round winners unveiled in Sports SE awards
Millicent based taekwondo athlete Chantelle Fuller was announced the round 10 winner in the athelete category of the Sports SE Sports Star Awards. The tenth, and final round, of winners were annouced earlier this month, with the presentation of the
overall winners in each category and an induction into the Sports SE Hall of Fame set down for Sunday, September 15, at a gala afternoon with international tennis coach Roger Rasheed as the headline act. Chantelle started taekwondo training in 2006 and last
year was part of the silver medal winning Australian team that attended the ITF Taekwondo-Do World Championships, in Canada. While not selected for the sparring event, Chantelle also competed in that at the championships and was instrumental in the Australian team’s podium finish. Her mother and sister also train in taekwondo and Chantelle is currently working towards attaining her second degree black belt. The coach award
for round 10 went the way of East Gambier Football Club senior coach Phil Carman. The high profile former VFL star came to the kennel this season to develop the club’s young list. The Bulldogs unfortunately again narrowly missed finals though. The round 10 club award winner was the Keith Table Tennis Club - a club that has been running in the small community for more than six decades with only a short recess during that time.

Desperate to envigorate membership and attract a new generation to the sport, the club joined forces with the Active After Schools program and then independently organised a SAPSSASA team that won the C grade title this year. The club plans on sending a boys team, as well as high school teams, next year. Membership has grown signifcantly thanks to these initiatives with membership now sitting around a healthy 50 juniors and seniors. The
volunteer/official round 10 winner was motorsport stalwart Laurie Fox. The 86 year old, who still writes prolifically for The Border Watch and other media outlets, has been competing, officiating, administrating or promoting the sport for the past six decades and beyond. He has received an OAM for his services to the sport, as well as life membership and other accoaldes at local, State and national level.

Meals on Wheels is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary on a national level, with August 28 set down as National Meals on Wheels Day. Volunteers across the region will celebrate the historic milestone. Australian Meals on Wheels Association president Ron Welsh said this day marks the real progress they have made from those humble beginnings in South Melbourne, where a lady on a tricycle delivered a few meals to local residents. “It is an opportunity to highlight to the Australian people the significant contribution that is made to the community by 680 Meals on Wheels services and
over 75,000 volunteers across Australia”, he said. While the tradition and values of Meals on Wheels remain true to its origins 60 years ago, a focus on engaging people of all ages from all walks of life is unfolding and bringing renewed energy, ideas and vision to help the organisation continue to provide a vital service. In the Southern Grampians there are 260 Meals on Wheels volunteers who deliver more than 33,000 meals annually to clients in Hamilton, Coleraine and Penshurst. Council is always looking for new volunteers to contribute just an hour on a regular basis or as an emergency driver. Southern

Grampians Shire Council Meals on Wheels coordinator Bernie Ross said the volunteers not only provide hot, nutritious meals to their clients, they also provide an important community connection through calling at homes each day to provide a cheery welcome, daily contact and monitor the wellbeing of each valued client. “I encourage anyone who may be able to spare a couple of hours a week, or to volunteer as an emergency driver, to contact council to find out how you can be involved in this important service in our community,”

All Tough Tribe team members are currently in training for Tough Mudder (to be held on Phillip Island on September 14) at local gym Tough Fit Health and Fitness Training and are looking forward to the

