PURPOSE The purpose of this book is to educate the public on the true benefits of Sango ionic coral mineral complex. Since calcium makes up the largest percentage of the coral mineral complex (35%), when the term “coral calcium� is used throughout the book it needs to be understood that the authors are referring to the whole Sango coral mineral complex in general and to the mineral calcium in particular. It is not the authors’ intention to provide advice on the diagnosing, treatment, or curing of any specific disease or health condition. Nutritional supplementation does not heal or cure diseases or conditions. It simply supplies the nutritional ingredients to help your body heals itself! The body is like a computer that has 75 trillion working parts. Foreword I have been studying health intensively for the past forty-five years. I’ve had to. I was born sick and, despite the best medical and dental attention possible (I was born into a nest of dentists and doctors and always got the “best”), my health kept going from bad to worse. By the time I was twenty, I realized that if I didn’t do something about it myself, something radical, I was not going to live much longer. My family and peers didn’t like it one bit when I started looking into alternatives. They called me crazy and worse, and they have all long since died. But I am still here, still studying and still getting better, stronger, faster, more flexible every day. I feel great most of the time, tons of energy, leading an active, interesting and interested life. And I owe a lot of it to ionic coral minerals. I know first-hand what it’s like to be very sick, and I know what it’s like to be very healthy, I know the differences between the two states, and I know the factors that take us from the one health state to the other. Seven years ago, I was introduced to the ionic coral minerals by one of my more enlightened friends, and soon understood that I had found what I had been looking for my whole life, the missing link, the connection that put it all together: Minerals – the stuff of which we all are made – and in a form we could actually use very effectively. Oh, I knew about minerals before that all right. Preface Life is a series of diverging pathways. Some are long and tedious, while others appear convoluted and confusing. Some are dead ends. But, every once in a while you enter a pathway that proves to be exciting and life changing. My wife, Nancy, started me on this type of pathway when she introduced me to Sango Coral Calcium, a natural, God given product that, through the test of time, has proven its health giving properties. I have always enjoyed a high level of health. However, placing the Sango coral calcium in distilled water and then drinking it throughout the day produced a dramatic increase in my energy level. In addition, it produced a heightened clarity in my thought processes, promoted an all-over calming effect, and helped elevate me to what I now consider to be an optimum level of health. I have been involved in athletics as a participant, coach, and athletic trainer for most of my adult life. As an athletic trainer I continuously investigated ways which would enable athletes to increase their overall level of performance, to participate for longer periods of time without fatigue, and to shorten their recovery time. In an effort to realize these goals, I have tried some interesting and sometimes bizarre techniques, all of which met with varying degrees of success. However, none of them produced the results I was looking for until I incorporated Sango coral calcium into my athletes’ training regimen. The results were not only dramatic, but also very satisfying both to the participating athletes and to myself. Professionally, I have been teaching human anatomy and physiology to premedical students for many years. Although my students walked away with a practical and technically correct knowledge of health and bodily function, I have always had a deep down suspicion that the information I imparted to them pertaining to the body’s operational balance was somehow lacking a vital piece. After investigating and experiencing the results of Sango coral calcium consumption, I have concluded that the missing factor was the acid/alkaline or pH balance of the human body. The body continuously strives to stay in homeostatic balance so that all the systems of the body function correctly. But, because of lifestyle, disease, injury, or other factors such as physical and mental stress, the body becomes increasingly unbalanced. Eventually you reach a point where the body is using all of its energy just trying to stay alive by maintaining the most basic of bodily functions. It doesn’t have the time or the resources to adequately or effectively deal with physical injuries and pathogenic or degenerative diseases. Through years of research and practical application, I have come to realize that the easiest way to achieve homeostatic balance is to maintain the body at a slightly alkaline pH level (approximately 7.4 pH). This has proven to be where the body functions at an optimal level. It is where your metabolism operates efficiently, your energy level is the highest, and your immunity is the strongest. Theoretically, we should be able to maintain this optimal pH level through our diet. However, because of the pressures inclusive in today’s society and the diminished quality of food sources we have available, pH homeostasis within the body is difficult, if not impossible, to maintain by diet alone. My experience has proven that the most efficient way to optimize your health and maintain homeostatic

balance is to eliminate some of the most damaging aspects of the accepted American diet. This includes refined (white) flour and sugars, any form of carbonated soft drinks, and all forms of an aspartame artificial sweetener. In addition, the consumption of 2 liters of Sango coral calcium in distilled water each day will maximize your body’s ability to achieve and maintain homeostasis through pH balance. It is my hope that the information in this book will empower the reader with knowledge so that they will be able to make intelligent, informed decisions. In the summer of 1994, I received a call and was asked to come to Virginia to investigate information and effects of a new product. According to the reports this wonderful nutritional supplement had been used worldwide for many years, with the exception of the US, Canada and a few other countries, and was reporting tremendous health benefits in the young as well as the elderly. Needless to say, this was definitely enough to rouse my curiosity. My experience in the past with calcium supplements was certainly not this dramatic. In fact, most people have taken such inferior forms of calcium over the years; the interest of calcium as a major player in the role of nutrition was virtually non-existent. In other words, it had become a tough sell to the American public. I had no idea that by just adding a nutritional mineral supplement to my drinking water I could change my metabolic health forever. My wife and I bought our tickets and headed to Virginia. Little did we know, that this trip would help inspire the distribution of possibly the most important discovery in the world of Alternative Therapies and Nutraceutic Remedies. Upon our arrival in Virginia, we were hurried off immediately to receive our introduction to Sango Coral Calcium from Okinawa. We began testing the pH of everything that was liquid. We were using an electrical device called a Digital Microprocessor that measures pH and ORP (oxidation-reduction potential or free electrons.) It did not matter how acidic the fluid appeared to be,the Sango coral raised the pH dramatically every time. I was surprised how acidic the most common fluids that we drink everyday were registering. Water, wine, concentrated juices, and especially soft drinks, etc. I thought to myself, no wonder we are breaking down at the cellular level. What amazed me the most was every calcium product we tested, with the exception of the Sango Coral Calcium, failed to raise the pH level of any of the fluids more than a point or so. Fluids would increase from 7.0 to 8.5 or less when adding the traditional calcium supplement while the pH would jump from 7.0 to 11.75, in the same fluid, after adding the Sango Coral Calcium. When you consider that a single point is based on a graduating scale of 10x10 jumping from 8.0-11.0, equates to 10x10x10x10 or 10,000 times more acidic. Wow! After a few days of experimenting with the Sango Coral Calcium we were certainly convinced that we were experiencing something very special. We headed back to Amarillo, Texas, very excited, with the anticipation of sharing this awesome phenomenon with our clients and customers. In fact, we had already planned a very large health seminar that coming weekend. At the seminar, we introduced the Sango Coral Calcium, from Marine Bio, for the very first time on American soil. The response was fantastic! We had over 200 people purchase their first orders of Sango Coral Calcium, which meant that over 200 people, took the first step to maintaining their health at one gathering. Over the next 8 years the story of Sango Coral Calcium grew. Medical professionals, naturopathic health professionals, chiropractors, massage therapists, athletes, the very young, the very old, the very sick and the very healthy all took advantage of the Miracle of these Sango Coral Minerals. Chapter One

The Story Begins

Background Picture yourself in the early 16th century waking up one bright sunny morning and peering outside through the window of your castle tower. You are not feeling well so you send your young page down to the town square to the apothecary shop to fetch you some of the new wonder powder from the coral of the Japanese islands that is suppose to keep you healthy. The page searches the shelves filled with pots and jars scents of herbs, tinctures and spices until he finds the container he is seeking. The inscription on the container reads, “Coral Stone to Purify the Blood.� That apothecary shop still stands in the Spanish town of Panaranda de Duero.

As you can see, the miracle of Coral Calcium can be traced as far back as he 16th Century. This shop we speak about is the oldest documented pharmacy, built in 1792, and located in the northern Spanish town of Panaranda de Duero. The pharmacy, still standing, is now part of a museum. Recent research may have uncovered the health secrets of the six longest living cultures from around the world, where people are relatively free from disease and typically live a healthy life for over 100 years. The common characteristic in all these centenarian cultures, do include diet and exercise, but their unique water sources which contains huge amounts of ionic calcium along with other minerals may be a huge contributory factor.

The Beginning Dr. Hagglund goes on to describe how the depleted land gets re-fertilized (usually with synthetic chemicals) every year to produce green crops, but that a “green crop”, while necessary for production of good-looking, salable produce, doesn’t mean the produce contains sufficient minerals and trace minerals to keep us healthy. Senate document 264, 74th Congress, 2nd Session, states, “Our physical well-being is more directly dependent upon minerals we take into our systems than upon calories or vitamins.” The alarming fact is that foods (fruits, vegetables and grains) now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain minerals are starving us - no matter how much of them we eat. No man of today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the minerals he requires for perfect health...”. However, there are segments of the world’s population that live to an old age and die healthy. Although sounding like an oxymoron, barring accident, we are designed to live until the end of our personal biological clock and then die, not of disease or nutritionally derived degenerative conditions, but of deterioration of natural body function. In an article on longevity, Approaching Immortality, well known author Dr. Ronald Klatz points out that there are several cultures in the world with people who enjoy long productive lives. Those who live the longest and are the most productive include the Vilcabamas of the Andes of Ecuador, the Bilcabambas of the Andes of Peru, the Abkhasians of the eastern shores of the Black Sea in the Caucus Mountains, the Hunzas in the Himalayas in Asia, and the Okinawans of Okinawa, Japan. These people are all relatively free from diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, lupus, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, mental illness, etc. Typically, these people live a healthy life, often over 100 years. Although scattered around the world, these distinct cultures share several common factors that contribute to their health and longevity. These include lack of stress, plenty of sleep, hard physical work, diets high in complex carbohydrates (as opposed to simple sugars and white flour) but low in fat and meat, and unique water sources containing large amounts of ionic calcium and other minerals. The Vilcabambas, Bilcabambas, Abkhasians and Hunzas live at altitudes around 7000 feet. Living in high mountains indicate that they mostly get their water from melting glaciers. This means their crop growing soils are constantly being replenished with nutrients and minerals from floods and glacial melts. The soils of the Okinawans are replenished by the physical break down of mineral rich corals which make up their island. These people all drink from natural spring wells rich in minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. This type of water, which also provides water for their crops, is so white with minerals it is often called “the Milk of the Mountains” (or “Glacial Milk”). In Japan it is called “the Milk of the Ocean” or “Coral Milk”. In 1979, a British journalist from the GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS went to the island of Tokunoshima, north of Okinawa off the coast of Japan, to interview the world’s oldest documented living person. He found Mr. Izumi, 115 years old at the time, to be in exceptionally good health. This

centenarian, who finally died at the age of 122, had worked in the fields every day until he was 105. Furthermore, the journalist found out that just about all the inhabitants of the island lived to very old ages and were generally considered healthy. The inhabitants also had a low incidence of serious illness and degenerative disease.

