Your support helps the JCC provide programs that help community members of all ages live longer, healthier, happier lives. Funds raised will help support community programs including Early Childhood, Health and Wellness, Fitness for Children and Adults, Scholarship for Afterschool and Summer Camp, Adult Education, Cultural Arts, the Jewish Repertory Theatre and more. Donation forms may be found at the Member Services Desk at both JCC locations.

My childhood friend suggested the JCC’s early childhood program for our daughter. From sitting at the dining table to eat, to sitting in my lap to read a book, to playing with her toys joyfully by herself, to facial expressions of happiness and even learning to clap, she has learned so much here! -Early Childhood Parent

Since joining 4 months ago I’ve lost more than 40 lbs! I’m loving the CXWorx and BodyPump classes which are helping me achieve my goals and I really appreciate the support of the staff and members. My husband Mike enjoys strength training and our boys love hanging out in babysitting, and ask to come to the gym, so they’re building healthy habits at a young, impressionable age. - Vanessa, JCC Member

I didn’t expect the profound changes that would improve my health, career and personal life. I’ve lost 30 pounds, halted the progress of arthritis, toned my body and dramatically increased my endurance, flexibility and strength. Inspired, I became a JCC certified water aerobics teacher, and I just celebrated my five year anniversary teaching! Joining the JCC improved my health, gave me a new career and expanded my circle of friends. The JCC is a special place that changes lives...it certainly enriched mine! -Gail Wells, JCC instructor and member

Children learn, play, grow, explore and discover new talents and skills, interests and values and all summer long at Camp Centerland on the Irving M. Shuman Campgrounds featuring 19 acres of athletic fields, wooded nature trails, adventure challenge courses, activity shelters, and much more! -Michael Garcia, Director, Camp Centerland

Kids Place After School program creates safe space for children to explore and interact. We’ve been inspired lately by a young girl who struggles with a genetic disorder. Working with her family, we adapted our program and have watched her make wonderful friends, and participate in recreational games. She is learning that even with her challenges, she can join many activities, and it’s been life changing for her. -Shea Akers, Director, Kids Place Program

Adventure Camp, a ropes course and wilderness program, teaches campers how to safely belay their friends while climbing the rock wall. Emie took to learning the new skill like a fish to water. Watching Emie as she stepped into her own self-confidence was powerful. JCC programs promote selfesteem, leadership and empowerment in young people. We can’t wait until Emie is a little older and can become a challenge course staff member herself. -Jason Palevsky, Outdoor Center Coordinator

Renovations are

Dear Fellow Members;

You may have heard bits and pieces of the news I’m about to share, but we are very excited to share additional news concerning the Holland Family Building renovation project. This comprehensive reconstruction of most of the spaces, which Zakalik_015 5 weren’t renovated during the last nine years, has created a state-of-the-art facility for our City of Buffalo members. Totaling roughly more than $3 million, it is being financed by a dollar-for-dollar matching gift from the Benderson family. Initially intended to renovate a much smaller number of rooms, the project was expanded three-fold by Randy and Ron Benderson who very much wanted to see us at our best. While a small part of the matching funds have been secured, we are seeking gifts, which can be paid in as many as five years, to match this incredible challenge gift. Please contact me at 204-2071 or rzakalik@jccbuffalo.org for information regarding naming opportunities or gift options. In addition, we will be seeking endowment pledges to further secure our financial future and ability to keep our buildings and the Irving M. Shuman Campgrounds (home of Camp Centerland) in top condition.

In early May, more than 85 Kids Place AfterSchool children entered new, bright and beautiful rooms in what was formerly Group Fitness space on the first floor of the building. They were joined by two rooms full of infants and will be followed by toddlers and “waddlers” later this summer. The lobby area on the lower level of the building will open in a few weeks and will provide access to the already-in-use Group Fitness Studio, Yoga Studio and high-tech Cycling Studio. State-ofthe-Art amenities include a heated Yoga floor, LED lighting in all spaces, energy-efficient HVAC systems and high-end aesthetic touches.

