Welcome to the October edition of Gainsborough Life magazine. As the best summer we have experienced in years turns in to autumn, for once we’re really looking forward to the changing of the seasons. Previously we’ve felt a little reluctant to uncover our winter wardrobe, when the summer clothes haven’t even had a look-in. Unlike any other time of the year, we seem to follow more structured routines from September onwards, perhaps as the children return to their school routine, we do too? If we’re lucky, for the next few weeks we will still have some good weather, enabling us all to enjoy family fun with all that October has to offer, including Hallowe’en of course. This month it’s the third annual Octoberfest; offering countless fun activities throughout the whole of the month. We have a summary of some of the best on pages six through to nine, yet this is still only a fraction of everything planned. You can pick up your full programme from Gainsborough Old Hall, Gainsborough Library or even West Lindsey District Council offices at Marshall’s Yard. From crafting to browsing markets, to health walks and cycle meets — not to mention the annual Beer Festival — there really is something for everyone! Last month we were talking about giving something back and if you were looking for a great opportunity to do

this, the 2nd Gainsborough Rainbows are growing and want to hear from prospective leaders to help out; why not read about how you could become a girl guiding leader on page 24? October is the national month of baking and as usual our Baking editor, Helen, has come up trumps with a truly scrumptious courgette and walnut loaf recipe on page 14 — let us know what you think. In this edition we have two great articles from local author Darron Childs; on pages 26 and 28 he discusses this month’s history subject — Thomas Miller, and in his role as managing partner of CPA Ethical Wealth, he gives us advice on Estate Planning on page 10. As you know, twice a year we aim to inspire couples who are in the process of planning their wedding day, and in this edition we have our autumn six page wedding feature. We share with you the wedding of local couple James and Nicky, whose perfect day sounded, well, perfect! For daily inspiration, why not ‘like’ our wedding page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lifeweddings? Within this month’s magazine pages, you’ll find many of our great regular features; simply use the contents opposite to jump to your favourites! We hope you have a great month.

YOUR MONEY

Is your estate in order? Darron Childs Managing Partner CPA Ethical Wealth

Have you thought what

would happen to your estate if you were not around to give clear instructions? If you are a parent have you named a guardian in the event of your death? If you think your mother or sister will automatically receive custody of your child (or children) you are mistaken. Talk of Wills, Inheritance tax (IHT) and Estate Planning often seem far removed from day-to-day life, but these arguably are the most important parts of estate planning and wealth preservation. With many of us expected to live longer, this means that there is a greater chance that we may need someone to look after our finances when we are older. It’s not just your own estate affairs that you need to consider. If you are expecting to inherit, it is worth checking that your parents or grandparents affairs are correctly in order to mitigate as much IHT as possible to ensure that wealth is passed on. Did you know that government still collects billions of pounds in IHT

10 Gainsborough

│ Oct 2013

or death duties every year? Even though it is perfectly acceptable and legal to reduce or eliminate this tax with a little careful planning. Many people are unfamiliar that if they give money away, simply to avoid IHT, the estate, or the beneficiary, may still have to pay IHT, especially if a death occurs within seven years. Another misconception is relevant for the millions of Briton’s who have a rental or overseas property. Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) always deem IHT to be charged on worldwide assets, this is why IHT raises so much. Welsh born actor, Richard Burton, lived most of his adult life in America. He married British-born American actress Elizabeth Taylor (twice) had other wives, and died in Switzerland in 1984. At death, was Burton domiciled in Wales, America or Switzerland? Burton had wanted a Swiss domicile for tax purposes. HMRC preferred Wales, all the better to tax the actor's worldwide assets at 40%. A few days after his death, Burton was buried near Geneva, Switzerland. HMRC’s conclusion was that Burton had never changed his

domicile of birth, therefore, deemed him Welsh, and sent a hefty tax bill to his Executors. So I’m no Richard Burton you might be thinking? Neither was Mr S, a client I recently helped, potentially saving him £100,000 in IHT, based on his average UK home, priced around £250,000, a rental property worth £200,000 and savings and investments worth £125,000. On this estate, the cost of doing nothing could be as much as £100,000 in IHT. Talk of estate planning is naturally not the most popular of subjects and it’s easy to make the mistake of putting off something that doesn’t affect you today, or even in the near future. Taking care of the bigger picture however, is an essential part of estate planning, and once dealt with can be hugely reassuring. Of course, as no two individuals are the same, it is essential to take professional advice, ideally from someone who has both the relevant qualifications and necessary experience. Having an Estate Planning or IHT review today could literally save you and your estate a small fortune for tomorrow. Darron Childs is the Managing Partner of CPA Ethical Wealth who specialises in Estate Planning and offers a complimentary Inheritance Tax (IHT) review. Call 01427 811348. HOMES

Is the next property bubble just around the corner? Craig Brown asks if the property market is set to rise again

