LOCAL Second If you have been watching Channel 10 over the past week, chances are you’ve seen a number of promotions for the upcoming series of So You Think You Can Dance Australia. And chances are you’ve seen the promotion that features Sam Malseed - the Mount Gambier born and bred dancer, from MJ Dance Studio, who has made his
chance for budding musical theatre star way through the audition maze and is set to appear on the show. Channel 10 is yet to announce an official air date for the series. Secrecy, as it always does with these reality shows, has surrounded Sam’s application, initial audition and every phase of the selection process since. And the 18 year old dancer has to remain tight lipped about his experience thus
far, despite the entire region, and indeed, nation, aware this Mount Gambier talent clearly has what it takes, after featuring on the individual profile advertisement for the show that is peppering the airwaves. His life has been a whirlwind since progressing past the initial application and audition stage and to add to the workload, he is also preparing for his final assault on the National Showcase in Queensland this week. Sam finished inside the top five last year and was the highest scoring soloist behind a dancer who had already appeared in Billy Elliot. He has harboured a desire to make his name on the stage as a dancer or musical theatre star for some time and after being accepted, alongside fellow MJ alumni Katarina Gajic, on
the cancelled Everybody Dance Now reality TV show, the chance to again use the broadcast medium to further his career is a rare second chance. While everyone surrounding Sam and the show cannot reveal any details about the experience thus far, a publicity consultant for the show said they were looking forward to letting Sam loose on the local media to garner much needed support for what is a potentially exciting journey. Above - Sam Malseed in action during the 2013 National Showcase. Left - Sam celebrates MJ Dance Studio’s 25th anniversary at the end of last year with Alex Bond.

region’s artistic talent on show Until January 31 - 12/12 Exhibition - PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND The annual 12/12 exhibition endeavours to celebrate and bring awareness to nature, in particular the natural environment in South West Victoria, creating a visual dialogue around the very broad theme of environmental change. The objectives of this exhibition are to provide a creative, noncommercial and explorative environment, for emerging and mid career artists, from Sydney and the South West, to create innovative work related to the theme. This year’s 12/12 exhibition, curated by Catherine Bailey, will focus on work made out of fibre and textile from artists such as Carmel Wallace, Cherree Densley, Deb Saunders and Kellie Frankland from South West Alternative Medium Project Inc (SWAMP). back in time at Portland market
Some of the rarest movie posters in Australia will be on display at the Portland District Health summer market this Friday. Collector Rick Bayne will display a selection of old movie posters, some dating back to the 1930s, at the market. It is the first time the posters have been displayed in Portland. The market is a community fund-raiser for new special care facilities at PDH. It is planned to redevelop two rooms in the hospital’s sub-acute ward into a new special care room which will provide facilities for palliative care, caring for people with dementia and others needing close monitoring. Mr Bayne, who is the PDH media liaison officer, has a huge collection of posters from the 1920s to modern day. “I have a whole room filled with movie posters, mostly in a specially-built storage cabinet,” he said. “I probably have about 10,000 posters and lobby cards and am always looking to add to the collection. “Obviously I won’t be able to display all of them but I will bring a car load of items to show the different styles
and sizes from over the years.” Mr Bayne’s collection includes early Australian titles, Elvis Presley, sciencefiction and horror, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. The collection includes some only known examples of rare posters. Most of the posters that will be on display are not for sale but Mr Bayne will have a selection of items to sell. “I only ever sell a poster if I have a spare copy. I have been lucky to buy a few big collections over time which has helped me to continue growing my collection,” he said. Mr Bayne said he liked the colour and images of posters from the 1950s. “I tend to like anything with a monster on it,
sporting talent earns a helping hand
particularly the colourful Australian posters,” he said. His collection also includes posters from the United States and England. The market will be on the hospital grounds from 5.30-8pm and will also feature books, jewellery, soap, candles, cards, and plants. Visitors to the market will be able to view the posters for a gold coin donation to PDH. Anyone interested in participating in the market can contact Ms Malseed on CAMalseed. PDH@swarh.vic.gov.au.

