Welcome! Welcome to the August edition of Rotherham Life magazine.
We’ve finally reached August and the school holidays have begun — the key focus of the month if you’ve got children in the family. We often look through rose-tinted glasses and see a time for some rest, recuperation and socialising with friends and family. Though, if you’re anything like me, I am already feeling the pressure of juggling work, parenting and socialising. If you are looking for things to do this month, then you’ll find lots of ideas in our Summer Days Out guide. Clifton Park Museum’s latest exhibition — Wow Said The Owl — is open over the summer. Based on the much-loved children’s book, the family friendly exhibition has lots of sensory and interactive elements. Children are also invited to be creative at a series of workshops during the holidays. Amid, all the busy-ness, don’t forget to make some time
David Coldrick on the importance of keeping a perspective on life
for yourself — something I need to prioritise. Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy and we have an article this month which will encourage us all to sit back and appreciate the here and now. We’ve also got some book recommendations which will inspire you to lose yourself in a good book. More active ideas inside the magazine may be baking or creating new planting opportunities in your garden. Alternatively, join the Rotherham African Drummers (pictured above). Let’s all vow to do something for ourselves this month… I’ll report back in the next edition. Don’t forget to visit our website, www.rotherhamlife. com, over the summer as we’ll keep adding new events to our calendar and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for daily updates.

Why doctors are prescribing Mindfulness Alison Runman looks at the trend of personal awareness Mindfulness has gone
from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about? Mindfulness is: • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment — both physical sensations and emotions. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling and what sparked these thoughts and emotions. HOW IT CAN HELP Today, many of us rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ and missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting. “It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier and begin to see patterns, recognising those that aren’t helpful. This can make it easier to prevent them overwhelming you or leading you into a spiral of negative emotions or actions that make the situation worse.
8 August 2019
We can all benefit from mindfulness, but it’s now officially recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to prevent depression in people who’ve had three or more bouts, and is increasingly recommended by doctors for helping with chronic conditions or pain, as well as stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging evidence that it can ease insomnia, too. PRACTISING MINDFULNESS The NHS recommends: • Noticing the everyday and trying something new — notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or
going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way. • Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings — “Mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams.“Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.” Identify them. “That’s my worry about my Dad’s health.” “I’m stressed because I’ve got a really busy week.” By being aware of your fears and concerns, you’re more likely to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the thing they’re about. • Freeing yourself from the past and future — realising that worries about the past or future can dominate, stopping you from enjoying the now. If you realise you’ve been reliving or pre-living negative experiences for several minutes, take a moment to focus yourself in the present, appreciating the day and the moment you’re living now. • Taking time out — ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, focusing on your breathing and your body and bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. This could be at home or while travelling. Find the time and place most convenient and helpful for you. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www.bemindfulonline. com, or you can find a local teacher at www.bemindful. co.uk/learn-mindfulness.

Church coffee morning
Going for a song
Millions of Britains have never been to the opera, saying: “it’s too posh and too long”. People outside the stockbroker belt may also add: “too far; too expensive”. Discounting Buxton, Leeds and Manchester opera houses, which intersperse opera with musicals and concerts, the nearest venue dedicated entirely to opera is in Leicestershire. Last available statistics show just 3.7% of adults in England had been to an opera between 2016 and 2017. David Styers’ review of ‘Opera for Dummies’, describes opera as: “weird”, with highly made-up men playing women, women playing men, middle-aged performers playing adolescents, singing throughout generally in a foreign language. Main characters are killed off and whilst dying, take ten minutes to
Wickersley Methodist Church
will hold their next charity coffee morning on Friday 23rd August, from 10.00am to 12.00pm. Proceeds raised go to the church funds. On offer will be bacon and sausage sandwiches and tea and coffee refreshments. There will be various stalls including a cake and a plant stall. Everyone is welcome and the organisers would love to see you there to support the church.
Friends in Harmony Friends in Harmony have ended their season with a ‘Goodbye to spring, hello to summer’ concert, held in Wickersley Methodist Church. A sell out audience was entertained with a medley of songs from ‘Les Miserables’, ‘A Concert Celebration’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber, music by The Beatles, Duke Ellington and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Soloists were Rosie Thickett (mezzo soprano) and Gary Baldwin (tenor). The evening raised £870, thank you to everyone who made the event possible. 10 August 2019
sing about it. In spite of this, opera can be breathtakingly beautiful. Never mind the language: the soaring voices convey the meaning. Who hasn’t experienced goosebumps listening to Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma (none shall sleep) or Maria Callas’ Un Bel Di (one fine day)? As for the plots, many are real life stories and have informed other books, plays and films. So it is with La Traviata, based on Dumas’ semi-autobiographical story Camille. In the nineties, the same storyline was adapted for the films Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge. La Traviata is the Rotherham U3A’s opera group’s choice for their first meeting of the season. The curtain rises at 1.30pm and falls at 4.30pm at Rotherham Unity Centre on Tuesday 10th September. Nonmembers wondering if opera is for them are welcome to attend this and one other free ‘taster’ session. The atmosphere’s friendly and informal, it’s not posh, and it’s local. Find U3A groups and activities at www.u3asites.org.uk/ rotherham or call 01709 374841.