Mr. Izumi is shown posing for pictures with children from around the world. In an article in the magazine Shukan Asahi, it was stated: “Japan is number 1 in longevity in the world. On the ‘Respect-for-the-Aged Day’, September 15th, 1995, the Ministry of Welfare announced a list of 18,000 names of people who were over 100 years of age. The number of centenarians in Okinawa was 4 times higher than the other areas of Japan.” A group of Japanese researchers from the Japanese Ministry of Public Health studied these islanders to find what they had in common to give them healthy long life’s. They found that the water they were drinking was different from the water consumed anywhere else in the world. The Okinawans’ water was full of ionic calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and other essential trace minerals derived from the Sango coral that makes up several of the islands of the Okinawa chain. Certain species of coral, such as those that make up Okinawa and in some sites in the Caribbean, contain Zooxanthellae or endozoic algae. This type of algae is especially efficient at removing inorganic minerals from the sea water and, through photosynthesis, converting them into ionic organic minerals. These organic minerals are stored in the matrix of the coral. When fresh rain water comes into contact with the coral, these stored organic minerals are leached out of the coral and begin to seep down into the water table leaving the ground water and the aquifers laden with ionic organic minerals. The Okinawans drink from this ground water and from the aquifers. It is thought this infusion of highly ionic mineralized water helps many of them to live long healthy productive lives. Drinking the water in this form has worked for the Okinawans for hundreds of years. We should be astute enough to incorporate this water into our own lives. NOTE: There are two forms of minerals, 1. inorganic, which can be found in any earth based substance (rocks, soil, water, etc.) and does not contain an electrical charge (positive or negative). 2. organic which does have an electrical charge and is considered to be “ionic”. Organic ionic minerals is the mineral form which is compatible with our body and necessary in our chemical and metabolic functions.

According to Professor Yoshino Yamauchi of the Aragonite Institute of Japan, “ “The ionization process of the coral minerals is 6 times greater, and is much greater in electrical conductivity than inorganic calcium such as calcite...It is capable of entering into an immediate chemical reaction whenever it is required by the body.” Ionic organic coral mineral supplements are available in capsules, powders and sachets (tea bags) which mimic the closest form available to the original coral minerals used by the Okinawan Centenarians.   Once the land coral was relieved of these organic minerals by rain and other elements the minerals began to seep down into the water table. This left the ground water rich in ionic and organic minerals. Remember the Okinawans, who lived over 120 years of age, drank water that had percolated through the raw fossilized Sango Coral that contained organic minerals that are algae based. Drinking the water in this form has worked for the Okinawans for hundreds of years. Sachets are the closest to the original form, used by the Okinawan Centenarians that is available today. Sango Coral is the only species of coral whose skeletal composition is nearly identical to that of the human skeleton. Because of this, the calcium and other minerals from Sango Coral are now being used for bone grafts by orthopedic surgeons throughout the world. Today there have been discoveries of sources of high quality mineral dense Sango coral in places off the coast of the Caribbean. This source of Sango coral is also highly recommended for human consumption and is a preferred source of Sango coral calcium by health experts today.

Chapter Two

What Does Calcium Do?

Analysis has determined that the Sango coral is made up of 74 ionic organic minerals. The largest concentration of minerals includes calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K) and sodium (Na). These are highly active biological minerals used by the cells and tissues to originate and maintain many of the body’s critical functions, not the least of which is to control the pH or acid/alkaline balance within the fluids of the body. The most powerful of these pH balancing minerals is calcium which has been referred to by some experts as the “King of the Bioelements.” The title of this book, The Mineral of Miracles, refers to calcium’s biological task of originating, managing, and maintaining over 170 metabolic body functions or chemical reactions as well as fulfilling its most important metabolic role, that of being the primary factor in regulating the pH acid/ alkaline homeostatic balance within the body. Therefore, calcium and its physiological functions will be the main focus of this book. An October 13, 1998 New York Times article states: “Calcium takes its place as a superstar of nutrients.” Calcium is universally recognized as one of the most important biological minerals. It represents 1.6% of the human body weight, which makes it the most abundant metallic element in the body. Calcium exists in several forms and compounds. However, not all of these are biologically absorbable or usable by the body. Why is it necessary to ingest this essential mineral in sufficient amounts and in correct ionic form to maintain our bodily functions, build or replace bone formation and maintain the correct pH acid/ alkaline balance in our cells, tissues, organs and fluids? Dr. Linus Pauling, who twice won the Nobel Prize, said, “Every disease is directly linked to a mineral deficiency.” Research also suggests that there are not enough minerals in the soil to support the health of our bodies. Even if most of our diet is from supposedly mineral-rich food like raw, organic, green leafy vegetables and whole foods, we still may not be able to consume enough calcium and

other minerals to prevent or overcome disease effectively because of the increase of toxins in our environment and the chemicals in our prepared packaged and fast foods. Minor symptoms like aches and pains, headaches, weight gain, leg cramps, forgetfulness, nervous tension, irritability, hormone imbalance, intestinal problems, etc., are often the first signs of mineral deficiencies. Since we do not have access to the same mineralized water that the Okinawan centenarians (and the other “long lived” cultures mentioned earlier) drink to maintain their health and longevity we need to take mineral supplements. Ionic calcium has three major responsibilities within the body. 1. It is the major component used by the body in metabolic or physical processes such as heart beat regulation, muscle contraction, nerve impulse origination and transmission, osmosis and diffusion and DNA replication. 2. Along with sodium, potassium and magnesium it buffers the acids created by metabolism and digestion by maintaining the correct pH level in body tissues. 3. In combination with phosphorus, magnesium and other elements, calcium builds and repairs bone, teeth and collagenous connective tissue (tendons and ligaments). Bone is made up of specialized cells and fiber embedded in a mineral matrix, which consists mostly of crystals of calcium phosphate. In one form of bone, which is referred to as calcified or solid bone, calcium is bound tightly within the bony matrix. In the other type, referred to as trabecular or spongy, the calcium is easily removed to maintain proper levels in the blood. Calcium is removed from the bone only when the more mobile stores located in the blood and tissues are exhausted and dietary intake is inadequate. The skeleton is a live tissue system. Bones are constantly being replaced and remodeled with 20% of an adult’s bone calcium reabsorbed and replaced every year. In 1985 biochemical researchers Carifoli and Pennistion found that a minute flux of calcium ions serves as the common trigger which precipitates biological events such as muscle contraction, including the heart muscle, and the release of neuro-transmitters which carry messages between nerve cells. Increasing ionic calcium intake may also normalize heart rhythm in arrhythmia suffers. Calcium interacts with sodium, potassium and magnesium to regulate blood pressure. It has been found that people whose diets are low in ionic calcium are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure. In addition, ionic calcium in the blood is an essential factor in initiating the blood clotting cascade. It activates vitamin K and the “clotting cascade” which is the first stage in wound healing. Researchers have found that supplemental ionic calcium can lessen the amount of cholesterol clogging your arteries. Harold Yacowitz, Ph.D., at Fairleigh Dickenson University on Madison, New Jersey, found that 1,600 mg. of total calcium a day lowered cholesterol by 48 points and triglycerides by 115 points. People given 2000 mg. of dietary calcium a day for a year saw their cholesterol drop 25%. Calcium is essential for the production and activity of many enzymes and hormones, which are involved in digestion, energy production, fat metabolism, and the production of saliva. Calcium is involved in the active transport of nutrients and other substances across cell membranes and aids in the maintenance of the connective tissue, which holds cells together. Calcium provides the cells with the capability of converting glucose into the four nucleotides for DNA replication, which is critical for cell repair. In 1986 biochemical researchers Moolnaar, Defize and

Delaat found that a rise in the concentration of calcium ions in the cell fluids was necessary for the function of DNA synthesis and cell division. Essentially, this means that calcium mineral deficiency inhibits natural growth and cell repair. Remember: Supplements do not heal the body. However, when the proper amounts of vitamins enzymes, and minerals, are provided: THE BODY HAS THE TOOLS TO HEAL ITSELF. Pierce Carson, in his book, What I would Do If I Had Cancer Again, and Dr. Theodore Baroody, in his book, Alkalize or Die, talk about a form of ionic biological organic calcium called Coral Calcium, that is highly biologically active. It is in a natural ionic state which makes it 99% bioavailable and highly absorbable by the tissues and fluids of the body. The differences in the methods of using ionic coral minerals. Abstracts from patent research information prove that the minerals in coral are, in part, an organic source of ionic minerals. When properly sanitized and processed it can impart to the body approximately 74 ionic trace minerals. There are three basic forms in which supplemental coral mineral products are available: 1. Sachets or “tea bags”. 2. Capsules 3. Powder All three forms of the coral minerals will provide ionic minerals for use by the body. However, the most absorbable and therefore the most preferred form of ingesting the coral minerals is when the sachet is added to distilled or purified water and then drank throughout the day. When added to pure water, mineral oxides are diffused from the sachet into the water. When the calcium oxide (CaO) mixes with the water (H2O), negatively charged hydroxide ions (OH-) are formed. This production of hydroxide ions is responsible for the pH increase of the water. Example: CaO + H2O  Ca++ + 2OH-. This equation could prove to be the dramatic answer to ionic calcium’s wonderful health benefits. This incredibly beneficial reaction is not found with conventional inorganic calcium supplements which have their base in calcium carbonate. The antioxidant (ORP) potential (the ability neutralize free radicals) is also higher using the sachet in pure water method. When the sachet is placed into the water billions of antioxidants are released greatly increasing the body’s ability to fight free radical damage. The power of antioxidants is measured in millivolts (mV) which is the electrical measurement used to determine the Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) of a product. The greater the reduction (or the more negative the reading … a -270 is better than a +270 reading) the more free radical fighting antioxidants are available and released. The ORP produced by the coral mineral sachets has a higher negative value than any other product tested. Electrical conductivity (impulses relayed through nerves), electrical tension (cells communicating with each other) and surface tension (the lower the surface tension of the water surrounding your cells the easier it is to transport nutrients into, and metabolic waste out of the cells) are all dramatically improved using the sachets rather than capsule or powder forms of coral minerals. If you choose the capsule or powder forms of coral minerals, you will not receive much of a pH or ORP benefit unless you add the product to water. If you do not mix the product with water then you

will not produce the negative OH ion. Drinking water with a couple of capsules or powder added to the water inhibits the amount of ions absorbed. The water will dilute the HCl (hydrochloric acid) in your stomach which is necessary to properly dissolve the capsule or powder and release the coral minerals. Once the capsule or powder is dissolved the minerals will mix with the diluted HCl, thereby lessening the amount of negative HO ions that can be produced and absorbed. Also, if you simply mix the ingredients of the capsules or powder with water it will release carbonate forms of the minerals into the water giving it a chalky appearance as well as skewing the pH value. The minerals needed to stimulate the carbonic acid – bicarbonate buffer system are still provided and you can still receive reduced pH balance benefits but at a lower absorption level. This is due to the fact that the capsules and powders have to go through a different manufacturing process that often creates a great deal of friction through grinding and pulverizing. This will alter and reduce the electron presence rendering the product less effective. The more processing it has to go through the less effective it becomes. Using the coral mineral sachet method will give you a much higher overall pH and health result. However, the coral mineral capsules and powders can be important in their own right. Although inferior to the sachets they have their place and uses. Any form of coral mineral product is vastly superior to other form of calcium supplement available on the market. Convenience is a factor that must be considered. Some people cannot, should not, or will not be able to drink the required liter per day of sachet produced coral mineral saturated water. For these people, popping a pill or mixing the powder is still better than nothing or lowering their standards to using over the counter supplements. The majority of available “over the counter” calcium and mineral supplements are nothing more than ground up rocks….inorganic minerals. You have a choice of products that contain inorganic calcium (dolomite, chalk, limestone), inorganic calcium bonded to an amino acid (chelated), inorganic colloidal calcium (calcium in distilled water) or organic calcium (raw milk products, mud made from plant or animal remains, oyster shell, coral deposits). Absorption rate statistics you should be aware of: • Inorganic absorption = 10% of original amount • Chelated absorption = 40% of original amount • Colloidal absorption = up to 88% • Organic absorption (depending on processing) up to 100% If you are extremely mineral deficient then you should consider using a coral mineral powder or capsule along with the sachets so that you can achieve the maximum benefit the coral minerals have to offer. The best coral mineral sachets, capsules or powders to use should contain 35% ionic calcium, have a ratio of 2:1 calcium to magnesium and contain no ingredients in the product other than the coral minerals, vitamin D3 and possibly ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Any added vitamins, minerals enzymes, etc. will only throw off the natural balance of this health changing product making it less effective. Reputable manufactures clean and process their coral products so that it contains no bacteria, molds, organic debris, and only minute trace amounts of toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury cadmium and arsenic (yes, the body does need minute amounts of these toxic minerals). Unfortunately, not all manufacturers of coral minerals are reputable.

