Welcome! Welcome to the August edition of Gainsborough Life magazine.
We’ve finally reached August and the school holidays have begun – the key focus of the month if you’ve got children in the family. We often look through rose-tinted glasses and see a time for some rest, recuperation and socialising with friends and family. Though, if you’re anything like me, I am already feeling the pressure of juggling work, parenting and socialising. If you are looking for things to do this month, then you’ll find lots of ideas in our Summer Days Out guide. Gainsborough Old Hall, Gainsborough Model Railway Society and the Connexions Community Hub all have activities planned during the school holidays. Amid, all the busy-ness, don’t forget to make some time for yourself — something I need to prioritise. Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy and we have

an article this month which will encourage us all to sit back and appreciate the here and now. We’ve also got some book recommendations which will inspire you to lose yourself in a good book. More active ideas inside the magazine may be baking or creating new planting opportunities in your garden. Let’s all vow to do something for ourselves this month… I’ll report back in the next edition. You might be interested in signing up to St Barnabas Hospice’s brand new event (pictured above). Mighty Mudder takes place in September. Don’t forget to visit our website, www.gainsboroughlife, over the summer as we’ll keep adding new events to our calendar and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for daily updates.

Make your home office work harder for you
BE COLOUR CONFIDENT Why not paint the room in a bold colour that makes you happy, or cover a feature wall (or the whole room) with patterned wallpaper? ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY? A comfortable chair is essential, and an adjustable office chair on castors is the best choice. You might want to re-cover and/or paint it, or just hang a length of fabric over the back and add an attractive cushion. SEE THE LIGHT Good lighting is vital to avoid eye strain. Natural light is ideal, but glare from direct sunshine is not — experiment with the desk’s position and consider a blind for shading. Fit overhead lighting that doesn’t cast shadows over your working area — track lighting, inset ceiling spots and wall lamps are all options. Desk lamps should, ideally, be adjustable.

less of a chore by designing a room that’s functional and attractive. SORT OUT YOUR STORAGE While a combination of shelving, files and boxes works well, why not seek out unique pieces to introduce a sense of character? Although chain stores and specialist shops sell office furniture at a range of prices, consider junk shops, second-hand furniture stores and salvage yards for interesting alternatives, such as old school lockers, distressed wall cupboards, huge wicker baskets or old factory trolleys. Some stored items will need to be within easy reach, while those used less frequently can be stored on high shelves or in deep cupboards,

or even in another room. If your office is an awkward shape, consider built-in storage to maximise space. THE BEST DESK Even in a small room, desk area will probably be more useful than floor space, so choose the biggest one possible. A desk with drawers or cubby holes is doubly practical, though minimalists may wish to consider a glass desk: perfect if you can generally keep it clear and tidy. With limited space, consider adding a small worktop to one side of your desk to create an ergonomic L-shaped workspace. ON THE WALLS Make the most of the height of your room with wall-mounted storage. Pin boards, peg board, magnetic boards and hanging racks are ideal, and wiring one or two adjustable lamps into the wall above your desk also saves worktop space.
DETAILS MATTER If necessary, ask an electrician to add plug sockets to minimise messy and inconvenient cabling. About three inches above the work surface is good, plus some lower down and out of sight. Sort the rest of the cables out with ties and clips and consider labelling plugs so you know which is which. DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET PERSONAL Add a pretty rug, a cushion, interesting desk accessories, a selection of plants, some colourful wall prints or a selection of framed photographs. Scent is important too — make the room fragrant with a vase of flowers, scented candle or reed diffuser, and this will be a room where you’ll enjoy spending time. Two charities that have benefitted local people will, in turn, benefit from the proceeds of a coffee morning held at the home of Ian and Melanie Keat on Saturday 22nd June. The charities to benefit are Motor Neurone Disease Association and Marie Curie, which provides care and support through terminal illness. The sum raised was £1,130, which will be divided equally between the two charities. Thank you to Ian and Melanie for hosting the coffee morning, which saw nearly 60 people come to enjoy their garden and homemade refreshments. Ian added: “We would like to thank everyone who supported the coffee morning. The atmosphere was great, and people seemed to enjoy themselves. We would like to also thank the people who gave up so much time to become Mel’s helpers, the Methodist Church for allowing the use of the car park, and Max and Fabian for expertly executing the raffle.”

The Friends of Gainsborough Cemeteries and Chapel The Friends of Gainsborough
Cemeteries and Chapel hope local people may be able to help them. Firstly, they are looking for information about WWI soldier, Private Joseph Herman Smith, who lived in Alexandra Cottages. He served in the Sherwood Foresters and was severely wounded in the jaw in 1917. He died following an operation in 1920. He is buried in an unmarked grave and the friends are hoping that it may be accepted as a war grave. Secondly, during WWI, several thousand soldiers from Yorkshire were billeted with Gainsborough families during their training here. After they went out to France in April 1915, the local paper published many of their letters describing life in the trenches and breaking news of injuries and deaths. The Gledhill family, from 4 Cromford Street, had four sergeants billeted with them and several of their letters were published in the paper, one of them said: “We often talk of the happy days we were lucky enough to spend with you.” Then in October, the Gledhill’s received a letter saying
that sergeant Dick Simon had been killed in action by a sniper. Another of the sergeants was killed in 1918. It is hoped to produce a book about these Yorkshire soldiers including their letters published in the newspaper. If any Gainsborough people know that during WWI their families had soldiers billeted with them, the friends will be delighted to hear from them. One of the West Yorkshire soldiers who was billeted here was Captain Maurice Lupton, killed in action in June 1915. He is related to the Duchess of Cambridge. Please contact Susan Edlington on 01427 612030, or Peter Bradshaw on 01427 610507.