Whisper it softly, but

house prices are rising. According to the Office for National Statistics, average UK house prices rose 3.1% in the year to June. Recent modest price rises have been driven by heavy increases in London while prices in many of the regions continued to fall, but this time it’s different; every part of the UK has seen some sort of price increase. Most pundits believe this increase is being driven by the launch of the Help to Buy and suggest that prices will rise sharply and unsustainably when the scheme is extended to

all properties (it currently applies only new builds) in January. The fear is that supply won’t rise to meet increased demand, leading to the kind of property bubble that caused the financial crisis. There is a lot of weight behind this argument. We’ve been building between 80,000 and 100,000 houses per year for the last five years, with a natural demand level of around 150,000 so we should be building 250,000 for the next few years, just to catch up. However, I think that the reason we haven’t been building enough houses is because the actual demand hasn’t been there; it’s been suppressed by mortgage rationing caused by lenders demanding 25% deposits or

more. The Help to Buy scheme has had the effect of reducing mortgage rationing and so increasing demand. House prices are measured in cash terms; if you strip out the effect of inflation, they’ve risen by less than half a percent in the last year. Compare that with new housing starts which have risen by 7% to just over 110,000 in the past year. In a town near me, development sites that have been mothballed for the past six years are now swarming with builders and planning permission for over 100 new homes has been granted in the last six months. Once again house builders are adhering to the motto “build it and they will come”.

Helen Stevenson shares her favourite baking treats THIS MONTH Courgette & Walnut Loaf

Hello! and welcome to the October edition of Baking Bliss. I am sure like many of you, my Tuesday evenings have been taken over by watching the Great British Bake off again. I am currently taking part in another

type of bake off — “the great bloggers bake off”, courtesy of my sister, who writes a blog in St Albans, and is also taking part. I am sharing with you the recipe I made for bread week, a courgette loaf with walnuts.

Courgette & Walnut Loaf

METHOD • Coarsely grate the courgettes, put them in a sieve and leave for about 30 minutes to drain • Beat the eggs until light and foamy • Add the sunflower oil, sugar, vanilla extract (if using) and courgettes and mix lightly until combined • Sift the flour and cinnamon into a large bowl, make a well in the middle, pour in the courgette mixture and stir to mix thoroughly • Stir in the chopped walnuts • Pour the mixture into the greased loaf tin and bake in a preheated oven at 180°c for about 50 minutes until firm • Turn out and cool

Friends of Gainsborough Old Hall Gainsborough Old Hall is a unique medieval manor house right in the centre of Gainsborough. Sir Thomas Burgh built it between 1460 and 1480 and it remains much as he left it, to the delight of thousands of visitors each year. The Friends were formed in 1949 to save the building from decay, and to open it to the public. Although the Old Hall is now owned 16 Gainsborough

Immunisation against Flu Phoebe Hodge on protecting yourself and others this winter

weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions, such as long-term respiratory disease or heart disease. It is important to have the jab annually, ideally between September and November. Protection from the vaccine reduces over time and flu strains often change, so a new flu vaccine is produced each year. There are three types of flu virus — A, B and C, with most cases caused by types A and B. Each winter, mostly within a six to eight week period, a different strain of the flu virus causes an outbreak affecting many people and this is referred to as seasonal flu. The viruses

Flu can spread quickly through droplets created when someone with the infection sneezes or coughs, or by touching a surface where the virus has been deposited. For otherwise healthy people, flu can be unpleasant but normally clears up within a week. But complications of flu can be serious and cause a number of deaths each year in the UK. For those at risk of developing serious complications from seasonal flu, vaccination is recommended and is available to them free of charge on the NHS; this includes anyone over 65, pregnant women and those with

most likely to cause seasonal flu are identified in advance each year by the World Health Organisation and then vaccines are made to match them as closely as possible. Side effects of the vaccine are usually very minor, such as slight soreness at the injection site, a mildly raised temperature and aching muscles. The immunisation does not contain any living flu virus and so it cannot cause flu or any other infections. Should you develop a cough or a cold shortly after having a flu immunisation it is a coincidence; the vaccination will not prevent other viral infections which can cause coughs, colds and flu-like illnesses, only the particular flu virus that is expected in the coming winter. The flu vaccine can save lives. If you are at risk, contact your GP to book your vaccination for winter 2013/2014.