Portland is to be the scene of a most extraordinary auction as the Glenelg Auction Centre, at Portland, has the most exciting catalogue of amazing militaria and collectable items set to go under the hammer. The auction will be held over two days, on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1, at the Old Woolstore Complex at 109 Learmonth Street. Auctioneer Brian O’Halloran will sell 2300 lots of truly remarkable and rare military history and collectables. The auction room is literally packed to the rafters, with the items made up of 1100 lots of militaria and 1200 lots of collectables, with most being unreserved. For investors and collectors alike, it is a chance to get their hands on one of the rare commododities that have not lost value during the global financial crisis, with demand, particualrly in the United States, actually increasing. A Queensland investor and collector has asserted that in the past 30 years, the average value increase in his portfolio has been 11% per annum. He is currently reducing his real estate portfolio to invest further in early militaria and collectables. There are 149 items of rare and collectable antique firearms, including 12 cased pairs of pistols and 440 blades, which incorporates swords, bayonets and knives. Other items include cased vintage whaling harpoon gun and original Japanese diving helmet, Samurai suit of armour, Texaco bowser, early games machines, Coke and Pepsi machines,
boats, nautical, reproduction Ned Kelly heavy steel armour, picklehaubs/helmets/caps, early tin toys, musical instruments, taxidermy, military and armoury books, branded boxes and trunks, naval and boating items, flags and signs, Nazi paraphenalia, train sets, fantastic scrimshaw, naval and fishing, buggy lamps, signs and tins, saddles, trench art, bird cages, early broad axes and ads, woodworking tools, ephemera, gramophones, radios, telephones, old churns, traps, scales, kitchenalia, coins, fob watches, medals, model planes, theodilites/micrometers, old riding boots, locks, Australiana tools, toboggans, bottles and patchwork quilts. The catalogue of items has originated from all corners of the globe and all photos and the two day catalogue are online at glenelgauctions.com.au. There will be online bidding but Brian O’Halloran says you need to view it to appreciate it. The auction rooms are open for viewing daily from 10am to 5pm.

hatchling gets worse rather than better. So daddy gator eats him. And then gets a really good night’s sleep. So that’s win win. Or maybe just win. But that’s fifty percent good I guess. As I understand it some dinosaurs fossils have been found with juvenile fossils inside. Paleontologists have taken this as evidence that dinosaurs ate their young. The most common theory held by the world’s leading dinosaur scientists is that the juvenile dinosaur would spit its dummy on the floor, mummy dinosaur picks the dummy up, bubba throws it on the floor again, dad then picks it up and the baby throws the dummy on the board. Muma or Dada would then indicate this was a stupid game by eating their baby. Baby foxes have been known to eat their young, commonly known as kits, cubs or pups. Most commonly, this occurs when the youngsters sticks chewed up bread into the family DVD player rendering it completely unusable. It’s not exclusive to land animals either. Great white sharks are known to commonly eat their young when they’re trying to watch the sports part of the news and the little buggers won’t
shut up. Baby snakes have been known to devour their young because the snakelet waits until the father snake changes his nappy and within five minutes of the change fills the new nappy completely with poop. As if all this isn’t enough, even herbivorous animals will occasionally eat their young. Cows will eat their calves because they’re naturally inquisitive and want to know what all the fuss with hamburgers is about. They don’t really get the full effect though cos they don’t have all that’s necessary to make a hamburger. I mean, they don’t have a cooktop, and can’t even make a fire. They’re only cows, people. Please do not take anything written here to mean that humans should eat or use any violence against their darling young ones. I don’t condone it in the animal kingdom either. I’m just saying I see where they’re coming from. Maybe we should try to raise some money or something. I just thought of that. That’s an issue that I’d like to discuss with any of the candidates if they have the grapefruit to have a chat with me. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org cowards.

Becoming a parent myself just over a year ago has helped me understand animal behaviour better. So I’ve worked out why animals eat their young and I thought I’d share it with you all. I know what you’re thinking: is there anything you’re not an expert on Robbie? The simple answer is, not really. Anyway, what you wanted to know. Lions sometimes eat their cubs because the mummy lion brings home a perfectly good zebra steak and the naughty little baby lion refuses to eat it. So then the daddy lion scoots back out to the tundra and
brings down an antelope and brings that back to precious little cub and he wants noodles. So the daddy lion and the mummy lion eat the cub. Alligators are sometimes known to eat their hatchlings. This mainly happens at night time. The bull (male alligator) is having a really good sleep in the burrow or wherever they sleep (I’m so tired I can’t even be bothered looking on Wikipedia for some questionable facts to pad my article out with). The cow (mummy gator) has gotten out of the burrow several times trying to get the little baby gator to stop screaming (or grinding his teeth or whatever they do). She is so tired that she spits it and tells Dad to go and have a go at putting precious to sleep. Dad bull gives it a couple of goes but little

