Retired Homeowners: your home could be sold to fund care home fees

“We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the Local Authority get it all?” If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home could cost £500-£800 a week or more. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care might seem only a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.

Married Couples If you and your husband/wife currently have ‘Mirror Wills’ or ‘Joint Wills’ you risk leaving your share of your home to your husband/wife for it simply to be swallowed up in care home fees. A legal trust arrangement within your Will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose.

Widowed/Single The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now.

Collective Legal Solutions are experts at helping you protect your hard earned wealth. Contact us today for your FREE information pack.

“I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children” Have you considered what will happen if your child/children experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? What will happen if your child/ children experience financial difficulties and enter bankruptcy? Did you know that Capital Gains Tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children? It’s not too late to put it right – contact us today for advice.

Birds galore on Historic Day for Village Park your doorstep! soon Ranskill Village Park will become the Queen Elizabeth

Did you know that there have been 252 different species of bird recorded in an area of disused gravel pits that stretches along the River Idle from the north side of Retford, passing Lound and reaching as far as Mattersey Priory? The Idle Valley Nature Reserve has been developed on the site of these now restored gravel pits and is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Lound Bird Club, the group who monitor and record birds here, was established in 1990 and on Thursday 12th September at 7.30pm, Gary Hobson will be giving an illustrated talk on the ‘Birds of the Idle Valley Nature Reserve’. Gary is a founder member and currently the club Secretary and website administrator for the bird club. The talk will take place at the Idle Valley Centre, North Road, Retford, DN22 8SG (for Sat Nav) and is open to all. The entrance fee is £2.00 per person, which includes refreshments. We look forward to giving you an insight into some of the birds you could very easily find on your doorstep!

Dancing the night away! On the first Saturday of every

month (except the second Saturday in December) there is a ballroom/ Latin American dance held in the Retford Town Hall from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. The dance is held in the magnificent ballroom, and there is live music. The bar is available all evening and light refreshments are served at the interval. It costs £5.00 per person, and £1.00 membership. Why not come along to Retford Town Hall, join us for the evening, and dance the night away!

II Diamond Jubilee Park, registered with the Fields in Trust, thus meaning its future will be guaranteed as a recreation ground forever. Ranskill Parish Council is organising a special Field Day to mark this historic occasion. Parish Council Clerk Dave McAra said, “The Parish Council decided to go for Fields in Trust status to protect the park for future generations. “It means there can be no building on the park at any time in the future, although a special clause has been written into the deeds which could allow the building of a Village Hall or Community Centre at the east end of the park, should the funding become available. “Thanks to grant funding from WREN and the Nottinghamshire County Council Local Improvement Scheme, totalling almost £30,000, allowing new play equipment was installed on the park earlier this year.” To mark the occasion a new notice board will be erected with the wording ‘Ranskill Village Park’ and ‘QEII Diamond Jubilee 1952 – 2012’ and a ’Diamond Jubilee’ plaque will be placed in the Park. The Field Day will take place on Saturday 31st August, with a theme of ‘People, Food and the Outdoors’. The Village Park is something we can all be proud of and

we have now protected it in perpetuity. Earlier this year the Parish Council set up a special working group to plan the Field Day and encourage people to join in the celebrations. There will be something for everyone and the aim is to have a good time in the open air. There will be childrens' sports, nature displays, food demonstrations, a vintage bus, outdoor leisure displays, a display by the Chesterfield Canal Trust, the British Bee Keeping Association with honey and wax sales, a WI Toy Swap stall, Tuxford Mill, a Retro Citroen Coffee Van plus lots more. The event will be opened by local Bassetlaw District Councillor Mike Gray. HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Over 100 men in South Yorkshire

and Bassetlaw have booked themselves in for the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening programme. The screening is available for the ultrasound scan that examines the aorta in the abdominal area, to check for a swollen artery. This is in addition to the almost 8,500 men who are 65 this year who have already received invitations for screening. Vascular surgeon Mr Ray Cuschieri, clinical lead for the NHS AAA Screening Programme in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and Deputy Medical Director of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals said, “It is fantastic to see that so many men have made contact with us since the AAA Screening Programme was announced last week. “The programme is extremely important as men who have an AAA do not generally know they have the condition until it is too late, which

is why screening is so important. “The screening test is simple, painless, non-invasive and usually takes less than 10 minutes. Early detection of AAAs through screening enables us to offer monitoring or treatment, helping to reduce the number of deaths caused by the condition. “While the number of men making appointments is very encouraging, I am asking every man who has received an invitation to consider attending for screening to benefit from the programme. I would also extend this invitation to any men aged over 65 who can also make an appointment.” In England and Wales, an estimated 80,000 men aged between 65 and 74 are affected by AAAs, which are caused when the main blood vessel in the abdomen — the aorta — weakens and starts to expand. If undetected, the aorta can rupture — a medical emergency that is usually

Parkinson’s UK The July meeting saw a return

visit from Mel (Parkinson’s Nurse) and Julia Robinson (Information and Support Worker PUK). Mel gave an excellent presentation about Parkinson’s medications and treatments. Julia’s talk centred around the new disability benefits and what it means to Parkinson patients. Both talks were well received and a lively question time followed. New members again joined the Branch and were warmly welcomed. July also saw Branch members enjoying a coach trip (in glorious sunshine) to The Deep in Hull. As the Branch numbers continue to swell a busy programme of events is planned for the late summer

and autumn. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 6th August, which will be a summer social afternoon organised and run by Sharon Hall. A trip to The Black Country Museum at Dudley is arranged for Tuesday 11th September. For more information about any of the Branch activities call Chris on 01909 730629. Our aim is to offer the hand of friendship and support to everyone with Parkinson’s, their family and friends. No one should feel alone with the condition. There is much to be gained and friendships to be made from the Branch meetings.

