerry Bilney has been a loyal and dedicated member of the North Gambier Netball Club,” Bruhn, the current Western Border Netball Association president said. “As a player Kerry can be described as tenacious, committed, team-orientated, well prepared, skilful and courageous – all attributes of a fine netballer and qualities which epitomise the fighting

tiger spirit at North Gambier. “Kerry was a pleasure to coach with her unwavering dedication to the team, her meticulous preparation, her ability to push through any obstacles which arose and to lift the entire team by leading by example. “As a team mate one could not ask for anyone more determined and dedicated to the team cause and as a result of her commitment Kerry has been fortunate enough to have been involved in numerous memorable premierships throughout her long career at North Gambier. “Kerry has been a loyal servant of the North Gambier Netball Club by taking on committee roles and has coached several different grades over the years, passing on her years of knowledge to many others. “ It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Kerry’s netball career develop from the early days up until today – 300 games later.” Kerry has been a coach of North’s15 & 13 & under tams on four occasions and served on the committee for a total of eight years over her 300 game career. Her 2012 coach Michelle Hosking was another keen to sing the praises of Kerry as the milestone approached. “Kerry is one of those girls you love to have in your side,” Hosking said. “She is a fierce competitor and never shies

away from a challenge. “Kerry is dedicated to her team mates and gives her everything at training. “On court, Kerry is an experienced centre court player, a great steadier, with brilliant passes. “She is a huge part of the North Netball Club and 300 games is a fantastic achievement.” The congratulations have also come from opposition clubs with Millicent icon Donna Denton describing Kerry as a tenacious midcourter. “I’d like to congratulate Kerry on her 300th game milestone,” Denton said. “ Kerry was a key part of North’s A grade premierships in 2003, 2004, 2005 playing mainly at wing defence and her ability to shut down her opponent, read the

play and be a reliable attacker are her biggest assets. “She is very well respected around the league for her tough but fair nature on court and always displays great sportsmanship. “I’m sure the North Gambier Netball club would be extremely proud of Kerry’s wonderful achievements and contributions she has made to their club and the whole league.” Left (top) - Kerry Bilney in action in game 299 on ANZAC Day. motor MOTOR Breakthrough Steve Lines has been a rising star in sprintcar circles for the past few years and finally the hard working driver is reaping the rewards. Following is an excerpt from a feature story on the Mount Gambier driver from the Autumn issue of Southern Life. Mount Gambier sprintcar driver Steve Lines is on top of the sprintcar world. He claimed the toughest title in town – the World Series Sprintcar (WSS) Championship. It’s a battle of attrition and the need for consistency is paramount across the 12 round, 14 race series. And Steve Lines did it, setting the victory up with a flying start to the season and ensuring he walked that fine line between driving aggressively for a win and staying out of trouble for the remainder of the season. By the time the WSS season landed in Western Australia for the final rounds of the championship, Lines was sitting pretty in the lead

Lines said. “It’s a pat on the back to the whole team, not just me, everything’s just got to work - the consistency means more to me than anything else.”

The other reason the series victory meant so much to Lines is that it was a super strong field, one of the toughest in his time in sprintcars. “It was good

having Brooke Tatnell and James (McFadden) to push me all the time,” Lines said. “It was definitely one of the toughest fields in a few years.”

row so that was a good way to get into a good, safe position.” Lines let fellow front row driver Kerry Madsen secure the lead at the start and then sat in behind him. “I knew Brooke (Tatnell) would be coming hard so I just wanted to tuck in behind (Kerry) Madsen and stay out of trouble,” Lines said. “It’s tough when you have everything to lose and the other driver has got nothing to lose and everything to gain. I had never been in the situation before with the pressure of points and actually being in the running.” Lines had never finished outside the top 10 since lining up in the WSS Championship but he had never genuinely been in the running for the title. “It means more to me (to win the WSS Championship) because I guess everyone’s got a chance of winning any race on the night but to be the most consistent car over that many shows is really hard,”

and spent ?? nights driving smart and conservatively to ensure he held off his only challenger for the championship win – Brooke Tatnell. In the final race of the series the equation was simple, Tatnell had to win and Lines finish 13th or lower. Needless to say Lines opted for a safe drive, staying in the mix but certainly not pushing his luck or letting his competitive instinct to win every time he hits the track take over. The Western Australian leg went perfectly for the series leader with a win in Bunbury. “It was all about keeping the pressure on Brooke (Tatnell),” Lines said. “It was the perfect start.” Taking the chequered flag first before heading into the final two nights in Perth gave the Mount Gambier driver a good buffer, while still not an unassailable lead in the championship race. “Basically it came down to the last night and I just had to keep it clean,” Lines said. “I started on the front