HISTORY The Countess of Blessington, Patron of Thomas Miller

Thomas Miller’s Old Gainsborough Darron Childs Local historian and author

On the 24th October 1874, Thomas Miller died at Kennington Park Road, London. Miller was buried at West Norwood cemetery, near Croydon in an unmarked grave. He led an illustrious, if not volatile life as a professional writer. Yet despite his achievements, Miller never really escaped the poverty of his childhood years at Gainsborough. Twelve years before his death, Miller wrote to Henry Lea, the famed American historian and publisher from Rose Cottage no doubt trying to procure work. Five years earlier, from this very location, Miller had written Our Old Town, a collection of true stories and anecdotes connected to Old Gainsborough. Although Miller died in poverty, his arrival and rise into the capital’s literary society 26 Gainsborough

│ Oct 2013

was both remarkable and full of promise. It started with A Day in the Woods, who Miller dedicated to the infamous beauty, The Countess of Blessington. The Times, of May 1836, said, “He is a much better writer than many modern authors who doubtless think themselves his betters”. Through Lady Blessington’s influence Miller was introduced to some of the most famous and influential literary names in society including; Tennyson, Disraeli and Sam Rogers. Samuel Rogers, had been both the friend and enemy of Lord Byron and became known as the famed poet and banker who presided over legendary literary breakfasts at 22 St James’s Place London. Miller’s future appeared assured. However, despite a modest degree of fame, financial success proved more elusive. In 1841 Samuel Rogers

backed Miller financially as a bookseller and publisher in his own right. However, the business proved unsuccessful and Miller quickly fell back into poverty. These were times of incredible social change and innovation and the coming of the railways mark the watershed between Millers younger years and later life. As Miller’s years advanced the best he could hope for was frequent contributions to magazines and articles as well as a constant stream of stories for children. “Our Old Town is a strange, rambling, twisting dreamy looking place” Miller wrote in 1857 but never mentioned Gainsborough by name. In 1993, in “Golden Memories”, I retraced the life of Miller back to 4 Sailors Alley Yard, off Bridge Street, Gainsborough. It was here in 1807 that Miller was born and raised single handed. During his childhood he forged a special relationship with Thomas Cooper who Miller was with on an almost daily basis between 1811 and 1816. They would both become famous writers, and Cooper subsequently, a noted Chartist and evangelist. A Thomas Cooper memorial church is situated on Lincoln’s High Street. In 1997, to mark the 190th anniversary of his birth, The Delvers placed their first blue plaque on Bridge Street opposite where Miller was born. It was remarkable that 190 years had lapsed and Miller had no physical memorial in his native town. These sad state affairs gave birth to The Delvers Blue Plaque Trail, an ambitious idea to mark other famous people and places associated with Old Gainsborough. Members of the public interested in The Blue Plaque Trail and Old Gainsborough can attend a “Delvers night” on Tuesday 12th November 2013 at the Benjamin Adlard School from 7.00pm to 9.00pm for an Old Gainsborough slideshow. Thomas Miller remains the most prolific professional working class authors of his age. His output was immense and varied; poetry, historical novels, short stories, flora and fauna, guide-books, articles and stories for children. This was finally acknowledged in 1874 when Benjamin Disraeli granted Miller a £100 a year pension from the Royal Bounty Fund at the petition of Tennyson, Browning and ►

HISTORY

◄ other patrons. Sadly, Miller collected only one installment before his death. In his younger years Disraeli had written “Sybil” or a Tale of Two Nations, inspired by the Chartist movement and the all too frequent desperate conditions of the working class. Four years earlier, in 1841, Miller had written his most popular novel “Gideon Giles the Roper” a protest of the unjust laws and oppression that existed in

Victorian England, set against the Trent valley countryside he loved so much. Thomas Miller remains one of Old Gainsborough’s most important names. Thomas Miller’s Trent valley countryside always has had a wealth of interesting places to explore. On September 4th 2013, I was delighted to welcome over 20 visitors, mostly from London, who met at The Gainsborough Old Hall to learn more about the town’s early origins, its historic importance and the golden age which produced an array of Georgian treasures. The visiting members of The Georgian Group, were also introduced to The All Saints Parish Church, then by coach to The Lindens, Knaith Hall, The 22 St James’s Place London, home of Samuel Rogers Chateau and Gate

Burton Hall. My fellow guides were Sue Ritchie, John and Rosie Burke and Tony Morris who all gave fascinating insights into places on the landscape that we casually pass every day, without perhaps knowing their story. Many of these places are now over 250 years old and are therefore invaluable as an anchor to tell us more about who we are, through links that connect us to our ancestors. Thomas Miller had a certain gift as a writer with the ability to know that the rich and poor, the high and low were bound by the same threads. Despite all the odds set against him, Thomas Miller triumphed to become what he always wanted to be; a Victorian working class author. Darron Childs is the author of The Last Baronets of Old Gainsborough which is available in a hard back collectors’ edition with over 100 pages by telephone on 01427 811348. OPTIONS

In Lincolnshire there are a range of different transport options which link the county’s market towns and villages.

IN LINCOLNSHIRE

Lincolnshire’s Bus Service Network: There is an extensive bus service network operating across Lincolnshire. This ranges from the high frequency Interconnect services to the rural bus services which provide a vital community link. Go to www.lincsbus.info or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233 to find out more.