Cardiac Support Group At our meeting on Friday

5th July, Tony Eaton gave us an interesting and enlightening talk relating to Help for Heroes. The amazing work undertaken by the charity is linked closely with our organisations that are attached to our armed forces. Help for Heroes is there for our heroes, who may suffer with any physical challenges through to mental health issues, which have arisen from serving our country. The charity is a caring organisation and we should do everything we can to help raise funds for this worthy cause.

On Wednesday 10th July we had a joint venture day out with our friends from the Bassetlaw Parkinson UK Society. We visited The Deep in Hull and all enjoyed a pleasant day. Please do come along, all new friends will be welcomed. For further information, please call Pat Broskom on 01909 562361.

StartUp Britain co-founder Emma Jones MBE said, “Since we launched StartUp Britain two years ago, we’ve seen record numbers of people starting businesses and creating their own value in the UK. By bringing our bus to Worksop we want to give people the confidence to find their inner entrepreneur — and provide a boost to their own local economy.” Jo White, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration at Bassetlaw District Council said “We are delighted to be able to attract the StartUp Britain campaign to Bassetlaw and this offers a fantastic opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to get expert advice on starting their own businesses.” StartUp Britain campaign is supported by top firms, including Intuit, PayPal and BT — and this year it has the backing of the Department for Business, Industry and Skills. Nicholas Martin comes to Rampton Village Hall

Cancer sufferer to raise funds for Odyssey

You are invited to an afternoon of music presented by organist Nicholas Martin at Rampton Village Hall, Retford, on Sunday 11th August at 2.00pm. Tickets are £6.00, which includes tea, coffee and biscuits. You can obtain tickets by calling 01777 248317, or 01777 704886. You can also purchase them from any member of Rampton Bowls Club and thanks go to the club who has kindly sponsored the event.

My name is Dianne Freeth and in February this year I was told I would have less than a year left to live. So in order to help others who have survived cancer, I am raising money for the cancer charity ODYSSEY, www.oddyssey. org. I am taking on the challenge of cycling the distance of 250 miles from Cardiff to Caernarfon in September, and I am appealing to as many people as possible to dig deep support me in raising funds for the charity. I know the challenge won’t be easy, especially as I before I made this decision I couldn’t even remember when I last rode a bike, let alone owning one! Yet I have so much support, not in the least my sister Hermione, who will also be joining me on the journey. This may seem a strange way to spend my time, but I am living with cancer not dying with cancer, and my way of coping

is that I’m up front! Everybody hides away and thinks it’s really a bad thing, but it’s not. Yes I have cancer, and I’ve got no hair and I’m dying, but that’s the best way to be with people, because you should talk about it. There is more to life than just sitting here or going out with my friends. It’s about giving something back. To have a challenge to work towards, gives me something to live for. Please give as much as you can by visiting www.justgiving.com/dianne-freeth to donate to the bike challenge.

YOUR MONEY

Money Saving Expert With Martin Lewis Get more tips from Martin at www.moneysavingexpert.com

They are the Marmite of finance. Credit cards are both the best and worst way to borrow — do it right and it’s a way to get a loan at no cost at all. However, get it wrong and it can put you in debt hell. One of the key weapons in the savvy customer’s arsenal is a balance transfer, which allows you to cut existing debt costs. So, I want to show you the best current deals and clear up some common myths. In a nutshell, a balance transfer card repays debts on other cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at a cheaper rate. As more of your repayments clear the debt, you pay less interest and are debt-free sooner. THREE GOLDEN RULES TO REMEMBER It isn’t just about getting the right card; it’s about doing it the right way. There are three simple rules you always need to follow: 1) With a 0% card, either clear the debt or shift it again before the 0% ends — or you will pay the full APR, meaning interest costs soon mount up. 2) Always pay at least the specified minimum repayment on time each month (preferably more) or you risk losing the special rate. 3) Don’t spend or withdraw cash on these, it isn’t usually at the cheap rate. So those are the basics, but what is a rather simple concept that tends to throw up a huge number of questions? Here are the most common I receive: HOW DO THEY DECIDE IF THEY’LL ACCEPT ME? Cards score your application based on how closely you meet their wish list of what a profitable customer is. So if you’ve had past credit problems, it’s tough. Frustratingly, the only way to find out for sure is to apply. But that puts a mark on your credit file (whether you’re accepted or not). HOW MANY CAN I APPLY FOR? There’s no set limit on the number of cards you can apply for, but lots of applications in a short space of time can cause problems. If you are credit card tarting (shifting from 0% to 24 Retford

│ Aug 2013

0% when it ends) then this shouldn’t be too big of an issue, as these applications should be spread out. WILL MY PAYMENTS REMAIN THE SAME IF I SHIFT TO A NEW CARD? You can repay what you like on a credit card as long as its meets the set monthly minimum. So the only time your repayments may change is if a card has a different minimum. While they’re all roughly similar, there can be a difference so shifting cards can mean higher monthly payments. If that’s an issue, check before applying (it’ll be in the summary box). Though remember only paying the minimum means it’ll take an age to repay, so try to repay more if you can. CAN I SHIFT DEBT TO A NEW CARD WITH THE SAME ISSUER? A card issuer may accept your application for another card, but most won’t allow you to switch debts between their cards. This applies to brands managed by the same firm such as MBNA and Virgin. MY NEW BALANCE TRANSFER CARD’S CREDIT LIMIT IS TOO LOW, WHAT CAN I DO? You can ask for an increase, but that’s rarely allowed. Yet shift the maximum debt you can anyway — the application hits your file, so you may as well use it. See if you can get another cheap card for the rest.

