MARCH 2016

Man’s decision to elevate his own knowledge over God’s has resulted in the fact that we have lacked inherent peace. Since the fall of mankind we have been in distress instead of in His rest. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus promises our troubled souls His rest. The offer is clear, “You want rest? Then take my yoke upon you”. That is His invitation. When we make Jesus Lord of our lives the prideful soul is dethroned. Jesus says that the yoke is easy and the burden is light, but for the selfish person it is anything but easy. ‘Easy’ could also be understood that the yoke is the only tool needed to achieve the goal, namely, for our souls to find rest. Our souls need an adjustment that only Jesus can provide and it involves coming to Him as Lord. It is significant that the word for taking up His yoke is the same word used in Matthew 16:2426 by Jesus when He instructs us to “take up our cross”.

The choice is obvious, the self-seeking soul life will resist to be dethroned and we will continue to cling to the sinful yoke of our adamic nature that cannot give us rest. Since the fall selfexaltation has taken the place of God’s rulership in us.

On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished”. When we come to Him we find the rest we need. We need to be yoked to the One who laid His life down, take up our own cross, so that we can return to the rest which was intended before the fall.

It is astonishing how many people still want to follow their own scheme. We often just want a quick fix. If we do his we sound like Frank Sinatra who loved to sing, “I did it my way”. As a result, we try to define our own way to find rest by acquiring money, success, pleasure or any other man made solution.

Without the yoke we forfeit the rest.

King Jesus wants you to be at rest and not stressed. There are many times we are tempted to move out of that God-given rest. David experienced this in Psalm 116:7, “Return to your rest, oh my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you”.