your ultimate destination, taking an indirect flight can save you money, particularly in the case of long-haul journeys. It does cost you more in time, however, so this may not appeal to everyone. AVOID THE ADDED FLIGHT EXTRAS Flight extras such as extra legroom, on-board meal, and additional luggage allowances, add a considerable sum to your ‘cheap’ flight if you’re not careful. Some airlines include these elements in the advertised price but beware if you are using a budget operator, as they may be added extras.
Quick and easy ways to save money on your summer holiday Summer holidays provide
much-needed rest and relaxation in the middle of our oftenbusy year, and may even be considered essential to our health and wellbeing. They do not need to cost the earth, but how can you save money without detracting from the enjoyment of this precious time away? Here are a few tips to free up some extra spending money for this year’s holiday, or cash to put towards your getaway next year. NEGOTIATE ON PRICE It is possible to negotiate down your holiday price, particularly if it’s last minute. Tour and hotel 16 August 2019
operators are likely to be open to negotiation if it means they can fill the last few places on a tour, or the remaining empty airline seats. CHOOSE YOUR TRAVEL TIMES CAREFULLY The times you travel can directly influence price so if you are able to fly during the night, for example, you may be able to save some money. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are said to be less popular for travelling when compared with Fridays and over the weekend, so if you can go midweek it might be worth it. DO YOU NEED TO FLY DIRECT? If you don’t need to fly directly to
COMBINE AIRPORT HOTEL AND PARKING If you are travelling early in the morning or from an airport a long way from home, you may need to stay in an airport hotel the night before. If so, you can save money by combining the accommodation costs with car parking for the duration of your holiday. TRAVEL WHILE YOU SLEEP Travelling while you sleep is a great way to make savings on the cost of your holiday. Whether you are starting your journey by train, coach or cross-channel ferry, overnight travel using these methods can be considerably cheaper than booking a hotel for the night. INDEPENDENT EXCURSIONS The cost of excursions can be eyewatering, especially for a family, so try organising your own days out to save money. You may be able to buy admission tickets to attractions and events before you go on holiday, and by booking transport locally you will have a truly authentic experience. Going to different places and enjoying new experiences are life-affirming, and can be more affordable than you think. Summer berry sponge puddings Smothered with warm berry compote, these delicious lemony sponge puddings will go down a treat after a Sunday roast. Serve with a dollop of crème fraiche or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. INGREDIENTS • 115g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 225g caster sugar • Zest of a lemon • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 125g self-raising flour, sifted • 1tbsp milk TASTY TOP TIP You can replace the fresh berries with the same amount of frozen mixed berries, if liked. 18 August 2019
• 300g mixed summer berries such as redcurrants, blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants • 2tsp arrowroot blended with 1tbsp cold water METHOD • Thoroughly grease four 175ml pudding basins with butter. Preheat the oven to 190°c / fan 170°c / gas mark 5. • Place the butter and 115g of the sugar in a bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Beat in the lemon zest then gradually beat in the eggs, adding 1tbsp of the flour if the mixture starts to curdle. Fold in the rest of the flour with the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. • Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated buttered foil,
scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a large roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until risen and firm to the touch. • Meanwhile, place the berries in a pan with the remaining sugar and 2tbsp water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for five to six minutes until the fruit has softened. Stir in the blended arrowroot and simmer, stirring all the time, for another four to five minutes until thickened. • Turn the hot puddings out onto serving plates and spoon over the warm fruit compote. Serve immediately.