Merry Christmas to all our loyal Lifestyle1 and Collected Stupidity readers out there. I hate to start another year in a negative way but I didn’t really have that great a Christmas. I shouldn’t be surprised mind you. I always build it up a little too much. The Christmas problems actually started a day or two before Christmas when little Shaquille picked up a nasty case of gastro which stretched through Christmas day and for another couple of days. Without getting too graphic, let’s just say that someone needs to keep working on nappy design and features because the current ones were not up to the challenge and couldn’t contain the business. With that problem in mind, throw in the fact that he had also developed some allergy to being on the ground and insisted on being carried at all times throughout the day. It’s possible that the
Lifestyle1.net - 006
above issues didn’t help with my mindset when the next problem emerged at lunch time. I’ll get to the point and just say it: Christmas crackers. What on earth is going on with Christmas crackers? As usual my Christmas cracker contained the classic paper crown. I love the paper crown, to the point that I am actually still wearing it as I sit here typing this here now. I received a lovely plastic frog which also provides plenty of enjoyment. I like to gather up everyone’s plastic toys from their Christmas crackers and then hide them in the pockets of whichever family member has drunk the most alcohol. It’s fun in
the execution as you still have to be quite sneaky to hide them. There’s also something quite entertaining imagining their bewilderment when they wake up finding coloured plastic items in their bed or wherever they have undressed the previous evening. So everything was fine until I pulled out the little piece of paper. The joke was atrocious. “What is a vampire’s favourite fruit? A blood orange.” Is that pathetic or what? For starters it’s just not funny. Secondly, does it have any relevance at all to Christmas? Surely it needs to relate to Christmas in some way. I checked my Auntie Mo’s joke as she happened to be sitting next to me. “What do vampires
sing on New Year’s Eve? Auld Fang Syne.” Now I was starting to think that maybe the manufacturers of the crackers had accidentally sent the ones they’d made for Transylvanian Christmas celebrations to Australia and all the people in Transylvania were wondering what jokes about shrimps on a barbie have to do with Christmas! Yes this one was more relevant to the Christmas period at least but I’m still not convinced that having a vampire theme is what they should be aiming for at Christmas. The next one I read was, “Where do ghosts go swimming? The Dead Sea”. So we’re off the vampires but we’re still on the broader theme of supernatural creatures. By this stage I was irate. The jokes were weak and not Christmas themed. I write about it today hoping that Don Pegler or Tony Pasin or whoever will notice and decide to do something about this. We can’t let these sort of weak jokes appear in our Christmas crackers next year as it will bring about the end of society as we know it. I’d like to finish on a positive note and tell you that my Mum is obviously reading my articles because she gave me a new pair of socks for Christmas. They were luxurious and soft and will give me plenty of joy over the coming year. But probably what made them most special was thinking how many packets of cigarettes my mother must have had to save and then swap in jail to get them from one of the other inmates. If you’d like to share weak Christmas cracker jokes with me, please don’t email me at firstname.lastname@example.org

for cadets to join local program
At the end of last year, the 48th Army Cadet Unit conducted their end of year parade at the MacKenzie Army Training Depot on Shepherdson Road in Mount Gambier. The parade was the culmination to a busy year for the cadets. They participated in three weekend camps, including an abseiling activity, as well as the annual seven day field exercise, conducted at RAAF Base Edinburgh and the Murray Bridge Training Area. As well as the ‘bush’ activities, the cadets were involved in a number of ceremonial duties throughout the year. These included Dawn Service at Port MacDonnell, marching in the ANZAC Day parade, catafalque party for Reserve Forces Day and a guard of honour at the Limestone Coast Tattoo. Many cadets were recognized for their efforts this year with the presentation of trophies. threat set to tackle ballet career
If you’d asked Cooper Terry 12 months ago what he would be doing in 2014 chances are he would have said going into Year 11 at Grant High School, continuing his dancing at MJ Dance Studio, continuing his singing lessons and hopefully finding some locally based opportunities for any of the skills this triple threat possesses. Instead, the 15 year old is moving to Sydney to take up a position at the prestigious Studio Tibor – one of Australia’s premier ballet studios. It all started with a weekend workshop from the studio’s principal Tibor Horvath at Mount

