CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GAINSBOROUGH LIFE!

Welcome!

Are you breathing a sigh of relief that the summer holidays have arrived, or are you worried about how you will keep the children entertained? Whatever you may feel about the holidays, we have so many ideas in this month’s magazine for family fun, that you cannot help but have a great time. Our comprehensive family fun guide is on pages 12, 14 and 16. If you are off on holiday in the coming weeks, don’t miss The Consumer Champion’s advice on page 74, who prepares you for any mishap that may come your way. This year marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and we are publishing extracts from Misterton historian, David Seymour. His series of books on Misterton and West Stockwith before, during and after the Great War are a window in to local history, read more on pages 34 and 36. for the seven crewmen of the Lancaster that crashed in 1945. Read more on page 71. Thank you for all your nominations for Gainsborough Life’s favourite volunteer — we find out who your favourite is on pages 54 and 56. With all the hot weather of late, it hasn’t been easy on us gardeners. Don’t forget to check in with this month’s gardening features from pages 58 to 63, for great advice from Pippa Greenwood and Rachel Leverton. Perhaps you’re thinking of making the most of the summer and investing in a convertible? There’s bargains to be had if you know what you’re looking for — read more on page 46. We also have three fabulous competitions this month, enter now on pages 22, 30 and 43. We hope you have a lovely summer — and keep cool too!

LIFEstYLE

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GAINSBOROUGH LIFE!

#CelebrateGainsborough formulated to reduce inflammation and irritation. As the name suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts.co.uk. If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for:

Staying safe in the sun Don’t know your UVA from

your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you… First up — the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn. ‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours. Weleda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion protects against both UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skin-friendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at £13.95, the lotion can be

bought online from www.weleda.co.uk. If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list. Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel is a good choice. It has an instant cooling effect, is hypoallergenic and helps to restore hydration. The gel costs £5.59 from Holland & Barrett. Do you suffer from prickly heat, or find you only have to look at the sun to go red? Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum is worth a try. It’s specially

• Asymmetry — the two halves of the area may differ in shape. • Border — the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. • Colour — this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. • Diameter — most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Report any change in size, shape or diameter to your doctor. • Expert — if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist. Your GP can refer you via the NHS. For more information about protecting your skin, check out www.bad.org.uk.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GAINSBOROUGH LIFE!

The Arts Society Gainsborough & District Dr Twigs Way, professional garden historian, author and researcher, was the guest speaker to members of the Arts Society at the Trinity Centre. This was a popular talk which explored the life of Gertrude Jekyll, the influences on her early work in art and crafts, her transfer to Munstead Wood and her working relationship with Edwin Lutyens, as well as her own writings and achievements. Almost eighty years after her death, Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) is still one of the most influential of all English garden designers. Best known for her superb use of colour schemes in her hallmark flower borders, she combined an early training in art, with self-taught horticultural skills. Early influences included William Morris, John Ruskin and William Robinson, but it is her partnership with the architect Edwin Lutyens that produced some of the most distinctive of Edwardian houses and gardens. From her house (and nursery) at Munstead Wood, Surrey, Jekyll designed over 400 gardens across Britain and Europe, and some in America — where her archive of designs and drawings is now held. Through her articles and books, she became the defining voice of early to mid-20th century garden design, creating a style many gardeners still aspire to today. The next lecture of the Arts Society will be on 6th September, when Dr Christopher de Hamel, will speak on ‘Medieval Manuscripts’. Always at 1.45pm in the Trinity Arts Centre, Gainsborough, (call 01427 676655) on the first Thursday of the month – except the months of January, July and August. For membership information, please call 01427 788550. Visitors are also very welcome for a £7.00 entrance fee. For further general information, please call chair, Susan Hollingworth, on 07880 500762. A light lunch is bookable from 12.00pm, with Cooks the Caterers on 01469 532020, (please call after 6.00pm), by the preceding Monday please! 18 August 2018

Rotarians visit The Old Nick

The Rotary club recently had one of its regular ‘away-days’. This was a visit to The Old Nick Police Museum and Theatre. Twenty-one people turned up for the visit and were royally entertained by the staff of the Museum. A special mention has to go to Eleanor and to Christine for all the hard work they put in preparing for our visit. A welcoming bar followed by a buffet meal went down very well with us visitors before we embarked on our tour of the establishment. We were divided into three groups and with our knowledgeable guides we took the tour. The museum is a place well worth visiting and the history of Lincolnshire Police, as well as the history of the listed building is something not to be missed. The theatre is also interesting as it puts on the performance in the round thus making the audience a

part the acting experience rather than having them just sitting there and applauding. Watch out for their next performance and become part of the experience. There are rumours that the building is haunted, but this writer did not experience any “contacts”, or pick up on anything, despite being someone who is supposed to be receptive to such things. I will keep an open mind on this matter. The photographs show some of the members enjoying their buffet and then participating in the tour. A visit to the museum is something not to be missed, it comes highly recommended by the members of the Rotary Club of Gainsborough. A big thank you goes out the Eleanor and Christine and the rest of their team for making us welcome and for ‘putting on a show’.

What’s on at St Paul’s Church, Morton At St Paul’s Church Morton — Gainsborough Musical Theatre Society (GMTS) presents “Under the Spotlight” a concert of Songs from the Musicals. Including — Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, Hairspray, 42nd Street, Sister Act, Shrek, Les Misérables and many more. This will be the third year running that we have hosted this very talented group of singers at St Paul’s. The concert will be an evening of show music not to be missed. Why pay West End theatre prices when you can enjoy songs from the musicals nearer to home? The concert will be held on Saturday 8th September, commencing at 7.30pm. Admission costs £6.00 per

ticket and children accompanied by adults will be admitted free. As part of Heritage Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days 2018 we have been asked to open the church. This is so that the ten windows designed by the great Victorian artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones, who worked on them in co-operation with designer William Morris , which are a rare and valuable possession can be viewed. The church will be open on Saturday 8th September and Sunday 16th September, from 10.00am to 4.00pm both days. Further information about the above two events can be obtained from the Churchwarden Alan Clapham at ca.clapham@talk21.com.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GAINSBOROUGH LIFE!

