Welcome to the May edition of

Sherwood Life. Although we love what we do, the last few weeks have presented many more challenges than usual, which culminated with both work and personal family life, each bringing their own unique problems all at once! No matter how organised, and proactive you are, life does get in the way and as you get older and rack up more life experience, you do realise that you can’t control everything that happens to you. Moreover, at times it’s accepting that it’s not what happens that makes the difference, but it’s how you react to what happens to you, which determines how your life journey progresses. In the last month, we’ve come to appreciate just how much support we have from both our friends and family and in particular our fabulous staff. There may not be many of us here at Sherwood Life, but we’re a dedicated team and now more than ever we’re extremely grateful for each member of the team. The point we’re trying to make is that whether you realise it or not, most of us have our own support network around us, and it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help when you need it, in fact it’s just the opposite. Yet in addition to your friends, neighbours and family, there are also times in our life when we need help from external sources to our usual support networks. There are numerous local groups and organisations who can offer you the support and advice that you need.

Follow us:

We've got some great articles this week, including the benefits of holidaying at home this summer on page 6, how to grow cracking courgettes on page 34 and another fantastic recipe from Helen Thompson on page 24 — plus many more. Our website www.sherwoodlife. com is also proving popular, with many of you choosing to read the magazine on there, as well as checking in daily and weekly to see what events and things to do are going on in your local area and further afield, with our local events listings. If you have an event to promote; be it a business networking event to a summer fete or a charity fundraiser to a family fun day out, then the local events system on our website is free for everyone to use. It’s easy to use and only takes two minutes to add your event, and you can even then promote your event on Twitter and Facebook directly from the event listing, with everyone you know too, so why not give it a go? We hope you enjoy this month's magazine!

Don’t Lose Your Home to Care Fees! With local authorities now able to recover care fees from individuals entering the care system, many elderly and not so elderly people are looking for ways to protect their estate, to pass it on to their children and avoid it being wiped out by care home fees. However, the concept of “deliberate deprivation” and the risks associated with any divorce and debt of the children receiving the home, means that simply giving away your home to your children is now generally not the best solution. Whilst entering a care home may seem a distant possibility, your current Mirror Wills leaving everything to each other and then to your children will not protect you or your home in the event that you do need to contribute to your care. Our local specialist Wills and Trusts Solicitors can offer you a number of other solutions including a Property Trust Will or Property Protection Trust. These types of trusts can be made by anyone who owns their own home (jointly or alone), who is in a good state of mental health and wishes to protect their assets. They can protect your home for your children or your surviving partner/spouse if you die before them or go into care.

The Property Trusts can: • Give your partner a right to live in your home for the rest of their life even if you go into care • Stop your home being sold to pay for care home fees • Still let you move house if you need to whilst you’re alive • Make sure your children or chosen beneficiaries receive the money from your house when you die • Make sure your children can’t sell the house or make you move out whilst you’re alive.

us much more interesting people, with more to talk about and share, and we’ll return to work with our body and mind refreshed and raring to go! A few days’ break is not only a great stress buster, but is also a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with your loved one, without the intrusion of day to day responsibility. You’ll have more time to talk, appreciate one another and enjoy the simple pleasures in life together. Getting away from it all, also doesn’t mean having to haul to a different country, or jumping in the car or hopping on the train to travel for miles. Why not take a break closer to home? Within a 15 mile radius, you’ll find some fabulous some great countryside, hotels, country parks, restaurants and tourist attractions, which makes the idea of ‘holidaying at home’ a reality, whilst still being able to ‘get away from it all’! You could even benefit from a new discount scheme inspired by London 2012.

