is not your typical 18year old. How many teenagers do you know who have written and directed a mini-series – and one that focuses on the intertwining lives of teens amidst political turmoil? Oliver, who lives in Lawrence, wrote and directed A Band Apart, a seven-episode series that wrapped up ¿OPLQJDWWKHHQGRI-XQH Oliver says she filmed the series in six weeks with a cast and crew of volunteers between the ages of 12 and 65. Currently, the series is in the post-production stage. Oliver describes A Band Apart as an R-rated teen drama miniseries set in the year 2016/2017 that follows the complex lives and relationships of 15 teenagers

as the threat of political turmoil looms and a new president takes RIÂżFH 7KH FDVW LV PDGH XS RI mostly high school-age students. Oliver worked with almost no budget, but had the support of generous and knowledgeable volunteers. “I was very fortunate to have the full support of Dan Ginavan with LightLyre Films, LLC,â€? she says. “He has supported me from day one by graciously lending me his equipment and guiding me WKURXJKWKHÂżOPLQJSURFHVV,Q addition to that, he is allowing me to edit the series in his editing studio. He was on set with me almost every day for over two months and taught me how to use the camera and would give me advice and encouragement daily.â€? Even before she began writing the series, Oliver knew she wanted to create a show in a high school setting, with the primary focus on the characters

and the issues between them. The show includes four gay characters, two lesbians, and two bisexual characters--all in high school. Combined, the LGBTQ characters make up half of the main cast. “I didn’t want any gay characters that could really be categorized into any stereotype,â€? Oliver says. One thing Oliver says the series does not cover is a character’s coming-out story. “Many times the main story that revolves around gay characters is the coming-out story, but there’s so much more to someone than just that,â€? she explains. “Granted, it is important for young gay teens WRVHHVWURQJÂżFWLRQDOFKDUDFWHUV come out and be openly gay on screen, but it seems the stories just deflate after that and are limited to plots that focus on their sexuality. A national search for the next artistic director of Heartland Men’s Chorus will commence in early fall, with the goal to announce the new appointment in early 2014. Nadeau joined the HMC staff in 1998. During his 15-year tenure, the Chorus has grown dramatically in terms of members/ singers, audience, and local and national recognition. More than 140 men now perform in a concert cycle to consistently sold-out houses. A three-concert, four performance season has increased to a seven performance season, drawing the largest audiences for choral programming in the region.

Today, the It Gets Better Project (www.itgetsbetter.org) has become a global movement, inspiring more than 50,000 It Gets Better videos viewed over 50 million times. The It Gets Better book, co-edited by Savage and Miller, was published in March 2011, and an MTV documentary special, It Gets Better, aired in February 2012.

new school year is starting. It will be the eighth school year since I moved into a little house across the street from a school. I was so excited that I didn’t need to move into an apartment, what with beginning my transition and all. Coming and going. Sometimes as Steven. Sometimes as Stephanie. I worried a bit about sometimes presenting as male, sometimes as female, and how that would work out. It is an elementary school. Would some teacher or parent notice and realize there was a transgender person living so close to where their children played on the playground? Of course, being transgender does not increase the likelihood that a person will be or do anything inappropriate. Unfortunately, many people believe that it does. There are many people who think that transgender people are a danger to children. There is no doubt that being publicly transgender increases the likelihood that I will meet with violence.

yelled again. Hey, lady! As I looked up, I realized they were yelling at me. Hey, lady! Will you get us the ball? I immediately jumped to my feet and ran to the ball. No doubt there was great joy on my face as I tossed the ball back over the fence. Not long after that, a friend of mine, a teacher at the school, saw me arrive home for lunch. She yelled, Stephanie! She came up to the fence, several children in tow, and she introduced them to me as her friend. How T h e s e w e r e t h e f i r s t , wonderful to feel completely frightening days outside the comfortable while standing there closet. Finally living in the and visiting. Then the children do you reconcile being Christian with discriminating against any group of human beings? As I realized that identifying as both transgender and Christian was intriguing to some people, I decided to be more public about these two (of my many) identities. I went to makestickers.com and ordered a bumper sticker that said Transgender and Christian. Of course, I thought about how that would be received with my car parked in front of the house across the street from

the school. About that time, I WHVWL¿HGDWWKHORFDOVFKRROERDUG meeting about the need to have protections for LGBT students and staff. And of course, I selfidentified as transgender and Christian. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a secret anymore. I have come to understand that being publicly transgender not only increases the likelihood that I will meet with violence. It also decreases the likelihood that other transgender people will meet with violence. The fact that I live across the street from a school makes that oh-so-muchmore important. Needless to say, the new bumper sticker went on the car. Next to the bumper sticker that said The Equality Car. And I parked it in front of my house. From time to time, a parent would stop to look at it as they were walking their child to the school. A few weeks ago, a gentleman in another car made a left turn into the side of the Equality Car. The gentleman’s insurance company determined that my FDUZRXOGFRVWPRUHWR¿[WKDQ she was worth, so they gave me some money and towed her away. The sadness of that day was somewhat tempered by the purchase of the successor to the Equality Car. I thought long and hard about whether or not to put a new Transgender and Christian bumper sticker on the Equality Car II. Neighbors next door and all that. Kansas highways and what not. Still across the street from the school. In the end, it came down to one thing, and there was no real choice about the bumper sticker. I am not ashamed of who I am. There is nothing wrong with who I am. In my educational presentations, it is not uncommon for someone to ask me, Why would a person be public about being transgender? 6XI¿FHLWWRVD\WKDW,DQVZHUWKDW question with another. Why not? A new school year is starting. It will be the eighth school year since I moved into a little house across the street from a school. I can’t wait to see how it goes! By Helen Barnes Editor’s note: The following is the ¿UVW LQ D WKUHHSDUW VHULHV RQ VXLFLGH The names of some people have been omitted to protect them and the people who love them.

