Owner managed companies hit by dividends tax change! In a surprise move in the summer budget, the taxation of dividends (not ISA’s) was changed. If you are the owner of a limited company who has been taking a low tax efficient salary and paying yourself dividends to top this up, you could be at least £1,700 worse off. From 6 April 2016, the first £5,000 of dividends will be tax free, after this tax will be paid at 7.5% up to the basic rate threshold, 32.5% and 38.1% (currently 0%, 25% and circa 30%), depending on total taxable income, a dramatic increase. What can you do? Before the change maximise the dividends you take to benefit from the lower current rates of tax. Call Stuart McDonagh of SYKAM & Co on 07791 718861 for more information and a free consultation or contact your regular accountant.

Park Life Interview with James Lang Partner at Corum Estate Agency James Lang is Corum Bearsden’s local partner. He has been working within estate agency for over twenty years in both the corporate and private sector. James has extensive knowledge of the local area and the variety of properties within, having spent much of his childhood living in Mugdock before moving to the village of Strathblane.

How did you get involved in Estate Agency? Growing up, my mother had a great talent for buying properties and moved every few years after making improvements. During this time I met lots of estate agents and the nice suits and cars definitely drew me initially to the industry. At that time, I didn’t appreciate the complexity and the long hours involved in selling houses.

What do you love most about your job? I love having the privilege of being invited in to clients homes and helping them through the process of buying and selling. Since becoming a partner within the business, my

responsibilities have grown even further. I love the challenges that running your own business throws at you, most importantly, every day is different!

within ‘‘Park Life’s’’ catchment area over the last twelve months to clients who recognise the excellent value for money and great schooling the villages have to offer.

Do you have any top tips when selling your home?

What would be your dream property?

Yes. Employ Corum, we will guide you through the process from start to finish and give you plenty of help and advice of how best to present your home to achieve the best price. We are delighted to do viewings for you or give you guidance on how to conduct a viewing as this is one of the most crucial parts of selling a home.

After recently becoming a dad, my dream property has changed shape and size. I was brought up in the country and would love a detached house with half an acre plus of garden bordering onto farmland with views of Dumgoyne. Building a house would be my ultimate dream.

What are your predictions for the property market in 2016? The rural market place in our view is set to shine in 2016. The suburban markets have now recovered to precrash pricing and are set to increase further in value. We have sold a substantial number of homes

1 Get rid of all the excess stuff that has accumulated in every nook and cranny. Put it in storage or give it to a friend 2 People need to be able to envisage what the property would look like if they were living there. People often find this difficult, so make it easy for them to see all the fantastic living space you’re offering them 3 Don’t make it look like a generic hotel; leave some personality. Apart from anything else it gives unimaginative buyers suggestions as to what they might do. People are often buying into a lifestyle as much as a property. Show them the attractive side of your lifestyle 4 Consider removing any bulky furniture that makes the room feel small and replacing it with smaller furniture

How to prevent birds living in your Chimney

Park Life | Property Feature

by Dawn, at Tartan Stoves. If you have a birds nest in your chimney, it will probably have been built by a Jackdaw. No other bird has quite a love affair with our flues. There are numerous telltale signs to confirm whether birds are nesting in your chimney; smoke filling the room due to blockage, debris falling down the chimney, sightings of adult birds bringing food and removing fecal sacs and of course, noise from the chicks (enter your loft and listen for calls.) Although these pesky birds can be an inconvenience to you, it is important to remember that it is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. To prevent nesting fit a properly designed bird guard to your chimney prior to nesting season in early March. Otherwise you will have to wait until July-August to have the nest removed and it is vital to fit a bird guard on the same day. Leave it 24 hours and the birds will have started to rebuild it.

Tartan Stoves can supply and fit bird guards for a discounted rate in March for ÂŁ50.00

Park Life Interview

with Siobhan Lappin Owner of The Yoga Place The Yoga Place opened in 2015. I have been a Yoga teacher and therapist for the past 24 years. My intention is to keep growing this into a place everyone can enjoy.

When did you first become interested in yoga? Yoga came to me. I was a gym addict. I didn’t consider if Yoga was going to make a difference to my needs. I started going because one of my clients insisted I made it to her class. That very first class changed me. In a few months I really got it. Yoga was transforming my thoughts and emotions. Now I live for mornings on my mat where I focus for my day.

Do you have a motto that you live your life by? I stay open…and try not to judge. That’s it. Accept changes in a positive way in your own life.

What therapies do you personally offer and what made you choose them? My pre-yoga, therapy included Electrolysis, Facial and Body treatments. I use my base skills combined with on-going study in India and Thailand on Yoga, Ayurveda and Thai therapy to offer more holistic treatments. At the Yoga Place I have also included Organic skin therapy, Thai herbal compress and Myofacial release for aches and pains. I like to look at how my skills can lift the effects of any therapy.

