LEISURE

The Dad factor

W

here did Fathers’ Day come from? That was the question asked in the pub a couple of months ago. “Ruddy greetings card companies invented it” came the reply, and this seemed to be the general consensus. Back at home I wondered whether Fathers’ Day really was just the product of a boardroom meeting at Hallmark, so I set out to investigate. While it seems there is evidence of a Babylonian boy named Elmesu, carving some sort of greeting on a clay tablet 4000 years ago wishing his father health and long life, I don’t think we can say Fathers’ Day started there — mostly because that’s pretty much it for the evidence until about 100 years ago. The most common theory about modern Fathers’ Day is that it originated in the US, and with one particular lady, a Mrs Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. She felt that just as we dedicate a special day to mothers, so we should do the same for fathers. 8 Retford

│ Jun 2011

Jayne Deakin delves into the murky past of Fathers' Day

It meant a lot to her, because she and her siblings were raised in a loving manner by her own father after her mother died in childbirth. So she began a campaign, and the first Fathers’ Day was held on June 19th — her father’s birthday — in 1910. It grew in popularity and in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring that the third Sunday in June would be Fathers’ Day. Now the waters become murky. How did Fathers’ Day make the leap across the Atlantic? No-one seems to know, but it’s likely that — in the manner of other American traditions — it gradually seeped into the British consciousness. Greetings cards manufacturers definitely played their part though. Never ones to miss a trick, they began producing cards and we bought them. It seems that in the UK, Fathers’

Day really took off in the 1970s but, unlike in the US, it’s never been declared an ‘official’ day. Still, as traditions go it’s a nice one. Fathers often get bad press, and some of them quite justifiably so, but surely that doesn’t mean the good ones should go unrecognised. The role of dads has changed a lot in a generation. Most now take on a substantial amount of child care and are much more hands-on than their own dads were. Research shows that dads who are involved in day-to-day childcare are key figures in helping their children develop good selfesteem and self-confidence. Their rough-play helps children learn a sense of control and independence. Crucially, dads who get involved when their children are young, are much more likely to stay involved and in touch if their marriage breaks down. Dads are important, so let yours know how much you love him this Fathers’ Day.

Cystic Fibrosis Trust Charity Ball

Everton Players

he Barnes Boys Ball — in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust — takes place on Saturday 29th October 2011 at Aston Hall, near Worksop. If any persons or businesses are able to donate items or prizes for a raffle and auction on the evening, this would be most appreciated. We’re also looking for any local businesses who would consider sponsoring any part of the evening in return for free publicity attached to the Event. The night includes a Drinks Reception, followed by a three-course meal, a raffle, an auction, and brilliant entertainment provided by Samantha Fox and supported by The Stormbreakers. Tickets are £60 each and discounts available for tables of 10 plus. More information can be found on the boys website www.thebarnesboys. org.uk or 07977 097652.

ased in the small Nottinghamshire village of Everton, the Village Players have an enviable reputation for the quality of their productions and attract members from Retford, Worksop, Doncaster and surrounding villages and audiences from an even wider area. The group is now looking for new members, both for acting and backstage roles. “We have a selection of excellent plays that we should like to stage, but our choices have been limited by the availability of actors for key roles” explains Players Chairman David Bardsley. “We would really welcome new members to help us tackle some more challenging productions — we will shortly be casting our October production, so there will

be some early opportunities.” The Players — formed in 1979 — stage three major productions a year and have successfully tackled a wide variety of plays, from Shakespeare to Pinter, Ayckbourn to Alan Bennett. In addition they write and produce their own murder mystery evenings and organise theatre trips, play readings and other events for members. They also have a youth section, which will be performing dances and songs at Everton’s ‘Flowers for Four Parishes’ event on Everton Sports Field on Sunday 19th June. More details about the Players are on their web site www.evplayers.org.uk. Anyone interested in joining the Players should contact the secretary, Jane Bardsley, on 01777 818833, or email ev.players@tinyonline.co.uk.

Does my house look good in this? HOMES

I

wrote about this topic last year, but thought the subject needed another airing with a few updates. With the market continuing to be tough in 2011 — and with buyers in short supply — one thing agents can do is ensure that every single one of their properties is not only priced right, but is presented to the highest standard. Well that’s what you’d think, yet some agents it seems, are still letting the side down! Estate agents have a bad enough name as it is and no wonder, when you look at how some agents present their properties. Bad spelling, bad grammar and rubbish photos — it still astonishes me when I look at some of the basic mistakes that estate agents make! Presentation is one of the key elements of selling any property, whether it’s a cosy two-bed terrace or a lovely four-bed detached home. An Englishman’s home is his castle, and vendors want to see their property shown in its best light. So why do agents still make their jobs even more difficult than necessary by not getting it right in the first place? Correct spelling and grammar are a must! ‘Detatched’, ‘three-story’, ‘acommodation’ — as an agent I always have a chuckle to myself when I see my