Why doctors are prescribing Mindfulness Alison Runman looks at the trend of personal awareness Mindfulness has gone
from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about? Mindfulness is: • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment — both physical sensations and emotions. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling and what sparked these thoughts and emotions. HOW IT CAN HELP Today, many of us rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ and missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting. “It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier and begin to see patterns, recognising those that aren’t helpful. This can make it easier to prevent them overwhelming you or leading you into a spiral of negative emotions or actions that make the situation worse.
12 August 2019
We can all benefit from mindfulness, but it’s now officially recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to prevent depression in people who’ve had three or more bouts, and is increasingly recommended by doctors for helping with chronic conditions or pain, as well as stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging evidence that it can ease insomnia, too. PRACTISING MINDFULNESS The NHS recommends: • Noticing the everyday and trying something new — notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or
going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way. • Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings — “Mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams.“Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.” Identify them. “That’s my worry about my Dad’s health.” “I’m stressed because I’ve got a really busy week.” By being aware of your fears and concerns, you’re more likely to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the thing they’re about. • Freeing yourself from the past and future — realising that worries about the past or future can dominate, stopping you from enjoying the now. If you realise you’ve been reliving or pre-living negative experiences for several minutes, take a moment to focus yourself in the present, appreciating the day and the moment you’re living now. • Taking time out — ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, focusing on your breathing and your body and bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. This could be at home or while travelling. Find the time and place most convenient and helpful for you. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www.bemindfulonline. com, or you can find a local teacher at www.bemindful. co.uk/learn-mindfulness.

They haul famous trains such as the ‘Yorkshire Pullman’ and the ‘West Riding Ltd’. It takes 10 operators to run the railway which is run to a timetable with bell codes and signals, just like the real railway in the days of steam. The model railway has been built

Botanical beauty Whether you prefer
small succulents or a giant monstera, use plants and foliage to add a natural touch to your home.
22 August 2019
BRING NATURE INDOORS • Shades of green are very on-trend and provide a lovely background for displays of plants. They are easy to live with and combine wonderfully with whites and off-whites, as well as natural materials such as timber, stone and linen. • Botanical-themed wallpaper and fabrics can be beautiful but quite overwhelming. If you prefer to keep the look relatively subtle, choose small-scale or delicate prints in shades of green and neutrals for background interest. • To make an impact with a display of real botanicals, choose large plants and position in strategic places, as you would a sculpture. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth centurystyle paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.

Town Hall Live in Kirton Town Hall Live (THL) continue
to bring the best in folk, roots and Americana music to Kirton. There are two concerts in August. The first is on Friday 2nd August, when The Dan Webster Band, from York, headline. The band are enjoying a successful year promoting their excellent album ‘Devil Sky’ and are playing many of the country’s leading festivals over the summer period. Dan is a seasoned song writer, performer and producer. His music is influenced by the sounds and storytelling traditions of both American and English music, which he uniquely blends into his own distinct fusion of folk and Americana. The band consists of Dan on guitar and vocals, Polly Bolton on mandolin and vocals, Emily Lawlor on violin and vocals, Rachel Brown on cello, Mark Waters on bass and Liam Hardy on drums. Then on Friday 23rd August, Tip Jar from Holland will headline. The trio are just back from a two-month stint in Texas and play their first ever gigs in the UK during the month. The band operates in the Americana genre, with country and jazz influences. Their founder is Bart De Win, who has previously appeared at THL as a member of Matthews Southern Comfort and Birds of Chicago, he plays keyboards and guitar. The line-up is completed by Bart’s wife Arianna Knegt on ukulele and vocals and Baer Traa on lead guitar. Last year they released their excellent album ‘Onward’, which is their fourth. It was produced by the legendary Walt Wilkins, and contains 11 eclectic songs, with Bart and Arianne’s vocals blending beautifully. Support comes from four-piece Hull band, The Snake Oil Charmers, who play and infectious blend of blues, country and swing. Tickets for the concerts can be purchased from The Costcutter store in Kirton, from Brian on 01652 649230 or from www.wegottickets. com. They are priced at £12.50 for The Dan Webster Band concert and £13.00 for the Tip Jar concert.