It is stated that “Coral Calcium” is actually a composite of 74 different minerals, of which calcium is the largest component. The percentages of the minerals contained in the Sango coral products may be determined the source of the Sango coral used. * Minerals on chemical analysis chart measured in ppm (parts per million). The term “Coral Calcium” should be used to describe a complex of ionic minerals not just a calcium supplement. The type of calcium normally recommended for supplementation is usually from a non-biological source and is not in ionic form. It has been shown that these types of calcium are difficult for the body to digest, ionize, and absorb, especially as a person becomes older and the need for calcium increases. Calcium’s Role Within The Body

Calcium forms 3.4% of the earth’s crust and is the fifth most abundant mineral in nature. Calcium occurs in the carbonate form as limestone, in the sulfate form as gypsum, in the phosphate form as apatite, and the biological carbonate form as oyster shell, dolomite or coral deposits. Chemically, calcium is one of the alkaline earth elements. Its oxidates react with water to form hydroxides that are alkaline, which means they have a pH greater than 7.0. Calcium has little affinity for electrons and easily gives up its own, especially to oxygen, making it one of the most effective free radical fighting antioxidants in nature. The Octet Rule In general, atoms are most stable when they have 8 electrons in their outer-most shell. The exception is the first shell, which is most stable with TWO electrons. We will be dealing with only the first four shells in this presentation since calcium contains only four orbital shells in it’s ground state configuration. Calcium is the most abundant metallic mineral in the human body. An adult body typically contains 1-2 kg (2.2 - 4.4 lbs) of calcium, with 99 percent of it occurring in the bones and teeth. Biological elements must be able to not only attract and transport other nutrients but also to release them when and where they are required by the body. Calcium is the one element that has the chemical flexibility to be the body’s most biologically active mineral nutrient transporter. Calcium is the key biological regulatory ion. It regulates the body’s as well as both the cell membrane’s voltage and channel openings that allow the nutrients into the cell and metabolic waste to pass out. It is also a biochemical catalyst producing the four DNA code building blocks from glucose that are necessary for cell reproduction. The most common forms of calcium supplements contain calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium malate, calcium gluconate, calcium phosphate, calcium lactate or calcium sulfate. Total calcium intake from both diet and supplements should total at least 1,200 mg and can safely be as high as 2,500 mg per day. When calcium supplements are taken in the ionic form, such as ionic coral minerals, the need for large amounts of daily calcium may be reduced because of the higher absorption rate of ionic minerals. For instance, theoretically, if a person needs 150 mg per day of ionic calcium per day, it is recommended that he take 1500 mg of calcium supplement because the absorption rate of inorganic calcium is approximately 2-10% of the original amount (10% of 1,500 mg is 150 mg). Since ionic organic calcium is absorbed at a 90–100% rate of what is taken that person would only need to take in approximately 200 mg. (90% of 200 mg = 180 mg). We should be able to get our daily quota of organic minerals from the foods we eat. When you eat a diet rich in organic calcium (green leafy vegetables have the highest calcium content and absorbability…even more than milk) the body will use the calcium to neutralize the excess acids caused by eating protein (amino acids) and other acidic foods and drinks. Coral mineral calcium has been found to be a great alkalizing agent. In fact, it is probably the most efficient alkalizing agent available. Wheat grass juice, long held to be the number one alkalizing agent, is a distant second to the ionic calcium in the coral minerals. Coral calcium keeps the blood and intercellular fluid alkaline, even though the body’s metabolism is constantly producing copious amounts of acid. Experts tell us that maintaining the body’s pH level at 7.0 or above should easily neutralize deposited metabolic acids and guarantee a rich supply of cellular oxygen. “Alkalinity equals oxygen and oxygen equals good health.” Coral calcium may also be of benefit in the treatment of allergy complaints, depression, insomnia, panic attacks, arthritis, hypoglycemia, and muscle and joint pain. It may also be of significant value in controlling leg cramping, menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome. Coral minerals are an excellent source of natural ionic organic minerals, primarily calcium. This high organic mineral content is due to the Zooxanthellae or endozioc algae present in its body. This algae removes inorganic minerals from the ocean and, in combination with the photosynthetic process, creates organic ionic minerals which are stored in the skeleton matrix of the coral for use as building blocks to help the coral grow. Coral is naturally porous—it’s full of microscopic holes. Even the smallest grains of powdered coral retain this porous quality. What does this mean?

Single mineral intake can create an imbalance in the body. Minerals tend to react with one another to create a reciprocal and harmonious electrochemical balance in the body if the correct proportion of minerals is maintained. The coral minerals provide a uniquely balanced core of necessary trace minerals whose composition is almost identical to human bone in content and proportions. It has been found by Swedish scientists to be nearly 100% absorbable because it is in the ionic form. It is claimed to be absorbed in only 10 to 20 minutes, not the normal 10 to 20 hours for absorption of minerals in their inorganic nonionic elemental form. Note: Oxalic acid, which is found in spinach, rhubarb, chard, and beet greens, is often said to bind with calcium and reduce absorption. These foods may not be considered the best source of calcium. Calcium in other green vegetables, like kale, collard greens, Chinese mustard greens, and Chinese cabbage flower leaves is well absorbed.

Calcium can be used to control the incidence of leg cramps in pregnant women. It has also been shown to reduce the amount and severity of menstrual cramps and symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome. Calcium may be of benefit in the treatment of allergy complaints, for depression, insomnia, panic attacks, arthritis, hypoglycemia, and muscle and joint pains. Scientists tell us that the increase of body fluid pH to 7.1 should easily neutralize deposited body acids and guarantee a rich supply of cellular oxygen. In addition, uric acid dissolves in an alkaline solution of 7.1-7.4 and kidney stones dissolve in an alkaline solution of 7.0-7.4. Calcium, as one of the four alkaline elements, keeps the blood or intercellular fluid alkaline even though the body metabolism produces lots of acid. Cell vitality and resistance to bacteria is further increased when alkalinity is achieved by the use of ionic calcium. Experts agree that dehydration and mineral deficiencies, particularly the minerals calcium, magnesium, chromium and vanadium, may have a significant impact blood glucose levels.

Chapter Four

How Does It Work?

Calcium’s involvement in cell nutrition is threefold: 1. Calcium-bound proteins regulate both the size and the opening and closing of the ion channels of the membrane of every cell. There by allowing the osmotic transfer of nutrients and metabolic wastes. 2. The calcium ion, substantially more than any other ion, has the capability of attaching itself to a large number of nutrient radicals, which are molecularly stacked on the outer surface of the cell membrane. When these “stacks” become electrically detached, the calcium ion is then capable of transporting them through the cell ion channel into the cell, thereby delivering a large amount of nutrients for the healthy function of the cell. 3. Calcium combines with the phosphates in extracellular and intracellular fluids to regulate osmotic pressures and transference through membranes. In the book, The Role of Calcium in the Biological System, biochemical researchers state that the calcium ion triggers life: “Upon fertilization of the human egg by a sperm, two ion fluxes occur. The first is an initial surge of calcium ions. The second is an influx of hydrogen resulting in the net alkalization (raising the pH) of the fluid within the egg, which is necessary to initiate DNA synthesis, cell division and to create the slightly alkaline, buffered, and oixygen-rich medium necessary to sustain life.” Could calcium deficiency be a cause of infertility? Calcium, in order to be a suitable mineral in the metabolic process of the body, must be in the ionic state. It is only in this ionic form that calcium is bio-available and bio-absorbable. “Ionic” means a mineral has obtained a positive or negative electrical charge through electron exchange with another mineral. The process of changing elemental inorganic calcium into ionic calcium requires the inorganic calcium to go through the digestive process. During digestion, hydrochloric acid is produced in the stomach mucosa cells, creating a gastric chyme mixture whose contents range from a pH 1.0 to a pH of 3.0. The hydrochloric acid is a very effective way of ionizing the digested food nutrients, including metallic minerals such as calcium. Calcium that has been ionized by stomach acid must be absorbed through

the villi of the intestine. It must then be activated by of vitamin D in order to be transferred into the blood stream. In a 1992 French study of 1,765 women over the age of 69, those who were given supplements containing 1200 mg. of calcium and 20 mcg. of vitamin D had an average increase of 2.7% in bone mass in the hips and thighs after 18 months. This is a significant increase. Women taking a placebo suffered a 4.6% loss in bone mass. Over the same period, the women taking the calcium and vitamin D supplements had 43% fewer hip fractured than the control group. Vitamin D and Calcium are Necessary for “Cell Feeding”. Vitamin D3 is necessary for the body to create calcitriol. Calcitriol is necessary for calcium and phosphate ions to be absorbed from the small intestine into the blood and then transported to the interstitial fluid surrounding the cells. This calcium transportation is accomlished by way of specific calcium-binding protein receptors that are stimulated by vitamin D. When the vitamin D receptors are full (at 5,000 IU) 20 times more calcium is absorbed than when the receptors are less than full. When calcium and proteins attach to the receptor sites on teh membrane of a cell it increases the voltage differential between the outside and inside of the cell membrane which creates an opening in the membrane allowing calcium ions and the nutrients that are attached (stacked) to them to enter the cell. Note: A solution with a pH of less than 7.0 is positive (acidic), whereas a solution with a pH greater than 7.0 is negative (alkaline). With the extracellular (outside the cell) fluid negative and the intercellular (inside the cell) fluid positive, the voltage differential is built up to the required 70 millivolts. The 70 millivolts are created in the healthy cell when the external membrane pH is a negative 7.4 and internal membrane pH is a positive 6.6. This voltage difference exerts a pull at each end of the receptor that is blocking the channel, causing it to stretch, opening up the channel for the passage of the calcium ion with its nutrients attached. When inside the cell, the calcium ion breaks off from the nutrients and leaves the cell through smaller ion channels that are opened by the voltage differential buildup. Once the negatively charged nutrient ions, such as glucose, have entered the cell, and the positive calcium ion has exited, the original pH condition is restored and the cycle is ready to start this “cell feeding” process all over again. However, when the cell is unhealthy and has an external fluid pH below 7.0 making it acidic (positive) things change. Let’s say the external fluid is in the 6.5 range, the 70 millivolt differential can still be produced to cause the rosettes to uncoil to allow the nutrients in to nourish the cell, but, the body must do this by the emergency action of forcing the internal pH of the cell to a more acidic (positive) level. A level of, say 6.2. Although the stacked nutrients will still be transported into the cell, the increased internal acidity will soon cause the cell to reach a self-destructive condition. This continued acidic state of a cell tends to break down the cell membrane releasing the large ions into the fluid surrounding the cell, consequently increasing the cell’s internal acidification. When the acid levels inside the cell reach a low enough pH, the internal structures of the cell and the DNA are damaged leading to improper function, and destruction or possible mutation.