IF I SPEND ON A 0% BALANCE TRANSFER BUT PAY IT OFF, DO I PAY INTEREST? Spending is usually at the standard interest rate of 15–20%, even on a 0% balance transfer card. The only way to avoid this is to clear the entire debt off the card in full at the end of the month. If you repay all of your spending but leave transfer debt, you still pay interest. Get a different card to spend on — preferably one with either 0% on spending if you need to borrow or cashback if you don’t. SHOULD I CANCEL UNUSED OLD CARDS? Access to excess credit, even if unused, can make lenders wary. Cancelling could boost your creditworthiness, but there’s no hard and fast rule. Before cancelling, if you have debts elsewhere, check whether the card will give you an existing customer balance transfer offer. This can happen (i.e., it lets you shift debt to it at a cheap rate even though you’re not a new cardholder). A few, especially Barclaycard, will try to persuade you not to cancel with £50 cash. DO YOU PAY INTEREST ON THE TRANSFER FEE? This varies per provider, but either way it’s usually paid off after your first monthly payment, so the amount’s small. CAN I TRANSFER AN OVERDRAFT BALANCE/LOAN TO A 0% CARD? A money transfer lets you balance transfer cash into your bank account. You can then use it to repay the loan, so you owe the card instead. Be very careful, as most 0% cards don’t allow this at 0% and cost a fortune.

All you need is a swimming costume and goggles, a bicycle and helmet, a pair of trainers and some clothes you will be comfortable in. Timing uses an electronic chip meaning that at the end of the race competitors can use an onsite kiosk to print out their time including the breakdown of each individual section. Because of the growing nature of the sport, at least half the entrants will be first timers or in their first year of triathlon. There will be a family friendly atmosphere with bouncy castle, food outlets and equipment vendors in the finishing area promise to help make this a great event for all. Please head over to the event website www.bassetlawtriathlon.co.uk for more information and to enter.

The Bel Canto Singers and fundraising stalls, which have proved so popular in the past. Tickets cost £5.00 each and include refreshments in the interval (tea, coffee or cold drink, plus cake), and will be available in September from any of the singers or by telephoning 01636 822498. Between March and July of this year, we have been warmly welcomed to sing

at churches in Owsten Ferry, Carltonon-Trent, Retford, Herringthorpe and Hayton. We would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kind hospitality. If you are planning fundraising and would like a concert to help with this during 2014, between late May and early July, please call Beryl on 01427 848822.

Helen Stevenson shares her favourite baking treats THIS MONTH Raspberry Swiss Roll

Follow on Twitter: /baking_bliss

Happy August my fellow bakers! As I write this we are enjoying a lovely warm spell — is summer finally here? This month I am sharing with you a recipe for Swiss Roll. My late Nan Nellie was a huge fan of a slice of Swiss Roll in an afternoon with a cup of tea, and most

likely watching Countdown. People often get frightened of attempting it, but i assure you it is easy to do and looks impressive, and it is a good recipe to add to your repertoire. I have added a twist to the basic recipe by adding fresh raspberries and double cream.

Raspberry Swiss Roll

INGREDIENTS For the cake mix • 3 free-range eggs • 75g golden caster sugar • 75g self-raising flour For the icing • 75g raspberry jam • 125ml whipped double cream • 100g raspberries For the icing • Icing sugar METHOD • Preheat the oven to 200°c • Grease and line a 23cm x 30cm Swiss roll tin • Whisk the eggs and sugar in a bowl until pale and fluffy • Fold in the flour and spoon the mixture into the tin • Bake in the oven for 7–10 R

minutes, or until light and springy to the touch • Remove from the oven and turn the sponge out onto another piece of greaseproof paper • For the filling, spread the jam onto the sponge and then spread with the cream, leaving

a small gap around the edges • Place a row of raspberries along one edge, lengthways. • Roll the sponge to cover the raspberries and repeat the process until all of the raspberries have been used • Dust with icing sugar and serve

This year the National Tractor

and Engine Club’s Working Weekend is due to take place over the August Bank Holiday and will be held near Babworth, just south west of Retford on the same site as used last year. On Saturday, an auction will start the morning off, with items ranging from assorted vintage tractors and vehicles, to agricultural equipment

and small tools. The afternoon sees the Road Run, with roadworthy tractors going on a pleasant jaunt around the local villages via quiet country lanes, by-ways and offroading on farm tracks. On return to the site, club members are planning a barbeque, when participants can either provide their own food to cook or order steaks and sausages from a local Butcher who comes on site. Sunday starts with the ploughmen gathering for their match, which is always a contest of considerable skill, competitive enthusiasm and keen rivalry. The Open Air Countryside Service will also take place at 10.30am, which will be conducted by members of the local Clergy. This year we have Pleasley Colliery Welfare band to accompany the well- known harvest hymns. The rest of the day

There will be on-site catering operating each day providing breakfasts, lunch and evening snacks, not to mention of course the bar. HOMES

Create your own bedroom sanctuary A bedroom should be a personal getaway, a sanctuary, which expresses your favourite colours, feelings, and collections. Learn the main rules to remember when decorating your bedroom. CHOOSE SUBTLE COLOUR Instead of bold primary colours, choose soothing shades and a restful palate of monochromatic tones. Remember colour theory; gentle hues of blue, lavender, or green are considered calm and serene. Rich jeweltoned hues help set the mood of cosiness and comfort. Use toned-down versions of your favourite colours in the bedroom. That might mean choosing mauve instead of aubergine, or pumpkin instead of tangerine. DON'T OVERLOOK THE CEILING The ceiling is a fifth wall in a room. When you lie in bed, do you see a bland, blank surface? Add a subtle pattern or soft colour. Paint the 34 Retford

ceiling a slightly lighter version of the wall colour. This will help to visually lower the ceiling and give the space a feeling of comfort and intimacy. KEEP THE BEDROOM SIMPLE A bedroom should look cosy and simple, sophisticated, and elegant, regardless of what style of decorating you choose. Furnish your bedroom with only what you need. A bed, a bedside table or two, a dresser, and chair are necessities. Anything else is clutter. If you have room, place a chest of drawers in your wardrobe. Accessories should be kept at a minimum. Choose a beautiful piece of artwork, arrange some family photos, add flowers and candles, and leave it alone.