Amateur Gardeners The 39th annual show of
the Kirton in Lindsey Amateur Gardeners is just a couple of weeks away on Saturday 7th September and they are always looking for more people to enter items in the various classes available, they are not just gardening related. The classes include vegetables, fruit, flowers, pot plants, floral art, wine making, preserves, baking, classes for children, photography, art and craft classes. The class list is a real assortment to cater for many interests. The show schedules with all the information about the above and how to enter are out now. Many classes remain the same each year, but some change each year to provide variation, so why not consider entering. You can enter if you live within five miles of the Market Place where the show is held in the Town Hall or if you are a member of the club. The show is open for the public to view the exhibits from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Awards to the winners
of the Kirton in Bloom Competition will be presented as well. The society’s season of meetings continues on Wednesday 21st August at 7.30pm, in the Town Hall, Market Place, Kirton in Lindsey. The talk and presentation this time will be intriguingly titled ‘growing and showing gladioli’ and will be given by Anne Augustyns. Anne is from Hull and had an interest in these striking garden flowers for many years. She will be passing tips and hints on how to get the best out of them. At each meeting monthly competitions are held for members, this month it will be ‘one gladioli’. Future subjects include autumn gardening; gardening with alpines, bulbs and woodland plants and photographing plants. If you have any queries entering or need further information, then please contact Martin Hollingsworth, chair, on 01652 648435 or email@example.com or through Facebook ‘KLAGs (Kirton in Lindsey Amateur Gardeners)’.
After lots of rain in June, it certainly did not mirror the month of June we had last year. Marton Bowls Club’s Gala competition had to be abandoned after just two hours of play; but twelve teams and their friends were still able to enjoy a Marton Bowls Club lunch and take home their prizes from the raffle and tombola. The club are thankful for the support of everyone who came along. If you would like to try outdoor bowling for the first time or would like to practice and improve your game, the club’s friendly games ‘Roll-ups’ are
continuing on Thursday afternoons, weather permitting, starting at 2.00pm. You don’t need to book in advance, just go along on the day, to the green in Trent Port Road, near Marton Church and Village Hall. The club still has a number of postponed games still to play and current members may be playing extra games in August and September this year! Why not join them? For more information or details, please contact Barry on 01427 788911 or Mike on 01427 717087.
It’s summer, still time to try outdoor bowling!

Belle of the beach Kate Duggan on the suitcase essentials for your summer break Whether you’re planning a week in a luxury Caribbean villa or going camping in Cornwall, this little lot deserve a spot in your suitcase. I’m a big fan of dry shampoos, particularly for camping, festivals and lazy weekends. Philip Kingsley’s
One More Day Dry Shampoo is a good choice. It absorbs excess sebum, boosts volume and helps to prevent an itchy, irritated scalp. It’s a spray rather than a powder, so won’t leave you looking like you’ve been dusted with talc (unlike some other dry shampoos). The travel-sized 50ml bottle is perfect for holidays, although the 200ml is a lot better value for money. It’s £9.00 to £19.50, see www.philipkingsley.co.uk. I’m very tempted by the new Como Viaggio Travel Styling Kits by Alfa Italia. Each kit comprises a travel hairdryer, mini ceramic styling iron, two sectioning clips and a bag for just £44.95. Travel hair-styling products tend to be a bit ‘meh’ when it comes to power, but this hairdryer is 1200w and the straighteners heat up to 28 August 2019
190°c. Choose from dusky pink with a matching suede-effect case, or light blue or stone with a leather-look case, see www.alfaitaliapro.com. A facial oil can help to tackle dry patches, boost hydration and soften skin. Personally, I prefer a 100% natural oil like Gorgias London’s Age Renewal Facial Oil, which I’ve been using at nighttime for a few weeks now. It’s a 100% natural blend of seed and plant oils, including avocado, prickly pear, olive and argan. The blend is packed with nutrients, vitamins, fatty acids, omega 9 and antioxidants. My skin drinks it up and always feels softer and ‘happier’ the morning after using it. It costs £44.95 from www. gorgiaslondon. com. I know I’m not the only one of my friendship group who slathers on face cream but rarely uses body lotion. If you’re also guilty of neglecting 80% of your skin, AL!VE’s Hydrating Spray Lotion could be the answer. It takes seconds to spray on and absorbs super-fast. It also feels lovely and cool, so is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. Best of all, you can pick it up for just £5.00 from Sainsbury’s. If, like me, your legs are less smooth alabaster and more pale mottled mess, fake tan can be your friend. Had a bad experience
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Bondi Sands Protect & Tan; AL!VE Hydrating Spray Moisturiser; The O Range Complete Night Repair Facial Oil; Alfa Italia Como Viaggio Travel Styling Kits
with bright orange streaks? Modern formulas are a huge improvement on their predecessors. Just exfoliate and moisturise well before you start. Bondi Sands’ Protect and Tan is a great introduction to self-tanning. As the name implies, it helps to protect your skin from the sun and builds a gradual, natural-looking tan over a few days of use. It’s SPF 15 so not strong enough for sunbathing but perfect if you’re popping to the shops. It’s an oil, but not greasy, and it leaves skin feeling softer for hours afterwards. It’s £12.99 at www.boots.com.