Was opening your own studio a life long ambition? It was more of a necessity. My

Gift ers h Voucilable Ava ow N

whole life is Yoga, as much as I am a teacher, it filters itself into everything, so to have this studio is like creating a home which is a key nurturing environment for my own wellbeing as well as the wellbeing of others. I’m a home bird and I’ve been looking and staying open and its here, 5 years of patience has paid off and I feel I can feed that need.

Do you have any advice for our readers thinking about yoga for the first time? Yoga comes from a lineage. Different styles promote wellbeing on various levels. Dynamic, Slow or Seated. Try a few classes to see what suits your own needs. Or try a “one to one” session.

• Yoga Classes & one to one tuition • Regular Workshops • Massage Certified training • Pilates Classes • Physio / Mobility Classes • Pre-natal yoga • Organic SPA with Eminence skincare • Retreats • Centre Hire available • Post-natal Pilates Mum & Baby • Baby Massage

• Body Massage • Detox • Electrolysis • De-Stress • Organic Facials • Reflexology • Anti-Aging • Thai Massage • Waxing

Glasgow’s Barlinnie prison, home to some of Scotland’s most notorious killers all kept in solitary confinement. Amongst them is Nelson Harrop. Nelson has a history, some may say an excuse, but there can be no excuse for his crimes. Despite his parents’ sexual transgressions, Nelson could have made choices, but who knows what goes on in the mind? And Nelson’s mind is a conversation all on its own with one focus - to kill again. Alan Ash’s Conversations with a Killer is a gripping read, a plot full of twists and violence stemming from the mind of Nelson Harrop, a mind tracked and investigated by Glasgow’s finest. Alan’s inspiration stemmed from in the early 80’s, working briefly with a man was into writing short stories and was penning his first book. Their paths took different directions, Alan followed the oil and gas engineering one and the other became a world famous novelist, Iain Banks. The book he was writing was ‘The Wasp Factory’. Alan said “The subject matter and characters came from the fact that I actually lived in the area where the story takes place and as a child played in the woods and forests of the | 39 Lennox castle hospital and swam in the river glazert.”

Outdoor fun for all with...

Getting children outside all year round is easier than you think with the help of Scottish outdoor play equipment specialists, Caledonia Play. Based in Kinross, the innovative company has grown extensively and now supplies gardens, schools and commercial organisations right across the UK. The ethos of the company is straightforward, outdoor time is essential for a healthy body and mind. They are a friendly helpful bunch - you must have a look at their easy-to-use website or call them for advice and inspiration.

Their range of solid wooden play frames is complimented by a selection of slides and swing attachments that suit all ages and abilities. They also offer a wide choice of other products from goal posts and sandpits to bespoke imaginative tree houses. The products can evolve as your family grows and will last for years, providing great value for money. Installation can be provided but most of Caledonia Play’s equipment is simple to assemble so you can do it yourself. The robust timber frames sit on the ground, meaning that they can be taken with you should you move, and the swing frames will even support an adult so you can play too. Why should the children have all the fun?

Goal Posts • Tree Houses • Sandpits Play Forts, Castles and Play Houses Large selection of Swings • Picnic Tables

Future Pathways

at Balfron High School At Balfron High we aim to equip all of our young people with the skills, attributes and qualifications to be successful beyond school. As DHT responsible for planning and co-ordinating Developing the Young Workforce activities, I have created Balfron High School Future Pathways. Future Pathways consists of a range of initiatives which provide support for our young people to become successful members of the workforce, some of which includes:

Mrs Patrick and Deputy Head Boy speaking at an education event

BAE Systems – Girls into Engineering Event

• opportunities to experience work based learning (work experience), mock interviews, information gathering events, lectures, speakers, etc. • Future Pathways events – for example to increase awareness of apprenticeships. • a BHS FPathways twitter account with information and updates on, for example, current opportunities in volunteering, work experience, apprenticeships and employment. • a BHS Future Pathways Website providing Future Pathways Advice, information about the work of our partners and access to Future Pathways Careers Information to ensure our young people are fully aware of the value of all of the opportunities available beyond school. We are very lucky to have a wide range of external partners already working with BHS who support our young people by offering a range

of opportunities including work experience, giving advice to teachers about current issues, attending Future Pathways careers events, giving mock interviews, etc.

S4 pupils hearing from speaker

We would welcome any new partners who would like to offer their support or find out more about working with Balfron High School to get in touch by completing the contact form on the Future Pathways website st/futurepathways/ or email me at Tracey Patrick, Depute Head Teacher, Balfron High School.

Help to Overcoming Reading and Language Difficulties In the modern world, strong reading, writing and language skills are crucial to success in order to maximise potential. However an estimated 30% of children find reading and writing difficult - despite good teaching and support - and this is often attributed to dyslexia. Dyslexia is one of many barriers to learning which hinder progress at school and can seriously affect confidence and self esteem.