12 Retford

│ Jun 2011

Darrin Carter on making your house look it's best for the market competitors basic spelling mistakes on their details and adverts. It only takes five minutes to perform a spell check and proof read property particulars before they are sent off to the internet. Similarly, most local papers send a proof back to the agent before printing, so why are there still mistakes on the finished advert? No wonder the grammar aint no good on details if they can't get the spelling right innit! The internet is now the estate agents shop window — it’s where 99% of buyers see the property for the first time. With this in mind and with agents wanting their properties to stand out from the competition, you would think that time would be taken to ensure that all the photos are helping to create more interest in the property. So why do we continually see wheely bins, unmade beds, cluttered surfaces and toilet seats left up! For goodness sake, move those unsightly multi-coloured bins from the front of the house to get the best shot, and why not help the vendor clear those kitchen tops

before you click away. I have never had a seller complain that I want to move a few things before I take the shot, and when they see the finished article they will thank you for taking the time to get it right. Seriously though, let’s look at the implications of getting it wrong and the benefits of getting it right. What confidence is the seller going to have in their newly appointed agent if they have to get their red pen out and circle all the typo errors on the property details? In addition, how are they going to feel when they look at the photos on the internet, and think they could have done better themselves? Not a good start, ay? Conversely if they receive properly proof read details, with punchy benefit statements — there’s another article topic — and well taken photos, you have started the relationship on the right footing. There’s a well used training phrase ‘Preparation prevents poor performance!’ Make sure your agent takes that extra time to cross the Ts and dot the Is! Your property will be professionally presented and you will not only be doing yourself a favour, but your estate agent too!

The festival is held inside a marquee with the bands taking to a main stage boasting a state of the art sound and lighting system. To capture that real festival vibe, there’s also a secured area with a variety of food stalls, face painting and other activities such as surfing. This year though not only can you get to see lookalike bands who sound amazing, but you may just also get the chance to become a lookalike yourself thanks to a competition run by the Fake Faces agency. To enter, simply make sure you’re at the festival before 2.00pm dressed as a lookalike, complete an application form and have some photos taken. A photographer will then choose the best entry and the winner will not only be taken onto the agency’s books, but also grab themselves some free drinks. For further information about the festivals and to order early bird tickets, please visit www.fakefestivals.co.uk. 16 Retford

aturday 7th May saw the Idle Valley Nature Reserve (North Road, Retford), open its reception and car park facilities to the general public seven days a week; another major milestone in the development of Retford’s biggest hidden jewel and the county’s largest nature reserve. The support from local people was evident in the attendance figures, a number of local people who visited the reserve for the first time were amazed at the quality of the facilities, the ingenuity of the activities for children and the sheer scale of the nature reserve which is over 450 hectares and still growing. Erin McDaid, Communications Manager for the Wildlife Trust said, “The event went extremely well and we had tremendous feedback from visitors, many of whom were visiting the Idle Valley for the first time. “Now that the facilities are open every day, we look forward to

welcoming many more people to the nature reserve so that they can enjoy the wildlife that is on their doorstep.” During the event, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust also welcomed the support of the Nottinghamshire Police Authority Motorcycle OffRoad Team who explained their role in deterring the use of illegal

off-road bikes and how the visibility of the Police Team in rural areas has consistently been given positive feedback from residents. The Café is open at weekends and a varied program of courses, events and activities are scheduled for the rest of the year. For more details about these and other educational and volunteering opportunities, contact the Idle Valley Team on 01777 713945 or call in at the centre. Further details about the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, including opening times, can be found at www. nottinghamshirewildlife. org.

Play Forum

of recent budget cuts. The Bassetlaw Play Forum, a long established children’s charity, is fighting to remain open and to continue to provide widespread opportunities for children of all ages. Historically we were largely funded by grant aid through the local authority but we have seen a damaging cut to funding, which has left us running on its resources, with little time to put a contingency plan in place. First established in 1983, over the years the Play Forum has served thousands of children throughout Bassetlaw and its neighbouring areas. We support the child’s right to play and develop, by providing varied activities in many different settings. Wherever possible, the Play Forum use recycled materials for their activities, which are sourced from businesses in the region. Activities take place in various settings including; parks, schools, holiday clubs, after school clubs — and are made inclusive, providing opportunities for children of all abilities. The charity supports and promotes events for families with children

having special educational needs and it offers opportunities for adults through its volunteer programme. Creative workshops are held regularly, giving people the chance to learn and share new skills. The staff and volunteers are passionate about their roles, and are fighting hard to raise much needed funds, until a lifeline hopefully presents itself. If you feel that you can help in any way, or if you are interested in finding out about the ways in which you can help, please call 01909 482688. The charity is not only looking for much needed funds, but also for volunteers to help at community events and new members for its committee. Please help if you can, you can also visit our website www. bassetlawplayforum.org. uk for further information. There is also time to attend our Grand Charity Ball on Friday 10th June, starting at 7.30pm. This fantastic evening costs only £40 per ticket, and there is a discount available for tables of 10 or more. You can purchase tickets from Ye Olde Bell directly by calling 01777 705121, or by calling us here at the forum — we hope to see you there!

Rowan Tree Project

T

he Rowan Tree Project is run by men, for men. Life for men in the 21st Century is probably more difficult and complex than it has ever been. Frequent issues which come up are; new technology, unemployment, diversity, ill-health, and relationships issues. Today, society’s expectation of men is frequently changing. How do men cope? The Rowan Tree Project is a free, weekly meeting place, for men only. There they are able to find for

themselves — amongst other men — the ground from which they can proudly deal with life. The Rowan Tree project is a men’s group providing a safe place for discussion, self-improvement and positive growth, initially for a period of nine weeks. The meetings currently take place each Tuesday at 6.30pm, in Retford Town Hall. Please contact Paul Aspden via the Public Health Dept on 01777 863263. Join Paul for a chat and free tea or coffee!