Mighty Mudder in aisd of St Barnabus Hospice
The Mighter Mudder St Barnabas Hospice
has launched their brandnew event, Mighty Mudder, taking place in September. On Sunday 22nd September, St Barnabas Hospice will be hosting Lincolnshire’s first Mighty Mudder event at Ancaster Leisure. The hospice has introduced this 5k obstacle course run event to the county, to help raise vital funds to support end-of-life care locally. With more than 60 obstacles to overcome, the Mighty Mudder will see participants run through fields of mud, crawl through tunnels, swing through trees, slide down 50ft drops, wade through muddy water and battle their way up hills, all whilst completing a 5k course. Opening at 10.00am at Ancaster Leisure, Wood Lodge, NG32 3PY, participants will have the opportunity to visit the event village before they start the event, which is full of food, drink and games. They will be set off in waves of 100, which they can preselect online when signing up. There is also plenty to do for friends and family members, including places around the course which are brilliant to stand and watch the participants as they go past. Melissa Gaffney, Events Fundraiser at St Barnabas Hospice, said: “I started working for the Hospice earlier this year and I’m so excited to be launching this brand new event
already. In my spare time, I often take part in mass participation sporting events, so it’s great that I can bring this passion to our event. “Since joining St Barnabas, I’ve met so many amazing people who come together at these events to raise money in memory of loved ones, reach personal goals or to have fun. Mighty Mudder is the perfect event for those wanting a challenge that’s a little different, whether you want to raise sponsorship money or not.” New for this event, St Barnabas has decided to offer two different types of tickets. Participants wanting to raise money for the hospice will be able to pay a lower registration fee of £25.00, providing they pledge a minimum sponsorship of £50.00. Alternatively, participants can pay a £55.00 registration fee if they decide not to raise sponsorship money. These are early bird prices and will be available for a limited time until Sunday 28th July. Children aged 14 to 17 can also take part for a flat rate of £10.00 and are encouraged to raise as much money as they are able. The hospice does ask that there is one adult per two children when signing up. Early bird tickets are now on sale for this exciting new event. How to get online on holiday We make sense of mobile data and dongles Going online is a necessity for many travellers. It enables us to get accurate weather predictions, to check flight statuses and to find out about local tourist attractions. So how do you get connected when you’re far from home? Many hotels, resorts and attractions promise free Wi-Fi, but in some cases the Wi-Fi is limited to a single device, and you’ll often find that the service is too slow to stream TV programmes. In some cases the Wi-Fi will block specific servers and websites. You can get around the single-device limit if you have a smartphone with a Personal Hotspot feature. This creates a Wi-Fi network that other devices can connect to, but all the data runs through the phone. It won’t change any blocks on streaming — if you’re determined, you can get around them using Virtual Private Networking software — or speed up very slow internet connections, but it does mean the kids can connect their Kindle Fires or other devices
36 August 2019
when the weather isn’t brilliant. Sometimes, the best way to go online is to use your phone’s data connection — 4G coverage in most big holiday destinations is very good. The main concern is the potential cost, with some tourists running up massive mobile phone bills during their holiday. But mobile data needn’t be expensive. It might even be free. Each major operator has a list of countries where you don’t need to worry about big data bills, so for example Vodafone offers free roaming across 48 different countries on Pay As You Go and 77 countries on contracts that include Global Roaming Plus. Always check before you go: if your phone contract doesn’t include roaming you can usually buy a roaming add-on, such as a certain amount of data for a fixed fee. It’s usually much cheaper to buy a data bundle than to incur charges when you’re abroad, and if you need more you can buy another one via your provider’s app or website. But check coverage — you can’t use your phone if your destination has no signal. If you want to connect laptops or other devices and your phone doesn’t have the virtual hotspot feature, another option is to invest in a data dongle. This can be a device that plugs into your laptop’s USB port to give it mobile data access, or it can be a dedicated device that creates a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. At the time of writing, Vodafone’s mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is £50.00 on Pay As You Go. That price includes 15GB of mobile data, which lasts for up to 90 days before expiring. If you’re using public Wi-Fi networks, be very careful: it’s really easy to set up a convincing-looking but fake Wi-Fi hotspot to intercept people’s internet traffic. If you need to do secure things such as online banking, consider investing in an app such as Tunnelbear. It creates a secure,

your-eyes-only tunnel between you and the site or service you’re using.

Summer berry sponge puddings Smothered with warm berry compote, these delicious lemony sponge puddings will go down a treat after a Sunday roast. Serve with a dollop of crème fraiche or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. INGREDIENTS • 115g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 225g caster sugar • Zest of a lemon • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 125g self-raising flour, sifted • 1tbsp milk TASTY TOP TIP You can replace the fresh berries with the same amount of frozen mixed berries, if liked. 42 August 2019
• 300g mixed summer berries such as redcurrants, blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants • 2tsp arrowroot blended with 1tbsp cold water METHOD • Thoroughly grease four 175ml pudding basins with butter. Preheat the oven to 190°c / fan 170°c / gas mark 5. • Place the butter and 115g of the sugar in a bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Beat in the lemon zest then gradually beat in the eggs, adding 1tbsp of the flour if the mixture starts to curdle. Fold in the rest of the flour with the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. • Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated buttered foil,
scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a large roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until risen and firm to the touch. • Meanwhile, place the berries in a pan with the remaining sugar and 2tbsp water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for five to six minutes until the fruit has softened. Stir in the blended arrowroot and simmer, stirring all the time, for another four to five minutes until thickened. • Turn the hot puddings out onto serving plates and spoon over the warm fruit compote. Serve immediately.