Take a local break Debbie Singh-Bhatti on the benefits of a break, especially at home

We all look forward to the

weekend when we can take a break from the stresses and strains of the working week, but how often are our hopes and expectations of a fun-filled few days dashed when we get caught up in household chores and responsibilities? Though catching up on home maintenance is necessary from time to time, we must not overlook the importance of proper rest and relaxation. Experts say that getting away — even for a short period — does wonders for both body and mind, and that regular breaks are a necessity, not a luxury. These days there are a myriad of opportunities to escape for a few days; from an exciting city break to a relaxing retreat in the country, a soothing spa stay to 6 Sherwood

a frantic foreign escapade, there is something to suit everyone! They say a change is as good as a rest, and in order to return from a couple of days away feeling revitalised and rejuvenated, it is not necessary to have spent the whole weekend with your feet up doing nothing. On the contrary, a brisk walk or two in the fresh air, a round of golf or a couple of lengths in the hotel pool, will give your lungs a work-out and improve your breathing, and you’ll also benefit from any extra exposure to sunlight. A break from the normal daily routine prevents our mind and body from stagnating. Seeing and doing the same thing every day reduces the mind’s efficiency, so we need new stimulants to ensure we’re operating at our peak. Travel gives us the chance to visit new places, meet new people and encounter new experiences, which all serve to make

Speaking at the World Travel Market, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced that many firms and businesses are taking part in the 20.12 % discount scheme. The initiative was launched by VisitEngland as part of a campaign to use the Olympics to boost domestic tourism. Under the scheme, holidaymakers booking a UK short break with many providers, before the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games will be eligible for a 20.12% discount. So, if your Saturdays are more gloomy than glorious and your Sundays are long and laborious, maybe it’s time you took yourself away for a few days to transform your weekend from something mundane and monotonous, to an occasion that you look forward to with enthusiasm and relish. Make your weekend memorable by taking a short break! │ e: │ t: 01777 839199

Wood & Multi- Fuel Heating There is nothing quite like a real fire to give that enduring warmth to your home.

These stoves not only look great but will heat your home in a very efficient manner. The constant source of heat and continual air changes reduce condensation; and by burning renewable fuels such as wood you are participating in a natural cycle that is of great benefit to the environment. With high prices of oil and gas, burning wood and solid fuel to heat your home makes great economic sense.

can purchase proprietary apps from Microsoft and its partners, as well as an ever expanding selection from third party developers. The apps can be opened with a tap of the screen or a click of the mouse and a bar on the left hand side of the screen shows any apps that are open, enabling users to move easily between them. It will also be easy to swipe apps onto the start screen and zoom out on the screen to make more apps visible. One of the criticisms of earlier versions of Windows, particularly Vista, was the amount of memory and processing power they used. Windows 8 is far more efficient and delivers the twin benefits of increased battery life and much quicker operating speeds. Smaller batteries will also support the development of the next generation of ultra slim lightweight laptops. The big question is whether Windows 8 will be good enough to halt Microsoft’s slow but steady decline, particularly in the face of the

Calling all late-comers Graham Iek asks if Windows 8 will be too late for the party

Microsoft have already

leaked a launch date for the latest version of their hugely successful Windows operating system, October of this year. The prototype is already out in the public domain for Beta testing so I can safely say that this is a firm date. Given that the well regarded Windows 7 was only released in October 2009, Microsoft might be seen to be unduly hasty; after all, Windows XP stuck around for six years. But here are two statistics that might explain the urgency — over 90% of the personal computers in the world run on some version of Windows whereas less than 6% of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, use the Windows mobile operating system. More importantly, sales of PCs and laptops are in decline whereas sales of smartphones and 8 Sherwood

tablets have increased dramatically over the last three years. So, what is Windows 8 doing to bridge the gap between PC and mobile device? For starters, Microsoft seems to have decided to leave smartphones to the dominant player, Android. Windows 8 will operate on PCs, laptops and tablets and will be compatible with a mouse or a touch screen. There will also be an ARM chip designed for use with it — ARM is the main supplier of chips for mobile devices. The appearance will be more familiar to those who normally use a tablet. Rather than opening a desktop user interface from which they launch a Start menu, users will access a Start screen which is populated by colourful tiles which Microsoft describes as "Metrostyle” apps. Standard apps will be a mail server, Internet Explorer, contacts and so on but there will also be a Windows Store, Microsoft’s answer to the App Store, where users

