Welcome to the November edition of Gainsborough Life. It’s a very tired Gainsborough Life team that greets you this month! We’re certainly being kept busy that’s for sure, but as ever we’re grateful for your support. We want to say a huge thank you to our staff for their unquestionable commitment to both us and the business. They have coped so well with everything that’s been thrown at them over the past few months, thank you guys! Thank you for all the interest in our Sales Advisor position we advertised in last month’s edition, and this month were advertising for our next rising star — a talented Junior Graphic Designer, please see the details on page 10. Since we got married a couple of months ago, life has certainly thrown us a few curve balls, and it’s at times like these when you can’t help but question why things happen. But then usually something happens to bring you back down to earth and you realise just how lucky you actually are! A constant for us, is this month each year when we remember all those who have given their lives for us to be able to live with the freedom we do today. Please ensure you support Remembrance Sunday and more details of a

special service and lunch can be found on page 18. With just weeks to go, you cannot escape the fact that we’re now on an official countdown to Christmas, and if that’s not a time to be truly grateful — then we don’t know what is! There’s so much to see and do around the town and its villages, and there’s no getting away from all the local Christmas Fairs and Fetes. As a consumer, do you do everything you can to support our town’s independent retailers? Christmas shopping is a great time for us to all ensure that our hard-earned pounds are spent wisely and it’s because of this that Gainsborough’s Independent Retailers have come up with a great incentive to help you do just that — read all about it on page 12. This month’s magazine is a bumper edition, with useful articles on how to throw the perfect bonfire party on page 28, a fabulous recipe to serve at your get-together on page 46 and so much more! For the full list of things to see and do, please check out all the events listed on our website at www.gainsboroughlife.com. We hope you have a fabulous month and enjoy this month’s magazine.

Christmas lights switch on Gainsborough Town Council

is delighted to announce the details of this year’s Christmas Lights Switch on event. This year’s event will take place in the Market Place on Friday 16th November, from 4.00pm to 8.00pm. There will be fair rides available from 4.00pm onwards. The build up to the lights switch on will be provided by the much admired singing and guitar playing of local and well known soloist Lizzie Goddard. The switch on at 6.00pm will be led by the charismatic Town Crier John Derbyshire with the lights being switched on by the Gainsborough Citizen of The Year. The popular local band StereoEpic will then take to the stage to entertain everyone. So, why not come along to the event? Come and have fun and help create a great atmosphere for all.

Join us for a free Christmas lunch

If you are facing this year’s Christmas Day alone, then we’d like to invite you to the Gainsborough Christmas Day Lunch. Our Committee would like to send out a warm invitation for you to come and join us for a free traditional Christmas Lunch. The festive meal will be held on Christmas Day at Gainsborough House, Parnell Street, starting with coffee, tea and mince pies being served at 11.00am. To ‘get into the mood’, carols will be sung accompanied by the piano and ‘Santa Claus’ will be distributing presents. Transport to and from the venue can be provided for anyone living in Gainsborough, Lea or Morton who cannot get under their own steam. Now in its 37th year, the Christmas Lunch is provided free of charge thanks to generous donations from churches, charities, business

people and the public. If anyone would like to help us make Christmas more cheerful for some 50 to 60 people who would otherwise be on their own, donations of any kind would be most welcome. They can be sent to Mr Michael Wragg, our Chairman, care of David Belton at Gainsborough House Community Centre, 18 Parnell Street, Gains borough, DN21 2NB. If any reader expects to be on their own and would like to come as a guest, an invitation letter can be picked up at Gainsborough House Community Centre, telephone 01427 811160. Applications to attend should be returned to Gainsborough House by the 3rd December. Further information can be obtained by calling 01427 616852 or 07766 744035.

Lincolnshire’s own memorial to its heroes of the skies needs your memories During World War II over 25,000

aircrew from Bomber Command, flying from Lincolnshire, died. To mark their sacrifice, a memorial will be erected on the top of Canwick Hill, in Lincoln. In addition there were many Lincolnshire men serving in Bomber Command outside of the county who also died. The chosen site overlooks Lincoln Cathedral which was a major landmark for crews leaving Lincolnshire and was a navigation point for those lucky enough to return. 46% of all Bomber Command’s

casualties were based in Lincolnshire. The project, led by the LordLieutenant of Lincolnshire, has support from all sectors of the community including the Bomber Command Association, Local Councils, County Council, Lincolnshire Lancaster Association, Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire, active RAF stations in the county and elsewhere, Lincoln Cathedral and the University of Lincoln. Many other individuals and organisations have also pledged their support.

COMMUNITY

The formal launch is planned to take place in May 2013, at RAF Scampton, as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations of the famous Dambusters Raid which left from Lincolnshire in May 1943 as part of Bomber Command. It is hoped to have the memorial completed by May 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of the official ending of hostilities in World War II. In September the “Your Memories” section of the website was launched which invites anyone with a story about the Command whether as a member of the crew, supporting personnel, Lincolnshire resident or family member to participate. Our hope is to collect a wide range of stories, from differing perspectives to put on show at the launch and eventually at the Memorial. Some stories have already been uploaded and are available to read on the Your Memories page of the website. To post your memories please send them with any photos to info@ lincsbombercommandmemorial.com.

Vorbo Interiors is a family run business. John and Valerie have over 30 years experience with curtains and blinds, even though during that time tastes and fashions have changed, one thing has remain consistent — quality. Vorbo’s curtain makers are John Lewis-trained and have been making curtains for nearly 40 years. In fact, the combined experience of the Vorbo family is over 150 years! All curtains are handmade, with heavy sateen lining as standard sewn in by hand with the side and bottom hems

also being sewn in by hand. Vorbo’s supplied and fitted blinds are of top quality with the headrail systems carrying from one-year up to life-time guarantees, depending upon the type. The fabrics are also of top quality being treated to protect against UV rays and the prevention of soiling. John says “There is not a fabric or design I am not familiar with — I know what fabrics will work and what won’t, quality at affordable prices is what Vorbo is all about, you have to have passion to consistently deliver a top quality product that the customer can enjoy for years to come, we at Vorbo have that passion.”