Gambier’s MJ Dance Studio and has ended with a successful audition and a teenager that is now set to leave home, move away alone and take the first steps in what he hopes will be a long career in the
performing arts. And while 2014 will now see Cooper living away from his family with a host family in Sydney and spending 8.30am-5pm, Monday to Friday in intense classes at the studio, he will not be completely alone as in a rare occurrence, the Mount Gambier based dance school has produced two 15 year olds that have been talent identified and are heading to Studio Tibor. Edenhope’s Katarina Gajic is also making the bold move to Sydney and will be part of the 2014 intake alongside her MJ alumni Cooper. (Katarina’s story is on page ??). Cooper and the MJ dance family first met Tibor when he was an adjudicator at a recent Mount Gambier Eisteddfod and with those networks fostered through MJ principal Maria Slape, a weekend workshop for the school’s ballet students was
organised. That was held in late August last year and immediately the Hungarian born teacher, who did his training in Sweden, had his eyes on both Cooper and Katarina as potential starts of the future in ballet. For Cooper, packing his bags in a couple of weeks time to head to Sydney to live and study ballet is a far cry from the boy, who just five years ago started dancing because a few of his school friends were already dancing at MJ. “I was always hanging out with mainly girls at school and doing cartwheels and stuff like that and they kept asking me to come and see Maria and see if I liked the dancing,” Cooper said. “Basically Maria asked if I could point my feet and it started from there.” Cooper had never contemplated dancing prior to that, although admits to having done plenty of his own moves in the privacy of his own home. “Because of that Mum did think I would enjoy it and so I started going to classes,” Cooper said. He admits he copped a little bit of flack at school but it was very early on that he realised he wanted performing to be a big part of his future. Like many boys, Cooper started with hip hop but only really hit his straps when he was invited to do solos and started the jazz and contemporary styles of dance. Clearly the young dancer had a talent. He attended his first class in September 2008 and was competing by the following May. The ballet certainly came later but for the past 18 months, it has been a focus for the multi-talented teenager. As most dancers will attest, ballet is the foundation of all dance and if you can nail those techniques it goes a long way to building your skills in the other dance genres. Most people that have seen Cooper perform over the past five years, whether as a dance, in singing competitions or in school productions, like the hugely

combining the best Coonawarra has to offer February 8 & 9 - Coonawarra Classic Clash - Coonawarra Park - From 9.30am each day The Annual ‘Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash’ Petanque tournament will be held at the piste, in the Coonawarra Park. The ‘Classic Clash’ has become a highlight of the national petanque calendar, with some of Australia’s best players coming from Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and the Limestone Coast to compete in this prestigious event. The tournament is open to all standards of petanque players, and players must register before 9.30am on both days. Spectators are even more welcome.

successful Xanadu, Grant High School’s 2013 school production, would have guessed a future in musical theatre and Cooper still has that as part of his dreams for the future. “The ballet opportunity has really come out of the blue but it’s such an amazing opportunity and taking this chance, whether I succeed or not, will do no harm to anything else I want to pursue,” he said. And with ballet you have to start young and both Cooper and Katarina have no time to lose in that respect. “It is now or never as far as ballet goes,” he said. Studio Tibor looks to produce dancers that earn spots in ballet companies both here in Australia and overseas. “It is the most secure area you can go into because if you are in a company it’s a regular paycheck, not like going from one musical to another and never knowing when you’re next job will be,” Cooper said. “Going to Tibor’s school will really improve my dancing and it will be great for me as a person to be away from home and learning independence and responsibility.” Attending the school has no finish line as such – students study until they are picked up by a company and traditionally that takes 12-18 months but can be as soon as six months. “Tibor seems to think Europe of the US for me,” Cooper said. He will also be keeping up his other sills while in Sydney if time permits and has already looked into acrobatic classes, and pursuing his singing and acting as well. The home stay family he has been placed with has a son who attends Studio Tibor and Cooper already feels right at home with his adopted family. School looks set to be on the backburner although exemptions, part time study and the like are still all being worked through. Prior to the
Sydney adventure though comes National Showcase in Queensland as part of the MJ contingent. Cooper made the Top 10 dancers in 2013 and is again looking to go out with a bang as his young career looks set to take off. Past MJ students Euan Doidge and Matt Cram, both who have gone on to pursue their performance dreams, have been huge inspirations for Cooper and he stays in regular contact with both. Cooper starts at Studio Tibor at the end of this month.