Plea from Caskgate Street Surgery Patient Participation Group Patients who fail to attend
appointments continues to be a major problem nationally. In England, 4.5 million patients have already missed appointments this year at a cost of £130 million. Lincolnshire West Clinical Commissioning Group reported that 14,000 appointments were missed in the first four months of this year at an estimated cost of £423,000 — enough to pay 18 full time nurses! This means than in our area we have one patient in every 23 failing to turn up for their appointment and one in every 19 appointments were missed in the Bassetlaw area. Caskgate Street Surgery operates a text reminder system to remind patients of their appointment, yet we still have this huge problem. NHS England is continuing to encourage patients to cancel appointments in good time, stating: “We urge everyone to let their practice know in good time if they are going to miss their appointment or they no longer need it, so that GPs and nurses can treat those in greater need.” Please help to reduce the unnecessary cost of missed appointments.
The Youth and Employer Support
(YES) Project is an innovative and unique approach to tackling youth unemployment — working with employers and young people to increase opportunities for people and business. The project is a new four-year programme funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and is delivered in partnership with Voluntary Centre Services West Lindsey and Acis Group. The project will provide free employability and lifestyle support for young people aged 16 to 30 to help them into work, along with dedicated employer support to ensure young people receive a positive experience in the world of work.

Power of publicity helps boost numbers The power of publicity led to
growing numbers at a Thursday night ‘Bat and Chat’ session — and ensured Blitz Table Tennis Club could keep their club night going. Steve Fox, the project organiser at the Gainsborough club, said: “We had a Thursday night club session where we really needed to increase the numbers attending or potentially lose that club night.” Aiming to try new ways to attract new members to the club, Steve approached Table Tennis England Development and volunteering officer Mark Willerton and it was decided to submit an application for Be TT funding for a new ‘Bat and Chat’ session. The application was successful but a slow few weeks left the club wondering whether evening Bat and Chat sessions would work. Then a feature in Gainsborough Life changed everything. The feature had an immediate impact, with 11 new members
YES Project Ben Barley, chief executive at Voluntary Centre Services (VCS) said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for us to build upon existing provision for young people in West Lindsey and opening up new opportunities, whilst helping young people overcome barriers and challenges in finding employment.” The youth engagement lead offers 1:1, bespoke support for participants with information, advice and guidance as well as mentoring and coaching. Referrals to the project can be made by any third party or by self-referral and participants should be open to making
attending the session the following week, nearly all of whom had seen the article in the magazine. Now the weekly Thursday night is going from strength to strength and head coach Paul Johnson said: “We knew there was interest for a social table tennis in Gainsborough, we just couldn’t get people there.” Mark Willerton and Table Tennis England national delivery lead Jenny Leach recently visited the session and both enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere to play table tennis. Mark said: “It’s not a traditional bat and chat, in the sense that it attracts as many families as over50s, but people really do make the session lovely, friendly and welcoming to all ages and abilities. “It was fantastic to see mum, dad, brother and sister all playing together in a game of social doubles! The employer lead will bridge the gap between employers and potential employees and will work to support local companies in recruiting more young people to their workforce. The YES Project follows in the footsteps of Talent Match, a project which had a proven track record in making a difference to the lives of young people across the county. Abbie wakes in a hospital bed to discover everything she thinks she knows to be true is wrong. She’s an AI who’s been created by her tech genius husband using memories of the real Abbie, who died five years before. As she struggles to come to terms with her life, Abbie starts to question everything she’s been told. But when she has no rights, who can she trust? Suspense, twists and moral quandaries abound in this skilful thriller.
Lauren is convinced someone is planning to abduct her newborn twins, so when they go missing it seems her fears were justified. But when the twins are found, Lauren is convinced they’re not hers. Have they been swapped for changelings like she believes, or is Lauren suffering from post-partum psychosis? Is she the only one who can save the babies, or is she the one who’s putting them in danger? A chilling page-turner that keeps you guessing. VEGAN ONE POUND MEALS Miguel Barclay This book proves that vegan food can be as delicious, easy and inexpensive as it is healthy. There are twists on classic dishes, such as ‘artichoke paella’, ‘cashew pesto pasta’ and ‘tomato tarte tatin’, along with plenty of original dishes, such as ‘kimchi tacos’ and ‘sticky aubergine bao’. Most only use a handful of ingredients and all work out at around £1.00 per portion. Recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a mouth-watering image. Add some vertical interest Whether your garden is
large or small, long, wide or a completely uneven shape, you can guarantee that it will benefit from having some height added to it — and what better way to do this than by erecting an arch or arbour? The great thing is that, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too… So what are the advantages of a bit of vertical structural interest (aside from the plants it can support) and how can you make the very best of them in your garden? Position an arbour so that it overlooks a good view or particularly attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. You can also use an
50 August 2019
Pippa Greenwood on installing a vertical structure in your garden to make a new planting opportunity arch or even an arbour as a means of dividing your garden into one or more rooms. This age-old designer’s trick can make your garden seem a lot larger and more interesting. Chosen carefully, arches and arbours themselves are good looking and can be a feature in their own right, so don’t necessarily go for the first one you see; shop around and remember that if you clothe them with climbers, you are adding to their appeal. Some plants look great but others have another secret ingredient: scented climbers, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally
transform the whole garden as their perfume wafts out for you to enjoy. If an arbour is situated in a sunny spot and you have fairly free-draining soil, why not plant an area around it with lavenders? Then you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves as you sit and relax after a stressful day. In sunny positions, thymes or camomile can be used to great effect on the approach to your archway or arbour — when your feet gently crush the thyme or camomile lawn, a fantastic aroma will be released. Arches and arbours are available ►