Contact Cellfield in Stirling on 01786 447527 to find out more, or visit our website www.cellfieldukcom

Many families struggle to find help, however a unique brain plasticity-based programme provided in Stirling is achieving success in helping people break through the barrier to learning caused by dyslexia and other processing difficulties. Cellfield was introduced to the UK 7 years ago by former teacher and Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid who also runs Stirling’s Kip McGrath Education Centre. Cellfield is a multi sensory programme which develops and strengthens the areas in the brain used by good readers. After only 2 weeks Cellfield clients can gain on average about 2 years in their reading age. However this is only part of the story because, in addition to gains in reading Cellfield has also been life changing due to the positive impact on overall confidence and self-esteem. Developed in Australia, Cellfield is now available in six UK centres.

Country Mumkins Celebrates 1st Birthday success!

Enterprise, family and friends. There was a small business grant from LEADER and our craft shop was filled with a variety of creations from local crafters and artists. Coming up for our first year anniversary Donna and I look back over the last 3 years with a mixture of emotions – but mainly pride. 18 months of building renovations were stressful and very busy but the transformation of the old church building made it all worth while. We had a welcoming café where visitors could sample a slice of Scottish hospitality and locals could use it as somewhere to meet with friends and bring the kids. We have lots of people to thanks for help along the way from local trades and businesses, experts from Stirling

Here’s what our customers think... “ absolutely in love with your gorgeous place ” “ love the cafe, love the crafts. 10 out of 10 for everything...”

Our main priorities now are to stick to our original aims and goals. Continue doing all our own baking and cooking (our scones are developing a reputation all of their own!) increase our retail section sticking to our principles of selling only things hand crafted or recycled. Continue to offer our craft work shops but look to doing more, possibly stain glass, jewellery making, pottery, and ceramic painting for the kids. We are very much looking forward to 2016 and hope to form even stronger links with local businesses. We hope people will continue to like what we do and love seeing our beautiful little building.

Country Mumkins @ The Artisan Café

• Loving restored church building with cosy wood burner • Delicious home baking and tasty lunch menu • Artisan roasted coffee and speciality teas served in vintage china cups! • Over 20 crafters now selling with us – unusual & beautiful hand made gifts • Now stockists for Neil’s Yard Remedies

Spring craft course – wet and needle felting, silk scarf making, candle making and peg loom weaving . Please check our website for more information. Children’s craft table & ceramic painting – perfect rainy day activity! The old Strathfillan Church, Tyndrum, FK20 8RU T: 01838400391 E:

“Speaking to Trossachs Search & Rescue and hearing about their CPR classes we immediately signed up to one for all of our team, and will be arranging another to offer to our customers. We are pleased also to have already helped them with maintenance of their mobile medical unit vehicle and are planning a number of fundraising activities throughout the year’.

“We have set ourselves the challenge of creating real value for a charity this year. As well as donating funds we want to

We have also pledged to donate £5 to Trossachs Search & Rescue for each Mountfield lawnmower that we sell in 2016.”

Park Life Interview John McDonald

Head Teacher at Gartocharn Primary School

In the eighteen months which have passed since John McDonald took up his new post as Headteacher at Gartocharn Primary School, he has proved to be the catalyst in prompting significant change to the both the school’s ethos and to the premises themselves. To achieve his vision for the school to become a Centre of Excellence for Outdoor Education, John has been working in conjunction with the National Park, the RSPB, the local community and the Parent Council, all of whom have assisted him in moving the children’s learning outdoors wherever possible. John said: “At Gartocharn we are taking full advantage of the fantastic setting our school is in within the National Park and outdoor learning is at the heart of what we are doing. The children are regularly learning outside in all weathers, experiencing the wonder of Scottish nature! We have opened up a forest area in the school playground where the children can explore nature right on our doorstep, even during the night using our night vision cameras. We have had campfire nights, whole day walks and bike rides, winter forest nights in our woods and generally a lot of fun exploring and learning.” There has also been huge investment in the school with the installation of a state of the art 3G pitch, new windows, complete redecoration and the installation of Wi-fi technology. John added: “There is still more work planned as we strive to create a learning environment that meets the needs of our 21st century learners. “However, above all, we have a great wee school that cares about helping each child achieve their best, setting them on a path to follow their dreams and become successful citizens of our community and the wider world.” 74 |

How do I protect my early plants from frost? Picture by Paul Saunders Photography

Protecting plants The ever-increasing number of tender plants on offer may not withstand sustained cold without some form of protection. How you protect your plants from the effects of cold depends on the type of plants and the

situation they are growing in. Plants that are trained against walls or tender plants growing in the open ground can be protected with simple, fleece-covered frames. Alternatively, sandwich a layer of bracken leaves or straw between two large sections of chicken wire

and use this to cover plants during frosty evenings. Tender bulbs, corms and tender, herbaceous plants (that die back) should be covered with a thick mulch of manure, straw or old leaves to prevent the soil from freezing. In the spring, new shoots can be protected with a loose layer of straw or a bell-cloche.
