a closer look Corleone’s Sicilian Restaurant Searching for a true Sicilian dining experience? At Corleone’s, N2062 Lake Shore Drive, Lake Geneva, you’ll get that and more. The restaurant recently opened the doors and offers patrons the chance to experience authentic southern Italian cuisine made with fresh ingredients—reason enough to pay them a visit. But you’ll return again and again for the breathtaking lakeside views (sunsets especially) and the reasonable prices, which make Corleone’s the perfect spot to celebrate any occasion—or no occasion at all. The kitchen staff creates specialty dishes, including spiedini-handrolled beef tenderloin stuffed with a signature mixture of raisins, cheeses, garlic and onions, seasoned with bay leaves and grilled. It’s one of the most popular entrees and definitely one that you won’t see on the menu of typical Italian restaurants. Other entrees on the menu include poultry, seafood and veal selections, and the kitchen offers weekly specials as well. Their signature salad is tossed tableside and comes with every entrée. Corleone’s features well-known classic dishes, including lasagna, chicken marsala and fettucini alfredo. The restaurant is gaining a reputation for its pizza as well, so families with picky eaters are sure to find something to please everyone. To that end, Corleone’s offers an unbeatable children’s special—lunch for $5 includes choice of selected entrées, drink and a scoop of gelato. The dinner special for kids is $7. Antipasta and desserts also are temptingly priced. The caponata siciliana is made from freshly diced eggplant, marinated with capers, onions, olives and tomatoes, served with lightly grilled crostini. The calamari is lightly breaded and served with the restaurant’s signature tomato sauce. Ramily recipes such as this appear throughout the menu. Your meal can be finished off with a scoop or two of hazelnut, chocolate or pistachio gelato, or one of Corleone’s authentic Sicilian pastries. Known as “a white tablecloth restaurant with affordability,” Corleone’s is open daily beginning at 11 a.m. The restaurant has a full bar and offers a unique array of cocktails. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, and when weather permits, the spacious deck that overlooks Geneva Lake is a gathering place for both locals and visitors. Plenty of free parking and an upscale, yet comfortable interior allows space for large parties. For more information or to make reservations, call (262) 248-0685. Dam vital to lake, not to historians he dam on Geneva Lake has a long history. It’s not hard to find the dam. Located between the Geneva Lake lagoon and Flat Iron Park, the dam quietly does its job, holding back the lake water while letting the excess escape into the spillway leading to the White River. When the first settlers set their eyes on the lake at the mouth of the White River, their first thoughts turned toward taming those waters and using that energy for grinding grain and powering machinery. It’s the reason Lake Geneva and the surrounding communities exist. After nearly a century of both governing the water levels in Geneva Lake and providing power to downstream businesses, the dam’s sole function now is to keep the Geneva Lake level as constant as possible. During the drought during the summer of 2012, lakeshore residents learned how important that is, as they experienced difficulty mooring their boats to piers that seemed to ride high in the water. But a written history of the dam is pretty hard to find. Noted Geneva Lake historians James Simmons, and, later, Paul Jenkins, seldom mention the

T

dam. In their books’ indexes the word “dam” doesn’t even appear. (To be fair, the Simmons’ book indexes only names.) That seems a bit unusual, considering the vital function performed by the Geneva Lake dam. Jenkins’ mention of the dam is only a few lines, but that passage conveys how important it is to the continued survival of Geneva Lake: “The outlet of Geneva Lake is to the northeast, through the White River, a stream of considerable eroding power. If allowed to work uncurbed, this stream would steadily cut down its channel and lower the level of the lake. Up to the year 1836, the stream had indeed succeeded in cutting down to a point 6 or 7 feet below the present lake level. At that date, the dam was put in, which has ever since kept the water at its present height.” —The Book of Lake Geneva, pgs. 6-7 Simmons writes in the “Annals of Lake Geneva,” that Christopher Payne, the first to build a home here, also built a dam in 1836. It stood until June 1858, when land to the west of the dam was swept away by a flood. The dam was obviously rebuilt, but Simmons doesn’t bother to note that.

Lake Geneva Karl Otzen, president of the Geneva Lake Level Corp., the nonprofit firm that owns the dam, said no comprehensive history of the dam exists. Most of its history is still raw material, contained in the invoices, deeds and land documents that are in the Lake Level Corp.’s archives, Otzen said. Sorting through those papers would be an enormous undertaking, he added. Nonetheless, the lake level corporation does have an eight page outline that gives a general overview of the history of the dam and the corporation that owns it. In 1839, R. Wells Warren, who had built the original grain mill for Payne, joined with six others to buy a section of land from the U.S. Government that included the dam, a swamp area called the

“fore bay” (now Flat Iron Park) and several channels carrying the lake’s outflow which then fed the White River. Included in that 1839 land grant were the water rights now possessed by the lake level corporation. In 1844, Wells became the sole owner of the property, which he sold to Shepard Raymond in 1864. A number of defaults and foreclosures passed possession of the dam and surrounding lands to Alonzo Willard. Willard sold the property to the village of Geneva in 1882, except for the dam, its flumes, mill race and water power rights. The property around the dam was filled in with logs and earth and is now Flat Iron Park.