Miranda at Firbeck
Miranda Sykes, the acclaimed singer and bassist with awardwinning folk powerhouse Show of Hands, is returning to her roots with a show at Firbeck Village Hall on Friday 20th September. After a career spanning over 20 years, during which time she has played with many of the top musicians and singers within the folk world, she is touring as she first started out: one woman, one bass, and one guitar. Building on the success of her Borrowed Places tour, Miranda Sykes is back with a completely new project: Behind The Wall. Where Borrowed Places opened a window into the past, explaining where she had been, physically and
spiritually, Behind The Wall is a roller coaster ride, exploring where we are going; Miranda, you, me, all of us. What does it mean to be human today, living in our communities and societies and where will our actions lead us? Powerful and hard-hitting but also poignant and beautiful, this show gives us all a chance to reflect and maybe even empower us. A good read LEISURE
Pull up your sun lounger, pour yourself an ice-cold drink and lose yourself in a good book. THE FARM Joanne Ramos Golden Oaks farm doesn’t grow tomatoes, wheat or potatoes. It grows babies. The surrogate mothers (Hosts) are paid to incubate their rich clients’ embryos. While at Golden Oaks, they have to adhere to strict rules, from giving up their phones to following a diet. The Farm is told from the viewpoint of four women: Jane and Reagan are two of the hosts, while Mae is the brains behind the lucrative business. Ate is Jane’s cousin. The Farm is thoughtprovoking and topical, but above all it’s a fantastic page-tuner of a story.
LITTLE DARLINGS Melanie Golding Lauren is convinced someone is planning to abduct her newborn twins, so when they go missing it seems her fears were justified. But when the twins are found, Lauren is convinced they’re not hers. Have they been swapped for changelings like she believes, or is Lauren suffering from post-partum psychosis? Is she the only one who can save the babies, or is she the one who’s putting them in danger? A chilling page-turner that keeps you guessing. VEGAN ONE POUND MEALS Miguel Barclay This book proves that vegan food can be as delicious, easy and
inexpensive as it is healthy. There are twists on classic dishes, such as ‘artichoke paella’, ‘cashew pesto pasta’ and ‘tomato tarte tatin’, along with plenty of original dishes, such as ‘kimchi tacos’ and ‘sticky aubergine bao’. Most only use a handful of ingredients and all work out at around £1.00 per portion. Recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a mouth-watering image. THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ Heather Morris If you haven’t yet read the biography of Lale Sokolov, summer could be the perfect time as you’ll want the time to digest this book in peace. Lale was imprisoned in Auschwitz from 1942 and put to work tattooing the other prisoners. During his time at Auschwitz, Lale witnessed both the brutality of the human race, and its appetite for kindness, self-sacrifice and hope. While The Tattooist of Auschwitz is at times harrowing, it is also a love story. A must-read.

driver-assisting safety aids, such as collision avoidance systems. I don’t hold with diehards who say it takes away some of the skill of driving, promotes an over-reliance on technology and thus responsibility for a driver’s actions. After all, if you take this argument to its conclusion, a brake light is a driver aid, is it not? But my caution in the reliance of these systems comes from the question of how well they will continue to perform on second- and third-hand cars.
28 August 2019
Anecdotal evidence, from a garage-owning colleague, shows that many second-owner luxury cars that come in for an electrical fault are often exhibiting serious issues with the other electronic systems. Faulty AC is one thing, faulty ABS quite another. It’s accepted that parts will wear-out on any mechanicalelectronic device. However, should brake pads wear and lose their effectiveness, a driver will still apply them. But, for example, a

faulty collision avoidance system may not apply the brakes at all, whilst the driver makes no attempt to brake manually. Aviation technology has reached a point where aircraft electronic systems could well do a better job than the pilot, but airlines still have a couple up front, just in case. Car safety technology is great and makes a big contribution to accident avoidance, but just like the airline pilot, a driver still needs to be there, just in case.