Retford Male Voice Choir H

ello Retford, we are now actively seeking new members to help swell the ranks of the choir. In the past we have been a strong ‘tour de force', yet now after many of our old members have retired, it’s becoming a challenge to perform in the way that we would like. We can accommodate any male with an interest in singing and is there no need to be able to read music, or have any prior experience with singing in a choir. All people will need is enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and to be able to come to our rehearsals. If you would like to find out more about our wonderful choir, please call 01777 705092.

Ollerton Jubilee Gardening Club O

ur last monthly meeting was held in the Jubilee Hall on Tuesday 3rd May. Members were given a real photographic treat on an area of France known as the Camargue by Gerald Hall. Gerald has won numerous awards for his photographs on wildlife and his pictures of birds were outstanding. He had been given special certificates to roam about the Camargue to take his photographs and these are not easily granted. Among his slides, he showed some of himself in the Bull Ring and where he had to make a hasty exit over a five-foot fence! Two new members who found out

about us from the Sherwood Life magazine also took advantage of our special offer at our May meeting, of free membership for the year and it is great to have them on board — look out for our next Special Offer. At the St George’s Day celebration on 24th April we also had a stand, with plants for sale. Our gazebo and new club banner made our stand look far more attractive and we’re pleased to announce we had a record cash take. As always we’d love to welcome more new members, for more information please contact us on jim.carter32@tiscali.co.uk or call Jim on 01623 822556.

Awesome Audis MOTORING

Kit Johnson finds the pick of the S-Line bunch

A

udi has now become the marque of choice for upwardly mobile young professionals and many more people besides. Virtually every model Audi makes has its own S version which features high powered engines, uprated suspension and brakes and fourwheel drive to handle all that power. Here is my pick of the bunch.

S3

(1999 to 2003)

The A3 is Audi’s answer to the VW Golf — compact, nimble and practical. Throw in a 1.8 litre engine — dotted throughout the VAG family of cars in this period — turbocharged to produce 225bhp and an intelligent four wheel system and you have the ultimate upmarket hot hatch. The understated looks are enhanced by the big alloys and you get that legendary Audi build quality. As you might imagine, it goes like stink with 60mph coming up in 6.6 seconds and the ability to top 150. It also corners like its on rails but it isn’t as much fun to drive as a Golf GTI. Audi’s current desirability is reflected in the price — shop around and you can get an 02 model with 70k on the clock for £5,500.

Build Quality, performance, practicality Rather staid styling, pricey 26 Retford

│ Jun 2011

S4

Looks, performance, quality, sound There’s no room at all in the back

(2003 to 2005)

The A4 is a compact sporty saloon that also comes in estate and cabriolet guises. Turning it into an S4 involves adding a monstrous 4.2 litre V8 serving up a wholesome 335bhp. The vital statistics are 5.6 seconds and 155mph and the excellent Quattro system delivers superlative road holding in any conditions. As the top of the range model it offers all the goodies — leather, satnav and electric everything

S6

Space, comfort, class, performance Calamitous thirst, a bit old hat these days

(1999 to 2003)

This big executive bruiser comes as a saloon or an estate but the estate is definitely the one to go for. The power comes from the same engine as in the S4 and the performance is pretty much identical.

S8

and it is as well screwed together as anything on the road. This is a handsome car and the cabriolet particularly is a timeless classic. An 04 model with 75k under its belt will set you back £9,000.

There is masses of space in both the front and rear and the big boot makes it immensely practical. It handles better than any car this size has any right to do and yet is remarkably smooth riding. The sleek styling won awards when the A6 was first launched and it still looks the part now. The previous version of the S6 is good value too — expect to pay about £7000 for an 03 plate that has covered 80,000 miles. Looks, Comfort, handling, performance An expensive habit

(2006 to 2010)

Audi’s flagship luxury saloon lends itself nicely to the S treatment. The original model is too old for consideration now and the 340bhp engine doesn’t really cut the mustard these days. However, the most recent version is a real eye opener — audi have borrowed the magnificent 5.2 litre V10 from the Lamborghini Gallardo. That’s still enough to punt it to 62mph in five seconds. This car is immensely spacious,

hugely luxurious, staggeringly well equipped and corners like the Lambo it borrowed the engine from. You’ll have to dig deep if you want one though — £20k puts you in a five year old example with 100,000 miles on it.

ollowing our series of walks in 2010, we've teamed up with Retford Ramblers to bring you another great set of trails around the local area. This month — Danes Hill Nature Reserve. Retford Ramblers have another busy month in June, making the most of the longer days and hopefully, the good weather.

In association with Retford Ramblers

There are full day walks to Bardney limewoods (June 5th), Cressbrook (8th), Lathkill Dale (15th) and Kinder Scout (26th). The series of evening walks continues with walks at Blyth (7th) and Clayworth (21st). Anyone is welcome to join the walks, particularly the short evening outings, but

please email frasersally@hotmail.co.uk to check the meeting times and venue. It has been brought to our attention that the walk in the May edition for Sturton Le Steeple included a path with disputed right of way — for this walk, we advise following point 1 directly to point 3 down Springs Lane.