meteoric rise of Apple and Google. If we’re talking about smartphones, Microsoft have been wise not to join in the battle; ultimately, that is a war that can only have one victor and I’m betting it will be Android. Here’s something else to consider — PCs have become a tool for working, from using a spreadsheet for your accounts to writing an essay for homework, whereas a tablet is really a leisure tool used for playing games, Facebooking or streaming videos. The tablet version of Windows 8 features two telling innovations — one is a split qwerty keyboard with a permanent number pad in the middle, the other is a version of Microsoft Office as one of the default apps. This means a tablet with Windows 8 as the operating system can be used equally well for work or play — it has bridged the great divide that has emerged between PC and mobile device. For that reason, if for no other, it deserves to succeed. │ e: │ t: 01777 839199

Store takes on 60 minute challenge Progressive Furnishings is a family run business that specialise in solid oak furniture with dovetail joints, they also sell leather and fabric sofas, all with traditional build quality and an extensive range of home accessories. They were spotted by 60 minute makeover and DIY SOS designer Julia Kendal whilst browsing online, looking for quality oak furniture suitable for her project featuring a family home in Uxbridge on 60 minute makeover. Jonathan Mee, Proprietor of progressive Furnishings, said that it would be a privilege to take part in the episode, as the company had previously been involved in a similar makeover with the show at Sutton in Ashfield in 2008 and enjoyed every minute of it. The Progressive Furnishings team involved in this makeover included Store Manager James Mee and Sales Assistant Tom Musson. James said “This was an opportunity that couldn’t

be missed. The whole experience was much more natural than you might expect. We are used to working with quality furniture every day, it’s what we do best. And in this case there just happened to be a film crew watching. Everyone’s team work skills were fantastic on set and we were made to feel very welcome. Our skills were put to good use that day!” When the room was completed it looked stunning. The Progressive team were given lots of compliments on their oak furniture from the cast and crew members which meant a lot considering these people deal with lots of different furniture in their line of work every day. James added “Tom and I had a great day, We would both like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone on set, and feel privileged to have taken part in the show and hopefully we have helped make a difference to this families life.”

Tissue salts: what they are and what they do Sue Blain on the importance of a good tissue salt balance

When you feel in need of a

boost, following a long illness or a bout of flu; when nails and hair are in poor condition or you’re suffering aches and pains, many of us reach for multi-vitamins or mineral supplements, unaware that tissue salts (sometimes called mineral or cell salts) might be more helpful. The tiny homeopathically -prepared pills are considered by many to be a better way of dealing with mineral deficiencies than regular supplements. They are certainly cheaper! They balance the mineral levels in our cells, whether skin, bone, nerve, muscle or brain cells, which are then more able to absorb nutrients from our food. They are also safe as they do not cause a harmful build up of the mineral and they do not upset the digestive system 14 Sherwood

│ May 2012

with extra fillers and binders. They simply dissolve in the mouth and go straight into the bloodstream. The tiny amount of lactose in each pill does not often upset the lactose intolerant. They were developed by a German doctor, Dr Schuessler, after he discovered there were 12 main mineral salts to be found in the ashes of cremated bodies. His theory maintains that a correct balance of these mineral salts is vital to ensure normal cell function. They are useful for all ages, from teething babies and fast growing teenagers through to the elderly, to ensure adequate nutrition. No doubt many have seen the blue and white tubs of the 12 different Tissue Salts and the multi-coloured 18 combination remedies, labelled A-S, lined up in the health or chemist shops and wondered what they were for! The 3 Calcium salts are responsible for bone, dental and skin

health. There is an emotional element to all the salts but especially in the 3 Potassium salts, which may help anxiety, poor memory and mental confusion as well as fatigue, colds, arthritis inflammation and dry skin. The 3 Sodium salts balance fluids and support the kidneys and digestive systems. The last 3 salts are Iron Phosphate, useful for anaemia, fever and infection; Magnesium Phosphate, for muscle problems and finally Silica, for unhealthy skin, nails and hair. The 18 Combination Salts each contain 3 to 5 of the original salts and are labelled according to the symptoms they deal with, such as coughs and colds, brittle nails, backache or nervous and migraine headaches. Apparently all the salts are found in combinations D, F, M and R and I’ve heard that some people buy only these as it is a cheaper way of having them all at hand for first aid and common complaints! │ e: │ t: 01777 839199