Pisces You need to start taking a more frugal approach to your finances this week, especially when it comes to personal luxury items. Stop eating out and start cooking at home and there are plenty of low cost ways to have fun without going out all the time. Aries You might as well brace yourself now as nothing you do this week will seem to impress those in power. You might be tired of always being the one who compromises but get used to it at least for a while. Taurus You really need to snap out of the fear and insecurity that seems to be holding you back. If you want things to change you need to be confident in your own abilities. Take a risk, a calculated one, but a risk and don’t be so cautious. Gemini You really need to rein in your spending on luxury items and things you want rather than need - now is the time for more financial prudence. There seems to be some unexpected expenses looming on the horizon so don’t leave yourself short by being reckless. Cancer You really need to let go of a past hurt - stop holding a grudge and move past the incident and look to a brighter future. There are plenty of opportunities on the horizon but because you’re consumed with the past you’re in danger of missing out. Leo You have a tendency to put the people you really care about on a pedestal and think they can do no wrong - this is proving to be a mistake in some instances so you really need to try and be more objective. Holding a loved one in high regard in itself is no wrong but make sure you are also basing your assessments in reality not fantasy.
Virgo You really need to start accepting that perfection is not attainable and relaxing your standards is not compromising your princples, it’s being realistic. You will be happier and so will those around you if you try and be less rigid and unforgiving. Libra You need to step out of the limelight and let others close to you have their time to shine. You have deserved your fame and acclaim but it is now time to step back and let others bask in their own glory. Perhaps a party in thier honour would be a good start. Scorpio You need to stop stressing so much about the future and deal with the here and now. Really get stuck into a project that you enjoy and focus your attentions on that and get some positive energy back in your life. Anxiety acheives nothing. Sagittarius Whatever you do, please don’t fall for the trap of thiking you can buy someone’s affection. Someone close to you might be gunning for an expensive treat but giving it to them will not guarantee their love and support. Try strengthening your bond with time together rather than trinkets. Capricorn Financial pressure due to low pay or revenue is starting to take its toll and you really do need to act - whether it’s making your case for a payrise, or if you’re the boss, raising prices or cutting staff or whatever the prudent business move would be. Aquarius You still seem to have some anger towards a close friend or lover simmering under the surface and you really need to deal with it and let it go or it could become more toxic than it ever should. Whether it’s a personal or professional relationship, the time for healing is now.
care service returns
Southern Grampians Shire Council is pleased to announce that after many years of absence, a Family Day Care Service has returned to Dunkeld. Janelle Hassett and her family have recently returned to Dunkeld from Western Australia and being an experienced early childhood educator, holding her Diploma of Children’s Services, Janelle decided to set up a Family Day Care Service from her home. Most of Janelle’s experience in children’s services has been in centre based care, including time in Warrnambool. “I chose to set up a Family Day Care Service as it is a great way to re-enter the workforce and at the same time be there for our own three children before and after school,” said Janelle. Janelle’s service philosophy
is based on providing a warm, caring and fun environment, where children are able to run, explore and enjoy being themselves. “I want to provide opportunities for the children to be creative, to form an understanding of themselves and their environment,” she said. There is a great demand for child care in Dunkeld and it has not taken long for Janelle to become fully utilised; though casual care may occasionally be available. Southern Grampians Shire Council children’s services coordinator Lyn Hodkinson said initial flyers displayed around Dunkeld initiated expressions of interest from working families seeking immediate child care. “Due to the overwhelming response we have not been able to place all children but it has
been so exciting to once again have a Family Day Care Service operating in Dunkeld,” Ms Hodkinson said. Janelle is operating her service four days per week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 6pm. “I am glad to be given the opportunity to be able to work with such a great group of children and their families. Working with children is sometimes challenging but it is also so rewarding,” Janelle said. Janelle is planning to network with the Glenthompson Family Day Care In-Venue Service, which will provide valuable professional support and an opportunity for the children in her care to socialise with those attending the in-venue service. “With Janelle in Dunkeld and the in-venue service at Glenthompson, council does have a greater capacity to offer child care and education places within the local area,” Ms Hodkinson said. “While Janelle currently has no booked places available, the in-venue service in Glenthompson does have availability on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. “Family Day Care is a wonderful child care and education service for smaller towns. Not only does it provide a quality early childhood service but it provides a local person with a

