We may be biased, but we think the best things in life are trees! If you do too, you can help us grow the National Forest by dedicating a tree. Whether you want to give a special gift this Christmas that can be cherished for years to come, dedicate in memory of a loved one, or simply give back to the environment, dedicating a tree in the National Forest is a great thing to do and helps towards creating a greener future.
The National Forest has shown that trees inspire change, and not just for our landscape. By dedicating a tree, you will not only be helping to continue to grow the Forest, you will be helping to create the best conditions for wildlife to thrive, as well as a place where people can connect with nature and the outdoors.
Imagine our landscape scarred by centuries of coal mining. Decades ago, this was the reality. A landscape once black is now lush and green. In order to meet the challenges of climate change, our Forest must be resilient and adaptable into the future. We must continue to plant new woodlands, extend other habitats and improve connections so the benefits of the Forest can be felt by everyone. By dedicating a tree, you will be taking the first step in helping us to tackle these issues and help us to grow a greener future together.
plant from our selection of saplings including oak, hazel and silver birch.
Each dedication comes with a personalised certificate for you to download at home and a guarantee that your tree will be planted in the National Forest.
The planting season runs from November to March each year, and once your tree is planted, we contact you to confirm the location of the young woodland and how to visit, but please note that we do not mark individual trees in any way.
Each tree costs just £15, which covers the cost of not only the tree, but also a contribution to the purchase of the land and the future upkeep and management of the woodland. Your support for the National Forest is invaluable. Help us plant more trees in the National Forest and dedicate a tree here: nationalforest.org/ shop/dedicate-tree
So how do you dedicate a tree? Dedicating a tree online is simple, so simple you won’t even get your hands muddy! We do the planting, you just decide which type of tree you would like us to nationalforest.org
It’s great that you’ve heard about the new rules. The advice that you were given was right at the time. Under the old rules, you only had to register a trust with HMRC if there was tax to pay on it. This could be income tax, inheritance tax, capital gains or any other type of tax. The rules have been changed to make all financial dealings more transparent. It can also help to prevent money laundering.
Your trust will need to be registered as the money is being held for more than two years. The trust has been in place for four years already and your daughter won’t be able to inherit for at least another six years if the money is going to come to her when she’s 18.
As you’re a trustee, you’ll be responsible for
registering the trust with HMRC. It’s a process that is completed online; however, you’ll need to gather information about the people involved, including their dates of birth and National Insurance numbers. You’ll also need to know the type of trust, its name and the date it was created.
This is only one example of the type of trust that’s affected by the new rules. If you’re a trustee our experts can give you professional advice to understand whether the rules apply to you and what steps you need to take. As energy bills soar & temperatures fall, the Volunteer Centre is teaming up with the Parish Council to open a Warm Welcome Hub, to help residents stay safe and warm. This is part of a national Warm Hub network – a series of community venues providing a warm and friendly environment for people to meet over refreshments, find out how to keep warm for less and be signposted to other sources on invaluable advice.
The Castle Donington initiative will be launched during the October half-term holidays. The Warm Hub will open for extended hours throughout the week, and in addition to the social groups which operate from the Community Hub, people can take advantage of the Community Café. Young people will have a warm and safe space to relax in after school and have access to the internet and library for homework and play games.
The Parish Council and Volunteer Centre will join with local churches and charities to deliver the best solutions they can. Help will be sought from local people who would be prepared to supervise sessions or donate old games or craft items. Other things such as energy and cost-efficient cooking classes, art sessions, etc. are also being considered.
Anyone wishing to help with the initiative or who has ideas for activities are welcome to contact Castle Donington Parish Council on 01332 810 432 or the Volunteer Centre on 01332 850 526.
Full details of the Warm Hub initiative are available on www.cdpc.org.uk