This month: Danes Hill Distance: 1.5 miles Time: 30 minutes, plus browsing! Start: Car park Terrain: Flat, with good paths.

path at the top left hand corner. Turn right at the junction and join the longer route at point 5

1. To follow the longer route, leave the car park via the footpath to the road. Cross the road and re-enter the reserve on the other side. Follow the path heading left. Pass straight on at the junction to take the path marked ‘easy access’ 2. Cross the footbridge and turn right. 3. Follow the path ignoring any right turns. This will take you around in a loop, heading back to the road alongside the railway line. 4. At the road cross over and enter the southern section of the reserve. Keep to the right at the first two junctions. Follow the path as it passes over a footbridge and turns right again. At the next junction turn left. 5. On joining the firm path, either turn left and then left again to the car park, or go right to walk around the lake before returning to your car.

Blacksmith's forges winning formula I

t’s not an easy task making a success of a country pub these days. Yet the landlords of the Blacksmith’s Arms at Everton, near Bawtry, seem to have the winning formula. Dave, Mandy and Chris took over the reigns of this much-loved local late last year, after making a success of their other pub, The Ship at Bawtry, for the past four years. The Waddingtons — our close friends who live in the village of Everton — have been raving to us since before Christmas, about how “finally” their local pub has found the right landlord to make it great for everyone, so we were curious to find out if this indeed was the case. We’d only visited once before a couple of years ago, during our narrowboat experience day, and although the food was ‘okay’, it didn’t leave a remarkable impression — well, what a difference a team change can make. Our first impression upon entering the pub was ‘wow this is clean!’, yes, it occured to us that was a 42 Retford

│ Jun 2011

Leanne Lodge & Julian Broadhead try out The Blacksmith's, Everton strange thought too, but it’s true! The whole place was pristine from top to bottom. The second thought was, ‘some work has gone in to this place since we were here last!’ and again, this wasn’t an understatement. The Blacksmith’s Arms is a 17th century pub which retains most of its original character and features. It is separated in to different areas for dining and relaxing with family and friends. Oak beams, and various seating areas which include cosy fireplaces and an old bread oven all adds to the ambience. Yet, what really creates the place — more than anywhere we’ve been to lately — is there's a spot at this pub to relax, drink and dine that will suit everyone’s tastes! You have a choice of numerous areas to enjoy drinks and meals at The Blacksmith’s Arms. As well as the seating in the

main pub area, there is a large and beautiful conservatory where meals are served on Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch. The conservatory is also available for private functions. If al fresco is more your thing, then you can choose from no less than three different outdoor spaces to enjoy your meal. There is a quaint beer garden with a children’s play area, and tables with parasols outside the pub entrance overlooking beautifully planted areas. In addition there is a patio area near the conservatory, which has been described as the ‘Roman Garden’, with stone tables and benches, nestle inside whitewashed walls and small trees. On a sunny day I’m sure it would be easy to imagine you were in another climate, other than our good old Blighty! We visited on an early Wednesday lunchtime and there were already several people enjoying drinks inside the pub. The rustic charm was added, by choosing our meals from traditional

blackboards hung on the walls near the bar area. The venue caters for all types of diners, from light lunches such as sandwiches and jacket potatoes priced from £4.95, to the full monty of three courses meals, which of course we had to sample. There are always daily specials and even a comprehensive list of fish courses to peruse. Both the Blacksmith's Arms and The Ship have strong staffing teams, and this has been an advantage when establishing great catering set-ups at the pubs. The two pubs have three chefs between them and because of other advantages they share, they’re able to serve up great tasting food at good value prices. So what could you expect to see on the menu at the Blacksmith’s Arms? Well, the starters are priced from £3.90 each, main meals from £7.50 and all desserts are a bargain at only £3.95 each! Julian chose black pudding wrapped in bacon with lime marmalade, and I had goats cheese to start. In truth we would have loved to sample all of the starters — tapas style — such was the delightful selection on offer. Julian’s choice was the better of our two, the goats cheese was nice, but the black pudding and bacon was on another level! Of course I stole a couple of bites,

and Julian agreed that it was the salty taste from the bacon, with the sweet of the marmalade and the rich black pudding that made his starter a winner. For our main courses, I selected Meat and Potato Pie, Julian had Lamb Cutlets and we both chose chips and seasonal vegetables as accompaniments. We were both tempted by the sound of the Nottinghamshire Pie though! The service was friendly and attentive throughout, and the whole meal was a delight. Indeed, my own usually large appetite was unable to finish the large piece of homemade pie — it had thick short crust pastry and tender chunks of steak and potato. I love a good homemade pie and the pastry was even thicker than Julian’s doorstep attempts, but this was also flaky and well-seasoned. For the first review ever, Julian did not have room for dessert — therefore I couldn’t let the side down, only the diet, and had to partake! I chose Carrot Cake and the only disappointment was that I couldn’t finish it. Our meal at the Blacksmith’s Arms at Everton was a lovely experience

and one we’re definitely going to follow up with a return visit. I think next time we’ll try Sunday Lunch, as they serve four different types of meat, along with alternative menu choices too! We looked at the blackboard information about it and it sounds great value — you can have one course for £7.95, two courses for £11.95 or all three courses for just £14.95. The fantastic home cooked food, beautiful traditional surroundings and warm service from The Blacksmith’s Arms, are all what we want to experience from a hearty country pub. With summer just about here, you don’t need another excuse to pay a visit and try a little slice of the winning formula for yourself! assetlaw Mind is a small local charity that has provided the whole of Bassetlaw with services of support for some 33 years. Unfortunately due to funding cuts and the need for growth in services, we are struggling to cope with demand. We urgently need to raise funds to enable us to continue to provide support. If you feel that you could help in any way then please contact us by calling 01909 476075 before it’s too late. At present we continue to provide a number of group based services both within our centre at Worksop and in the community at Retford.

