resorter notes Sixth annual Hope Walk set for Sept. 28 In 2008, a member of a Lake Geneva book club was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, she was diagnosed very early and had the insurance necessary to cover her treatments. The other book club members were either breast cancer survivors themselves or had friends and family touched by cancer. This group of women decided to take action. They put down their books, and took up a worthy cause. They started a fund for cancer treatment. The goal was to help the uninsured or underinsured as they battle breast cancer. This action became what we know today as, The Lake Geneva Hope Walk. On Saturday, September 28, 2013, the Lake Geneva Hope Walk will host its sixth annual noncompetitive walk along the beautiful Geneva Lake

shorepath. The proceeds go to the Breast Treatment Assistance Program at a local hospital to help offset treatment cost for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. Participants will have three options: walk 14 miles from Lake Geneva to Williams Bay and back, walk 2.5 miles along the path and turn around, or pick a distance and turn around at any time. These flexible options, the reasonable registration cost of $30 in advance and $35 the day of the walk, and the ability to

purchase a pink pinwheel for $5 that will be displayed along the trail to honor or remember loved ones with breast cancer help to make the event available to anyone who wishes to make a difference. In addition, each walker will have the opportunity to stretch and dance the Pink Glove Dance with an expert, to shop in the “Pink Boutique,” to receive a gift if they are one of the first registered participants, and to have an opportunity to win the 2013 Faces of Hope best costume award.

Lake Lawn Resort will host their first-ever Venetian Night on Sat., Aug. 24. The night will kick off with live musical entertainment at 5 p.m. and a lakeside cookout at 5:30 p.m., followed by an island paradise-themed boat parade beginning at 8 p.m. Participating boats will be adorned with lights and decorations, with the best-decorated vessel chosen as the winner following the procession. Communities around the nation have modeled boat parades after those featured during the annual Carnival celebration in Venice, Italy. Lake Lawn is thrilled to bring a Venice-style boat parade to Delavan Lake. “With similar parades springing up all over, we thought it was time to bring the fun and excitement to Delavan Lake, adding our own little twist,” said Lake Lawn Resort General Manager Dave Sekeres. “It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate our beautiful lakefront and become better acquainted with the local boating community.” Lake Lawn will complement the boats’ island paradise décor with an island party cookout beside the lake. Spectators are invited to take in the sights and enjoy a special menu featuring island greens, tropical fruit salad, islandspiced red chile teriyaki glazed chicken, rum runner’s roast pork and more. There will also be free beverage tastings and drink specials offered throughout the evening. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 4-11, and free for children three and under. Reservations are encouraged. Visitors are also encouraged to take advantage of the many watersports and lake activities that are available at Lake Lawn throughout the summer. Following Main St. through history hile Maple Park and its surrounding district were the hub of residential life in early Lake Geneva, the commercial center of the town was built around the water. Not the lake, but the White River that feeds into it. Main Street, Lake Geneva, sprang up around the earliest mills that were built to capitalize on water power. The earliest claim to the property was staked by Christopher Payne in 1836. The site lies just south of the intersections of what South-East Main St. (704, 712) circa 1911 are now Main and Center streets By the early 1840s, Lake Geneva could boast a couple hotels, a — the very heart of today’s busgeneral store or two and three churches. tling downtown. The then-village had been laid out by Thomas McKaig, who had used the north line of Main Street to work north and south in determining the quarter-acre lots (12 lots to a block, with each block divided by a 16-foot alley). Of the community’s thoroughfares, local historian James Simmons wrote, “Our streets are exceptionally wide, two of them, Main and Broad, being 100 feet in width … thus giving ample space for roadbeds, sidewalks and shade trees, and the free passage of air and sunshine.” The historical buildings along Main Street mark the original dimensions of the road, and although summer traffic might make it seem crowded, the street still boasts plenty of shade, sunshine and fresh air. The nationally-designated historical Main Street block is home to some of the city’s oldest buildings, and most retain their original architectural details. A walk along the 700 block of Main is one of the best ways to take in the structures, many of which are Italianate Commercial. 704 MAIN ST.

Lake Geneva One of the city’s oldest buildings (and the oldest business structure) is 711 Main St. The Italianate storefront was once home to a furniture store and dates back to 1848. Directly across the street at 712 Main is another Italianatestyle building, circa 1884, which was the site of the First National Bank. These two businesses are flanked by corner buildings that also were built in the Italianate Commercial style: at 703 Main St. stands the Walter-Trinke building, which once was home to a knitting mill. At 704 Main St., the 1848 building was constructed for use as the first inland bank in the state.

