Rotherham Life

Welcome!

Welcome to the February edition of Rotherham Life magazine. Traditionally the month of love, February is maybe best known as the home to Valentine’s Day. Love it or hate it, it’s a great excuse to tell those we know that we love them. Consuming much of the world’s news, it can often seem we’ve forgotten how to show our affection for others, but I believe it’s so important to love ourselves and show our love for where we live and who we live with. I’m not talking about grand gestures and huge public displays of affection, but if we are able to do something small to show our love everyday then maybe we’ll feel happier and more content. Make a conscious effort to show your love each day — start this February when the leap year gifts us an extra day too. February is also home to Pancake Day — the perfect

HISTORY

Why do we exchange cards, flowers and gifts with our loved ones on 14th February when the day’s patron saint was a Christian martyr? The origins of St Valentine’s Day are said to have begun as early as the third century and were possibly influenced by the Roman fertility feast of Lupercalia held on 15th February, whose themes and rituals were centred around coupling and new birth. No one is entirely sure who St Valentine was. Valentine or Valentinus was a popular name in Rome and there are at least three Catholic saints known as Valentine who have been venerated over the centuries. Any one of them could have had the Feast of St Valentine named after him when Pope Gelasius turned Lupercalia into a Christian festival in 496 AD. One theory is that St Valentine was a Christian priest in the third century who defied Emperor Claudius II’s edict that no Roman soldiers could marry by performing secret wedding ceremonies for young lovers until he was captured, beheaded (allegedly on 14th February) and buried under a Roman road. It is also thought that St Valentine’s Day may have been merged with a Norman celebration that took place around the same time known as Galatin’s 8 February 2020

The history of Valentine’s Day Catherine Rose gets to the bottom of the day of love Day, meaning ‘a gallant’ or lover. The link between Valentine’s Day and romance was solidified in the late 1300s with Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem Parliament of Foules (Fowls), said to have been written in honour of King Richard II’s betrothal to Anne of Bohemia. It contains the lines: “…For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.” (For this was on St Valentine’s Day when every bird comes there to choose his mate.) Royalty took the notion on board, and by the 1400s it had become traditional for noblemen to write romantic poems to their love interest or ‘Valentine’. The oldest known Valentine still in existence is a poem entitled Farewell to Love written in French by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following capture at the Battle of Agincourt. St Valentine’s Day was clearly

established as a day for lovers by 1600 when Shakespeare referred to it in Hamlet during a speech by Ophelia. By the eighteenth century, handmade Valentine’s cards had become popular and were very elaborate with flowers, ribbons and lace. They would often feature Cupid (whose name means ‘desire’), the mischievous winged son of Venus, Roman goddess of love. He also appeared in much romantic verse as the bringer of often unrequited love — hence a missive was necessary to let the object of your desire know of your affections! With their sentimental notion of romance and the language of flowers, the Victorians elevated Valentine’s Day to the popular celebration it has become today. In 1858, The London Journal wrote of St Valentine’s Day that it was both “natural and proper that at the start of spring the predominating sentiment in the human mind should be the sentiment of love; and to this accordingly the anniversary of our saint is directed”.

Rotherham have been organising and facilitating friendship lunches in the borough for the past 18 months. They currently link with three venues — Sir Jack, Bramley, Ring O Bells, Kimberworth Park and Red Lion, Todwick and all three venues have proved to be very popular, with at least 50 people attending regularly each month. They welcome new and existing friends every month, so they hope to see you at one of the friendship lunches soon. The next Rotherham friendship lunches will be at:

A big thank you to the local entertainers, who make the friendship lunches extra special. The friendship lunches help combat loneliness and social isolation, predominantly in the older community. They link with network partners too, so friends may also find out about other services or community groups that are available to them, or their families. All the friendship lunches are informally ‘dementia friendly’ and therefore ideal for those living with dementia and their families/carers. The venues are accessible to wheelchairs and local care home staff often take some of their residents along to the events too.

What’s on at St Barts, Maltby The year is moving forward very

quickly and St Barts in Maltby is beginning to plan the new year activities. Firstly, a big thank you to all who have supported the roof fundraising activities — they have now reached the grand total of £20,000. There’s a long way to go yet, but it’s a great start. Work will be beginning in the spring on the most urgent repairs while fundraising continues.