First Drives: Honda Civic “Where’s the gearstick?” I panic as I sit in the driver’s seat of the Honda Civic 1.6 diesel. “You don’t need a gearstick,” says my son Henry (aged three). He knows about these things. This automatic version has an exceedingly minimalist nine speed automatic unit that takes a short while to get used to. Honda always seems to develop new and inspired futuristic design features that others follow years later. Of course, that design is also extremely aerodynamic, aiding efficiency. Look in the boot and there’s a sliding parcel shelf and there’s lots of digital jiggery pokery on the dashboard, some of which shows it reaching 80mpg during the test, encouraging economical driving. I’ve just had a week with the considerably wider Jaguar E-Pace that felt quite clumsy in comparison to the smaller Honda. I also found the Jag’s interior to be very dark. Not so in the Civic, where there’s a generous electric tilt/slide glass roof. Another surprise for me is that the Civic is lower to the ground than my wife’s Vauxhall Corsa and feels very sporty as a consequence. It certainly doesn’t feel like a five-door family hatchback and is completely different to the last Civic model it replaces. It is finished in eye-catching Brilliant Sporty Blue Metallic and while the front certainly demands your attention, I cannot help but feel that the angular front bumper could age quite quickly in this fashion conscience world we live in. Just before I embark on a journey to Kent, I must drop my wife off at the library to return a few books. After doing this
Tim Saunders finds a Honda that proves that diesel isn’t quite dead yet there’s a persistent bleeping from the sensors alerting me to something that it does not like — it tells me it’s underneath the car, but this clearly is not the case — as we make our way out of the car park. I don’t need this aggravation at the best of times and certainly not in a vehicle with which I am unfamiliar. It finally stops as I leave the car park. Perhaps the cars were all too near the sensors and it didn’t like it. I don’t know. Thankfully this experience does not repeat itself during my week with my sporty red friend and things quickly improve. I am determined to stick to the speed limits as we head down the M27 towards the A3 and the intelligent cruise control really helps me as it rigidly adheres to the 50mph limits often in place these days. Just as well too, because we count some 17 police vehicles, many unmarked whipping down the outside lane after speeding motorists, providing my back seat passengers with plenty of entertainment. It is only when I have been driving for a couple of hours that I realise the seat is a little high compared to my wife’s. Lowering the driver’s seat provides a much better driving position. Now it really does feel like a sports car. I begin to like it very much.

Church & Country Fair round up New singers for Ryton Chorale
Would you like to be part of a choir
singing great choral music? Would you like to have the opportunity to sing in a choir with an experienced and dynamic conductor? Joining Ryton Chorale would provide a ‘yes’ answer to both questions. On Monday 16th September, you can go along to an open singing evening, at Holy Family School, Netherton Road, Worksop, at 7.30pm. Why not give the choir a try and join the rehearsal of Messiah? There is no charge for the evening and the choir are looking forward to welcoming you.
Wickersley CI Bowling Club
Prior to the start of the new bowling
season, members of Wickersley CI Bowling Club held a coffee morning and plant sale to raise funds for a cancer charity. All plants were donated by the club’s green fingered bowlers and cakes and pastries especially made for the day by lady members. The enthusiasm generated by members ensured that the event was a huge success and many asked for a repeat next year. A total of £300 was raised.
Braithwell Church and Country Fair took place on Saturday 8th June. Although the sun was hiding from the rain, the event was a shining example of true British spirit. The not-so-kind weather, whilst challenging, pulled everyone together and gave a clear demonstration of people’s kindness, support and devotion. The organisers would like to thank everyone who attended, helped and contributed. Without all of these combined efforts this loved traditional and much lookedforward-to event, enjoyed by locals and visitors from far further afield, would simply be unable to continue. Over £2,630 was raised. The grand draw prizes have all been claimed. The date has already been set for