#CelebrateGainsborough

Celebrating 50 years 1968 - 2018 This year Sundown

Adventureland will be celebrating 50 years of being open to the public. Mrs Rhodes the owner was surprised with an anniversary bench on her 89th birthday from her daughter and other family members and it was placed outside the gift shop where she still works every day! To celebrate the 50th anniversary Sundown will be having a year of fun and celebrations. There are discounted tickets and annual passes as well as special events going on every month from Trick or Treating at Halloween to Teddy bears picnics hosted by Andy and Lewis and of course Honey and Sunny bear will be there to play games and dance every Thursday in august during the summer holidays. Not to mention all the great rides, from bouncing round on the back of an Ostrich to spinning round on the Okie Yolkie ride as well as lots of other attractions to enjoy as you make your way around the park for a full day of fun and adventure. Sundown has changed so much over the years since they kept

monkeys, parrots and other exotic animals and served tea and cakes from the bungalow. Before the park opened for admissions Mr and Mrs Rhodes kept chickens, grew and sold local produce to their neighbours and to this day still use local businesses to supply the park. As the visitors flooded in, they added more play areas and rides and the attraction now sits on a site that extends over 60 acres. But the investment hasn’t stopped there. Despite Mrs. Rhodes now

coming up to 90 years old herself, she’s still as hands-on now as she was back in 1968. But that’s not a surprise to many, as some of the staff who joined the business back then, are still welcoming guests today — even in their late 80’s. Sundown has grown so much over the years and now sees a quarter of a million guests every year to their Theme Park for the Under 10’s, the site keeps growing with new attractions and themed areas and they have great plans in the pipeline to keep loyal guests coming back year after year. New for 2018 the Monkey Mayhem Driving School it is a chance for kids to drive jungle themed 4x4 mini jeeps around the newly designed course. Why not come down and be one of the first to pass your driving test with Mrs Bell! Everyone at Sundown is looking forward to the next 50 years, Mrs Rhodes and her family would like to thank all their loyal customers for their continued support over the last 50 plus years and hopes to see you all running, swinging, climbing and exploring for many more years to come. So come on kids there’s lots to see and do…. your adventure is just beginning!

Tim Rice Flooring has been established for over 35 years supplying flooring, carpets and easy lawns to Gainsborough and Surrounding areas. Through this time they’ve had their fair share of challenges, but on Christmas Eve, they faced one of the biggest. A fire broke out in the showroom in Thornton Street Industrial Estate, causing extensive damage to the kitchen, office and the showroom with thousands of pounds worth of equipment and stock damaged or destroyed. A challenging time indeed, this didn’t stop them from continuing their business to their clients. Tim and Josh who are the measurers and fitters used the family home as the base whilst Anette worked from an office in the family home too. After what has seemed like a long 8 months they are glad to say that the new and refurbished showroom is open again on Unit 2c Thornton Street Industrial Estate Gainsborough. If you want a great carpet from a local family run business then please feel free to call or pop in to speak to Annette to see how they can help furnish your home.

What interior design style are you? Danielle Durkan on finding your interior design style

This may not be the easiest question to answer as it really comes down to a few factors — personality, income, location, space, etc. If you are one of those who has no idea about design or even your own taste, a professional interior designer can help. It is about taking steps towards getting to know yourself and your home or business if that is what you need to work on. To do this I would say, get online! Instagram and Pinterest are the best places to see a broad range of styles. I would say that Pinterest tends to lean towards specific styles, whereas Instagram often shows actual lifestyle photography or projects completed by designers, therefore you are given a wider more trend-based appeal. On the other hand, Pinterest is great for practical solutions and ideas. Take a look at these social medias and see if anything appeals to you, You then need to understand why you were attracted to it in the first place. You will either fit into one of three categories, either Modern, Contemporary or Traditional. Please 26 August 2018

do not think this relates to very new and very old styles, as they cover very long periods of time in design. However these terms are loosely used to relate to people who are not aware of the art movements. For those of you who say I like modern design, did you know that modernism began in 1880 and spanned to 1940, contemporary from 1945 to 1960. There are many styles that fit under the umbrella of Modern. To recognise this look, you should see, clean sharp lines on furniture, mostly rectangles and squares, form should be quite simplified, fresh simple palette of whites, greys, blacks, use of materials such as glass, metal and steel. It relies highly on the simplicity of all its elements. It is clear and to the point and has a very calm and relaxed nature to it due to its lack of clutter and organisation. This is not the style for someone who likes collectables or a very cosy, homely feel. This is very much a style you would either love or hate. Styles that fit into this would be Minimalist (a more extreme version of modern), Scandinavian, mid-century modern, industrial, and eclectic.

Traditional styles include Egyptian, Greek, Medieval, Renaissance, Jacobean, Colonial, Rococo, Art Nouveau, and the arts and crafts movement. What these styles all have in common is the opposite to modern, they are all about detail, therefore no sharp clean simple forms. It is all about curves, intricate detailing, layers and levels to various pieces of furniture is the norm. Colour changed throughout these periods but at times, it was simple, due to methods of application, meaning paint effects were very different than today, so colour was not always solid or as achievable. So, think muted tones, also some rich tones, but stay away from acidic tones as these did not exist. Think woods, engravings, chunky furniture that does not fade into the background, and a more organised layout to the space. Contemporary style is very much about what is current, so it is ever-changing, it does mix with the modern look quite often which works if you know what you are doing. Contemporary is more fluid than modern and is all about the current and not being as specific to one style. Contemporary style can have curved lines, whereas modern won’t. You must be open to how and where you may source. Maybe you are on the border of all these styles, you may fit into the transitional style. It takes elements from both periods and brings them together in a seamless way. It’s great for those who want the best of both. Danielle writes an interior design blog at www. danielledurkandesigns.com and you can also check out her Instagram, Interiorsby_d.l.d.