Want to help reach, engage and support disadvantaged people? Call for expressions of interest Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast is seeking applications from eligible organisations to deliver projects under the Skills for Jobs in Regions Program. The Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology’s (DFEEST) Skills for Jobs in Regions Program engages South Australians who are disconnected from learning, training and work in innovative, tailored workforce participation projects which respond to local skill and workforce needs. The Skills for Jobs in Regions program prepares people for further education and sustainable employment through projects which combine career services, accredited and non-accredited training, individual and family case management, structured mentoring, and post-participation and post-employment support. Applications are invited from organisations that have a local physical presence in the Limestone Coast, to administer projects that provide an opportunity to increase participation for the most disadvantaged people in our community including soft skills development, socialisation and engagement, learning and training. Projects are designed to raise the individual participant’s ability to a work-ready level or to ensure they are capable of engaging into the Skills for All pipeline. In 2013/2014 there are five projects totally $140,000 being offered for open tender. Details on the individual projects, eligibility criteria and application process are available by visiting our website: http://www.rdalimestonecoast.org.au/index.php/skillsforjobs or from Mae Steele, Project Officer for Employment and Training Programs at Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast. For all enquiries and to register your interest please contact Mae Steele on (08) 8723 1057 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org by the Friday 17th January 2014. achiever set to scale big heights
Most dancers that graduate from MJ Dance Studio and head further afield to pursue their chosen career are 17 or 18 years old but Katarina Gajic has
bucked that trend and long with close friend Cooper Terry, will head to Sydney to the well respected Studio Tibor at the end of this month to focus on a future
in ballet. Katarina is a stunning performer, who only last year partnered fellow MJ dancer Sam Malseed, in the cancelled TV show Everybody Dance Now, but she is a quiet girl and to think of this slightly built teenager heading to Sydney alone seems daunting at best. “I am a bit nervous of course but I am so excited and really looking forward to this,” Katarina said. “I will be dancing every day and working on my technique every day.” The Edenhope based dancer will be staying with grandparents in Sydney and knows that
will make the transition easier. After seven years at MJ Dance Studio, Katarina is no stranger to travel. Her parents have been
ferrying her to and from classes and rehearsals for all that time, let alone the eisteddfods and competitions elsewhere in Australia. Along with
Cooper Terry, who will also be attending the same schools, and Steph Newton, who has opted to go down the contemporary path, earning a position at Sydney’s Ev & Bow dance school, Katarina was one of three MJ dancers Tibor Horvath earmarked as having potential as future stars of ballet. Katarina’s dance journey started because her mother Heidi thought she had too much energy and had her doing a variety of sports and other activities and in the end it was dance that stuck. The 15 year old admits ballet was not always her favourite. “I wanted to do jazz and the like because they were so much fun and I still love doing all those other styles,” Katarina said. “But I do love ballet.” One suspects the discipline and preciseness of the craft may well appeal to this young lady, who unlike Cooper, who confesses to having no real desire

to continue his school work at this stage, will be working hard to keep her education up. “If it gets too much I will pull back to part time but I want to finish my schooling,” she said. She has completed Year 12 dance and psychology already. Tibor has already told Katarina she has beautiful feet, her turnout is amazing, but she knows there is much work to be done. “My arms and my jumping need a lot of work but I’m ready to give it everything,” she said. Like the three of the other four graduating MJ students, Katarina is off to National Showcase one last time this week, and rehearsing has been keeping her well and truly busy. She has five solos, a duo with Sam Malseed and 10 troupe performances on her agenda before starting as a student at Studio Tibor at the end of the month. party season in the West Wimmera
From a country music festival to billycart races, from a cricket challenge to dirt racing and from the
fun and fashion of country racing cups to quickshears, the West Wimmera has a jam packed social calendar
locked in for the next three months. As always, it is the Lake Charlegrak Country Music Marathon that heads the summer entertainment. The two day country V Info music extravaganza C is always held on the third weekend Edenhope in February and this Kaniva year the February 15 Harrow and 16 event will be headlined by names including Adam Brand, Amber Joy Poulton and Wildcard. The celebration of country music also doubles as a community fundraiser with proceeds from the weekend filtered back to the Edenhope & District Hospital as well as other local charities. Country music isn’t
the only distinctly rural tradition in the spotlight though with the running of both the Edenhope and Apsley Cups. While there is still a focus on the horse racing and the genuine lovers of the sport of kings, country cups are even more a social event than they are a sporting contest. The Edenhope Cup on March 8 and Apsley Cup on March 22 are days filled with as much fun, food, fashion and family entertainment as they are riding silks and saddles. The JH Greenhill West Wimmera Shire Edenhope Cup has been run and won since 1935 while the