ABOVE Keep things simple with bedroom decor and furniture – keeping clutter and distractions to a minimum will make the room feel larger, really help you relax and sleep.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE FURNITURE When you're ready to buy bedroom furniture, start out with a floor plan and a measured drawing of the space. Furniture should fit the room it lives and this is particularly true for ►

INCLUDE SEVERAL LIGHTING OPTIONS In a bedroom it’s good to “layer” your lighting throughout the room. Ambient lighting lights the whole room, small lamps can focus light for reading and other activities, and accent light helps to wash the walls in soft illumination. To focus reading light where you need it, use a bedside lamp with a movable arm. Each light should be adjustable with a dimmer. Install a separate on/off switch for each light so that you can be selective and light only the area you want. LET YOUR BEDROOM BE A REAL GETAWAY Try to discipline yourself to keep your phone, computer, television or exercise equipment out of the bedroom. Create a cherished place to relax and renew. You'll love having a room dedicated to reading, sleeping and romance.

FOOD & DRINK

Great food loaded to the gunnels at The Boat Inn Richard and Helen head to the newly refurbished Boat Inn

It came as a welcome surprise to be invited to conduct this month’s restaurant review. Due to a last minute change of plan for Leanne and Julian’s baby sitting arrangements, which meant they couldn’t make it to The Boat Inn, Helen and I were drafted in as last-minute replacements. Luckily, our own meal arrangements for the night hadn’t been planned much further than “something-from-the-fridgewith-something-from-the-cupboard”. We arrived at The Boat Inn, Hayton on a glorious summer evening. The pub has recently been acquired by the Springhead Brewery, based in Laneham, just south of Retford, and has seen a thorough refurbishment throughout. The bar and seating area is light, open and airy, with plenty of places to sit for drinks or food, with a dedicated section in readiness for serving Sunday lunches. 40 Retford

│ Aug 2013

We were warmly greeted at the bar by licencee David, who familiarised us with Springhead’s newest pub. Along with a new menu featuring locally-sourced ingredients and awardwinning craft beers from the company’s micro-brewery, there are also newlyrefurbished bed and breakfast rooms. After our chat with David and being served with our drinks — Helen opted for a crisp Pino and I went for a pint of Springhead’s Robin Hood — we were introduced to the menu by waitress Hannah, who took us through the options available, before leaving us to make our choices. As it was such a lovely evening, we didn’t let up on the opportunity to eat outside in the canal-side beer garden. There’s a varied choice on the menu, with gluten-free options available, and starters including prawn cocktail, tempura chicken with sweet chilli dip and pan-fried garlic mushrooms topped with Stilton on toast. Prices start from £3.95. Helen went for the tempura chicken and I

went for the pan-fried garlic mushrooms. Helen is a great fan of chicken of any kind, so her starter went down very well. The chicken had a nice, light, crispy batter, and was offset really well with the chilli dip adding sweetness and heat. The salad served with it provided a refreshing summery crunch. The pan-fried mushrooms were nothing short of fantastic, giving a great, earthy taste, complimented by the peppery rocket. The melted Stilton added a strong tangy element that tied the whole dish together and the toasted ciabatta soaked up the juices nicely. For our main courses we’d chosen 10oz rib eye steak and pick and mix sausage and mash. Other menu choices including a wide range of pies, fish and chips, mushroom stroganoff, pan-fried plaice, slow-roast pork belly, home made lasagne and pan-fried duck breast, with prices ranging from £7.95 to £13.95. Helen went for the steak, as she thought she’d take a leaf out of my

father’s book, who rates a place on the quality of it’s steak or steak pie and I went for the pick and mix sausage and mash. Pick and mix is a way we’d never come across for ordering a meal, but I must say, it made a refreshing change, and gives you great choice on what it served. First you choose the type of sausage, from chipolata, pork and chilli, Lincolnshire, or gluten-free Cumberland. Then you choose your mash potato, from plain, wholegrain mustard, cheesy or black pudding, Finally, you choose your gravy, from plain, red onion, cracked black pepper or red wine. You can also add a Yorkshire pudding to round things off. I did that, of course! For me it was Cumberland sausage, wholegrain mustard mash and onion gravy. The portions of both the steak — served with chunky chips, onion rings, peas and roasted tomato — and the sausage and mash, were very generous. I for one was very full by the end! Helen’s steak was excellently cooked

and packed with flavour — I can say with authority as I had to have a try — the onion rings and chips were crispy and light and the tomatoes bursting with juice. The sausage and mash was real hearty fayre, with creamy mash and sausages packed with meat. It’s got to be one to go back for. The sun was on its way down by now, so it was time to go back inside and be tempted by dessert. Again, options are varied, from jam or treacle sponge, crumble of the day, ice cream, or what we chose, raspberry cheesecake. This was light, fresh and fruity, complimented by mango and passion fruit coulis and rounded the meal off nicely. Both Helen and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening; from the fantastic welcome by David, to impeccable service from Hannah — we even stayed on to play the pub quiz! — so it’s definitely high on the list to make a return to, hopefully sooner, rather than later.