Starting over 30 years ago in Nottingham, John began by running a large curtains and soft furnishing business that specialised in refurbishing hotels. Taking the experience gained from this demanding environment John then progressed to owning his own curtain business, a few years later expanding into blinds, which is where he has been ever since. Nine years ago John and Valerie moved to Gainsborough and brought all their experience and passion with them, starting off in small premises on the Heapham Road Industrial Estate, before moving to bigger premises in Blyton two years ago. Valerie says “We now have the room to display some of the wonderful fabrics we can offer in both curtains and blinds, people can come in and browse the huge choice of fabric, curtain poles, finials and styles of blind at their own leisure in comfortable, bright and cheery surroundings, we also have a bigger car park making visiting much more convenient.” John says “We also offer a free home consultation and selection service, not only for people who are unable to get to our showroom but to all our customers. We want our customers to enjoy their blinds or curtains for years to come and it helps enormously to see the fabrics in the home environment to ensure they are exactly right.”

LEISURE

Park for free, thanks to town’s independent retailers In the run up to the festive season, let’s open our eyes to the great independent shops and businesses that are in and around our town centre. We want you to embrace and support all independent businesses, whether it’s the butcher, the baker, accountant, the local eateries, the florist, etc. If every adult in Gainsborough spent just £5 per week of their current budget in our local shops and businesses instead of at the big supermarkets or retail outlets, it would mean an extra £4.6 million a year into our local economy. This means our local town will thrive, supplying us with more jobs, more to do and a better town for us all to live. Gainsborough’s Independent Retailers feel so strongly about their products and services that they have to offer, that a new campaign to highlight their important role has been wholeheartedly welcomed by both local businesses and residents! Indeed, the role that independent shops and business play in our local towns cannot be overlooked, as 12 Gainsborough

│ Nov 2012

they make up the majority of what our local retail sector has to offer. Independent businesses are not only important to our local economy, they are so crucial in ensuring that we have diversity within our town centres! Moreover, as independent retail outlets are run by people whose business it is, they care so much about your experience, that they are often able to offer service above and beyond what many larger corporate chains can. The town is encouraging all local shoppers to spend their hard-earned cash locally instead of travelling further afield, or with well-known corporate chains. Michael Weedon is the deputy chief executive at the British Independent Retailers Association said, “The challenges to town centre retailing are many and pressing," he said earlier this year. “We are concentrating on the hard and very real disadvantages that independents face — such as parking, rates and planning. “But we know that helping shoppers

recognise the enduring virtues of independents, which make up two in every three shops nationally, will bring them back to our towns — the original shopping centres.” To encourage consumers to shop locally with their favourite independent shops, Gainsborough Independent Retailers — a collective of independent business owners — have come together to offer an incentive to everyone who decides to spend their hard-earned cash with one of them. From this month, any local shopper who spends £25 or more in one independent shop will be able to claim back any car-parking outlay from a Gainsborough car park from that day, from that individual retailer! This means that if you’re shopping in the Gainsborough Town Centre, no-one has to be put-off by car-parking charges. We know that if the local shoppers get behind this campaign, it will really make a difference to their purse strings and also the local businesses who have made the offer to make the incentive for local people!

A good read LEISURE

Kath Bennet takes a look at the best books this month One Million Tiny Plays About Britain Craig Taylor

How often do you hear someone complain that they never have time to read? Too often? Or are you guilty of this yourself? If so, Craig Taylor’s superb book is a godsend. The title is more or less an accurate description of the contents — although there are slightly fewer than a million of Taylor’s carefully crafted snapshots of British life: ‘dramatic haikus’, perhaps, as Richard Eyre

on his mobile phone from a tractor, to a late night on Newcastle Quayside. The characters are diverse too — young and old, drunk and sober, flippant and serious. However, it is the perfectly observed sharpness of speech that makes this book stand out. At first, you could believe that Taylor has merely been in the right place at the right time and recorded everything that he heard. Lines like ‘I once took Diana Rigg’s coat — in her pocket was a packet of Polos. That’s an elegant mint’ ! And ‘There’s more to it all. More than Swansea,’ sound so authentic that you believe in the speakers and their lives, however brief and insignificant their conversations seem to be. Some of the plays rely on a growing sense of unease — the nervous customer in the barber’s shop: others are out and out funny - two Wonder Women fighting in the street. Every ending is well judged and either rounds off the play with a ‘reveal’ or a cliff-hanger — always showing, never telling. Ideal for reading in short bursts or longer chunks — well worth a look.

his friends comes from the Disney cartoon version, then you are in for a treat. While the characters are the same and the stories recognisable, Milne’s telling has so much more depth. At times, it is laugh out loud funny — Rabbit in particular makes me giggle every time he replies to a knock at the door — and children will quickly read along with you, even if some of the sentence structure and vocabulary is complex.