ver the weekend of the 30th and 31st July, there will be a Festival to celebrate Lammas. This is the blessing of the first fruits of the year, traditionally the forerunner of the Harvest Festival. A sack of grain is being taken by vintage tractor to Leverton Windmill for grinding — from there, a sack of flour will be taken back to the village hall, again by vintage tractor, where we are having a bread making competition and bread making demonstrations from 10.00am onwards. There will also be cooking competitions, have a go biscuit decorating (you can eat your efforts

ur Dig It Challenge moved up a notch in the last few weeks and if I’m honest, it’s now become more ‘Leanne’s Challenge’ than anything else! I’m realising that vegetable gardening isn’t conducted on a month by month basis — like I report to you — it’s a day by day task, in fact you have no choice in the matter if you want to succeed. Being a novice GYO gardener, I have decided to start writing a journal, well more of a list of things done and when, thus ensuring when it comes to next year — heaven forbid, I’m already paling at the work involved — I’ll be able to see what I did and when, and learn from the successes but even more importantly the failures. To be honest — amateur that I am —

there haven’t been many failures yet! Only two so far, and they’ve both been in the last few weeks. Firstly the Rosemary seeds I sowed never germinated at all — I’m still not sure if this was down to the seeds or the conditions weren’t right. And then remember that frost that we had after all that lovely weather? Well, the previous day I had planted out some squash plants and they were hit hard the next evening — having said that, all but one went on to recover. The difficulty has definitely been keeping up with all the tasks which have to be done! The most labour intensive stage

up… in growing fruit and vegetables is the first few months with May needing the most work so far. Subsequently this has taken its toll on some of the other garden jobs usually done by now — we have around 25 pots and hanging baskets which are usually full to bursting and none have even been planted up yet! So yes, my vegetable growing has gone overboard — I wanted the challenge to work, so I hedged my bets. For example, I sowed 120 tomato modules and have ended up with 96 strong healthy tomato plants to pot on, such was the success rate! And the tomatoes only account for just four varieties of the 42 different types of fruit and vegetables we’re growing for the challenge!

GARDENS

What’s also doing well is our fruit this year — we have tubs of strawberries and they’re all in flower. We had good blossoms on all the fruit trees — apples, pear, peach and plum. The same happened last year but we only ended up with flower heads afterwards — this year the blossom has now turned to promising little fruits and I’m hoping that we’ll get much more than the apples this time. In addition to the other fruit plants, the raspberry, blackberry, whitecurrant and gooseberry bushes are all doing fantastic and again are now starting to get the small fruits on them replacing the flowers — all thanks to those bees that we are now constantly hearing are under threat. We know over the last two months how dry it’s been and I had forgotten how long it actually takes to water the garden, yet it’s been necessary and as we have some thirsty plants — particularly the squashes — I’ve been close to losing a few already, when I’ve forgotten to water, or not opened up the greenhouse on the warmer days.

I’ve planted in three areas straight in to the ground, and we also have the six raised beds in addition to the greenhouse and tubs. The raised beds got off to a slow start but now the potatoes, carrots and shallots are all coming on nicely (see www.facebook.com/digitchallenge for all of the photos so far from the challenge!) sowing in stages that’s for sure. Currently we have way too much lettuce ready all at the same time — due to sowing too much at the start — and the other salad

Do this month: • Carry on sowing new seeds to keep a constant supply throughout the summer. • Keep on top of the watering, if the dry spell continues then some plants may need a sprinkle twice a day — one day without water can be enough to kill a plant! • Just as important is to ensure that your soil is in a great condition — with plenty of organic matter. • Feed fruit and vegetable plants on a regular basis, how to do this is up to the individual gardener. One great way is using a natural home-made nettle brew!

vegetables are still a long way off! Therefore I’ve started sowing a tray of salad every couple of weeks and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the summer. Mix nettles and water and let it stew — it stinks but makes a great nitrogen-based feed. • The risk of frost should be over and the rest of mature plants can be put in to their final growing places. • If not remaining in the greenhouse, the temperature for tomatoes should be high enough for them to go out from mid-June. • Thin out plants where necessary and discard or replant the weaker ones. • Don’t forget your netting and other pest control methods to deter pests.

As there are many varieties of quick growing vegetable and salad plants, it’s still not too late to grow your own this summer and you can even get a helping hand from your local garden centres, where most will sell young vegetable plants, giving you a head start! Late May and early June is the time that pests can become a bit of a hassle in the garden and at the time of going to press we don’t have a major problem yet — but one thing’s for certain, where there are vegetables and fruit, the pests will be sure to follow! We didn’t even bother trying to keep them at bay last year and subsequently our strawberries took a huge hit from birds, and small animals. Some were even so brazen that they didn’t even wait until the evening to do it! This year will be different — I’d actually like to taste some of the fruits of our labour this time. There are so many ways to try to deter pests. One which I read about when we first

started the challenge is companion planting, where you choose to position certain plants together to help deter certain pests, but also to help certain varieties grow better. It’s not 100% effective, but I have tried a little bit of it this year and we’ll see if it helps. In our raised beds I’ve planted onions and leeks with carrots, in the hope that the leeks will see off the Carrot Fly, and the carrots will see off any Onion Fly or Leek Moths! Not only can companion planting assist with pest control, and help certain plants do better, it also lends to creating a more pleasing vista for your vegetable patch. It’s been the tradition by Cottage gardeners to plant flowers and vegetables side by side — mainly because of space restrictions — but it can create a beautiful scene! I suppose the main aspect of pest control is just to be vigilant at all times, check all plants on a regular basis and if you discover a problem,

This is a group of National Trust volunteers who perform as the Matron and four former occupants of the Southwell Workhouse. They recount the stories of the four occupants with graphic detail of how they came to be living in the workhouse and what their lives were like as occupants of that grim building. The whole performance was very convincing, surprising and moving and was excellent entertainment. The next meeting of the club is on Wednesday 8th June at Westhill Community Centre at 10.00 for 10.30am when there will be a talk entitled ‘Botanical Travels’ Prospective new members are always welcome.