Chapter Five

The Rise and Fall of Calcium

Calcium ion concentration is regulated by several biological factors. They are: 1. Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium and deposit it in the bones. 2. Calcitonin, which enhances the ability of the bones to store calcium by transferring calcium from the blood to the bones and inhibiting its release. 3. Parathyroid hormone, which regulates the transfer of calcium from the bones to the blood. 4. Estrogens, which help retain calcium in the bones. 5. Absorption in the intestinal tract. 6. Excretion by the kidneys and skin. Once ionized, it is thought that the ionic coral calcium is absorbed into the blood serum in two ways. One way is through microbiotic transference. This unproven theory proposes there are 4 microbes in coral calcium, which latch onto the nutrients and zip the calcium through the intestine to the liver. This theory may be dispelled due to the cleaning and desalting process of the Coal. To remove salt, heavy metals and other impurities the Coral must be heated to a temperature that would kill out most microbes or other organisms. Another method of absorption, described by Dr. Edward Howell, is by direct absorption through the stomach mucosa lining. “In primates and man the stomach has two parts with separate functions. The upper part is where the enzymes in food, or enzymes taken with the food, participate in digestion.� It is possible that certain nutrients are absorbed through the stomach mucosa of the upper portion of the stomach. The stomach carries on a limited amount of absorption of water, alcohol, aspirin, and some colloidal or ionic materials such as the coral calcium minerals. These absorbed materials go directly into the blood stream and into the hepatic/portal system of the liver. This may account for the rapid appearance of ionic coral calcium and other minerals in the blood serum after ingestion. If the level of free calcium in the blood lowers to 10 mg per ml of blood, bones release calcium to increase the level of free calcium in the blood. Above 10-11 mg per ml, bones absorb the excess and store it in its matrix. If any of the released calcium is not needed and not reabsorbed, it is excreted in the urine by the kidneys.

Calcium ion balance is particularly important to the membranes and intracellular activities of the neurons and muscle cells, especially those of the cardiac muscle. If the calcium concentration in the body fluids increases by 30% above normal (hypercalcemia), nerve neurons and muscle cells become relatively unresponsive. When calcium levels decrease by 35% the neurons become so excitable that convulsions can occur. A 50% reduction in blood calcium concentration (hypocalcemia) usually results in muscle spasms, weak heartbeat, cardiac arrhythmias, osteoporosis and even death. Bone tissue is mostly composed of calcium. As the bone tissue ages it slowly undergoes changes that render the bone less flexible, not as dense and structurally weaker and more fragile. The calcium in the bone can also change into a crystal form called calcium apatite which can be very brittle and easily broken. Therefore, the body must reform and regenerate its bone tissue if it is to remain healthy. Bones are living tissue. Through an entirely natural process of osteo tissue (bone) break down and remodeling, large bones are replaced every 12-14 years, whereas small bones are replaced every 4.5 years. Live cells in the bone matrix, osteoclasts and osteoblasts, perform the routine maintenance of the bone. Osteoclasts remove old brittle bone in a process called reabsorption. In this process the old bone is broken down into its elemental parts (minerals, chemicals, etc.) and released into the blood where most of it, especially the minerals are recycled or used in metabolic functions. Osteoblasts remove fresh minerals, and other materials from the blood to replace the old bone tissue removed by the osteoclasts with new strong flexible bone tissue in a process called replacement. Bone tissue can also be encouraged to increase its density (thickness). In this process muscles must place extra stress on the bone by contracting more strongly, more often and for longer periods of time than normal. This is what takes place when you begin to exercise, especially lifting weights, or do something new that is physically demanding over a long period of time. When the muscles place more stress on bones, the osteoblast cells are stimulated to lay down additional bone matrix (trabeculae) in concentric rings (like growth rings in a tree) and then fill those rings with minerals creating new and therefore thicker and stronger bones (increased density). Doctors often prescribe pharmaceutical drugs to stop or reduce bone loss such as in the case of osteopenia and osteoporosis. These drugs work by preventing the osteoclasts from doing their job. This can give the bones a false sense of strength and the person a false sense of security. When calcium ion concentrations in the body fluids fall below normal, cells of the parathyroid gland release parathyroid hormone (PTH) into the blood stream. Parathyroid hormone has three major effects: 1. Stimulating osteoclast activity and enhancing the recycling of minerals by osteocytes, thus creating bone remodeling and calcium release into the blood. 2. Increasing the rate of intestinal absorption of calcium ions by enhancing the action of calcitrol, causing more calcium to enter the blood through the digestive process. 3. Decreasing the rate of excretion of calcium ions by the kidneys, thereby stopping the calcium from being excreted in the urine.

The net result is that more calcium ions enter the body fluids, loss of calcium is reduced, and calcium ions in the fluid return to normal levels. If the calcium ion concentration in the blood rises above normal, the thyroid gland secretes calcitonin. Calcitonin has two major functions: 1. Inhibiting osteoclast activity and reabsorption from the cells, stopping the release of calcium from the bones and the cells. 2. Increasing the rate of excretion of calcium ions, thereby increasing the amount of calcium filtered from the blood by the kidneys and passed out of the body in the urine. The net result is a decline in the calcium ion concentration in body fluids restoring homeostasis. The skeleton provides a calcium ion reserve and serves as the primary source of normal calcium ion concentrations in the body fluids. When large amounts of calcium ions are released from the bones into the fluids, the bones become weaker and softer. When positive calcium ions combine with other ions, such as lactates from milk or malates from apples, calcium lactate and calcium malate are formed. These forms of calcium are extremely soluble and remain ionized within the body, providing the body with a calcium reserve. A body with a calcium reserve can use that reserve to buffer acidosis, thereby balancing the pH within the body without needing to draw calcium from the bones. Inactivity, such as bed rest, can cause bone loss in the lumbar spine and hipbones of almost one percent per week. The bone loss is mostly from the trabecular or spongy type of bone. In a double blind study in which no exercise was included, Dr. Guy Abraham of Torrance, California, gave one postmenopausal group of women nutritional supplements containing 500 mg of calcium and 500 mg of magnesium. The other group was given nutritional counseling but no supplements. The women who received the calcium and magnesium supplements not only halted bone loss but showed an 11% gain in their trabecular bone mass. This and other studies seem to indicate that with the proper ionic mineral supplementation and weight bearing exercise, osteopenia and osteoporosis (loss of bone mass and bone minerals) can be reversed.

Calcium and The pH Factor (Alkalinity and Acidity in the Body)

Dr. Theodore Baroody, in Alkalize or Die, says: “pH is the measurement of electrical resistance between negative and positive ions in the body. In other words, pH measures how much the negative ions (alkaline-forming) and positive ions (acid-forming) push against one another.” The term, pH therefore, refers to the concentration of negative hydrogen ions and its activity level in fluids. Maintaining the pH balance in the tissues, organs, and fluids is the main homeostatic function of the metabolic mineral buffers of the body. The main buffer used to control the pH (sometimes referred to as acid/alkaline) balance is ionic calcium. In The Anti-Aging Diet, Sam Graci states: “There are 10 areas of pH adjustment in the body, including saliva, blood, urine, liver, stomach, heart, spleen, brain, tears and interstitial fluid. The body is alkaline by design, but it is acidic by function.” In Better Bones, Better Body, Suzanne Brown states: “Many organs and systems, especially the kidneys, adrenals, and lungs, play important roles in maintaining pH.” Every second many bioelectrical reactions occur within the body as it continually attempts to maintain its pH balance. Natural health experts agree that except for the (protein digesting) fluids in the stomach and the fluids leaving the body through the kidneys and the colon, all of the body’s fluids should be alkaline. They are not supposed to be acidic. The pH scale, which goes from 0 to 14, begins in the middle with the number 7.0 or pH of neutral. This means there is an equal balance between the number of positive (acid producing) hydrogen ions and negative (alkaline producing) hydroxide ions. A pH reading between 7.0 and 0 is considered acidic, and a pH reading between 7.0 and 14 is considered alkaline.

In reading a pH value, it must be remembered that pH is a logarithmic measurement. Each change of one unit on the pH scale represents a ten-fold difference at the next level, either above or below. Therefore, a reading on the pH scale of 6.0 is ten times more acidic than a reading of 7.0 (neutral). A reading of 5.0 would be 10 X 10 or 1,000 times more acidic than a reading of 7.0.

Many people today have an overly acidic body pH due to drinking soft drinks, unhealthy food choices, improper combining of food types, consumption of processed and “fast” foods, stress and environmental pollution. Creating and maintaining an alkaline instead of an acidic environment within your body is one of the major deterrents to tissue damage, aging and the growth of disease organisms. Only when your body maintains a neutral to alkaline environment can it then use its amazing ability to heal itself. The ionic minerals, specifically calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium present in the coral mineral complex, provide the body with the alkalizing tools need to maintain an alkaline pH. Arthur C. Gyton, M.D., probably the most recognized author on human physiology, states in his Textbook of Medical Physiology, a text book used in educating medical students: “The first step in maintaining health is to alkalize the body. This is one of the most important aspects of Homeostasis. Changes in pH alter virtually all body functions.” Dr. Guyton also states: “The cells of a healthy body are alkaline, while the cells of a diseased body are below a pH of 7.0. The more acidic the cell, the sicker we become. If the body cannot alkalize the cells, they will become acidic, and thus disease sets in. Most cells will die in the 3.5 pH range. Our bodies produce acid as a bi-product of normal metabolism. Since our bodies do not manufacture alkalinity, we must supply the alkalinity from an outside nutritional source to keep us from becoming acidic and dying.” Reminder: pH measures how acidic or alkaline a mixture or solution is. Most drinking water has a pH around 7.0 or lower. The calcium in the coral mineral complex has the ability to raise the pH of distilled water from 7.0 to 10.5 or above, which represents a logarithmic jump making the water almost 10,000 times more alkaline than the water without the coral minerals. Note: These incredible alkalizing numbers are achieved using ionic organic coral minerals with no vitamins or other additives. Coral products which add vitamins, minerals, etc. do not produce this level of results. Why is it that our bodies operate so well in an alkaline environment? One explanation could be due to enzymes. Most people think that enzymes are just for digesting foods. Actually, the enzymes that are responsible for digesting foods are designed to function well in an acidic environment. But the thousands of “metabolic� enzymes that are responsible for creating or running the functions of the body are different. They are designed to operate in a pH environment different from digestive enzymes. Life itself is regulated by catalysts. Catalytic reaction within the body is controlled by enzymes. Most enzymes have a pH optimum that usually ranges between a pH of 6.0 and 8.0. Those enzymes not designed for digestion but for metabolic processes are unique and are designed to function in a mostly alkaline pH environment.