Every third Wednesday of each month at 11am, the U3a (University of the Thurd Age) Art Appreciation group meets at the Riddoch Art Gallery to look and hear about the latest exhibition, acquisition or special art issue. Led by Riddoch Artc Gallery director Simon Klose, the sessions are usually one hour and often move to different parts of the building including the storeroom, where the collection is housed and catalogued. It is fairly rare for art galleries to open the store room to the public, so these sessions are always popular. Learning about the processes involved in cataloguing, preparing and installing artworks in galleries can be an eye opener, the procedures and records have to be fastidiously observed to maintain working relationships with other public galleries such the Australia National Gallery. The changing exhibitions are always popular, with such a wide variety of styles and images across three galleries to look at, the hour slips away very quickly, and sessions often continue over lunch at a nearby café. Everyone is welcome to join the U3a Art Appreciation sessions. The Annual Fee for U3a Membership is $25. The courses are wide and varied, and those interested in the art group are welcome to join on the meeting day at the gallery. Lifestyle1.net - 024

A decade of dedication to making clients look their best Ainslie Lamb began her in-salon apprenticeship on May 1, 2000. Working alongside qualified hairdressers, Ainslie had strong guidance learning the foundations that were needed to ignite a lifelong passion for hairstyling. A constant drive to learn, in addition to undertaking multiple training courses, and topped off with natural flair, Ainslie (pictured) was able to complete her apprenticeship early. She was signed off in August 2003. The timing was perfect as Ainslie was able to seize a business opportunity that presented and purchased her own salon a month later, when she was just shy of turning 20. A decade in business has seen Ainslie achieve multiple goals, including winning awards at
hair competitions, successfully training three apprentices, building long lasting relationships with colleagues and established a solid and loyal clientele, in amongst taking time out to have two children. Her salon has always had a very welcoming environment. A place to not only have your `hair done’ but also a place for a chat, the personal hairdressing counselling that she provides so well. It is a fun and uplifting atmosphere where everyone leaves feeling good on the inside and out. Ainslie is able to sustain staying at the cutting edge of modern hair styling by regularly attending training courses both locally, Adelaide and interstate. Her passion for hairdressing has never wavered and
she is always able to offer the latest ideas in styles, colours and treatments. Working with you, the client, Ainslie also looks to develop a look that is both personal and fashionable. In November last year, Ainslie moved her salon to Brolga Street, with a fresh new look and more intimate setting. Here clients continue to receive the highest standard of styling with access to all hair and beauty services. Photo courtesy of Tanya Way Photography

Chinese Medical Centre “Our emphasis is on continually improving our professional knowledge, skills and customer service in the best interests of our clients. We want to help people effecitvely achieve ultimate health, vitality and longevity.”
Dr Nai-Li (Nancy) Chen Your Natural Health Care Specialists
What started as a trip to Australia to learn English for Chinese couple Nai-Li (Nancy) Chen and Xiang-Cheng (Steven) Mu has become a permanent move. Arriving in Melbourne as students, in 1990, the couple received permanent residency in 1995 and promptly set about travelling Australia to find somewhere to call home, at least for the short term. That search didn’t take very long. The couple were travelling from Melbourne to Adelaide, passing through Mount Gambier, and the rest, as they say, is history. That was 18 years ago, and the town Nancy and Steven fell in love with, is very much now considered home. “It was so tidy and clean and quiet and there were no Chinese medicine services,” Nancy said. “We moved here two days before we opened the business on April 10, 1995, with just our car and a trailer, we didn’t have much at all.” In the early years, the Chinese Medical Centre, in Sturt Street, was run by Nancy and Steven, as they juggled reception duties, appointments and raising their two children. They used just two rooms, one for reception and a waiting room and the other as a consulting room, in the Sturt Street home, living in the remainder of the premises. “We didn’t have a lot of patients in the first year,” Nancy said. Steeped in 5000 years of history, Chinese medicine, which at its heart is all
about prevention and healing yourself, has eventually established a solid reputation and soon Nancy and Steven saw patient numbers rise from in the hundreds, to the 15,000 strong client list it is today. They now operate four consulting rooms and have been joined in a full time capacity by Dr Guiwan (Wayne) Zhang, as well as two qualified and experienced massage therapists, that offer remedial and relaxation massage - Peter Wilson and Angela Melville. The recognition of Chinese medicine as a regulatory field of health care by the Australian Government in July last year, has further strengthened its standing in the community. Nancy brings with her both Chinese and Western medical credentials and qualifications, having been inspired to enter medicine by her parents. Her father was a renowned doctor in Chinese medicine and her mother was a western medicine trained practitioner. “We are all about helping people prevent and treat disorders, imbalances and diseases or illnesses by using natural therapies such as acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and massage,” Nancy said.