Apsley Racing Club is the oldest surviving racing club in Victoria, having started back in 1855. The history of both race days, as well as the opportunity for the community to frock up and enjoy a
day of racing, music, food and wine is what makes these two of the biggest social days on the region’s annual calendar. Harrow is another of the West Wimmera communities that continues to punch
above its weight in terms of community activity and January 18 and 19 and March 9 are the two huge weekends in the town best known for its long running Sound & Light Show. The January 18 and 19 event is as rural as it gets - a B & S Ball, the Tussock Jumpers at Johnny Mullagh Park. Tickets are $125 and are available at the door and include all drinks, food, entertainment and camping. For more details contact Sam on 0419 122 333. From national billycart trials, to the annual quickshear competition to the annual Johnny Mullagh Shield Cricket Match, March 9 is an action packed day Sunday as part of Labour Day weekend activities. The annual Johnny Mullagh Shield Cricket Match celebrates the township’s famous Aboriginal cricketer. The match commemorates the first cricket tour of England by an Australian team - the historic 1868 tour team was an indigenous Australian team. Interspersed amongst the special calendar highlights is the Apsley Markets February 23, March 30 & April 27), Kaniva Lions Car & Bike Show (February 1), Kaniva Town Garage Sale (March 22) and Apsley & District Motorsports Dirt Circuit Racing (March 16 & April 13).

We could all do with a makeover from time to time and that’s exactly what’s happened at DialA-Toner, with owners Greg Appleyard and Glenda Deutscher recently purchasing the Mount Gambier Cartridge World franchise (formerly in Gray Street). Put simply, DialA-Toner is now Cartridge World. But really that’s all that has changed aside from the proudly local business now having the backing of a nationwide franchise and the buying power, expertise and product and service ranges that come with being part of a large corporate family. and receive a limited-edition silk bag with an eyeliner brush valued at $35 Hometown favourite Steve Lines will genuinely be the favourite when Borderline Speedway hosts its 19th King’s Challenge on January 23. Lines has never won the annual Glenburnie track event but comes in on the back of exemplary form, narrowly sitting second in the World Series Sprintcar championship series before the weekend’s Brisbane round, with a win already at his home track in the 2013/14 season and having taken out the prestigious Speedweek over the Christmas/New Year period. “Linesy is certainly the man to beat at the moment,” club secretary Kerry Hill said. He has come close and last year just missed the podium with a fourth placing behind long time rival Robbie Farr, who is set to return to defend his 2013 title. 2013 runner up James McFadden has not yet nominated but is traditionally a last minute inclusion in the popular Mount Gambier event. David Murcott, who finished third last year, is another of what is expected to be a 60-plus strong field come race time on January 23. “We expect to top the 60 entry mark and to at least get as many nominations as last year when we had 62,” Hill said. There are already 10 American drivers confirmed in the field with more expected to nominate as the event draws near, with every State in Australia also represented. And it’s not just the top drivers making their way to the Borderline track, world recognised sprintcar commentator
Johnny Gibson, from the World of Outlaws, will join Wade Aunger in commentary for the 2014 event. Borderline organisers have scheduled the event on a Thursday night this year in a bid to work closely with Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway. “We can’t compete with Warrnambool and expect the event to still be a success,” Hill said. “When you’re in close proximity to a track you have to work hand in hand and program
your events to allow the drivers to compete at both venues around a similar time frame.” And while Lines certainly stands as the best local hope, he is not the only local driver hitting the track to secure the treasured home track title - Glen Sutherland, Adam Sealey and Jake Tranter will also be strutting their stuff in a bid for a spot in at least the A main. Gates open at 4pm on January 23, with the engine starts and hot laps from 5.30pm.

Three South East based softballers have helped South Australia to a fourth place finish at last weeks’ Australian Under 17 Softball Championships in Blacktown, New South Wales. Warriors teenagers Amber Hood and Eleanor McClintock and Demons talent Cody Manning were all part of the South Australian team. The Croweaters played Queensland in their opening clash on day one and went down narrowly 4-5 when the Maroons managed to score three runs in the final dig to snatch the victory. Amber played catcher in the opening round with Eleanor positioned at rightfield. Both girls secured a safehit with Eleanor batting in one of SA’s four runs and taking three outfield catches. Game two on the first day of the championships saw the girls taking on Tasmania and going down 1-5. Amber started at centre field with Cody and right field, before she moved to left field, centre field and finished at third base. Eleanor entered the game, pitching for one innings and securing a strikeout, before finishing out the match at centre field. All three girls had a turn in the batting box with Amber and Eleanor both hitting safely in the loss. On day two, the South Australians took on Victoria with Amber starting at right field, before moving to short stop and Eleanor at centre field. It was a tough outing for the SA girls who went down 2-10. Western Australia was the next assignment on day two with Amber catching and Cody at right field. Cody picked up two safehits from her two turns at bat, with Amber also securing a safehit and completing an out at second when a runner looked to steal on her strong arm. Eleanor was given one innings, the sixth, on the pitching mound and gave up no hits. SA won the clash easily 8-1. The ACT was South Australia’s next opponent in the first match on day three of the championships with Amber again catching, Eleanor at centrefield and Cody starting at third base. Amber again started strongly throwing out the batter at first after a wayward swing, repeating the does in the third innings to ensure her side stayed on top of the territory line-up. Cody secured a safehit and took a good line drive catch, while Eleanor also took a catch, in a match where she only fielded and was replaced with a designated hitter as her team went on to win 4-2. The second match saw SA take on eventual champions New South Wales as Cody enjoyed a place in the starting line-up at third base., taking a catch, securing a strong out with a good throw and using her good eye and speed around the bases to secure her team’s only run for the match. Eleanor also tested her pitching skills with one innings against the competition giants and gave up no hits or walks in a solid display.