The structure is located at the foot of a hill that offers a commanding view of Main Street’s sweep west. Making the most of the westward view is St. Francis de Sales Church (148 Main St.). The original church was erected in about 1847, but a new larger structure was commissioned in 1890, built just to the west of the first church. The building materials were cream brick, a trendy but architecturally sound choice. The church has since been expanded and remodeled to suit a more modern congregation, but the views are as good as ever for parishioners. SEE MORE ON LAKE GENEVA’S MAIN STREET ON PAGE 18

If you head west down Main Street from the 700 block, you’ll continue past another location for the First National Bank, 747 Main. The building at the northwest corner of Main and Broad is one of the few non-Italianate structures to overlook this block. An example of the Colonial Revival, 771 Main St. was originally the site of Lake Geneva’s first hotel, the Lake House. The hotel was destroyed by fire in the 1920s and the structure that stands today was built in 1929 as the Power and Light Company headquarters. Across from this corner, the Metropolitan Building (now Landmark Center, 772 Main St.) is one of the most prominent reminders of the Cream City brick era. When the buff brick trend hit Lake Geneva, homes, businesses and churches were constructed of commercial grades of brick.

772 MAIN ST.

771 MAIN ST.

Built in 1873 as the Hotel Clair, the Landmark Center is made of Racine pressed cream bricks. It’s seen use as a drugstore, the Lake Geneva Herald offices, a public hall and a harness shop, according to the “Walking Tour of Olde Lake Geneva Towne” guide published by the city’s Plaque and Walking Tour Commission. A block further west, and Main Street begins to be claimed by the residential neighborhoods. (The thoroughfare borders on Maple Park, and many of the city’s finest examples of Victorian “Painted Ladies” can be found north of the 900 block of Main).

Lake Geneva The south 900 block of Main is dominated by Lake Geneva Library (918 Main St.), a Prairiestyle structure that many mistake for a Frank Lloyd Wright creation. It was, however, designed by James Dresser, who studied under the famous architect and was clearly inspired by him. The 1950s building takes full advantage of its situation on the shoreline of Geneva Lake, and Library Park affords walkers a shady respite and easy access to the public shorepath that circles Geneva Lake. Across the street from Library Park, residences run the gamut of architectural styles. One of the most historically significant is the home at 1003 Main St., a Second Empire home. The mansard roof and balconies, along with the dormer windows, reflect the French 17th century influence. Built of wood and wood shingles, the home has been restored and maintained over the years.

MAIN ST. LOOKING WEST It was once the home for Dr. Alexander Palmer, who had it constructed in 1860. But it hasn’t always graced the 1000 block of Main — it was moved from its original site on Broad Street in the 1970s. Other architectural styles in this neighborhood include: The 1840s Greek Revival style home at 915 Main St., the “Walking Tour” booklet notes that Civil War Generals Ulysses S. Grant and W. T. Sheridan visited this home. The Tudor Revival at 933 Main St., which was built in the early 1900s for another doctor, W. H. MacDonald. Story & photos by Jessica Franzene

into such projects can give homeowners a greater sense of pride in their homes. But no two home improvement projects are the same, and homeowners should know that certain projects are best tackled during certain times of the year. Fall is a great season to work on your house, as the weather is often at its most agreeable once the summer heat has gone and before winter weather arrives. The following are a handful of fall-friendly home improvement projects for homeowners looking to improve their homes. Whether you’re repairing or replacing the roof, fall is a great time of year to dust

off the ladder and get some work done on your roof for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, fall is ideal for roof work because you won’t have to be up on the roof with the summer heat bearing down on you. This can make the project move along more quickly, which is especially beneficial if you are paying laborers to work on the roof. The fewer hours workers are fixing your roof, the less you will be paying in labor costs. In addition, fixing up the roof in the fall ensures those winter storms, be it rain or snow, won’t find their way into your home via leaks. A leaky roof in winter is hard to fix, as the roof sur-

face could be treacherous in the winter and winter winds can make it dangerous to be up on the roof at all. Addressing leaks in the fall can prevent damage to your home’s interior, which can mount up if a leaky roof is not addressed until the following spring. When the weather outside gets frightful, poorly insulated windows can allow cold air into the home. That often has a trickle-down effect on finances, forcing you to turn up the thermostat in an attempt to offset the cold air pouring into the home. Whether you need your windows replaced or simply need to patch up any leaks, a proactive approach to leaky or older windows in the fall can save you from unnecessarily high heating bills come the winter. Addressing leaky windows also makes a home more comfortable for its inhabitants. Fall is the ideal time to address a home’s windows because the temperature outside tends to be pleasant. This means you likely won’t have to make much of an effort to offset the elements, and open windows in the fall won’t make your home’s interior very hot or cold like they might if you were to tackle the project during the summer or winter.