31st July has been named ‘Roaring Meg Day’ by beer expert and author of ‘The Good Bottled Beer Guide’, Jeff Evans. The book recommends 366 beers for each day of the year, and Springhead’s Roaring Meg got the nod as a perfect beer for summer. So why not visit from 31st July to 3rd August when the pub is celebrating the honour with special meal deals, with Roaring Meg used as an ingredient in the recipe and served with the meal for a special set price. Sherwood Forest hosts 29th annual Robin Hood Festival

The Robin Hood Festival is now in its 29th year and will run from Monday 5th August to Sunday 11th August, when Robin is looking forward to welcoming all his followers to Sherwood Forest once again. The festival gives people the chance to sample medieval life and experience what it could have been like to live the life of Robin Hood, Maid Marian and Robin’s Merry Men. Last year’s Robin Hood Festival was a huge success, organised by Nottinghamshire County Council, they expressed a huge thank you to everyone who visited the Robin Hood Festival in 2012. Despite the varied weather thousands visited Sherwood Forest.

42 Retford

On the run up to this year's festival you can find out everything you need to know and receive all the daily updates from the Festival Folk on the Robin Hood Festival Facebook page www.facebook.com/robinhoodfestival. They are the colourful characters you know and love from past years' festivals including Sir Ralph of Epperstone, Hautbois, Simple Tom, the Crazy Dutch Regulars and many others! By liking the Facebook page you will learn more about the Festival Folk as they'll be telling you a bit about themselves, as well as challenging you to answer their questions and giving you medieval tips on beating headaches, treating arrow wounds and much more! Among the activities on offer at the family festival are the King John's Lost Loot puzzle, the Silver Arrow Challenge — an archery contest held under the Major Oak — and re-enactments of Robin and his Merry Men's battles against the Sheriff and his men. Jousting and falconry will both take place on the Wednesday, Saturday and

Sunday, and Archery will take place daily. More jousting tournaments and falconry displays will take place on Saturday and Sunday, while performers, musicians and entertainers will continue to roam the forest for the rest of the week. This year once again on the Saturday evening there will be the Evening of Medieval Merriment starting at 7.30pm. Steven Warrington, who played Robin Hood at the 2012 festival said, “The Robin Hood Festival is a fantastic free family event with lots to do in historic Sherwood Forest for everyone and I look forward to seeing everyone there!”

The event is free and takes place at Sherwood Forest Country Park, near Edwinstowe. Parking costs £5 all day. For more details and the full programme of events, go to www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/robinhood │ Aug 2013

Start off with something simple like sugar free jelly and work your way up to more challenging dishes like fish pie or apple crumble. WRITE A DIARY You can encourage older kids to keep a record of their favourite days, moments and activities throughout the holidays. Postcards and photographs can be stuck to the pages, plus little mementos of days out (shells, leaves etc). SNAP AWAY! Photography is lots of fun for children and a great way to record special memories of days out, lunch with friends or just playing

at home. Let them snap away with a camera and once they’re printed, they can make a scrapbook out of them with notes and funny stories. BUBBLES Bubbles are a great activity for children of all ages. They are cheap and easy and lots of fun. You can set the children challenges such as who can blow the biggest bubble or how many bubbles they can pop in a minute. Younger children will probably enjoy just sitting back and watching them fly around the room. NATURE WALKS Pack some food, pad and pens and take your brood on a big expedition to the local park or nature reserve. Children will love the excitement of planning routes, drawing any birds and animals they see and finding a quiet spot for lunch. You could also set them tasks or create a list of likely sights you'll see so they can tick them off as you come across them. GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS Depending on your child's age, they pose a perfect opportunity to teach them about art, photography, history and the whole notion of creativity. There are often children’s classes and talks designed for children so it's worth calling before-hand to find out more. PARKS Kids love a good session in the park - it's a perfect way for them to socialise with other kids, let off steam and get a healthy dose of exercise. You could arrange to meet friends, or just nip out for a quick half an hour before dinner time. If you need to drive to get to your nearest park, why not make an afternoon of it with ball games, something to eat and a camera to snap all those memorable moments. INSECT WATCHING Give your child a bug box and see how many creepy crawlies they can find in the garden. Once they have a box full ask them to count them and describe which ones they like best and why. Once they've finished studying them they can find a good place to set them free. BLACKBERRY PICKING Give each child a container and go on a blackberry picking mission! Children will love to see how many they can collect and you can use the blackberries to make a delicious pie for dinner. It's a great way to enjoy seasonal food and it doesn't cost a penny.

I don't want to be pushing you out of this glorious heatwave just yet, but in a couple of months it will start to get a little colder, so I'm just going to give you a few gentle hints and tips on how to make sure you make the summer to autumn wardrobe transition very smoothly. If you're anything like me, you like to know what's coming next — not just so you can keep an eye out for items for next month, but so you can slowly start to infiltrate your wardrobe now. “Lively. Radiant. Lush… A colour of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony” — Pantone’s colour of 2013 is emerald. Trend forecasters and fashion houses all over the world latched onto this immediately, but because of the shade you can expect to see this colour within fashion a lot more towards the end of August following right through to the beginning of 2014 as it’s a very rich autumn/winter colour. Cardigans and jeans are, to me, a wardrobe staple. Jeans can be paired with a vest in the summer if you don’t like getting your legs out, and cardigans can be paired with shorts if you don't like getting your arms out. To be quite honest, they can be thrown on at anytime during the summer because it might just not be that warm. Which is why the make such fantastic transitional pieces. Jeans are worn a lot in the autumn and winter

months because they're sturdy, and cardigans are very easy to layer with vest and thin jumpers so keeping you warmer. So why not get them in emerald green now? They'll still look fantastic in this weather when paired with a crisp white colour or even clashing with a bright yellow shade, and you'll be able to pair them with burgundy and navy colours once the leaves start falling.