Call Connect is a unique bus service. It does not run to a set timetable, but responds to passenger requests and then links up to the main interconnect bus services. Anyone can use the service but journeys have to be pre booked. Go to www.lincsinterconnect.com or call 0845 243 3344 to find out more. Voluntary Car Schemes are operated by volunteers using their own cars, to provide transport to local people for a small fee. Journeys are organised by a co-ordinator and available to anyone unable to access public transport. Go to www.lincstravel.info to search for car schemes in your village or call 01507 609 535. Information leaflets about all the different ways to travel are available from Libraries, Tourist Information Centres and Community Access Points. Our perfect day James and Nicky Walker share the experience of their big day

When we met on the dance floor in a French ski resort four years ago, neither of us could have imagined that a snowboarding girl from the south coast living in London and a skiing northern guy from Nottinghamshire would be trying the knot on Saturday 7th September this year. Despite having to overcome many challenges so far, we’re inseparable. After moving to live with each other in Lincoln, the next step was getting engaged at the F1 in Valencia last summer. Since then it’s been 15 months of planning to make our day 32 Gainsborough

reflect how much we mean to each other. I work at the BMI Lincoln hospital as the physiotherapy lead. I moved to the role after working for 10 years at a number of London teaching hospitals, the last being Guy’s and St.Thomas’ where I ran the spinal pain physiotherapy teams. James, over the last 10 years, has worked his way through the ranks of his fourth generation family haulage business, Walker and Sons of Tuxford, and is now the UK transport manager. In his free time James races Volkswagens in a competitive championship, winning in 2012, and after the wedding planning chaos, he hopes to get back into it in

2014. With a little persuasion a few months before the wedding, James took up personal training at OutKlass Fitness in East Drayton and thanks to his trainer Sam Magee, he really was “big for his big day”. I am originally from Eastbourne, so we decided to marry in my home town. Having lived away for many years, it meant us attending church 200 miles away from our home twice a month for six months. But at least we had eight hours of car time every two weeks to talk things through! Our venue was Birling Manor, a beautiful private house near to Beachy Head and the rolling South Downs. The venue had space for a marquee as well as having a swimming pool and a 13th Century hall in case of inclement weather. It was perfect for us — a beautiful canvas that we could put or stamp on! The crazy thing that we found about weddings was that as soon as the “W” word is mentioned, it seemed the prices of things just kept rising. So with the help of my parents, we decided to use some well-recommended local people. I spent many hours on internet sites like Pinterest to get some ideas on how to make a fantastic personal statement without spending a small fortune. We knew we wanted a traditional day, but thought about some quirky extras that would make the day memorable — especially for the many people who were travelling so far to join us. We had the most fantastic folded multi-card invites made by Emily at Whyte Weddings based in Nottinghamshire, in our chosen wedding colours. I also designed a map on a postcard of the locations around the town that guests would need as well as the local taxi and contact numbers, and included them with the invites. We really wanted to make it as easy for people as possible to be organised. For the day, we had two lifeguards for most of the reception and had sent the kids their own invites telling them to bring their swimwear. We also booked a photo booth from COCO photo booths, which was a black cab with too many props to mention in the back. We had a brilliant photographer Simon Crummy, a lovely laid back contemporary artist who milled around innocuously capturing all of our lovely family and friends. His website is www.somebodyshootme.co.uk. We’re so pleased we made so much

Weddings effort making the day our own, as it was all our personal touches that people commented on the most. Yes, they took a lot of time, but it was fun to do, and saved a lot of money in the long run. Along with my friend Kay, I made sloe gin a year earlier and thanks to a local Demi John bottle company www.miniatureglassbottles.co.uk, we made personal favours for all of our adult guests. The kids had a mini box full of toys each which was a winner for keeping them occupied. For name settings, everybody’s name was hand written on a pebble from Eastbourne beach and our wedding colours were inspired from peacock feathers. We wrapped one of these in each napkin, giving everyone one to take home. These came from www.froufroufeathers.co.uk. Flowers were in-keeping with the bridesmaids’ bouquets containing teals, greens, whites and feathers. We made our own confetti from rose petals and bunting using wonder web! A strange thought, but toilets are a place where people spend a lot of time at weddings. So we set out toiletries in each loo but also covered the walls with handwritten love quotes. We also made a map of our honeymoon plans in each loo as we had asked for contributions and wanted people to know where we were going. Our cake was a beautiful wrapped multi-tiered cake made with love by Danielle Gotheridge based in Nottingham, a cake designer with a really unusual flare. In the marquee we had simply dressed candelabras, some soft up-lighters but also had some bunting and we also set up a washing line with soft pegs for ladies to hang their hats, we’ve both seen so many ruined hats at previous weddings! The day before, we set up the marquee in the morning, so that the bridesmaids and girls went to a spa and the boys to a pub, allowing everyone to be relaxed and ready for the next day. My dress was made by Ian Stuart, and sleeve cuffs were added. The Bridesmaids dresses were made to measure full length in teal from www.evica.co.uk and the flower girls wore layered lace with teal sashes. The groomsmen were dressed by Andrew J Musson from Lincoln and as always the suits were impeccable. Our wedding day was truly amazing from start to finish! A lot of our guests