St Barnabas Hospice relaunch services

#CelebrateGainsborough

Without wanting to sound like

too much of a British stereotype, I think I can only begin this month, by mentioning the weather… it’s fair to say that at the time of writing this, summer has well a truly arrived! We struck gold with the sunshine on the day of our Vintage Coffee Morning, which I hope was enjoyed by all those who attended. We raised over £100, which will go toward funding that £11 million it takes to run our services annually, so I would like to thank everyone who came and gave so generously. Special thanks also go to GMC Sing from the Heart, who were kind enough to provide fabulous entertainment for the morning, performing classics that ranged from The Beatles, all the way through to ABBA! I am also extremely excited to announce that we are re-launching the services that we provide from St Barnabas, Gainsborough. We will be providing weekly Day Therapy days once again, and we are hoping engage with the local community, to really spread the word about the extensive range of services we can offer to those living with life-limiting or terminal illnesses. To mark this re-launch, we are holding an Open Day, which will take

place between 10.00am to 3.00pm on Thursday 9th August. This will offer you a chance to come and take those first few steps through the door, and really explore the options that are out there once you, or someone you love, have been diagnosed with a life-limiting or terminal illness. We will be giving you the chance try a taster session of complementary therapies such as reiki, and our clinical staff will be on hand to host an informative, but accessible Q and A. We would love to see as many of you there as possible, and we hope this offers you a chance to answer any of those questions you might have. If you would like any further information, please contact ella. beale@stbarnabashospice.co.uk.

Pedal Car Grand Prix is one of the Rotary’s major charity events of the year, on Sunday 12th August. It consists of teams of five persons racing around a track according to Grand Prix rules (loosely) and prizes are given for the team producing the fastest lap and for the best dressed team. All teams are encouraged to come in fancy dress to add to the fun of the competition. The racing is taken quite seriously by the teams in order to be the overall winners. Teams made from up of men

Finally, we are looking for leaflet distributors for Gainsborough and the surrounding areas. This would mostly just be a service required when we have upcoming events. There will also be sideshows of vintage cars, tractors, The Studio dancers, as well as the various charity stalls selling their wares. This is a community event for Beckingham and local villages, so it is hoped that as many people as possible will support it. It is always a very sociable occasion and there will be various stalls at the event including a plant stall. If anyone wishes to hold a stall at the event, please contact Pat Hooton. What’s on at Town Hall Live Town Hall Live brings the best

in folk, roots and Americana from America, Canada and the UK to Kirton and they have a busy programme lined up for August and September. On Saturday 4th August, Eillen Jewell and her band, from Boise, Idaho will headline. This is a real coup for the venue as it is one of only five concerts she will play in the UK. On Friday 24th August, Nashville duo Robby Hecht and Caroline Spence take to the stage, with support from local favourite Rhiannon Scutt. Earlier this year Robby and Caroline released their debut album ‘Two People’ which is packed with elegant harmonies and effortlessly human songs that cut to the point and features the duo’s perfectly paired voices. Robby’s lyrics are mesmerising, they are gentle yet strong, beautiful but soul provoking. Caroline has a beautiful voice and last year released her latest solo album ‘Spades and Roses’. Together,

their voices combine perfectly, to produce perfect harmonies that give the listener goose bumps. Then, in September there are two concerts. On Friday 7th, top UK folk rock duo Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar headline. Live, they bounce off each other with entertaining tales of life on the road and their camaraderie and playing is infectious. One week later, on Saturday 15th, we welcome back Amanda Anne Platt and The Honeycutters from Asheville, North Carolina. Last year they played one of the year’s best concerts to a sold-out audience. Advance tickets are on sale now, from the One Stop store in the town, from Brian on 01652 649230 or from www.wegottickets.com. The Eilen Jewell tickets are priced at £14.00, the Hecht/Spence and Russell/Algar at £12.50 and The Honeycutters are £13.50. Each concert will offer great entertainment from top musicians.

The Blues Club, Gainsborough After a short summer break,

The Blues Club, Gainsborough will be back to trying to raise money for local charities, but at the same time have a great time. Starting with Just For Kicks and disco and on the 22nd September, again great value at only £3.00 a ticket or pay on the door. On the 27th October, the amazing Union Gap are doing two spots, which is very rare these days. This event will be admission by ticket only, but please hurry because they are going fast.

We have Giant Hogweed with the return of Motown Mickey, plus disco, tickets are only £5.00. Watch this space, because we also have one or two charity events lined up for 2019 — and an early heads up — look out for are Valentine’s night on 16th February 2019. To call for further information or for tickets, call Baz on 07931 762159, Steve on 07759 945194, John on 07508 320243 or Hank on 07931 714069. All ‘the boys’ want to say a huge thank you for everyone who shows their support.

Gainsborough & District Flower Club We meet on the fourth Thursday of every month, at the Blues Club, North Street, Gainsborough DN21 2HU, start time 7.15pm. The next meeting will be on 23rd August, when Jean Fordham will present ‘Fascinating Hats’. We are affiliated to NAFAS, but you don’t have to be a flower arranger to join us.

We enjoy flower demonstrations by national demonstrators, workshops, social events and trips out. Please see our club night details for August. If you would like to join us, do come along as a visitor to one of our club nights for a small fee of £5.00. Contact gdfc. sec@hotmail.co.uk or 01427 788868.

Misterton war memories

David seymour takes a look at life in Misterton and West Stockwith before the Great War The beginning of the 20th century, largely coinciding with the Edwardian Period between 1901 and 1910, marked the most prosperous and creative time in the history of Misterton and West Stockwith. There was a housing boom, new public buildings, Misterton’s first ‘supermarket’, the Co-operative opened in 1904, lots of other local shops and businesses, full employment in agriculture, local brickworks, canal and river trade and developing local industries like Morris’ Chemical Works, Newell’s Engineering Works and Aldam’s Brass and Iron Foundry. Morris’ Works, on the west bank of the River Trent between Misterton and West Stockwith, employed over 300 men locally and three women, two sisters as typists and one office cleaner! Miss Emilie Longstaff of West Stockwith was employed by Newell’s as its European Manager, speaking both French and German on the telephone 34 August 2018

(Newell’s telephone number was Misterton 11!) to customers across Europe. She travelled to work daily on her motor cycle. Thomas Spencer was building cars in Misterton; the area had a national reputation for celery production, and the three local industries all had an international clientele. Traditional life continued with people trying to live their lives as they had for years. Laurie Lee in Cider With Rosie, commented on how the rhythm of life continued as it had for generations: The horse was king, and almost everything grew around him: fodder, smithies, stables, paddocks, distances and the rhythm of our days. His eight miles an hour was the limit of our movements, as it had been since the days of the Romans. That eight miles an hour was life and death, the size of our world, our prison…Then, to the scream of the horse, the change began. The brasslamped motor car came coughing up the road. Soon the village would

break, dissolve and scatter, become no more than a place for pensioners. A period of peace and prosperity seemed to herald in the 20th century. The rhythm of life was still dominated by the farming and religious calendar, not an idyllic life by any stretch of the imagination (illness and death were never far away and daily life, by modern standards, was very hard) but it was a lifestyle that was secure, known, certain. And yet just 20 years later, the promise seemed broken. Local scandals and disasters, the First World War and unemployment and economic depression all contributed to a change in the early optimism of the 20th century, a change reflected in local village society. Feelings of progress and prosperity that marked the end of the Victorian era in the local communities were replaced by a pessimism and economic depression that seemed to grip the whole country and most of the Western World by the 1930s. The Edwardian Period seemed to mark a watershed between the old rural way of life, where the communities were largely self-sufficient, confident and thriving to a more modern lifestyle where international events, new technologies and national legislation seemed to impact more and more into the lives of people in Misterton and West Stockwith. At the start of the 20th century, Britain was still ►

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GAINSBOROUGH LIFE!