Holiday hound PETS

N

ow the holiday season is upon us and more of us are spending our holiday time here in the UK, learning how to travel with your dog can make the experience less stressful and a lot of more enjoyable! Travelling with your pooch can be a major hassle if you don’t make all the right choices. It should be planned ahead of time so you don’t ruin your family weekend getaway or long holiday. If you’ve decided to take your dog with you on your trip, here are a few reminders about what to do to ensure a safe travel experience.

BUY A DOG TAG OR COLLAR WITH IDENTIFICATION

Your dog needs to wear a collar or tag with all the necessary identification in it. A microchip may also be beneficial for additional security. The tag should contain your dog's name, your name, and your home phone number, as well as proof of innoculations. Keep your dog's collar and tag on whenever you’re outside. No matter how well behaved your dog may be, there’s always a chance that they may accidentally get lost or get away from you. All the information on your dog tag will be very important as you travel or decide to leave your pet at a kennel.

SAFETY FIRST

Always remember safety first. The car is usually the best way to travel with dogs. If you own a vehicle, chances are your dog has ridden in it for trips to the vets, the park and so on — if not, now is the time to start. Some dogs have anxiety over riding in cars. To ensure your dog’s safety while they're in the car, 54 Retford

│ Jun 2011

Julian Broadhead on what to do when taking pooch on holiday purchase a dog car seat. With the use of this equipment, your furry friend will be safer and more comfortable if your car makes a sudden stop.

TRAIN YOUR DOG

Before you travel, your dog should have basic training so they will be well-behaved during the trip. It is a good idea to make your first few trips in the car to somewhere fun for your dog before embarking on a long trip. Take your dog to a park so they associate a car ride with something fun.

PLAN AHEAD

ALWAYS BE PREPARED

Emergencies can happen while you’re travelling with your dog, so you need to make some additional preparation. Planning your trip can make any form of emergency less stressful. Prepare a list of veterinary hospitals in the area where you’ll be staying, along with a detailed map. Check that they will be open during when you are on holiday. Follow these simple tips and your trip will be hasslefree for you and your pooch!

Plot rest stops along the way while travelling with your dog, and plan to stop every three-to-five hours to allow your dog to relieve themselves, drink water and stretch their legs — more or less depending on your dog’s needs.

BRING ALL THE NECESSARY DOG SUPPLIES

When taking a long trip, don’t forget to pack all the necessary supplies for your dog. Among the essentials include; water, dog food, treats, their collar, grooming supplies and leash. You should also bring your dog’s favourite toys, and plastic bags for their poop — also, be sure to bring any medication that your dog needs. e: enquiries@retfordlifemagazine.com │ t: 01777 839199

Ranskill & Torworth Scarecrow Festival O

nce again the villages of Ranskill and Torworth are all set for the annual “invasion” — by hundreds of Scarecrows. The annual Ranskill and Torworth Village and Scarecrow Festival takes place this year over the weekend of June 11th and 12th — and last year’s Festival attracted well over 100 entries for the now famous Scarecrow Competition. “Each year we have increased the number of entries and last year we topped the 100 mark for the first time,” said Festival Chairman Dave Hill. “We are hoping for a further increase this year and with added attractions, the 2011 Festival will be a full two day Festival with something for all the family. “Visitors travel from all over North Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire and every year we have hundreds of visitors walking and driving round the two villages to see the scarecrows,” he added. The main Festival takes place on the Village Park at Mattersey Road in Ranskill with two giant marquees filled with craft stalls and displays. Out on the park there are children’s rides, side shows and stalls, two brass band concerts, line dancing, gymnastic and dancing displays, plant stalls, cake stalls, a bouncy castle, roundabouts and a family sports day. Visitors will be able to ‘get up close’ with some exotic and unusual animals thanks to a

visit from ‘Meetacreature’. Two new features for this year’s Festival are, an adults’ Tug of War Competition and a Teddy Bears’ Picnic — both on Sunday afternoon. On the Saturday, a Circus entertainer will be performing and will also be teaching visitors a few of the tricks of his trade, as well as a Punch and Judy Show, a children’s entertainer, a children’s Fancy Dress Competition and a visit by the Army Climbing Team with their climbing wall. On the Saturday evening, the Village stages its annual Picnic in the Park when residents and visitors bring along the tables and chairs and their own food and wine and dance the night away under the stars. Music will be provided by Ranskill vocalist Terry Williams and the ever popular Stormbeats. Sunday starts with a giant Car Boot Sale on the Village Park, and there will be Vintage Bus Tours around the two villages to give those who cannot walk a chance to see the scarecrows. Following the afternoon sports and Teddy Bears’ Picnic, the Festival concludes on Sunday evening with the presentation of prizes and a Special Songs of Praise Service led by the Salvation Army Band. Throughout the weekend there will be full catering facilities on the Village Park and light refreshments will also be available in St Barnabas’ Parish Church which will also stage an arts and crafts display.