Add some vertical interest ◄ in a wide range of materials, but by far the most popular are those made from wood or metal. To a large extent it is a case of shopping around to find something that suits your garden style, the purpose you have in mind for it and, of course, your budget. I am a great fan of wood or metal because I find that they both fit in well with the sort of gardening style I like and, of course, you can always use one of the numerous and readily available wood stains or paints to transform it from its natural subtly coloured state to a bright blue, rich red or pretty well any colour you fancy! Although it is possible to construct an arch or an arbour from scratch yourself, you will be amazed at the range of ready-made arbours and kits for both arches and arbours that are now available. If you choose wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either naturally
going to resist decay — western red cedar or a hardwood such as oak would be my first choice, with Douglas fir or larch a close second. Alternatively you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressure-treated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper. By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this somewhat more rustic look fits in well with a particularly informal garden. Many of these are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install. To find out just what’s available, it is well worth paying a visit to several local garden centres or taking a look at mail-order products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier!

Recycling your waste water Rachel Leverton keeps it eco in the garden I like to consider myself an ecogardener. I use few pesticides and I recycle, upcycle and repurpose whenever I can. Like many people I own and use several water butts, which are a fantastic way to utilise all the lovely free rainwater nature provides. Over the past few years I’ve been reading and researching about other sources of water too. I’m talking about grey water. But what is grey water and how can gardeners make use of it? Grey water, for those not in the know, is any kind of household wastewater apart from toilet water, which is considered ‘black water’, and which should definitely not be recycled by the average gardener. You can reclaim water from your washing machine or dishwasher, but this can prove costly and time consuming. 54 August 2019
TOP TIPS • Keep it simple — It is possible to buy special kits to convert all your home’s grey water for garden-usage, but these can prove expensive. You’re more likely to try something that’s cheap and easy. If you really get into water-recycling though, then go for it! • Think natural — Switch to environmentally friendly cleaning and beauty products. These are biodegradable and won’t harm your plants. • Don’t forget the shower — Put the plug in when you shower, and you can save the water for the garden. • Safetyfirst — All grey water will contain some bacteria. Use it within 24 hours but don’t use it for edible plants or for pots and containers, only on decorative border plants. • Think laterally — You don’t have to restrict greywater to garden usage. Use it to clean the car too!
The best advice for us amateur eco-gardeners is ‘keep it simple’, especially in the first instance. Basically, this means water from the kitchen sink, the bath or shower, or paddling pool. Getting grey water to the garden is not difficult. In the case of washingup water, simply use a removable plastic bowl in the sink which can be carried out. For baths and paddling pools ask at your garden centre or local DIY store for a water siphon hand pump. All you have to do is prime the siphon with a couple of squeezes then let the water run out into your temporary storage containers. Once you have the grey water you
need to clean it before using it in the garden. This involves filtering it into a large watering can through a piece of fleece or muslin to remove any debris and obvious residue. The water should then be left to cool. It needs to be used within 24 hours to prevent bacterial build-up. Now that many of us are on water meters recycling our water makes both good environmental and sound economic sense too.