National Book Week was celebrated right across the region last week with the Mount Gambier Library getting right behind the long standing celebration. Book Week is an annual event which celebrates reading and literature in a fantastic way to try and attract children to the idea of reading. Started in 1945, Book Week is now celebrating its 68th birthday. Every year, a list of different Australian authors and their books are put onto a shortlist and split into different categories. A winner is eventually selected and then the process

begins again next year. Many schools organise different activities to celebrate Book Week, including the Book Week parade where children dress up and walk around as their favorite character for a day. “What the children do all depend on the teacher,” said Mount Gambier Library children’s services development manager Jaclyn Gosling. “People still read, it’s just that it might be on an iPad.” This year, the theme is Read across the Universe which was an exciting genre for children to explore. Kindergartens and schools visited the Mount Gambier Library all week to be a part of the week long activities on offer. The theme for last year was Fantasy which was something that most young children had not yet explored in their lives. National Reading Hour is always a big part of Book Week and last week was just as popular as ever. National Reading Hour was held on Saturday at the library, which offered milo and cookies for their pyjama clad guests. On Saturday, families snuggled up into the Children’s Area and listened to some fantastic stories with two of the lucky attendees wining a mini iPad each due to a competition that was being held by the library in conjunction with Public Libraries South Australia. Reading is an important activity that all people should try to encourage young children to do so next year, come down to the library and participate in the festivities of Book Week. By Josh King

When it comes to the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro 400, it is definitely a case of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But the 36th running of the popular offroad event does have a new look for 2013 as a large field converges on Teagle’s Quarry and the Mt Burr forest. Set down for September 6-8 and hosted by the Millicent Sand Buggy Club, the popular South Australian event is now a round of the newly formed ARB Australian Off Road Racing Series. School holiday program courtesy of a grant
South American style will come to Dartmoor during school holidays in 2013, thanks in part to a grant from United Way Glenelg (UWG). UWG has contributed $1800 to the Dartmoor Bush Nursing Centre to run Zumbatomic classes for country children who would otherwise have little or no access to holiday activities. Program partners Heywood Rural Health and the YMCA are also lending support. Zumbatomic is an offshoot of the popular Zumba Fitness program and is aimed specifically at primary school aged children. Classes are described as high energy fitness parties with participants learning choreographed routines incorporating moves from salsa, hip-hop and reggae set to the latest music. UWG executive officer Nicole Reefman said the program was a fun way for Dartmoor district kids to come together for both fun and fitness. “UWG is very pleased to be providing the funds to support the connection of young people living in and around Dartmoor,” Ms Reefman said. “Zumbatomic is great exercise as well as being a lot of fun and these classes are an opportunity for Dartmoor children and families to get active during the 2013 school holidays.” Classes will be run several times during each school holiday in 2013. Entry is by gold coin donation which includes a healthy snack after each class. library card system on the horizon
Book lovers around South Australia should be very excited for the next few weeks because of the new development that is happening in their local library. The new One Card system is going to be implemented which will allow people to borrow and returns books much more easily and the Statewide system will be up and running in Mount Gambier early next month. This new system is a project that both local governments and the South Australian government have been working on for more than three years to try and make South Australian public libraries even more accessible. Once this system is implemented
throughout the whole State, people will be able to borrow books from any library in the State and then return them at another. This will be especially handy for people who are prone to travelling for either work or pleasure. Once this system is implemented across South Australia, people will have access to more than four million different resources - however it will take another year for the system to be put into practice everywhere in South Australia. Previously, every library would have its own separate database which would hold their information but under the new system, all libraries will be on the same database. The libraries can

Macy and Academy Award winner Helen Hunt, the film is based on the true story of California–based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien. Portrayed by the exceptionally gifted John Hawkes – who
gives a career-defining performance, O’Brien’s story is the immensely poignant and surprisingly funny tale of a man, paralyzed by polio who - at age 38 – is determined to finally lose his virginity. Drinks and nibbles are from 6.30pm and the film screens 7pm. The film is rated MA and is in English. Everyone loves to receive a postcard in the mail, and most would have some odd trinket tucked away at the back of the cupboard purchased while on holidays. Postcards and souvenirs from Portland dating from the late 19thcentury to the 1970s come together in this exhibition from the Glenelg Shire Council Cultural Collection. The postcards show the changing face of Portland in the 20th century through a series of postcards of the foreshore, harbour, streetscapes, hotels and churches. The souvenirs include crockery, glass view-ware, felt pennants, cloth patches and tea towels, and range from the functional to purely decorative and from tasteful to wonderfully kitsch.