Winne-the-Pooh AA Milne suggests in his introduction. The format of each play is the same: a brief sentence to set the scene, then the dialogue takes over. The longest runs to three or four pages, the shortest to one sentence. A range of scenes is covered — from two women in a queue at a Surrey bank, to a farmer in Kent speaking 14 Gainsborough

Every child deserves to have this book read aloud to them at least once before they are six and I bet you anything you will be asked for it again, and again. The word classic is sometimes used lightly: here, it is truly deserved.

cars — this Japanese saloon will meet most of your motoring needs. Within the last decade the Honda Accord has blossomed. It has turned from a bland, albeit dependable, car into a handsome, solid beast with real road presence. It looks business-like, it’s a proven, economical, motorway mile-muncher and it’s a very safe, tough family motor too. The latest Accord saloon, especially in GT guise, as tested here, is a car you’ll be proud to have as your company car. It is the perfect BMW or Audi alternative and projects a successful but unpretentious image. Behind the wheel, the Honda has well damped switchgear and an incredibly comfortable driving position. The seats are very supportive and the half-leather upholstery is sporty, yet elegant. The easyto-operate central sat-nav unit is a boon for business trips into the unknown, and the thick leather rimmed steering wheel is a pleasure to grasp on those expeditions. The drive is smooth, with lots of grunt from the 2.2L diesel engine. The car will accelerate from 0-62mph in an unruffled 9.4 seconds, but it will plough onwards and upwards to 131 mph. The four-door saloon takes corners well, soaks ups potholes, and generally feels well planted to the black stuff at all times. The 258 torques and 148 horses under 16 Gainsborough

Agreeable Accord Tim Barnes-Clay settles into Honda’s offering, squarely aimed at BMW and Audi the lid make the Accord a very capable towing tool too. It has a maximum braked towing weight of 1,700kg, so you’ll be able to haul a decent-sized caravan away for your weekend getaways or, if you’re into the equine world, you’ll be in the right vehicle to tow a light horse trailer. It’s not quite as engaging to drive as a rear-wheel drive BMW and it doesn’t have the flashy ‘string-of-pearl’ lights first introduced by Audi, but it’s a Honda — a firm with a long-standing reputation for good reliability. Of course, German brands have this status as well, but according to the highly regarded JD Power and Associates survey, the 2011 Accord was the highest ranked mid-size car in initial quality. So, if you like refinement, dependability, good looks and high levels of safety then get your place of work to add the Honda Accord to its list of company car choices. Either that, or head to your local Honda dealership. You won’t be disappointed.

Remembrance Day and the Two Minute Silence have been observed since the end of the First World War, but their relevance remains undiminished. When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars. But we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, Remembrance and the Two Minute tribute are as important as ever. Remembrance transcends all boundaries and The Royal British Legion seeks a small yet important individual and collective act, a rare moment when the nation can stand together and reflect on the price of freedom. The price is still being paid and more than 16,000 British Servicemen and women have been killed on duty since 1948.

Touring Theatre Co’s latest show The Touring Theatre Company

will land in Glentworth, Gainsborough on Friday 30th November at 7.30pm, at Glentworth Village Hall. They will present The Lighthouse on Shivering Sands, a tale of suspense and horror from Yorkshire’s most prolific crime writer. It is the starting point for the North Country Theatre Company’s latest theatrical adventure. The evening promises to be enthralling entertainment for a dark autumnal night. Tickets are £8 each for adults, concessions are £7 and under 16s just £5. For further information, please call 01427 667118 or 01427 667047.

Small troughs are placed at Gainsborough’s War Memorial to act as a Garden of Remembrance and everyone is invited to lay their own symbol of remembrance in them at any time before the 11th November. At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month! The Two Minute Silence is observed on Armistice Day, the day that marks the end of the First World War and which this year coincides with Remembrance Sunday. The Legion asks everyone to stop whatever they are doing and to stand silent for two minutes at 11.00 am on Sunday, 11th November, the 94th anniversary of the ending of the First World War, and have a “pause to remember”. Gainsborough’s main annual tribute to those who have died or suffered for their country in war will take place on Remembrance Sunday, the 11th November and will be led by Civic dignitaries and The Royal British Legion. The Civic Service will be held at The Parish Church of All

Saints, Church Street, Gainsborough commencing at 10.50am. When the Church service has been completed, the Royal British Legion Standard and the Clergy will lead a procession, including the congregation and civic dignitaries, to the War Memorial where there will be a short act of Remembrance including a further Two Minute Silence, and the laying of wreaths. Any organisation or individual will be given the opportunity to lay a wreath or other symbol of remembrance. In the afternoon of the 11th November there will be a parade at Sturton-by-Stow. Assembling in School Lane at 2.50pm, the Parish Council, The Royal British Legion and other ex-service organisations together with several local organisations will parade to the War Memorial for an outdoor Service of Remembrance and laying of wreaths. Everyone is invited to attend these events. For further information, please call 01427 616852 or 07766 744035.

Is the housing market set for take-off?

Craig Brown ponders whether the housing market is due a rise

The latest house price

figures for August show a 1.4% rise over the past year. In real terms that’s actually a 2% drop but it sums up the housing market over the last three years — broadly flat. But could there be some light at the end of the tunnel? Anyone who’s sold their house recently and taken an offer well below the asking price would probably disagree,

but I see some hopeful signs. Mortgage availability figures have jumped strongly in the last month while the typical deposit demanded by lenders is slipping slowly down towards the 10% mark. Even better news comes in the form of the Funding for Lending scheme. This allows banks and building societies to borrow 5% of their loan book from the Bank of England to fund new lending. The initial evidence suggests that most of this new lending has been in the way of mortgages.

More good news comes in the form of forecasts for economic growth. Most economists are united in their belief that the economy will return to growth in the third quarter of this year, which should give a welcome boost to optimism among the house-buying public. Most estate agents I speak to are already confident; once again they are looking at investing in their businesses instead of cutting overheads. The biggest thing, though, is the sheer level of under supply. In the past five years it is estimated that, as a country, we should have been building between 200,000 and 300,000 new houses per year. In reality we have been building between 100,000 and 140,000. This situation shows no signs of improving in the immediate future. That means that there is a lot of pent up demand already in the system and the situation is only going to get worse year on year as we continue to build less houses than we need to. All this adds up to one thing, rising house prices; maybe not tomorrow or next month, but certainly next year.