Riverside Indoor Bowls Club update
The Riverside Indoor Bowls Club (RIB) has had a very busy month. They attended the Armed Forces Day, on Middlefield Lane and it was very successful for the Gainsborough Town Council and the RIB’s members and many other charities. The town council made it a glorious day for the community and their efforts were rewarded by the 2,000 who attended to see the re-enactments, child displays, an act of remembrance, display of military vehicles, entertainment and children activities. The club had two tables and as well as selling items to raise funds, they spoke to a lot of people about their aim to bring indoor bowls back to Gainsborough. People also tried out their skills at playing outdoor bowls on the Middlefield /Marshalls Sports Field, including small children. It was good to see their enthusiasm. It was the Corringham Primary School fayre on Friday 5th July, where members were in attendance and sold goods and raffle tickets for the grand raffle and had a good chat to people. Another event on Friday 19th July was attended at the
Blues Club, where a fun quiz was held and supported by indoor and outdoor members. It was fun and very competitive with many prizes. Please support RIB in their latest exciting project to build a new indoor bowls facility, to encourage more of the community to become active and to have a go at enjoying this fantastic sport. The club promote friendship and it makes no difference if you have never played bowls before. This new project will involve the group working with other community groups and sporting clubs and people are invited to get in contact to help. The next fundraising event will be on Saturday 31st August, at the Meynell Kindergarden Fete, Laughton, from 11.00am. There will also be another tabletop sale, their fourth, at Morton Village Hall in September. If you wish to support the club please contact Lynda and Roy Enever, on 01427 614627 or Linda Grocock on 01427 614682. They have a large raffle full of gifts from surrounding businesses and would appreciate anyone buying tickets.
Retford & District Photographic Society Trip to Bempton Cliffs Members of Retford and District Photographic Society have recently enjoyed their summer trip to photograph gannets diving for fish off Bempton Cliffs. A forecast of violent thunderstorms and torrential rain almost called it off, but fortunately the storm passed quickly and the only impact was an hour’s delay to the start. Having to get there for 6.30am rather than 5.30am didn’t upset anyone. The cliffs are an 80-minute boat ride from Bridlington and the group knew they had arrived by the large following of birds, well used to their boat, impatiently gathering in the breakfast queue. The captain threw fish out and 56 August 2019
members were treated to the spectacular sight of gannets diving just a couple of metres from the boat. They found it hard to look through the viewfinder rather than gazing in awe at such an unforgettable sight. The group were grateful to Steve Race of Yorkshire Coast Nature, tutor for the morning, who provided technical advice everyone went home with their cameras full of memorable photos. Jane Brownley, the group’s trip organiser, had scored another notable request. Once back ashore, those who still had an appetite for more gannets set off to watch them from the RSPB
reserve on top of Bempton Cliffs. If you would like to be part of a group which offers opportunities like this, there is a warm welcome awaiting you, when the society’s new season begins on Monday 2nd September. Meetings continue weekly on Mondays at 7.30pm until the end of April 2020, at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road. Just go along or contact the society via their website so that they can look out for you. For more information see www. retford-photographic.co.uk.

First Drives: Honda Civic “Where’s the gearstick?” I panic as I sit in the driver’s seat of the Honda Civic 1.6 diesel. “You don’t need a gearstick,” says my son Henry (aged three). He knows about these things. This automatic version has an exceedingly minimalist nine speed automatic unit that takes a short while to get used to. Honda always seems to develop new and inspired futuristic design features that others follow years later. Of course, that design is also extremely aerodynamic, aiding efficiency. Look in the boot and there’s a sliding parcel shelf and there’s lots of digital jiggery pokery on the dashboard, some of which shows it reaching 80mpg during the test, encouraging economical driving. I’ve just had a week with the considerably wider Jaguar E-Pace that felt quite clumsy in comparison to the smaller Honda. I also found the Jag’s interior to be very dark. Not so in the Civic, where there’s a generous electric tilt/slide glass roof. Another surprise for me is that the Civic is lower to the ground than my wife’s Vauxhall Corsa and feels very sporty as a consequence. It certainly doesn’t feel like a five-door family hatchback and is completely different to the last Civic model it replaces. It is finished in eye-catching Brilliant Sporty Blue Metallic and while the front certainly demands your attention, I cannot help but feel that the angular front bumper could age quite quickly in this fashion conscience world we live in. Just before I embark on a journey to Kent, I must drop my wife off at the library to return a few books. After doing this
Tim Saunders finds a Honda that proves that diesel isn’t quite dead yet there’s a persistent bleeping from the sensors alerting me to something that it does not like — it tells me it’s underneath the car, but this clearly is not the case — as we make our way out of the car park. I don’t need this aggravation at the best of times and certainly not in a vehicle with which I am unfamiliar. It finally stops as I leave the car park. Perhaps the cars were all too near the sensors and it didn’t like it. I don’t know. Thankfully this experience does not repeat itself during my week with my sporty red friend and things quickly improve. I am determined to stick to the speed limits as we head down the M27 towards the A3 and the intelligent cruise control really helps me as it rigidly adheres to the 50mph limits often in place these days. Just as well too, because we count some 17 police vehicles, many unmarked whipping down the outside lane after speeding motorists, providing my back seat passengers with plenty of entertainment. It is only when I have been driving for a couple of hours that I realise the seat is a little high compared to my wife’s. Lowering the driver’s seat provides a much better driving position. Now it really does feel like a sports car. I begin to like it very much.

driver-assisting safety aids, such as collision avoidance systems. I don’t hold with diehards who say it takes away some of the skill of driving, promotes an over-reliance on technology and thus responsibility for a driver’s actions. After all, if you take this argument to its conclusion, a brake light is a driver aid, is it not? But my caution in the reliance of these systems comes from the question of how well they will continue to perform on second- and third-hand cars.
Anecdotal evidence, from a garage-owning colleague, shows that many second-owner luxury cars that come in for an electrical fault are often exhibiting serious issues with the other electronic systems. Faulty AC is one thing, faulty ABS quite another. It’s accepted that parts will wear-out on any mechanicalelectronic device. However, should brake pads wear and lose their effectiveness, a driver will still apply them. But, for example, a

faulty collision avoidance system may not apply the brakes at all, whilst the driver makes no attempt to brake manually. Aviation technology has reached a point where aircraft electronic systems could well do a better job than the pilot, but airlines still have a couple up front, just in case. Car safety technology is great and makes a big contribution to accident avoidance, but just like the airline pilot, a driver still needs to be there, just in case.

