Securing Loads 309

Don’t run the line around an object that can move or slide Try to avoid putting light items or items with wheels on the front line next to the securing rope. They may move during transport and create havoc. Try to put these items in the middle of the objects you’re securing.

Suggestions Here are a few suggestions to help you when you’re transporting items: •

Always bring a tape measure Whenever you’re moving or placing something, it’s a good idea to measure before you expend the energy. If a couch won’t fit through a doorway, it’s a good idea to know this before dragging the couch up two flights of stairs.

Watch out for bungee cords These cords may be pulled tightly around an item and releasing them may cause them to snap violently. You don’t want to loose an eye because you weren’t paying attention when handling a simple elastic band.

Call out before activating a truck lift For grips, standard practice requires you to call out “going up” or “going down” before activating the lift gate on the back of a truck. Often art department people don’t follow this simple etiquette and endanger or injure others because of it. This simple warning tells everyone around the back of the truck to be aware that things are moving. Please, please, please make the effort to perform this simple task.