Autumn is upon us once more and as the colours change and the leaves start to fall, we turn our thoughts to thick jumpers, cosy nights in by the fire and of course spending time with loved ones during the festive period. However, for those of us that find ourselves having to move home at this time of year, the thought of doing so whilst getting ready for the holidays can seem a little daunting.
Moving house is often placed right near the top of the list of life’s most stressful experiences, and with so many variables during the conveyancing and moving process, we thought it would be helpful to prepare a quick and simple guide for our clients to help reduce the stress of moving home. Whether you are buying your first home, downsizing or relocating from one rented property to another, here are some reminders and things to think about when moving.
It may have been some time since you saw the property and put your offer in so it is always worth having a post-offer viewing (some solicitors will advise of a pre-exchange viewing as well). Contact the team in the office to arrange this, and don’t forget to make notes on things like room measurements for the sofa, where the boiler and meters are and what the parking situation is like if the property doesn’t have a driveway or off-road parking.
Our next tip is to decide on whether a removal company would be right for you. Whilst they take a lot of the physical work out of moving, it is of course another cost to factor in and with solicitors, stamp duty and the rest, the actual cost of moving home can quickly ramp up.
On the day it is well worth packing a ‘survival kit’ box or bag that’s easily accessible and contains some basic essentials that you don’t want to have to go rummaging through boxes for. Things like a phone charger, small set of tools, bin bags and a vacuum cleaner can really help smooth the transition into your new home in the first 24 hours.
Once you’re in, don’t forget to set up things like utility bills and council tax. Hopefully you will have already written to the potentially long list of companies to notify them of your new address, but if not, you can always look at a post redirection service.
While moving itself can be a stressful experience, and a lot can happen during the buying, selling and renting of a property, the team at Martin&Co are on hand to take as much of that stress away as we possibly can. For those moving this Autumn, we hope it’s as straightforward as it can be!

As the festive season approaches, I thought I’d look at a few classics. Other wines may come and go but there are a few names that seem to be ever present and when revisited people are reminded why they are staples of so many wine racks and wine lists.
Domaine des Herbauges, Muscadet sue lie Cotes De Grandlieu, La Roche Blanche, Loire, France
Muscadet seems to have become a little forgotten but trust me – it’s worth revisiting. A great quality wine, it gives a lot more than others at the same price point. With a deep, golden colour, this is a charming, full-bodied Muscadet that expresses beautiful minerality, honey and grapefruit notes. The palate has flattering lemon with a light crisp finish. The perfect aperitif. Pair this with delicate salmon, seafood dishes, mature goats cheese or Asian cuisine.
Montsablé Chardonnay, IGP Pays D'Oc, France
Yes, we are talking Chardonnay!! Believe me they are not all the same. It’s all about the amount of oaking. The wines of Montsablé are inspired by the desire to create elegant Burgundian varietals from Southern France. Minimal oak is used resulting in Chardonnay with great palate weight, bright fruit and texture. A bright yellow gold hue and seductive scents
of blossom and cinnamon spice. A remarkable melange of pears, peach, honey toffee, cream and vanilla (from a short spell of oak ageing) on the palate. Beautifully balanced with ripeness, acidity, length and real structure. A very classy Chardonnay. A great match for fish or roast chicken.
La Cote Sauvage, Cairanne AOC, Cotes du Rhone, France Cotes du Rhone, some people’s go to red and to others a forgotten gem. For this La Côte Sauvage, fully ripe Grenache and Syrah grapes are hand picked from old bush vines on selected hillside slopes within Cairanne. A rich, intense wine drenched in dark red fruits. Cherry and a touch of cinnamon spice on the nose, soft dark plummy fruit, liquorice, chocolate, a hint of black tea on the palate. This wine is fullflavoured and smooth with subtle tannins.
A rich, savoury, satisfying mouthfulthe perfect match for red meat dishes and rich stews.
How about a little Chianti?
Pronounced aromas of ripe black fruit, morello cherry with floral hints and a touch of lightly spicy oak. The palate is richly-flavoured with plum, wild cherry fruit, balsamic notes and firm but ripe tannins - leading on to a long, dry and savoury finish. Fantastic with a Florentine steak.
If you’re looking for further recommendations on new wines to try give Karl a call on 07970 122501 or pop into the store on Borough Street – he’s always happy to chat all things wine! You can order online at www.thehonestwinecompanyltd.co.uk