◄ a horse-drawn society. It has been estimated that there were about three and a quarter million horses at work in Britain in 1901. About half of these were used on farms, but over a million were used commercially, to pull goods traffic, buses and trams or hackney carriages for hire. More goods were delivered by horse — an estimated 671 million tons — than by rail. But the Great War also marked a watershed in the use of horses in British life. Of the million horses sent overseas to help with the war effort, only 62,000 returned home. This is a forgotten tragedy of the Great War — a conflict that pitched as many animals into the line of fire as it did humans. The sheer scale of the logistical operation to ferry the horses to France and then keep them fed and watered is unimaginable today. A nation which had depended on horsepower in farms and cities up until 1914 lost many of its workhorses to the front and had to find mechanised alternatives. By 1918, there was no

Misterton war memories going back. Companies like Marshalls of Gainsborough benefitted from this sea change in British rural life,

producing a range of steam-powered agricultural machinery, including tractors and threshing machines.

The four books, all published this year after several years of research are: • Suns of Home — Misterton and West Stockwith before the First World War • If I Should Die — the opening months of the war which saw the first local casualties • A Foreign Field — cataloguing local people in some of the major battles of the war • Hearts At Peace — looking at the Home Front, other local combatants, the end of the war and remembering the fallen. All the books are in A4 format, some 200 pages long and priced at £12.00 each. The first three books in the series are available

from David Seymour in Misterton, contact seymoursam@hotmail.com or 07952 544604 for more details. The initial idea for one book came from the Misterton War Memorial outside All Saints Church in the village. On the memorial are the names of 23 local people who were killed in the First World War, including, unusually, one woman, Nurse Kitty Jollands. David wanted to tell their stories as a lasting tribute and memorial to their sacrifice. As the research developed, the idea also developed into not one but four books with the titles inspired by Rupert Brooke’s poem, The Soldier.

Gringley on the Hill WI

President, Lynn Bowes, welcomed members and some of their husbands to the meeting on a very warm summer’s evening. After a short business element, she introduced the speaker, Claire Monk, brewer from Welbeck Abbey Brewery. (This explains why the husbands had joined us for the evening)! Claire is the General Manager of this micro-brewery based in a listed barn at the Welbeck Estate in Sherwood Forest. She began her talk, explaining how she became a brewer, producing handcrafted ales using the estate’s own spring water and unique strain of nurtured yeast. It soon became a practical session

where we tasted and learned the history of four beers. The names of the beers are linked to the Cavendish family whose lineage spans the 1300s to the current family at Welbeck, i.e Cavendish Blonde, Henrietta Golden, Red Feather and Portland Black. The evening was a very social evening which ended with the opportunity to purchase these beers and members’ husbands were quick to form a queue! The next meeting, on 1st August, will be a fun evening of Kurling and other games. Visitors will be warmly welcomed to join us at the Gringley Community Centre at 7.30pm.

Creating the room of your dreams During my lifetime, room designs

have changed and continue to change. In days gone we grew up with sculleries, living rooms that children were not allowed in, dining rooms if you were lucky, bedrooms in which you only slept in and hung your clothes and bathrooms that had the corner bath in aubergine. Today we now focus on kitchen/diners where we socialise and watch the big TV. We have modern appliances with split level cookers and separate hobs and the bathroom is now a place to relax with modern free-standing baths and walk-in showers designed to your choice. And what about the designer bedroom, with floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall wardrobes, together with many space saving additions. Most bedrooms now have TVs on the wall, which lets you retire early or if you are lucky, stay in bed. Looking towards the future, we also have ‘tomorrow’s rooms’ which incorporate new technology. We already

David Carney, from Cre8, on how he & his team can turn your dreams into reality have the bath you can run on the way home from work with your smart phone, or again check with your smart phone whilst shopping, what you have in the fridge. There are many more gadgets available, with more being introduced. At Cre8, we are ahead of the curve. We can give you today’s rooms, with tomorrow’s luxuries and technology. Our beautifully designed Chippendale kitchens can come complete with new state of the art Samsung appliances, together with Quooker instant boiling water taps. We can give you luxurious designed bathrooms, together with state of the art smart tap appliances. Our Crown bedrooms give you fitted wardrobes in many choice of colours

BENCHMARK Brickwork and Masonry

• Heritage brickwork restoration. • Lime repointing • Stonemasonry repairs • New builds/extensions • Walling • Conservation advice • All aspects of brickwork covered

All Brickwork and Masonry Repairs are undertaken with a sympathetic and professional approach

with space saving shelves and hangers. The Cre8 team can give you all of this. Our brand-new showroom opened only a few weeks ago on Bob Rainsforth Way, Gainsborough and we are open seven days a week. We would love to meet you and together with our state of the art design software and many years of experience, help you to design the room you have always wanted. Our team will organise work with you from concept to completion on your dream project, taking all the stress away. Please call in and meet our team and hopefully help you with not only the rooms of today but the rooms of tomorrow.

You can enter if you live within five miles of the Market Place where the Show is held in the Town Hall or if you are a member of the club. It is open to the public to view the exhibits from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. If you have any queries about entering or need further information, then please contact Martin Hollingsworth (Chair) on 01652 648435, or m.hollingsworth205@ btinternet.com or through Facebook — KLAGs (Kirton in Lindsey Amateur Gardeners).