Outside their optimum pH range, enzymes quickly become denatured and ineffective, which causes many of the necessary chemical reactions within the body to not take place or to take place incorrectly, and the body degenerates into sickness. Carbonic anhydrase is one of the many enzymes that has a pH optimum of around 7.2. This is a very important enzyme. One carbonic anhydrase enzyme molecule can catalyze (change) 36 million carbonic acid (HCO3) molecules into carbon dioxide (CO2). Without the carbonic anhydrase enzyme reaction, the carbonic acid would build up in the blood, the blood would become acidic and unable to carry oxygen to the cells of the body ultimately leading to acidosis and death. The blood must maintain an alkaline pH of 7.35 to 7.45 or it will not be able to retain optimal oxygen for transport to our 76 trillion cells. To prevent the buildup of acid in the blood, consequently lowering the pH, the body must pull ionic calcium from the bones to alkalize the blood and fluids of the body to prevent acidosis. How often the acidosis condition is created and the longer the acidosis condition persists determines the ability of the body and immune system to resist disease and degenerative conditions. It is believed that one of the leading causes of osteoporosis today is rooted in all the sodas we drink and the stress to which we are exposed. Sodas, especially colas, contain large amounts of malic acid, citric acid, phosphoric acid and carbonic acid, hence the term “carbonated beverage.� The presence of these acids in the blood and other body fluids causes the body to deplete the bones of calcium in order to neutralize the acid and remain alkaline. Body fluids are alkaline by nature and, therefore, negatively charged. The negative charge of the fluids is offset through the activity of the entering positively charged (acid-forming) ions (cations). When this happens, the body has to produce or digestively consume and absorb more negatively hydroxide ions (anions) to return the fluid to a negative charge (alkaline state). Due to environmental, lifestyle, stress and digestive factors, our body generates, absorbs and accumulates acids and toxins throughout the day. Some experts postulate that it takes up to 30 glasses of alkaline water at a pH of 9.0 or higher to neutralize the detrimental effects of one carbonated beverage equal in size to just one of the glasses of water. When carbohydrates, proteins and fats are metabolized, they produce inorganic and organic acids. Proteins produce sulfuric acid, uric acid and phosphoric acid. Carbohydrates and fats produce acetic acid, fatty acid, pyruvic acid, lactic acid and ketones. As we sleep, the body releases buffering minerals, calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium from its alkaline reserves, mostly from the bones. These buffers begin neutralizing the accumulated acids and toxins, which are being carried in the blood and stored in the tissues (mostly fat tissue) of the body. The neutralized acids and detoxified toxins are then eliminated by the body in the urine, feces and sweat. At least that is the way the body is designed to work. When you have an acidosis condition, the calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium reserve is depleted and trouble begins. When an already severely depleted body becomes or remains acidic, the kidneys cause the liver to release ammonia, a digestive by-product of protein digestion. The kidneys trap the ammonia in their tubules and change it into ammonium. The ammonium, with an alkaline pH of 10+, is released into the blood to try to alkalize the highly acidic blood and body tissues. The kidneys then remove the ammonium from the blood and secrete it in the urine. When you smell ammonia in the urine, the body is in serious pH trouble.

ALKALINITY EQUALS OXYGEN AND GOOD HEALTH, ACIDOSIS EQUALS LOW OXYGEN AND DISEASE. DR. MICHAEL CUTLER, M.D., in The Journal of Body Chemistry Sciences, states, “High acid levels in your body are the root cause of many of today’s most frustrating, painful, and dangerous health problems.” Dr. F. M. Eugene Blass, in Nature Cure and Oxidative therapies. “The recognizable results of an insufficient oxidation either because of a lack of minerals or oxygen... are the symptoms which bear the imposing nomenclature of modern “dis-ease”. “OXIDATION is the source of Life, It’s lack causes impaired health or disease, it’s cessation death.” Dr. Blass’s research is in direct support of Dr. Otto Warburg’s Nobel Prize findings that cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenized environment. In The Role of Calcium in Biological Systems, Volume I, 1985, it reports, “Calcium deficiency is the universal property of all cancer cells.” Essentially, acidity forces oxygen out of body fluids. Many common ailments can be linked to a high acidic pH, usually caused by a deficiency of the alkalizing mineral ionic calcium. Cell vitality and resistance to bacteria and other disease causing pathogens is increased when the body achieves pH balance. Uric acid crystals dissolve in an alkaline solution of 7.1 - 7.4. Kidney stones dissolve in an alkaline solution of 7.0 – 7.4. A main cause of fatigue is increased acidity in the blood with a corresponding loss of oxygen. Many natural health practitioners are beginning to agree that our metabolic, enzymatic, immunologic and repair mechanisms all function best in an alkaline environment. Scientists tell us that the increase of body fluid pH to 7.1 should easily neutralize deposited body acids and guarantee a rich supply of cellular oxygen. Most children and healthy adults maintain an overall pH level above 7.0. However, much of the adult population and some children have minor health problems which reflect calcium deficiency due to lifestyle, metabolic defects or aging. These people usually register a pH of 6.5 or lower. Adults and children with major healthy problems register a pH of 5.0 to 6.0. Cancer patients usually have a pH level of 4.5 to 5.0. Remember, cells die when the pH reaches 3.5.

Bone contains a large reservoir of alkaline minerals, mainly calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium. When our internal pH turns acidic, these minerals are mobilized from bone to neutralize the excess acid. All acids are poisonous to cells and tissues. Optimally, we should start the day in an alkaline condition and then maintain that balance throughout the day. Unfortunately, even if we were to start the day alkaline, if we are leading a life that by today’s standards is normal, we would be subject to stress, diet and other acid producing influences. We have to eliminate accumulated acids from our bodies as quickly as possible. Neutralized acids can be safely eliminated by the kidneys and other excretory functions. But if the neutralizing buffers are used up, they must be replaced. Prolonged and repeated utilization of alkaline minerals for acid neutralization can deplete bone and contribute to osteoporosis. Those people with a more acidic body condition waste their mineral reserves constantly trying to keep their pH balanced. Dr. Sebastian, at the University of California in San Francisco, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that post-menopausal women in the United States generally exhibit an acidic body state rather than a slightly alkaline state. He speculated that a lifetime of withdrawing alkaline minerals from bone to neutralize this acidic condition would contribute to decreases in bone mass. This bone loss, he suggested, could be reduced and bone reformation enhanced by neutralizing these acids which could result in a retention of the body’s alkaline minerals. Subsequent research supports Dr. Sebastian’s speculations. Women consuming the standard American diet were given alkalizing supplements in the form of calcium carbonate and potassium bicarbonate. These alkalizing agents neutralized internal acid production, which led to a decrease in calcium and phosphorus excretion from bone tissue. This stimulated new bone formation. The women gradually returned to a normal alkaline state, which reduced the loss of bone-building minerals while enhancing bone health. When waste acids are not eliminated, they are reabsorbed from the colon into the liver and put into the circulatory system. They are then deposited in the tissues, mainly adipose (fat) tissue. It is these tissue acid residues that influence the degree of a person’s level of sickness or health. By remaining acidic, you run the risk of developing any number of degenerative disease conditions. By alkalizing yourself, you can rid the body of these debilitating acids. Natural health author, Carson Pierce states, “Research has taught me that the first thought of any doctor who treats any kind of disease should be, what is the pH of this patient?” Pierce goes on to mention that the best source of ionic calcium he has found to balance pH, is a product that is produced from coral found in Okinawa, Japan, and in the Caribbean.

The Cause and Effect of Calcium Deficiency

Studies centered on the American diet showed that it is deficient in many of the necessary nutrients, especially minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Scientists point out that ionic calcium is the most deficient mineral in the American diet. Getting enough calcium early in life is vital for bones to reach their maximum density so that they are strong enough to support the body even when they lose density later in life. Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), is an arbitrary nutritional value for the suggested quantity of consumption of a given nutrient. An interesting note is that the RDA is based on the amount of a nutrient necessary to keep a body from getting sick, not necessarily the amount of the nutrient necessary for staying healthy. Forty-two percent of our total population, particularly girls and females older than 11, consume less than 70% of the RDA for calcium. One out of four women consumes less than 200 mg of calcium on a typical day. “Thirty percent of all school children consume less than two-thirds the RDA”, says Susan Brown in Better Bones, Better Body. It is postulated that an intake of only 450 mg of calcium daily (RDA = 800-1200) would result in a net loss of 1.5% of bone per year. Professor Sang Wang, in his book Reverse Aging, says, “When you have no calcium reserve, calcium has to be taken from the bone structure itself, usually first from the spine and pelvic bones. From 10 to 40% of the normal amount of calcium may be withdrawn from mature bones before the deficiency will show up on X-ray.” Every year almost one-fifth of the adult skeleton is demolished to provide ionic calcium for body functions. This means that each day 360-mg or more of calcium are dissolved from the bone and deposited in the blood. If there is sufficient intake of calcium, the body rebuilds or replaces the lost bone tissue. If not, then bone deterioration and degenerative conditions develop. Dietary factors are the main result of calcium deficiency.

In Better Bones, Better Body, Suzanne Brown suggests that in the process of metabolizing protein, phosphoric and sulfuric acids are produced which must first be buffered with calcium, before it can be excreted in the urine. Calcium is drawn out of the bones to reduce or buffer these by-products of protein metabolism. If protein intake is high and calcium intake is low or even moderate, calcium may not be absorbed resulting in a net loss of calcium from bones and teeth. If there is insufficient calcium stored within the cells, then the parathyroid hormone, stimulated by the deficiency of Vitamin D, induces the extraction of calcium from the bones. With bones severely weakened by this calcium depletion, the body begins to extract its ionic calcium from the proteins whose job is to regulate cell functions. The resulting dysfunctions manifest themselves with a whole host of symptoms and diseases identified as the ionic calcium deficiency syndrome and diseases, but most doctors know them only as chronic disease of unknown or obscure origin. A US News and World Report article states: “Calcium plays a major role in warding off major illnesses.” Signs of severe calcium deficiency include abnormal heartbeat, muscle pains and cramps, numbness, stiffness and tingling of the hands and feet, and dementia. Children can suffer from rickets, slowness in sitting, crawling, and walking, insomnia, and bowed legs. In adults deficiency can lead to osteomalacia with symptoms of bone pain, muscle weakness, and delayed healing of fractures. It is estimated that there are over 150 chronic or degenerative diseases that owe their origin or continuance to calcium deficiency. Osteoporosis is the result of calcium deficiency and, in some cases, can be so severe as to cause the bones to break under the weight of the body. Bones that are particularly affected include the spinal vertebrae, the thigh¬bone, and the radius. High protein diets, carbonated beverages, poor absorption in the colon, our acidic environment, and stress are all contributing factors to developing osteoporosis.

Calcium deficiency can also lead to periodontal disease. Those at risk of calcium deficiency include the elderly, people who don’t eat dairy products, those on a high protein or high fiber diet, and those who drink a lot of alcohol. Pregnant women whose diets are deficient in calcium are at the greatest risk for muscle cramps.