the game high advantage again before the Pioneers eventually ran out winner by 10. It means the South Conference grand final will now be played at the Icehouse on the Pioneers’ home pine on Friday, September 6. Aside from never surrendering the lead, the most pleasing aspect of the victory was the spread of contributors, and that it came without sharpshooter and reigning club MVP Erik Burdon, who remained in Perth to continue treatment on his injured groin. Tom Daly was outstanding, controlling the offence, taking on the defence with some stunning drives to the basket, some perimeter magic when required, and a relentless intensity with his defensive efforts. He finished the match with 19 points, six assists, two steals and even three rebounds as he showed great on court leadership for such a young player. NBL recruits Brad Hill and Ben Allen were also influential. Hill finished with a game high 20 points, as well as 10 rebounds and a steal, while Allen pulled in an impressive 13 rebounds, all at the defensive end of the court, and scored a valuable 16 points. And then there was the game of the skipper, Sutton, who was elevated to the starting five in the absence of good mate Burdon. His willingness to take on Nunawading’s tall timber in the paint and then dish to team mates for an open shot was pivotal. He finished the match with five assists and 11 points of his own, including two from beyond the arc, and was a key part of the defensive structure. cont. page 38
WOOD SPLITTER FOR HIRE

It took a minute and a half for the first points of the 2013 South Conference second semi final to be registered. It followed a couple of wayward three point attempts and no joy inside for the visitors and eventually came from a Tom Daly steal that the talented guard took all the way down court for an easy lay up. The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers had the lead, 2-0, and they never surrendered it. Nunawading challenged on several occasions in the contest, particularly in the third quarter, when Shane McDonald went on a shooting spree, scoring 14 of his game total 19 points, including two threes. But the Pioneers would not be denied, blowing the lead out to a game high 13 points on three occasions. With seven minutes to play in the first half, Titus Robinson dragged in a tough offensive board and earnt a trip to the foul line to make the difference 13 points; it was Robinson again with six and a half to play in the third, hitting a sweet long range RLA62833 jumper to make the advantage 13; and a three pointer from skipper Matt Sutton with a minute and a half to play restored

Robinson continued his unassuming role, working hard defensively and becoming an offensive threat when required. He finished with 11 points and threw a couple of blocks and steals in for good measure, while Jan Warbout hit a couple of critical threes, the first coming at the four minute mark of the opening quarter, courtesy of a Sutton dish, to earn the Pioneers a little breathing space in what was a basket for basket contest in the early going and one late in the same quarter to push the lead out beyond double figures. Nunawading now faces a rampaging Hobart, which
completely outclassed Kilsyth by 23 points. The Pioneers still have plenty of work to do though as they prepare for the South Conference final. They were smashed on the offensive boards, trailing 0-14 at half time and 4-23 at the final whistle. You give big guys inside that many bites at the cherry and it could come back and bite you. And if you were going to nit pick, conversion from the foul line could also be better. it was a respectable 67 percent on Friday night but when you earn a trip to the charity stripe, especially if a team is using the tactic to stop the clock and allow them a way back into the contest, you need to make them pay - on the scoreboard. The Pioneers’ preparations will be slightly hampered by the absence of Hill and Allen on Sydney Kings’ duties, as well as the rehabilitation and Wildcats’ commitments of Burdon but with a fortnight to prepare and a coach, who is all about preparation, you sense the 2013 championship campaign is still running pretty close to script. reinforces its commitment to Australia
Ford staged the global reveal of its long-awaited, Australian-developed Everest SUV at a major event in Sydney earlier this month, and reiterated its commitment to designing and engineering cars here beyond the closure of its local factories in 2016. The surprise world debut of the rugged T6 Ranger-based off-roader was one of the big-ticket items at a multi-milliondollar ‘Go Further’ future product event, which was held at Fox Studios and brought together media, dealers, staff and Ford Motor Co’s senior management team from Detroit including president and CEO Alan Mulally, COO Mark Fields and executive vice-president of global marketing, sales and service Jim Farley. After announcing in May that it was closing down its
animal charity looking for a boost
manufacturing operations in 2016, Ford was keen to make a signifcant demonstration to its continued commitment to the Australian arms of the business. The yet to be unveiled hew Ford SUV, the Everest, was much heralded at the Sydney event and its arrival will take Ford’s SUV range to four – also including the forthcoming EcoSport due in December, plus the Kuga and locally made Territory. The Everest (pictured right) will sell alongside a mildly facelifted Territory until the latter ceases production at the end of 2016. The utebased Everest’s utilitarian underpinnings may mean Ford will look to supplement it beyond this date with a more road-focused international model, perhaps the nextgeneration Explorer. Ford