Retford & District Photographic Society members enjoy a summer break, which gives them time to get out and about with their cameras and collect more images to bring to the competitions at the club in the new season. This year there is an extra focus for their attention in a new competition for images of any subject taken between May and August. These are to be posted by 31st August on the club Flickr site for everyone to see. Members attending on the first night will be 44 August 2018

focussing on beautiful rescue Lurchers and Greyhounds. They are independent thinkers, intelligent and highly trainable, and they love a puzzle, such as where have you hidden the biscuits. Keeping Lurchers and Greyhounds in tip top condition takes a lot less effort than you would think. Calm and affectionate, they make a super family pet and are intensely loyal. They have a keen instinct for exercise, they are speedy but only use it in short bursts where they use up usually all of their energy in one sprint and then promptly retire to a comfy bed. They are gentle and affectionate but love a good tug o’ war

#CelebrateGainsborough or to chew a toy in between naps. They sleep in really weird positions — usually on their back in a sunny spot on the floor, or your couch, with their head twisted awkwardly and their legs contorted. You get accustomed to it, but at first it can be quite startling; yes they are comfortable. They are also adorable! From their bright glossy eyes, their pricked up ears, and their big goofy noses to their long, swishy waggy tails, Lurchers and Greyhounds are hard not to fall head over heels in love with once you get to know them. Come and see our beautiful boys and girls, they are waiting just for you. The RSPCA Animal Centre on the Great North Road, near Bawtry DN10 6DE, is open six days a week from 11.00am to 4.00pm (closed Wednesdays). Also visit www. rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk for the latest news and more information on how you can help support our animal welfare operations.

Kirton in Lindsey Amateur Gardeners The KLAGs 2018 season of meetings continues on Wednesday 15th August at 7.30pm, in the Town Hall, Market Place, Kirton in Lindsey. The talk and presentation this time will be intriguingly titled ‘My Cutting Bed’ and will be given by Sandra Bright. Sandra is a keen gardener, and appeared in the final of the BBC’s Allotment Challenge in 2015. She comes from Wooton, in North Lincs. At each meeting monthly

competitions are held for members, this month it will be ‘Three tomatoes’. Future subjects include: Soils and their importance; Delightful Daisies and Fruit Trees. Please come along and join us we are a friendly bunch. Follow us on Facebook at KLAGs (Kirton in Lindsey Amateur Gardeners) and for further information, please call Martin Hollingsworth, Chairman on 01652 648435.

Looking forward to the new season able to vote for their favourite image. September is the time for current members to re-join for the new season ahead and the best time for anyone who has been thinking about coming along to do so. You can visit three times before committing to joining. The first meeting will be social with an introduction to the new season’s programme, which gets underway with speakers on ‘The Wider World of Photography’

and ‘Astro Photography’ in the following two weeks. There is a warm welcome awaiting anyone coming to join us at any of our meetings which take place at 7.30pm every Monday evening from 3rd September until May 2019, at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road, Retford on Monday. Just come along or contact us via www.retford-photographic. co.uk and we will look out for you.

MG TF Readily available and well-priced, most MG TF’s come with a peppy 1.8-litre engine and all have a folding cloth roof. It’s still a relatively handsome looking car that seems to have aged well, and we found a number for well under our £2,000 budget.

With summer in full swing, now might just be the time to nab yourself a drop-top car. Thankfully, you don’t need to spend a packet in order to get that wind-in-your-hair experience, so we’ve picked out some of the best convertibles for under £2,000. TOYOTA MR2 (ABOVE) For no-frills, involving motoring, the little MR2 provides exciting performance from a 1.8-litre engine, and its compact size makes it feel nimble on the road. The lack of any real boot does make it impractical but there are plenty of reasonable examples available within budget.

AUDI TT ROADSTER There aren’t many about in this price range, but the Audi TT Roadster is a fine option. Strong build quality, reliable engines and quirky styling mean that this softtop still looks and feels fresh today. At this price you’ll be looking at a high-mileage example, but providing it’s got a decent service history there’s no reason why these can’t be hassle-free convertibles. 46 August 2018

MINI CONVERTIBLE The ‘new’ Mini has proved to be immensely popular, and the convertible version was snapped up as a result of its cutesy styling and reasonably powerful range of engines. Available well within our £2,000 budget, make sure that the interior is straight, and listen for strange noises from the costly-toreplace power steering pump.

MERCEDES SLK Buying a used Mercedes can mean higher repair costs and pricier parts, so choose carefully — a decent servicing history is essential. An early 2000s SLK should be well-equipped, with electronicallyadjustable seats and cruise control.

SAAB 9-3 The 9-3 convertible is a comfortable and spacious droptop, and there are plenty of spare parts and components available should you need replacements, despite Saab’s now defunct status.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GAINSBOROUGH LIFE!

A sting in the tail Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) is used by

thousands of drivers to finance a car purchase, as it offers flexibility and affordability. PCP is a loan but, unlike a traditional loan, you won’t own the car at the term end (unless you choose to). This has the advantage of lower monthly payments. Determined by the dealer, the car will have a Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV) at the PCP term end. When the time comes,

should the car be valued at a figure higher than this, then you will have the difference between the two figures to put down as a deposit on your next car. Sounds good. Low payments and a deposit at the end. But be aware of the PCP terms, otherwise you may get stung. Adverts not only show the fun and affordability of owning a new car, they also show the small-print — notably the annual mileage clause. To get the GMFV figure up, and thus

the monthly payments down, the dealer wants a low mileage car at term end. A figure of 6,000 annual miles — that’s 120 miles per week — is common, which is my weekly commute. Any other driving will take you over that annual figure and the excess charge could be 8p/mile. A mid-20s driver I know signed up for a three-year PCP with such a term. He reached the 18,000 limit in 15 months and the finance company have told him to put away at least £120 per month to cover the excess mileage fee he will incur. PCP is viable way to finance a car but, like any contract, read the small print!