When liquid cholesterol and proteins in bile begin to solidify because of an acidic condition, crystals begin to form in the gall bladder and kidneys. These crystals will then begin to build up over time and form stones. The medical community now tells us that these stones develop not because there is too much calcium in the system but because there is not enough of the right kind. Note: Ionic calcium does not cause kidney stones it is the buildup of inorganic calcium which contributes to their formation. Women who smoke, do very little physical activity, and do not exercise have a high percentage of calcium deficiency and osteoporosis. Also, frequent dieting can deplete calcium, as can drinking soft drinks, especially those high in phosphorus (colas). Alcohol, caffeine consumption and high sugar intake inhibit the absorption and increase the excretion of calcium and other important minerals in the urine. Athletes hit the anaerobic wall (run out of oxygen for metabolism) early when their blood is acidic because less oxygen is being delivered to the cells. Lactic and pyruvic acid build-up in cells from anaerobic energy production creates acidosis. This causes performance to suffer and recovery time to increase. Athletes, due to high metabolic calcium use, may also be at increased risk of calcium deficiency, which can lead to stress fractures, shin splints, weak bones, and poor bone healing. When calcium levels drop below normal, muscle cramps may occur as low levels of calcium in the blood can increase the sensitivity of the nerves and cause muscles to go into spasm. Experts believe that calcium plays an important role in circulation and heart function. The heart’s electrical muscle contractibility has been proven by researchers to be due to the presence of ions of calcium. In the heart muscle, as the calcium ion accumulation ability declines, so does the ability to carry out contraction and relaxation. In addition, calcium deficiency can lead to high blood pressure. Many medical experts agree arteriosclerosis is brought on by the build-up of plaque, causing hardening of the arteries. These experts believe plaque is composed of collagen, phospholipids, fibrin, triglycerides, mucopolysaccharides, cholesterol, heavy metals, proteins, muscle tissue and metabolic waste products, all bonded together with calcium. Cholesterol is not the main cause of plaque build-up, it is acidosis. Arteries have an inner circular muscular layer that allows for expansion and contraction to regulate the blood pressure and maintain a gradual delivery of blood to the organs as well as an equal distribution of blood nutrients to all parts of the body, including the heart. A calcium deficient, acidic cellular condition can result in cell breakdown along the membranes of the muscles of arteries. When this coat of muscle in the artery breaks down it is replaced with immobile collagen, probably to protect the artery from bursting. Rigidity in the previously flexible internal layer lining the artery that is in contact with the blood becomes irritated and inflamed. This creates minute ruptures to appear in the wall. The result is the formation of negatively charged locations in the artery for the positive calcium in the blood serum to attach. Ca++ is usually on the inside of cells with some on the outside of the cell wall. Acid causes this to reverse. Ca++ is now in the blood and will attach to calcium receptor sites in arteries. Next...polar stacking occurs...polar fats begin to stack on the calcium along with cholesterol fibrin, phospholipids and collagen, creating a patch to repair the break. This action effectively patches the arterial weak point. But in doing so, it also plugs the lumen of the artery eventually causing arteriosclerosis to develop. This condition can be lessened and/or reversed by treating it as a calcium deficiency created acidic condition which needs a rise in the blood pH to reverse the process, repair the arterial damage, and restore arterial muscle flexibility.

Calcium and Tissue Interactions

When the cell environment is in an acidic state, each glucose molecule produces two lactic acid molecules. This lactic acid production drops the pH of the cell preventing the glucose in the cell from producing the, C, T, and G radicals required for DNA synthesis. Incomplete DNA synthesis often results in cell mutations. This means that calcium deficiency produces unhealthy and potentially cancer causing biochemistry, high acid, low oxygen, and DNA damage. The New England Journal of Medicine reports: “Adding calcium to the diet can keep you from getting tumors in the large intestines.” Calcium deficiency may play a role in colon cancer. Researchers have found that people who eat a lot of calcium containing foods are less likely to develop colon cancer than those who eat small amounts. Calcium may also normalize the growth of cells in the intestinal wall thus protecting against cancerous changes. Many experts say calcium is a critical element in the prevention of cancer, in the process of DNA syntheses, in extending life, and in the treatment and prevention of disease. Calcium deficiency is the universal property of all cancer cells. Dr. Susan Larkin, MD, in Women’s Health Today: Jan. 2009, reports: “1/3 of American women get some form of cancer every year. What is the common link in cancer’s growth and development? It’s cancer’s reliance on an acidic environment in the body. That’s right. Cancer thrives in an overly acidic, oxygen deprived environment!” In the 1950’s cancer was striking one out of every three people; by the year 2012, at the current rate of change, it is predicted that cancer will strike one out of every two people. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports: “Increasing calcium turns cancerous cells (epithelia) to normal and might also prevent breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. “

Many natural health experts warn that when calcium deposits are found in the breasts, kidneys, muscles, and anywhere else in the body, it is your first warning sign of tissue acidosis. It is suggested that at this time you must saturate your system with nutritional ionic calcium to pull that acid out of the tissue as soon as possible. This will help prevent breast cancer and degenerative conditions in other tissues of the body. Several Natural Health authors in our time share some interesting beliefs. Sam Graci in his Anti-Aging Diet says, “There is no known disease causing organism, including bacteria, virus, fungus, yeast, or cancerous cells, that can reproduce itself in a highly oxygenized, alkaline environment.” Carson Pierce states, “I am of the firm belief that all microbes are biochemically incapacitated in the unfriendly pH of 7.0 and above.” Theodore Broody believes that, “An aberrant virus, fungus or bacteria in the body can only survive in an acid environment.... A malevolent opportunistic virus, bacteria, or fungus feeds only on a body that provides food for it, a body laden with tissue acid waste products.... When acid-forming conditions of the body are under control and the body is alkaline, candida albicans will normalize itself back into the intestinal tract from the tissues and the blood.” Experts believe that when the blood is acidic, it causes inorganic calcium to attach to receptor sites on the synovial fluid cells in the joint capsules and stops the flow of synovial fluid. As the amount of inorganic calcium increases, synovial fluid decreases causing irritation that leads to inflammation which contributes to the development of arthritis The same “calcification” process is followed in the creation of kidney stones and gall stones. . Alkalizing the blood, joint capsules, kidneys and gall bladder reverses the process. It has been noted that Parkinson’s Disease may be associated with calcium-aluminum-silicon build-up in lenticular cerebral arteries. Calcium did not cause the problem. In fact, had the calcium been present in the correct amounts in the first place, it’s possible would have prevented cellular breakdown by creating the critical 7.4 pH buffered serum to allow proper brain cell function and repair. The same factors may also hold true for conditions associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Otto Warburg warns us, “If you deprive a cell of 35% of its required levels of oxygen for 48 hours, the cell is likely to become cancerous”. In an analysis involving more than 293,000 men and 198,000 women in the National Institute of Health-American Association of Retired Persons (NIH-AARP) Diet and Health Study, high intakes of dietary calcium and supplemental calcium were associated with an approximately 20 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer among men and approximately 30 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer among women. In an Abstract from Creighton University Medical Center,, it was stated that; 1) depletion of the calcium nutrient reserve contributes to the osteoporosis problem, 2) depletion of calcium for digestive function contributes to kidney stones and colon cancer and 3) depletion effects hormone formation and release contributing to hypertension, preeclampsia, obesity and insulin resistance. The abstract also states that the best source of calcium is through organic foods.

What Makes Ionic Coral Calcium Unique? Many experts agree that our bodies do not respond as well to the inorganic chemical form of calcium as they do to the bioorganic calcium in foods. This is a big debate between natural health and most medical professionals. People are becoming more aware of the differences and the importance of those differences. As a result, people are beginning to look for organic products. They don’t realize that the laws of most states say that manufacturers can call their products “organic” if they contain only 1 to 2% organic material. It is therefore necessary not only to read labels, but to be able to interpret what those labels actually mean. Manufacturers state coral calcium is a 100% organically produced product that can be absorbed into the blood serum very quickly and, therefore, is more bioavailable than other forms of calcium supplements. Many people have questioned whether the porosity of coral calcium is different than the porosity of mineral forms such as calcium carbonate. As you can plainly see in the pictures depicted below, there is an obvious difference between the rates of porosity. This vastly changes the bioavailability of the minerals. An article published in the Norwegian magazine Hammer Arbeiderbald #2 states that a science team took coral water samples and found that the coral water produced “has a unique composition similar to the composition in the human skeleton, bodily fluids and the amniotic fluids.” In addition to being easily absorbed, creating alkalinity, being a powerful source of antioxidants and containing important buffering minerals, the chemical composition of the coral minerals is so like the human skeleton that in certain hospitals in France it is used in connection with bone transplants. After a short period of time the coral has integrated with the skeleton, and it is difficult to tell the coral from the bone. Department chief, senior physician Dr. Ole Jacob Braendjord at Hedmark Central Hospital in Elverum, Norway, comments about how he has found a 100% natural product which can improve the conditions of people with degenerative conditions. He goes on to describe some other findings. “We have already noticed, in uncontrolled tests, that coral water has a positive effect on cancer, fibromyalgia, rheumatism, and psoriasis.” The Japanese have studied the health results for 15 years. Costly investigations and research on the effectiveness of the coral calcium minerals have shown that it elevates alkalinity as well as eliminating the chlorine in water. It also binds to, and helps remove heavy metals and prevents the growth of bacteria.

Quite possibly one of the most important facts about coral calcium is its symbiotic relationship with Zooanxthella, endozoic, algae. The Zooanxthella algae lives within the chambers and tubules of the coral. The algae removes the inorganic minerals from the ocean water and, during photosynthetic transference, changes the inorganic minerals into ionic organic minerals. The minerals and nutrients the live coral receives from the algae are stored in the coral’s outer shell. Natural abrasion on the outer shell of the coral helps to produce millions of tons of coral grains annually that are rich in these nutrients. The high alkalinity of the ocean water acts to preserve these ionic minerals and nutrients contained in the coral grains. Yunichi Hosokawa, professor at the research center in Tsukuba, northwest of Tokyo, studied the coral and its minerals. He claims there is a direct connection between calcium and good health. There is documentation, which shows that it may be very effective against rheumatism, gallstones, heart and vascular disease, high levels of cholesterol, and strokes. With some nutrients such as salt, sodium chloride, and coral calcium, all that is needed is exposing it to fresh water to initiate immediate ionization. This is due to the presence of hydrogen ions (H)+ and hydroxyl ions (OH)- which are split from the water molecule (H2O). Other nutrients, including coral minerals in capsule or powder form, require acid to ionize them. Coral minerals, because of their biological nature, is already in a stable ionic form. It is one of the few calcium supplements that become actively ionized when added to water. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium are the alkalizing buffers of the body. When they are exposed to water in their ionic form, they produce alkaline solutions with a pH greater than 7.0. Note: Sediment or dissolved solids present in the water inhibits the release of the coral minerals into the water. The purer the water the better the dispersion and the higher the amount of the coral calcium minerals being released into the water. This also creates a higher number of electron donors for the body to use in its fight against free radicals. WARNING: There are other biological calcium supplements available but several health sources advise against using them. How Does Ionic Coral Calcium Affect Water?