also used the Go Further event to confirm it would – as expected – sell the next-gen Mustang (pictured below)as a new hero car following Falcon’s demise. It also gave the best look yet at the forthcoming Falcon facelift, due in the second half of next year. Ford pulled out its biggest global guns to reinforce its message to Australian customers that it will still import cars after it closes its production lines. By 2017, the company says it will offer
a completely refreshed line-up spanning 11 models – 70 per cent of which will have EcoBoost turbo engine power. One of the key messages delivered at the event was a renewed commitment to retaining the Victorianbased design and engineering facilities for Ford’s Asia-Pacific and Africa region beyond 2016. These facilities, which employ 1100 staff and include a design and engineering centre at Broadmeadows, a research and design centre in Geelong and a proving ground at Lara, perform major roles in creating new cars for global markets. As well as Everest and Ranger, notable assignments include the Indianmarket Figo, the Chinese Escort concept and a large proportion of development work on the forthcoming Mustang.

ADVERTORIAL I OG ROBERTS A car dealership principal singing the praises of a newly launched vehicle is nothing new. A car dealership principal testing the limits of the vehicle and checking himself, the values of the vehicle is a little more left field but that’s exactly what OGR principal Bryce Roberts did last week. Holden has been spruiking the fuel efficiency, among other standout features, of its new VF Commodore and Bryce decided the best way to test it was the way many regional drivers test their vehicles - seeing how far the car would travel using one tank of fuel. “For me the old argument of how far can you get travelling from Mount Gambier to Adelaide and back has been a long standing topic of conversation in Mount Gambier and having never done it before I decided the release of the new VF Commodore was the perfect time to conduct the experiment myself,” Bryce said. “I even added little extra to my challenge - by travelling as far as Glenelg and

then back to the city to add the rigours of city driving to the challenge as well.” Driving at between 105kph and 110kph on the open road between Mount Gambier and Adelaide and back, Bryce easily completed his challenge and also blew the majority of the guesstimates, as part of a StarFM promotion, right out of the water. “Most of the people who registered an estimate, guessed between 80 and 100 litres,” Bryce said. “In the end I used 62.19 litres from a tank that has a 71 litre capacity.” Bryce said it was important to him to travel at the speeds most motorists would travel on the commute between Mount Gambier and Adelaide, to make the challenge as close to real life as possible. “It would be quite easy I could have just driven at 90kms an hour and this would have conserved a whole lot more fuel,” Bryce said. “This wasn’t an option as I wanted to make this challenge as close to real life driving as possible - so sitting on or close to the speed limit was my
intention.” According to Google maps, Bryce’s road trip covered 886kms, and with the help of local multimedia company Fed Creative, he was able to document the trip, thanks to in-car cameras. “Basically I did a documentary so people could see exactly what went on,” Bryce said. The fuel efficiency challenge is just another way Bryce is looking to show the local community that the Australian car manufacturing industry does make fuel efficient vehicles and cars that boast all the bells and whistles of imported products. “The whole point of the exercise was to shake off the poor reputation that larger Aussie V6 sedans in general have,” he said. “The new VF Commodore is extremely frugal in fuel economy and usage.” Bryce also admits he enjoyed getting familiar with all the new voice activated features of the new fuel efficient VF as well. “The new VF is an amazing car not only
with all its technology under the bonnet but its looks and the way it feels and drives on the road,” he said. “This is the most exciting car to be launched at OGR

this year and I hope everyone gets behind the excitement of a car that is still built in Australia and that punches right up there with the best cars built on the world stage.”
