The Geneva Lake Art Association’s 33rd fine art fair, Art in the Park, will be located at Flat Iron Park, (Center Street just South of Main) on the shore of Lake Geneva. Art in the Park is a juried show that spotlights original fine art of 81 artists from throughout the United States, featuring paintings, photography, pottery, graphics sculptures, jewelry and more available for purchase. In addition, there will be a silent auction on Saturday and Sunday where visitors can bid on artwork donated by exhibitors. The event will also feature live entertainment, food and beverage, and a children’s art activity tent. The show runs from 10am-5pm on Saturday, August 10th and from 10am-4pm on Sunday, August 11th, 2013. GLAA invites you to meet their artists and discuss their work. The show provides an opportunity to view and purchase original, one of a kind artwork. Many art lovers make this show a “Must Attend” event for that very reason. A free shuttle is available every 20 minutes from the Petco/Office Max parking lot at Edwards Boulevard and Highway 50 to downtown. Founded in 1947, GLAA encourages individual artistic growth and excellence. Geneva Lake Art Association fosters a community appreciation of the fine arts through the arrangement of shows, monthly programs, lectures, demonstrations and workshops. GLAA is a volunteer organization under the direction of an elected board of directors. They support and encourage all forms of art and cultural activities. Funding comes from membership dues, gallery fees, sponsors, fund-raisers and the proceeds from our annual Art in the Park, an outdoor, Come By Boat ... Come By Car For Lunch, Dinner Or Cocktails

Volunteers — among them the Lake Geneva History Buffs and now-curate Helen Brandt — had spent years amassing and cataloguing the collection that strained the display and storage space. The treasures include Native American artifacts, antiques from local estates and archives of firsthand accounts of Lake Genevans throughout the city’s history. Like the original street plan of Lake Geneva itself, the collection soon outgrew the location. Since then, the collection and exhibits have expanded to fill 255 Mill St. Volunteers and city officials worked to create a life-sized Main Street, complete with stores, businesses, homes and a schoolhouse. In July 2004, the Regional News noted that “Most of the individual rooms feature more useable square footage than the entire old museum at 818 Geneva St.”

Two residential wings were added to make the temple/tea house a home, and it remained on the estate in the Chandler family’s hands until the early 1900s. Over the years, it deteriorated. Though efforts were made to put it on the National Register of Historic Places, the contents were auctioned off in 1958, and the structure was ultimately used for a city fire department practice burn. Some of the rescued architectural elements are used for the museum’s Ceylon Court display. Ornately carved columns and some furniture, along with photographs of the building and a detailed history provide background and allow visitors a glimpse of the grandeur of this lost building. The museum recently acquired another piece of Geneva Lake shoreline history, again from one of the lake’s most beautiful estates. R.T. Crane’s Jerseyhurst, built in 1879 and named for his boyhood home, was his beloved summer residence, where he enjoyed recreation on the lake for as long as his age and health would allow Four homes were built on the 23acre estate, including the massive main structure, a wooden Victorian. Crane, founder of the Crane Company that produces bathroom fixtures to this day, loved the lake life so much that he had it immortalized in four commissioned stained glass windows, each depicting a different scene on the lake. After his death, the original Jerseyhurst was torn down, the estate subdivided, and a newer, updated mansion called Windwood was built on the grounds of the original building. The stained glass windows were preserved in a gazebo on the property, according to Crane’s great-great granddaughter, Gloria Garvey. The windows were eventually shipped to her home in Hawaii, where they were stored. Garvey contacted the Geneva Lake museum in 2011 to see if they wanted the windows. The museum staff leapt at the chance to preserve and maintain another piece of Geneva Lake’s history. So many of the lakeshore estates are now gone without a trace. The more fragile elements of the structures are always the first to go, so the restora-

Lake Geneva News correspondent, wrote a piece on Jerseyhurst in 1939. She had this to say about the Crane windows: “Lakeshore residents of 50 and more years ago in describing the original R. T. Crane home particularly mention the beautiful stained glass windows that were set at intervals along the great open stairway. These windows had incorporated in them views of the lake in its various moods and from various points along the shore.” Crane’s 1880s estate stood along about a quarter mile of Geneva Lake shoreline. Plan for fall home improvement projects Home improvement projects can add value to a home and do-it-yourselfers know the sweat-equity that goes into such projects can give homeowners a greater sense of pride in their homes. But no two home improvement projects are the same, and homeowners should know that certain projects are best tackled during certain times of the year. Fall is a great season to work on your house, as the weather is often at its most agreeable once the summer heat has gone and before winter weather arrives. The following are a handful of fall-friendly home improvement projects for homeowners looking to improve their homes. Whether you’re repairing or replacing the roof, fall is a great time of year to dust off the ladder and get some work done on your roof for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, fall is ideal for roof work because you won’t have to be up on the roof with the summer heat bearing down on you. This can make the project move along more quickly, which is especially beneficial if you are paying laborers to work on the roof. The fewer hours workers are fixing your roof, the less you will be paying in labor costs. In addition, fixing up the

roof in the fall ensures those winter storms, be it rain or snow, won’t find their way into your home via leaks. A leaky roof in winter is hard to fix, as the roof surface could be treacherous in the winter and winter winds can make it dangerous to be up on the roof at all. Addressing leaks in the fall can prevent damage to your home’s interior, which can mount up if a leaky roof is not addressed until the following spring. When the weather outside gets frightful, poorly insulated windows can allow cold air into the home. That often has a trickle-down effect on finances, forcing you to turn up the thermostat in an attempt to offset the cold air pouring into the home. Whether you need your windows replaced or simply need to patch up any leaks, a proactive approach to leaky or older windows in the fall can save you from unnecessarily high heating bills come the winter. Addressing leaky windows also makes a home more comfortable for its inhabitants. Fall is the ideal time to address a home’s windows because the temperature outside tends to be pleasant. This means you likely won’t have to make much of an effort to offset the elements, and open windows in the fall won’t make your home’s interior very hot or cold like

they might if you were to tackle the project during the summer or winter. Wood flooring is a hot commodity for many homeowners. But not all flooring can be added to a home at any time of year. That’s because certain types of flooring employ adhesives that need temperatures inside the home to be within a certain range, and that range is often within 70o to 80o F, which makes fall a great time to install such floors. Colder temperatures can make it difficult for the flooring to dry and bond, which will prove problematic down the road. What’s more, many people entertain friends and family come late fall and into the holiday season, and it can be difficult to do so if you are busy installing new flooring. Painting is another home improvement project that seems tailor-made for fall. A fresh coat of paint or a new color scheme around the house can give a home an entirely new look and feel. But paint can be pungent and the aromas may last if it’s applied at a time of year when it can’t dry while the windows are wide open. Paint fumes inside a home can make the home uninhabitable, but painting at a time of year like the fall, when you can keep the windows open during and after the project, can help air the home out. But interior painting isn’t the only painting project homeowners can tackle in the fall. Many exterior paints are temperature-sensitive and need the temperature outside to be above 40o F. Paint that freezes won’t dry properly, and homeowners might be left with a costly and unsightly mistake on their hands. Fall temperatures tend to be amenable to both interior and exterior painting projects, just be sure to check the weather forecast before making your first brush stroke.
