In order to ensure that the Dreamweaver course is right for you check that you can answer the following questions: • Do you have a working knowledge of basic computing commands using menus and toolbars – especially opening, saving and closing files? • Do you have an understanding of basic file management and navigation techniques – saving to a location, opening from a location, creating new folders to save into. • Do you have experience in using the World Wide Web with some personal appreciation of web design and layout concepts? • Do you have experience in using some other text and image document creation program such as Microsoft Word, Publisher, FrontPage and/or SharePoint Designer (or similar)?

Glazing and Surface Decoration This course will introduce students to the many different ways of decorating ceramic, both contemporary and historical. You will be expected to have passed a level 1 Ceramic Sculpture course before embarking on this module, therefore it is not suitable for beginners. We will consider the source origin and types of clays as well as their unique qualities in relation to your finished piece. We will also look at how to make and fire glazes, glazing temperatures, health and safety issues, glaze defects defects and different kilns and their uses. There will also be a weekend where raku and other basic kiln firing will take place outdoors. A trip to Stoke on Trent may be organised giving an opportunity to see how the effect the pottery industry has had on our social history and language. Ceramic Artefact The Gallery: Wall, Plinth or Interior Based Work. This module will develop students understanding of materials, techniques and processes learnt at level one. It will broaden the student’s knowledge of contemporary makers and will encourage the generation of ideas to feed into their personal outcomes. The development of a personal language from researched ideas will be evidenced in the visual diaries and with the judgment and technical skills employed in the realization of their final piece of work. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding and analysis of their research and be able to reflect on their work within the context of professional practice. Students will be encouraged to make use of the

exhibitions associated with the Ceramic Collection of the University as a direct learning resource. The module will be introduced by a lecture and backed up by two seminars and workshop practice and demonstrations. Introduction to Wood Engraving (Intensive Summer School) It is recommended that you complete ‘Introduction to Printmaking’ in order to develop basic skills in relief printing or have previous skills in printmaking. This course aims to develop competency in the handling of woodblocks and plastic polymer blocks for engraving and will be taught in the School of Art, Aberystwyth, using the well equipped print workshop. Some materials are included in the course fee and tools can be borrowed for the class. Approaches to Life Painting This is an introductory course to some of the basic skills of life painting and is designed as a follow on course from ‘Approaches to Life Drawing’. Through a series of practical classes you will build a portfolio of paintings of the nude. You are also required to investigate the historical and contemporary context of life painting. Sessions will include tonal painting, flesh, colour studies, composition, proportion, planes and structures of the body, speed studies and some colour theory.