Driving whilst using your mobile phone Over the past few months I have received a lot of queries regarding what the law is in relation to driving whilst using a mobile phone. In 2007 using a mobile phone whilst driving became a criminal offence that carried points or disqualification. As a result the Police are ready to pull drivers over any time they believe that they are using a mobile phone or any other device. SO WHAT IS ILLEGAL? You must not: • Use your mobile phone whilst driving • Cause or permit a driver to use a mobile phone • Use any other device that transmits data whilst driving • Use a mobile phone whilst supervising a provisional driver PENALTIES FOR USING YOUR PHONE WHILE DRIVING If you’re caught using a hand-held phone whilst driving or riding, you can get an automatic fixed penalty notice. You’ll get three penalty points on your licence and a fine of £60. Your case could also go to court and you could be disqualified from driving or riding which ultimately could lead to a maximum fine of £1,000. Drivers of buses or goods vehicles could get a maximum fine of £2.500. If you already have nine or more points on your licence then you will ‘tot up’ to 12 points and the Magistrates will consider disqualifying 54 Retford

│ Aug 2013

you from driving for up to a minimum period of six months. This will happen unless there are special reasons not to impose the points or unless a disqualification would cause exceptional hardship. NEW DRIVERS If you get six or more penalty points within two years of passing your test, you’ll lose your licence. WHEN YOU CAN USE A PHONE IN YOUR VEHICLE If you’re the driver, you can only use your phone in a vehicle if you: • Need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop • Or if you’re safely parked USING HANDS-FREE DEVICES WHEN DRIVING You can use hands-free phones, sat navs and 2-way radios when you’re driving or riding but if the police think you’re distracted and not

in control of your vehicle you could still get stopped and penalised. WHAT DOES “USING” A MOBILE PHONE, MEAN? A mobile phone means holding it in order to make or receive a phone call or to perform any other function, such as sending a text message. The law also applies to all handheld devices that transmit or receive data such as a TomTom, an iPod or an iPad. So investing in a hands-free kit may be helpful to keep within the law. Just make sure you don’t pick it up in order to operate it. I HAVE RECEIVED SUMMONS FOR USING A MOBILE PHONE WHILST DRIVING BUT I DID NOT DO THIS, WHAT CAN I DO? Sometimes people are falsely or wrongly accused of using a mobile phone whilst driving. However in every case before the UK courts the prosecution must prove that you are guilty beyond reasonable doubt. If you believe that you have been wrongly accused then you should do the following: • Return the relevant part of the summons, clearly indicating that you are going to plead ‘not guilty’ • Contact your mobile phone provider and ask them to provide you with confirmation that you were not on the phone at the time you were accused of being so. • Collate any other evidence that you have (such as a witness statement from a passenger).

HISTORY

Examples of copper and iron strap ends

Our Anglo Saxon past David Cook Priories Historical Society

It is hard to see the humble

origins of modern vast expanse of Worksop today but the town started out as several small hamlets; Gateford, Kilton, Manton, Radford (or Netherton) and Worksop itself. These settlements, apart from Gateford, followed the valley of the river Ryton getly flowing east. Other villages also formed along the river as it curved northwards such as Rayton, Roolton, Osberton and Scofton. Except for Gateford and Radford the ending ‘-ton’ comes from the Saxon term for a settlement within an estate with a special purpose. This also suggests occupation was established around the 7th century. The lack of settlement out of the river valley suggests the area was still wooded, probably due to the poor Magnesian Limestone and Sherwood Sandstone geology making the soil hard to plough and free draining. Until recent times these areas were open parkland, heather, ling or woodland suitable only for deer, sheep, cattle and pigs. Bracebridge derives from the Saxon word ‘brash’ meaning small branches or brushwood suggesting the road was one of the

58 Retford

│ Aug 2013

earliest crossings over the river. The mill on Priorswell Road was almost certainly Saxon being granted as part of the lands given to the Augustinian monks. Worksop sits in the Hatfield Division of Bassetlaw and it has been suggested this was a Saxon Hundred which stretched to the north east of Doncaster. Until modern times the east side of Finningley village right up to the river Torne was part of Nottinghamshire and may indicate part of this early boundary. England did not exist as a unified country and Worksop was part of Mercia and possibly before that Lindsey, to the west was the area known as Lindrick which it has been suggested was the border of the northern country of Northumbria. During the seventh century, Northumbria and Mercia were in a near constant state of warfare with several large battles taking place close by in 617, 633 and 679AD. The later border was defined in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 942AD giving ‘Whitwell Gate’ as the southern boundary marker and local historians have concluded these borders remained as the county line between Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire right until the 1970s county boundaries reorganisation. A Saxon fortification at Worksop to defend the town seems very

likely and probably explains the ‘Work-’ element of its name. Gateford sits on its own high on a hill overlooking the river to the south and the streams in the hamlet hardly required a major crossing, so why the -ford ending? The ending could come from fyrd rather than ford — a Saxon military service performed by the ceorls of the parish possibly taking place at the manor. The earliest spelling known is however ‘Gattef’ and the ford could have come about as standardisation of place names in recent history. The Lovetots charter of 1103AD mentions a ‘Magnum Fossatum’ or town ditch possibly still identifiable from the modern road names Boundary Row and Marecroft, which could originate from ‘Maere’ another word for boundary. Each of the communities in Worksop had open land or commons datable between the 9th and 11th centuries. This shows that the agricultural pattern was defined as part of a community — land in the common was subdivided and then parcelled out to the locals to grow their crops. A single example of this kind of field system survives today at Laxton, near Mansfield. Old field names within the town boundaries shows their early form such as ►