TECHNOLOGY

Tab-let battle commence…

W

hen the Apple iPad was launched I noted that it was more of a gadget than a serious office tool. I also predicted that it would be a big seller. In the event, I suspect that even the ebullient Steve Jobs will have been taken by surprise. In the first year from launch Apple shifted about 20 million units; not too shabby when you consider that number equates to over £4 billion in revenue. Apple has also already launched version 2 of the iPad. This dramatic commercial success has not gone unnoticed by Apple’s rivals; virtually every PC manufacturer has at least one tablet computer somewhere in their product range. The most significant entrant into the fray is Sony which has just launched not one, but two tablet PCs. The first, the S1, has a 9.5 inch touchscreen and is similar to the iPad in size and feel. There is also an S2 which has a clamshell design and two 5.5 inch screens similar to the Nintendo DS — the S2 is also a mobile communications device giving it the capability of a Smartphone. Both models will have access to Sony’s Qriosity media service which enables music and video streaming, PlayStation Suite which allows users to play PS games on the move and access to Sony’s Reader ebook store — this basically turns them into the equivalent of the Amazon Kindle. Interestingly, Sony has opted to use the Google Android operating system which is the most widely used Smartphone operating system. This decision represents a seismic shift in the world of the portable computer. 58 Retford

Graham Iek on Sony's foray into the tablet PC market

For almost twenty years laptops and notebooks have simply been portable versions of the common or garden PC. But the way they are used, particularly by the younger generation, has changed beyond all recognition. Think what your kids do when they borrow your laptop — they will be on Facebook, or watching the latest episode of Doctor Who on iPlayer, or playing a game. Everything is recreational; everything is linked to the internet, only under extreme duress will you find your child typing up an essay for homework. This has been the key to the success of the iPad. It is not so much a computer as a multimedia entertainment console. With the ubiquitous iTunes music and video library and the App Store with however many tens of thousands of software applications it now boasts, Apple offers the content to go with the hardware. The touch screen and accelerometer technology which detects physical movements of the computer also make the iPad a superlative mobile gaming console.

Sony is going to have its work cut out if it is going to go up against the iPad but, in theory, should be more than up to the battle. As an electronics manufacturer Sony is a long established global giant with a solid reputation for quality. In partnership with Ericsson, Sony is one of the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturers. Sony has a sprawling media empire encompassing music and film and, as for computer gaming, I will just say one word — PlayStation! The tie up with Google via the Android operating system is also a smart move with both companies benefiting from the relationship. However, all is not well at Sony. They were slow to switch their focus to Smartphones allowing Apple to overtake them in terms of market share and the theft of the personal data of over 100 million PlayStation and media customers has made Sony a dirty word among tech savvy consumers. Most of all, where the PlayStation was a market leading product, the S1 and S2 tablet computers are arriving rather late at the party. Sony very much needs its new tablets to be winners; it’s too early to say whether they will be or not. All I will say is that they’re going to have to be seriously good.

t this year’s festival, 4th & 5th June, there’s lots of fun things to do. You can bring along your dog and enter in the fun dog show on the Saturday, and even have a go at archery — there’s also donkey carts and a children's train too! Our visiting Town Crier will make sure you don't miss anything. For the children there’s also a Bouncy castle, a helta skelta, a coconut shy, hook a duck, hook a bag and helium balloons, to mention just a few of the stalls and attractions. On Sunday you will be able to view the vintage car display, tractors and steam

his year marks an important milestone for Retford based Generally G & S — the society is celebrating its silver jubilee! Over the last 25 years Generally G & S have done much more than simply perform the usual round of G & S operettas. Under the guidance of Musical Director Martin Yates, and working closely with the Sullivan Society, they have performed many of the operas and other musical works written by Sir Arthur Sullivan without WS Gilbert. These have included Haddon Hall, The Beauty Stone, The Rose of Persia and The Chieftan. Videos of the productions were bought by G & S fans worldwide. Each year the society gives a spring concert, which over the years has included a varied range;

Clarborough Village Festival engines — all topped off with a tractor rally around the village in the morning. However, that's if you can tear yourself away from the car boot and other stalls with handmade goods for sale in and around our village hall. The landlord at the Kings Arms has organised a Real Ale Festival and we're looking for teams of 8 to have a go in our tug of war competition Sunday afternoon — do you think you're brave enough? After all that, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite and there will be many different types of food and drink on offer. The festival will no doubt prove to be a great weekend for friends and family, so

come along, relax, join in and have fun. The festival helps to raise money for Clarborough Village, so if you still have any energy left on the Saturday night, then we are having our annual Ceilidh with Pinch 'o' Snuff. Tickets are £8.00 and include food — doors open at 7.00pm. This year we’re also trying to raise funds to provide equipment for a 'first responder' who will be located in Clarborough village for local emergencies. Any more information or to book tickets for the Ceilidh, please call 01777 705877, 01777 705616 or 01777 710780.