Add some vertical interest
Whatever the size or shape of your garden, it will benefit from having some height added to it — and what better way to do this than with an arch or arbour? And, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too… Position an arbour to overlook a good view or attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. An arch or an arbour can divide your garden into one or more rooms, a trick that makes your garden seem larger and more interesting. Chosen carefully, arches and arbours are good looking and a feature in their own right, and if you clothe them with climbers you are adding to their appeal. Plus, those climbers with the added ingredient of scent, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden with their wafting perfume. The area around an arbour in a 34 August 2019
Pippa Greenwood on installing a vertical structure in your garden to make a new planting opportunity sunny spot with fairly free-draining soil can be planted with lavenders, so you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves after a stressful day. In sunny positions, plant thymes or camomile as a lawn on the approach to your archway or arbour; a fantastic aroma will be released when your feet gently crush the plants. Arches and arbours are available in a range of materials, with wood and metal being the most popular, both of which I find fit in with my gardening style. In these materials you can transform them with wood stains or paints to a bright blue, rich red or any colour you fancy! An arch or an arbour can be constructed from scratch, but there is a wide range of ready-made arbours and kits for both arches and arbours available. If you choose
wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either naturally going to resist decay — western red cedar or a hardwood such as oak would be my preference, followed by Douglas fir or larch. Alternatively you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressure-treated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper. By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this more rustic look fits well in an informal garden. Many wooden arches are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. To find out what’s available, visit several local garden centres or take a look at mail-order products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier!

Botanical beauty Whether you prefer
small succulents or a giant monstera, use plants and foliage to add a natural touch to your home.
38 August 2019
BRING NATURE INDOORS • Shades of green are very on-trend and provide a lovely background for displays of plants. They are easy to live with and combine wonderfully with whites and off-whites, as well as natural materials such as timber, stone and linen. • Botanical-themed wallpaper and fabrics can be beautiful but quite overwhelming. If you prefer to keep the look relatively subtle, choose small-scale or delicate prints in shades of green and neutrals for background interest. • To make an impact with a display of real botanicals, choose large plants and position in strategic places, as you would a sculpture. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth centurystyle paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.

Keeping things in perspective Whatever you think of Donald Trump, saint or sinner, and his recent state visit there was one in 1978 involving a far less lovely character. The Wilson-Callaghan Labour government in its, not very infinite, wisdom invited the brutal Romanian Communist Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena over for full state honours. It was hoped Romania would buy lots of planes from cash strapped Britannia. Comrade Nicolae was duly welcomed and even given a nice puppy by liberal party leader Jeremy Thorpe. Was there a happy ending? The poor labrador was appointed to a senior rank in the Romanian army whilst Thorpe was accused of attempted murder and killing Norman Scot’s great Dane, Rinka. Callaghan was beaten by Margaret Thatcher at the 1979 general election. The Ceausescus were executed on Christmas Day 1989 for looting Romania and genocide. The ‘dear leader’ was posthumously stripped of the Order of the Bath and added to the official list of world leaders who were not very good at socialism. As for the Queen? She probably felt a teensy bit let down by her government. The rest of us barely noticed anything. Keeping things in their true perspective is important. Romania under Ceausescu was a case in point. He banned contraception, abortion (even for very sick mothers) and taxed the childless. A surging birth rate resulted in 500,000 babies being abandoned in orphanages. Romania was bankrupt and they were subjected to drug use, sexual abuse and gross neglect. Children with HIV, caught through the use of unsterilized medical instruments, and those with disabilities were abominably treated. Many people across South Yorkshire and the UK watched this horrific revelation on TV reacting by giving money and aid. Some of us embarked on aid trips crossing Europe in little convoys 40 August 2019
David Coldrick on the importance of keeping calm and maintaing a perspective on life of white vans. I doubt this was an ‘optimal solution’. But it helped give insight into the enormous scale of the issues and opened two-way communication. Sometimes you just have to actually ‘do something practical’, if you can. Local companies, such as the then Hazlewood Foods, (now part of Greencore) off Mansfield Road, also gave generously — it was a team effort, now largely forgotten. We had several mini adventures, including those due to a colossal bypass of parental imagination in the 1940s. Four out of five of our drivers were called Brian. One orphanage languished in the middle of nowhere. It was pitch black on arrival one evening. It was run by very elderly ladies, dressed in blue, carrying large sticks. There was no proper heating or sanitation. Disabled children were locked away separately,
often kept in large cots — many rocking backwards and forwards, seemingly forgotten. The children were all delighted to see us. I hope we made some sort of difference. The numbers in orphanages have mercifully declined since. It is easy, in our rather divided times, to forget that we have probably ‘seen it all before’ though maybe in a different guise. Things have often been worse or still are elsewhere. ‘Keep calm and carry on’ is a good motto for helping us maintain our perspective. Cleethorpes comes to Newman School
The sea was nowhere near
Newman School on Friday 21st June, but there were plenty of waves: waves of sheer delight as the pupils played in the sand and enjoyed the wide range of seaside activities, thoughtfully organised by the school staff. There were waves of good feeling and happiness as pupils, parents, teachers and carers mingled and interacted.
For most of the time, the sun shone and mid-morning ice cream helped to create a holiday feeling. Catherine Bridge, teacher and Rotarian kept a relaxed but careful eye on the proceedings. The other Rotarians present were, Trish Lister, Chris Croker, John Walton with daughter Clare and Phil Crutchley. Peter Short arrived just in time for the fish and chips!
Ivy Cottage, 16 The Crofts
Ivy Cottage was built in 1634 by
the Feoffees of the Common Lands of Rotherham, to house the workhouse master and the town workhouse. At the time the poor were helped by a mixture of outdoor and indoor relief and remained in their homes; if their circumstances were more severe, or they were homeless, they had to move to the workhouse to receive indoor relief and do work to try to improve their situation. The workhouse could accommodate just over 20 people. The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 changed all of that, when outdoor relief was abolished and whole families were moved to the workhouse if they were too poor to live without support. Rotherham was compelled to build a huge new ‘union workhouse’ for as many as
300 people. Ivy Cottage was put up for sale in 1839 and soon after its furniture was sold at auction. Ivy Cottage was listed Grade II in 1950, because at that time a reasonable amount of the original 17th century structure probably survived. However, an inspection carried out in October 1989, revealed that the building suffered extensive and damaging modern alterations. Consequently, it was felt to no longer fulfil the listing criteria and was removed from the statutory list. The property became a private dwelling when the union workhouse opened on Alma Road in 1839 and a dental practice from 1901. Ivy Cottage is a historic building highlighted by Rotherham District Civic Society.