had been caught up in a huge driving delay on the way down when the Dartford crossing was closed on Friday night entailing up to 12 hour trips, yet by the time the wedding came round at 1.00pm the next day, everyone had settled into the wedding spirit. A highlight from the church was when a family friend, Sarah-Jane Brandon, an amazing opera singer, sang to the congregation whilst we signed the register; making a normally dull part for guests really quite magnificent. One of each of our brothers did a reading; both personalising it without us knowing! We left the church with James driving the wedding car and we drove along the coast road to a spot near Beachy Head for some photos of the two of us. This was a great idea as we both appreciated the 20 minutes together alone after all of the church excitement. We rejoined the party and had amazing weather for the drinks reception and our good friend Gabby playing classical guitar. We decided on having a receiving line, and although it was a little drawn out, we’re grateful for the decision, because it meant we were able to say hello to everyone personally. So many people had told us both before the wedding that on the day we should keep stopping and taking it in as the time just disappears. This was great advice and were both glad we did this.

Please mention Gainsborough Life when responding to any adverts

Yet we’ve also got so many other ways to remember our day, the photos, a video made by Caroline Burton a kind family friend, the photo booth scrapbook, our guest book and the table cameras. We had this dream of how we wanted the day to go and we felt so touched that in the few days before, so many of our friends wanted to come and help with the set up so that it came to fruition without any hiccups. Ultimately, we feel really blessed that it was all so perfect from the logistics and running to the weather and that we got to share it all with those we love — if only we could do it all again! Make your money work for you Leanne Lodge on how not to break the bank planning your big day

It’s no secret that the average wedding costs a small fortune these days. Latest figures suggest that the national average is around £20,000. Does the figure make you go pale at the thought? Well don’t worry, with detailed planning, but more importantly being decisive from the start about what your budget will be, is the key to making your money work for you. Here’s our key questions to help you get started. WHO WILL BE CONTRIBUTING TO THE BUDGET? Gone are the days when the bride’s father paid for the lot! It’s now more common for both sets of parents to contribute to the wedding fund. However one of the most popular scenarios is for the bride and groom to actually go it alone, completely paying for their wedding with their own money. Why? The sheer cost is the main reason, yet with weddings being so individual to each bride and groom the other main reason is that they then own their own poetic licence, lock stock and barrel! The key to owning your wedding budget and being in control is simply organisation and discipline! SAVE NOW! No matter what your financial circumstances, you need to start saving! 34 Gainsborough

│ Oct 2013

The most common aim is to save around 10-20% of your combined monthly income. How much you need and how long you save for is simply down to what you want your budget to be. It may be that you actually contribute different totals in the end. Agree what you think is fair, based on important factors such as; individual salaries and debts or other commitments you may have. Cost cutting methods work well, just as you may do whilst saving for a holiday. USE A DEDICATED ACCOUNT AND BE SENSIBLE The only way to be sure where you are with your savings is to use a dedicated account for it to be held in. It will make keeping track of where you are so much easier. Many couples actually borrow their wedding fund. It can be an extremely practical way to pay for your wedding, however be sensible and treat this idea with the caution it deserves! Using a credit card to pay for your wedding is something that should be avoided at all costs for obvious reasons. The other thing to do when planning your budget is to try to keep yourself grounded. By all means plan the lavish, but unless you have the budget of Posh and Becks, realise that at least on some things the average couple has to compromise on their ideas. FOLLOW THE TREND! It is possible to have an absolutely

How do I know how much to spend? Average wedding costs ......£20,000 Reception to include food and drink 40% ..............£8,000 Venue/ceremony/ musicians 15% ......................£3,000 Outfits 10% ............................£2,000 Flowers/entertainment/ transport 10%........................£2,000 Photography/video 7% .........£1250 Stationery 3% ............................£750 Honeymoon 10%...................£2,000

fabulous wedding, all planned on a tight budget. Most brides now will plan to ‘do it themselves’ somehow rather than employing others somewhere along the line. Ranging from; making their own favours, to picking up their wedding lingerie on eBay. The other great way to save is to think about your circle of influence — who you know. Does your best friends partner have a flash car you could borrow to take you to the church? Think out of the box and you will be amazed at what you can come up with.