HISTORY

Our Anglo Saxon past ◄ Buslings (heather land), Crowood Close (enclosed woodland) and. Stubbings (tree stumps or possibly coppicing). The river was not the straight cut we see today — in Saxon times it would have been a meandering flood plain with many carrs, Later medieval times saw the river altered with the introduction of Water Meadows, special areas of land set apart with improved irrigation to increase productivity and later still the Victorians cut linear waterways which the river follows to this day The lack of later Viking place names in the local vicinity also suggests the area was well populated before their invasion and ‘new’ settlements associated with them tend to be between poorer soils such as Bilby, Costhorpe, Wigthorpe and Ranby. Nottinghamshire became one of the lands controlled by the Vikings under the ‘five Boroughs of the Danelaw’. Later, after many battles the Saxons eventually paid off the Vikings to leave England and Worksop contributed three Geld units to

this levy. Worksop’s earliest roads carried Viking names: Briggate (Bridge Street), Pottergate (Potter Street), Eastgate and Westgate. The area around Tranker Wood may also originate from the Danish words “Trane” and “Kjarr” which mean herons and moorland respectively, the woodland itself was planted in 1727 so was probably open heathland before this. Few physical finds of Worksop’s AngloSaxon past have been found. Examples include two 9th century cast copper and iron strap-ends with zoomorphic imagery. Both are very roughly executed and have been broken where the leather belt would have joined via riveting. Whether this was done on purpose is unclear. The Norman’s Doomsday Book of 1086 gives us the names of the last Saxon holders of the local manors. In 1066, Alsi held the manor of Worksop, whilst Alwin and Wulfgeat of Radcliffe held Manton manor and Roolton was held by Arnketil and Wulfsi. Before Alsi, his farther Karski had held the

manorial rights. Worksop had a healthy population suggesting the town avoided the ‘Harrying of the North’ when the Normans committed genocide over vast swathes of Yorkshire, wiping out whole communities after the rebellion of 1068. So despite physical and written evidence of the town’s early history being nearly non-existent, we can still piece together the basic details of the size and form of the population concentration during these times via place-name evidence. It is likely graves of the inhabitants still exist, hidden under local fields or under later buildings in the town and items of everyday life may yet still await discovery somewhere close by. Who knows — they may be in your back garden! LIFESTYLE

Hair Couture: Summer hair care Celebrity hairdresser, Richard Ward shares his tips on

looking after your hair in summer.

Plaits are so on trend at the moment they’re also a great way to protect frazzled ends and also to reduce the effects of humidity and damp, drizzly weather. Low-slung, loose, soft plaits worn low at the nape and scarf like over the shoulder are a great look, but the actual braiding technique ensures the majority of ends are ‘tucked in’ and therefore are protected and not exposed to environmental damage, so great for all year round weather protection. People naturally associate humidity as a condition of hot, humid weather but it merely

62 Retford

refers to the moisture content in the atmosphere to protecting against it is key at any time of year. When hair becomes full of moisture it reverts into its naturally wet state, so frizz appears. However, piling on the products only exacerbates the problem. Ensure you use only one product that can mask moisture penetrating into the hair shaft like a protective hairspray which prevents this by coating the cuticle. As the vast majority of women colour their hair now, ensure you top up your colour with a gloss — most good salons should be able to custom mix a couture colour gloss for you which has your specific tones in it. Think of it like staining wood that’s been left out in the sun — tones need refreshing if faded from sun. Think of a show card in a window or how furniture or fabric fades when exposed to sunlight — hair needs that re-injection of colour mid-visit too. MY ULTIMATE SUMMER TIP IS PROTECTION! You wouldn’t go out in the sun without sun cream, so don’t with

│ Aug 2013

your hair. Hair can also burn and get dehydrated just like your skin, so ensure you swap your usual shampoo and conditioner for summer sun formulated ones — regardless if you’re in the UK or abroad, give your hair some extra protection this summer. To prevent colour fade in the sun always use a product that not only cares for coloured hair but has a built in UV protection. UVA and UVB ingredients in a product will prevent UV rays from eradicating the colour molecules, reduce colour fading and protect the hair against sun damage. Whenever possible wear a hat to protect your colour from fading and use a shampoo designed to prolong the colour of your hair. On the flip side though, the sun is a great way to naturally highlight your hair so if you have roots, tie back the bulk of your hair leaving your roots exposed to naturally lighten in the sun! Always have a trim before you go away to minimise the damage and it’s imperative that you use the right products to keep your hair in great condition whilst you’re away. It’s also fine to have your hair coloured before you go away — you don’t want roots or faded locks before you go but my advice is to visit your colourist as soon as you’re back and ask them to refresh the mid-lengths and ends by reapplying your usual colour for a few minutes before you’re due back for the full colour.

Audi A3 made a breakthrough in premium compact hatchback quality and capability with the all-new A3. Redesigned from the ground up following the principles of Audi ultra lightweight construction, the German motor tips the scales an impressive 80kg lighter on average than its forerunner. The same meticulous pursuit of progress is evident in the sophisticated cabin, which genuinely breaks new ground in the class with standards of materials, workmanship and ergonomics that indisputably push the boundaries at this level. British Audi A3 models have launched with a choice of three specification options — SE, Sport and S-Line — all of which are extraordinarily well appointed. The Sport model, on test here, sits on beefy 17 inch alloy wheels and features the ‘Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system’. This enables you to choose from five modes which prescribe the car’s driving characteristics — Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency and Individual. They influence the weighting of the steering, the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal, the shift points of the S-tronic transmission, if fitted, and the parameters used by the optional

adaptive cruise control system. Additional Sport features include a revitalizing two-zone climate control, sports seats, sports steering wheel and aluminium detailing inside and out. On the move, the A3 Sport oil-burner, although perched on firm and athletic springs, is not uncomfortable and it sticks to some of England’s more twisty roads like a limpet. There is plenty of room for you and your passenger in the front, although your friends in the rear seats might find it hard to stretch their legs out. That said, all the seats are supportive and the 2.0-litre 150 TDI lump allows you to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds. But the car doesn’t stop there; where legal the needle will spin way up the dial to 134mph. The rapid acceleration is made all the more easily to achieve thanks to the all-new A3’s slick six-speed manual gearbox. Not only is this first-class hatchback’s turbo diesel engine quick, it is also highly fuel efficient. Engine start-stop technology and energy recuperation systems enable the A3 2.0 TDI Sport to achieve up to 68.9 mpg — and this is the selling point. Yes, the Audi is quick, comfortable and stylish — but, more importantly, it will keep you from frequently forking out at the pumps.