The coffee and chat group continues to meet on Tuesday mornings at 10.00am. They will be making pancakes on 25th February. All are welcome to join in. The Sunday Eucharist service takes place at 10.45am every Sunday, with an all age service on the first Sunday of the month. Weddings and baptisms can be booked on Monday evenings from 6.00pm to 7.00pm.

Bananas in blankets Try something different on Pancake Day with these delicious pancake-wrapped bananas. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat! INGREDIENTS • 100g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 1 large egg • 300ml milk • 25g butter TASTY TOP TIP You can make the pancakes a day in advance. Stack on a plate, interleaved with baking paper. Cover and chill in the fridge. Reheat for a few seconds in the microwave. 12 February 2020

• 8 small bananas, peeled • 4 tbsp ready-made chocolate sauce, warmed • Icing sugar and cocoa powder, to dust • Mint sprigs, to decorate (optional) METHOD • Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in the flour. • Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. Cover the jug and leave the batter to stand for about 30 minutes to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand — this will give a lighter pancake. Whisk in a splash of milk or water if

the batter has thickened slightly. • Heat a knob of the butter in a medium sized non-stick frying pan until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. Cook for one to two minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture to make eight pancakes in total, adding more butter to the pan as needed. • Wrap a warm pancake around each banana. Halve each wrapped banana and serve drizzled with warm chocolate sauce and dusted with icing sugar and cocoa powder. Decorate with a sprig of mint, if liked.

ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH BEAUTIFUL NEW TILING • Textured tiles are all the rage, adding depth and interest to a scheme. Look out for soft waves, linear brush strokes, wood-grain effect, rough stone and even fabric- and plaster-like styles. • Bold tiles are becoming more and more popular — expect to see plenty of intense colours in fashion-forward homes this year. Look out for intriguing shapes, too, such as fish-scale, peacock, ogee, penny, diamond, kite and hexagon. • For a fresh, modern look, don’t tile using a traditional layout, but employ strong vertical patterns, herringbone or basketweave. This is a great way to make inexpensive tiles appear on-trend and expensive. • Very large-format tiles (even in a small room) can open up a space. The lack of grout lines allows the tiles themselves to really sing — and they’re easier to keep clean, too. • As an alternative to ceramic, porcelain or stone tiles, consider luxury vinyl tiles (known in the trade as LVT), an innovative type of vinyl flooring. The tiles are waterproof, warm and quiet underfoot, hardwearing and durable, and come in a wide range of patterns and effects.

Forget Me Not Friday Memory Café

On 5th January 32 members of

The Forget Me Not Friday Memory Café at Wickersley Methodist Church went to the pantomime. It was Dick Whittington at Sheffield City Hall performed by Manor Operatic Society. They went to the matinee performance and everyone had a lovely time; it’s so good to see everyone singing along and having a laugh. If all the café does is give members a few hours away from the cares and worries that are with them everyday, then they believe it’s worth their efforts. As they left the theatre members were saying “we are coming again next year aren’t we?!” On 10th January they were entertained in style by Andy Greaves, who is a ventriloquist, singer and comedian, much loved by members. The Forget Me Not Friday Memory Café at Wickersley Methodist Church welcomes anyone from Wickersley and the surrounding area who is living with dementia, and their carers, to join them for music, table games, crafts and much more. The café meets on the second Friday of each month at Wickersley Methodist Church, Bawtry Road S66 1JJ, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Here are the upcoming dates: • 14th February — Valentine’s Day – lots of activities including a film in the coffee lounge • 13th March — spring games session • 10th April — Easter parade For more information please email forgetmenotmemorycafe@gmail.com.

Rother Valley Retired Teachers Association

Tickhill Parish Room news

Even though it is now February,

we can still say Happy New Year! Although some resolutions will have gone by the board already — some may have stuck and become habits. Apparently, it takes quite a while before something new becomes a habit in your life so we must be patient with this. Some of our new ‘habits’ will be more pleasurable than others. For instance, deciding to learn to play the ukulele with Brett and Sarah on a Monday night at Tickhill Parish Room is a nice, pleasant ‘habit’, even if it takes a while. Yoga is another pleasant ‘habit’ which is helping keep our bodies fit and supple — but this may be harder than learning a musical instrument and a certain amount of hard work must go into it. Children need routine in their lives — we are told — to help them turn into well-rounded adults. They could start early with the Spanishtastic classes on a Tuesday, with Laura, and the Sounds Phonics classes on a Wednesday morning, with Jenny. Both are very popular classes at Tickhill Parish Room. Other new ‘habits’ to be practised in the Parish Room are as follows: • Every first Wednesday of the month sees the WI meeting at 2.00pm and the Francophiles group at 7.30pm. • Every third Wednesday of the month presents another film