In the late 1800s, at least three mills were located downstream from the dam. The businesses tended to use all of the water they needed for power with little thought to lake levels. Lake levels could vary by as much as two feet, and when water levels were low, people and businesses that required the lake for transportation were adversely affected. In 1894, H.H. Porter, a Chicago railroad entrepreneur and Geneva Lake summer resident, bought the dam and surrounding property. He and several lakeside land owners then formed the for-profit Lake Geneva Water Power & Lake Level Protection Co. The business purpose of the new corporation was described as: “maintaining and operating a water power mill, improving and leasing lands and regulating the water level of Geneva Lake.” Shares of stock were publicly traded and about 40 individuals invested in the company. In August 1894, the directors of the lake level corporation approved construction of a new dam at its current location at what is now Flat Iron Park between Highway 120 and Center Street.

In 1916, the lake level protection company conveyed a portion of its property north of Main Street to Southern Wisconsin Electric Co., predecessor to the Wisconsin Power & Light Co. The former Wisconsin Power & Light building now houses the Geneva Lake Area Museum. In 1929, Wisconsin Power & Light installed a water wheel generator in its building and produced electricity for local consumption for six years. In 1935, the lease with Wisconsin Power & Light was terminated. In 1959, the directors of the lake

level protection company decided to switch from a for-profit company to a nonprofit. The name of the new nonprofit was the Geneva Lake Level Corp. Modifications were made in the corporation bylaws and the corporation was granted tax-exempt status. However, it took from 1959 until 2002 for the new lake level corporation to lay the old lake protection company to rest, collecting the outstanding stock of the old for-profit company and completing the paperwork necessary to ensure the new corporation owned everything left by the old company. From its reconstruction in 1894 to the present, the dam has undergone a series of repairs. • In July 1909, a new spillway to handle overflow from the dam was built. • In 1953, repairs were made to the floor of the spillway. In 1970, the steel gates adjacent to the spillway were installed. • In 1984, the wooden head gates and tail gates at either end of the mill race were repaired. • During the late 1990s, the state Department of Natural Resources warned that the dam was in danger of failure and required extensive refit and repair. • In fall of 2002, the dam received a major overhaul at a cost of $350,000. The gates were

replaced, the sidewalls were reinforced and the spillway wall was reconstructed. The cost of repairs was paid for by the four municipalities around the lake, Lake Geneva, Fontana, Williams Bay and the town of Linn. Today, the Geneva Lake Level Corp. is caught up in a dispute with the state Department of Natural Resources over control of the lake’s water level. During the height of the 2012 draught, the DNR required the lake level corporation to release 1.9 cubic feet per second of water into the White River, because the DNR was concerned about water levels in the river from the dam

gates to Lake Shore Drive, just east of Donian Park. The lake level corporation, for its part, could see no sense in having water released from the lake when lake water levels were already low.

A recent state Supreme Court decision involving Lake Koshkonong may also strengthen the lake level corporation’s hand. Members of the Geneva Lake Level Corp. are: President Karl Otzen, Vice President Harold Friestad, Treasurer Larry Larkin, Secretary Clara Jacob and board members John Anderson, Bill Gage Jr., Harry Hartshorn, Ken Koranda, Ted Peters and Dan Winkler Peters is also director of the Geneva Lake Environmental Agency and director of the Linn Sanitary District. Winkler is Lake Geneva Director JESSICA FRANZENE/THE RESORTER of Public Works and director of the Lake Geneva Utility CommisAfter a year of negotiations, the sion. state has reduced the amount to be released by the lake to at least Story by Chris Schultz one foot per second. Because rainfall is almost back to normal, water flowing over the dam gates is exceeding that minimum.

Fall home prep includes fireplace safety check People looking to embrace the cold-weather season often find snuggling up in front of a roaring fire is both relaxing and warming. Fireplaces are popular components of homes across the country. Ensuring fireplaces are prepared for a season of use is important from a safety standpoint and for personal comfort as well. The U.S. Fire Administration states that heating fires account for 36 percent of residential home fires in rural areas every year. Often these fires are due to creosote buildup in chimneys and stovepipes. All home heating systems require regular maintenance to function safely and efficiently. One of the most important steps to fireplace maintenance and preparation is having the entire thing cleaned by a professional. A

chimney sweep provides a variety of services. A chimney sweep will clean out the entire chimney. Many use a high-powered vacuum so that there is no soot or dust entering the home. Depending on the range of services, some sweeps also offer a series of inspections of the chimney, interior flue and checks of attic spaces for any damaged areas that will need repair. The next step will be securing your source of fuel. Many homeowners contract with a provider of seasoned firewood. A delivery of one or two cords of wood may take the average fireplace user through the season. Wood can also be purchased at supermarkets or picked up free in different areas. It’s not adviseable to use wood that has just been cut down. It likely contains high levels of moisture that will

result in more smoke than burn power, and could lead to deposits forming on the inside of the chimney. Synthetic logs are also available, but use caution because they may burn unevenly and put out higher levels of carbon monoxide. Follow directions on the packages of these products carefully. It is important to inspect a fireplace screen or guard to ensure it can safely protect against embers escaping the fireplace. In homes where there are young children, an added barrier may be needed in front of the fireplace to prevent little hands from touching the hot screen. I t is vital to open up the chimney flue before starting any fire. This allows fresh air to feed the fire and will enable smoke to exit the home. Failure to open the flue can result in smother-

ing, dirty smoke filling the home quite quickly. The flue should be closed after the fire is completely extinguished so that animals and outside debris don’t enter the home via the opening. Be sure to have a metal

container for removing and storing hot ashes handy. Embers and ashes can stay hot for quite some time, so they should be placed outdoors, ideally far from the home so they don’t set anything ablaze.