It’s enough to make you

growl — you apply for a credit card or loan, get accepted but they inform you the rate’s far higher than advertised. Worse still, the application hits your credit score, making other cheap credit harder to obtain. This is the vicious circle of credit application, yet a few new techniques may help you square it. Here are my must-knows. ONLY 51% MUST GET THE ADVERTISED RATE Almost every card and loan’s now ‘representative APR’, meaning only 51% of accepted applicants must get the advertised rate. The rest get costlier deals. How do you find out? By applying, but each one hits your credit score. NO-FINGERPRINTS ‘CAN I GET CREDIT?’ TESTS A few lenders have launched ‘soft’ searches that indicate likely acceptance without marking your file. I applaud this — more lenders should follow suit. COMPARE CARDS AND FIND WHICH WILL ACCEPT YOU I’m not a fan of credit card comparisons as it’s just as much about how you use cards as the rate. Yet Money Supermarket’s Smartsearch can predict likely acceptance from the 30 providers it compares — and it does this without any fingerprints on your credit file. Though do be very careful to ensure you know exactly what you’re doing and the best way to work a card once you get it. WHAT LENDERS REALLY KNOW ABOUT YOU There are lots of myths about what information credit files actually contain. What’s on your credit file: Your addresses, County Court Judgement and Bankruptcy record, six years’ credit history of credit applications and loose repayment history, and some utility history.

22 Gainsborough

│ Nov 2012

What’s not on it? Criminal records, parking or speeding fines, your race/ religion, savings, salary, CSA info, student loans, credit rejections, PPI or bank charge reclaims. EARN £100 CASHBACK AND (RE) BUILD YOUR CREDIT SCORE A key to (re)building credit worthiness is proving you can behave well, by getting a credit card and never missing a repayment. Of course, the difficulty is getting the card. The Aqua Reward is aimed at poor credit scorers, even some with CCJs/ defaults over a year old pass its credit score. Applications will go on your file, but, uniquely, it pays a big 3% cashback on all spending up to a maximum of £100 a year. However, it’s a horrid 34.9% representative APR, so do your normal spending on it, which will help build your file. But ALWAYS fully repay each month to avoid interest and never withdraw cash — so there’s only gain, no cost to you.

Martin Lewis

Credit rates

CHECKING YOUR CREDIT FILES DOESN’T GO ON YOUR CREDIT FILE It’s important to regularly check to spot any errors. When you do, you’ll often see how many times you’ve checked in the past. Many worry this hurts them, but only you see this information, lenders don’t. There are three credit agencies: Equifax, Experian and CallCredit. You can check them all online for £2 each — for what to check and a loophole to get them free, see www.moneysavingexpert. com/creditrating. DON’T WORRY, INSURANCE COMPARISONS ARE NO FINGERPRINTS Many people worry that when they’re using comparison site to find cheap insurance deals these involve getting quotes for credit (if you want to pay monthly). Yet credit reference agency Experian confirms comparisons only use soft searches, so while they may appear on your file, lenders won’t see them.

HEALTH

As of 1st November, there is only around eight weeks till Christmas! That’s right folks, you heard it here first. The mornings are getting darker, the nights are drawing in and for most people this means hibernating. But, if you plan for your winter storage, your waistline won’t regret it in the new year.

SETTING GOALS You can make a big difference in eight weeks. Not only could you lose a significant amount of weight (great for those upcoming Christmas parties!) but you could also make a life changing difference to your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk of diabetes to name a few. On our Body Composition Programme, we educate our clients about nutrition so that they can maintain their great results month after month, year after year. So, when it comes round to the festive season, they know exactly what to eat, meaning they can still enjoy themselves but without the weight gain aftermath. WINTER FOOD Many people complain of gaining weight over the winter months due to the change in food they consume. Well, you’ll be pleased to hear that you can still tuck into those nice, warm, home-cooked meals without gaining weight, and not only that, you 24 Gainsborough

Preparing for ‘hibernation’ could even lose some of the belly! Broths and stews are a fantastic way of increasing your vegetable intake and making sure you are consuming enough of those all important omega3s which help switch off the fat storing genes. If the stews mainly contain vegetables, these can be served with a portion of meat or fish or if you feel that you really must have some form of complex carbohydrate, opt for something like quinoa or wild rice. MOTIVATION Enthusiasm is always a difficult feeling to muster when both the mornings and nights are cold and dark. It always takes more effort getting motivated to perform any task (except lying in bed) but fear not, you do not need to be outside battling the elements in the simple aid of trying to burn a few extra pounds.

Chris Barnacoat on how to keep up your fitness as the nights draw in We all know that exercise has many health benefits, one of which, when it is part of your weekly routine, is accelerating your weight loss. Performing the correct exercises means you become more time efficient and continue to burn fat even while at rest. So, find anything which will motivate you. Buy a dress the next size down, find a picture of your role model, set a date in the diary or make a bet with a friend. There are many different methods helping you to stay on track, chose one (or more) which keeps you focused and you will be laughing all the way to the buffet table at the office party! Follow the Journey at Lincoln Castle Tickets are now on sale for one

of Lincoln’s most beautiful events — The Journey, at Lincoln Castle, from Friday 14th to Monday 17th December at 6.00pm and 8.00pm. Recreating the nativity in the grounds of Lincoln Castle, this outdoor promenade performance is not simply a theatrical event. Guided by a narrator, audiences travel around the grounds of Lincoln’s historic castle and experience Mary and Joseph’s journey — a journey brought alive with music, spectacle and beauty. Organiser Ali Cormack said, “The combination of the simple but loved events of the first Christmas, supported by the most enchanting of musical scores and a unique and gorgeous setting, makes The Journey, the perfect

start to everyone’s Christmas.” All those involved volunteer their time and help freely, with all profits going to the Lincolnshire Kidney Patients Association. Front of House volunteer Richard Main said, “It’s a privilege to help raise much needed funds for this superb cause. The Journey marks the start of Christmas and I have seen so many people who have been genuinely moved as they pass through the castle on a beautiful winter’s night.” With just eight performances, limited tickets are now available exclusively from Goodies Sweet Shop, 5 The Strait, Lincoln, or by calling direct on 01522 525307. Tickets cost just £6 for adults, and concessions and children are just £4. Gates open 15 minutes before the start of each performance.