Generally G&S South African music, songs from the shows, evergreen favourites and operatic arias and choruses. Of course songs from all 12 G & S operettas have also featured strongly. The annual stage production is performed in the Majestic theatre in late October. All of the perennial favourites such as The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance have been played to appreciative audiences, and recently, a third annual event has been added. The society travel to Scarborough each July to sing the ‘backing chorus’ at the Spa Theatre’s G & S Extavaganza. This year’s October production is

one of the lesser known operettas of G & S, The Grand Duke. This was the last of the Gilbert and Sullivan collaborations and is not often performed because the libretto was weak. Generally G & S have remedied this problem and audiences will find that the work is very funny and full of good tunes! New members are always welcome — why not join us for ‘The Grand Duke’? We rehearse every Monday from 7.30pm at Hallcroft Methodist Chapel, just come along or phone Margaret Doherty on 01777 701689 or Mike Spencer on 01777 704687.

Mini Operatic Bunch Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. All tickets cost £8 each, family tickets (2 adults and

2 children) cost £30. Please call the Box Office on 01777 706866 for tickets.

O

n Sunday 15th May, Wheatley Bowls Club hosted its first major Open Bowls Tournament. The event — sponsored by EDF Energy — attracted 60 bowlers in 20 teams, mostly from clubs around Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, with one team travelling from Essex to participate. The tournament was opened by Pip Garner, President of the Wheatley Club and, despite a chilly day with persistent showers, the teams enjoyed a full day of competition. The eventual winners of the tournament — winning £150 — were P Cawthorne, W Bryan and D Taylor from Beckingham. Teams were presented with their prizes by Harry Kirk, Chairman of Wheatley Bowls Club. All who participated agreed the day has been a great success and look forward to this becoming an annual event.

n the last couple of months, CHinK have organised numerous successful events to raise funds for the local charity. Two recent concerts have raised a combined total of over £380! On 9th April Tuxfordians were treated to a themed evening of song, piano music and poetry by a team of talented artists from Allington, near Grantham. In March, Children in Kenya held another Musical evening, this time Village Harmony, lead by the present musical director Judith Corker, was welcomed back to Tuxford to perform music with the theme of ‘Town vs Country’. Their performance lasted 90 minutes and ended with the very popular song ‘You Raise Me Up’ — £150 was raised and Children in Kenya trustees would like to thank everyone who helped to make both the events a huge success.

Summer singing

O

n Saturday 2nd July, from 10.30am to 4.00pm you can take part in a summer singing event at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road. A group of enthusiasts based in Retford and Gainsborough are planning a fun day of harmony singing aimed at newcomers and experienced adult singers, both female and male alike. There is no need to read music as everything will be taught by ear in a relaxed and informal style. The day will be directed by Jacqui Ford, an experienced community choir leader based in Sheffield. If you would like to try the pleasure of singing in harmony, contact Pat on 01777 704154 or Judith on 01777 704038. It costs only £12 for the full day and booking will be essential — please bring some food to share for lunch, drinks will available. 66 Retford

Children in Kenya If you would like to hear more from Village Harmony, why not take a musical journey, which goes from City Streets to Country Roads, on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May at 7.30pm — the venue is Sturton-LeSteeple Village Hall and tickets, priced at £4 including refreshments, can be obtained by contacting K Milner on 01777 704770, J Roberts on 01427 880387 or J Anderson on 01777 704134, with all proceeds in aid of Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. On Saturday 7th May, the charity celebrated the opening of their new shop, on Newcastle Street, Tuxford. The shop has been opened with the help of volunteers and has already proved popular, with all proceeds from the shop to be ploughed back into providing a better life for the 120 children attending school and go towards the school building project, which includes a toilet block and a new kitchen area. The shop sells adult and child’s clothing, bric-a-brac, books, music and non electrical household items. On 11th June, at 10.00am the shop will be officially opened by District

Councillors from Tuxford and Trent Ward, Shirley and Keith Isard. Please come along, as everyone will be welcome. We also take donations of most items (except televisions and large items of furniture), so it’s a great opportunity to help the children, by clearing out; clothing, footwear, bags/ cases, china, hardback and paperback books, soft furnishings and linen, toys, board games, jigsaw puzzles, DVDs, CDs, kitchenware, unwanted gifts (e.g. toiletries, perfume, cosmetics, etc), ornaments, glassware, pictures, paintings, mirrors, watches and clocks. If you have any items that you would be proud to pass on please contact Georgie on 01777 871320, Chris on 01777 870583 or Deirdre on 01777 872604. We are still going to continue with our table top sales, held every first Saturday of the month at Tuxford Methodist Church, from 10.00am, and we still intend to continue with our ever popular ‘Giant Sales’. The next one is to be held on Saturday 2nd July from 10.00am at Tuxford Methodist Church.

Local Cheer Dancers Represent UK A

fter coming second place in The UK Cheerleading Association competition in Manchester, Bassetlaw’s ‘Bedazzled’ Cheer Team have qualified to represent the UK and Bassetlaw in the European Championships in Slovenia in July. The girls all aged between 12 to 15 all come from schools within the Bassetlaw area and attend local dance schools. Although it is a huge honour for

the girls to represent their country, the girls — supported by their family and friends — have been very busy fundraising to enable them to pay for the costs involved for them to travel to Slovenia, for the three-day contest. Support for the Cheer Team has been fantastic, and many groups, organisations and councillors have pledged their support and been a great help to the Cheer Team who are still fundraising. If you would like to support the Bedazzled Cheer Team in their fundraising, please contact Leanne at Retford Life on 01777 839199 who will put you in touch with the fundraisers.