choice for the Tickhill Film Society, February’s film being on the 19th with Bohemian Rhapsody. This is a marvellous film and should not be missed. Only £6.00 per visitor or £45.00 to join for a season. • Ongoing throughout the year are Oracle Soul Goddess Healing Circle meetings with Cat. A very pleasant ‘habit’ to think about starting is to call in for coffee every Saturday at the regular coffee morning. Meet your friends, make new ones and treat yourself to a hot drink and whatever tasty treat is on offer that day, be it scones or toasted teacakes or delicious (very often homemade) cake. If you feel you would like to volunteer to help at a coffee morning once in a while — please have a chat with Noreen Sweed. You can call her on 01302 743293 or pop in on a Saturday for a chat with her. Or call Janice Birkinshaw on 07590 455340. It could be one of your New Year’s Resolutions! For more details on the above events (or are they new ‘habits’ by now?!) or information on how to hire the lovely hall for your own event/function/fundraiser, call Janice on 07590 455340.

Rotherham Marie Curie Fundraising Group The Rotherham Marie Curie Fundraising Group is looking for more volunteers to join them as they raise money for the provision of end of life nursing care in and around Rotherham. The small group meets monthly at the Beefeater public house, Brecks, and the next meeting is on Friday 28th February at 2.00pm. You are most welcome to go along to the meeting, meet the friendly volunteers, and see how they organise their fundraising events. Between 9th and 15th March inclusive, the group will be collecting at the three Rotherham Morrisons stores (Bramley, Catcliffe and Parkgate). If you could offer to do a two-hour collection slot at any of the branches,

your help would really be appreciated as they struggle to cover from 9.00am to 5.00pm with so few volunteers. To apply please log in to the Marie Curie website, collections page, and enter your details online. Alternatively, you can telephone either Sue Pearson on 07944 654177 or Rebecca Bramley on 07525 392984 who will take your details and book you on a collecting slot. The group is also seeking more outlets to place collection tins throughout the year and daffodil boxes in March during the Great Daffodil Appeal. If you can help in any way, please email mariecurierotherham@gmail. com or call Sue Pearson on 07944 654177 for more information.

GOLDEN YEARS

Does it pay to plan ahead? According to the Money Advice Service (www.moneyadviceservice. org.uk) the average price of a funeral, even without optional items such as flowers and catering, is around £4,300. That’s not exactly small change for most people, and if you don’t make some kind of financial provision for your funeral, your children or close relatives may have to foot the bill. If you don’t believe there will be enough money in your estate to pay for a funeral when you die, and your relatives can’t afford to chip in, there are several options open to you. SIGN UP TO A PREPAID FUNERAL PLAN With a prepaid plan, you will choose the type of funeral you want (so long as it’s in the UK) then pay the funeral director or plan provider either in a lump sum, or in weekly instalments. The costs will be frozen at today’s prices from the moment the plan takes effect, which means the costs won’t be subject to inflation, but you should be aware that your plan may not provide everything you want. OVER 50S PLANS Although this is a form of insurance, there’s no requirement for medical underwriting. That means if you are 18 February 2020

Kate McLelland looks at planning funeral costs in poor health at the time of drawing up the plan it won’t affect the pay-out, provided you survive beyond the first two years of the plan’s start date. On the down side, once you’ve paid the money in, you won’t get it back and you risk losing the whole investment if you don’t keep up to date with payments. LIFE INSURANCE According to the consumer association Which?, life insurance could potentially pay out 40% more than an Over 50s plan. However the lump sum provided by life insurance can take several weeks to come through. The Association of British Insurers says that payments generally take about a month to arrive after a death, but they can take longer if the death needs investigation. GOVERNMENT-FUNDED FUNERAL PAYMENTS If the person responsible for arranging your funeral is receiving certain benefits, they can apply to the government for a Funeral Expenses Payment. The money offered will cover things such

as cremation fees or the cost of a particular burial plot, death certificates and other documents, but it is unlikely to cover the full cost of a funeral. SAVE UP WITH A BANK ACCOUNT You can always set up a separate bank account to pay for your funeral, paying in gradually to build up the amount you need, although there’s a risk that you might die before you accumulate your target sum. At your death, the money you’ve saved will be considered part of your estate, which means it won’t be released immediately to pay for your funeral costs. If you’ve been concerned about how you will pay for your funeral, the five options listed above should provide some comfort. Fortunately there’s lots more advice available from organisations such as the Money Advice Service and Citizens Advice. Finally, it always helps to discuss your plans with your family or close friends, as any arrangements made now could save them a lot of worry in future.