BEX KNIGHT picks out the best fashion picks for men this season

Follow on Twitter: @bexxxknight Men’s fashion never

changes dramatically, so it can be easy to get caught wearing the exact same things every week, month or year. Whilst this is fantastic for key pieces such as a suit or trench coat, you don’t want to get left behind style-wise. So for all of you fashionconscious men, I’ve put together three of my favourite trends for the coming season. All looks are very subtle, but can easily, and quickly, bring your look up to date. Turn-ups on trousers have been highly popular in fashion but this season it’s being replaced with a short high-hem. Burberry, along with many other designers sent their models down the catwalk with ankles fully on show and trousers cut slim for a refined and tailored look. This brings me smoothly into

36 Gainsborough

my next simple but effective trend for this season. At London Fashion Week, trousers on the catwalk were still sticking to a slim silhouette, but no ridiculously tight pants were to be seen. Even the Top Man catwalk had some slouchy and relaxed looking jeans to show us. As you may have noticed in any high street shop, print is a key trend and it seems to be getting more garish. You may or may not be pleased to know, that loud prints are continuing into next season. Brand KTZ had world maps on bomber jackets, designers Agi & Sam sent out their models covered headto-toe in prints, while designer Christopher Raeburn went from the safari to the street. MOTORING

First Drives: Škoda Rapid Tim Barnes-Clay takes a spin in Škoda’s foray into the hatchback market

The new hatchback from Škoda Max speed: 118 mph 0-60 mph: 10.6 secs MPG: 64.2 Power (bhp): 103 Torque (lb/ft): 184 CO2: 114g/km Price: £17,850 Pros: Economy Kit Practicality Cons: Not so rapid Interior

42 Gainsborough

has space for five-up and, in 1.6 TDI guise, can extract up to 64.2mpg out of a tank. Also, with emissions of just 114g/km, the car is cost-effective to run as a company vehicle. When it comes to thrills and spills the Škoda Rapid isn’t really quite as speedy as its name suggests. The oil-burner under the bonnet of the Czech-made motor powers it from rest to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and upwards to 118mph. It’s fairly slow going, and with only five gears it’s annoyingly easy to crunch the gearstick up into a non-existent sixth cog. As well as the less than prompt performance the Rapid feels skittish at motorway speeds and the steering is too light to inspire confidence. The plastic trim is disappointing compared with, say, the more executive-focused Superb but, in its favour the flagship ‘Elegance’ grade, on test here, does come stacked with kit. Key features include cruise control; electrically heated door mirrors, multi-function steering wheel controls, Bluetooth and air conditioning.

│ Oct 2013

It’s easy to get comfortable behind the wheel too; the height adjustable seating and adaptable reach/rake steering column makes this possible. If you opt for the Elegance model you’ll also benefit from 16-inch alloys, cornering front fog lamps, rear electric windows, and chrome interior detailing. But no matter which variant of the Rapid you drive, you’ll find access to the boot easy and the load space square and practical in this, the seventh car in Škoda’s award-winning range. Crucially, With Benefit in Kind (BIK) ratings from only 14 percent, the Škoda Rapid is expected to provide a shot in the arm to the brand’s rapidly growing fleet sales. On-the-road pricing starts from £12,900 for the Rapid 1.2-litre 75PS in entry level S trim, rising to £17,850 for the Rapid 1.6 TDI CR 105PS in flagship Elegance spec.

Decorative and Fine Arts Society learns the art of advertising Former School Master and now Historian and Artist, Harry Fletcher presented the September lecture to over 100 members of the Fine Arts Society at the Trinity Centre for their first meeting after the summer break. The ‘Art of Advertising’ from its early beginnings had to state its intention and the message it was trying to portray; the power of the poster had arrived. Harry started with the work of Jules Charet, ‘Father of the Poster’, an accomplished lithographer who designed the famous posters for the entertainers of the Moulin Rouge in the Paris of the 1880s and also of Rodolphe Salis and Alphonse Mucha; their well-known images are still on sale in art shops today — who at the time were inspiration for the great Toulouse-Lautrec . Japanese art of the late 19th century also proved a strong

influence in the development of eye-catching and bold lithographic posters which were quickly adopted throughout Europe and America. Harry's excellent illustrations followed these iconic styles into the silk printing of Art Nouveau and Art Deco and onto the 20th century recruitment posters of World War I, the Ocean Liner, the Railway and the Cinema — including work of David Hockney and Andy Warhol. Collectors in the saleroom today can pay seven figure sums for an original advertising poster! The next meeting of the Society is on Thursday 3rd October, when Charles Hajdamach will speak on Venetian Glass and its Influences. Visitors are always welcome, the entrance fee is £5.00 and for membership call Mrs B Jones on 01427 788568. Please book lunch by the preceding Monday of Nadfas lecture day with Rachel on 01427 838780.