Gainsborough’s Favourite Volunteer Award For National Volunteers Week,

in our June edition, we asked for you to put forward your nominees for Gainsborough’s Favourite Volunteer. We were inundated with nominations — and one of our nominees received more nominations than anyone else and was the clear choice for our favourite volunteer. Andrew Birkitt, along with his wife Lynn, have volunteered for Gainsborough and District Heritage Centre for many years and as a thank you for their dedication, we teamed up with Jill at Fabulous Flowers to say a special thank you and deliver a thank you bouquet. Andrew’s story is below, along with a selection of some of the other deserving nominees’ stories. GAINSBOROUGH’S FAVOURITE VOLUNTEERS Andrew and Lynne Birkitt “Lynne and Andy work constantly to improve and provide a fascinating glimpse into the history of Gainsborough as a manufacturing hub, its links with aviation history and what it was like to live and work locally in bygone times.” “Working with a whole team of volunteers who also deserve a nomination, they have inspired my sons to start volunteering themselves.” “Andrew is the current Chairman of the Gainsborough Heritage Association and has a passion for Gainsborough and it’s long and varied history. He works tirelessly for the Heritage Association in promoting Gainsborough both past and present. He puts hours of work into research and then displays this work for visitors to the Heritage Centre to see. He also compiles a members’ newsletter full of articles about old Gainsborough. His knowledge of Gainsborough’s history is phenomenal. Visitors to the Heritage Centre can be assured that Andrew will be able to answer all of their questions about our town.” “Andrew also runs a Facebook 54 August 2018

page called ’Gainsborough Past and Present’, a page which is viewed by a Worldwide membership many of whom are ex-Gainsbronians, for whom the site provides a link with their past. “The work that Andrew puts in for the Centre is one of the reasons that The Heritage Centre gets such good reviews on Trip Advisor.” “He has worked so hard since 1993 to create a Heritage Centre in Gainsborough and now we have an amazing Centre, thanks to his determination and patience along with the work of many volunteers.” “Andrew was one of the founding members of the association, 25 years ago. This is his third year as chairman and he works tirelessly to promote, preserve and protect the heritage of Gainsborough. His knowledge on the history of our town is vast, and he is always willing to share this knowledge with others. I believe he deserves public recognition for his commitment to this town.” Marcus Hammond “Marcus has been the lead volunteer at Gainsborough’s X-church project for nearly 12 years. His main role is leading the youth club which happens

Nominated by gainsborough Life readers Supported by:

01427 891769 or 07977 898960 jillsfabflowers@btinternet.com www.jillsfabflowers.co.uk every Thursday night. There are three sessions for kiddies aged five to nine years and 10 to 16 years and older teens and young adults. The youth project is entirely voluntary and has anything up to 50 kids. Over the years hundreds have gone through the scheme. The kiddies have a cooked supper courtesy of donated food from the supermarkets, and small amounts of grant money provide play and music equipment. It’s amazing how Marcus and the other volunteers keep going week after week, often in difficult circumstances.” Jenny Stevenson “I would like to nominate Jenny Stevenson for recognition of being a brilliant volunteer. She has volunteered with Girlguiding almost thirty years, and also helped with Scouts. She is a very willing person and will help out others when in need. She also has an extremely busy life, yet still but finds time to fit her voluntary work in too. She always gives her best and we are so proud to have her in Girlguiding.” Colin Stubley “I can think of no better person to nominate for an award than Colin ►

◄ Stubley, he is Chairman of John Coupland Charities Committee, and is doing a great job, steering a difficult path on occasions. He also spends every spare minute getting and keeping the gardens up to a high standard. We cannot praise him more for the job he is doing whilst never neglecting his home and family.” St Barnabas Hospice Volunteers “I would like to nominate the volunteers that work tirelessly to support the care and support needed for those living with life-limiting or terminal illnesses throughout our local community. Whether it be volunteering their help in our Day Therapy days, enabling us to run a weekly Coffee Morning, or helping at our everpopular Fundraising events; they do it all with a smile! The ladies not only donate their time to support those who are currently accessing our services, but the expansion and continuation of our future care is always in the forefront of their minds also. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, and remind you that we simply couldn’t do it without you.”

Gainsborough’s Favourite Volunteer Award Ken Knowland “Ken is extremely passionate about helping individuals with hearing loss and impairment, by assisting with hearing aid tubes, batteries and general duties to promote good information and advice surrounding hearing aids and health. A few weeks after he had been to see us we came across a coordinator from Action for Hearing Loss at one of our Voluntary Sector Forums here in Gainsborough. My colleague suggested she meet Ken and since then he has been volunteering for the charity, has undergone some training to further develop his skills and he is helping people again in his community. He has travelled further afield throughout the county and all alongside supporting his wife who has some health conditions whilst also being a dedicated Grandfather. He absolutely loves his role and frequently comes in to the centre to remind us, so much so he has had a certificate and recognition from the charity for his efforts.

Julia always has a smile on her face and is great company – her jokes are hilarious! Through all of her challenges, Julia has shown huge courage, resilience and strength. Julia is a fantastic human being and deserves a bouquet of flowers (every day!). THANK YOU Thank you from Gainsborough Life to everyone who took the time to nominate their favourite volunteers. We are all grateful to the 100s of local volunteers who give up their time each week to make our town and the lives of those who live in it a better place. Lethal leatherjackets… Daddy-longlegs or craneflies are starting to hatch out

now as adults, but it is their young — known as leatherjackets — that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in the last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. Leatherjackets feed on grass roots (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are tasty snacks for animals such as crows, rooks, magpies, badgers or foxes. So if there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals will search them out, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be quickly devastated. 58 August 2018

Pippa greenwood gets the better of the little up-starts WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CHECK IF YOU HAVE THEM? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches thoroughly and do the same with a ripped-up patch. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners or an opened-out plastic compost bag will work well. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. SO HOW DO YOU KNOW LEATHERJACKETS ARE TO BLAME? Leatherjackets are greyishbrown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all.

To remove more, repeat this black polythene trick and deposit the pests on the bird table as free and nutritious bird food. For a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution, use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply — I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddy-longlegs and when soil conditions are right — usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat — and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available, suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover, but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GAINSBOROUGH LIFE!