Chris Barnacoat looks at how to balance your calorie intake I have written articles about calories in the past. I will write articles about calories in the future. The reason for this is quite simple, they are very important, not only for weight loss but for recovery, sleep and health in general. This month I would like to share with you a theory which I have spoken to my clients about for some time now; the ‘calorie window’. A CALORIE IS… First off, a quick bit of science. A calorie is the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree celsius. And that’s it. That’s all a calorie is. There is nothing magical about it — it is not related to being sinful or being red or green or being good or bad. It is a measure of heat energy. Now, to get even more ‘wacky voodoo’ on you, the first law of thermodynamics, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or changed from one form to another. And this is what the body does with calories. It produces energy (and you consume it via food) then transfers it around the body for various activities. So, by that rationale, the quality of the energy which is produced (or consumed) will dictate the quality of the outcome. QUALITY OF ENERGY Do you feel tired all the time? Are you not losing weight? Are you not recovering from your workouts? Well, have you ever thought that maybe the quality of the energy you are producing (and consuming) is not good enough to create the outcome you are hoping for? If you put the incorrect fuel into your car you cannot expect it to perform particularly well. With the human body, if you are getting calories which are not connected to good quality nutrients, then the 66 August 2019
The calorie window same poor outcome will arise. THE CALORIE WINDOW Everyone has a resting metabolic rate, which means that if you sit down and do not move for 24 hours you will still ‘burn’ a certain number of calories. These calories are used for a multitude of tasks, such as maintaining body temperature, keeping the heart beating and the various systems (such as immune, digestive and respiratory systems) operational. Performing your daily tasks then requires an increase in calories, but consume too many and you will store them as body fat to be used as an energy source later. The ‘window’ is the few hundred calories buffer where you have covered all your fundamentals but have enough excess to use as energy for a workout. This can then lead to the all-important calorie deficit
needed to lose body fat (the quality of calories also leads to improved sleep, recovery and overall health). It is important to realise that if you have not consumed enough calories to cover your fundamentals (such as maintaining body temperature and keeping the heart beating), then your body will not prioritise losing body fat. Not only that, but those all-important fundamentals will start to shut down at the decline of your health, hence the reason why under eating can cause weight gain and health issues. So, the question is, do you know your ‘window’? If you are confused by nutrition and would like help, contact a professional to help you reach your health and fitness goals quicker and more effectively. Chris Barnacoat www.satorihealth.co.uk

your ultimate destination, taking an indirect flight can save you money, particularly in the case of long-haul journeys. It does cost you more in time, however, so this may not appeal to everyone. AVOID THE ADDED FLIGHT EXTRAS Flight extras such as extra legroom, on-board meal, and additional luggage allowances, add a considerable sum to your ‘cheap’ flight if you’re not careful. Some airlines include these elements in the advertised price but beware if you are using a budget operator, as they may be added extras.
Quick and easy ways to save money on your summer holiday Summer holidays provide
much-needed rest and relaxation in the middle of our oftenbusy year, and may even be considered essential to our health and wellbeing. They do not need to cost the earth, but how can you save money without detracting from the enjoyment of this precious time away? Here are a few tips to free up some extra spending money for this year’s holiday, or cash to put towards your getaway next year. NEGOTIATE ON PRICE It is possible to negotiate down your holiday price, particularly if it’s last minute. Tour and hotel 70 August 2019
operators are likely to be open to negotiation if it means they can fill the last few places on a tour, or the remaining empty airline seats. CHOOSE YOUR TRAVEL TIMES CAREFULLY The times you travel can directly influence price so if you are able to fly during the night, for example, you may be able to save some money. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are said to be less popular for travelling when compared with Fridays and over the weekend, so if you can go midweek it might be worth it. DO YOU NEED TO FLY DIRECT? If you don’t need to fly directly to
COMBINE AIRPORT HOTEL AND PARKING If you are travelling early in the morning or from an airport a long way from home, you may need to stay in an airport hotel the night before. If so, you can save money by combining the accommodation costs with car parking for the duration of your holiday. TRAVEL WHILE YOU SLEEP Travelling while you sleep is a great way to make savings on the cost of your holiday. Whether you are starting your journey by train, coach or cross-channel ferry, overnight travel using these methods can be considerably cheaper than booking a hotel for the night. INDEPENDENT EXCURSIONS The cost of excursions can be eyewatering, especially for a family, so try organising your own days out to save money. You may be able to buy admission tickets to attractions and events before you go on holiday, and by booking transport locally you will have a truly authentic experience. Going to different places and enjoying new experiences are life-affirming, and can be more affordable than you think. Save money on your summer holiday by driving down prices across the board, whether that is for an all-inclusive package deal or an independently created journey of a lifetime.

Fascinating history of town centre Gainsborough Town Square
is the subject for Gainsborough Life reader Tom Ellis’ latest picture. The beautiful history that surrounds this part of the town is simply fascinating. Years ago, there was a time when the square was used to park cars regularly, but it is more pedestrianised nowadays. Recently, famous French chef, Jean Christophe Novelli gave the town a cooking demonstration the other week during the Food and Garden Festival that was held in the pictured square. Towards the