How to host the perfect bonfi re party Debbie Singh-Bhatti on how to get the best ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’

For many years my parents hosted an annual bonfire party that attracted friends from far and wide. The planning and organisation were minimal, and in many ways that was its appeal. It afforded us all the opportunity to meet together informally to enjoy the most basic, simple things in life — food, warmth and companionship. For me, the perfect bonfire party is based around the Three Fs — flame, food and fireworks. Let’s start with the bonfire. The way you build a fire affects how long it will last and the amount of heat it gives off. It’s best to arrange kindling (such twigs, cardboard and small pieces of wood) in a teepee shape over a base of tinder (such as paper, wood shavings or fire lighters) and then add more bulky pieces of wood and logs which ignite 28 Gainsborough

│ Nov 2012

more slowly but burn longer. Light the fire about 20–30 minutes before the party is due to start so that it is burning brightly when your guests arrive. Don’t forget to include a Guy Fawkes. Why not hold a Guy Fawkes competition with prizes for the best or the funniest. No party is complete without food. November weather is traditionally cold and damp, so warm everyone up with a mug of home-made soup. We always encourage our guests to contribute to the food table. This usually results in a large and varied selection of goodies, ranging from delicious hot dogs with fried onions (is there anything on earth that can beat that smell?) to trays of parkin, treacle toffee and toffee apples — wonderful, traditional, British grub! Fireworks are a must of course. As fireworks cost a small fortune don’t be shy about asking your guests to bring along a box. Even with a substantial financial outlay, your display is unlikely to be hugely impressive, but half

the fun is the anticipation anyway and it’s amazing just how much enjoyment can be gleaned from the most humble box of bangers. Sparklers are a must, especially if you have young children attending, so be sure to have a good supply at hand, matches to light them with and a bucket of water to extinguish them. Always remember the firework code and stay safe at all times. Other tips we have learned from (sometimes bitter) personal experience is to make sure that carpets are protected if people are going to be in and out of the house, especially if the ground outside is wet, and have a supply of torches on hand if your bonfire is located some distance from the back door. For me, the key to hosting a successful bonfire party is to set everything up then stay relaxed and let it run itself. Then you should have a roaring good time!

The hat is hot! Sarah Hughes on which hats are top this autumn/winter

Want to stand out from the crowd? The hat is not just for practicality this autumn! It’s a hot fashion accessory which will do more than protect your head from the elements. The right hat is the icing on the cake for your look this season. What type of hat will you be wearing? Add a touch of luxury to your outfit with a (preferably fake) fur hat — there’s a fabulous range of styles in the shops this year! Go for a huge mounted hat to really make a statement or choose a more elegant Russian style. The brighter and more outrageous the better! Perfect teamed with jeans, velvet or leather. Or how about a fedora? They go with any outfit and suit everyone. For a gorgeous, sophisticated, ultrafeminine look, a twenties inspired cloche hat really hits the spot! Perfect with a smart party dress and a pair of classic high heeled boots. You’ll be the belle of the ball! Some of the autumn/winter fashions will be less easy to wear. Cowboy hat anyone? Team it with a cropped jacket, leather gloves and ankle boots and you could be onto a winner — though definitely not a look for the office. Top hats are also big news; again, I don’t think I’ll be wearing one but will you dare? Make it the star of the show by dressing down and you could pull it off! The clever fashionistas may choose a gaucho hat as a sassy, more wearable alternative — feminine, stylish and it works brilliantly with jeans, a strapless cocktail dress or anything in between. How will you wear your hat? Huge or tiny, plain or printed, velvet, fur or feathered, chic or attention grabbing splendour? Be bold and hold your head high this season — you look hot in that hat! 30 Gainsborough

TECHNOLOGY

When James Cameron’s

Avatar burst into cinemas in 2009, the world woke up to the potential for three-dimensional films to astound, amaze and capture our imaginations. The ground-breaking movie started a trend for spectacular effects in cinematography, and many new films are now shown in 3D, as well as major sporting events including London 2012. There’s no doubt that watching 3D films at the cinema can be thrilling, but is it worth trying to recreate the experience at home? You might be surprised to learn that the cost can be only slightly more than a regular set-up. You will need to get a 3D-compatible TV, 3D glasses and access to 3D programmes or films. There are two types of 3D technology. Passive 3D is the type used in cinemas. To watch, you wear cheap lightweight glasses that allow your eyes to see differently polarised light. Your brain combines what each eye sees to create the 3D image. You can also get passive 3D glasses that clip onto normal specs. Active 3D gives you a higher resolution picture, but the glasses are

32 Gainsborough

│ Nov 2012

The next dimension

3D effects are taking the cinema world by storm, but is 3D TV worth investing in? bulkier to wear. While passive 3D TVs generally come with several pairs of glasses, you may have to buy active ones separately, at around £30 a pair. They work by synchronising with the TV and playing back rapidly blinking images to your eyes— for this reason, manufacturers warn that they are unsuitable for people with a history of epilepsy or strokes. 3D televisions can cost

Alex Brown on breaking through the fourth wall anything from under £500 to several thousands. Larger screens will give you a better experience. With smaller sets, you may need to sit closer to the screen to get the full effect. All 3D TVs can display 2D pictures as well — you simply switch off the 3D function and they become a normal high-definition TV. Once you have your equipment, you can decide what you are going to watch. For films, you get the best picture quality with Blu-ray. You will need to invest in a Blu-ray player and films on Blu-ray disk. You can also play Blu-rays (and 3D games) on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. You can watch other programmes on Sky’s own 3D channel, which comes with its more expensive monthly packages. With Virgin Media and BT Vision, you can watch 3D films on demand. The BBC occasionally shows sporting events in 3D on its HD channel. Currently, 3D television is definitely an optional extra, but if growth continues at its present rate, it might not be that long before everything we watch is three-dimensional.