Day four saw the South Australians again tackle the ACT, picking up another victory, 9-4. Amber was back behind the catcher’s mask, Cody was at third base and Eleanor
secured a starting berth at centre field. It was a strong performance in the batting box from Amber who picked up two safehits and batted two runs in for her team in the process, with Eleanor also producing an identical performance with two safehits and two RBIs. Cody also picked up a safehit in the victory. The SA girls then had to face NSW again and produced arguably their best performance of the championships, going down narrowly 9-10 after scores were locked away 6all after seven innings. Eleanor started on the pitching mound and Cody at third base and in an impressive effort by Eleanor, she kept the eventual champions scoreless in the first two digs, ending her four innings stint with the score at 2-5 before moving to centre field. She also picked up a safehit. The SA girls defeated Western Australia 8-2 first thing on day five before taking on Queensland and going down 5-8, with all three girls sitting out of the starting line-up but still managing to be part of one of the plays of the match when Eleanor was injected into the batting line-up and hit a triple that scored Amber, who had also been subbed into the batting box. But there was still work to do on this triple header day with SA then taking on Tasmania, sending the game into extra innings with a run in the seventh innings but then losing in the eighth. Amber started as catcher, Eleanor at centre field and

picks up where he left off at the 2013 national championships
At the 2013 Australian Country Cricket Championships, South Gambier and Tea Tree Gully allrounder Adam Somerfield won player of the championships and the speedster has brought his A game to the 2014 Canberra championships having already taken 11 wickets and scored 111 runs in just three outings. Somerfield is one of six South East affiliated players in the South Australian Outbacks line-up that also includes Kieran Ashby (South Gambier); Nick Savage (Mil Lel); Josh Reader (Mil Lel); Josh Fidler (Mil Lel) and Nick Clayfield (Penola). The Outbacks easily outclassed East Asia Pacific in their opening round, securing a rare outright victory, with Somerfield making 43 and
claiming 5/25 and 2/38, while Clayfield was also damaging with the ball , taking 1/16 and 4/29 in his debut for the State senior side. Savage and Fidler, who comes to the Outbacks from the Hamilton competition, also picked up a wicket each in the victory. In the second round, the Outbacks fell short of the target set by Victoria Country in what was a one day fixture, losing by 36 runs. Somerfield and Clayfield were again the pick of the Outbacks with the ball, Somerfield taking 2/47 and Clayfield 2/44. The Outbacks then tackled New South Wales over the weekend in a two day game and fell agonosingly short of first innings points, dismissed nine runs shoy of the target. Port Lincoln’s Andrew Frick, who is skipper of the 2014 line-up, picked up three wickets and again it was Clayfield (2/64) and Somerfield (2/45) doing the damage. Somerfield backed that up with a half century. At 6/250 the Outbacks looked in a good position but they lost their last four wickets for seven runs. South Australia rounded out their campaign with a one day clash against Queensland and then a Twenty20 clash with Western Australia. The 2014 championships have introduced the new format incorporating all three forms of the game. The championships traditionally were made up of all two day matches unless weather intervened. Left - Former Penola paceman Nick Clayfield, picturd in action for the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association against Glenelg, has been one of the most consistent bowlers for the Outbacks. Above right - Adam Somerfield, pictured receiving his 2013 player of the championships award, is again leading the way for the Outbacks at the 2014 Australian Country Cricket Championships.