drop of dew upon the end of a glorious green stem of grass, caught in the sun-light of an early morning. The grass is cut to an exceptionally accurate length, at times it is tall and wild, other times it is short and smooth. Your black and white shoes will caress the grass, though provide excellent grip for your day’s venture. Equipped with a bag full of familiar equipment you can begin a game that isn’t just for old men. This truly British sport can be enjoyed by any age and any gender. The sport I am referring to is golf. Gainsborough and the surrounding area is home to some lovely courses. In fact the two at the top of Gainsborough are owned by the highly well-known company Ping. The two courses are Karsten Lakes and Thonock Park and both are 18 holes long with a mixture of 3, 4 and 5 pars (the amount of shots it should take to sink the ball). Both courses are beautiful and well maintained and manicured by devoted green-keepers. Code of conduct is high and prices aren’t cheap. You will also have to provide your own equipment as no hire service is available. Ping also provides a driving range

where you can develop your game with driving and chipping practice In Messingham, north of Gainsborough, there are two courses available. Separated by a single road, one course has nine holes and the other has 18. The club, Grange Park Golf Club, is a family-run business who have been in the leisure industry for almost 25 years. Here, prices are considerably less than at Ping, but that doesn’t mean the quality is. Also available at Grange Park are tennis courts and fisheries as well as a camping and caravan site for those who want to spend a few days to enjoy every activity. Heading south you can find Millfield Golf Course in Laughterton. The nine hole course is less well maintained but it does cost less than £5 to play on it. It’s a great course for amateurs with bunkers, trees and different length holes and different grass heights and for the price you can’t go too wrong. Millfield also has two 18 hole courses which are of a much better condition, are more expensive and dress codes apply. If you are looking to get into the sport, get yourself a seven iron and a putter, and start off at Millfield nine holes with it having no dress code, and being a simple course you can easily get into the swing of things.

YOUR MONEY

Money Saving Expert With Martin Lewis Get more tips from Martin at www.moneysavingexpert.com

If you live in rented accommodation, you don’t need your landlords permission to save money. There are many things you can do to slash bills around the house. With the numbers of tenants rising, rents are fiercely expensive in many areas, so never has it been more crucial. Here are my top tips for renters: RENTERS HAVE A RIGHT TO SWITCH AND SAVE ON ENERGY (EVEN PREPAID) If you pay the gas and electricity bill directly (not via the landlord), and it isn’t specifically banned in your tenancy agreement, you can and should compare and switch. Don’t stick with the previous tenants’ supplier, as it can be costly. Always do a meter reading as soon as you move in. You don’t need your landlords permission to do this. Even if your contract says you can’t switch, you may be able to challenge it. Communicate with the landlord, and get in touch with Citizens Advice for help. IS YOUR DEPOSIT PROTECTED? According to Shelter, a fifth of private renters don’t know if their deposit’s been protected. By law, from 6th April 2007 in England and Wales most private landlords must use a Government-backed deposit protection scheme, giving you rights. CHEAP CONTENTS INSURANCE If you rent, your landlord is responsible for buildings insurance, so you only need contents cover. As for what each covers, a quick way to picture this is to think of all the stuff that’d fall if you turned your home upside down. If only you and/or your family live in the home then getting the cheapest cover is quite simple. Simply combine www.confused.com and www.comparethemarket.com 50 Gainsborough

│ Oct 2013

to bag the maximum number of quotes in the minimum time. Then check www.avica.co.uk and www.directline.com, which they miss. If you live in a house-share, getting cover from mainstream insurers can be tricky. A locked room helps– if you don’t have one, ask your landlord. While comparison sites like www.confused.com, www.gocompare.com and www.moneysupermarket.com say they provide flat-share quotes, when I’ve tried the results were patchy and included some who wouldn’t actually cover you, so always double check. You may find a specialist such as www.homeprotect.co.uk or a local broker via the British Insurance Brokers Association (www.biba.org.uk) easier. LANDLORDS MUST ASK BEFORE ENTERING Landlords may legitimately need to come in occasionally for repairs and inspections, and should arrange a time with you beforehand. If they enter without asking, you can ask them to stop. If it continues, it can be considered harassment. Contact Citizens Advice or a solicitor for help, or the police if you feel threatened. FURNISH FOR FREE– SOFAS, BEDS, TVS AND MORE If you’ve gone unfurnished or part-furnished, then online giveaway sites can help you for nothing. Hundreds of top-quality

goodies are available daily for free from web communities like uk.freecycle.org and www.ilovefreegle.org. Some is tat, but some is treasure. Just ensure you follow the sites’ etiquettes. DON’T REDECORATE WITHOUT THE LANDLORD’S PERMISSION You generally need to return the property in the state you got it, though minor wear and tear should be allowed. Get the landlords permission in writing to put up shelves or repaint, unless you want to un-decorate before you leave. Don’t get hammer-happy — nails destroy walls and deposits. Specially-designed picture strips will hold up pictures without damage. LETTING FEES CAN BE PERVERSE AND NASTY, SO CHECK Renters can be hit by huge and unfair fees. Some reported to me include £120 for permission to buy a dog or £60 for photocopying a contract. Sadly, there’s little regulation over these charges, but at least make sure you know what they are so you avoid them. FREE BOILERS Four big energy providers—EDF, Eon, Npower and Scottish & Southern—are giving away boilers (typically worth £2,300) for nothing, plus loft and cavity wall insulation. You don’t have to be a customer to qualify. You need to have an inefficient/broker boiler and be on a low income/get incomerelated benefits or pension credit. To check, call the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234 (England and Wales).