Big event benefi ts HOMES

Craig Brown asks if you could benefit from a big event

I have friends in Cowes

who rent out their four bedroom terrace house during Cowes week each year and take themselves off to a Greek island on the proceeds. It is well known that people in Wimbledon do the same thing in June and it is anticipated that there will be a bonanza for homeowners in east London during the Olympic Games this summer. Could you do the same thing? If there is any sort of major event close to where you live, for instance a music or sporting festival, or even if you happen to live in a place that is popular with tourists, the answer may well be yes. There are a few provisos; your property should ideally

have three bedrooms or more and be within walking distance or have good public transport links to the event. It also needs WiFi, a flat screen TV, an efficient shower and to be in a good state of décor. The event must also be of at least four days duration. You can let your home out yourself using a variety of websites but I’d suggest using a specialist short term letting agent; they will make sure nothing goes wrong and, most importantly, ensure that you get paid. Typically, they charge between 10 and 15% of the rental income plus VAT, but they will be able to advise you of the realistic market rate for your property. You also need to notify your home insurance provider who may well charge a small premium, and inform your mortgage company, though there is unlikely to be any

Local people are being encouraged to seek out their angelic side and raise funds to beat breast cancer by signing up the Edwinstowe Angels Walk being held in June in support of Breast Cancer Campaign. The five-mile family friendly walk takes place on Sunday 3rd June 2012 around Sherwood Forest and it is hoped that over 200 people will take part. Each walker is also being encouraged to wear fancy dress to help create a trail of pink angels throughout the forest. Julie Hallam, from Edwinstowe, first organised the sponsored walk in 2005 with her friend, Mandy, who had breast cancer. Mandy sadly passed away in 2006 and Julie has continued to host the walk each year in her memory and to date the walk has risen over £86,000 to help Campaign continue funding vital breast cancer research. This year Julie is hoping to make it the most successful walk yet, but needs your help to make it even bigger and pinker than before — so sign up to take part now!

Edwinstowe Angels The walk starts at 10.00am at the Edwinstowe cricket pavilion and is free to take part however every walker is encouraged to raise a minimum sponsorship of £20. All the money raised from the walk will go towards funding the vital work of Breast Cancer Campaign. Following the walk this year, we are joining the Edwinstowe Parish Council

‘Big Lunch’ event in celebration of the Queens Diamond Jubilee, so bring a picnic. A traditional cricket match and family entertainment will continue during the afternoon free of charge on the arena by the fairground. Please come and join us! For more information or to take part in the Edwinstowe Angels Walk please call Julie on 07973 676950.

One of the world’s great buildings

was built by a man in memory of his wife — the Taj Mahal. Did you know we have a building in our midst that was built for the same reason? Fortunately the Mausoleum at Milton is now very visible from the bridge at the Markham Moor junction. Henry Pelham-Clinton, fourth Duke of Newcastle married Georgiana MillerMundy. They lived at the Newcastle family estate, Clumber Park. By 1820 Henry and Georgiana had eleven surviving children, but tragedy struck in 1822 when after the birth of twins, one still born and the survivor