Luckily the farmer let A. in, bloody mess that she was, otherwise, she would have died right there on his porch out in the middle of nowhere. She had gotten to the point where she couldn’t take the relationship struggles anymore and had driven herself out into the country. After shooting herself in the stomach, A. had changed her mind. It had been a long walk to the nearest house and she couldn’t remember how long it took to get there. B. was an inveterate reader of comic books. She loved Vampirella, Conan, all the new stuff. If anyone needed anything, B. was the “go to gal. The world changed forever the day B.’s lover found her in the tub bleeding through the scars of previous attempts. B. was cremated with one of her favorite comics. The military meant everything to C. When she found out that she wouldn’t be able to re-up, she went home, packed a box for her daughter, put together a donation for the local museum of some of her memorabilia, and shot herself in the mouth with her service revolver.

Sad stories, these. Many of us know (or knew) someone just like this. Some were successful in their attempt at suicide, some changed their minds. That time. According to the 2012 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention Report, “a previous suicide attempt is a known predictor of suicide death. Overall, suicide rates are climbing, so much so that the CDC released a study on May 2 (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) of this year showing that more Americans kill themselves than die in car accidents. They also added these statistics concerning increasing suicide rates: ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡

+28% for ages 35-64 +48% for ages 50-54 +49% for ages 55-59 +40% for white nonHispanics ‡ +65% for American Indian and Alaska Natives ‡ +23% or more across all four major regions of the United States ‡ +81% for hanging/ suffocation, +14% for ¿UHDUPVE\ poisoning Multiple reports note that suicide is escalating among other groups also: veterans, those with long-term health problems apart from mental disorders, and teens who have had a friend (or friends) commit suicide. Other groups are suspected

of having rising suicide rates, such as the LBGT population, but there simply hasn’t been consistent information on how much people’s sexual orientation or gender identity might have contributed: it’s not something SXWRQWKHGHDWKFHUWLÂżFDWH However, there has been global research on survivors of non-fatal attempts noting that there seems to be a relationship between sexual orientation and the likelihood of a suicide attempt. Transgender populations are still not part of the demographics in suicide studies, but a 2009 National Transgender Discrimination Survey reported that 41% of their respondents had attempted suicide at least once. The 2012 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention report posits that for LBGT populations, suicidal behaviors tend to be related to “minority stress,â€? which stems from the cultural and social prejudice attached to minority sexual orientation and gender identity. This stress includes individual experiences of prejudice or discrimination, such as family rejection, harassment, bullying, violence, and victimization. Increasingly recognized as an aspect ofminority stress is “institutional discriminationâ€? resulting from laws and public policies that create inequities or omit LGBT people from benefits and protections afforded others. (pg. 122)

make an attempt. N o w, r e s e a r c h e r s a r e discovering that those formerly “targeted groups are not the only ones who might try to kill themselves. The problem has become to determine who might make a premeditated attempt and who might make an impulsive one. Unfortunately, there seems to be little indication for mental health professionals that either “style of attempt is related to an individual’s personality. In the U.S., suicide has become so epidemic that it was a subject for the National Conference on Mental Health at the White House on June 03, 2013. President Barack Obama opened the conference by asking for a focus on mental health issues and for a broadening of access to proper care for mental illness. He has made it a part of the Administration’s effort to launch a national conversation to increase understanding and awareness of mental health. There is a global focus on suicide prevention as well. The World Health Organization (WHO) has marked Sept. 10 as World Suicide Prevention Day. National groups and local organizations plan activities in association with WHO in order to educate the public and reach out to those in need. For those who have friends or loved ones that might be considering suicide, the best thing to do is be as supportive as possible and get help for them as soon as possible. Leather Life

SEPTEMBER 2013

By Nolin Christensen aka Master C

This column is dedicated to explaining to others what the Leather lifestyle is about and what we do.

Poly Relationships Over the next few months, I’m going to talk about the various types and dynamics of polygamy relationships within the Leather community. Where monogamy is a committed relationship between two individuals, polygamy, or poly for short, is a general term used to describe any relationship (sexual or not) where there are more than

two partners in the committed relationship. Polygamy is a term that is used most frequently in society. And most people think of Mormons and their multiple wives. But there are various types of poly relationships in the poly lifestyle. The correct term for a man with multiple wives is polygyny. When a woman has more than one husband it is called polyandry. In both of these, only the primary person has sex with the partners. The partners themselves do not have sex with the other partners. While there are both polygyny and polyandry relationships in the community there are also other types. One of these is referred to as Group Marriage or polyamorous relationships. Polyamory means “loving more than one.” Polyamory is also sometimes referred to as a triad because it is most common to have three individuals in the relationship. In a polyamorous relationship all individuals of the relationship have sexual relations with all of the other partners.

But what are the various dynamics within the Leather community? The list I’m about to give goes beyond the traditional poly-type relationships listed above. In the Leather community there is both sexual and nonsexual type relationships. There are monogamous relationships and there are open relationships. Open relationships are where the partners are allowed to have sex with individuals outside the committed partners. In the Leather community, coupled along with the monogamy, polygyny, polyandry and polyamory relationships, there are also very special relationship dynamics amongst

the partners. It is these dynamics we will be discussing over the next several months. Here are some of the various relationships dynamics that can exist in the Leather community, although this is the most common list, it is by no means a complete list: Master/slave, Sir/boy, Sir/ girl, Ma’am/girl, Ma’am/boy, Master/puppy, Mistress/sub (slave, boy, or girl). I will discuss the various components of these relationships, the complications, the characteristics, the remarkable bond that develops between the partners and most of all the love one gets from being in that type of relationship.