In addition to being a natural source of bioavailable, bioabsorbable ionic calcium, coral calcium has a profound effect on the water to which it is added. The water you drink is not necessarily the form of water your body can use in its metabolic functions. Physiologically, there are two forms of water in the body, biological (bioavailable) and industrial (containing acids and other “waste” materials and solids). About the only thing industrial water is good for is taking up space (keeping us at 70% water) and absorbing heat from metabolism to keep our body at the optimal 98.6 degrees. The minerals found in almost all water today are not bioavailable. This means that the body cannot utilize most of the dissolved colloidal minerals in drinking water. These become acid-forming tissue wastes. The body must convert the acid-forming drinking water into biological water. It is easier for the body to do this if you place the sachet into pure or distilled water. In Alkalize or Die, Theodore Baroody says, “In my opinion, distilled water is the only safe water at this time of our earth’s toxic exploitation.... Only distilled water produces a completely negative ion reaction in the system. And negative ions are alkaline-forming. All other forms of water contain varying amounts of positive (acid forming) ions. Tissue waste acids...are positively charged. Distilled water, being negatively charged, draws to it the positively charged waste products and flushes them into the elimination channels.” Biological water displays some unique properties in that it has a different water molecular configuration than normal drinking water. Sang Wang, in his book Reverse Aging, explains, “Water from biological sources have 62% hexagonal structures (six sided molecules structures), 24% pentagonal structures (five sided molecule structures), and 14% other structures. In normal water there are 3 to 4% hexagonal structures and the rest are pentagonal structures.” “It can be said that hexagonally structured water is the water that living organisms like.”

Coral calcium added to any water, but especially to distilled water, greatly increases the amount of hexagonal molecular configurations (biological) formed within that water. Professor Wang points out an interesting feature about the coral calcium supplement when it is added to water. “Water surrounding a malignant tumor doesn’t have many structures (molecular configurations).... Ionized calcium atoms form hexagonal water structures around malignant tumors.” Professor Wang goes on to say, “A 10 oz. glass of alkaline water with a pH of 10 contains 1021 hydroxyl ions (OH-) and each one of them is mated with positively ionized alkaline minerals such as Ca++. This translates into 33.3 mg of ionized calcium atoms in that glass. Drinking 5 glasses of this water daily will gradually lower the body’s acidity and enable the body to dispose of all the waste products produced daily and then some.” Coral calcium minerals have been tested to determine its bioavailability, its bioabsorbability, and its oxidation factor on body tissue. Oxidation in the tissues and cells can be destructive or constructive. It is tied in closely with the acid or alkaline pH of the body. In an acidic (positively charged) environment, oxidizing substances act destructively, whereas in an alkaline (negatively charged) environment they act positively. In chemical terms, oxidation-reduction reactions are exchanges of electrons, which create a positive or negative electrical potential. This electrical potential can be read on an oxidation-reduction (redox) meter. Free or “active” oxygen gives positive readings on the redox meter. Free oxygen can react violently with other substances within the body, often destroying normal cell membranes and tissue and inducing conditions such as arteriosclerosis, cerebral apoplexy, myocardial infarction, and carcinogenesis. Along with accelerating wrinkles, freckles, and other signs of skin aging, activated oxygen also oxidizes cell membranes in living material, injures genes in the cell nucleus, and gives rise to large variety of degenerative diseases. An alkaline environment neutralizes this active, positive oxygen and inhibits or prevents these dangerous reactions. Oxidation Reduction Potential and free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules created by lifestyle and naturally by the normal biological and metabolic process of the body. A free radical attaches itself to a stable molecule within the body and steals its electron. That molecule then steals an electron from another molecule and so on. One free radical can cause a chain reaction that can affect hundreds of normal molecules. The proliferation of free radicals has been linked to over 80 health conditions, not the least of which is cancer. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons. Of course, once the antioxidant donates its electron, it becomes a weaker free radical itself, in search of another electron. What your body needs is a superior natural antioxidant, one that can neutralize free radicals without itself becoming a free radical. The discovery of coral calcium minerals has provided us with just that. ORP stands for “Oxidation Reduction Potential.” An ORP in the positive mV (Millivolts) range indicates oxidation and the absence of electrons and poor body electroconductivity. When an ORP is

in the negative mV range it creates a “reduction”, indicating the presence of electrons. When ORP measurements change by 59 millivolts as shown in the first two lines under ORP (mV) (400 - 341 = 59), it shows a 10 to 1 difference in available electrons. The number increases by 100 to 1 for a 118 millivolt shift and 1,000 to 1 for a 177 millivolt shift. Distilled water has an ORP of about +130. After you add 1gram of coral calcium the measurement of distilled water reads -273 (see chart above). This shows that when coral calcium was added to the distilled water, it became 100 thousand times more potent in electrons and antioxidant power. The numbers in this chart are achieved using marine coral calcium sachets with no vitamins or other ingredients added. Other coral calcium products or products with extra vitamins and materials etc. added will not produce the same results When you “reduce” oxygen, you bond it to other minerals or elements causing it to give up its electrons, thus stopping the destructive process. Natural spring water and coral calcium water have an abundance of dis¬solved minerals so they reduce the free oxygen, creating negative readings on the redox meter. Modern physiology information suggests that when the number of negative hydrogen ions is increased, the number of electrons available for the body to use as antioxidants to repair free radical damage is also in¬creased. This allows the body to heal quickly and to maintain a high level of health. Normal city tap water has an electrical potential that usually records in the plus numbers on a redox

meter. This is detrimental to the metabolic function of the body. Coral calcium mineral complex, when added to any water, causes the redox readings to go into the negative numbers. However, the redox reading has a higher negative value if distilled water is used. This produces highly bioavailable, “wetter” water. “Wetter” water contains hexagonal molecules and makes it easier for the body to transport vital nutrients throughout the tissues as well as facilitating their absorption into the cells. Improving Your Health and The Detoxification Process When you have a good nutritional program in place and are taking good nutricuetical supplements that Alkalize, Cleanse, Nourish, and Balance, the body; you begin to “detoxify” the tissues and organs. The process of toxic/acidic cleansing is called detoxification. Possibly one of the most valuable aspects of the coral minerals is their ability to initiate a detoxifying effect in the human body. Note: There are several coral products available on the market created from the 2,500 different species of coral. In our opinion, Sango coral mineral products produce the highest and most consistent results. The other coral products do not reflect nearly the level of health benefits as those of the Sango coral. In fact, there are coral products that show no health benefits whatsoever, and if they have not had the toxic heavy metals removed, can be detrimental to health. According to scientific studies, when the ionic coral calcium and other minerals enter the bloodstream, it tends to produce an alkalizing effect. When this alkalizing effect is initiated, the body is able to release toxins that have been stored in the adipose (fat) and other tissues of the body. We have found that these toxins may consist of a wide range of substances including, heavy metals, chemicals, and other agents that the body was not able to break down and eliminate. A person who is extremely toxic may experience a “Healing Crisis” before they actually begin to feel better. In our years of working with the Coral we have found that this process is much more evident when the sachet (tea bag) form of coral minerals is used. Understand that a “Healing Crisis” is a “good thing” and not an excuse to give up the detoxification procedure. The body will do it’s best to maintain a homeostatic balance so that all the systems and organs function at their optimum level. However, because of diet, chronic disease, injury, and stressful lifestyles, we gradually move the body out of balance. This results in the accumulation of acids and poisons (toxins) in the fat, tissues, and organs of the body. Disease and degenerative conditions thrive in this type of acidic environment.

Therefore, in order to regain homeostasis and maintain optimal health, the body must rid itself of these harmful substances. During the first phase of detoxification (called catabolism), the emphasis is on the cleansing of the tissues and the elimination of toxins. The body begins to “clean house”. This consists of removing the metabolic and toxic garbage deposited in all of the tissues. Think of your body as a fish bowl that has never had the water replaced. How contaminated do you think that water would be? The body says to itself, “Now we have a chance to get rid of this old toxic water and build a healthy new body. Let’s get this excess bile out of the liver and gall bladder and send it to the intestines for elimination. Let’s get the sludge moving out of the arteries, veins, and capillaries. These acid-produced arthritic deposits, in the joints, need alkalizing and cleaning up. Let’s get these irritating food preservatives, aspirins, sleeping pills, and pharmaceutical drugs out of the tissues and fluids of the body.” This catabolic stage can last hours, days, or even up to several weeks for those who are highly toxic. During catabolism, wastes are discarded more rapidly than new tissue is made. Energy from the muscles and skin begins to move into the internal organs to start regeneration. This shunting of much of the body’s power to the internal region produces a feeling of weakness and less energy in the muscles. Actually, your vital energy is increasing. However, most of it is being used for cleansing and rebuilding the internal tissues and organs therefore, less of it is available for muscular work. Any weakness, which is felt at this time, is not true weakness but merely a re¬deploying of forces. During catabolism it is important for the person to stop wasting energy and to rest and sleep more. If the person resorts to stimulants of any kind, he will reverse and defeat the regenerative intent of the body. Occasionally an individual may experience “flu-like” symptoms during this stage and want to quit. DON’T! That person may need to slow down the detox process. But don’t give up. A person must give his body a chance to adjust and complete this first phase of action. It is important to have patience and faith and just wait it out. The end result will be increased strength, health, and well being. Success in recovery or improvement of health hinges upon the correct concept: The body is using its main energies in more important internal work and not wasting it in external work involving muscle movements. Be wise, take it easy, and relax. Naturally speaking, the body heals itself from the top down and from the inside out. The second phase of detoxification is called stabilization. This is a “resting time” when the body remains more or less stable. The amount of toxic waste material being discarded daily is equal to the amount of tissue which is being formed and replaced. Stabilization occurs only after the excess of toxins and other deteriorating material in the tissues has been removed. The third phase is a building period called anabolism. At this point, new tissues are rapidly being formed. The higher the percentage of natural and raw food one consumes and the purer, more alkalizing, and more nourishing the supplements taken are, the quicker one advances into this third phase. It is during this phase that the body is alkalizing the tissues and fluids of the body and realigning its energies to bring the body back into homeostatic balance. It is extremely important to understand how the detoxification process can physically manifest itself. At the beginning of the cleansing process, headaches may occur, fever and /or colds may appear,

the skin may break out, frequent urination is common, and there may be a short interval of bowel sluggishness or the opposite may also occur. The symptoms you experience during detoxification will vary according to the toxins being discarded, the conditions of the organs involved in the elimination, and the amount of energy you have available. Those who have practiced healthy lifestyles and eaten healthy foods will have reactions ranging from al¬most none at all to very mild symptoms, which may be slightly uncomfortable. Those who have had less healthy habits and have ingested more poisons will experience more severe symptoms. Especially if their liver, kidneys, or other important eliminating organs have been damaged. When the symptoms are present, the more you rest, sleep, and drink plenty of good alkalized water, the milder they will be, and the more quickly they will end. People going through detox often ask, “How come I don’t feel wonderful? I’m eating better now than I ever did before, and instead of improving, I’m getting worse.” They don’t understand that the body is naturally cleansing and re¬building. Though unpleasant at the moment, these actions are constructive. This is nature’s way of housecleaning and is part of the curing process. Don’t try to stop these symptoms by the use of certain drugs or even massive doses of vitamins, which can often act as drugs when, consumed in huge concentrations. Don’t try to cure the cure. The great majority of people find their reactions tolerable and are encouraged to bear with them because of the improvements to their health. Instead of fighting the detoxification process be happy you are having symptoms! Your body is becoming younger and healthier every day because you are throwing off more and more toxic wastes. By eliminating the old built-up toxins, you are saving yourself from more serious disease conditions, which may result, if you keep the toxins in your body. Diseases such as hepatitis, kidney disorders, blood disease, heart disease, arthritis, nerve degeneration, and cancer are associated with an acidic/toxin stressed body. Don’t expect to feel better and better each day until you reach perfection. The body regenerates in stages, and health returns in a series of gradual steps. In some individuals these stages happen quickly; for others, it can be slower. For example, let’s say you have some form of chronic disease so you start a nutritional program and begin taking nutritional supplements. For a while, you feel much better. But after a time, a detox symptom occurs. You may have a skin rash, feel nauseous, and have diarrhea with foul- smelling stools. After a few days, you feel better than before. Then, you suddenly develop a cold, feel chills, and lose your appetite. After two or three days (assuming you don’t take drugs nor do anything else about it), you recover and feel better than you have for years. And so it goes, each reaction going milder than the last as the body becomes healthier. Each health crisis becomes shorter in duration and is followed by a longer period of feeling better than ever before until you have achieved homeostatic balance. When you reach a state of high alkalinity and balanced health, you become relatively toxin and dis¬ease-free. Remember, you did not reach your level of deteriorated health overnight, and there are no “silver bullet” cures that will immediately return you to good health.