Members who improve their lives through fitness routines will revel in aesthetically pleasing space in the fitness center. Members and guests who wish to enjoy some community space can do so in the new lobby, which has been expanded and improved dramatically, or on the lower level which will include an art gallery, stretching area, family change rooms and massage room. There is much, much more to see and experience at the Holland Family Building, a 21st century commitment to the City of Buffalo, our valued members and staff and a place that is a center of communities.

Our Linwood-side entrance will be adjacent to a magnificent stainless steel wall relief sculpture by noted Buffalo artist Ellen Steinfeld. Inclement weather won’t stop our pre-school children from playing on wonderful structures in our new, indoor playground. Older kids will enjoy basketball and other sports in the new multi-purpose court located on the lowerlower level (formerly the sub-basement).

Love

When children walk through our doors, they are greeted with smiles from teachers and friends. Our loving teachers are educated, patient and eager to help each child feel at home. Children receive extra special attention because of our low student to faculty ratio. Most faculty members have been working at the JCC for years. This stability gives parents extra confidence that their children will be more than ready to enter Kindergarten.

Season

Audiences will be treated to JRT’s first musical – THE STRUDEL LADY, followed by Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award winner - TALLEY’S FOLLY – and concluding with - LOOKING THROUGH GLASS - a new adaptation of one of the most classical Jewish dramas, S. Ansky's, “The Dybbuk,”. “We are pleased to offer our audiences an exciting and entertaining season that includes two World Premieres, as well as music, thought provoking stories and dramatic historical significance,” says Saul Elkin, JRT Founding Artistic Director.

The Strudel Lady by Shirl Solomon October 4 – 28, 2018

Chava, an American born, Orthodox wife and mother, is deserted by her husband and children. Embarrassed and confused about her identity and how to support herself financially, she seeks advice from a trusted older couple, who help her find independence, self-esteem and eventually love through her skill as a baker. The Strudel Lady is an entertaining and thought provoking musical story about marriage, Jewish traditions and as the title suggests, the power of a well-made strudel.

Talley's Folly by Lanford Wilson February 7 – March 3, 2019

At the end of World War II, Matt Friedman, a Jewish immigrant who has spent his life keeping others at a distance, returns to the small town where he first met Sally Talley. Nothing like her conservative Protestant family and neighbors, Sally is a nurse’s aide with deep misgivings about the country’s future. After a lifetime of believing they’ll never truly belong in the world around them, Matt has worked up the courage to ask Sally for her hand and convince her that they do belong—together. Winner of both the 1980 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award as best play of the season.

Looking Through Glass by Ken Kaisser May 9 – June 2, 2018

After going against the wishes of her heart and marrying a man just to please her parents, Leah is possessed by the soul of her true love who she has met shortly before her planned wedding. Can an exorcism untangle their souls, or will they be forever entwined for the rest of eternity? Set in our turbulent times, this haunting and romantic modern-day rendition of the Jewish classic: The Dybbuk by S. Ansky, reminds us that love is a destiny which can't always be escaped.

Tickets available at: Box office: 716-650-7626 Showclix: 1-888-718-4253 (Monday-Friday, 9:00am-9:00pm EST) or at either JCC Member Services desk. For more information on JRT, productions, dates and tickets, visit our website at www.jewishrepertorytheatre.com.

Building

A Stronger JCC

The JCC educates youth, provides services for seniors, provides a home for growing families and creates an environment that embraces all members of the Buffalo community regardless of background. Surprisingly, membership fees cover only 30% of the revenue it takes to keep our JCC running. We need your financial support so that we may enrich our community. You can make a donation in honor of, or in memory of someone, or as a get well wish, or to celebrate an anniversary, new baby, or life event in any denomination. A card will be sent to the recipient with your name on it and also acknowledged in a future program guide. To make a donation, come in to either JCC and pick up a donation form. Planned giving opportunities which can provide income during your lifetime can be arranged through the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies. The Jewish Community Center gratefully acknowledges and thanks the following for their contributions of $10 or more. We regret any omissions or errors.