Visit the What’s On page of the website – www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey - to book your place now.
With Bonfire Night just around the corner, you may want to prepare your dogs. Here’s my top tips to help you through the season!
• Set up a den a few weeks before, somewhere quiet and close to you. This could be an open crate or cosy corner. Add a comfy blanket / bed and your dogs favourite toys. Regularly offer them some tasty treats or chews there. This will help them see this as a good, safe place.
• Ensure your dog has been walked and toileted before dark so there is less chance of your dog being frightened outside. If you need to take your dog out, ensure they are on a lead – even in the garden, in case they get spooked and try to run away.
• Put an action film on the TV to disguise the bangs – a great excuse to catch up on the latest Bond film! Make sure your house is secure with windows closed and curtains drawn to block out the flashes.
• Check when local displays will be held so you can prepare and make sure you’re home.
• Reassure your dog! You will not make their behaviour worse by giving them comfort
and affection if they seek it. They are feeling genuinely frightened.
If your dog is struggling to cope with fireworks, please contact your vet or get in touch with me to see how I can help.

It was once the case that men would go out to work and women would stay at home. Men earned a living, and women looked after the house. Yet, while this backwards thinking may seem like a thing of the past to many, in certain rural areas these patriarchal practices are still surprisingly commonplace.
Within countryside communities, men largely hold the positions of power: three-quarters of farmers are male; two-thirds of police officers are male; over half of landlords are male. Whether intentionally or not, these male-dominated spheres can cause serious issues for women. This includes making those suffering domestic abuse less inclined to reach out for help - with the National Rural Crime Network (NRCN) finding that rural victims are half as likely to report abuse.
As Julia Mulligan, former Chair of the NRCN, explains: “Idyllic rural life, characterised by gentle living, tradition and close-knit communities, has a dark side. It fosters a strong sense of male entitlement, which goes comparatively unchecked, flourishing alongside endemic ignorance about domestic abuse, deliberate or otherwise. It is taboo, with people deliberately turning their backs on victims, who are left physically and socially isolated, feeling deeply ashamed.”
Through a fear of not being believed, and a reluctance to damage the reputation of popular and powerful men in their neighbourhoods, victims often keep quiet. This can have a serious effect, with abuse in rural areas lasting 25% longer than in urban areas. Communities dominated by toxic masculinity are harming women, and this needs to change.
To help bring about this change, fighting back against what Mulligan describes as “the hidden underbelly of rural communities”, Rural Action Derbyshire are supporting the 16 Days of Activism
Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. Aiming to break down toxic masculinity and replace it with ‘positive masculinity’, which denounces stereotypes that say certain values and emotions are ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’, this campaign will push to make rural areas more accepting, openminded places.
We at RAD, through our domestic abuse awareness service The Willow Project, will be highlighting the need for positive masculinity and diving into how we can bring more rural communities into the 21st century. This will build on our crucial regular work delivering awareness training, signposting victims to support services, and spreading vital information through digital channels such as TikTok and The Willow Pod.
Yet we are always looking for more people to help. It is ultimately our volunteers, those who go out into their own communities and push to improve attitudes on the ground, that make the biggest difference. If you think you can support our work and make a change in your local area, please visit our website, or get in touch with Skye Peat on s.peat@ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk or 07745 539445.
Together, we can break down toxic masculinity, and create rural communities that are safe for everyone. ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk

We have been successful in obtaining a grant from VEOLIA Environmental Trust for improvements to Lockington play area. A separate application through the National Lottery for Hemington play area has been unsuccessful, so we will be making other applications for this work. It is now likely that any significant installations will be early 2023.
Planning work is underway by the contractors with orders placed for external panels along with roofing and the site being readied. Most likely completion is aimed for end 2022 / early 2023.

reviewed with current rising costs in an attempt to keep booking costs as low as possible. Improved internet connectivity is also being considered alongside this matter. The hall is available for booking through the clerk - clerk@hemlock.org.uk or via the Lockington Village Hall webpage.
The hearing date for the St Modwen appeal has been set for Wednesday 23rd November. All documents submitted are available on NWLDC Planning webpage.
The first consolidated Neighbourhood Plan draft has been completed. This has enabled us to arrange an open event at Lockington Village Hall from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 26th November to share the content and proposed policies ahead of submission to NWLDC. All are welcome to drop in during the afternoon and refreshments will be served.