GARDENS

A Beginners’ Guide: Dead heading

You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘deadheading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of

new shoots on shrubs and roses. If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers. However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the seeds and grow your own plants next season, saving plenty of money. Try it with plants with quite large

Jobs for this month • Water regularly — try to water either in the evening or early mornings • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight — brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign • Pinch out the tops of

seeds to start with, like Marigolds or try Aquilega (Grandmother’s Bonnets) or Foxgloves. When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing. They may not grow exactly the same in character and quality as the original plants but it’s great fun to watch the results of your efforts spring into life.

GARDENS

Close encounters of a prickly kind… Gardening is full of cheap thrills,

whether it’s spotting the first snowdrop of spring, a seemingly dead plant suddenly finding a zest for life or growing an eight foot sunflower, but, for me, the pinnacle is realising that we are not alone out there in the borders. The scale and complexity of the garden ecosystem is immense, ranging from microscopic soil organisms to pterodactyl-sized herons, but traditionally gardeners have their ranks of “friendly forces” such as ladybirds and frogs, whilst moles, grey squirrels and aphids are generally considered to be on a par with the Taliban! Personally, I‘m a live and let live kind of chap and have never resorted to any kind of “final solution” when it comes to pesky varmints — even to the extent of once pardoning a fox for slaughtering my chickens and ducks. Yes, I was pretty miffed and very sad for my pets and egg layers, but the sight of a fox

shaped pancake on the road near my house the next day appeared to have been some sort of divine pay-back. Likewise, every time a sparrow hawk vectors in on a friendly robin, or the baby frogs are hoovered up by just about anything big enough to snaffle them, I don’t fret unduly. I’m certainly not sentimental about these natural events and try not to intervene in the cycle of life out in the jungle (not that my garden could in any way be described as a jungle, of course). I’ve long since given up trying to hand-rear fledglings after too many failures and I only ever resort to the likes of slug pellets when absolutely necessary. Even then, I will purge my soul and conscience with a hefty dose of sack cloth and birch twigs. I was listening to an interesting (if somewhat sobering) debate recently about the ethics of conservation and why we should probably just let some species die out naturally. Clearly the panda is worth spending squillions on because it’s a big cuddly teddy of a creature, but what about all the birds, bees, bats and other critters that we used to think of as part of the garden furniture not so long ago? Butterflies are a rare and beautiful sight these days, but they are as much a feature of the garden scene as any delphinium or coiffured rose

Johnathan Wild ponders the decline of garden insects & wildlife and, arguably, much more useful than a big floppy bear. I remember years ago the annual ritual of house martins attempting to build their mud nests under the eaves of our house — much to the annoyance of my house proud parents! Sadly, they’ve not returned in years and must have fallen into the black hole that has also swallowed up what is probably the number one gardener’s friend, the hedgehog. Its disappearance is as mysterious as that of the once omnipresent sparrow and cannot be explained by any obvious factors such as a new generation of hogs that don’t share their elders’ knowledge of the highway code! Thankfully, they’ve not all been run over, because I had the good fortune to bump into one in the vegetable plot the other day. I was leaning on my spade, having a quiet moment recovering from yet more digging, and was not sure if the hog, me or my little dog Woody was the most surprised. Suffice to say I was suitably (and cheaply) thrilled and Woody the dog was very comically prickled!

On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August, following on from their fantastic Clarborough Village Festival, Clarborough Village Ventures would like to invite you to the next event in the calendar! The festival of Lammas celebrates the beginning of the harvest and the first fruits of the year. This year, at St Johns the Baptist’s Church in Clarborough, we will have a wide range of stalls, barbeque, and not to mention the “Pimp my snack” baking

Festival of Lammas competition (Fancy making a huge jam tart? Or maybe a giant sausage roll? Enter our competition!). Whether you have a love for flower arranging (this year’s theme is “Land of Hope and Glory”), a tasty barbeque, or you simply like looking round the stalls, there will be something for all the family! Saturday includes parachuting

Lena Snowden Singers The Lena Snowden Singers held their 26th Annual General Meeting at the end of May. It was a very lively and constructive meeting with a very good turnout. Music and uniform were the main points of discussion and a decision for a new look was almost unanimous. The choir are busy practising for their next two concerts at the moment, and each of these will have some new pieces

included in the programme. The next concert is on Saturday 10th August, at Ordsall Parish Church. This will be followed on Thursday 19th September by our very own performance, The Lena Snowden Annual Concert, with a supper at Hallcroft Methodist Church afterwards. It is hoped that we will be able to unveil our new look at this event. In common with most other choirs we are always on the lookout for

teddies, a bell ringing demonstration, range of stalls, cider pressing, meat raffle, and folk music from a local band. On Sunday, there will be cream teas in church and a chance for you to look at the baking and raffle competition winners, a church service and folk music to finish off the festival! We hope to see you there!

new members. Should anyone be interested is singing very nice music with very nice ladies, then please come along to Hallcroft Methodist Church on Hallcroft Road, on any Thursday at 7.15pm, where you are guaranteed a warm welcome. We will sing almost anywhere and give a concession for charity concerts, weddings are also our speciality. If you would like to make an enquiry, please call either Judy Kewarth on 01777 707023 or Cynthia Paul on 01777 704417.