Milton Mausoleum

living only two weeks, Georgiana also died, two days after the birth. Henry wanted to build a memorial to his beloved wife. She had already made it known that she wanted to be buried on Golden Hill and Henry carried out her wish. Milton Mausoleum is now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust and is open on the second and fourth Sunday afternoons from May to September, when a steward is present. The Mausoleum is only open regularly in the summer months as there is no heating or lighting. Do you belong to a ramblers group? Why not visit the Mausoleum at the end of your walk. Or perhaps a group of friends or organisation would like to visit, please contact me so I, or another steward can arrange a suitable time. If you want to visit outside the

opening times there are two key holders in Milton. Details are on the notice board at the Milton Mausoleum. Work to install the new windows in the North Aisle has now been completed, and a portable entrance ramp is now available. We have a special Open Day on Sunday 6th May from 2.00pm until 4.00pm with a visit from our Nottinghamshire Councillor, who sponsored the funding from the LIS — Local Improvement Scheme — for the five new windows and the ramp. There is also a mesh matting in the grass from the gate to the Church entrance to facilitate the easier use of wheelchair access. The funding from the LIS has also meant that the Lime trees of The Avenue at Milton have also been trimmed in recent weeks. For further information, please email

Car as tested: Mercedes B200 CDI SE £22,665 RRP

Top of the class? Kit Johnson takes a ride in Mercedes’ new mini MPV

Mention the word Mercedes and most people will conjure up an image of a big executive saloon, probably an S Class. In fact, Mercedes Benz possibly manufactures a more diverse range of cars than any other carmaker on earth, but the one segment it has had limited success in is the family hatchback. Its first effort was the A Class, a small car with two floors, an astonishing amount of interior space and the driving dynamics of a top heavy blancmange. This was quickly stretched in all directions to create the B Class, Mercedes’ take on the compact MPV; the buyers stayed away in droves. I have a theory about this; Mercedes is a prestige brand but the compact MPV is the domain of the volume manufacturers, dominated by cars such as the Vauxhall Zafira, Ford C-Max and Renault Scenic. Audi has had considerable success in the upmarket family hatch segment with the A3 but has wisely shied away from producing a people mover version. So, will the all new B Class transform Mercedes’ fortunes in a sector that is not a natural home to an upmarket badge? They’ve certainly put some effort in; the double floor is a thing of the past, a whole new suspension system has been developed and they’ve even used the car to 22 Sherwood

I drove the more powerful car sits closer to the ground. They’ve done and found it adequately pokey, though a good job on the front end which is it doesn’t feel in any way fast. It’s quite reminiscent of the C Class and looks noisy too, particularly at low revs, and suitably imposing. The creases on the the fuel economy — I averaged 45mpg side panels kick sharply upwards at — is less than the official figures. Where the back doors, making the car look this car is a huge improvement on the like it is leaning forward, and the rear previous model is in the handling; it is pleasantly curvaceous. Helen Thompson shares her favourite baking treats THIS MONTH Delicious homemade Jaffa Cakes

There has always been a debate about Jaffa

Cakes, are they a cake as the name suggests or a biscuit? The Jaffa Cake is described in the Oxford English Dictionary as, “a sponge biscuit with an orange-flavoured jelly filling and chocolate topping”. One of the main culprits of the debate is the Inland Revenue, they have a great interest, and would love the

Jaffa Cake to be a biscuit, and it all comes down to tax. If the Jaffa cake was classed as a biscuit then it would have VAT put on the price of buying them as it would be classed as a luxury item, because of the chocolate on the topping. Personally I would class it as a biscuit, but if the tax man ever asks remember its a cake!

A healthier & wealthier you As the prices of fuel continue to rise, many people look at other ways to save money before making the sacrifice of not driving their car. And why shouldn’t they? In this day and age, the car is deemed as a necessity, something we must have. It gives us a sense of freedom, to be able to nip to the shops, or see our friends or family, but are we going to be priced out of driving our beloved motors? Another alternative to the car (at

least in some instances) is a push bike, be it a road bike or a mountain bike. Generally they cost less than a car can and as they are powered by the rider, there isn’t the added cost of fuel. A bike is relatively easy to self maintain, you can teach yourself the basics, which in turn is a money-saver as well. Yet you can’t forget the health benefits too! Riding a bike on a regular basis helps to keep us active and generally