GOLDEN YEARS

Still working? It’s the ideal time to pick a retirement hobby

Retirement beckons, and with it the opportunity to do the things you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had time for. However, research by the Skipton Building Society has shown that we don’t always follow up on our dreams of an active retirement: apparently many of us start to feel bored and undervalued within just ten months of stopping work. According to the Age UK Index of Wellbeing in Later Life, the rate of our general wellbeing can increase by 20% if we simply engage with the world around us, whether that’s through social activities in the community, physical activities or creative pastimes. Finding the right hobby can help you make new friends and give you a sense of purpose, which ultimately benefits both your physical and mental health. But here are so many options, it’s often hard to know where to begin.

SOCIABLE HOBBIES Joining a choir can be one of the most rewarding ways to spend your leisure 22 February 2020

time. It’s estimated that a staggering 2.8 million Britons now belong to a choir, and recent research has shown that group singing is a particularly fast way to create social bonds — in other words, it’s a speedy short cut to making new friends. Other ways to meet people include volunteering at an animal shelter, joining a book or film club or local amateur dramatic society, helping at a charity shop, or starting a social media group such as a neighbourhood watch. HOME ALONE If you want something you can do at home, creative hobbies such as upcycling furniture, card-making or jewellery-making could be perfect. Get inspired by the speedy arts and crafts videos available on YouTube or scour charity shops and secondhand bookstores for cheap ‘how to’ books that can teach you a new skill. Buy vintage jigsaws and share the completed pictures with friends online, write poetry or short stories, take up knitting or baking or learn to fix up an old

car. Alternatively, find a pen pal in the UK or overseas with the help of clever phone apps that make it easy for you to chat to people all over the world. THE GREAT OUTDOORS Exercise is important for health. Whether you choose something like metal detecting (which you can do on your own) or Nordic walking (which you would normally do as part of a group), there are so many hobbies that encourage you to explore the great outdoors and get fit in the process. Fishing, trainspotting, birdwatching and amateur astronomy are also popular and will encourage you to get out and about in the open air. Although you may be tempted to put off choosing a hobby until you’ve finally finished work, the evidence suggests that it’s a good idea to have a plan in place. With a little preparation you should be able to walk out of work and straight into a life filled with exciting new possibilities.

#CervicalCancerPreventionWeek, the Be Cancer Safe Rotherham and Barnsley team were highlighting the importance of regular cervical screening, knowing how cervical cancer can be prevented and how you can reduce your risk. There are around 3,200 new cervical cancer cases in the UK every year, that’s around nine every day. Cervical screening is a method of preventing cancer by detecting HPV and treating abnormal cell changes in the cervix. 80% of us get HPV, so why is there so much stigma around the virus? The team have been smearing the myths and supporting the #SmearForSmear campaign to help @JoTrust share the facts. Visit www.jostrust.org.uk/ smearforsmear for further information. WHO CAN HAVE CERVICAL SCREENING? In the UK, if you are registered as a female with a GP surgery you are invited:

at school if aged 11 to 13 • If you miss having it in school, you can get it from your GP until you are 25 years old • Knowing where to find support and further information WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CERVICAL CANCER? There are some recognised symptoms associated with cervical cancer that you should be aware of, these include: • Abnormal bleeding: during or after sexual intercourse, or between periods • Post-menopausal bleeding: if you are not on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or have stopped it for six weeks or more • Unusual vaginal discharge • Discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse • Lower back pain

HOW YOU CAN REDUCE YOUR RISK OF CERVICAL CANCER? Be Cancer Safe want to ensure that all women and people with a cervix know how cervical cancer can be prevented. This means:

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms or are concerned about any new symptom you should make an appointment to see your GP as soon as possible. You should report these symptoms even if you have recently had cervical screening (smear test) that came back as normal. Remember, these symptoms can be associated with many other conditions that are not cancer related.