#CelebrateGainsborough

Give me your answer do… Rachel Leverton on a hardy, little over-looked flower There are some flowers I love because they are show-stoppers, others because of their evocative scent, and some because they are unusual. Michaelmas daisies don’t tick any of those boxes, but I love them anyway. They are bright, cheerful, and completely undemanding — at home in the poorest, driest soils, and bees and butterflies love them! They get their common name from their flowering period, which peaks at Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael on September 5th, though they will carry on flowering well into late autumn. This means they are great for injecting colour into borders which can start to look a little washedout and dreary in late summer. Until the mid-nineties, Michaelmas daisies were all known scientifically as asters, but then some were reclassified. Look out for the name 62 August 2018

Symphyotrichum, as many popular varieties now carry that name instead The gardener credited with popularising the Michaelmas daisy was Ernest Ballard. Many of the varieties he cultivated are still available and bear the names of his family members. “Ada Ballard” is named for his sister and is lavender blue, “Marie Ballard” is a pretty pale blue double bloom named for his wife. He is also responsible for “Prosperity” and “Peace”, rose-pink and deep mauve respectively, which he named straight after the First World War. If you want a tallish variety suitable for the middle of the border, try “Little Carlow” which grows to about 90cm and produces masses of violet-blue blooms. One of my favourites for the back of the border is “Calliope” which has striking black elegant stems that reach heights of 2m,

smothered in delicate lilac flowers. A good small variety is “Beggarten” which is pale blue, compact and clump-forming. “Tonga” is also smaller and is a lovely deep purple which looks great in a container. Although they are not highmaintenance plants Michaelmas daisies benefit from being cut down to ground level in late autumn and covered in a good mulch of well-rotted organic matter. And that’s all there is to it!

Trent Valley Mini Connecting people for wellbeing For the last 10 years Voluntary individuals can all refer to the & Classic Day Centre Services has worked alongside service, where we talk to individuals the Gainsborough and West Lindsey communities, to support development of new community organisations, signpost volunteers, deliver training, draw vital grant funding into the district and champion the voice of the voluntary sector. In that time, we have spoken to well over 500 individuals per year who offer their time to local groups and organisations that need time and energy from these essential volunteers. Over the last 10 years we have also seen a number of people who simply need some more support around them in the community. This could be because they are lonely, need mental health support, have young families, or are simply new to the area and don’t really know what’s out there. That’s why, in 2017, Voluntary Centre Services launched a new service, in partnership with local health and social care providers, to connect you better with your community. The Connecting People for Wellbeing service, has been established within the existing Volunteer Centre at the Guildhall and we are offering an impartial conversation, with any individual who would like to connect with their community, or who would benefit from accessing local activities. This type of service, sometimes described as ‘Social Prescribing’, has proven benefits, including reducing the need for some individuals to access clinical support services. Professionals, relatives and

The Trent Valley Mini Owners Club held their annual Mini and Classic Day on 15th June. It was a delightful day, when fun was combined with raising funds for local charities. At the event, cheques to the sum of £500 each were presented to both Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance and LIVES — funds all raised by club members and their friends and families. Prizes were also awarded for the Best Mini, Best Classic C and Best in Show, and were presented by Dawn Barron of Barron Bou, who also judged the cars. The entertainment for the day was from SteelGen steel band. For further information about the club, contact Mike James, TVMOC Press Officer, on 07889 443920. Mon - Fri 9.00am - 5.30pm

to identify what will make a difference to their lives. Referrals could include everything from arts groups and lunch clubs, to activities that involve physical exercise, such as gardening and dance. The service is open to anyone over the age of 18. Some individuals may even wish to access volunteering advice, which remains available. In addition to offering services at the Guildhall, individuals are also welcome at our regular ‘community surgery’ sessions at John Coupland Hospital. Every Tuesday our advisors will be available for a drop-in session at Morton Suite, from 10.00am to 12.00pm. On the last Wednesday of the month we host a free community café at the venue, also from 10.00am to 12.00pm, and residents are welcome to pop in, regardless of whether they are using the hospital. VCS is always looking for new community groups and organisations that are looking for more participants for their activities and need support to develop their projects. We’d love to find out more about what you do and how we can work together for our communities. If you’d like to find out more about our Connecting People for Wellbeing project, or would like advice about volunteering, pop in to the Guildhall, Marshall’s Yard, Gainsborough DN21 2NA, call 01427 613470 or email westlindsey@voluntarycentreservices. org.uk or visit our website at www. voluntarycentreservices.org.uk.

Bringing a pet into your family Pets can bring a lot of fun, laughter

and comfort to a child’s life. Elizabeth Kilbey, from Channel 4’s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, says: “Research from BMC Psychiatry has revealed that interacting or simply being in the presence of animals has a soothing effect on children, reducing their heart rate and skin temperature. Spending time with furry friends, and stroking, cuddling and caring for them, can release comforting endorphins.” All animals need care and attention, but some require more than others. Birds, for instance, need to have their cages cleaned out once a week and their food and water changed daily. Dogs need at least one walk a day (often more) and most don’t like to be left alone for more than four hours at a time. The age of your children will play a

big part in choosing the right pet for your family. A big, boisterous puppy could easily knock a toddler over, for example, and won’t take kindly to having its tail pulled, and some breeds of hamster are too small and fast for young children to handle. You’ll need to factor in the cost of food, any regular medications, pet insurance, potential vet’s bills and accessories such as cat litter and toys. Depending on your circumstances and the type of animal you choose, there may also be other costs involved, such as paid dog-walking services or cattery costs. Once you’ve decided what type of animal you want, you’ll need to find the pet that’s right for you. Rescue centres are a good first port of call, as they should be able to tell you what age group a pet can live with,

whether it’s house-trained, how long it can be left alone for, and so on. If you’re planning to buy a puppy, it’s sensible to choose a breeder that’s registered with the Kennel Club, as they have to adhere to strict ethical and health criteria. Less reputable breeders don’t always provide the level of healthcare they should, which means you could end up with large vet’s bills in the future. If you’re not able to care for a pet full-time, you could look at ‘borrowing’ one for walks and play. It’s worth asking around to see if any of your neighbours need some extra help. Or check out The Cinnamon Trust (www.cinnamon. org.uk), which puts volunteer dog walkers in touch with pet owners who need support. There’s also Borrow My Doggy (www.borrowmydoggy. com), which connects dog walkers and pet sitters with pet owners. Lots of animal rescues also need people to foster pets long or short term. Gainsborough Memorial & Model Railway dedication service The Gainsborough Model

in East Stockwith

Railway Society is open on Bank Holiday Weekend on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August, from 1.30pm to 5.30pm and on Monday 27th August, from 10.30am to 5.30pm. Admission is £4.00 for adults and £4.00 for senior citizens. Entry for children is £3.00 and a family ticket (two adults and two children) costs £10.00. Visitors will be delighted with the large 0 Gauge Model Railway modelled on the East Coast Main Line from Kings Cross to Leeds Central in the days of steam. The model railway works to a time table with bells and signals as the real railway. Come and see our models of Flying Scotsman, Mallard and many more. The model railway has been hand built by members over the last 70 plus years and is a great family day out.