Village Players Buffalo Gals Cabaret Evening Saturday 10th November is

the date for another of the popular Cabaret evenings that are hosted by the Village Players (Everton). With the aid of a subsidy from Notts Village Ventures, the Players are again able to present a top professional act. This time it’s The Buffalo Gals, who are fast becoming the country's favourite old-time country string band. Firmly rooted in traditional American music, with an authentic sound driven by fiddle, banjo, percussive step dance, and soaring harmonies, their music is packed with all the excitement, passion and fun of Appalachian, Bluegrass, Blues and Cajun tunes and songs. The event will take place in Everton Village Hall, which will be transformed into an intimate performance venue, with professional staging and lighting and cabaret seating for diners, who will all enjoy a hot meal before the performance and a home-made sweet course in the interval (special dietary requirements can be catered for). A licensed bar will be available, selling quality wines, beers and soft drinks. Tickets are priced at £15, which include the meal, and are available from the Players Box Office by calling 01777 817275, or can be obtained via their website www.evplayers.org.uk The Players’ last two cabaret evenings sold out, so customers are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

Gainsborough Rotary Club In May of this year Gainsborough Rotary Club members welcomed representatives of the Gainsborough Furniture and Resource Centre to one of their meetings. Director Mark Picksley was accompanied by two of the trustees, Lucy Picksley and David Hawkins. The club had donated £500 to the organisation in recognition of the valuable service provided by the Centre. The initiative was first launched by West Lindsey District Council in 2006 and then passed to Acis in 2011. However, Acis decided that the scheme was not a viable one and it was at this stage that a Board of Trustees was established, with a Director at the helm. The scheme provides good quality affordable furniture and effects, donated by the public, to those in need, which, in turn, creates a cleaner environment and diverts waste from landfill. The Board collects and re-distributes unwanted furniture and more, to enable those

on state benefits or lower incomes to have a more comfortable home — in the very least, to enable them to have the essential items of furniture. The scheme also provides employment to those involved in its restoration. Since the scheme was started, an apprentice has been appointed to cope with the workload. The small charges made for the refurbished items means that a trading profit can be made to cover the cost of premises, transport, labour, materials etc, thus ensuring long-term sustainability. Like all successful operations demand often exceeds supply. The turnover has increased substantially and items are at a premium. Anyone wishing to dispose of unwanted furniture, which can be collected, or to offer help of any kind — including their labour — are asked to contact the office, telephone number 01427 238948 or please email mspicksleygfrc@gmail.com.

The Old Nick Theatre One of the next productions

from Old Nick Theatre is Trivial Pursuit. This will run from the 26th November to the 1st December A summer of fun, as friends from a local operatic society gather to discuss their new stage performance, a BBQ with disaster mixed which the plot of the latest production. Every member wants the lead role and as the night draws on the director ends up promising so much

that everyone is left wondering. There’s everything a great production needs with drama coming from the excess alcohol, flirtation and even suicide, with a twist at the end which no-one suspects. This comedy promises to keep you laughing right up to the curtain call. Tickets can be obtained from the Box Office on 01427 810616, and cost £8.00 for adults and £7.50 for concessions.

£1,000 raised for Lindsey Lodge Scooter and district group committee are delighted to announce that the Indian evening that took place on Friday 21st September, was grand success. The evening rose over £1,000 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice in Scunthorpe. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the above cause. Our thanks especially go to Mrs Dharshini Casie Chetty, for organising

the fashion show and all the beautiful and handsome models who took part. Alison Lacey also made a huge contribution, with her delicious three course Indian meal, along with her wonderful staff who volunteered. Dans Satam provided fantastic belly dancing entertainment for us, which was a wonderful treat. We are also grateful to the people and businesses who donated all the generous raffle prizes.

PETS

Remember the 5th November June Turner BVMS, MRCVS Pinfold House Veterinary Clinic

Fireworks are pretty to look

at but for many pets and their owners November 5th is a miserable time. I don’t know if I’m just getting old and boring but it seems that the bangs and crackles are louder than ever before! If you suspect that your dog or cat is afraid of fireworks-signs such as panting, restlessness, trembling, digging in corners and trying to hide are common at

least in dogs — it is important to provide a “bolt hole” where your pet can feel safe and never punish your pet for any destructive behaviour resulting from anxiety. It is helpful if you can remain relaxed so as not to reinforce any anxiety symptoms in your pet — not easy I know when your dog is trying to dig a giant hole in your favourite armchair! If simply reassuring your pet is not enough there are many products available which

may help reduce anxiety levels. Plug-in pheromone devices are a drug-free way of helping your pet feel safe and secure but need to be in use for one week before the dreaded fireworks start. Also, some natural protein products and herbal remedies are available in capsule/liquid form and some claim to be effective after as short a time as 90 minutes. A last resort would be drug therapy in the form of tranquillisers — for pets that suffer severe symptoms these can be very beneficial and your vet will be able to assess your pet and prescribe the appropriate medication. Whatever level of help your pet needs I would urge you to seek advice in the early stages because anxiety signs will worsen with each fearful episode that your pet experiences. So maybe using a harmless natural remedy this year will prevent the need for stronger prescription tranquillisers later in life.