• Attending cervical screening when invited • Knowing the symptoms of cervical cancer and seeking medical advice if experiencing any • Take up the HPV vaccination

Remember — early detection and treatment can prevent 75% of cervical cancers developing! Follow Be Cancer Safe Rotherham and Barnsley on Facebook: @BeCancerSafeRB or Twitter: @BeCancerSafe_RB

• Every three years between ages 25 and 49 • Every five years between ages 50 and 64

Hilary James at the Beehive Folk Club

The guests for Beehive Folk

Club’s next folk evening on Friday 7th February at Harthill Village Hall will be Simon Mayor and Hilary James. It is an 8.00pm start. Take your own drinks. For information contact Peter Garratt on 0114 2352850 or garratt-p@sky.com. Simon Mayor is one of the world’s foremost mandolinists (and composers for the instrument) as well as being a witty and entertaining presenter. Regarded equally highly in classical and folk circles alike, his recordings and live performances have been applauded everywhere from BBC World Service (‘Winter with Mandolins’ was ‘recording of the week’) to the Classical Mandolin Society of America. His three-part series for BBC Radio 2, ‘Marooned with a Mandolin’, was described as ‘the best

Anyone for Cricket? American athlete Jackie

Joyner-Kelsee, who overcame severe asthma to win Olympic gold, silver and bronze in both heptathalon and high jump, said: “Age is no barrier (to sport), it’s the limitation you put on your mind”. There’s no doubt that advancing age limits physical prowess, but that’s no reason to close your mind to sport. Ideal for older people, walking sports are versions of games like football, cricket, or hockey that follow standard game rules, but where players walk instead of run. They provide the fun of the game without the strenuous pace and intense contact, which is perfect if you’re not as sprightly as you used to be. Even so, they’re no ‘walk in the park’. Keeping up with your opponents and their stop-start nature challenges both mind and body. Rotherham U3A would like to hear from men and women interested in

He has made the UK Classical Artist Chart Top Ten and his CD ‘Music from a Small Island’ was declared ‘folk album of the year’ in The Daily Telegraph. Hilary James is best known for her ‘elegant singing’ (The Daily Telegraph) which easily crosses the great musical divides from big band jazz to traditional ballads, blues and Berlioz. She is renowned too for an unlikely taste in bass instruments, including her amazing giant mandobass. A fine guitarist, she accompanies Simon on guitar on anything from a Vivaldi concerto to a Brazilian Tango, and may even manage a step dance if the wind is in the right direction. Her latest CD, ‘English Sketches’, received four star reviews in both The Sunday Times and The Scotsman and was one of the Sunday Times Critics Best Ten World Music Albums for 2011. You can visit her website at www.folksong.co.uk. forming one or more Walking Cricket teams. A team consists of six to eight players (three to four pairs). The game is played at walking pace, including the ‘runs’ and fielding, and a match lasts about two hours. A soft ball is used and it’s a year-round activity. Walking Cricket is a powerful, interesting and relaxed sport, enabling players to have fun and to enjoy regular, health-promoting exercise. Whether batting, bowling, or fielding, it increases heart rate, improves circulation, balance, physical and mental agility and hand-eye coordination. Contact Jim Walker on 01709 541067 for more details. If cricket doesn’t appeal, there are several other U3A activities providing a workout for the over-50s, ranging from various dancing groups through Tai Chi to Yogalates. Visit www.u3asites.org. uk/rotherham or contact Sylvia Duncan on 01709 374041 to find out more. 28th February from 10.00am to 12.00pm. All proceeds will go to the British Heart Foundation. Everyone is welcome.

GARDENS

Perfect potatoes… Mid to late February is ideal for

planting seed potatoes, an incredibly good-value crop. The so-called humble spud is a versatile vegetable with a flavour and texture that will make you want to grow them year after year. On a patio, balcony or in a backyard, a special potato-planting ‘bag’ or a 45cm diameter pot can produce a useful crop of spuds from a single tuber. Make sure the container is well-drained, fill it about half to twothirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further 5cm of compost. As the foliage appears, add more compost to cover and repeat until no more can be added. Keep the container well-watered and wait! Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to ‘chit’ or produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers, widest end uppermost, in a seed tray or old egg cartons placed in a cool, frost-free spot with plenty of natural light. They are ready for planting in a few weeks, when

