Connections Summer 2022

Less scarring, more glowing for Brandy Eskew

A dog bite 26 years ago left Brandy Eskew with multiple scars on her face, including the largest one that ran from her nose to her top lip.

“I became used to it, but I was always self-conscious about it,” said Brandy, now 49. “I’d always put my hand up over my lip when meeting new people.”

That all changed when she started a new job with Colton McNichols, MD, at the Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic at Liberty Hospital in 2021.

“I never knew there were so many options that didn’t involve surgery for improving my skin and minimizing my scars,” she said.

By this point in her life, those scars included ones left behind from skin cancer, sun damage and keloids – a firm rubbery fibrous scar at the site of injured skin.

“I had always thought about doing something about the scarring, so I asked Dr. McNichols about chemical peels to reduce the scars’ visual effects and that’s when he told me he could possibly reduce the effects of the indention of the scar under my nose.”

Dr. McNichols used an injectable filler of hyraluronic acid to smooth out the indention - leaving Brandy in tears of joy.

“The first time I saw it after the filler, I cried,” she said. “It looked like the scar had completely disappeared. Something I had been carrying around on my face for 26 years was almost impossible to see.”

For her other scarring, including the ones left behind by skin cancer and sun damage, Brandy is a believer in chemical skin peels. “I love it when people I haven’t seen in a while notice and comment on my glowing skin.”

The cosmetic change may be on the outside, but the real change is internal, she said. “My mom always said if you feel beautiful, you are beautiful. Having these little things fixed easily without surgery can make such a big difference. We all have scars, and for some, they affect our appearance, which affects our emotions.”

With a big smile, she added, “I can now meet new people, and my hand no longer covers my lip.”