However, you will be pleasantly amazed at how quickly you can recover your health. To achieve this: follow a sound nutritional program, take the necessary nutritional supplements that will alkalize, cleanse, balance and nourish your body, (ionic coral calcium minerals is our choice of supplements to help you achieve these improvements) and realize that your body will be going through a healing detoxification process. Your ultimate goal is to reach and maintain homeostasis (balance) within your body as well as in your life. The key word during the detoxification process is patience, patience, patience and more patience.

Chapter Twelve

Marine Grade vs. Above Sea

Is the harvesting of coral minerals for human consumption ecologically safe? Absolutely! Provided they are harvested by a reputable company that is sanctioned by the government where the coral is being harvested. In Japan, the Okinawa prefectural government maintains very strict guidelines for protecting the coral reefs. Their guidelines for harvesting marine grade (below sea level) include respect, protection and harvesting methods that actually improve the living coral reef ecosystem. How are these guidelines carried out? • Ideal Ocean Depth - Coral thrives in shallow waters, where an abundance of sunlight reaches the ocean floor. Normally, coral lives in depths up to 30 meters. Harvesting is only allowed in depths greater than 60 meters, well past the outer boundaries of living coral. • Safe Distance from the Reef - Coral reefs extend to about 500 meters from the shore, where depths remain constant at around 30 meters. After 500 meters, the ocean floor slopes suddenly downward to a depth of 50 meters. The government guidelines forbid coral grain collection closer than 1,000 meters from the coral beds. • Gentle Stirring of Coral Grains - Harvesting of the coral grains is usually accomplished by vacuum pumps touching the ocean floor to obtain the coral grains with a minimum of agitation. The gentle agitation that does exist stirs the coral deposits and sediment on the ocean floor

releasing nutrients back into the ecosystem. Ocean currents carry these nutrients to the live coral beds providing additional nutrients for growth. The following are letters provided by companies that produce marine grade coral mineral products. DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY BIOLOGICAL AND MARINE SCIENCE FACULTY OF SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF THE RYUKYUS Nishihaura-cho Okinawa, Japan The “coral grains” are the weathered remains of fragments of debris coral reef marine organisms. These particles are originally formed in the coral reef area weathered by tide and wave motions and/ or by interaction with seawater. They accumulate at the sea bottom near the coral reef area where the current is gentle. The harvest of “Coral Grain” does not give damages on the living coral, but only collects naturally formed coral grains. As metaphorically speaking with tree and leaves, we do not cut down the tree nor living leaves, but only gather the fallen leaves. It is important to say that, as a regal subject, harvest of the grains is controlled under the Okinawa Prefecture Government regulation. It is considered that controlled harvest, with a fully supervised environmental conservation, does not give harm to the natural environment nor cause the exhaustion of reef building coral grains. According to a study by oceanographers, the annual production rate of the “coral grain” is estimated to be approximately 3kg/m squared in the coral reef sea around the Ryukyu Islands. Since the coral reef building sea area in Okinawa Prefecture is approximately 800 km squared, it is calculated that approximately 2.4 million tons of “coral grain” is naturally produced annually. We can safely claim that at least 1.2 million tons of the “semi-fossilized (weathered) reef building coral grain” is naturally produced annually. Therefore, harvesting 100 tons monthly (1,200 tons annually) is equivalent to 0.01% of the “coral grains” annual production, and we can say that there is of so little consequence as to warrant little or no attention to the impact on the ecological system of reef building coral and environment, at the present rate. Professor, Tomotsu, Oomori Department of Chemistry, Biology, and Marine Sciences Faculty of Science, University of Ryukyus Letter #2 The sea area of Kerema Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan is one of the most famous places in the world where reef-building coral spawns. Harvesting utilizes the semi-fossil of weathered reef building coral grain from the sea bottom in this area which is appointed by the Okinawa Prefectural Government. Harvesters respect not only the living reef building coral but also the environmental conservation of

them. If we compare this with the idea of living tree on the ground, a tree is taken care of and the coral grains utilized can be compared to falling leaves from the tree. Harvesters have joined the “Coral Defense League” which helps to exterminate natural enemies to living coral which eat away the reef building coral. Their effort has been resulting in the successful environmental conservation for the sea of Kerama. Mitsuo Nakamura Mayor of Zamami Village, Okinawa Pref. Above Sea Fossilized Coral Minerals Marine coral is difficult to harvest but seems to be the preferred source for coral mineral products. However, there are 2 other ways to obtain coral minerals sources. Both of these are defined as “above water” sources. The above sea coral was formed below the ocean and through geological up-rising of land or because of the rise and fall of the oceans over eons of time, the coral is now located above the sea. One way of harvesting this above sea coral is by simply bulldozing the surface coral and processing it into some kind of product. Coral that has been scraped from the surface is inferior to below sea or “mined” coral in that much of the ionic minerals have been leached from the coral. Contact with Fresh water dissolves salt water coral. Therefore, as the coral is exposed to rain (fresh water), the coral matrix is dissolved exposing the minerals. As the fresh water percolates through the coral it absorbs the coral’s ionic minerals. The ionic mineral rich water is trapped in ground water which often finds its way to streams and rivers or into aquifers that the people draw from for their drinking water. There are still some ionic minerals left in this coral, but the majority of the minerals left behind are actually inorganic minerals that are trapped in the calcium matrix. Usually this type of coral is considered “not for human consumption” by the governments involved, so it is processed as fertilizer for golf courses or pressed into “cakes” to be used in water filtration and purification. However, some companies will capsule this depleted coral and sell it as pure coral calcium mineral supplement. The other way to harvest above sea coral is to mine it. Instead of scraping the coral from the surface, it is mined from below the surface. This “mined” type of coral seems to be as rich in organic ionic minerals as is the below sea, marine coral. The main benefits for both marine bed coral minerals and above water “mined” coral minerals are: • increased pH and ORP or antioxidant potential. • the perfect balance of ionic minerals. The sachet or tea bag form containing either marine or above sea mined coral minerals will give you the best pH and ORP values. The pH will usually be around 10.5 and the ORP will be around -270. The marine and also the mined coral can be crushed and sold as coral calcium powder (CCP) in a 15 to 1 ratio of Ca to Mg. The above water “scraped” coral calcium is sold as fossilized coral calcium capsules or powder in a 40 to 1 ratio of Ca to Mg. Many of these latter products have added extra inorganic magnesium to make up for this deficiency. This 40 to 1 ratio compared to the 2:1 SMP ratio or the 15:1 CCP ratio proves above water coral to be a lower quality. The fossilized surface coral

will give a pH reading of around 9.0 and ORP reading around -180 as a stand-alone product which proves it to be a lower quality in those areas compared to the marine or mined coral calcium sachets. Coral fossils are rock-like structures in which, (through the process of fossilization) the original mineral make-up has been replaced with the basic elements of limestone and other inorganic elemental minerals. Though its calcium content is higher it is not ionic calcium, plus it has been depleted of the other 70 plus ionic minerals including magnesium. Fossilized above water coral calcium has had much or all of its minerals replaced with normal elemental minerals. This why the amounts of ionic elements found in marine bed and mined coral minerals differ from that of above water scraped coral calcium. To the best of our knowledge much of the harvested above water coral calcium does not go through a total purification process. It is ozonated to kill bacteria, mold and other harmful contaminants, which is very important, but there is no evidence of the removal of heavy metals, which is a step in correctly processed coral calcium minerals. Heavy metals such as lead and mercury, both of which are toxic to the human body, must be virtually untraceable for the coral product to be considered safe for human consumption. Let’s take the mercury (Hg) for instance. According to what we have seen published, the fossilized above water coral calcium contains .05 ppm of Hg and the marine and mined only contains .01 ppm. It appears that marine bed coral calcium would be the safest coral calcium to consume. On the following page is a Certificate of Analysis which shows the coral product we prefer to be free of dangerous toxic materials, such as, e. coli, heavy metals, mold, etc.. (on next page)

Chapter Thirteen

Implication and Recommendations The standard American diet is notoriously lacking in the vitamins and the trace minerals that would otherwise maintain the body at healthy pH levels. It is high in meat and low in alkalizing fruits and vegetables and leaves an acid residue in the body. This is the natural progression of metabolism and digestion. If the blood serum becomes too acidic, the gathered acids and toxins, are removed from the blood and stored in the liver or in the body’s fat. As a result, the body accumulates toxins and acidic materials throughout the day. The body is designed to detoxify itself each night. As we rest, the body releases calcium, sodium, magnesium, and potassium from its alkaline storage spots, mostly the bones and membranous tissues. It uses these buffers to alkalize the toxins and acids gathered throughout the day. If we do not have these alkaline reserves, the body never becomes completely alkalized or detoxified at night and we begin a buildup of these materials in our cells and tissues. This accumulation upsets the homeostatic balance within the body. Preparation and Processing

One of the most important aspects of using the Sango Coral Calcium mineral complex for the promotion of good health, is the way in which it is prepared. There are companies touting that the Coral products that they have available to the public are of the highest quality and safety as provided by the laws governing their state or other agencies. These companies do not appear to be willing or able to produce the actual processes that verify the claims they are making. There are several properties that distinguish the coral calcium supplement and make it unique from the other forms of calcium supplements. The Coral sand is obtained from skeletons or semi fossils of hermatypic or reef building Sango coral before it is ground during processing. The process is comprised of; 1. crushing the non-living coral grains so that it will sieve through a 40 to 50 micron mesh. 2. washing the coral grains with water. 3. heating desalted coral grains in an inert gas under reduced pressure to activate the coral grains. 4. thoroughly washing the resulting activated coral grains with water. 5. drying the coral in a drying room for 4 hours at a temperature of 50 to 80 degrees Centigrade. Then a two hour round trip to deliver my son, horse and trailer to my mothers. Pain free! Saturday I mowed my yard for the first time in two years! Which takes six to seven hours with a riding lawnmower. Then went to town. Sunday Had to drive to my mothers and pick up my son and take him to U of A. Another 2-hr trip. Actually went to bed and went right to sleep. Note to self: Before starting he Coral Calcium, I wouldn’t have survived a week like this. 1 trip to town would have had me down for 2 days with the heating pad and the back massager. There is no way I would have been able to do the 2 trips to town in one day. Here is also no way I could have driven to town 5 days in a row.
