(DEPUTY) MAYOR’S VOICE Both myself and The Mayor have been increasingly busy as Covid restrictions ease and we have been pleased to accept all the invitations received if we possibly can. We have been delighted to see the success of major local events including music festivals, Petts Wood Calling and Priory Live, as well as the May Queen crowning ceremonies in Orpington and Petts Wood, the latter being part of the annual May Fayre (just a little late this year!). Crofton Roman Villa hosted the launch of the latest in a series of booklets published by Dr Brian Philp and his excellent band of archaeologists, fellow authors and helpers. If you haven’t visited, the Villa has been in a 33year partnership between the London Borough of Bromley and local archaeologists and offers a superb insight into how much Roman history can be found locally. Dr Philp is an inspirational enthusiast, as many local school children can testify. Some things have survived throughout Covid, and the Monkey Puzzle Nursery in Sevenoaks Road opened by the previous Mayor, Cllr Hannah Gray, celebrated a successful first year with an anniversary fete and barbecue, which I attended, and was hosted by Joanna Whelan and Becky Walters.
Although Orpington is the main town centre, our outer London suburb is effectively made up of a number of village communities. We were Councillor Tony Owen delighted to celebrate the retirement, after 41 years, of Kerry and Theo Kokkinos and his delightful family, who ran Farnborough Village Post Office. They were presented with a certificate and letter signed by the Mayor, in a street ceremony organised by the local village society. This also gave an opportunity for local residents to welcome Mrs Swarna Arulanantham and Mr Arulanantham Ramasamy to the post office and the continuation of this increasingly valuable local service. As always, if you would like the Mayor to celebrate the opening or anniversary of your business, charity or society; or to thank our many voluntary and largely unsung helpers who do so much for our community, the Mayor’s office will be delighted to arrange it. Councillor Tony Owen Deputy Mayor of Bromley 2021-22