fitter. On average, an hour-long bike ride burns 594 calories (based on an 11 stone person riding at between 12 and 14mph). Five one-hour rides will burn an average of 2,970 calories, so if you did this in every week — say riding to work instead of driving — you’d be not far off losing a 1lb a week just by making this simple change alone. Now I know that the majority of us will need a motorised form of transport at some point, but if you were to try and cut out half of your trips by car, the possible average saving would be £950 (based on 12,000 miles per year, the average combined mpg of the vehicle being 37.8 and the average cost per gallon being £6) I don’t think it is an amount to be sniffed at. Ask yourself; would you like a pay rise of almost a thousand pounds per year, I know my answer would be yes please! Of course there has to be an initial out-lay for the bike, and then some commitment from you, but isn’t it worth it in the long run (or should that be bike?) for a more fitter, wealthier and healthier you?

Choosing the best boarding for your pet PETS

June Turner BVMS, MRCVS Vetinary Professional

Now that holiday season

is upon us, many pet owners will be thinking about arrangements for their pets while they are away from home. The majority will opt for a boarding kennel or cattery. It is advisable to view the premises before booking your pet in as accommodation and levels of care vary widely. You know what is best for your pet and can select a boarding establishment which is able to provide care that results in minimal disruption to your pet’s usual routine. Beware of kennels and catteries that do not check the vaccination

status of your pet and ask to see your vaccination certificate. Many will be happy to feed special diets and administer medications. Some kennels will also require dogs to be protected against an infectious disease known as “kennel cough”. Kennel cough vaccinations are not generally included in routine vaccination programmes, so it is best to seek advice from your vet. Although kennel cough infections respond to antibiotic therapy, dogs can remain infectious for many weeks following recovery and need to avoid contact with other dogs to avoid spreading the disease. Pet owners who wish to holiday in the UK with their pet can book

accommodation in one of the numerous holiday cottages and hotels which are happy to accept pets. Your vet will probably have a directory of “pet friendly” places that you can visit. If you wish to take your pet abroad, some advance planning is essential. Your pet will need to be issued with a “Pet Passport”. Before this can be issued your pet must be micro chipped and vaccinated against rabies. Having left the UK your pet cannot return within 21 days of rabies vaccination. Booster vaccinations for rabies must be carried out every three years. Up to date advice is available at

Ollerton Jubilee Gardening Club Ollerton Jubilee Gardening

Club is a small group of amateur gardeners who meet on the first Tuesday of each month in the Jubilee Hall at Ollerton, at 7.30pm. The speaker at our April meeting was Ian Cooke, the celebrated exhorticultural lecturer from Nottingham University. Ian’s theme was Colour All Year Round from Shrubs and we were shown some really attractive slides to illustrate his talk. The positioning of each shrub was given importance and Ian told us of soil requirements, whether they needed shade or sun and also how best to water the plants for each of his examples. 20 members were present and they all stayed to enjoy a cuppa and piece of cake baked by Betty Foster to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of our members. We are holding a Spring Show at our next meeting on 1st May and should you wish to pay a visit to one of our meetings, you would be made most welcome.

Every Wednesday at

Thoresby Gallery you can find out something amazing about your local area, by coming along to one of our 2.00pm talks which take place in conjunction with local history groups and enthusiasts. The secret of the Internees at Boughton camp is uncovered on 2nd May and the history of coal mining in Ollerton unearthed on 16th May. If you are interested in the natural history of the area, you can discover how local farmers are managing landscape, wildlife and archaeology on 9th May. You can also find out 32 Sherwood

Sow, grow and harvest If you’ve lost seedlings or had

There are not many vegetables

that are as rewarding, and easy to grow, as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you know what to do with!