The village of East Stockwith held

a memorial and dedication service on Sunday 10th June, to dedicate a new war memorial monument to the seven crewmen of Lancaster ME323-PH-P, which crashed into the fields at East Stockwith in the early hours of the morning 5th March 1945, killing all seven crewmen. The Lancaster was shot down on a training flight after exchanging fire with a Junkers 88. The memorial has been constructed incorporating one of the propeller blades from the stricken Lancaster, which was unearthed by local farmers Barratts, who gifted the blade to the village. The parish council then became involved, resulting in the new memorial and dedication service. The service was attended by up to 200 local residents and friends and was followed by a buffet in a marquee a short

walk from the memorial. The service was conducted by Reverend Briscoe. The airmen who lost their lives were: Pilot officer Arthur Glyndwyr Thomas, Flight Sergeant Thomas Caffray, Flight Sergeant Ronald Leslie Horstman, Flight Sergeant Walter Noble Pridmore, Flight Sergeant George Edward Davis, Flight Sergeant Alan Cryer and Flight Sergeant Alexander Harold Weston A small booklet outlining the event, place of birth and burial was given out to all those who attended.

Beating the summer blues

card specifically for holidays (don’t use it the rest of the time — lock it in a drawer!) That way you’ve got access to funds if there’s a problem. KEEPING THE KIDS CALM Keeping the kids occupied if you’re delayed can be stressful. Take some disposable items like colouring books to keep them occupied so you’re not weighed down before you board.

Ah, the summer holidays. With

the weather getting hotter (and the kids stuck at home), many of us will be packing our bags and jumping on a plane to get away from it all. Flight delays are by far the most complained-about travel trauma — and Resolver helped over 120,000 people reclaim their money for free last year. Delays can be caused by lots of problems — anything from sudden snowstorms, foggy mornings or even the occasional active volcano. But if you’re raring to go on holiday — or you’re ready to go home — flight delays are certainly frustrating. You can’t pre-empt a flight delay unfortunately, but you can stack the odds in your favour. Make sure that you book a flight that leaves earlier in the day, for example. The fast turnaround time of the budget airlines means if there’s a delay at any of their stops during the delay, it will carry over until later. Nighttime flights may be cheaper, but you may find you’re waiting around longer — and missing your transport connections when you get home. But what else can you do to avoid a travel trauma? Here’s a few tips: 74 August 2018

GET INSURED A surprisingly substantial number of people travel without insurance. From missing baggage to delayed flights, it’s cover you can’t afford to travel without. Make sure you start the policy now, not just before you travel. That way you can avoid getting caught out with cancellation costs.

GET THE DETAILS OF THE PROBLEM If your flight is delayed, stay calm. Ask for written confirmation of the delay and what you’re entitled to if things don’t improve (like food vouchers, for example). Keep the documents should you need to claim. You can use Resolver’s free website to claim for delays and cancellations for up to six years ago!

PLANNING AHEAD Make sure you’ve got some flexibility built in with your booking with your hotel too. Call ahead and confirm and write down the contact details. Make sure you’ve checked out the cancellation policy before you book — and book direct with the hotel if you can. Cancellation can sometimes be a little more complicated if you’ve booked through a third party.

HIRING A RENTAL CAR If you’re planning on getting a rental car abroad, make sure you take an inventory of everything that’s wrong with the car when you get it. We hear too many stories of people being caught out by charges for damage that was already on the car! Always get the rental people to sign off anything you spot that might be wrong — even if they tell you it isn’t necessary.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED So, you look at the baggage carousel desperately, but your luggage is missing. What next? Well your insurer should be able to help with an emergency payment but avoid the holiday being ruined by having emergency cash. Take a credit

OTHER DISASTERS It’s a good idea to snap a few pics of your passport and travel documents and save them under a well-hidden file on your phone or online? Don’t save your pin numbers though! If you lose your stuff, you can always get hold of people who could help you.

David Coldrick on practical steps for a safe return home Nobody likes to stay in hospital for

longer than necessary. Older people often deteriorate in hospital, especially if they are frail or have dementia. Stays of more than 10 days can lead to the equivalent of 10 years’ muscle ageing (NHS England 13th June 2018). The NHS and local authorities, want to reduce longer stays this year by a quarter. That will free up 4,000 beds in time for winter. Some 350,000 people spend over three weeks in hospital — 20% of all beds or ‘36 hospitals worth’. Medical reasons dictate many stays in hospital. Other people simply need extra support to return home safely which may not always be available. If you can help what practical steps can you take? HAVE A SAFE DISCHARGE PLAN A person is entitled to a proper safe discharge plan. Discuss this with your family member and the discharge co-ordination team. Get contact details for e.g. district nurses and therapists. It is easy to feel rushed. But there is a big difference between achieving a safe discharge and blocking a bed which someone else needs. Premature discharges increase the risk of a ‘revolving door’ discharge — out of hospital one day, back the next day. CONTACT CARE PROVIDERS Make contact with any care providers in good time so they can arrange support and revise/establish an agreed care plan in advance of discharge e.g. a person might be in receipt of companionship or home help before a fall but now needs some form of personal care e.g. help with bathing, dressing or getting upstairs. That involves a sound assessment of the person’s needs and wishes with a suitable risk assessment of their property. Planning ahead reduces risks and helps support successful discharges. ARRANGE SUITABLE TRANSPORT HOME A specialist taxi or ambulance

Helping loved ones return from hospital may be needed. Some cars are not designed for more difficult entry and exit. Don’t assume that what was okay will still be okay. PREPARE A SAFE HOME Ensure walkways around the home are well lit and free of clutter. Check and install safety devices such as grab rails in bathrooms and on stairs. • Stock up the fridge. There may be spoiled or out of date food to replace and essentials to replenish. It’s easy to forget and not all discharges are when shops are open! • Change the bed linen. • Restock personal hygiene products. • Ensure the heating and water is set and working properly. • Confirm exactly what medication is needed and when. Don’t leave the hospital without suitable details/ the full prescription. Take note of any special dietary instructions.

• Make a note of medical appointments. Encourage loved ones to follow GP advice. We may not like it but we like going into hospital far less. • Help the older person get back into daily routines. That helps maintain body strength and supports good mood and motivation. • Observe. Is there evidence of non-recovery, a fall at night, difficulty with medication or food and drink? Call the GP.
