Dear Fellow Members; This letter is being written at the end of the holiest time of the year for our Jewish members and at a time when we are thinking about ushering in Hanukkah and Christmas. It is a time of introspection and foresight, as we think about our own behavior, the meaning of community and family and about what lies ahead of us in the year to come. For the JCC family, the future year holds promise and excitement as we witness the transition of the Holland Family Building into a 21st Century structure with additional play structures at the Grossman outdoor pool complex, and a growing Camp Centerland. Our vision for the Holland Family Building includes repurposing some existing spaces for use by young teens and families. While we have done a great job creating spaces for fitness members and very young children; our after-school participants and young families have been housed in old space that is now inadequate. New spaces will include a gym that will host modified basketball, fully-accessible and rentable areas for birthday parties, public gatherings, adult classes and more. A JCC is more than a gym. We are a center of communities that is welcoming to all.

These changes, which will come at the expense of a small number of racquetball players, will service more than 300 children daily and families in the evenings and on the weekends. Spaces will have been provided for discussion groups, cultural events and socialization at the same time as new, dramatically improved spaces are created for spinning, Yoga, stretching, massage and group fitness. This entire project, which will cost more than $3 million, will be funded by donors and foundations and not by operating income. If you have constructive ideas for programs at the Holland Family Building we would be happy to hear about them. Please keep in mind that funding for new initiatives would need to be identified. As a center of communities, the JCC depends upon all of our members for funding. Opportunities for endowment of programs, facilities and events are always available. We can arrange for lifetime income and current tax benefits, testamentary gifts and tax-favored giving from retirement funds and appreciated assets through our partnership with the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies and the Community Foundation. Please think of the JCC as a place to make a gift in honor of someone’s birthday, special event or as a designated recipient of gifts in memory of an individual. Additional information and online gifts can be made at www.jccbuffalo.org.

I can be reached for questions or a personal consultation at 204-2071 or by email at rzakalik@jccbuffalo.org. As stated on the cover of this issue of the Center Connection, this will be the last printed issue that will be automatically sent to you. It will be available online and you will be receiving emails that will enable you to click on a link to the Center Connection. In addition to the many trees that will be saved, trash that will be saved from delivery to landfills and polluting ink that will be avoided, the JCC will be able to devote tens of thousands of dollars to programs and employee compensation. We hope you will understand our rationale for joining the many publications that have gone to an online format. Should you wish to continue to receive hard copies of the Center Connection please let us know by telling our Member Services desk staff who will advise our marketing department. Wishing each and every one of our members a happy holiday season and a healthy new year.

Sincerely,

Richard Zakalik

HOORAY!

Our new Winter Program Guide is HERE! Do you know about all the amazing programs, events, family fun days, classes, concerts and more going on at the JCC? Here's everything you need to know! This is the last issue that we will be mailing to our members unless you let us know that you still want one delivered. Please email us at lgreenspan@jccbuffalo.org or come in and let a Member Services Representative know that you still want one. If not, they will be available for download from our website at jccbuffalo.org or copies will be in both location lobbies.

RENOVATI

Construction is progressing Plans have been altered slightly to include a larger space for basketball and other activities, replacing both squash courts. The massage room will be enhanced with a more spa-like ambience and two additional family change rooms will be added on the lower level. Plans for a second elevator, which will enhance security by separating our fitness members from early childhood and after-school participants have been altered. The second elevator will be added to the interior of the building, rather than on the front adjacent to the entrance. This change will be less disruptive to the outdoor playground, will eliminate the need for a wheelchair lift to the new sport court and will result in substantial savings of more than $100,000. We should see the new indoor playground enclosed within the next three or four weeks.

ION UPDATES Recently posted review

"The JCC has beautiful gym facilities, great classes that are free with membership, good locker room and shower facilities, lots of trainers, and a parking lot. The gym equipment is well maintained. You get 3 free trainer sessions with membership which shows you all the equipment and a program to get started with. I also understand that their child care is excellent. I've been a member for about 10 years." -Laura C.

Indoor playground An opportunity for the membership and general community to enjoy a sunny, funfilled place during winter.

We are looking forward to the NEW Entrance Sculpture! The new location of the second elevator, which is designated for fitness members, has provided us with a large space in which to create a meaningful sculpture. Visible from the rear entrance portico, it will be a welcoming exterior wall sculpture that will reflect the values of inclusion and diversity with a Jewish lens. Noted local artist Ellen Steinfeld has been asked to submit a proposal for an 8’ x 8’ steel sculpture which will fill the former doorway space at the parking lot side of the entrance. As a prominent element of the most frequently used entrance to the building, the eagerly awaited sculpture will add to the inventory of significant artwork in the City of Buffalo. Other public works by Ellen Steinfeld can be seen at Buffalo General Hospital, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Upstate Cancer Center, the Burchfield Penney Gallery, Artpark and Daemen College. This installation is among the available dedication opportunities that our project will create.

Love

When children walk through our doors, they are greeted with smiles from teachers and friends. Our loving teachers are educated, patient and eager to help each child feel at home. Children receive extra special attention because of our low student to faculty ratio. Most faculty have been working with children at the JCC for many years. This stability gives parents extra confidence that their children will be more than ready to enter Kindergarten.

STORM SWIM CLUB

If you are new to our program, we ask that you bring your athlete to get evaluated by one of our USA Swimming coaches during an open evaluation time and we will determine the best swim group that properly matches your child’s strengths. Introducing a whole new way to focus on matching the individual swimmer abilities with the proper group! Our new practice groups, Shock, Thunder and Lightning, are organized to best match kids with similar ability, age, physical and emotional maturity, level of commitment, practice habits, and experience. These 3 distinct levels will help your child get the best experience possible! We strive to make the club a fun place to be where they will meet new friends while learning all aspects of stroke skills and USA Swimming rules.

AGES 5-8

Asaf Elkalai April 14 – May 5

Asaf Elkalai, a recent graduate of the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem, is becoming increasingly important in the Israeli art scene and will be exhibiting in Poland just prior to his visit to Buffalo. We anticipate that not only the art, but the experience of working with him will be incredibly memorable for everyone! Among the projects planned is a video for the newly renovated Holland Family Building lobby representing our diversity and inclusiveness. Cathy Shuman Miller will be leading a task force that will be responsible for the coordinating of agencies and projects during Asaf’s visit. This is a joint project of the JCC, the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies and the Buffalo Jewish Federation. Additional details will be shared as we get closer.

Building

A Stronger JCC

The JCC educates youth, provides services for seniors, provides a home for growing families and creates an environment that embraces all members of the Buffalo community regardless of background. Surprisingly, membership fees cover only 30% of the revenue it takes to keep our JCC running. We need your financial support so that we may enrich our community. You can make a donation in honor of, or in memory of someone, or as a get well wish, or to celebrate an anniversary, new baby, or life event in any denomination. A card will be sent to the recipient with your name on it and also acknowledged in a future program guide. To make a donation, come in to either JCC and pick up a donation form. Planned giving opportunities which can provide income during your lifetime can be arranged through the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies. The Jewish Community Center gratefully acknowledges and thanks the following for their contributions of $10 or more. We regret any omissions or errors.