Jobs for this month • Keep on earthing up your potatoes to prevent the tubers from turning green • If you’ve planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up • With the colder weather in April you’ll probably need to catch up with sowing crops that it was too cold for last month • As the risk of frost passes, tender crops such as tomatoes or peppers can either be planted out, or on into grow bags • Start winter greens such as cabbages, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts in a seedbed for transplanting to their final positions later 34 Sherwood

trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too — with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same. There’s a good plant stand at the monthly farmers market, and several garden centres or local growers nearby. May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable — the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice — don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to six leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow

quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted too turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag. With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight — use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. If you planted beetroot seeds out in March or April the chances are that they’ll have suffered with the very cold weather that we had last month. Another row sown now may well give you much better results. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now. │ e: │ t: 01777 839199

Wellow maypole celebrations

Monday 4th June is the date to put in your diary for this year’s Maypole Day at Wellow. The May Queen for 2012, Emma Knight, was chosen by villagers in a secret ballot back in February. The children have started to practise their dancing steps, and all are looking forward to the annual Maypole Celebrations, taking place during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend. With Queen Elizabeth II looking back over 60 years, the Maypole Committee has introduced an extra helping of nostalgia into this unique Nottinghamshire event. The most important part of the day will be, of course, the traditional crowning of the May Queen and the dancing around the maypole, newly erected last year, but there will be plenty for all the family to see and do. This year there will be vintage vehicles and miniature steam engines, and old fashioned children’s swingboats will return after many decades’ absence! As ever, there will be traditional Punch and Judy, plus circus skills, and local police dogs will be demonstrating their talents. Together with many varied stalls and rides, live music, and food and drink all day, Wellow Maypole Celebrations are not to be missed. Come and join in the fun between 12.00pm and 5.00pm on Spring Bank Holiday Monday 4th June. Admission is free, with plenty of parking at Wellow Dam. Please view further information online at www.wellowmaypole. or by phoning 01623 824545. Look forward to seeing you there! 36 Sherwood

Pennies in the Park

Lucy Garner, World Junior Road

Race Champion, recently attended Thoresby Park, with her own Penny Farthing to take on the challenge of riding against some of the more seasoned penny farthing racers. Lucy was invited to attend a promotional photographic publicity shoot organised by Mark Ludbrook from www. at Thoresby Park to help advertise the Festival of Cycling that is taking place over the weekend of the 19th and 20th May 2012. The event incorporates various races including circuit races on the private estate roads, where there is a ladies specific race for Elite, first, second, third, fourth and junior category riders; the course is over 2.7km and will take place on Saturday morning. The event is being supported by the Stonebridge Trust who manage the Courtyard and lawns, Thoresby Estate and Warner Leisure the owners of the beautiful Thoresby Hall, and it was organised to raise money for the worthy Notts and Lincs Air Ambulance. Many local businesses have pledged their support and Paul Startin of PS Accountancy has given financial support to ensure the event can take place. This is the first event of its kind in the East Midlands Region and at Thoresby and should provide a weekend of cycling events to cater for all tastes, along with quality food stalls from Nottinghamshire Flavours.

The event starts on the Friday evening at the indoor riding hall situated within the Courtyard, where Joff Summerfield will be presenting his world tour talk. Joff rode around the world on his Penny Farthing, covering a staggering 22,000 miles and the whole journey took two and half years. On Saturday morning there is closed circuit racing on the private estate roads for Youth, ladies and seniors - details can be found on the British Cycling website - and a treasure hunt for penny farthing, unicycle and other cyclists. Go Ride racing will be taking place and then there will be slalom skills racing involving the penny farthing and unicyclists. To complete the Saturdays race events, there will be ‘paperboy race’. On Saturday evening there will be a barn dance, auction and raffle with a hog roast. The Sunday will bring with it more ‘Go Ride’ racing and the feature events including the Unicycle and Penny Farthing Race where the riders will be led out by a 1904 De Dion Bouton motor car. During the afternoon there is some grass track racing on the boundary of the Thoresby Cricket Club organised by Martin Smith of Martin Smith Opticians Lincoln. Parking is free and there is no charge for spectators and all are welcome to see some fast, furious, and interesting racing and to shop at the Courtyard and trade stands that are also attending. All the details are on the website