I am writing this the day after the final of the “Great British Bake Off “ which has to be the best programme ever, I have been glued to it for the past 10 weeks, I was a little upset though that Brendan did not win, he was my favourite by far. Should I enter next year?! Back to this month’s recipe, with Christmas just around the corner — yes that’s right Christmas — I thought

METHOD • Add all the fruits to a bowl and pour over a generous amount of brandy (or orange juice) to soak in and macerate • Cover and leave overnight • Take the butter out of the fridge to warm to room temperature • Pre-heat the oven to 150°c • Grease and line a cake tin with baking parchment, approximately 23cm diameter • In a large bowl, sieve the flour and mixed spice then add the almonds • In another bowl, beat the eggs with the milk • Cube the butter and cream together with the sugar, slowly blend the creamed butter 38 Gainsborough

with the flour, then gently mix in the egg mixture • Add the macerated fruit (drain this first, reserving the liquid for later) • Mix until the fruit is evenly distributed, being careful not to overwork it • Pour the mixture into the cake tin and cover with baking parchment to protect the top • Bake in the oven for 3.5 to 4 hours • Once cooked, allow to cool then turn out onto a wire rack

• Pour over a little of the reserved liquid to soak in while still warm • Once fully cool, wrap in greaseproof paper and tinfoil and store in an airtight container • Regularly ‘feed’ the cake with brandy or orange juice, once a week or so ARATI EP

LEGAL EAGLE Dean Dunham

Have the banks been mis-selling to us again? Have the banks and building societies now mis-sold another financial package in the form of ‘packaged bank accounts’? A packaged bank account is generally a current account that has a range of benefits included such as: • Insurance policies • Music downloads • Airport lounge access • Commission free foreign currency • Various discounts However, such added benefits are not ‘freebies’ as those with a packaged account pay a monthly fee for the benefit, typically between £20–£40 per month. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has said that around one in five adults have a packaged account, which therefore puts the number of these accounts into the millions. NEW RULES The sale of packaged accounts by banks and building societies has been a source of concern for the regulator for some time. It wants to ensure they do not become the latest case of widespread mis-selling, following the payment protection insurance (PPI) and overdraft charges sagas. As such a new set of rules are being introduced at end of 40 Gainsborough

│ Nov 2012

March 2013, under which banks and building societies will be required to: Check on whether customers would be eligible to claim under the bundled insurance policies Send customers eligibility statements to check whether these policies met their needs Make sure sales advisers alert customers to insurance cover that may not be suitable for them DOES THIS MEAN THAT PACKAGED BANK ACCOUNTS HAVE BEEN MIS-SOLD? On many occasions the answer will simply be yes. The banks and building societies have therefore clearly failed to sell these packaged bank accounts on a ‘case by case’ basis but instead have sold them on assuming that ‘one size fits all’ (i.e.: each benefit will be applicable to all customers). As we have learned from the payment protection insurance debacle this simply is not the case. It is therefore inevitable that many customers who have a packaged bank account will not be eligible for some of the benefits that it provides. The other question that has to be asked is whether packaged bank account holders are getting the best value for money. Which have claimed that they have researched this point and have

Get more tips from Dean at www.youandyourrights.com

found that on many occasions it is actually cheaper to shop around for the benefits and not pay for the pleasure of having a packaged bank account. If the banks and building societies have not explained this to customers (and let’s face it they have not) they have mis-sold. WHAT SHOULD CUSTOMERS DO NOW? Anyone who has a packaged bank account should check how much they are paying for this and exactly what they are getting. In doing this they should satisfy themselves that; they are actually eligible for the benefits offered with the account (for example if insurance is included they may not be eligible if they are self-employed or over a certain age) and that they could not buy the benefit cheaper elsewhere. If the conclusion is that they are not eligible for something or indeed if they could buy it cheaper from another source then in these circumstances the customer has been mis-sold the bank account and they should complain immediately. Some banks have also automatically transferred customers to a packaged bank account. This is not allowed and anyone in this situation should complain immediately. This is undoubtedly the start of the next PPI saga which is going to cost the banks and building societies dearly! Frankly, they only have themselves to blame.

Gainsborough Choral Society Gainsborough Choral Society will be performing Mozart's enigmatic Requiem Mass on Saturday 17th November in the perfect setting of the Parish church of All Saints Gainsborough. They shall also sing Mozart's Laudate Dominum, and Purcell's Rejoice in the Lord. Joined by the Lincoln Pro Musica Orchestra, the conductor is Richard Green. The Requiem Mass is surrounded by controversy as Mozart died before its completion. The piece had been commissioned by an eccentric Count and Mozart had received part payment in advance for the work. However on Mozart's death, his wife was anxious to receive

the balance due and approached another composer to complete the work before she presented the Count with the finished composition. She needed to support herself and her two children. Musicologists have puzzled over the authorship of sections of the Mass since Mozart's death in 1791. Despite the uncertainty this is a magnificent piece of choral music. The concert starts at 7.30pm with tickets costing £10 for adults, £8 concessions and 50p for an accompanied child under 14 years old. Tickets may be purchased up to one month in advance from Horsleys, 27 Church Street, Gainsborough. Please call 01427 613014 for further details.

Gainsborough Organ Society At the Gainsborough Organ

Society we have 2 great events coming up in the next couple of months! On Sunday 18th November, we have International Dutch star performer Dirkjan Ranzijn playing for us on his European Tour. He has made three previous appearances for us, playing to a full house each time. He will be performing on the very latest state of the art German BOHM organ. The performance starts at 2.30pm with doors opening at 1.00pm. Tickets can be obtained from Peter Naulls

at £5.50 each, by calling 01427 615265. It will be a music event to suit all tastes guaranteed and everyone will be made most welcome. There’s also our famous Christmas Concert on Sunday 16th December, starting at 2.30pm with star organist Robert Wolfe. Tickets are a reasonable £6 each; again from Peter on the above number, and as always, this will be a very special event. The committee and our friends even dress up with costumes to truly get in to the Christmas spirit.

Beckingham Christmas Market Beckingham and Saundby

Village Hall committee is now busy organising its seventh Christmas Market in the village hall, Beckingham, on Sunday 2nd December from 10.00am to 3.00pm. This has become an increasingly popular annual event. There will be at least a dozen craft stalls selling a diverse range of goods including; jewellery, Christmas gifts and cards, knitting, embroidery, paper crafts, woodwork, china

and other great gift items. The fundraising stalls will include an impressive tombola and bottle stall, along with guessing games, and a cake stall. Children can anticipate seeing Father Christmas, and hot refreshments will be served. The day ends with the Grand Prize Draw which has at least 20 prizes — the main ones being £50 cash, a Christmas Hamper and a Retford Majestic Theatre voucher. All proceeds raised are to go towards village hall funds.