Out in the Atlantic Ocean, this is the largest island in the Azores, a colourful place blooming year round but set precariously at the meeting point of three tectonic plates: Eurasian, African and North American. Bristling with dormant craters and cones, laced in waterfalls, hot springs and lakes, it’s truly awesome but these volcanic wonders hold every visitor spellbound. North-west of Ponta Delgada, the capital, a road winds up into the hills fringed in wild gladioli, hydrangea and agapanthus. The coastal scenery is delightful but turning inland you soon reach the ‘Royal Belvedere’, where in 1901 Dom Carlos looked down on the twin lakes of Sete Cidades. Framed by verdant slopes, connected by a narrow strait, they spread across the crater of a dormant volcano, their lovely colours reflecting the ever-changing light, one lake as blue as the sky, the other turquoise and green. Meadows shimmer along the shore and beyond the slender bridge, the pretty town greets you with cottage gardens, bandstand
São Miguel and church. According to legend, the lakes were created by rivers of tears when a shepherd and his beloved princess parted on the hilltop. At the heart of the island, at 575m, Fire Lake claims the purest water. In clear weather, vantage points along the road reveal some stunning views, but in its pristine nature reserve the lake can only be reached down a steep trail. The hike along the shore is challenging at times but gorgeous, with luminous water, sandy coves, scrubland and forest, cliffs and the crater rim rising towards the sky. Meanwhile on the northern slope, the hot springs of Caldeira Velha nestle among giant ferns and towering trees, nature in the raw almost like a Jurassic Park draped in red rocks and steaming water. An iron-rich waterfall tumbles down into the upper pool, pleasantly warm, but the lower pool reaches a tingling 36°c. It’s the perfect way to relax
after exploring the nearby trails. In the luxuriant hills in the southeast, Furnas has its own geothermal gems. Down by the village, a stream meanders orangy-red through mud springs and bubbling pools where you hear the ‘Devil’s Heartbeat’ while mini-geysers pop all around. Then head for the landscaped gardens of Terra Nostra with its walking trails and bathing pools of different temperatures, most amazing the circular lagoon near the entrance, so large it rarely feels crowded. The orange water is likely to colour your skin but before you shower, take time to enjoy its health-giving minerals. A short drive away, the crater lake boasts a romantic beach with glistening water and a few pedal boats but you soon smell the fumaroles puffing relentlessly at the foot of the hill. The locals love them: want to cook your Sunday lunch or a festival feast? No problem; just set your pot in the ground, cover it up, and a few hours later the tasty ‘cozido’ stew is ready to share with family and friends.