HEALTH

Is milk brilliant? I want to switch gears for a second here and talk about the debate between skimmed milk and whole milk. In line with low fat theories and many diets, we are told that skimmed milk is better because the fat content is lower than whole milk. Most of us, including myself, used to go with this theory. The question is why do we think this is a good idea? The fact that skimmed milk makes up 60% of the milk consumption in this Country and roughly the same amount are overweight or obese doesn’t surprise me much! Let me bring in our old friend “common sense” for a second. Why on earth would you interfere with any food? This, for me at least, is the real question we need to ask ourselves. I discussed the benefits of drinking milk previously and that it isn’t an essential part of the human diet after weaning. Based on this, why would we drink something that firstly we don’t need, and secondly mankind has interfered with? THE HISTORY OF SKIMMED MILK When you start reading about skimmed milk, the first think I read was this... “Historically skimmed milk was used to fatten pigs”. This doesn’t 54 Gainsborough

│ Oct 2013

fill you with much confidence about the health benefits of skimmed milk. I can’t really find the exact time or reason when skimmed milk was first made but it looks like the late 1500’s by all accounts. Put simply, skimmed milk is full fat milk with all the butter fat removed. This was traditionally done after milking, however, it is rumoured that farmers in New Zealand have genetically modified some cows to be able to produce skimmed milk; which is worrying! WHAT IS TAKEN OUT TO MAKE SKIMMED MILK? When skimmed milk is made, the butter fat is taken from whole milk. This does not enhance the quality or nutrient content of the milk. It actually makes it worse. This is because alongside fat, also goes the fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E & K. These vitamins are responsible for everything from bone health to strengthening the immune system. The other factor to consider is that milk is quite sugary (lactose) if the fat is removed then all you are left with is very sugary milk. This can have benefits after a weight session for example if you are looking to get some glycogen into the muscles but for most of us, the

slowing of the insulin is the hormone that drives excess fat storage. When I have used whole milk with people rather than skimmed milk, the effect has been increased fullness for longer and reductions in sugar cravings. SKIMMED MILK CLA AND CANCER This gets a bit controversial now I guess. CLA is Conjugated linoleic acid and it’s found in eggs and grass fed animals like cows. The problem with low fat and grain fed cattle, the level of CLA are depleted. Unless you are buying good quality full fat organic milk (or even raw milk) you will not get the benefits of CLA. CLA has been shown to help the body metabolize fat better and help with weight management. In relation to CLA, CLA is a powerful anti-carcinogen and can offset any potential damage of betacellulin. To keep this as simple as possible, CLA is only found in the fat of milk so remove the fat and remove the CLA. The question I will always ask, is milk necessary? The answer to that question (from a nutrient perspective) is no but if you do like milk make sure you get good quality whole, full fat milk. That may be good news to some of you!

GARDENS

Follow us: /digitchallenge

Jobs for this month • Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. • Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to four posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years time.

A Beginners’ Guide:

Garden Ponds If you are lucky enough to have a

pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth. Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later! In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants. If you have a pump to run a

fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before winter hibernation. If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out. Having said all that, I’ve actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

Plant of the month: Agapanthus Originating in South Africa, these bold and striking plants have become extremely popular in recent years, entering into a modern garden setting with as much ease as they do a traditional mixed border. Often known as African Lilies, they are tall and statuesque but despite their high maintenance appearance, actually require

58 Gainsborough

│ Oct 2013

little upkeep, and with a little bit of TLC will survive a British Winter outdoors. They are drought tolerant and a good choice for coastal areas, coping well with wind and salty air. Their flowers will peak during July and August and whether or not they are grown in pots or in beds, always make sure they are mulched during winter.

World Arthritis Day Saturday 12th October sees the official day for the year-round WAD campaign which this year focuses on ‘Living Better, Ageing Well’. Arthritis has various types of which Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis are perhaps the most common. The disease is debilitating and around 10 million people in the UK are currently affected. Indeed it is not restricted just to adults — people of all ages can be affected including children. It inflames joints and can cause aches and pains in joints, bones and muscles. Simple daily tasks can become difficult and painful but there are many people, services and products that can help adjust to manage with work and home life. How severe and for how long the affects last vary on the type of arthritis diagnosed and at the moment there is no known cure. Gentle exercise, good diet and pain management techniques are ways of taking control over the condition.