Feeling fruity If you are anything like me you will

Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act.

Jobs for this month • Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts • Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the spring • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting 44 Gainsborough

Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a two year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds. Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get instruction on how to plant and

Leanne Lodge on the rewards of playing the long game with fruit care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks — this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from spring onwards — very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.

Delicious Dishes

Richard Stevenson shares his favourite savoury dishes THIS MONTH Horseradish and cheesestuffed open burgers with basil passata sauce

“Ooh… aah…” that’s right, it’s almost bonfire night. Now, we all love a good bonfire and fireworks display, and you might be heading off to a local event, or you might be doing your own in the back garden with the family. You can guarantee there’ll be a few duds in the box — if you get them from the same place my dad used

to — and a few that veer alarmingly off into next door’s garden. So while you’re amusing yourself with watching your well-meaning host’s Olympic closing ceremony-rivalling display, why not whip up these open burgers to warm you through? Give them a go, and tell us what you think.

leave a gap between the cheese in the middle and the edge • Press together, to combine the edges so they seal nicely • Place in an oven-proof dish and pour in half the passata • Meanwhile in the frying pan, pour in the remaining passata and basil and bring to the boil, then season • Pour this over the burgers and bake in the oven, uncovered for 30 minutes • While this is cooking, halve

the crusty rolls and toast until just crisp • Cut the garlic clove in half and rub into the bread and drizzle on a little olive • Top the bread with a burger and serve with a few green salad leaves

INGREDIENTS • 1tbsp olive oil • 1 large onion, peeled, diced • 500g minced beef • 3 tbsp chopped basil • 500g passata • Strong white cheese, such as mature cheddar, grated • 1tbsp horseradish • 2 large crusty rolls • 1 clove garlic, peeled

METHOD • Preheat the oven to 180°c • Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook out the onion for 5 minutes or so over a medium heat until softened but not browned • In a large bowl, add the mince, 1tbsp of the chopped basil and the horseradish • When the onion has cooled, tip into the bowl and season well • Mix together with your hands, combining well • Form the mixture into eight thin patties • Top four of the patties with the grated cheese, then top with the other patties, to form a sandwich — being careful to

As winter approaches, wildlife

body-clocks are already preparing for the lower temperatures and scarcity of food. Surprisingly, there are only three mammals that actually hibernate in the UK; the hedgehog, bat and dormouse. All other mammals fatten up or store food and some just prepare to slow down and sleep a lot. Just like us, when it’s cold outside, wildlife want somewhere warm and safe to curl up and some comfort food to keep them happy. So what can we do to help wildlife survive? GARDENS, YARDS, TUBS, WINDOW BOXES Good news — leave them well alone! Leave fading blooms and seed heads just where they are over the winter — fallen leaves make great mulch so scatter them on your garden — if you feel you must tidy up something, then make a ‘brush pile’ of old branches, twigs, stalks and leaves in a quiet part of the yard or garden. Dried, dead and decaying vegetation provide food and shelter for a whole range of insects that then becomes food for small mammals and birds. PONDS, WATER FEATURES AND BIRD BATHS Spend the time you’ve saved by not tidying the garden to keeping these valuable sources of water ice-free

Worms, winter and wildlife instead. The further wildlife has to fly and roam to find running water, the more energy they use and the more food they need. Water is crucial for their survival so every drop counts. WORMS Now is a good time to think about the worms in your wormery. Some people relocate their wormeries into a shed or garage — if this isn’t an option, don’t worry. Worms will slow down over winter, but they won’t starve;

Indoor meetings for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Society are held at Morton Village Hall (just north of Gainsborough), and begin at 7.30pm. A minimum donation of £1to attend each meeting includes refreshments, and there is usually a raffle. Bird food is available if preordered by calling 01427 613128, along with and other items for fundraising. People of all ages, whether Wildlife Trust members or not, are most welcome.

they will simply recycle the compost waste they have already made. Fill the air gap on top of the waste organic matter with fallen deciduous leaves and make sure the lid fits properly so rain doesn’t enter and then freeze. Use crumpled newspaper if you don’t have any leaves. It is quite normal for some worms to die over winter if they are outside, but they will have laid eggs which will hatch as soon as the weather warms up again, replenishing your worm population.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 21st November, with guest Geoff Trinder who will speak to us about ‘A Digital Year’. He will take us on a journey ‘From the garden to Japan and from orchids to owls’. Why not come along and see what one of our favourite speakers and photographers has been up to recently? Men are generally more

indifferent towards their health than women; they are more reluctant to openly discuss their personal health issues and less likely to see their GP. Movember's campaign objective is to raise awareness of men's health issues, specifically cancers affecting men. Prostate and testicular cancers are highly curable if caught in the early stages. Movember aims to increase early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment, as this will ultimately reduce the number of deaths from cancer. The Movember campaign puts a fun twist on the serious issue of men’s health by encouraging men to grow a moustache during November. “Mo Bros” register at www.movember. com and then must begin on the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face. There is to be no joining of the mo to the sideburns (that’s considered a beard), there’s to be no joining of the handlebars to the chin (that’s considered a goatee) and each “Mo Bro” must conduct

Grow your own this Movember himself like a true gentleman! The average life expectancy for men is four years less than women. More than one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK; over 40,000 men are diagnosed with it every year and there are 250,000 men currently living with the disease. One in nine men in the UK are likely to face prostate cancer in their lifetime. 2,209 men in the UK were diagnosed

with testicular cancer in 2009; 47% of testicular cancer cases occur in men under 35 years and over 90% occur in men under 55 years. 42% of men were classified as overweight in 2010 (in England); obese men are 5 times more likely to develop type-II diabetes and three times more likely to develop cancer of the colon.
