Study field: FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY The module „Fundamentals of Chemistry and Biochemistry“ covers classical chemical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics, the basics of modern organic chemistry. Students are introduced to the basic concepts of biochemistry, to the principles of qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis with emphasis on classical methods. In this module, particular attention is paid to the practical work in the laboratory of chemistry. The main aim of the analytical laboratory course is to develop good skills for the performance of analytical procedures. The module covers the various aspects of environmental chemistry. This course is designed to introduce students to the basic principles of aquatic chemistry, atmospheric chemistry and the chemistry of soils. Students are given the knowledge of some of the biologically active compound classes such as hormones, lipids, alkaloids, prostaglandins, antibiotics, plant hormones, and pheromones. Students are introduced to the main stages of their synthesis, the potential use and research problems. Study field: PHYSICS This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles of nanoscience. Presented nanoscale structures and phenomena associated with nanoscale characteristics. Astrophysics: this is an introduction to astrophysics. Solid State Physics, intended to convey the basic knowledge of the crystal structure and its mechanical, optical, electrical and magnetic properties. Electrodynamics and Special Theory of Relativity: the main aim of this course is to introduce students with classical theory of electric and magnetic phenomena and with quantum electrodynamics. The main aim of Liquid Crystal Physics course is to introduce students with liquid crystals which are substances demonstrating features of the solid state physics in the liquid crystalline phase. Liquid Crystal Physics is a rich subject where are possible elements to combine with other for the creation of nanoscale devices. The main aim of Nanophotonics course is to introduce students with artificial materials – photonic crystals, applications and light propagation in the photonic band gap materials (PBG). PBG are a novel class of photonic crystals that carry the concept of molding the flow of light to the most microscopic level allowed by the laws of physics. Consisting of dielectric microstructures with periodicity of roughly half the wavelength of light.