34 February 2020

Pippa Greenwood turns out some tasty tubers the sprouts are about 1cm tall. To avoid the fungus-like organism responsible for potato blight (the cause of the Irish Famine in the 1840s) early varieties are better, but varieties with resistance to the infection are available. These include Valor, Lady Balfour or Colleen but Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona have the best resistance in my experience. Consider varieties such as Cara, Desiree or Sante if your garden is infested with slugs — again, earlies are likely to suffer less damage as they are not in the soil for so long. The biological control nematode Nemaslug can be used as a drench and, as it works under the soil surface, it has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife. Earlies are also ideal if space is at a premium and, as they are in the ground for less time, give you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop such as lettuce or salad leaves in the soil after the potatoes have been lifted.

WHAT VARIETIES TO BUY To help you decide what varieties to buy, think about how you most enjoy eating potatoes and follow my recommendations below: • Steamed potatoes — Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue or Lady Christl • New potatoes — Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Nadine or Nicola • Mash — Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour or King Edward • Jacket potatoes — Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree or Valor • Roast potatoes — Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi or Edzell Blue • Chips — Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster or Edzell Blue Choose early varieties for a newly created vegetable plot, especially if the soil has not been cultivated for several years. Earlies will be in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wireworm attack.

ENVIRONMENT

Stand aside, standby, you aren’t needed

Comedian Michael McIntyre

made fun of us all by pointing out that we often shut down appliances before going on holiday for safety reasons. Except the fridge because “we trust the fridge”. He has a point on the safety aspect, but we should also be considering the

OAK / HARDWOOD BULK BAG £75 OR 2 FOR £130

environmental one, and not just when we are on holiday. Leaving your devices on standby means you are spending good money warming the planet. Whilst switching a fridge off doesn’t make sense, here are a few things that do:

FREE DELIV ERY

within 25 mile s of Retford when you spend over £5 0 MIXED WOOD NET£3.50 THREE FOR £10 OAK NET £5 THREE FOR £12

According to MoneySuperMarket, the biggest standby power users are TVs, TV boxes (e.g. Sky/Virgin) and multiroom speakers. Chances are you only actually use them evening and weekends so waiting 60 seconds for them to restart isn’t much of a sacrifice. When you unplug your mobile phone after charging it, the charger is still using tiny amounts. When you multiply that by the number of people in the house, it’s not so tiny. So switch it off at the wall when you aren’t using it. Your router is something you want to have available pretty much all the time. But if you are going on two weeks holiday, a little holiday of its own won’t hurt. It’s quicker to put your PC on standby than to shut it down, but we are only saving seconds here. And we all know that it sometimes your PC wakes up, all by itself. There’s a device not to be trusted!

Smooth car control BEING SMOOTH The essence of a smooth drive is thinking ahead. Take in road conditions, terrain, hazards etc. and use the information to ensure you are in the correct gear, at the right speed for the conditions and are anticipating the actions of other drivers. DON’T DRIVE WITH THE BRAKES Sometimes, you have to go slower to go faster. ‘Driving with the brakes’ is a great example

40 February 2020

of this. Use your brakes to stop at traffic lights, but if you see brake lights come on ahead of you on the motorway, don’t go straight for the middle pedal. If you’ve maintained an adequate gap between you and the car in front, you have thinking distance. If the developing situation requires application of the brakes then, provided you’ve maintained an adequate gap between you and the car in front, you have time to apply the brakes gently.

What you won’t have done is contributed to the ‘pogo’ effect by instantly hitting the brakes when the lights in front come on. The first car may only apply them for two seconds but the ‘pogo’, working its way back down the queue of bunched-up traffic, means that the driver ten cars back has braked for five seconds and slowed to a crawl. The result is everyone is now going slower than if they had maintained an adequate gap and just lifted off a little.

