Dear Fellow Members; If you are among the thousands of members who r e g u l a r l y benefit from the cardiostrengthening Precor-885 treadmills available at both buildings, you’ve experienced the stateof-the-art. At a cost of more than $7,000 each, we have invested more than $170,000 into the beginning of a multi-year plan to replace all of the motorized equipment and more at both buildings. In late spring of this year we’ll begin to replace the spinning bikes at the Holland Family Building. More than $600,000 will have been invested in new equipment by the end of 2020, if funding is secured. Part of the money that will fund these investments will need to come from our “Allfor-One” campaign. You should have received a letter requesting your participation in this campaign. On the reverse side of the response card the cost of new equipment
was delineated. The same information is available on-line at www.jccbuffalo.org. Since it takes a whole membership to keep a JCC sustainable, we ask that all of our members consider a commitment either individually or in small groups to help us lessen the burden of borrowing to buy new equipment for the fitness and aquatic centers. As you know, membership revenue provides only one-third of the revenue required to keep a JCC open. Another news-worthy item is that plans for construction of a new indoor playground on the back of the Holland Family Building, along with intensive renovation of the first and lower levels of that building, are progressing. We’re in process with the City of Buffalo departments of Planning and Preservation. When completed, we will have expanded our mission-driven ability to provide the best infant and toddler care, after-school space and programs, and group fitness spaces possible. We are looking to match a $1.5 million matching grant that has been offered towards this $3 million project. Your JCC is committed to the city where we have occupied an important corner since 1948. Please contact me if a superior facility in the city, benefitting
an entire community, is important to you. As you can see elsewhere in this issue of the Center Connection, we’re busy planning camp, presenting live theatre, organizing a film festival and much, much more. Please read carefully and look for the best ways you can benefit from our “center of communities”. We wish you a happy and healthy season of renewal as spring ushers in Purim, Passover and Easter. Thank you for reading and considering participation in our programs and planned revitalization. Sincerely,
Please jonoin Ampe rifl or30. Israel 69 information on More age 23. p

Special Friends© Special Friends© is a NEW Adapted Swim Lesson class, for all children with Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Fragile X Syndrome and Down’s Syndrome. All swim lessons are one on one, with combined group play activity at the beginning and end of the lesson focusing on swimming, safety, and cooperative skills. Maximum of 5 participants per session; these time slots have been selected because they are quieter times at the pool, with the intention of preventing sensory overload and minimizing distractions. However, if your child is unable to attend during the designated time slots, we will offer alternative times if you contact us about it. Water Babies For children 6-36 months and parent(s). Sing songs, learn water safety, develop buoyancy, and explore underwater! Develop front & back glides, strokes and jumping in with parent help. These classes, taught by certified Red Cross Instructors, are full of engaging water games with an emphasis on skills which promote swimming independently before Kindergarten. Drop-off and Pick-up is available right from your child’s JCC Early Childhood classroom!

A Stronger JCC
The JCC educates youth, provides services for seniors, provides a home for growing families and creates an environment that embraces all members of the Buffalo community regardless of background. Surprisingly, membership fees cover only 30 % of the revenue it takes to keep our JCC running. We need your financial support so that we may enrich our community. You can make a donation in honor of, or in memory of someone, or as a get well wish, or to celebrate an anniversary, new baby, or life event in any denomination. A card will be sent to the recipient with your name on it and also acknowledged in a future program guide. To make a donation, come in to either JCC and pick up a donation form. Planned giving opportunities which can provide income during your lifetime can be arranged through the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies. The Jewish Community Center gratefully acknowledges and thanks the following for their contributions of $10 or more. We regret any omissions or errors. SPRING JEWISH HOLIDAYS EXPLAINED
Passover Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. The ritual observance of this holiday centers around a special service conducted at home called the Seder (meaning “order”) which includes a festive meal. At the Seder, a book called the Hagaddah containing the order of prayers, rituals, readings and songs for the Pesach Seder is read. The holiday continues for 8 days when no leavened foods shall be eaten.
Yom HaShoah Yom Yom HaShoah, also known Ha'atzma-ut as Holocaust Remembrance Day. Shoah, which means “catastrophe” or “utter destruction” in Hebrew, refers to the atrocities that were committed against the Jewish people during World War II. This is a memorial day for those who died in the Shoah.
Israeli Independence Day, marks the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948. In Israel it’s a huge celebration, Many cities hold outdoor performances in cities’ squares featuring leading Israeli singers and fireworks displays. Streets around the squares are closed to cars, allowing people to sing and dance in the streets.
Yom HaZikaron Israeli Memorial Day-Yom Hazikaron is the Day of the Memory for the Fallen Soldiers of Israel and Victims of Terrorism and is Israel's official remembrance day, enacted into law in 1963.
Thursday, June 1 Shavuot Fitness/Aquatics/KP/EC Open Business Offices CLOSED
Shavuot The Torah was given by G‑d to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai more than 3300 years ago. On Shavuot, we renew our acceptance of the Torah. The word Shavuot means “weeks.” It marks the completion of the 7 week period between Passover and Shavuot. It is customary to eat dairy foods and stay up all night learning Torah on the first night.