First Drives: Volkswagen Crafter

Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz

“You can move a house with that mate,” the delivery driver smiles, as he hands over the keys to the green Volkswagen Crafter. “It’s just as well,” I reply, “because I’ve got loads of furniture to shift.” There’s no denying that it is a large vehicle, so large it fills the length of our top driveway and so wide that there is only just enough space to walk down the side of it. It’s always a little daunting going from driving a car to a van and even more so going to the Crafter because it just looks so huge. But the delight is that once behind the wheel it’s just like driving a car… without the rear view mirror — for the simple reason that you can’t see behind you. VW has got that covered though by fitting an extremely helpful reversing camera that feeds the image to the dash and really boosts the driver’s confidence. Reversing off the drive is a little awkward due to our neighbour’s car, as usual, being parked on the pavement outside but fortunately there’s enough space to my right to be able to overcome this problem. As long as you are sensible and consider the width of the Crafter then driving is a pleasurable experience. We arrive in Ringwood naively anticipating that only a couple of hours of heavy lugging will be required and we’ll be home for lunch. Wife Caroline agrees that we should park by the roadside and she spies a perfect spot, which happens to be directly under the window of the flat. So we park up and 42 February 2020

put a note in the windscreen for the traffic warden. I fold the driver’s wing mirror in to prevent it getting knocked. It takes a couple of minutes to walk from the van to the flat, negotiating slow electric gates every time, and walking up a staircase. We decide to move the largest item of furniture first, a sizeable six foot two door pine cupboard. It’s heavy and awkward. With care, a bit of thought and some heated discussions, we slowly make our way through the pokey flat, along the landing and down the stairs. We can then properly carry it on its side and eventually get to the van where we open the back right door first. I soon realise that I can push the door right back and it will helpfully hold itself open without smashing back into me. This is particularly handy as we are parked on a slope. It takes me a minute or so to figure out how to open the left hand door — there’s a black sort of lever on the inside of it that you move to do this. Again, push it out as far as possible and it holds itself open. Good design.

HISTORY

Thomas Rotherham

The college that bears his name © Thomas Rotherham College

© National Portrait Gallery

David Coldrick on one of Rotherham’s famous sons Rotherham has had some

famous sons and daughters including: England goalkeeper David Seaman, referee Howard Webb and actors such as Dean Andrews of ‘Life on Mars’ fame and Paul Shane, alias Ted Bovis, of Hi-de-Hi alongside nostalgic watercolour artist Margaret Clarkson. There are many more but none more famous in the traditional ‘history book’ sense than Thomas Rotherham. Who was he and what was his local legacy? Thomas was the son of Sir Thomas Rotherham of (you guessed it) Rotherham. He was born on Brookgate, now College Street between Westgate and All Saints Square, in 1423. He had a good tutor and went on to study at, newly established, ‘The Kings College of Our Lady of Eton by Windsor’ — or as we simply know it ‘Eton’. I don’t know what the fees were — probably less than the £15,000 or so a term they are now. Thomas went on to King’s College Cambridge to study Divinity. Like Eton, King’s was founded by Henry VI who was apparently a lover

44 February 2020

of ‘education, religion learning and research’ as well as being described as ‘timid’. He was unsuited to leading the nation in the continuing 100 Years War and at the start of the Wars of the Roses. He lost all of England’s French empire, apart from Calais, and also his mental faculties. He became unresponsive for a year and ultimately met a sad, violent, death during imprisonment in The Tower of London. After graduation Thomas climbed the slippery pole of a career in the Church, becoming Bishop of Lincoln in 1472 and Archbishop of York in 1500. He purchased Barnes Hall at Burncross in Sheffield. It’s unclear how much he visited. Edward IV appointed him to be Keeper of the Privy Seal — used to authenticate state documents — literally the stamp of Royal authority. He acted as ambassador to Burgundy — unfriendly to the French King and a great place to pick up some wine. In 1475 he became Lord Chancellor to Edward IV — the highest Officer of State. Typically, the Lord Chancellor was the Royal Chaplain and key adviser to the King in spiritual and state matters. Thomas Rotherham certainly ‘mattered’. When Edward died in 1483 Thomas worked with dowager Queen

Elizabeth Woodville, to protect child heir Edward V from the infamous Richard of Gloucester who ultimately bumped off young Edward and seized the throne. Thomas had handed over the Seal to Elizabeth, not Richard, and was fired and imprisoned accordingly. After a brief return to the Lord Chancellorship, Henry Tudor, who defeated the delightful Richard at Bosworth, not very gently, nudged Thomas into retirement. In retirement Thomas founded ‘The College of Jesus’ in Rotherham as a free school for boys by which to remember his old tutor by on College Street. He died of plague near York in 1500 and his tomb is at York Minster. Although the College was sized by the Crown in 1550 its teaching work continued though now as the Grammar School which was, in turn, effectively incorporated into Thomas Rotherham College in 1967. It is quite something to have a local and national legacy lasting over 500 years. He was definitely ‘made in Rotherham’!
